When No Man's Sky came out in 2016 it was, simply put, not good. I don't usually buy games immediately at release or pre order just for these reasons. a game can be good or bad, a game can have bugs, a game can be whatever it wants to be and i can live with that, its all relative depending on the likings of each gamer, and thats what a review should be about, but when they mislead you to buy something by promising a product that ends up not being what promised, when they totally and shamelessly lie in your face doing so, and when u see aa game can be good or bad, a game can have bugs, a game can be whatever it wants to be and i can live with that, its all relative depending on the likings of each gamer, and thats what a review should be about, but when they mislead you to buy something by promising a product that ends up not being what promised, when they totally and shamelessly lie in your face doing so, and when u see a sticker hiding what was really promised, hiding the lies... and all this after paying 60 bucks? then theres no review possible for me when first of all its about a SCAM not a game, just despicable, it's a real shame to see this happening at this particular level after 25 years of gaming, my real thanks and 10/10 score goes to the reviewers and press that cared for us the clients to show us the real product, they just saved me all that money and troubles, as for the game, my score is really obvious. I didn't buy this game on release, but I did it 5 years later. I can say that the game is really interesting. Large open world (2^64 planets), craft, base building, battles, both on planets and in space, and the ability to play both offline and online. But not without bugs

From it's shaky beginnings to it's current state, No Man's Sky has come a long way! I came on board shortly after the Atlas Rises expansion so missed most of the furore with it's initial release. I came on board shortly after the Atlas Rises expansion so missed most of the furore with it's initial release. By that stage, bases and vehicles had been introduced and, although the game was not bad, it still felt pretty empty. However, Hello Games have been pouring their heart and soul in to their creation and the game has benefitted greatly, along with it's player base. The game of then is a shadow of the game it is now.

With the release of their content update 'Expeditions' there is a reminder of just how far the game has come. Starting a new expedition, with basically nothing, you play back through all of the content again, fulfilling missions and reaching checkpoints. Even then, not everything that has been added to the game is included in the 'Expedition'.

Their latest update, as of writing this, is Prisms. It has added a graphical upgrade to the game to make better use of ray-tracing technology and the game just 'pops' now. I just wish I had a better rig to make full use of it all, but even with my old GTX it still looks very nice.

Hello Games has promised there is still much more to come this year. We've had three 'DLC' updates already and we're only 6 months in! So I can't wait to see what they have in store for us.

ALL of this content, all 17 DLCs, have been added for free. There is no paid DLC model, as there is with most other games these days, everything they have added has been gratis. And these updates are not simply adding a couple of things here and there, these are updates that most other publishers would proudly package as a separate DLC and make you pay for!

The upshot is that I am so glad that I decided not to listen to the negative reviews and made the purchase when I did. I have had a front-row seat to the evolvement of a game that has come a long way and is destined to be so much more.

Hats off to you Hello Games, you have a fan for life here!

It's improved a lot from what I was told were the early days of the game. The devs initially were overly ambitious, but they showed they did care, and that really says something for the integrity of the devs that they continue to add new content despite its initial crash and burn. Nowadays, it's a hella fun and interesting romp through space, exploring different planets, collecting resources, chilling out. It's like a 3D Starbound, really. Plenty of different ways to play the game, whether it's trade running, farming, hunting, questing, exploring, whatever really.

If I had to suggest features for a potential sequel: take some pages from Spore. Add the ability for players to make custom plants and animals and minerals and share them online for other people to discover. That would prevent biome-specific plants from starting to look repetitive, and further encourage exploring to see new, weird sights. Extra customization options for players along the lines of Skyrim would also let players really feel like their character is THEIR character. Adjustable proportion sliders and what-not would be very nice. No Man's Sky is a game that begs for a lot of assets, I think, even more than are already in the game, and I feel like having player-designed props would take the game that one step further.

    Also let people scrap multi-tools.

9/10, I'd probably normally only give 8 or so, but I have so much respect for the devs working so hard to correct their mistakes in an industry that would normally just push the game to the side and pretend it never existed.

I think it would have actually been good for the pc gaming industry as a whole if Hello Games had went bankrupt because of this. They deserved it.

    Pros:
-runs smoothly on an older system gtx 860mobile at medium graphics settings 1080p. (update: Oct. 2020... NMS is no longer friendly to my gtx 860, i'd recommend a minimum of a gtx 960 or better now)
-The ships and are beautifully designed. Update: even greater diversity of ships now. Oct 2020
-I really enjoy how the multitools work as weapons / tools and how they are replaced and upgraded.
-the game provides some challenge in terms of environment.
-The planets and creatures are awesome and diverse (enough).
-exploration via ship or on foot is wonderful.
-leaving a planet and landing on one is thrilling.
-crafting bases is fun and easy to understand.
-Grinding for resources is not necessary, IF!, one learns the shortcuts.

    Cons:
-Few intelligent alien life forms to fight against on foot (only the sentinals are available to fight)
-Little diversity in spaceship vs spaceship dog fighting.
-Void of other players to interact with.. Update: Oct. 2020, limited interaction with other players.
-The game could be more accurate in terms of elements e.g. di-hydrogen, deuterium, tritium and what could be used with such elements on the periodic table if not only to be educational.
-NO gas planets / giants? There should at least be planets that one should avoid at all costs or risk instant death and alternatively the player can send a probe into such planets.
-No interaction with Stars, no change in gravity experienced on different planet / massive bodies (Update: there is now different experiences in gravity... BRAVO!!).

It plays well and is fun, quickly becoming addictive. the environment can be bland at times, but the creatures and plants are very original. Some attack you and they all do seem to pose as a resource. The crafting system is quite generic , where you select from a menu - minecraft had the most intuitive and interesting crafting system.

The style of the game, from space to the plants are interesting - the music and sound also fits it , given it is chilled and you can expect to pump hours into the game, just like minecraft.

After playing, as I enjoyed Minecraft, I have decided I will buy it when I can – which I did not expect to do previously.

I have also been experiencing a lot more bugs like the discovery system not working, other players being invisible, bases dissapearing. All of these things were pretty much non-existant in the past.

I held back on getting the game when it first dropped, although I was most certainly interested. I also did not see/read all of the initial negative reviews. I held off because I was instead putting my attention on Star Citizen at the time (still am keeping tabs on it). But seeing as how we all have to wait a year or more for SC campaign/PU, I thought I would bite the bullet and finally check out NMS after all these years.

I understand it was released to nearly universal letdown -- not delivering on hardly anything it was advertised to be, however, in it's current state as of writing this, the game is not half as bad as initial/outdated reviews would lead you to believe. It's a very decent game, and the only reason I can't give it a higher score is because I'm not a hardcore exploration fan. What the game currently does have to offer is pretty nice though. It's not perfect, but given from where it started, you can tell the developers care about making it better.

I wish it had more ship diversity, both in terms of exterior design and interior layout (especially space station interiors -- they're all identical), and I understand this game is built around procedural generation, but if they added in more hand-crafted buildings/structures and populated those with interesting/unique characters with motivation/purpose, then this game would really shine imo. For all I know, Hello Games might be planning or have stuff in the works to address all this. Even if they don't the game is currently really decent.

The game fills a niche in VR that's largely missing. Most VR games are short or gimmicky. As a result of being a deep, immersive game first and having VR added later, No Man's Sky is the kind of VR game you can play until the weight of your headset gives you a headache. This game gives me a sense of wonder I haven't felt from a video game in years. Landing on a planet and discovering it has an environment unlike any you've landed on thus far is always a thrilling discovery. The VR controls are also really great. Rather than taking the Bethesda strategy of mapping buttons to the VR controller, No Man's Sky opts for Star Trek style gesture controls. You access your tools and inventory with contextual holograms on your exosuit's wrists. You fly your ship by grabbing its throttle with one hand and flight stick with the other. It all feels organic and *real* in a way that Skyrim and Fallout VR don't. The only reason I don't give this game a 10 is that the story is very utilitarian in nature. It's primary purpose is to walk you through the staggering number of game mechanics in a pace that isn't overwhelming. And it's enough. You won't be riding an emotional rollercoaster, but that okay because the game is focusing on what it does best. For my money, this is the best exploration game on the market, period, and far and away the best VR game. Expand

Unfortunately, the whole experience is shredded to pieces by bugs. So many, you can't play the game for tripping over them. Aspects of the game that lack polish or are downright clunky like parts of the UI (galaxy map probably the worse offender) can easily be forgiven. The sheer weight of bugs that actually hinder gameplay can't. Hello Games needs to really focus on these, as they more than negate the content and features updates they keep bringing out.

TL;DR - Worth a look. The developer is working overtime releasing good content for the game, and for a survival-lite Minecraft spin-off it's fun, engaging, and has a pretty good amount of non-linear content.

    +PROS+

    · Mechanically, the game is pretty good. Controls are solid and everything feels 'right'. Swapping between tools, and the adjacency system (though the latter is hardly explained) are pretty intuitive once you get the hang of it. Vehicles are fun to use and work very well in the game. Some people complain about the in-space combat but frankly I haven't had that many problems with it and it seems more like a personal problem.

    · It's really cool to look at. The visuals are just out of control.

    · The developer is actively releasing high quality content for the game, and seems to actually care about the sustainability of the title.

    -CONS-

    · The game struggles with its story - it's pretty cool but it drags on for an eternity and the rewards are pretty garbage.

    · Both PvE and PvP in this title are for the most part non-existent and otherwise complete and utter garbage. While the title seems to be purposefully centered around exploration, the lack of content encouraging players to interact with one another results in a game that's pretty boring to play with a group.

    · While new stuff is coming out, it still does suffer some of the same repetitive complaints that have plagued it in the past about lack of meaningful content, though it's getting much, much better.

This game is a story in its development. A failure at launch, but now meeting critics expectations, and adding in new features like VR support! I'd happily play this game for hours on end.

The game is great at the wow factor, when comes to exploring worlds. The first time you fly to space is amazing, doubly-so in VR. The game still has issues, but you can't knock Hello Games for their years of support for this game. The game is based around grinding for materials. The good thing is that you do get relief as you unlock more automated ways to get some of them. And in time it is easier to collect them generally - usually buying them. So if grinding concerns you, no worries - it concerned me too but I'm ok with the amount I'm doing.

You can't expect any game to be all things to all people. If you are actually interested in an exploration game, come play. If you need a leaderboard in your game, go play elsewhere.

No Man's Sky breaks the record in falling short of the hype – which is an incredible achievement in the category of super ambitious space games. The huge universe is a repetitive, lifeless and meaningless place, no amount of random generated creatures can change that. The most unforgivable fail is making the spaceship such a pain to fly, which makes exploring the vast universe simply a chore. However, at its best the game is epic and many of the issues should be easy to fix, so this might not be the end of the journey after all. [Sept 2016]

It's partially broken, shallow, repetitive and aimless, but hang me, I still kind of love it. [Issue#255, p.56]

While some poorly designed systems and mechanics chip away at your patience, the feeling of flying seamlessly from space down to a peninsula you spotted from orbit never fails to enthrall. [Nov 2016, p.106]
