Heroes Of The Storm is quite fun, and its got a fair bit of familiar characters, as well its not too grindy, the only bad things that i can think of is that the matches are all team based, but thats the same for all mobas, and that there aren't a lot of maps 4 or 5.

I rated this at a 7 because I think it is good intro to the genre. It is like Mario Kart for serious racing games. Except take out the shells, the power ups, and any speed boosts you might get. Also take out any crashing. This gets boring really quick. HOTS has close to no depth at all. Don't know what your skills do? THATS OKAY!!! Just click the one that says it will deal more damage. You never have to last hit. You can suck as much as you want. As long as other people on your team just cooperate with one another, you will most likely win. The objectives in the match are nice... But really really gimmicky. I wanted this to be so much more. Its great to introduce to your friends who have either a) never played video games before or b) suck soooo bad at video games but they want to play something together that this is what you have to deduce to because you don't want to lose a friend. Solo play gets boring REALLY quick. To unlock anything you do have to grind it out a bit. Being a support is a joke. Keep in mind that this is still new and they can change many of this... The only issue I have is the time it will take to gather all the heroes using only gold you gain at the end of the game. It felt like if I died once, the scales would tip in the opponents favor and we could never recover.

After a while the game became very predicable. After the first five minutes, whichever team was in the lead would always win. 9 times out of 10 this was the opposite team.

If you try to quit and start a new game, the game punishes you and calls you a "leaver" and throws you back into the game you just quit. You cant start a new game until the last one ends.

Overall this game lifted me to the heights of enjoyment, the left me in the pits of dispair. Shame on you Blizzard. This will be my first and last MOBA.

Pro Tip: If you want people to keep playing your game, they should actually be able to win once in a while. Nothing makes someone lose interest faster than constantly losing with little hope of success.

Overall, the game feels clumsy, the movement, abilities, most of the champions feel the same: off tanks. In terms of graphics it demands more than it delivers.
The champions pool is constituted of old timers, some you will be pleased to re-encounter, but overall lacks originality. Few will surprise you. In terms of abilities they are too basic. Plus, if you dont buy them (with real money) it will take ages to get a decent amount of champions. In this aspect, seems worse than LoL.

And again, Blizzard picks up a good concept and ruins it, making a noob friendly game. If you are a competitive player, or even a demanded one, stay away from this game. I will.

I've given Heroes of the Storm a shot many times across the alpha, beta, and launch phases. I'll mostly comment on the current state of the game, as Blizzard seems to have settled on the bulk of the game's key features by now. My complaints are pretty straightforward, so I'll go with the Pro/Con format.

    Pros:
    - Beautifully designed game with some amazing characters from across all Blizzard worlds brought to life in a vibrant art style.
    - A solid attempt at bringing more casual players into the MOBA fold. Very easy to pick up and play.
    - Many characters and abilities feel very punchy and responsive.
    - Objective-oriented play is a breath of fresh air from the highly individually competitive structure of many other MOBAs (although - many players don't yet realize this and ignore objectives, leading to a swift loss)

    Mixed:
    - Simplification of the MOBA format across the board. This is a blessing and a curse, as you lose a lot of control but also avoid a lot of unnecessary frustration. Still, overall it tends to make the game feel very shallow.

    Cons:
    - Practically unplayable due to lag, disconnects, and crashes a large percentage of the time. This frequently led me to be counted as absent from games I played 100% of the way through, granting no XP or Gold even for a victory.
    - Extremely aggressive pricing has kept me from spending a single dime on the game, as characters and skins tend to cost around $10 apiece. The cost to unlock all of the content in the game is sky high. And if you're hoping to earn it all through the in game currency, good luck. It would take ages of constant play at a rate far slower than any other MOBA.
    - Absolutely broken matchmaking, made worse by the snowballing nature of the game format. You will know in the first 3 minutes whether your team will win or lose, as once a team gets ahead they almost invariably stay there.
    - Many characters and abilities feel completely useless, with no sign of incoming balancing.
    - Talents are locked behind level walls, which is a death sentence if you are prevented from leveling as per the above lag, crashes, and disconnects.

Perhaps in 6-12 months or so they'll have some of the bugs ironed out... Although, not to sound overly cynical, I've kinda lost faith in Blizzard's commitment to updating and improving their games. Money has become too central a factor in their design philosophy.

I love it! it's a refreshing spin on mobas. i was an avid League of legends player and a fan of games like starcraft/ diablo already. The games don't snowball the same way they do in league. Some maps are pretty hard. You have to balance objectives with lane-ing which is a challenge but can turn a loosing game into a winning one. I'm excited to see where this game goes in a few years.

So, il start with the bad first. My main gripe with Heroes of the Storm is the microstutter / freezing, especially when you on connected to the EU8 server. If you push Ctrl+Alt+F in game you can see which server you get connected to. There is a way to block this server via your firewall, however it tends to increase your matchmaking time exponentially.

Another issue is due to the sound quality / channels and it pushes your game out of sync, however this is fixed by simply reducing your sound quality down to medium and increase your channels from 32 to 64. A small fix but from a Blizzard game, i expected more.

Lastly, the match making, It's difficult to give a general opinion as being Ranked 1 Hero League, i will always be matched with lesser ranked opponents, that and my community always mix and match groups, so sometimes il be teamed up with lesser ranked friends. What i find shocking is when i enter Hero League or Quick match and absolutely roll the enemy comp who clearly don't have a clue. The matchmaking definitely needs some work.

    Now the good:

Heroes of the Storm (HotS) is everything you would want from a team-orientated casual MOBA and if you loved Diablo, Warcraft, Starcraft then you will enjoy pitting your favorite Heroes from these worlds against each other. It's a Blizzard fans wet dream. It removed the tedious mechanics found in DOTA/LoL like last hitting, it gives you shared xp so no benefit for that early game carry to get a quick kill and run away with the leveling. You lane on HotS just to "soak" xp, this is still an important mechanic in the game as if you neglect it, the enemy will soon run away with the levels, abilities and damage outputs, putting you at a disadvantage in teamfights.

The maps: There is a generous amount of maps, each with their own spin, all unique with their own unique primary objective (asides from destroying the enemy core). With a new map coming at the end of the month, there is alot to look forward to. All the maps are themed on the Blizzard games.

Graphics: I like them, maybe not for everybody but they are true to Blizzard with their slightly cartoonish fashion. The animations are solid, the visuals are appealing and the sound affects are fantastic.

In short, if you couldn't get to grips with the other MOBA's, want something a little more action packed, and more catering to casual (with pro-gamer sect) then this is for you. Being blizzard game, you can expect full support and i'm positive they will iron out the nagging issues in the near future.

First of all, I enjoyed this game for about 3-4 weeks but, the more time I spent on it the more I started to dislike this game.

I'll list some thing that bother me and try to explain it so everyone will be able to understand it. (My english is horrible btw.)

1, Garden Of Terror: My most hated map to date, I just couldn't believe how much Blizzard fu**ed up with this one. They put the most brainless gameplay into it, with farming frequently spawning neutral monsters to spawn a huge player controlled monster with a skill that disables an entire base and basically rapes the whole fort within seconds if there is no player around to prevent this skill from doing so, it would be fine if it was on a high cooldown or it couldn't be used more than twice per monster. But no, this fu**ing skill can just be spammed until the opposite team somehow (the monster also has a movement speed boost and a 2-6 sec aoe cc with low cooldown) managed to kill this f**k.

    2. Haunted Mines: Pray to the matchmaking they put a tank, a support and an assassin with medium to high burst in your team. Otherwise the enemy team will just snowball your as* to nirvana because if your team gets behind at the beginning of the game you could surrender instantly (if you could). The map is again designed on farming frequently spawning neutral skeletons to power up an skullgolem (which spawn for both teams after you killed all skeletons) to push one of your lanes to oblivion. The strength is based on the amount of skeletons killed and skulls collected. Sounds fun at first but if you f**k up once and let the other team collect about 20 more skulls than yours, the golem will simply destroy one building after another put their team about 1-2 levels above yours and lower your chance to turn that match to your favor to almost 0. Also the golems respawns at the spot you killed it.

    3. Permanent stealth/Nova: Who on earth had the idea that permanent invisibility was a good idea in the first place? It's just ridiculous, yeah you can see where they are because they blur the texture slightly, but if you have some vision problems like me (even with glasses) you can't see them most of the time and (as for Nova) they just instaburst your as* and leave as if nothing happend. And in most soloq matches your team doesn't even try to group up, so you have almost no counterplay potentional as an class other than an assassin. Even though Nova is considered a bad pick in matches with experienced players, casual players or beginners lose to her most of the time. Towers also can't see through stealth.

    4. Hero costs: Im not complaining about the cash grab stuff, if you waste money on a Moba it's your fault. The gold prices of some heroes, especially the 10k gold heroes, are just ridiculous. It would be fine if you could earn about 100-200 gold per match, but no, they leave you with 20/30 (lose/win) gold per match. If you spent money on stimpacks you have a bonus of 150%, so it would be 50/75 gold per match. You need about ~500-134 matches or ~10000-2680 minutes just for 1 hero.

    5. Most heroes: Last but not least are most of the heroes. If there were no lore or something relateable to them, I wouldn't even look at some of them. Every class has more than 2 heroes that are basically the same, heck most of them even have to use the same talents in order to fulfill their role. Instead of giving them unique abilitys to fit into their roles, most of them have to use the same attack speed steroid or the same blocking ability.

I played this game for a while now, and with the highest level of 40 and about 250 games played I have to say that this game is not good. It's is not horrible or trash oder something like this, but it lost it charme way to fast for a Moba.

I've played the game since technical alpha. I've seen it evolve through the year from input-laggy, bland, unpolished game with potential to one of the best 5v5 brawler games. Note that I don't say MOBA, but brawler, not because of Blizzard marketing but because putting HotS together with DotA and LoL is like putting CoD and TF2 in FPS bucket - pointless.

To understand why HotS is a great game you have to look at it from an unbiased position. you have to unlearn what you've learned, as Yoda would say. It is not enough to say that there is no last-hitting, experience is shared and there are several maps to describe HotS. This game is fundamentally different from DotA and LoL and even Smite, however, if you're a fan of one of these games and try out HotS you will miss out on its promise.

As a game centered around various maps and completing objectives against enemy team, this game has no equal. It is a 20-25 minute stress-test, where to win you have not only to fight the enemy team but to know what to do on the map to maximise the potential, and since the game is short, you have very little time to make a decision. This is what makes HotS so compelling.. The pace of the game, the objectives and lack of last hitting/laning requires a different approach to thinking about the whole process.

When is it safe to take the boss? When will the siege camp do most damage? Should we sacrifice the objective in favour of a sneaky play? Which ultimate ability suits the map, the enemy team and own team composition? The clock is ticking...

Objectively, the game has stellar Blizzard polish. The interface is minimalistic and slick, graphics are improved from SC2 and the colors are much more pronounced. The heroes are well animated and the in-game dialogue is often humorous.

This game is not better or worse than DotA2. It is a different game with a different skill set and on its own it's a masterpiece of Blizzard design once again. My advice if you come from MOBAs is to give it a solid try, not 2-3 games but a 100. After all, I doubt anyone learnedan DotA in less than a 100 games and HotS is no different. Only then will the underlying mechanics become more apparent.

Thats just stupid, especially because the reasoning behind it is almost the most dumb **** i ever read. Its a TEAM game, get over it. It is so from the very beginning of HotS. So no more single snowballing like crazy and then roll over 5 other people solo just because 1-2 in your team are very bad. In HotS there is actually very low snowballing if any at all. And thats good. work as a team or lose, thats how it works. And it is free 2 play. but you dont ever have to buy anything for money. and people complaining about that its too much grind... League of Legends has almost the same if not even more grind. You have to level your account then get champions and then get runes etc. that takes a **** ton of time.

And people complaining about it beeing slow? What are those people smoking? Should i remember you of the very very slow and BORING first 15 minutes in a League of Legends game? Where you sit in lane, do stupid last hiting while you fall asleep? In HotS you have action after the first 1-2 minutes, you dont need 5 minutes to even get all of your spells. And most important, the games dont last like 45 minutes that a big big plus in my opinion. And much more important not just ONE stupid map all the time, the maps are awesome in HotS and gets the OLD MOBA genre a very very fresha nd good vibe and feel to it.

This is a great game, with room to improve. Comparing it to League and Dota, its hard not to shake that feeling of casual-ness Hots ends up relaying. Last hitting is not a necessary mechanic anymore, Talents have been implemented in place of items, and the whole slough of things just seems to hail from a time when things were simpler.

Last hitting is not a necessary mechanic anymore, Talents have been implemented in place of items, and the whole slough of things just seems to hail from a time when things were simpler.
Then you've played for 8 days total time in game, with 550 games under your built, have a Rank 6 account, and realize you love this game.
    Pros:
Every character feels unique and plays differently. I recognize this isn't hard to do when your character pool is 1/3 that of your competitors, but they've done it well so far, and you only launch with so many. I haven't even felt the same way about any other MOBA since playing Abathur, no other game has seemed to have anything on that level.
With items gone and having 2-5 choices on talents every 3 levels, builds felt limited when you first start. once you get the hang of the game and you see that there are so many different ways to play each Hero, Talents take on a whole new level of detail that promotes conuterplay even after champ select, something the other games only touch. Is that a enemy Valla a Siege, Anti-tank, or Burst Valla? Is that Uther a CC Tank, a Healer, or a Nuker? You have to actually look at your enemies talents and adjust.
The maps are different. At first this is a huge deal, providing a completely different feel to each match to the taste of 7 different flavors (8 later this month). Once that wears off it starts to feel like the same old thing, matches revolve around ganking, pushing, and the objective regardless of the map. When you have more experience, and especially in ranked draft play, you know the maps require you to go at the objectives in different ways. This results in different strategies in each map. For Haunted mines are you running a mobility team to just hit and run the objective avoiding the enemy team, or are you running a team fight group of Heroes, trying to hunt them down before they get the objectives. These strategies vary from map to map, team to team.

Cons: I did mention room to improve didn't I
The Matchmaker. You'll read about this in every decent review. Its currently horrible, there's just no other word for it. Quick match is just seemingly random, you never know what kind of teammates you're going to get. In Ranked Hero League, this problem becomes a little more prevalent. When you're playing for keeps and you're Rank 12 with 80 games played and you got a Rank 45 with 3 games played on your team, it might not end so hot. Or it might. Who knows? The matchmaker seems to be all over the place. Hots (and most other MOBAs for that matter) uses an MMR system to place people together, but it never quite seems to do its job.
Clarity: Sometimes I wonder what Blizzard is trying to hide. They have continuously patched their shop to be less and less accessible . Its much easier to browse what you can purchase (both in game gold and IRL money) from hero select than it is from their actual shop currently. When you read a Hero's Abilities and Talents from the Hero select screen, it gives you a basic understanding of what the Hero does and who they function, but the numbers are all scaled to level 1 with no information on how they scale. So you have zero understanding of what those numbers actually accomplish until you've played the Hero at least a few times. They could stand with a little more transparency on what exactly you get when you level up (to be fair, there are numerous sites that can show you how things scale and how numbers are derived. Even a phone app).

Last Word: Hots, as game, is simply more fun than other MOBAs. It is less comprehensive, yes, but don't let anyone tell you that it doesn't take as much skill. People will say the skill cap is lower than other games, but they're wrong. Hots merely does away with skill BARRIERS, such as having to learn each and every item and its relation to your character (lets face in League, I don't want to build an AD Nami, so 2/3 of those items are useless to me anyways).
With no last hitting, we have a game that skips the laning phase, resulting in around 20 minute matches that let you have a great comeback potential. Instead of relying on snowballing, with shared XP, the lower performers on the team are literally buffed by the good ones, yielding better results for the team compared to the individual. As long as everyone is trying to participate with the team, that ALWAYS makes for better game play.
Hots is for people who like to have fun while playing. I love League, but I also love Hots, sometimes people feel like we have to pick. With Hots, there is much less rage. Thats not to say the community is any better, all MOBAs have just the worst people playing them (I know, I'm playing them), but the rage baiting is a much less significant factor with Hots, this might be its biggest strength. Happy gaming!

Getting heroes is a bit slow, but there are 4 ways (playing games, daily quests, leveling of player, leveling of hero) of getting the gold used to buy heroes without paying money. In addition there are 7 free to play heroes each week. Notice that some heroes are less expensive than others, and this does not necessarily correlate to how strong the hero is.

    On team game play:
Yes, the game is heavily team dependent, just as a team game should be. It is nice that the goal is to play with your team rather than against your team. The is no need for kill stealing or last hitting. As it is very team dependent, voice chat is helpful and just about mandatory for playing at a high level. Many players use skype or teamspeak.

    On quick match:
For playing casually, not highly competitive. Try to keep this in mind before complaining about matchmaking or getting upset with your team. The draft in ranked is ideal for selecting appropriate heroes for the map and situation.

    On ranked:
Hero league is not perfect, but nothing is. There is not a reliable way to gauge individual skill in a team game, most methods can be manipulated with a little creativity. That being said I am glad there is not a leaderboard for individuals. What I do like is that, although slightly slow, the matchmaking system attempts to match both players of similar skill and parties of similar sizes. Because of this it is not a requirement to play with groups of 4 or 5 to get to rank 1 (I didn't). Team league will accurately show the skill of a team, but at the moment there are a whole lot of people playing with full teams at that level yet. Rank 1 hero league is not roughly the top 2% as described, but more like roughly top 10% in a system made to help people feel good.

    On toxicity:
It is human nature for people to blame anyone but themselves. It is still somewhat uncommon in this new game but has steadily increased since the alpha. I would suggest either muting the chat and communicating through pings (default is G) or grouping with players who you can trust to be reasonably friendly. In fact, most of the reason I got to rank 1 was by playing with people I could rely on to work as a team, rather than exclusively playing with very skilled players (the ranking system takes into account who you play with unless they throw their mmr by intentionally losing - this is unfortunately how the system can be manipulated).

    On balancing/patches:
The games is relatively balanced at the moment. Big changes only come every couple months, but at least this gives players time for things to settle and builds to be experimented with before the meta is changed with the next patch.

    Tips for getting good:
Pay attention to what works and what doesn't. Hotslogs (google it) gives good statistics for this. Just like any moba, knowing how each hero is played prepares you to play against and counter them. As mentioned earlier you will likely see a boost in your win rate when you play with people who work together.

Gone are the generic itemisation of the traditional MOBA games, replaced by a talent system that is specific to each hero, which offers more unique customisation to that hero, something which you don't get with a universal item system.
Multiple maps gives players something new to experience every time they play, different team-comps works very different on each map and players will need to adapt and strategize.
Games are usually 15 mins long with both teams going at each-other from the start, players no longer needs to sit in lane making sure they get their last hits with the item shop gone. The shared experience (which is equivalent to the economy system) is the same across a team, encouraging players to rotate and help out team-mates without worrying they could have gotten more last hits and power for themselves. It also means one player can't have all the power funnelled into them and snowball out of control (which is a one of the primary goal in traditional MOBAs), therefore you have to work with their team to overcome the enemy team without being artificially more powerful than everyone else.
Whilst the core game-play is hugely exciting, there are still some problems with things such as ranked modes and matchmaking at times. Though the game is very new and Blizzard has acknowledged the issues and are working on it.
Whether you're a fan of MOBA games or not, Heroes of the storm is definitely worth a try.

That being said it has some problems right now. The biggest 2 are matchmaking being BAD, like really bad, and the prices and gold earning rate are both poor too. Prices are horrible but gold earning rates initially seem good up until you start running out of bonuses. Then you realize a month or two later how bad they actually are. It makes League of Legends look generous and I HATE runes.

Then you have alot of smaller issues like Blizzard not communicating very well, making completely odd changes nobody wanted like removing the ability to easily see critical buffs and removing the ability to see prices in the shop. It's actually easier to see prices in hero select than the SHOP atm.

You also have a rather poor reconnect system and spectator UI/casting client, bad drafting UI/functionality, etc. They've got a long way to go just yet.

But when they get there this will be the best MOBA on the market hands down IMO. I'm just not going to give them much of my money until they fix pricing.

Yes, I know Blizzard insists it has transcended the genre of MOBA and is a "hero brawler" but a FPS game that insists it is an "Enemy Blaster" is still an FPS and should be compared as such.

In addition the game is lacking basic features and the performance and netcode is incredibly poor and simply not up to the standard of the polished MOBA games on the market today, as a result of using an ancient SC2 engine with no multithreading that has always had poor netcode.

And that's all failing to mention to horrible cash shop implementation and the prohibitive price of the limited hero pool as it is. This game is simply yet another cash grab by Blizzard to support the falling subscriptions of WoW

Here are, in no particular order, the reasons why I think HOTS is a bad game.

-No individual skill, the game is about walking in groups of 5, then standing in circles while facerolling and aiming in the enemy's general direction. Individually, you pretty much have no CC and damage, and the game is, overall, not punishing at all. Just compare getting hooked by Pudge in Dota / Blitz in
Here are, in no particular order, the reasons why I think HOTS is a bad game.

-No individual skill, the game is about walking in groups of 5, then standing in circles while facerolling and aiming in the enemy's general direction. Individually, you pretty much have no CC and damage, and the game is, overall, not punishing at all. Just compare getting hooked by Pudge in Dota / Blitz in LoL to getting hooked by stitches in HOTS. While getting hooked in bot Dota and Lol is a punishment for being out of position and pretty much a death sentence if your teammates aren't around. In HOTS you almost want to thank Stitches for bringing you closer to the enemy.

    - Shared levels, this is just terrible. In other games you're supposed to protect the most critical characters so they don't fall behind. In this game it doesn't matter. Ganked the carry 8 times ? Well that's okay, the support got the xp for him so it doesn't make a difference whether the carry lives or dies. It's not like people are separated on lanes anyway, as I said in my previous point the game pretty much rewards you for playing as a choo choo train from level 1 until the end.

    - No gold, this just adds insult to injury. So you're not only forgiven for being unable to XP by yourself, you're also forgiven for being unable to land a killing blow. So levels don't matter, gold doesn't matter, kills don't matter.... What matters in this game ? Is capping circles and facerolling really that much of a reward in itself ?

-A LOT of heroes are similar : Straight line skillshot, cone skillshot, escape mechanism and AOE ult. Well at least that reduces the number of necessary purchases. Speaking of which...

    - 10 dollars a hero. That's just completely ridiculous. If the game was F2P or cheaper people would at least give Blizzard the benefit of the doubt. But with such ludicrous prices it just makes Blizzard point perfectly clear : This game is just an attempt at making some easy money off a popular genre. I'm sorry but if Heroes of Newerth and Smite, both made by much smaller studios, can survive on (respectively) selling skins only / a pretty cheap heroes bundle, then there is no reason why Blizzard, which is already extremely rich, has to grab that much money.

Let's face it, if this game wasn't made by Blizzard people wouldn't even have blinked an eye when it was released. And don't give me that "but they tried to innovate !" excuse, they didn't innovate anything. Capping circles is at least a 20 year old concept, everything else is just a streamlined and dumbed down dota-like experience.

This game deserves a 3/10. I give it a 1 to counter the fanboys that would pretty much give Blizzard's leftovers a 10/10

Myself and two family members got to test during BETA. As it is Blizardized, it is the simplified version of LOL and DOTA 2. With all the fluffy stuff that makes Blizzard so appealing to the masses. Which was perfect for my family as we were new to MOBA's. The game was fun at first, but there weren't enough players of each category to make evenly skilled matches. So if your a casual and you end up against a semi-pro or pro you get destroyed. Which ruins it for casuals. And makes the better players bored. HOTS has several maps. Daily quests to open characters and to open up ranked play. HOTS also has far fewer characters than say DOTA 2. Which should be very appealing to those new to MOBA's. But could seem like a grind or boring to more seasoned MOBA fans.

Ultimately the level of competition will decide if this game becomes bigger than LOL. Blizzard can throw big bucks at tournaments and make pro teams legends. If the LOL and DOTA 2 pro's don't fill the void, there is a huge opportunity for semi pro or lower ranked pro teams to dominate the scene here and make the big money in tournaments and from sponsorships. With Blizzard's notoriety and casual approach, HOTs could just be the game that makes E-sports explode on the scene in the west. Blizzard was a late comer who ended up dominating MMO's. They are hoping lightning will strike twice and they will dominate MOBA's. Only time will tell if that happens. But at this point LOL is the giant purple gorilla in the room.

If Blizzard made this game with windows 10, and quickly launches it for X1 and PS4, tablets, phones this game could just be positioned to dominate the MOBA world. As it is trimmed down just enough to easily fit in with console online matches.

The grind to get new heroes takes way longer than LoL... so there is a strong encouragement to spend real money to progress. I have no quarrel with spending money on games, but it may put off some people.

Overall, I would highly recommend this game to any new or seasoned MOBA player.

Great! The best MOBA out there. No more bad game mechanics of last hitting. No longer do you have to compete against your team in a team game. Its a fresh, fast, streamlining of what a MOBA should be. For the first time a MOBA feels like it was designed by professionals. Leaving in the good bits and removing the toxic bits. If you want a fast paced competitive team game look no further.

It was in beta and open beta for many months, so I thought it will be all nicely polished and bug free, but unfortunately it isn't. As long as you play in a single player it's fine, yes, visuals look 10 years old, but at least it plays smoothly even on lower rigs. The problem starts when you try to play this game online, which is ironically supposed to be it's main draw. You get frequent lag, stuttering and right during my very first game - BSOD. Not just a crash to desktop, but good old Blue Screen Of Death! Last time this happened to me was sometime in the 90's and it's a shame Blizzard put something like this out, considering most of their games in the past were pretty stable. Tried playing some other matches and it's like weather, sometimes it plays well, other times it won't even load, gets stuck on loading screen, logging in and out and other problems and glitches. One time my heroes didn't load so I couldn't start new matches. Even menus and game UI don't scale properly to your used resolutions. The state of this game right now is pretty disappointing and I'm tired of developers releasing these buggy and of non-functional products. Other than that, the game itself can be fun at first, but it gets quite repetitive very quickly, there is not much strategy involved, no story whatsoever and the gameplay is not exactly fluid either. The potential is definitely there, I really like the huge selection of different heroes with various unique abilities, so just trying them out can be fun. Another problem is that it's heavily team based, so if you get bad team you're out of luck, because you can't do that much on your own. Most matches are decided in first 5 mins, because once your team starts to loose, everyone in your team is usually logging out, giving up and you're just there to wait for defeat for another 10 mins, not fun at all. Thankfully it's a free game, so there is no loss in trying it out for yourself, but I would advise to wait a while until Blizzard patches everything up and the game gets more stable. 5/10 Expand

Obviously there are going to be the comparisons to games like DOTA and LoL, there certainly are similarities, but in many respects they aren't justified. By differentiating itself so drastically, Heroes of the Storm is bringing in an entirely different player base all together, there will obviously be unhappy players from other MOBA's move across, but ultimately it will do more to introduce more players to the genre, than to kill off either of the other two big dogs. Die hard players of any of the 3 games will remain so, but casual players, or those looking to get into the genre will almost certainly gravitate towards Heroes of the Storm because it successfully manages to draw a player in, and then keep them playing for longer, by making it about teamwork, minimizing in-match grinding, an maximizing variety through team fighting, hero types, and maps with key objectives.

Currently the matchmaking system is something of a shambles, but having sat through various incarnations of release, Alpha, Closed Beta, Open Beta, Launch, the matchmaking is always a bit of a shambles out of the gate before settling into a fairly competitive (player to player) system, it's not in-depth enough to match based on skill or win percentage with a particular hero, or even class, so you may get a great player using a hero and role the are unfamiliar with, which may translate to a train smash; but you will frequently square off against, or beside, familiar players, which is great, especially if you're carrying a grudge.

Matches are ~20 mins in length, which always seems to feel longer, but each game settles into a good pace, and keeps the action coming thick and fast. By and large the maps are great, with a variety of objectives that can quickly change the landscape of a match and play to individual players strengths or weaknesses. The only real gripe as far as maps go would be the Garden of Terror, where games on average seem to take 5 minutes longer, part of it is due to the volume of contestable objectives, the other part seems to be that the Garden Terror unit itself needs a bit of a buff, as even in the late game it can be cut down quickly without making much of an impact on the enemy defenses.

Team experience is shared, and while you occasionally get games where one team jumps out to a lead, and compounds upon it through a combination of player kills, fort kills and objective catches, there is always a sense that winning one decisive team fight lat in the game can change the dynamic of the match. It is something of an artificial mechanic, but one that rewards great teamwork, can punish selfishness, and allow a team that may not have initially been cohesive, to remain in the match if they can form some kind of degree of cohesion.

the lack of will always be a contentious issue, but the use of talents at various levels throughout the match is a solid system, with each adding a layer of diversity, and adaptability throughout a match, without making them unbeatable (or unplayable) depending on whether you choose the right or wrong talent at any given level. It's not only a forgiving decision, it encourages experimentation to find a build that suits an individual players play style, without needing extensive knowledge, or theory crafting.

The basic marketplace structure seems fair, where cosmetics like mounts and skins cost real money, while heroes can be purchased with real money, or in-game currency earned by playing matches, or completing daily quests. However, the actual pricing seems to be about double what it reasonably should, particularly for the cosmetic aspects. What people generally forget is that while the game is "free-to-play" it costs to be made available. Servers cost money, development teams cost money, so while it's free to play, it's not free to make. That said, most players can justify $10 a month for a new hero, but throw in 2 per month (as we will see in June), and skins at the same price, and devoted players (and completionists alike) can quickly spend upwards of $50 in a single purchase. Given the massive player base at launch, chopping 25% (or even 50%) across the board could be achieved, without compromising the overall quality of the game. Alternatively, you can buy all the heroes, and their master skins, by playing your behind off and accumulating the in-game currency, just don't expect any of the cosmetic options.

The graphics are slick, sounds, animations, and collisions are all Triple A level as you would expect, each hero feels unique, and has been given the love and attention that you would expect for one that pulls together some of the most beloved characters in the Blizzard universe (if not, all gaming), across the board they are well balanced, but you feel they will be in a constant state of re-balancing as new heroes are added, players develop (and exploit) various metas and so on.

It's a great game, well worth your time.

There's less complexity, the games are quick and easy to start, and the community is relatively welcoming. As with most MOBAs, there's a free rotating set of champions that you can use to try out the game and see if you like it. Like all Blizzard games, it has a ton of polish and rare technical hiccups.

If you have played MOBAs before, what you think about this HOTS will depend largely on how you feel about the other games you've tried. For example, if you are a diehard DOTA 2 fan and love everything about it, you will probably hate this game, because it is basically the anti-DOTA. On the other hand, if there are aspects of other MOBAs that you dislike, HOTS may be the game for you.

Most MOBA's are like football games, where each player has certain very well defined tasks and places they are suppose to defend/attack. And like football, they tend to be chess matches with a lot of time spent jockeying for position and small advantages. In HOTS, you don't play a position; you play a champion. Each has a broadly defined role like "kill enemies," "destroy buildings," or "protect teammates," but the way they accomplishes those goals can vary wildly. More than any other MOBA, the champion you choose will have a dramatic impact on how you play. Thus, strategy is less about "being a good jungler" and more about "being a good Nova." The disadvantage of this approach is that it takes more thought to formulate team based strategies. The advantage is that you don't have people rage quitting because they couldn't go mid. Actually, let me emphasize that point. In public games, everybody gets to play the champion they want to play every time they play. You're never forced to play a champion or role you don't want to. It may make for more unbalanced teams, but that's less important than in other MOBAs, since playing well is more important than having the "perfect" party composition in this game.

Another important thing to decide is how you feel about teamwork. In HOTS, you can lead your team to victory, but you can't CARRY your team to victory. It's designed so that you will all win or lose together. Whether you love or hate this fact will play a major role in how you feel about this game. In LOL, I've demolished entire enemy teams by myself and lost the same way against diamond ranked opponents. Decide for yourself if you want to play a game where one player can dominate everybody.

Finally, there's a lot more maps in HOTS, and the side objectives are a lot more important. In a game like LOL, objectives just give your team an edge (more mana, lower cooldowns, more damage). If you succeed in reaching an objective in HOTS, the map literally joins your side for a while, sending monsters to fight your enemy or even attacking their base directly. This makes objectives both more important and (to me), more interesting. There's also a much greater variety of objectives, since they're different from map to map, and they all greatly change how a match plays out. Personally, I like the variety, but many might find it intimidating to have so many maps to learn. There is a description of the objectives each time a map loads as well as in-game tutorials and practice vs. bots.

Personally, I like this game better than LOL and I detest DOTA. The reasons are entirely a matter of personal preference. I'd rather team fight than last hit minions. I'm not giving HOTS a high review because it's an objectively better game than other MOBAs. The gameplay mechanics are just more enjoyable for me. For the same reason, your mileage may vary, depending on what you like or don't like about MOBAs.

Decent eye-candy only on highest settings and it's a resource whore of a game.
Heroes' abilities are VERY underwhelming for the most part. Maps are boring and not balanced at all - every game is a snowball fest, you might get a close game in 1/50 cases IF YOU"RE LUCKY. Worst part? The grind needed to get out of QuickMatch

The game itself is, as expected, in no way exceptional. It draws on the shoulders of other successes and I can honestly say I will never play it again after an hour of play in which my heart sunk and my faith in this one time great company vanished. I think the game has a GREAT future if blizzard decides to update it and keep it growing but at its current state it is pretty stale outside the one patch every 1-2 months they release.

The main thing that I have to knock this game for though vs the other many moba's i enjoy is that there is no real sense of being able to "carry" - As much as moba's are a team game i enjoy the aspect of locking in a hero or champion and knowing if I get ahead then I can carry my team through the team fights if I play well enough. In heroes if I get stuck with a troll or someone who refuses to help the team well then the game is almost for sure a lose because its SOOOOO team focused that there is no chance of picking up a troll's slack.

Overall I say the game is fun but grows stale and there is a lot of room from growth that blizzard could make this a great game but I see it going the routes of hearthstone where it will just fade off after awhile.

Lets look it this way now:

    Winning gives points
    Loosing losses points
Each time you get xxx amount points player ranks up.
So you get this awesome meaningless 1-50ranks. And it feels like leveling up nothing more. Some games have death penalty and player losses xp and doing stuff they gain xp. This is exactly as heroes of the storm ranked.
No proper leaderboards, no proper matchmaking, rank 1 is meaningless due its not used for anything (matches are matched based on hidden mmr) and at rank 1 player cannot stay without having 60-70% win rate which is only achieved in 4-5 man party. And if player wishes they can try their luck at rank 1 as solo players like i've done. Be rdy to drop down and climb back due game is forcing 50% winrate to all players (unless using party of 4-5 players) so player cannot stay and gain cap of points at rank 1.

Gameplay wisely its well done, decent balance and well blizzards game. But nonexisting competitive environment and bad matchmaking makes it worse moba / team brawler game out there.

The matchmaking is complete bogus. The level system and farm system is almost nonexistent making the players not even care about how they actually play their roles in the game, getting levels together with the whole team and not having gold or items made this game a complete waste of time since you really have no reward for being a good player.

So there you have it Blizzard, this games is bad, and the only reason it even gets good reviews is because it's a Blizzard game and have WoW characters in it. And because the majority of people giving good reviews to this game was a first time player on MOBA type games and don't have experience with actual MOBA games to compare with.

1 - You can't level alone in HotS, whole team levels at the same time. This makes the game seriously team based.

2 - There is no last hit, or gold. This eliminates solo farmers when there is a team fight. Exp is important though, there are certain times when teams must kill creeps to gain exp.

3 - Right now there are 7 maps with different settings, objectives and play styles.

I've played 50+ as Malfurion healing and today was put in a team with LiLi (another healer) so I decided to shift my tried-and-true spec to do more damage and discovered a very different, very fun and effective way to play a toon I thought I knew pretty well.
The maps haven't begun to get boring but I'd still like to see twice as many to keeps things fresher (sure that is all in the works). Games are fast paced and rely on solid team dynamics and player skill. You can definitely make a difference playing solo depending on class and playing well make a huge, self-rewarding impact on the flow and results of each game. Granted I haven't played much Dota or LoL and as my bro commented, those games can have a sense of anticipation and suspense you might not get from Heroes. But comparisons are odious and I really feel this title stands on its own.

The community is pretty good so far. I've made ~5 new Bnet friends the past couple days just playing good QM matches and healing like a boss.

Come backs are very possible at most points during the game and that keeps things exciting, not letting dominating teams slack off. It's not like Mario Kart random blue turtle shells, the ebb and flow of each match is the direct result of smart team play and individual skill in team battles.

I think the "easy to learn, hard to master" cliche is appropriate here, and while Dota vets might have an argument with the stripped down nature of some of the Heroes mechanics, the game has a tremendous amount of depth.

Characters all feel surprisingly unique and well-thought-out. The visuals and sound along with player abilities make landing skills make a fun and visceral impact.

Importantly, the market has some ridiculously priced items ($15 for a skin!?), but generally the system is fair. There are a number of cheap heroes one can purchase within the first few hours with in-game gold. Keep playing and doing dailies and getting to level 30 for hero league and you'll have ten heroes (easily) within 30 hours or less without paying a dime of real currency. Now, the starter bundles are cheap and a great value. And don't forget the weekly specials on heroes where you can get 1 or 2 half off for less than a pint or two of craft beer. The game is definitely not pay-to-win. I admittedly have coughed up about $30 but now I have enough heroes to play and master for weeks if not months (~16). Doing dailies and taking advantage of leveling rewards you can easily build a solid bench of top-tier heroes in a matter of days without spending real money.

I've been pretty surprised how much fun I've had with this game and I would highly recommend anyone interested in MOBAs, action-rpgs, blizzard, or competitive video games in general to give this title a shot. It is free after all.

Naturally if you are looking for a very difficult experience where eventually you'll be able to just make a new account and rofl stomp noobs all day then Dota is for you, HOTS is simple enough where even a brand new player can pose a threat and doesn't have to worry about cookie cutter or counter builds nearly as much as other games.

People are very often complaining about the 'pay to play' model in HOTS which is quite frankly stupid, they give you new free characters to play with and try out every week, the gold from games may not be as plentiful as other games (slightly slower to grind gold from wins in HOTS than LoL) but the dailies are very rewarding and of course as you level up you will gain a lot of gold as well, it does NOT take 6 months to get the heroes if you do it right and all you care about is hero league.

They did it on purpose where it would take a while to get into hero league but it does not in any shape form or fashion take 6 months to get into it unless you are purchasing only high priced heroes. Assuming you aren't the type of person that sits and plays 10-20 games a day you will most likely easily have the gold from doing your dailies to get into hero league by the time you reach 35ish. Of course this game isn't aimed at people who sit and play 8-10 hours a day it is SUPPOSED to be a more casual experience but has the option for a higher competitive play as well.

As far as how is the game feel compared to LoL and Dota? In my opinion it is an insane improvement the only problem being how much snowball there is. Instead of sitting there pelting minions and fleeing in terror if something so much as sneezes in the early game you will find yourself face deep in the action at almost all times, the maps are small enough to make almost every encounter a large team fight and people will go hard. If you play LoL for its slow pace because you aren't a fan of **** hitting the fan fast and hard then this is NOT the game for you, you will NOT be laning for 20 minutes before contemplating pushing forward you WILL have to push the towers within the first 5 minutes of the game and in some cases the keeps if you really wreck the other team. So if you like the laid back ignoring toxic team chat from LoL or using strategic clicking for an hour in Dota you might wanna stay there cause HOTS compared to those two is like comparing Diablo (LoL and Dota) to Halo 3 (HOTS).

Be prepared to be frustrated LoL players, the games are actually balanced and you will find yourself ostracized if you use toxicity, you also can't reset or tank your MMR to pick on new players since the more games you play the less your MMR is affected, and even if you do you won't be wiping the floor with anyone since you can't selfishly ignore the team, the team is everything in HOTS.

9/10 definitely a good MOBA for people who like playing MOBAs in the late game and don't only care about trying to pick on new players and selecting OP characters.

It's fun, but the amount of grinding needed to get a character is ridiculous. On top of that, the pricing for real purchases is way too high. I like LoL because of it's diversity from the get go. You can't really have diversity if everyone plays the same 6-free characters.

2.Nothing matters-First of all the heroes are with similar stats and they have equal power. So teamfight's are just one big **** can't kill person alone because it take's 5 **** minutes to do so.You can't chase most of the time because the spell range is so small. You have no gold or items and your level is shared with your teammates. You don't have any advantage what so ever no matter what you do you are weak. You have no progress.
3.The Maps are stupid-There are like 5 variations of 1 map with different objective wich are so lame. For instance you have to kill one golem in the jungle and collect seeds and if you collect enough he comes to fight for your team and destroys enemy base in 2 pushes. So the objective is not to destroy enemy fortress. The object is to kill a **** neutral and win the game because of that.

I will not talk about well known & accepted differences from other MOBAs, like less grinding, walking, soloing & more action, I'd like to talk about a couple of questionable mechanics choices: 1) Replacing items with talents 2) Replacing individual hero levels with team levels.

Replacing items with talents seems like a good thing in general, cause talents allow for really interesting and individual choices and make game much easier to balance. Also nobody is forcing you to get certain standard, best builds like in other MOBAs. Generally it allows for better variety of choices than items.

But there is a huge drawback here: lack of personal exp & money takes away sense of individual achievement from killing enemies, denying kills/exp. In other MOBAs you level up and buy items, using your personal cash that you get from making plays. When I get to choose a talent in HOTS I feel as if I got it for free, just cause the time has come. And though you have your personal talents, they are always on the same level as your teammates and often as your enemies.
Also in other MOBAs everyone can see the result of your efforts clearly (when you are fed for example:), in HOTS often you can't even see it yourself (when you get nothing for killing enemy).

I think Blizzard didn't realize just how important items & levels are for sense of achievement, satisfaction. People play MOBAs cause they want to have opportunity to be better than others, to get cool staff, people want for remaining 9 players on the map to see how strong they are! No such opportunities in HotS - you are just like everyone else here.

If similar system were implemented in LoL (for example), it would look like this: everyone gets 4000g in 10, 20, 30 min marks, and no individual gold/exp for kills and farming. That would just kill the game instantly!

    Concerning HOTS's replayability:
HOTS does leave good impression on it's replayability eary on, bu i think that's largely due to having different maps (7 total). After I got used to differences between maps, games started to get less fun. May be it's cause I don't get that sense of achievement from it's matches as from other MOBAs, and cause I don't get that desire to correct past mistakes and outplay enemies each game in HOTS. Not only individual play matter less in HOTS, actually whole eary-mid game doesn't affect end result much!

Concerning HOTS being free to play: You will NOT be able to get many heroes without using real money.

Good game overall, I'm thankful to Blizzard that it showed different direction for MOBAs.
Tried to keep it short, thanks for reading:)

I have to tip my hat to Blizz for managing to create all those ICONS from DIABLO, SC and WOW and mangage to keep the feeling that you are actually controlling that hero you loved from previous blizz games and at the same time keep it balanced.

Graphicly speaking, it's a probably one of the best looking MOBA's out there.

That being, said... I do have a few problems with the games.

The different game maps for one thing. The idea of a lot of map objectives is nice and it does make the game more dynamic and direct-to-action oriented than most MOBA's, but at the same time... It does make the game less strategic and competive. For now, HOTS simply does not have any Metagame with clear defining positions and roles to assume. It's one big mess where you need to keep roaming all over the place.

It certainly is fun, but if you looking for high end strategy with everyone assuming a specific role and position, than you are going to be disappointed.

This is a the perfect MOBA to play for pure fun. But I really don't see HOTS being the next big competitive E-sport of this generation. The maps and overall game mechanics simply don't encourage you to fill a specific role and position in a match...

The shared XP and stats is a good idea on paper but it also creates a problem : You start not paying attention to your personal perfomances within the team. Sure, people are less likely to be toxic to you now. But at the same time, you don't have to worry about improving your own perfomances anymore. In LOL if you farm 80 creeps and the opposite lane farms 120 of them, you know that you are doing something wrong. Having clear stats showing when you rock or when you suck is important because that's will allow you to measure your progress. HOTS has no such feature and therefor does not encourage you to improve/correct yourself.

If you take LOL for exemple, you know that :

    1) You need TOP : TANK/bruiser; Mid : MAGE/ASSASSIN/AP CARRY, BOTTOM : SUPPORT+AD CARRY, JUNGLE.

    2) One balanced map, that has 3 clear games phases.

    3) LOL allows more chances of a "come back" than HOTS. In LOL, because XP isn't shared for the most part. One carry can turn around a whole match. In HOTS, if your team is underperfoming and everyone will underleveled to the enemy team. Meaning that if enemy gains 2-3 levels over your team, you have very little chances to win a 5 vs 5 exchange. Not saying that they are no chances of a come back in HOTS, but most of time, if your team slacks of ... Than you are doomed to suffer the consequences of their mistakes. This is really frustrating, as in LOL... I know that If i am 3 levels behind than it's my fault and I don't punish my team too much for it. In Heroes, 2 bad team mates can drag your own perfomances down... And you have to deal with the consequences of their failures.

    4) In LOL, you have a lot of strategy and despite what the HOTS fanboys will tell you, LOL actually require a LOT MORE TEAMPLAY. In LoL, the wining team, is the team with the jungler that will assist a lane. The wining team will be the one with the support assisting his carry, the wining team will be the one that will think about buy a ward rather than keeping all the gold for himself. HOTS takes you by the end by sharing XP between the team, but that doesn't mean that it encourages people to be team players. Quiet the opposite actually.

All and all. It's a fun MOBA and well polished. It's free so why not try it out outleast? It's definitly very fun and I will be playing it a lot. However, when it comes to the competitive aspect... I'll definitly stick to LOL and DOTA II.

If anything, it's a good gateway for your friends who don't know how to play MOBA's to get into it.

These things did it for me:
    - Average game lenght of ~20 minutes
    - Comeback is a thing
    - Shared XP amongst the team, no need to worry about it as a support
    - Strategic choices of positioning and frequent action around objectives
    - Cool hero design

    1. Heroes feel weak.... like really weak. You can be level 20 and it still takes awhile just to kill a few creeps. And for the most part the 1 on 1 battles are so slow that its hard to out skill an opponent. need to be AT LEAST 2v1 to kill someone.

    2. The talent system... don't let it fool you... very rarely will you ever use 90% of the choices. Some are just obviously better.

    3. My biggest gripe.... is team dependency. LITERALLY one person can bring your whole team down. You will not be able to carry. If that ONE guy does not come help with objectives you most likely will lose. EVERY streamer I watch that is rank 1 NEVER soloQs... Always have 3+ friends... and that is just bad game design.

    4. Worse matchmaking system I have ever had to pleasure of playing. And honestly I think this is because of what i stated in #3. There is ZERO individual impact/performance... So how can you rate a persons MMR if this game is 100% about teamwork with strangers?

    5. Most expensive cash shop out of League, Dota and Smite. There are maybe 2-3 good skins. Rest are lazy and generic.

Each of the maps has objectives that activate every few mins. This is when team fights usually occur.Between objectives you can kill/bribe map creeps to have them fight for your side or you can push lanes.
The hero roster is kinda small at 37 but that's to be expected. In game currency rewards is a bit on the low side. You get 50ish gold per match and some heroes costs are as high as 10,000 gold. The game does allow you to try out your hero at the shop before your purchase.

Rather than killing minions for gold, you just get a small amount of XP. This discourages players from sitting around farming all game rather than joining in on team fights, which I'm a huge fan of. Rather than buying items, you have an ability tree where you can essentially mix and match hero skills (And active abilities, such as totems that heal your team or drones that repair your structures) to accommodate your team's needs and counter the enemy, this adds a very robust and defining quality to the game.

You're unable to enter ranked match making until you're level 30 with at least 10 heroes, this might sound unreasonable but it's actually a very good thing. In games like Dota 2 the barrier for entry is negligible, and as a result you get players who lack the absolute fundamentals of the game and it's more about which team gets the noobiest players. Admittedly, there will always be landslide losses and landslide victories in any game you play, but most of the games in my experience are pretty much head to head all game long, and the tide can change in a heart beat.

My only complaint is that you really don't earn much gold, EVEN with stim packs (an item that causes you to gain 100% more XP and 150% more gold). I have to take a point off for that, because that is pure grinding no two ways about it. You can easily save up enough for your favorite heroes though, so it isn't a huge deal. It'll definitely bug you though.

All in all, excellent game. I hope it catches on

In Heroes of the Storm you play as one of Blizzard's iconic characters from Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo. At first glance the game looks like a typical 5 vs 5 MOBA, but there are changes that differentiate it from its competitors. The matches are shorter, items have been replaced with talents and all maps have different side objectives. Overall, the changes have made the game more intense and varied. The main thing that I have issues with is the payment model. At first it seems fair and reasonable, but after a while you realize that you have to spend tons of money if you want to unlock all the characters or play the game for a long time. [Sept 2015]
