They addressed many of the genre's legacy issues, promoted team play and removed only the pointless complexity, thereby creating a more accessible game without losing any depth in the process. Easy to learn. Hard to master. It's relatively quick to accumulate gold to get a decent selection of heroes, and there is no advantage to veteran players, other than actual skill, to give them an unfair advantage over new players. For some reason, banning is still a thing, so depending on which hero or heroes are your favourite, if you play in ranked matches, you may rarely get to play your favourites as they may simply get banned.

The gameplay will be very familiar to players of the genre, but the more objective-based map selection ensures you'll be fighting the opposing players a lot more frequently than you may be used to. Possibly the best genre evolution is team-wide shared experience accumulation within a game, allowing support and tank players to also kick ass. Unfortunately the game can suffer from performance issues even on high-end hardware. Perhaps a side effect of having the game based on the StarCraft 2 engine, which may not be optimally tuned for modern hardware. This is probably the only major flaw of the game, but a potentially very detrimental one.

The heroes and villains in the game are drawn from the various Blizzard franchises, primarily Diablo, StarCraft and WarCraft. They have plenty of character and are drawn and animated nicely, usually with meaty sound effects that make it a pleasure to destroy an enemy hero and watch what the physics engine does with them afterwards.

The pricing appears crazy to me. The individual heroes and bundles, have a very reasonable price in in-game currency, while their real money price is prohibitively expensive, even looking at the bundles they have on sale. For the full price of an AAA game, you will only get a handful of the game's heroes and a few skins. It's not really a problem for the player, as you can just buy the heroes you want with gold, but before I would spend real money over simply acquiring gold, they'd probably need to halve the real money costs and increase the gold costs by 50%. But maybe I'm just not the average spender.

    PROs
    - Best designed MOBA out there
    - Great selection of heroes/villains
    - Relatively easy to get in-game money for buying new heroes

    CONs
    - Poor optimization
    - Crazy real money prices
    - Banning system

I have not been a fan of their games in the past because of the game passive strategy gameplay, but this game is a nice hybridization of strategic play of warcraft/starcraft and fast paced, competitive multiplayer action. This is not a game that you want to play solo! It's way more fun with a squad of similarly skilled players. The best part of the game is the insane team fights. The worst part is not being able to leave a quickmatch or an A.I. match, I understand why they did this but completely disagree with it... If you get really into this game the microtransactions will get you, for a free-to-play game you will find yourself spending $60 in no time, but for a AAA game that your going to put 50+ hours into, i'd say it's well worth it. You will like this game if you enjoy competitive online multiplayer with Blizzard IP. Will not like this game if you don't like PVP and if you are super hardcore jaded MOBA player. Expand

Amazing and funny! HOTS is one MOBA very cool, simple and well done.
teamwork is essential for the win and every class has its due importance.
The iconic Blizzard heroes are also present in the game to make it even more attractive

Most well designed, accessible MOBA style game out there.

Wonderful character design, interesting maps with different goals, not as punatively punishing to the players, slightly easier to play, constantly under development. All in all HOTS is an outstanding game that is easy to get into for the casual player and deep enough for the hardcore to really get into. Also it's FREE. No

A game where you can play nearly all of the Blizzard heroes. Is there a better idea for a game than that? I don't think so. However, looks can most definitely be deceiving.

To cut straight to the chase: I love the game play, smoothness, fines, most of the balancing, and overall game design. What I most certainly dislike that prevents me from enjoying and even playing the game is the Hero league *matchmaking* system. Without going into a massive rant, the matchmaking in hero league is very flawed (visit the official HOTS forums and read posts regarding the matchmaking system). This issue was recognized in early Alpha, but never addressed and still present to this day. To add, hero league has been in preseason since the release of the game, which was June 2, 2015.

Another negative aspect is the cost of heroes and how long it takes to gather up gold to purchase one. There are often a type of 'clearance' sale that occurs, but generally the heroes that are not used are the heroes on sale. You get daily quests to do to assist you with accumulating gold, which is nice, but still takes quite some time.

I don't know if this is a new thing or if anyone cares, but the forums is the place where players should be able to interact with the community and with Blizzard. Again, to be short, but this is a crucial topic: there is no reciprocation between developers and players at all (don't take my word for it, visit the forums).

On the positive, there are many maps that rotate and there are plenty of team objectives which makes the game unique and fun. You can purchase new skins and new mounts with gold or real money and they as well go on sales.

My overall score for the game is a 3/10 because I feel that if I were to play the game today, I would be playing a half completed game. Competition is the pinnacle of any game for me and without a balanced hero league matchmaking system I feel that I am only playing half the game. (I feel that its like playing an RTS game in single player against the computer, but your true desire is to get online and play against a person--if that makes sense). Also, the non-existent communication from developers is also disheartening and shows lack of interest with the player base. I feel that these two issues are substantial enough to give this game a negative rating. If these two issues were resolved then I would definitely give the game at least an 8.5/10, maybe even higher.

The gameplay is extremely simplified on 4 skills and only a very few heroes. The matchmaking system is an abomination, the hero selection is uncreative and shallow. The bullet to the neck for this game is the fact that the new heroes that are released every few weeks are always slightly overpowered in the beginning before they get patched. The result of that is that tryhard players instantly buy these heroes with real cash or crazy amounts of ingame money and you have them in EVERY GAME from that time point on until they are patched. The balance within this game overall is bad. The competitive future seems compromised too, even if the company works on it.

To address some criticisms from other writeups, I'll say that I've never felt tempted to spend money in the cash store. I might agree that the prices are outrageous, but by grinding in-game gold, I've bought 24 heroes, leaving 21 that I don't own. I've bought two 'master' skins, which are as expensive as the most expensive heroes, so basically I've gotten to the point of impulsively buying cosmetics. Never have I been tempted to buy anything with cash. There are no pay-to-pown temptations, no pay gates to content. Actually, I think there are some skins that come with some sort of themed abilities, and I don't want anybody to feel misled about that, but to me this looks like an excuse to spend money, for those who want to spend money. If you are a completist who has to own everything in the shop, then maybe that's different. For me, this game is entirely free to play, it's that simple.

Next, how do we compare this to League of Legends and Dota 2? Well, it seems like in this genre all these games have kind of simplified graphics. Maybe they're tuned to play on a larger variety of hardware, and not lag, etc. 'Heroes' is like the others in this respect. And, movement and basic attacks are right-clicks, while hero abilities are triggered by the QWE keys (initially) and left-clicks. So the gameplay is similar as far as the controls. And as far as the idea of two teams of five heroes, facing off across a map, split into a small number of lanes, etc. You know, minion waves march across the lanes, and defensive structures for both teams defend 'their' half of the map. I'm no expert on Lol or Dota 2, though I've played a few games of each. In 'Heroes', it's easy to gain a slight advantage, but it's hard to snowball to an unfair one. Lots of the time, teams are within touching distance, and I think the other games are more known for the phenomenon of one player falling behind and becoming a liability.

Here are some remarks that won't be for those who don't even know what MOBAs are and why they're all the rage: In 'Heroes', each map is dotted with mercenary camps, which are minor aids to your pushing power, capable of pushing through defences if left unchecked. The maps, are themed around their 'objectives', and there is laning on top of those objectives, on top of levelling, and the 'things to do' never stops. I appreciate that there are smaller maps, forcing you to battle intently for big consequences, but the maps are different. A game is just 15 to 20 minutes. I really find that most rounds remain winnable for either team until a very advanced stage. I've seen huge comebacks, I've seen decisive late-game teamfights. I've seen no filler, here.

Maybe MOBAs are a very specific sort of game that you either are into or not. Must you play this, must you experience this? Maybe not. Where I'm at, I reached max level (40) relatively quickly, and there's nothing much else to gain after that other than leveling up individual heroes for the odd gold bonus. There's a competetive ladder, where I've won over 100 games, so I'm movin' on up. Only when you get off of the bottom rungs of that so-called 'Hero League', as I now have, do you find that no all of your teammates are morons. There is an ironclad rule, that if somebody is chatting, they're reminding you that everybody playing the game is a moron. I honestly can see no redeeming value for chat, here, at all. Like it's been removed from Hearthstone, which seems draconian, but again, honestly, etc. Yet I played a few team games (where all five players are queued up as a team) where we used voice chat, and shockingly I had fallen in with chaming wonderful dudes. Even the time that we lost a game! weird. But in Hero League you queue up along or with one other person, and get thrown into a team of five. Again, once you move up, you get among serious players but I've played for several weeks to get to this point. BTW it's fascinating how much variety and depth there is to the game, as I still don't call myself actually *good*, by any stretch! I think that clearly, a lot of complexities from other mobas are ironed out or removed completely. But, learning the heroes and maps is fun and has depth to it. And, it DOES require you to concentrate and put your best effort in to be the kind of player who's an asset to your team instead of a hindrance.

From me, then, this is recommended to anyone who has even considered a MOBA. Is it really a 9? Yes, heck, I didn't toss it a '10'. I'm intimidated at how people have been writing off this game, and I wonder whether winning or losing some online match with 4 random anonymous teammates will hardly matter either way. I think a permanent team of five mates ready to play seems, at this point, like the ideal here, to me. And it's a totally different experience using voice chat -- which might be a totally unfair advantage, too!

Items in this game are replaced with talents for each hero, which makes it easier for the team to balance things and no need to recall to buy.

The heroes have a HUGE variance and you will find a character you like. You can play as Murky with a 3 second respawn or The Lost Vikings where you control 3 characters etc

The team is taking feedback from the community and updating the game regulary.

I recommend at least trying it and getting your own opinion

What I do like is that the matches are fairly short, they load quite quick and you dont have to wait 1:30 minutes to minions to appear like in LoL so you waste less time. Picking champs is also a lot faster, i hate when i wait 10 minutes to start a match in LoL. Also the community is a bit less toxic than in other f2p.
Overall: game is just not fun for a long run. Its free so You can check it for Yourself, but be warned, You can pick waaaay better f2p games.

The f2p grind is not as long/hard as lol. You do earn a small amount per game as compared to lol or dota, but you earn ridiculous amounts from quests and milestones. I just hit level 40 and i have 14 champs, 2 of which are the most expensive. When I hit max level in lol i only had 5 champs (granted i had expensive taste in that game, and this was during the age of absurdly priced runes). The only way the grind is harder is if you are playing 24/7, because at a certain of binge gaming HotS absolutely does become more grindy, but I'm not even close to having that much time to game. However, the $ prices are higher than LoL for individual items, bundles are huge savings.

Alot of negative reviews focus on team shared exp saying that this brings down because you cant save your team. People saying this are the toxic lol/dota players that start raging at the first sign of a bad team. The underdog system makes it so that one player CAN bring the ENTIRE team back up to a level playing field. Ask any experienced HotS player. It is not uncommon that you are behind by 3 levels at minute 10, but back on a level playing field by minute 15-17. This is essentially unheard of in LoL. I cant begin to explain how many LoL games I've played where a carry lost early and never had a chance to recoup and we go on without significant AD damage, or a jungler made mistakes, lost some camps, and now can't gank or tank for the next 15 minutes while the team lays helpless against a snowballing jungler. The shared exp in HotS is actually what allows a single person to bring back the ENTIRE team, and its not that rare.

I understand alot of the apprehension of no items. But when we sit and look at LoL, how often do we see AD carries with identical builds? Ap carries? Tanks? Junglers? How many ADs build serker greaves, blood thirster, phantom dancer, infinity edge? Is there really that much diversity in other mobas when each role really just uses all the same items. I actually see comments laughing at HotS for only giving players 6 choices for their build. How is not easily comparable to items? Most games in other Mobas dont even make it to full builds. Granted, it took me until about lvl 20 in HotS to truly get over not having items, but talents are much more unique to each hero than items ever were. And there is actually diversity in your choices than every X champ having to follow the same build. And these aren't minor choices, they are choices that change your abilities. In LoL, you may have your serker greavers, blood thirster and infinity edge, but how are these items actually changing you? They are making you stronger and more of a threat but thats it, its not a diverse build, you really arent any different just stronger. Talent choices in HotS are choices that add stuns, increase slow, increase cast range, lower CD based on enemies hit, etc etc etc. These choices fundamentally change your champ.

There are negative comments saying it is slow and repetitive... Now this is very odd because I dont know at all see how you can think that this game is slow and I especially cant imagine how it's repetitive. Now, I did enjoy the laning phase of LoL, especially for mid, and HotS essentially removes the laning phase. This may be considered a negative, but it makes the game FAST. Brawls and ganks are happening immediately, team fights start at minute 2 on some maps. 4v4 fights happen on some maps to contest vision even before minion waves start clashing. You start with 3 abilities. This game is FAST game. And it is certainly not repetitive. How can LoL and Dota players say that? I come from LoL, where in draft I know where I'll be finding each enemy champ before the match even starts. I know what builds to expect. I know at what minute it's best for their jungler to come bot and get me. Ever read a jungling guide for LoL? How is that not repetitive but HotS is? Except for specialists, you usually dont know what lane anyone is going to. You can play only one champ and you will be in different lanes each game. On top of that, you wont be stuck in a lane for most the game, you'll be brawling. And of course, HotS has map diversity. So not only are you changing lanes and moving around and not following a preset minute by minute guide, you are reading the new map, the new situation, the new comps. Oh crap, we are pushing top lane and the sky temple showed up bot and they have mercs pushing mid at minute 20, we are now in a dire situation that doesnt show up on a guide because this game is way more fluid than any other moba out there.

This game is very different from other MOBA's, it's easy to be apprehensive about it. I primarily come from LoL and I'm not going back anytime soon just to spend 3 hours to only complete 3 games where my teammates yell at each other the whole time

Servers are unstable and you are guaranteed to have lagging/disconnecting people in most of games, sometimes whole team gets dropped, sometimes you get strange freezes and you have to quit the game and rejoin.

Devs pretend they know about the issues and are working on it, but the only stuff we get are some skins and reskinned horse for 10€.

    TL;DR
You will enjoy the game if you're new to MOBA and like Blizzard games in general, but once you learn the game basics and get better you will realize how uncompetitive and unfinished this game is.
    Also prices are too high.

The heroes have one predetermined role and have to stick with it, there is no items to buff them or anything, the maps have secondary objectives to fulfill, the heroes are not very numerous and the balance is very bad, but the worst about this game is this very silly automatic matchmaking system that tends to make the most random team compositions and will make you wait 3 mminutes to then send you into 20+ minutes of unbalanced garbage, and that's a fun killer.
After a few hours, the fun's not there anymore and HotS for me is a nope. Blizzard should make new franchises instead of trying to ride that MOBA wave and doing it wrong.

Besides that, the game isnt that great. The game never looks awesome but i cant run it properly on my(older) PC while other, better looking games run just fine. This is a weird and sometimes the game is so demanding that is laggs like hell.

I encountered many bugs along the way too.20 minutes prior to the review im writing right now i had a game with the AI.The AI broke completely, never moved.I had to play alone, died 30 times maybe because hey, i was alone against a complete team.I had other issues with bugs, the mostly the AI.

The game is really unbalanced.Sometimes i think blizzard never tested the things they do.No long ago the released Leoric.Kinda broken this is hero, now they made some changes with the latest patch....and hes still a bit overpowered.Youll see him in most pro-lineups for a good reason.Same with one of the newer maps. For example the map with the punishers. They rebalanced some things because if you were behind on that map it was nearly over. The punishers wer too strong. After the patch i never played the map, so i dont know if they succesfully changed it now but again, who tested this ****

In the end i think this is a mediocre game that many people play because they are not good enough for the other mobas.I dont mean that as an offence.Im not made for this genre too but Heroes is simple enough for me so i dont mind. But its kinda shallow i think in many aspects. The community is still very toxic despite the fact that it is very likely that youll play in quickmateched with a team that is not that great because like i said, they are not good enough for the other mobas.I recommend this game to that target audience or when you are total new in the genre.I think you can learn a lot by playing Heroes. But as a product i think its mediocre and a solid 6.

There are no items or any gear, so there is nothing to make your tank, say diablo, better than another diablo. Its all who ever has the better players. I would say being fair I have 1 even game every 25 games.

This isn't exactly what it was hyped up to be (like getting a toy that's much smaller than advertised). My beef though is that I spent 80% of my time in the D/C screen waiting to be reconnected only to appear in the middle of a mob and get killed by a beefed up Diablo; some battles were better than others. I checked my time zone box and tried reducing all of the settings to low and that didn't work at all. I have satellite internet, yet I play WoW, like I said, on high settings with absolutely no D/C and barely any latency so...kind of strange for it to happen in a mini game like this. It tried my patience. Money wasted, although not much ($5). Currently the game is not worth playing, the development plan is too tied up with other Blizzard IPs (i.e new heroes and maps) so devs have ZERO flexibility to deal with feedbacks. Also, the game is not casual friendly, it's more like ''clueless friendly'' , as long as you have a brain, you will greatly suffer from clueless players who play like yolo swags and never try to communicate with others. Since the MM is broken and the player-base is too small, no matter how good you are you will often have to play with those clueless bastards.

This game is pure fun, they streamlined the gameplay and made it what in my opinion MOBA should be, quick action paced tactical brawl, wich doesnt care about your gear but more on your actuall skill and tactics. The heroes are numeral, the gameplay is fun, maps are nice and overall its great game. It has some flaws as connectivity issues, some maps are badly designed. But its really solid game an awesome moba for people who dont like mobas, gameplay mechanics wise 9/10.

But now lets get unto the ugly truth, how blizzard BUTCHERED, let me repeat, butchered this game into state of being unplayable crap. They made perfect game, but they destroyed it. Lets get straight down to the worst deal breaker. Matchmaking....the matchmaking is the WORST I have seen in the history of gaming. Its plain horrible, if you want fun balanced game....no you WONT find it here every single game, is either you steamroll enemy or enemy steamrolls you. NOTHING BETWEEN, scores like 30-0 kills is normal....its just utterlly pathetic and there is no excuse. I dont even know how they managed it, its even impossible to make such matchmaking, it destroys any challenge or fun of the game, you either just kill enemy team without any resistance or you get steamrolled, HOW IS THAT FUN????
Than another brilliant idea was implementation of bots, if one member of your team goes AFK, you literally lose because they get replaced by bot that is brain dead, the other team groups up and game over. The bot just gives them free exp, while contributing nothing to your team. I dont even understand who ever tought this would be good idea??? Why not let other person in queue just jump in??? Or give the team some kind of boost??? No, it gets replaced by good for nothing bot, that ruins your chance of winning + awesome connectivity means this happens in 90% of games, im not kidding.
Another big flop is that the controls are flaky, its not intuitive you feel like you are controlling pushing a rock. You cant do precise moves, you cant skirmish, you just cant do any kind of manouvers so it removes any kind of skill in terms of movement. Than heroes are unbalanced, to the point of there are only few choosable heroes, ussually the most COSTLY ONES, must be a coincidence...*cough* cash cow *cough* on paper it looks lovely, so many combinations and unique heroes and gamestyles....haha no, there is only one gamestyle, choose overpowered ones and win, but op hero of today may be weak hero of tommorow if the price goes down. Community wont boycoot this because they would be fools cause they spend hard cash buying those op heroes...who would want balanced game when they paid to win right?
I thought there is skill involved, but no....actually this game favors those who are less skilled in fact this game has to be the most luck base multiplayer game I have ever seen.
Lets not forget the most intelligent decision, to not be able to choose heroes right before match like in other moba games. You choose hero and go into queue. The awesome matchmaking system now pits you with totally random heroes, wich is 50/50, if your team is imbalanced, you cant change your hero to suit team when game loads or at the beggining of match....no its game over, you are doomed even before you start game and you cant do squat.
Now unto the grinding. You make 30 gold per match if you win, game lasts 20 min average, heroes cost 2000-10 000 gold. If you will play daily 2 hours you make 180 gold....that means you have to play 11 days to just get one cheapest hero or 22 hours non stop....yes you have daily quests but you get one per day and its only 300 gold per quest...you get rewards for leveling heroes, but with the number of heroes, cost of heroes and rewards are one time only....the grind is unbeliavable + you have to have 10 heroes to get into the league battles!!!! Dont worry heroes cost from 2 dollars to 10 dollars!!!! You can buy skin for 15 dollars!!!! This is outrageous!!! Again you buy only the 10 000 ones cause the cheaper ones in league will get butchered. So pay to win cash cow....
Plus there is absolutely NO ROOM for solo gameplay, you cant just drag your team out of loss, no you can do anything in your power but the game is all about team, if one of your team members suck, game over you lost and you cant do anything to change that. Even the pacing is garbage, anything you do until high levels is usseless, you can push one objective in higher levels and you win...one lucky completion of objective and you win....
To sum it up its unplayable 0/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the first MOBA I actually have over 200 matches played, and I am still playing it a lot. It is not necessarily a casual game, it is accessible to players new to MOBAs ,or veterans for the matter ( Ranked Mode ). It is also very unique since it uses the Talent System, and it has no items. The game is also full of nice little details and easter eggs ( such as heroes talking to eachother before the match actually starts ) .
Also, the heroes are all from the different Blizzard games. And just as it was with Hearthstone, this game is also simple, and simple is something Blizzard does well.

As a MOBA veteran (I played the original DotA Allstars many years ago religiously) I've played nearly every MOBA under the sun up until about 3 years ago. I had to quit playing because a new addition to the family was and is taking up a-lot of my spare time so I could only play a game here and there.

The problem with that is in DotA 2 and LoL the games are long and very skill intensive.

I had to quit playing because a new addition to the family was and is taking up a-lot of my spare time so I could only play a game here and there.

The problem with that is in DotA 2 and LoL the games are long and very skill intensive. If you want to play seriously at all you need to keep up with the incredibly un-fun last hitting and denying. So I just stopped knowing that I would always be out of practice and I would also be constantly bashed by the trash communities in both games.

Fast forward to about 5 months ago, I discovered Heroes of the Storm was ready to play in my Bnet client. I wasn't excited or anything because I already knew I didn't have much time to game but my curiosity got the best of me and I checked it out. I am REALLY glad I did.

First off, this is definitely a more casual game. Games are much shorter and the gameplay is all about team fights, jungle baddies and objectives. Instead of the painfully boring slow starts consisting of denying and last hitting present in other MOBA'S, you jump right in to the action and HotS does MOBA action better than all the rest.

This is where skill comes in. Team fights and objectives present great targets for strategy and skill. A team working together will always beat a team that does not and Blizzard made working together SO very easy with it's auto-ping system. You don't need to chat, just ping something on the map and your team knows what you mean and what to do. It's genius! I found myself immediately having a blast the very first game I played. No-one bashed me for being new and 2 of my teamates even helped me out with advice in-game. Your team shares XP so everything you kill, every objective you complete contributes to your teams overall level. As you level, you unlock talents. Talents present the diversity in builds in HotS instead of items. This is also a great change that removes a-lot of the busywork present in other MOBA's. I quickly made 3 builds for Sonya, one focused on siege damage and laning, one on killing enemy heroes and one on tanking, all 3 worked great and played very differently! I didn't have to look up item builds, or farm for gold to get it done.. I just had to fight and do objectives and help my team!

I've finally found a MOBA I can play with my time constraints. And it happens to be the very best one I have ever played. Blizzard has surprised and delighted me with this game. Totally worth playing!

    - best action packed gameplay of any MOBA
    - focuses on fun and teamwork over last hitting and denying
    - Objectives are unique and effective for each of the 8 maps
    - Quick games!
    - did I say it's fun yet? cuz it really is.
    - Talents allow very versatile Hero builds.
    - In-game gold earning is pretty quick
    - Community is actually not full of a$$holes!

The game is awful. Spells and abilities are great disappointment of the whole game. Players don't need great skill to land most of spells the heroes have. There is no high risk - high reward system - you can faceroll enemies without significant impact. Interaction between you and your enemy is so close even you play as Nova (that girl with sniper rifle). There is no spell such as Mirana's arrow or Pudge's hook that can change the outcome of fight. Therefore players don't need to play cautiously because nobody can stun or drag up and quickly kill from nowhere. Another example comes from LoL: there are such skill-required spells like Ashe's and Jinx's ults that can quickly kill an enemy if landed properly (Nidalee's spear too). HotS doesn't have this at all. It's all about lazy fighting and doing things to complete objectives of current map.

Significance of individual skill is nothing. The game is too teamplay oriented as mentioned before. No high risk - high reward. Most of spells are identical, crappy, lazy and easy to use. I give one point just because of familiar characters i have seen in WoW and Diablo.

Another cash cow for Kotick. Another disappointing game from once great company. Wasted.

In an era where MOBAs reign and multiply, it's the originality of one game that allows them to succeed. For the most part of course: we saw experiments like SMNC, Dawngate, and maybe Smite but they end up either failing, being cancelled or just feel too different to be fun. HoTS however feels different on some regards.

I will admit upfront: I was not expecting any good from this game

For the most part of course: we saw experiments like SMNC, Dawngate, and maybe Smite but they end up either failing, being cancelled or just feel too different to be fun. HoTS however feels different on some regards.

I will admit upfront: I was not expecting any good from this game and I simply thought that this was going to be another LoL or DOTA2 clone with no innovation whatsoever. But in the end I was partially wrong, and I'm glad that the game is actually tons of fun!

Instead of talking of what the game is about, I want to focus on what makes HotS different:

-There are no items. Hence, there's no gold. Hence there's no last hitting. Everyone takes experience points at the same time and you don't get to be shouted if you're a support in need of money: you can attack and get yourself already into the battle from level 1.

There are no levels. To be precise, the levels are shared between all of your team mates but it doesn't mean you can slack off: each player gives exp from their creep farming and hero killing, but there's no fear of being left behind anyway: if your exp rate is low you just go and farm creeps.

There is no jungling. Again, to be precise you can find creeps in the jungle but they have another role, and that's to push the lane. While giving exp, they also turn into stronger creeps that will push the lane and help you out, especially boss types.

No skill levelling. Your skill levels up with your level and you start with all 3 at once from level 1, while you have to choose your ultimate at level 10 (instead of 6). Instead of skills however you have talents and if you've played WoW for the past 2-3 years you'd understand what it is. If not, it simply means that your character gets unique perks on their skills of their choosing, greatly modifying their skills' functions.

The best example I can give is the new hero Kharazim: he is a melee support but with the right talents he can turn into quite a good damage dealer. Granted not all heroes have the same luck, but their talents can potentially change how they behave in combat.

There is more than one map. Most of the maps are still the standard 3 lane way, with one being a 2 lane, but the difference here is that you have more than one map and each one of them have unique events that you MUST do in order to win. In Blackheart's bay for example you have to hunt gold coins so that the pirate will use his cannon on the enemy team's buildings, and or in another where you need to collect seeds to build an horror that you can use, and so on. As of now, there are a total of 9 maps and they are always random chose, meaning that your last match might be totally different than the last.

Overall, the main feature of this game is that it's, quite literally, a simplified MOBA that cuts the fat around the most annoying parts (gold farming, exp farming, etc), and simply makes it more about the actual combat rather than being around preparing to combat. Fights don't last more than 20 minutes (I won some in 10 as well), and that means you can have that "one more game" feeling quite a lot.

Still...the game has flaws. Some aren't game breaking, sure, but they're flaws nevertheless.

The game is still relatively new, which means we have a total of only 40 heroes right now: not a lot for a MOBA, especially where in LoL we have more than 100.

The shop's prices are insanely high. Sure, LoL's skins aren't cheap either but usually the heroes in that game aren't costy, but in HotS a hero can cost up to 10 bucks! And some skins? 15 bucks too! Luckily enough you can buy them with daily missions that give you gold, but that'll take you a very long time before you can purchase your favourite hero.

The lack of items, gold, and experience farming might make the game too easy for some and the talents don't always translate into new builds: if you have one build working you might as well stick with that only. Besides, didn't you do the same on LoL? Didn't you always build the same, exact items for most matches?

And for last, the game is mostly based of events in the map and might turn off the purists, since you ARE required to achieve the events' goals in order to win.

But still I cannot deny that I had a lot of fun playing so far and I quite literally don't see a reason to play Dota or LoL anymore: those games are complex, yes, but they don't allow mistakes to happen and rely on a high skill level to play another hero properly. But in this game, you can play any hero you want and have fun right at the beginning without worrying about too much of your skills. Sure, some heroes are harder than others but even the hardest to play can be fun to try.

With that said, I highly recommend to give this game a try. It tries new things and, in my opinion, it succeeds on making a new type of MOBA. Definitely a must try.

Compared to other MOBA games, HotS has a large pool of maps where players can prove themselves on. Each of them has different optional Quests which can help the team to gain advantage, to finally destroy the enemy base. It is indeed something new in this genre filled with more interactive neutral camps, Mounts and more customizable abilities. Furthermore this game is very beginner friendly and so easy to learn, which helps new players to adapt much easier and faster in this game. That means no items where new players get easily confused with, no lasthits which takes a lot of time to master and no gold to prevent overfeeding which happens in others MOBA games pretty often.
Everything in this game is set to motivate players to work as a team. For example there is no individual leveling in this game, every team member share the same level. This is the main strength of HotS, a more emphasized teamplay and even more interactive maps. But the main strength is also the main weakness of this game. An outstanding individual player will never prevail nor ever change the pace of a match since everything is linked through the team level. Moreover this game has no in-game depth whatsoever, it is easy to learn and easy to master. And since there is no lasthits, means that everything lies in stupid autohits and ability spamming just to push lanes. The team who pushes more, gets more experience and the one who grinds more experience wins the game.
Apart from its fancy mash up of the Blizzard universe and some extra bonuses, this game is nothing more than dazzling gamers about some minor features and strip Blizzard fanboys from their money. The final and the most disappointing fact is the endless grinding. Whether it's to buy heroes or to get to the top ladder of ranked Matches. No skills are needed here, just time, luck or an insane amount of money. Blizzard desperately tried to gain its share on the huge MOBA market, but it's nothing more than a game with a limited lifespan. One of many average games.

That said, you get enough money by just playing the game to have all cheap heroes and one expensive when you reach heroleague level. Also the "long" grind helps players to understand the game before going competitive.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. THIS IS A LONG REVIEW, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

To start off let me say that I have a lot of experience playing moba's; over 2000 games on league and several hundred on both dota and Hots. With that being said, I can honestly say Blizzard did not do too bad with this game. I will try to give an honest list of both pros and cons, as well as some moot points, and I'll try to be fair.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Pros
-For the Blizzard lore fans out there, this game includes several of the iconic people throughout most of Blizzard's franchises.
-Gameplay is more accepting of new to the genre players, meaning its a lot easier to get into this game than dota or lol
-So far there has been pretty consistent patching and releases to keep the game from getting too stale
-The game is somewhat fair, I mean unless you are playing against the top echelon of hero league(10 or lower) there is a super defined meta, so that you don't HAVE to play the FotM hero.
-it is ftp so ever if you don''t enjoy the game too much you can see it as nothing ventured
-hero progression in the game is a tad bit more rewarding, in which you can attain different hero colorations (similar to league's chroma packs , compared to the newly added champion mastery in LoL
-gameplay is a little more action packed than the other two mobas, in that action is more constant in heroes, whereas in both dota and LoL the action is a little more explosive
-with minion deaths awarding only exp as well as the absence of items in the game, you are not constricted to farm your lane for some 15-20+ mins until the "mid game"
-game is more objective based, which can allow for some miraculous comebacks, even when severely down in both kills and exp
-there are some innovative gameplay, relating to some specific hero's, namely abathur and the lost vikings (for the dota fans reading this, the lost vikings play out somewhat similar to meepo)
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Cons
-dear god the reconnect systems sucks...very, very, VERY badly
-hero league matchmaking is very imbalanced; the ranks are not separate enough and progression occurs much too quickly to allow for evenly matched game, resulting in most games becoming complete stomps
-regular quick match formation of teams can be a bit rng at times(iv'e had games of 4 assassins and a support against 3 warriors, a specialist, and a support) which results in some very frustrating games
-being that the game is more objective based, the lack of "currency" in the game and shared experience, the ability to solo-carry games is just not there
-(i was very, very disappointed with this) hero master skins are stated as being unlockable by progression, and is a way to show that you truly have played that hero a lot, yet it costs as much as the newer champions(10,000 gold, which is nothing to laugh at) and that can cut back on unlocking new, fun heros
-until you reach level 20, you have to level up a champion simply to use some of its talents and abilities, which is not something a pumped up person wants to do when they just bought their favorite hero
-some maps are just downright frustrating ( haunted mines, i'm looking at you)
-the community is pretty polarized due to the mixing of players from league and dota with the casual blizzard fans, which causes some very hostile games
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now for some moot points, and just some of my opinions.
-This game can be very unwelcoming to hardcore players because the sustained gold income to buy new champions is very inconsistent, basically the quests are nice, just not for people who play 4-5+ games a day
-there needs to be median game mode that is targeted more towards the hardcore community; something that isn't "Ranked" simply for us to pass the time, and it would maybe split up the two communities because lets be honest, getting into the games with new-to-moba players can be a bit frustrating
-tbh some champions do feel a bit stale and clunky, such as -> sonya, lich king, elite tauren chieftain...etc
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall its a decent game. For the casual moba players, as well as new-to-moba players this is definitely a great game for you. For the more hardcore players, this game, imo, is more of a pallet-cleanser; but it has the propensity to be a great game.

The Bad: Most of the heroes kits are very uninspired. Low skill floors, low skill ceilings. There are 3 or 4 VERY unique heroes, and then most who are just so bland and easy. Between thematics and kit, it's been hard for me to find more than a few heroes I enjoy playing. Kills aren't very rewarding, so doing well doesn't feel good. It's a little TOO important to do the objectives. My biggest complaint is shared experience. There is a diminishing return on experience in every game. Each level takes more and more to level. Well in this game, you'll never have easy to kill squishy underfed targets to gain experience off of when you are behind, because instead of one crazy fed character on the enemy team, their whole team will be slightly ahead. This makes comebacks MUCH more difficult than any other moba I've played. The only way to win against a winning team is for them to throw, and not for you to play well. It's frustrating for the carry roles (ranged ADC) to not be able to get a real edge on assassins as well.

There is no customization of characters because there is no gold because there is no farming. When I first started playing Dota and LoL, I hated last hitting. I thought it was the most stupid mechanic in a game. Now that I've played them for years, I see why you need it. To replace the item system, there's a talent system. The talents are boring, add very little to the gameplay, and based on their team, are preset as to what you must get to be effective in your role.

The Ugly: This games graphics are bad. VERY behind in the genre. Between LoL's recent visual upgrade, and Dota 2s stunning effects, Heroes looks like a pixelated WC3 with slightly better models. The default mount is a horse, which EVERY rides. Giant Demons, Jim Raynor (space cowboy) and monstrous creatures of all sorts who look incredibly out of place. They should remove mounts from the game. I'm not really sure what the point of them is. Just give a run when not in combat effect and call it good. Stitches looks retarded up there on his horse.

Overall, it has potential. It could be very big with some changes. The most off-putting things for me though, are gameplay design choices they have, so it really just isn't the game for me. Warcraft 3 is currently the last game of Blizzards that I'm still playing and I hope they can start releasing higher quality games soon. I mistakenly had high hopes. Blizzard didn't let me down, I expected too much.

    By the Categories (Best-Worst):

    Multiplayer Interactivity: (8/10):
Since the game is incredibly easy to understand and low stakes, Friends are easy to invite to the game, and it's quite enjoyable while intoxicated with people that have highly variable video game skill levels.

    Technological Demand (6/10):
This game actually runs pretty poorly and has not been well-optimized. It works well for certain rigs and not for others, and is completely independent of the overall quality of the PC.

    Gameplay (4/10):
Gameplay is highly repetitive with an incredibly low skill cap that makes the game feel quickly unrewarding. Much of the strategy is at the team level, and this isn't a very interesting game to begin with, so solo players will derive very little pleasure from this.

    Graphics (2/10):
This is a straight up ugly game. Blizzard is known for their quality art style and aesthetic. This looks like garbage. The art direction is a mismatch of Blizzard titles with the anti-aliasing turned off. While hero spells may match their aesthetic individually, when all of them are mashed together on screen, it looks horrendous.

    Monetization Scheme (2/10):
As of right now, HoTS has around 35 or so heroes. Most of the new or interesting heroes cost more than $10, or almost 2 weeks of grinding. Free heroes rotate weekly, but since the overall hero pool is very low, the number of free heroes is pitifully small, which leads to a new player experience of highly repetitive games.

Skins cost an obscene amount of money, and hero packs (where one can buy several heroes for a 'reduced' price) are very few and actually not that good of a deal. Those expensive skins, while a luxury, are just plain overpriced. They are simplified hats that don't change hero abilities, idle animations, or anything relevant that provides actual worth for the $20 price tag.

Yes, LoL's scheme is similar, although it has a far larger share of the overall market since it 'got there' first, and offers significant advantages over HoTS: a significantly larger hero pool, a large pro scene, large discussion base, more overall game complexity. This is coming from a person that actually dislikes LoL. The question needs to be asked why publishers think they can offer a game of inferior quality to current games on the market with the same monetization scheme when actual F2P MOBA's of high quality, such as DOTA2, which offers all heroes and content for free, exist.

4/10, and that's mostly because it's great to play with friends that are normally trash at video games.

Blizzard Entertainment seems to be on a trend of making online games that are extremely easy to pick up but lack a lot of the depth and complexity of games in the same genre. Heroes is no exception here as a new MOBA player can jump right in and feel comfortable yet a MOBA veteran might miss the depth of LoL or DotA. I have played Heroes ever since it was in closed beta and saw it grow into a game that I believe has the potential to rival other MOBAs simply because Blizzard is behind it (meaning it is beautifully crafted and well thought out). Also it is awesome to see all the lore from past Blizzard masterpieces all compiled nicely in one universe.

Being a long time League of Legends player, the thing I most missed about Heroes is the lack of items or any rich in game customization system. While this makes it very easy to pick up with choosing different customizations rather than learning ~100 items, it makes the game get pretty dull after playing a few hundred games. I ground out a bunch of games when the ranked system as first released and made it pretty far in a short amount of time because it seems really easy to win games with certain characters or simple strategies.

In all, I would certainly recommend Heroes to friends to try out since it is a helluva lot of fun but I certainly wouldn't play it on a very consistent basis and risk getting bored of the limited customization and repetitive game play.

Score: Solid 7-7.5 (Maybe an 8 or higher for newcomers to MOBAs, seriously give it a try it's free)

This game ditches the items of the other three, and also the leveling system! Instead, you all level up as a team. There are no assists, and if you were nearby a kill and contributed, you get credit for the kill. This may annoy some people, but to me, that is an amazing idea. You can contribute so much to the game and not lag behind. Theres' no pointing fingers at who caused the loss any more. The strategies are different than those in LoL or DOTA2, and if you like those games the way they are, HotS may not be for you.

But if you've been frustrated by mechanics that seem out-of-place, if you're tired of being carried or trying to carry, and tired of 40+ minute matches, HotS could be perfect for you.

Items are gone, replaced by Talents and a variety of well-balanced maps. There's less emphasis on personally ensuring your team's victory and much more on creating synergies within your team and controlling the battleground.

The graphics are gorgeous, though the game still needs performance polishing for team-fights where FPS can dip by 20 or more.

HotS feels like everything MOBAs always should have been. If you've never tried a MOBA, this is definitely the place to start.

For a free(ish) game, HotS has some weight to it. Taking it at face value, you have a MOBA with recognizable Blizzard characters; when I heard of this my hype was at an 11. Unfortunately this falls flat of my expectations.

++ Has a wide roster with some interesting character playstyles. Even without purchasing any characters and only using free rotation, you shouldn't be bored with the selection.
-- That being said, characters are expensive to purchase with in-game currency, and the cost with real money is downright absurd. At a rate of $0.99 per 1,000 gold, with 1/3 of the champions costing 10,000 gold, you're looking at $10 per decent character. So effectively, just a small handful of characters once you've depleted your "early" bonuses (aka playing for an entire day or two straight).
-- Which, unfortunately, is dull after a while. Each map gives you different objectives, but they generally all feel the same. Go here, kill this, go here, your team gets an advantage for a little while. Every map feels very similar.
++ To their credit, however, the maps are pretty. So that's something.
++ And to the character selection's credit (and cost), at the very least they give you the option to test a character before you buy it, in a reasonable single-player practice environment with a single lane, minions, an enemy Arthas, and an ally Malfurion to back you up, as well as control over level and lanes.
-- There is an unfortunate lack of complexity in character leveling, but enough to make one character using the same hero at least *slightly* different from the next.
++ And on the plus side, at least it's easy to unlock the masteries for a given character. 2-3 matches seems to be enough.

There's not a whole lot else to say about the game. It's briefly fun, but gets stale fast--maybe I'm jaded. But I think this is where I have the biggest issue, coming more from a fan of these series than an unbiased gamer. It just doesn't feel like they've been done justice. I get the idea behind making everyone level at the same time, but it doesn't solve the problem of "if one person on your team sucks, your whole team sucks." In fact it makes it worse. With individual leveling, a good carry can compensate a poor player. Now that poor player drags the whole team down.

Not to mention, when I'm doing really well individually, I want it to be known, and I want to tear that battlefield up. When I heard this was going to be a possibility, I imagined strolling in with Kerrigan, rocking a lane, shutting someone down and FORTHESWARM-ing all over the place, cackling maniacally while blasting muh gaming tunes at max volume. Now I'm held back because someone else on my team is feeding but I'm nailing every skillshot? Not a fan of that. In reality the homogenized experience pool makes individual players doing bad even worse.

"Homogenized" is probably the best word I can use to describe it overall. But it's not bad, for what it is. I may pick it up when I'm bored or a neat new hero comes out I wanna look at, but this just doesn't have revive that spark that had me playing LoL for so long. In fact, as someone who hasn't played LoL for a couple years, this game actually made me want to play LoL again.

I started playing during the tail end of the beta. I bought a few heroes with gold, I bought the starter pack, and I had a few special mounts from playing their other games. I saved up all my gold from leveling characters after my purchase of Sylvanas so I had about 30k. To those of you who haven't played, each hero costs approximately 10k gold. Some are less, some are more.

My child decided to buy the piggy bank mount for me for 20k gold. She's 4. Attempted to contact support for a refund or a roll back, they refuse to do so because it was in my own house. It costs them nothing and they lose nothing from undoing the transaction, but apparently -- as with other microtransaction companies -- they've decided to flip people the big bird and refuse to fix anything. Machine Zone does this, most other app companies do this, now Blizzard does this.

It should be noted that there is no real way to block kids from clicking that gold purchase button. They can't use your real money, but it's easy to spend your gold. This is definitely by design juding from 90 minutes of sparring with two "Game Masters". Unless you're childless or keep the little monsters on a short leash, be prepared to fully log out every time you step away from your desk or you're stuck with whatever they do. It doesn't matter if you contact support within 5 minutes of discovery as we did or offer to let them roll your account back over a week. You are boned. They want you to buy that sweet, sweet gold or use money to buy their little heroes and accessories.

If anyone is interested in seeing a copy of our transcript, I'm sure I'll find a way to get it on reddit by the end of the night. It's truly enlightening as to how much Blizzard doesn't give a bleep now that they're on the pay-to-play wagon. No amount of logic can touch that kind of greed.

I started playing the Moba genre since it was a mod of Warcraft 3. I never found any other game in the genre quite as enjoying as the mods of WC3. Dota en LoL were not my kind of games, these games have a too steep learning curve and an unkind community. Heroes of the Storm is the reason I tried the genre again, and it succeeded to keep me interested enough. Yes, there are also flamers, kiddies and plain stupid players present. But those kind of players are in every game. You can easily find new friends ( you get bonus xp and gold if u team up with a friend), and just keep playing with the ones you like.

No items, but the logic is the same: "talents" in HotS function as "items" in LoL/DotA because of the restrictive nature of certain "builds" in LoL/DotA; the system is just more streamlined; you don't need to bother with annoying formulas, and you don't need to look at or buy items that will be useless for your hero; you simply pick which "talent" you'd like, and it improves your hero to your liking. Then IceFrog created the original Dota for WC3, which was the only thing I did in that game. Then finally the craze caught on and developers started creating their own Moba's, with the first being Heroes of Newerth which my friends and I loved. I still rate HoN over Dota 2 and LoL, due to the fact that it was the first after the original Dota and it had the best mechanics, LoL is just a bad version for the masses and noobs and Dota 2's mechanics are just clunky and slow... However I started to tire of the genre, since there was little innovation going around and everyone was just copying IceFrog's original formula. This was until Heroes of the Storm came out. I was immediately excited to see that it had a different take on them and I was skeptical at first due to the itemization being removed.. but boy oh boy, did it streamline the game. The mechanics are perfected from their Diablo 3 game and HoTs has won me over as the reigning KING of MOBA's now. Sure Blizzard is a money making machine now, with their slightly overpriced models, but you can earn everything without paying, you just have to put in the time.. which you will as this game is highly addictive. This is the quintessential Moba now and the others better be scared as Blizzard has created a beautifully fun game with great combat mechanics and fast paced gameplay. 10/10 from me. Expand

This game takes MOBA to a whole new level, but not anything new is actually good. I dont really enjoy seeing an all-star salad with all the characters molted down in an alloy strong enough to survive most of the criticising which come from players happy about the previous blizzard's individual game-worlds.

It's not a DotA copy, for God's sake.
It looks like a moba but it has a lot of differences. First, last hit doesn't matter, what makes a lot funnier to play. There is too little farming and the game forces team fights.
The experience is global to the team, so, as long as one member is near a death, the whole team gets xp, what makes you play more like a team and eliminates the carrier

The experience is global to the team, so, as long as one member is near a death, the whole team gets xp, what makes you play more like a team and eliminates the carrier role and the support that would help the carrier to level, is focused on healing, disabling and crowd controlling.
Every map has objectives that spawns from time to time and helps the teams to get the upper hand, this is when the game almost forces team fights, and helps the matches to be faster (around 12 minutes vs bot, 21 minutes vs players).
The heroes have all theirs skills unlocked (except the the 2 ults, that you have to choose at level 10) from the beginning of the match and at some levels (1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 20) they have to choose a talent, that gives additional effects for the skills or even unlocks more skills. This is the personalization you get for your during matches, there is no item shop, what makes easier to new player to learn how to play.
Although it seen too casual because it's easy to learn, it's not so easy to master.
Most people complains because HotS is too different from DotA. I played DotA 2, League of Legends and Strife, but for me, this is the funniest game of the gender. Do you want to play a game like DotA, play DotA or it's copies. Do you want a different game, try HotS.

Heroes of the Storm is an exceptional game that’s thrown the cat amongst the pigeons in this rigid genre.

In Heroes of the Storm you play as one of Blizzard's iconic characters from Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo. At first glance the game looks like a typical 5 vs 5 MOBA, but there are changes that differentiate it from its competitors. The matches are shorter, items have been replaced with talents and all maps have different side objectives. Overall, the changes have made the game more intense and varied. The main thing that I have issues with is the payment model. At first it seems fair and reasonable, but after a while you realize that you have to spend tons of money if you want to unlock all the characters or play the game for a long time. [Sept 2015]

A welcoming avenue into a visually complex genre, with supreme production values. [Summer 2015, p.74]
