Kiln is the latest example of one of gaming’s most creative studios executing well on a fresh idea. There may be a couple of aspects that could’ve used more time in the oven, but Double Fine’s Kiln is a cool and quirky addition to Xbox’s 2026 lineup.

Kiln delivers a refreshingly original multiplayer experience where pottery design directly impacts combat strategy and character stats. This creative depth feels rewarding, yet the title suffers from a severe lack of content at launch. Although its core loop is accessible and fun, the limited modes and maps cause the experience to feel repetitive far too quickly.

Kiln is the successful realization of a highly original concept, executed brilliantly in terms of visuals, sound, and design. It’s a lot of fun, offers plenty of customization options, and features a colorful and engaging world. However, in its current state—particularly when it comes to the maps—it hasn’t quite reached its full potential yet, but I have no doubt it will improve as new content is added.

Kiln is built on a really fun idea, and for a good while, it’s a blast. Sculpting wearable pots and crashing into other players carries an infectious energy that’s hard not to enjoy with friends. Unfortunately, beneath all that molded clay is a multiplayer experience that still feels too thin, too repetitive, and too unfinished to hold attention for much longer than a few good nights of goofing around.

Kiln is an original concept, simple and effective, that hits the target, though its few weaknesses add some shadows when it comes to the final conclusion. It feels fresh and fun, but lacks the depth needed to sustain interest over time.

Double Fine's latest sees creativity and destruction collide in an awkward, barebones competitive multiplayer experience.
