Superb modern take on final fantasy. This world lives, and the characters are original, not like the boring mess that is 16.

So technically the game delivers on it's promises but what about the rest, well, FFXV is a bit experimental and probably one of the most polarizing entries in the franchise, the game has many flaws in it's story that hinders the enjoyment of the game, it is not bad perse it's just i wish all aspects of the game were as polished as it's graphics.

Gameplay it's pretty good and combat feels solid, you have a huge over-world to explore with your party with a bunch of activities and epic boss fights to take on.

The OST is outstanding a huge score that makes the game feel more epic than it actually is.

In general terms this is a worthy FF not close to the likes of FFVI, VII or even X, but not that far either, most of the people who give pretty bad reviews are nostalf*gs that decided to stay in the 90's to me this game is a solid 8.5 on PC and an 8 on consoles.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphically it's amazing, Soundtrack is awesome and I love the characters.

Unfortunately the gameplay to me is where it lacks. It's too basic and most of the RPG elements are dumbed down heavily to what I call a button masher. That's my number one issue with this title. I expected alot more than just basics. It's all equipment stats and basic skill learning. Nothing really in depth. I expected learning heavy spells, learning complex builds, learning more combos and skills, etc. etc.

The story was amazing up until after chapter 7 or 8 when it becomes a hallway and all freedom is gone. It looks like they could've done more with the game especially proven with the unfinished areas. I like it but it definitely could've been something grand.

The quests and the traveling I really love with this game though.
Optimization on this title is about average and can be better.
Voice acting is suberb (Both ENG and JP) and I never got tired of Ignis's British accent. I loved it from beginning to end.

I'm gonna keep this review short though. Long story short they should've left more development time to finish the work that was needed and gave us the unfinished regions. I still think today we should get all that missing stuff from XV as DLC because it's a shame. I would love for them to add new content for the game. Initially 60 dollar title was worth every penny for what it was but I feel like they could've done alot more too.

8 out of 10. A great experience of a game but too basic for fans looking for something more complex and/or faster paced.

I want to care more about its characters, but a lot of stuff isn't put together well. Their character depth is explored in expansions that should be played in certain points in the game but are relegated to the DLC section, making it a jarring and confused experience. There's an Anime, some text scripts and a Movie, but none are bundled with the game. It's a great port, with solid compatibility and scaling. The story is broken and convoluted, but holds emotional weight. The voice acting is like a sine wave, going between serviceable to annoying and repetitive, sometimes even out of touch and inhuman, to fantastic dialogue that really show the depth of each character. The endgame is great, but there's almost no guidance to any of it. The music is amazing, but the car radio is terrible and doesn't feel like part of the world. Every good thing seems flawed with something else that had to be broken in some other way.

Now, this is the PC version I'm reviewing, and I'm sorry to the season pass holders on console who didn't get the royal edition for free. I think they should've. I'm also writing this after PAX. I now know there are 4 more expansions and comrades will be a standalone release soon. I also know about the modding tools and level editor coming this year. until then, my review is not final, and i will update it accordingly when all the content is done and dusted.

Find it difficult to justify a 10 for this game - there are certain quests that should be time reliant, such as the broken down car on the highway, took me 5 in game days to get around to clearing that from my journal and he was still there, waiting by his car. The story is great, I recommend watching Kingsglaive first as it means you start with the knowledge of the story they expect you to have. Otherwise it can be slightly confusing.

Overall this is a very strong game. The combat takes some getting used to, unlike other Final Fantasy games, you're not in direct control of all party members so they don't always do as you'd expect, but over time you'll come to rely on their skills and they will save you from yourself when you charge in against 9 enemies. The soundtrack is sublime, listening to old FF games on the road is amazing. The car should offer more freedom, although it's understandable that they've not allowed GTA style freedom in going offroad. The side activities are fantastic, I've enjoyed Chocobo's and Fishing and Cooking and everything around they've left to do. It genuinely feels like a roadtrip with your mates, some side scenes and conversations that aren't essential just add to the game world.

Overall, brilliant. The second half of the game (where you're on a more linear path) could do with some form of expanding, but overall it's a very, very good game.

What I was disappointed about is how much work went into making sure the environments felt so smoothed out and detailed, that the characters so obviously lack the same detail (except for the hair and clothes). When the camera closes up on their faces... sure, there are pores - as with any other HD/4K game - but beyond that, the eyes look as dead as they do in the PS4 version. Except of course, that because everything else looks so great, the deadness of the eyes is now so much more obvious. This is one of the few things that bothered me, because so many conversations make use of "screen time" and you just want to see characters who feel alive... but nope... they look dead.

Other things regarding the same issue has to do with the reworking they did on their skin... it causes blemishes or lines to look really odd because the textures themselves were not all completely reworked. It's so odd, what SE decided to do with this.

That being said - WONDERFUL game, and an even greater joy to play with these incredible draw distances and detail... the sunlight now actually looks tropical, or desert-like, etc; it's crazy!

Pretty good game, loads to do. Only one bad thing for us old school players... where is the true turn based battle system? I absolutely hate the way Squaresoft has taken the Final Fantasy battle system in their games. I long for the days when it was turn based like with FF VII/VIII/IX & X.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I got this game for free as a part of the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and decided I would give the game a try on my PC... It's REALLY good. This game seems to somehow keep me captivated the entire time I was playing, there wasn't ever a moment when I was playing just for the sake of getting to the next part of the game. This game heavily promoted exploration outside the main story as well with dungeons and 70+ side-quests to do. The dungeons on their own are fun on their own since a majority of them are optional and often times difficult, however the reward for completing them is well worth it, even if you only wish to play the game for the story. Every side-quest is fun and rewarding, and a lot of the time, completely unique as well; as well as enhancing parts of the game you wouldn't mess with otherwise. What I mean is, by doing side-quests related to Cindy you get parts to upgrade the Regalia which are fun customizations such as being able to go off-road and even JUMP with the vehicle, by doing side-quests related to Navyth you get fishing rods, lures, and reels, by doing side-quests from Dino you get equipment that helps over the course of the game such as boosting your stats more than most of the other equipment you find from just looting, and from doing side-quests from Cid you can upgrade weapons you get from other side-quests and from just looting. FFXV also has interesting gameplay elements on the side too like fishing which, as uninteresting as it was to me starting out, grew to be something I genuinely enjoyed as I completed more of the Navyth side-quests and unlocked dishes for Ignis to cook. The Cup Noodle side-quests are hilarious to go through as well because how forced the ad placement is, but nothing I would say needs to be removed since it's merely a side-quest.

On to the main story/gameplay, it's pretty solid for the most part. The pre-rendered cutscenes are a straight 10/10 and the summons part of the game you unlock about a third of the way through are ALWAYS a spectacle to watch, they never grow old. The sound design is also fantastic and there isn't anything I can think of in my time playing FFXV that sounded out of place. I would've rated this game a 10/10 if it wasn't for the ending of the game from a gameplay-only perspective. Everything before Ifrit is great and should stay as is, but everything after just completely pales in comparison to the previous fight. While it's cool that these fights want you to play as the entire cast, (Gladiolus, Prompto, Ignis) it just feels out of place for these mini-bosses and ideally should've been saved for the fight with Ardyn in my opinion. The second of the 3 mini-bosses after Ifrit gave me a lot of issues for whatever reason as well and was the first and only time I died throughout the entire game on Normal difficulty, and was even harder than Ardyn himself, giving the player no time to breathe and when you are given time to breathe you have to literally take a shot in the dark to find her or risk being instantly wiped out with no chance to react when she decides to leave the shadows. The Ardyn fight was anti-climactic as well for something the entire game built up to. You pretty much just have to make a tricast spell with over 300 potency to completely decimate the first phase of the fight. The second phase is even easier, you only have to hold attack and OCCASIONALLY dodge Ardyn's attacks that hardly even hurt if you are hit. The last phase was also a joke literally requiring you to just hold attack and that's it. The actual ending to the story was great though and I have no problems with it.

TL;DR game has fun side-quests to do, promotes open world exploration, a good story and visuals, but a lacking ending fight.

The sacrifice that Noctis undertakes is so moving. Video games have come a long way in story telling. To be honest, the game isn't as bad as people say: the story could be better yet is not awful, the brotherhood relation is really heartwarming with good dialogues, interactions (during free-roam and battles) and I'm not gonna lie, I really appreciated the road trips with excellent music which were always peaceful (and that's also problematic because we should sense the intensity of the war but no one give a damn about that), the OST is a masterpiece (of course) and the combat had a good concept but failed (FF16 coming to save the day yay!). At that point, every good writers and good game designers can do this, but not everyone can recreate the complex politic specific of the FF franchise and the super rich lore, but this is way to hard to understand for new comers, that's what FF15 wanted to do and that's the main reason the game failed: keeping a little bit of crystals, a little bit of lore and a little bit of politic. But by doing that, the game isn't as deep and complex as other Final Fantasy (just like in FF12 where every story detail is precious and important and you can find them in every corner of the game and you could actually feel the presence of the Imperial army in Dalmasca by watching how people live, how they're treated...) and FFXV become just... a cool fantasy game, that's all. After all, the urban fantasy subtheme is far to be a bad concept (FF7 is a urban fantasy right) and that's why FF13's hate is negociable. But some people struggle to understand that and feel like medieval fantasy is the only right option for FFs but we've seen that Final Fantasy Versus XIII could become a true masterpiece. To be honest, I would rather not give a rating since it can be loved by newcomers and hated by veterans so I give an 8 but just as a fantasy game not a true FF. Still, this is not a definitive lose for SE and I know they will come back in full force with Final Fantasy 16! Yoshi P is back with the biggest bosses of the FF franchise just like he did with FF14! Never forget, Final Fantasy is the real Pheonix!

As a videogame, it's a big mess, I honestly didn't enjoy the Open World aspect, while the world looks gorgeous, there's not enough quality content in it, the driving mechanics are questionable, the gameplay is easy with very simple mechanics, and the side quests are generic, but the very charming cast of characters kept me intrigued.

The story starts nice but gets uninteresting after the first hour, it feels like the story is absent for a big part of the game but fortunately it picks up later on, and that's a shame because it's a such a beautiful story, just very poorly written.

There's a certain point halfway through the story where the game becomes linear and focuses on the narrative, and I really liked that because the Open World just doesn't work very well. There's a lot of action and some challenging boss fights in the second half of the game, and all that leads to the final chapter, which is one of the best sequences I've ever played, and the ending is one the BEST things I've ever experienced!

The soundtrack is phenomenal as expected, one of my favorite soundtracks ever, it really compliments the game and its key moments.

Overall Final Fantasy XV is such a terrible videogame but surprisingly enough an exceptional one as well, there are so many flaws while at the same time it manages to surpass the player's expectations in such a unique way, and that is exactly what makes it so good for me. I love this game, It's a very interesting and rewarding experience despite its very obvious flaws.

    Final Rating: "Great" ~ 8/10.

I like this game so much that I want to give it a higher score than this. Unfortunately, the game is held back by bad decisions made by Square-Enix, like cutting content to put it under a paywall. Even if you have all the DLC's, the experience feels fragmented. Flaws aside, the gameplay is really good (but not the QTE's and magic grenades), and the story is awesome and very emotional.

The game is a technical marvel imo, the light effects, the animations, the weather, the impressive summons... Everything looks amazing and seems really nice ported to me, although I didn’t play the original in console. I’m sure it’s not flawless, but I don’t think you will complain of this aspect.

Setting: the world is as big and beautiful as it is wasted and lifeless. This is not a map worth exploring and most of what you see is simply a decorative element oriented to make your car travels more pleasant. Yes, there are some dungeons here and there, and yes, there are some boss-like monsters to kill, but even with those, the whole thing was just not worth the time for me. My advice: just focus on the main story and if you happen to stumble with one of those funny elements in your way, by all means enjoy. The side quests are no better and seem to be taken from a mmorpg (go here and kill these bugs or collect these objects), lacking any narrative to them, and so I had to pretend they didn’t exist and totaly ignored them from chapter 3 onwards, really. To compensate (a little bit) for this lackluster boring world, the enligsh dubbing was really good and the FF-style music didn’t disappoint.

Gameplay: likely the best about the game is its combat system which never gets boring and slowly grows more technical and flashy, just at the right peace, if only I’ve always felt everything was a little too easy, despite playing in the maximum difficulty. Sadly, the combat is the only outstanding element of the whole (game)play. Once you finish a battle, things get boring pretty fast and they can be summarized in auto-driving the car, often going over and over to places you have already been, with nothing to do in between this drives, in a world that is so full of barriers (both invisible and physical) that makes you wonder if you can really call it “open world” to begin with.

Story: now, if the world is not well thought out, the story is even less, which you can imagine is quite a disappointment, knowing that the Final Fantasy franchise is known for its amazing narratives. How to explain. The adventure looks good in the surface and promising at the start (yes, so did the map) and there are some flashy moments here and there that caught my attention, but once you step back a little and ponder, you realize the whole thing is just too shallow (again, like the world), the storyline never gets to take off and honestly, it barely holds together, constantly resorting to far-fetched plot devices to move itself forward, often initiating or ending events without explanation (or with really unconvincing ones) instead of coherently chaining them with elegance just as a Final Fantasy should. Regarding the characters, including the protagonist and his friends, it is sufficient to say that they are surrounded by such an air of frivolousness that it made me difficult, almost impossible, to connect with them emotionally, despite the tons and tons of camera time they get. Things get more climatic in the very last chapter, but one chapter alone can not make up for 40 hours of inconsistencies.

So, how good it is? Well, as a game: an ok experience. As a Final Fantasy? Certainly lackluster. 7.5/10

There was still some threads left unfinished, which I hope one day they can come back and revisit as a remake, in similar fashion to FF7-Remake.

The rpg action was decent, almost on the level of kingdom hearts.

The story was even more fascinating, despite how depressing it was, but it went somewhat unfinished because it was suppose to have multiple endings.

The gameplay is fun but lacks depth and polish, with it often feeling like an underwhelming hack and slash game, however it is still fun and often very satisfying. The story is interesting but in my opinion fails to deliver due to it being separated into different forms of media including the game, movie and anime and it also suffers from one dimensional characters.

The world is also quite one dimensional, with little to discover and countless invisible walls throughout the 'open world' that can be quite annoying at times.

Overall, I wanted this game to be so much more. Its fine the way it is, but its simply unfinished and had the potential to be so much greater.

The gameplay is basically the same with slightly improved graphics and a fluid 60+ fps or higher. But other than that, you can beat most encounters by just holding down the attack button (it's very entertaining to do this in front of friends or family, by beating encounters with one hand on a controller, lol). The game as a whole is great. But like I said earlier, if you've played and finished this all on a console before, there's really no reason to get this again. The game was already pretty to look at via a PS4. On a PC, that "wow factor" due to those 'ultra' graphics settings wear off real quickly. Expand

It could have been so great. I really enjoy the main story, but the main story really is so short, the sidequests could have added to the whole. The side quests are mind numbing fetch/kill quests. The combat was really fun but that levelling thing sort messes with that as well. Had they just put in the time to fill out the world they made it could have been a masterpiece. I mean they could have at least done NPC quests to give flavor to each one, i know there are DLC of them but that is after the main story. After I was done I didnt want to do the DLC or even go back, you will understand if you play. IF you are really into it, do EVERY sidequest before chapter 9, story wise it makes more sense. It could have been a true masterpiece had they just crafted the game that was already there, its sad really, a waste of such potential. The music really gets you into it and sticks with you, the car cruises, if it was heading toward masterful quests which built the world up well that would have been absolutely brilliant. The combat system is pretty good although again the camera shines for doing whatever it wants.
The music is never out of place and has silly little details like food, sleeping and the main characters' hobbies, which has its charm.
I can't say it's a guaranteed purchase, but I had a pretty good time, despite having cancelled content and a bit of DLC abuse.
At least it delivers on its introductory message, and even though it doesn't claim its throne in the JRPG world, it's not a bad game in the genre and a step forward for Square Enix, which had become somewhat stagnant after FF XIII.

Soundtrack is also very good, although not exceptionally good.

WHAT'S BAD: The Story is really poorly written! Characters are empty with no development whatsoever. BIG chunks of the story are not told in the game, requiring you to go watch the anime, the movie or buy DLCs just to understand what's happening. Also combat just stops working whenever you are fighting one of the main story bosses, it feels clunky and not grand at all, plus camerawork is almost unbearable in those battles and all the previous gameplay goes to trash as you get thrown into a new kind of gameplay entirely, with very different mechanics and move-sets. Finally, the camera is often a burden, especially if you are playing with a controller.

In short, for a story-driven RPG game with the Final Fantasy name, the story is very poor, and the characters are not laid out nor do they get any development. Nonetheless, the gameplay experience is very good throughout 90% of the game and the world exploration mechanics and sidequests makes for a very fun and entertaining game to play! There are a lot of things to do, secret places, enemies and weapons to get that you might easily miss the first time around, giving you some replay value. Just don't buy this game for it's story, it's not good story.

the game overall is pretty ok BUT... the endgame of it is so terrble and boring... pls just why square.. WHY ??

first 25% of it are like a 7-8 out of ten
next 40% more like 8-9 out of ten ... really awesome open world feeling
and last like 20-30% are so boring, lame and stupid.. it just makes no fun and sense at all 2-3 out of ten at most

Noctis' relationship with his friends is enjoyable, but sometimes it gets a little repetitive, the same lines of dialogues etc. Nevertheless, the game has its ups and downs. It takes time to really begin. The exploration at the beginning is ok, but after awhile, it gets dull and extremely boring. You don't have much to do in the world. The side quests are AWFUL (as in almost every Final Fantasy), I don't want to move in circles searching for yellow frogs, it's ridiculous. The driving is awful as well, very boring, at least you have fast travel. The main story is not so good, but the final battle and the end of the game are awesome, it helped to increase my score on this game. However, some segments in the main story are dull, very linear without a lot things to do (linearity is not bad, if made it right is good), but in this game isn't good. What saved this game was the willing to see the end and the battle mechanics (with an awesome soundtrack). Unfortunately, I forced to finish this game because I really wanted to see the end, the side quests and the car segments are very boring and I almost stopped playing. The game is not a masterpiece, it has its flaws, but playable. Expand

Less detail.
The combat system is a lot of spam action, the strategy of the old turn-based system is mostly gone.
In short, this is an overall solid game but it's missing the magic, uniqueness and emotional involvement that I haven't felt now since FFX.

If you master the character at lvl 1 you can expect pretty much more of the same as you progress (there is some progression but not enough variety).

Other things I really don't like: only 4 characters (all emo looking douchebags IMO) and absolutely no hard mode. I'm not sure why any RPG or action game would ship out without some sort of difficulty mode besides normal and easy when the systems in place are so simplistic. Pretty much warp around to win. Why should I have to fight monsters 30+ levels higher than me in order to have any sort of challenge? Why isn't there more varied attacks like allowing my button mashing to be more dynamic and interactive? Why is it that I just hold the attack button? Where's the motivation to get stronger if everything is easy?

*Please note that I don't buy games for their story, combat is more important to me as that's where I'll be spending 90% of my time. As far as I'm concerned, the combat here is less deep than Bouncer (Square's beat'm up from 2000). Sure, FFXV looks pretty but I don't give a **** about graphics if the complexity of an RPG isn't there. The sad thing is that I think it's not even complex enough as an action game, at least in good action games you usually learn more moves as you progress and the fights become more strategic and complex as you go.

Although it might sounds good on paper to many, I am disappointed by this massive production. The open world is not open enough, the UI is heavy and the navigation between places is cumbersome. I don't want to spoil the game but the map is not even fully explorable. It's missing cities and life. It feels unfinished. So much potential. The action part of the game is an attempt at making the game more accessible, versus the previous combat systems which were turn based. But the new combat system is very, very technical, very, very difficult to master, resulting in more frustration than fun. From time to time, you score great combos, but very often you scratch your head to make it happen. Most of players seem to fight with basic actions only and gave up or never cared about more advanced combos as it's not easily accessible. FF15 is a difficult game and the easy mode is there to appeal to most of the player (easy mode means you resuscitate right away when you die).

On the other hand, the story is nice, the characters are lovely, the art work and direction are pure gold, typical Japanese fashion, with kings, emperors, soldiers, sons, daughters, villains, mega corps, technologies, travel, love, … The graphics and the soundtracks are gorgeous. I would hope Square would have developed more the universe of FF15, would have invested more time. By the way the movie Kingsglaive based on FF15's universe is really worth it.

I consider FF15 is good beta game. A game that is 75% complete. Square even gave up on the initial promise of multiple DLCs. If it suits your personality, you might like it for the world, you might like it for the combat system, you might like it for the story and immersion. But you rarely like it for the 3 altogether.

Still I will keep this game in mind and hope for a proper remake at some point in the future because I really appreciate its great ambitions that were unfortunately left unfulfilled to a degree that made this title a bad experience to actually play. I think a proper remake of this game could actually be a great FF game with a mature tone.

I could only really enjoy the music - everything else (story, characters, gameplay) had (too) high ambitions but ultimately lacks "soul" and depht and on top there are huge optimization problems with this game.

There was a lot of potential in the story but the first 2/3 of the game feels cheesy like it was aimed at a very young audience who might prefer blunt storytelling and plain characters.
Also I hate the K-Pop aesthetics which made the main characters look extremely unappealing and unrelatable to me.

Ultimately what killed this game for me was the bad optimization/port and that they filled the game with useless/boring quests, mechanics and an open world that didn't add anything fun or interesting to the game instead of focusing on a set of core principles that could actually carry the game to be excellent (story, pacing, gameplay, optimization etc).

What baffles me is why this game would receive so much praise, when it's gameplay, pacing, character interaction etc still needs so much work and the first 2/3 of the game are just very annoying. From what I could gather from the reviewers I noticed there seems to be a kind of group of accounts that keep pushing very high user reviews to the top of this list and downvotes low score reviews (for whatever reason that is beyond me). Also I can see some reviewers being emotionally captured by the ending/final parts of the game that apparently inspired some strong emotions in some people and I can respect that.
However I feel like it's not enough to judge a game by its ending. This is not a movie. You play this game for a very long time some might hit a triple digit of hours played) and for me it's quite relevant, wether this time is spent in an enjoyable way and FF XV is not delivering on that front.
What it does have is a nice antagonist and a really interesting storyline underneath a very rough skin. But I dont think this is nearly enough to give a game a 9 or a 10. I strongly recommend to look at the FF VII remake instead, if you want a properly crafted, current gen FF experience, that actually makes sense to play. When playing FF XV I kept getting the strong impression that random popular stuff was just meshed together (generic quests, empty open world, stealth etc) and it lacked direction and purpose because there was no proper focus on what should be a defining strength of this game.
I think a Final Fantasy game should bring a good focus on story and characters and I feel like most of the game this didn't work out.

Yet one could argue its the best combat in any FF game, and they wouldnt be wrong, anything is better than the old lazy turn based trash.
Its extremely linear and at first uses a self driving car to bore you to death, 2/3 into the main story its replaced by a train which is literally the same thing dropping the half assed pretense of being "open world". They really went to some pathetic lengths to try to make the game longer artificially but its pretty short anyways, like 10 to 15 hours if you dont bother with the errand boy side quests.
The story has a lot of logic flaws, its not better than IX, VII and even X, the villain is uninteresting and the best he does is pull a move already done in the franchise. The brotherhood stuff and emotional manipulation they aimed for could have worked if the game was actually good, open world and felt like a journey which it doesnt in the least.
The music is great, some custcenes are beautiful, the characters are all wasted on a bad game, these are the reasons my score isnt even lower.

This is an interesting example for a completely overdesigned game. You will find nothing but love poured into the smallest details, but the overarching narrative and gameplay concepts are so convoluted, bloated and disconnected that the result often seems like an elaborate joke.

Controlling the game, especially it's menus and map, is riddled with useless extra steps and needless prompts, animated sequences and transitions. Travelling, moving around and exploring is barred by invisible borders, infuriating level design, stupid collision detection and random spawns.

For several reasons you'll wish you would have taken the bus to your wedding. The godforsaken car will cost you more playtime than the main questline, and not just because half of the missions seem to deal with that stupid vehicle in one way or another. It runs on rails, stops whenever an enemy is approaching and throws you out, and you can't use it at night without getting the same unskippable warning from your manservant that riding the car at night is bad.

This is only one of a thousand ways that your little team is going to annoy you, not because their little quirks aren't funny or cute or heartwarming, but because it all repeats over and over again. At the same time they often fail at basic pathfinding, stand around gawking during combat, talk about things that haven't yet happened or aren't happening anymore and therefore often seem oblivious and whiny. What should breathe life into your long travels, and is certainly needed (going from place A to place B will take up 90 % of your time) adds to the now infamous weirdness, but it's far less charming than people told me it would be.

They are one of the many reasons why combat also is mainly an exercise in patience. It's yet another system that is riddled with several features and control schemes that are just getting into each other's way, and I have yet to fight a single battle where simple button mashing wasn't faster and easier (while manifesting in the same incomprehensible scores).

The narrative however takes the cake. It has no structure, no pacing, no buildups, manages to be overly long and full of holes at the same time and seems to be hellbend on keeping the player in the dark at any time. It manages to introduce new characters and lore out of nowwhere and doesn't care about the contradictions and logical fallacies that kill the whole thing roughly 20 minutes in when your prince and his entourage fail to aquire the necessary funds to repair their car - in a world with phones, with the heir to the throne in their mids. The introduced story elements seem random and oftentimes agressivly out of place just to be forgotten or reinvented only minutes later.

It certainly didn't help to cut huge chunks of said narrative out the game to put them into a (terrible) movie and resell them as DLC. For some reason this has not only been widely accepted by the fanbase of this franchise, but is even used as an excuse for the shortcomings.

So if this is your first experience with that franchise, you might wanna drink some of that cool aid first. If you don't, you'll be left just as confused, annoyed and irritated as I was most of the time. After finishing this mess I think that maybe just making a game about a road trip of four friends to a wedding was the idea the developers actually liked, and deep down they did not want to make a fantasy rpg - because everything outside of that concept feels glued on, is full of tired tropes and oftentimes undercooked. And I think I would have liked that game better as well, as boring as it sounds.

    I couldn't finish this game.

After falling in love with FF7, I imagine this one at least would be cool, but I was wrong. Firstly, even with a good premise, the story just doesn't get you. If the gameplay was good, I'd beat it, but it's not. I had to play it on my keyboard because the game doesn't recognize the DualSense or Xbox Controller - And even if it recognizes, it is not smooth at all. Block, attack, run, and use "powers" feels so strange and the combo with your companions feels gimmick. Another thing that got me pissed was the car. You use it many times and it is boring asf. Either driving or not. All of it is bad. There is no even point to detail it. The open world isn't inviting also.

Anyway, I hope the other FFs are better like FF7.

The main plot of Final Fantasy XV can be completed in under 20 hours, but with all of its sidequest content, including the end-game dungeons, the game stretches out to as much as 140 hours in length. For reference, if you were to do nothing but play this game, 24 hours a day, it would take you about six days to complete all of that content; if you were to play it for 3 hours an evening, it would take you a month and a half to complete. And yet, the main plot could be comfortably completed within a single weekend, and possibly within a single day, were you truly determined to beat it.

It is a truism that in most open-world games, the core plot of the game is its strongest point, and the side content is largely repetitive nonsense.

Final Fantasy XV differs from most games; the open-world content is actually the game’s strongest point.

But this is not a good thing, as its open-world content is still deeply flawed; it is simply that the main plot is a disaster.

This is a game that was stitched together from parts, and it shows. Fans were eager for Final Fantasy XIII Versus, and when it turned into Final Fantasy XV, they were still eager – even a decade after its initial tease.

But the fact that the game took a decade to create really shows just how large its problems were; indeed, the game we played nearly all dates from after 2012, but it tried to preserve many aspects of Final Fantasy XIII Versus.

It shouldn’t have tried, as the parts which were the holdover from the original version of the game are the worst parts, and don’t fit well with the rest of it.

There's only one way in which the game realy shines - the core gameplay loop, of camping, cooking food, going out and doing content while driving around in your car to get from destination to destination, then calling it a night, cashing in your experience to level up, and looking over the photographs of the day really works well. It creates a sense of a journey, of a road trip, and it works great.

The main cast of characters - Noctis, Gladio, Prompto, and Ignis - work really well together, and feel like genuine comrades.

But the rest of the game is a total mess. The main plot is badly paced, emotionally incoherent, introduces characters who never get any sort of proper payoff, and feels totally disconnected from the open world gameplay, where no one really seems to care about who Prince Noctis is. You don't really build an emotional connection with Lunafreya, Noctis's primary love interest, or his homeland of Insomnia, nor his father, who barely shows up at all, despite all of these things being supposed to impact the player heavily emotionally.

The combat is terrible - the warp strike ability is crushingly overpowered, and can be used to solve virtually every combat encounter in exactly the same way. Your magic spells are overpowered as well, and the fact that you can use items at any time means that even if you do somehow go down, you won't be staying down - after all, you've got hundreds of items to keep you and your allies on their feet. There is pretty good enemy variety, but it just doesn't matter because you can win every encounter without varying your strategy significantly - all but two or three post-game bosses can be solved in the exact same way.

The core plot is terrible, the combat is terrible, and the sidequests are mostly terrible. The game has some interesting ideas, but it executes them very poorly, and its emotional notes don’t work at all. The game is enormously long, but is mostly just repetitive, and I regret spending so much of my free time on it – I could have done so many more interesting things with my time, but I kept trying to push on, trying to find the fun, because I wanted to like the game.

But I just couldn’t. The game just never comes together.

At the start of the game, the characters run out of gas, and push their car to the gas station, while “Stand By Me” plays in the background. This is an excellent character and tone defining moment, and it starts the game off quite strong. I wanted to love this game – this game about four friends working together.

But I can’t stand by Square on this one.

Where is CHOOSING different allies? Ok, more linear story and all, but still, story is poorly put together and character development is non existant. Point apart, random interaction moments between the main characters are awesomely put together. GG, honestly. Keep this, redo everything else.
What are these english voice overs? At least try... 60euros game HELLO!

    Few different monsters.
    Boring bosses.
Ultra mega crappy 'stealth' system. God damn that infiltration mission.

The last good FF i've enjoyed was FF Crisis Core. Epic.

There is so much wrong with this game that I want to get the few good things out of the way first.

That's where the good ends though. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING else about this game is pure trash. I won't mention any story spoilers, but let's just say that there's a lot of empty setup for no real payoff.

The combat. I can't stand this trend they seem to be following. Final Fantasy is no longer an RPG. The combat is not RPG combat. This is closer to Devil May Cry than any Final Fantasy game. Get this **** out of Final Fantasy. I refuse to buy any more Final Fantasy titles until this garbage is stopped. To be more specific though, magic is useless. New equipment doesn't feel exciting. Strategy and planning don't play as much of a role in fights.

For the sake of keeping this review short I'll just say everything else sucks too. Quests, the DLC, the shallow and directionless open world... Just don't play this game.

Giving it a 2 feels generous considering the following points:

-you don't care about any of your party members, the story, or really anything. No compelling reasons to. They just kinda reveal this story and as you go along you're like "yeah okay I guess" I was a big ffx fan and there I was saving the world from a reoccurring apocalypse that made you constantly say "oh s***" as the story unfolded. Honestly most dialogue will make you just laugh on its over the top cornyness. -The whole navigation of menu systems is just plain obnoxious, poorly designed, and tedious to do basic tasks. -Magic is pretty unpleasantly different from all other FF games. If you loved the old days of getting fat mp pools and chugging mp pots while chaining out fireaga's you are gonna be very sad. -Im real glad they gave such a cool rooster. Which is sarcasm cause instead of like 8 party members in ffx I get these 4 members from a boy band and am locked in. -You mean to tell me in ffx I could set conditions for my party to do things, a game from 2001 and this game gives you ABSOLUTELY 0 OPTIONS? They will just do what they want. No controlling them, no setting any rules for their actions like "throw a potion at me when I'm below 30% health" you will be doing 100% of the work and that work is spam b and hold x when it flashes. Potion up when you get hit. That's pretty much it. -One of the most deeply upsetting offenses to me is the terrible sense of rewards from items. Why on gods green earth did they make it so difficult to get 3 accessory slots for each of my party members, and the VAST majority of what you get as rewards and findings are accessories. You'll have like 30 accessories, and no slots to fill them with. Hope you don't like finding weapons cause the sense of accomplishment in progression is pretty much non existant. -the dialogue that exists from banter and just running around is like 2 different lines, very repatative, and feels so incredibly lazy. The first time I laughed a lot how cheesy it was, then I got annoyed fast. It didn't give me a sense of fun and furthering my relationship to the world or characters, it felt like just cheap fillers just because. None of it felt compelling at all. -so you mean to tell me I'm a prince and you're gonna go ask me to take some pictures? You want me to find your dog? Are you serious? If no one treats you like a prince, and no one gives you a quest that feels suited to the situation of the world's state, you will not care at all for anyone in the story or the story itself. No side stories working into the main story at all. They are laughably, obscenely dumb quests. Get ready for quests designed in 1995 where you've got one of two quest types with extremely limited variation. This is actually what killed the game for me and made it unplayable. They had the chance to make all the side quests about the story but instead it is horrible, horrible filler for your time. -seeing the skill tree briefly is what sold me on the game and I was quickly disappointed. The scaling feels like something in early beta and they seem happy with the values set for unlocking skills. And it's terrible. Feels pretty much pointless for half the tree and the other half is so costly you can only get a few of the good ones. Feels very rushed which is weird cause it seems like they had some time to make this. -they could have given you a cool starting area and some sick loooong ass cut scenes in the beginning but instead it starts out "hey come to this training room for 30 minutes and then look at these paintings with a paragraph of text to get any feeling of the world around you." really? FFVIII was kinda future based and that felt cool as hell. The scenery, the weapons, the characters. This feels like a bad kingdom hearts joke. The different kinds of weapons don't really feel like it matters, especially so with most of your skill tree giving you abilities with a sword. So sure you can equip some pistols or a great sword, but then you don't get to use those skills. Why are there not skills for each weapons type? Why does the game give my main character the option to equip any weapon type and then penalize you for not using the sword. The game was in development for 10 years, they released several FF disappointments and they gave us this very weird, out of place end result. I genuinely hope and dream for a FFXVI that rights their wrongs and saves the series but to be honest I don't see that happening. Between all this and DLC controversy square Enix has tainted my faith in them and sadly they are just another big, old company that didn't age well. They grew stale and seemed to rely on their fame to carry their sales.

I bought it on sale for $20 and I feel like it wasn't worth it. I would value it as worthless seeing as even if it was given to me for free, I would have played it the same amount of time before putting it down for good.

Now to my complaint with the game. I dread to think what FF15 was like before the numerous "improvements" and "fixes", because even now:
The plot is a boring mess that was possibly acceptable for a game that was released 30 years, but by today's standards the writing and pacing are slopping at best.
The combat is messy and uneven. Half of the time I had difficulties even understanding what was happening as four black clothed figures were trying to hack a group of uniformly colored enemies to pieces. Other times the combat was ending so quickly that I didn't even understand why it needed to be there at all.
The open world is one of the most boring ones I have ever seen. Empty and dull. But I must say that I might be biased on this one.
Overall: 6/10 If you like open world games you might score it a bit higher, but it doesn't deserve a 10 under any conditions.

Final Fantasy XV may not feel like an older game from the franchise, but that doesn't mean it's bad. I grew up with the older Final Fantasy game and while XV is different, that doesn't make it a bad game in the franchise. I enjoyed my time spent in game and look forward to doing more.

While FFXV is at times engrossing and beautiful, it can also feel like a pretty, hollow shell. The last quarter of the game feels rushed, as if the developers had to wrap things up under pressure, and that's after waiting over a decade for this to come out. While it is not the stellar titan we hoped for, it's certainly Final Fantasy, and we can all be thankful for that.
