After years of iteration as a minigame and in beta, Gwent has come into its own as a great card game. It emphasizes keen decision-making over chance, and a great back-and-forth buildup ratchets up the tension across multiple rounds. With a great variety of decks and strategies at its disposal, as well as strong incentives to play match after match, Gwent proves great ideas can come from small beginnings.

Gwent clearly learns from other digital collectible card games that have carved their niche out of the market, but its play style offers up an entirely different type of challenge. It's one that requires some investment, and hard decisions on which Faction you'd like to invest in, but Gwent also respects your time by rewarding you for nearly every action in a match, tempting you to play just one more. Its matches could use some fine-tuning in their pacing and presentation, but Gwent is otherwise a refreshingly new take on card games that establishes itself firmly outside of the simple side activity it was in The Witcher 3.

The price of this intricacy is that Gwent is anything but accessible... It feels both remarkably grown-up, and finely aged by its years of open development. [Jan 2019, p.120]

Gwent’s greatest asset are its basic mechanics – simple, easy to grasp and engaging mentally. Gives the players a lot of agency and even more tactics to discover and choose from. [13/2018, p.60]

Gwent is a nice card game, but its final version is totally different from what everyone expected.

You can get good decks from short easy grinds without paying, unlike most other cardgames out there. Active developers who are constantly improving the game. I love this game, and cdprojektred is currently one of the best game studios in the world, and they put in their usual love and craftsmanship into this game. For me a 5/5. Expand

The in game rewards and progression systems are extremely giving and fair. The card art and animations are beyond compare. And the six different factions have distinct archetypes and identifies which make the game eclectic and fun. I highly recommend it! Expand

Many months later,Last year I joined this game on Beta and easily cranked north of 200 hours in the first two months, I was quite obsessed. Many months later, I put it down for a while and then came back upon release hoping for a return to the same. I liked Thronebreaker, but overall Gwent as released is a huge disappointment.

I'm not sure what CDPR was thinking in conducting a massive overhaul of the game, but it truly is a different game. And I, like other long time Beta fans, I'm not happy with the changes. Gwent is now an inferior game to the Beta version. I could list about twenty reasons why, but I just don't have the energy because I'm sad. They spiked this game, for whatever reason, and it makes me sad.

To me, the Beta version of this game was like a 9 or 10, but I can't rate the released version the same. Maybe CDPR will fix it in the long run, but at this point they must be committed and so I doubt it. Thus I shall remain sad, and quite nostalgic for the glory and excitement I had while playing Beta.

I played a lot beta and really enjoyed it. It was fast paced and interesting. Sadly the Homecoming come in and destroyed everything what I liked about Gwent. This is a disappointment now and I know I am not the only one feeling like that. On top of that I dont understand the business model of developers - after destroying my collection of cards from beta I got enough scraps to have ALL cards in Homecoming and half of the scraps still left (and my beta collection was not full). I think this game will be dead soon as it will not be profitable. Expand

It is good example for every human. You can be punished for nothing. Just for your nationality. Disgusting company. Don't come back to Russia. Never.
