Simple, addicting and fun, this game is one of the best games that I currently have. The possibilities for creation are endless. The only things I hate about this game are endermen and hunger in survival mode. This is a great game!

Fast fact: if you rate a game solely on its graphics, you're an idiot. I'm giving it an 8 because while I don't care about graphics in games, the gameplay is solid, sure, but it does get repetitive and boring at times. I played this game non-stop when it was in alpha 1.2.2, and it sure was a lot of fun back then, but when I play it now I just feel boredom. Minecraft is one of those games I've spent countless hours playing. I love to pieces, but it's still missing things. There's no tutorial or instructions in the actual game, you have to go to forums or wikis that weren't even made by Mojang to get the recipes for items. Multiplayer is certainly a high point, but disconnects and the process for setting a server can ruin it. That being said,Minecraft is one of those games I've spent countless hours playing. Multiplayer is certainly a high point, but disconnects and the process for setting a server can ruin it. That being said, I loove survival and creative. Survival feels like my own personal little world, while creative is letting my imagination loose. The graphics are cute and suitable for this game, it really sets the mood. But I can understand some people's dislike for the graphics. There are a few bugs here and there but it doesn't really affect the overall experience. If you play this as a linear game, you won't like it. You have to make it your own to enjoy it, and that's the basics of Minecraft - building whatever you want. Expand

Minecraft is one of the most addicting games I have ever played. It is the undisputed least linear game on the market. There is no questlines, story, or anything - you do whatever you want. At first it is a bad thing, you'll probably have no idea what you're supposed to do unless someone told you or you watched some LP's on Youtube. But after you get into the swing of things, the game's presentation woes gets entirely forgotten. It then becomes a good thing. I was absolutely obsessed with this game for a couple months. The graphics are outdated, but really memorable like that. After you achieve tons in the game like I did, the non-linearity starts to become a bad thing again. While the game is infinite, there is a point where you feel like "What do I do now?" While you could just build, unless your some type of artist who loves to create things, you won't really feel like you are moving forward in the game. After that, I turned to the multiplayer portion of the game. Setting up servers is really annoying, and you'll likely take a few tries (unless your a computer whiz) to really understand what you're doing. The game is twice as fun playing with friends however - it adds interaction to a once solo and barren experience and it made it feel.. more worthwhile. Eventually that will get old to, though. Summary: Overall this game has creative, super non-linear gameplay, iconic outdated graphics, tons and tons and tons of lasting appeal. Expand

Minecraft is not a game. Minecraft is more of a creativity toy. Of course, with the recent addition of experience points and the hunger meter it's now steering towards the game portion. But still, Minecraft is and (hopefully) will always be about creating rather than surviving. Without a real in-game goal, the player is given free reign to whatever they want to do. They can sculpt a giant hand flipping the bird if they really want to, or create a scale model of the Enterprise. Or they can build a castle, a dungeon, a maze... Minecraft lets the player build almost anything they want.

Of course, a game without clear goals will bore some people and turn them off this game. The blocky graphics as well, while ideal (more or less) for a game of this kind, would probably turn some people away, especially with the ongoing "prettier is better" thought process that seems to be spreading in the industry. Minecraft is still fun though, and with some creativity can last you a very long time.

I stuck with the game a while as these elements were said to be improving as the game neared release. Roll on to a few versions near before release and still the gameplay was primitive but some new features had crept in and the final version started to sound like it had promise from what was being told, I started to gain more interest in the game again which I had left alone for months. A few weeks back and the final 1.0 is announced so I try to log into minecraft (bear in mind the login name still persists in its entry box of both my windows PC and linux notebook so I know they are correct and I have the details written down and kept somewhere safe) and I get an error message - login failed. I have since tried to get the game to work again - lost password, lost account, hack request, etc have no effect on the main site and it looks like my account has vanished, my emails to mojang go unanswered for weeks, I even tried an attempt to tweet the developer but no answer. Sorry but I cannot rate a game higher than 0 that is not playable in any shape or form, and for them to lose/wipe my account details after having paid is shocking and it looks like it will go unresolved. If you pay for the game I hope you dont have this happen to you, but I know for one I wont being giving mojang any more of my cash. Expand

So yeah for now the game is a 5/10..What can save or kill this game for me?
the game play saves it...Like I said earlier in the review the game is not boring because of its gameplay, but remember i don't like building many things, just destroying and going to dungeon server looking for this.

It's a game that, even with bad graphics, people whom complain about graphics shrug such a criticism aside for what the game is. It seems the only way for this game to exist is to have bad graphics, so in all retrospect it's not much of a criticism because if you complain about the graphics, you're complaining about the game. There's nothing much this game comes to. You either like to explore and find materials to survive and create a "scratch" life for yourself, or you do not. There's nothing much like minecraft. It's a game that never ends. There's only black and white, no gray. Personally I love the game. If you can call it a game. There are no real rules or boundaries that make it a game, and that's why it's so great. If you like to play something in which you can build whatever you want with virtual lego blocks, then you'll have a blast, because that's all you really do here. I mean you eat and survive and mine the materials in which you build. Though it comes down to you and you're creations, as well as playing online with others to build with and explore new areas with to get resources. Personally I like playing with a friend or community, otherwise it becomes quite boring playing on your own single player game. I would recommend this game to anyone that is into building virtual structures, and to nobody that isn't. Minecraft is for a very select. Playing such a game it's quite astonishing to find that select is so large. Expand

Minecraft is certainly a special game but leaves a lot to be desired with all of the false blogs about upcoming features. While it is still lacking, however, the constant updates are nice and I do believe that there is a LOT more to come. *Note that this is my first review so pardon if I'm doing something wrong*

    The bad:
With a lack of a tutorial or even an in-game book that records what you have crafted for later use, the game drops the player flat on his face and then forces you to learn how to actually use the game using online wikis and things of the sort. I've been hiding behind the fact that Minecraft was in beta and that everything will be polished out in the full release... WRONG. The game has a lot of nice aspects but fails to deliver things that would incorporate casual players into the mix. The game is severly lacking in the multiplayer section and uses a clunky server-ip system that I would have thought would be nicely fleshed out. Setting up a server for you and your friends is all-too much of a hassle to be considered a "good" experience. The only boss in the game is an "ender-dragon" which features more or less redundant A.I. The only thing that really tells you that it's a boss is it's absurdly high amount of health that's constantly regenerating due to these "towers." The boss isn't so much fun as it is just plain annoying. After I wasted that 15 minutes of my life, all I had to show for it was a boring screen of just text. I DID get a ****-load of experience, but what does that do IF THE BOSS IS ALREADY DEAD?

    The good:
The game aims to be an interactive sandbox and does a very good job of doing so. Players are put into an infinite, randomly-generated/ing world in survival mode and are forced to gather materials in order to survive. At night, or in any dark area, monsters appear. The player must build up defenses as he mines materials. These materials can be put together to create more elaborate items, or "crafted" items: hence the name "Mine"-"Craft". The game even features a basic form of circuitry called redstone that the player can manipulate with pistons and buttons to create the grandest of button-operated doors, monster traps, or whatever your heart desires. The idea of a monster being able to creep up on you at any given moment and scare you ****-less just adds to the suspense. The best thing about Minecraft, however, is that the experience is yours; you build what YOU want to build. The idea of spending time doing something that has an awesome outcome just invokes this sense of accomplishment in the player. The things that you build are constantly evolving in trivial little bursts at a time into something amazing that YOU built. Bottom line:
While the game DOES have a lot of gameplay, the Mojang team is spending too much time expanding on content when the game SHOULD be working on the features it promised so long ago. The game still doesn't feel finished, but that's not to draw away from what is, in the end, an amazing experience.

The 1.0 version of the indie phenomena is still obviously unfinished and flawed in many ways, but it's so easy to forget that when you're building your dream castle, exploring scary caves and vast mountain ranges and having a great time in its blocky world.

While Minecraft may not be everybody's cup of tea, I doubt anyone can deny that it's an important step into new territory.

A must-play title - as much a part of videogaming as it is anything else. [Issue#118, p.102]
