Moonbreaker is an utterly unique game, unlike anything else on the market right now. Though I didn’t find a personal connection to the game’s cast of characters, it’s impossible not to recognize the game’s fantastic conversion of tabletop wargaming to the virtual space, creating a game with tons of customization and fun, forever replayable mechanics.

Moonbreaker is a fun and approachable digital miniatures game with an emphasis on smart turn-by-turn tactics, but it’s tarnished by microtransactions that threaten its future. [Early Access Score = 70]
  2. Moonbreaker really does seem to capture the tabletop experience in digital form, making for bite-sized turn-based battles that are a lot of fun. It's just hard to recommend in its early access state, not because it's a buggy mess (far from it), but more in the sense of units and leaders and maps; it needs some booster packs of its own, I reckon. But once – and if – it gets a steady stream of stuff, I don't see why it can't evolve into a simple, yet surprisingly complex strategy battler. Fingers crossed eh. [Early Access Review]

Fantastic game, I played 50 hours over six days during the playtests -- about 25 playing multiplayer and 25 painting. The microtransactionsFantastic game, I played 50 hours over six days during the playtests -- about 25 playing multiplayer and 25 painting. The microtransactions are a non-issue in my opinion, since you can unlock everything in the game within a few hours of playing. I honestly don't even know why they're in the game to begin with, I can't imagine anyone is going to feel the need to buy anything.

There are some minor issues that need to be polished, particularly some minor UI annoyances, but I'm rating the game 10 anyway because A) it's early access and B) the devs are incredibly responsive to player feedback, so I can only see things getting better from here.

The gameplay is tight and tactical, and while there are a few balance issues the community managers are very responsive. There's been a big todo about the monetization, but $30 gets you every unit in the game, so there's no need to spend more unless you want "legendary" units, which don't do anything yet. I highly suspect that this game will be FTP upon launch, but I'm glad to support this type of game. Expand

Runs on integrated graphics pretty well, using medium graphics. Expand

Devs are very responsive, which is just a breath of fresh air.

However, the strategic elements are learning from digital TCGs where they should be adapting staples from table top minis games. A little more agency in the pre-game, dynamic objectives, and more interesting roster building are needed to "get there" as a miniatures game.

I don't think it's horrible by any means, but there's a lot left to random chance in combat. It's still early, but the game is super unbalanced in its current state. The XP gain was already nightmarishly slow before the most recent game patch. Then they nerfed it by 90%. It's unplayable now. They removed all the ship skills, which were a really fun part of the game. The changes just feel like they are running around blind behind the scenes and have no clue what this game is supposed to be. I wanted to love this, but the game is a sinking ship. Expand

There's no strategy to it whatsoever, just luck. Whoever crits most, wins. Whoever misses most with their 90%+ accuracy ranged attacks, loses. Everything about this game is at the mercy of RNG. God forbid they ever introduce a competitive mode in this game. There's an entire game mode walled behind paid currency. You pay for the game AND have to fork out a ton in microtransactions to unlock content. There's no game balance and one Captain is beyond broken. And, oh yeah, the season track is agonizingly long. All in all, this is a terrible game unless you love RNG, loot boxes, and shallow gameplay. Expand
