Fallout 76 is the worst game in the history of game dev. And the worst - in terms of the opportunities that Bethesda has, and which they did not use and did not justify.

The game of the beginning of the 2000s is trying to sell today as a new, revolutionary product. In the game there are no normal animation, physics, graphics. Very scanty, monotonous filling of the world. Even maiden, indie games made by one person on the knee now look better and it is more interesting to play them.

Instead, you run across nothing but creatures. No occupied buildings, no little towns of people, just... nothing. This makes for a very lonely game. The creatures are nice, and the plot is just okay. Mix that with a boring game for my 3 star review. Expand

One of the best multiplayers this year. Nothing can compare to the fun i've had playing this game and with friends makes it a thousand times better (unlike most toxic fallout fans). This is a true fallout game and i've been playing fallout since the 1998, yes it might be different but what's the fun in playing the same thing over and over again, grow up.

To be honest guys, this game should be a free to play beta. Buggy, boring and runs like crap. I have a high end system and you can't even turn off Depth of field or Motion blurr, mean come on! I don't believe in giving a game a zero. I mean a zero basically means there is no game. So a 3 is about where this game is at the moment. Save your money and wait for this hot mess to get fixed.

This game is missing what makes Fallout a standout series. Was very disappointed by the lack of any real story or NPCs. Graphics were fine but just felt like another generic survival multiplayer which there are already plenty of.

They made it more of a shooter and added inconsequential building of settlements with a **** story. The music was great....all 5 songs. Spend some effin money and time and make a good game! This was the biggest slap in the face to fans I have ever seen. I've had it with the platform itself. It is no longer fun and quirky, it's outdated and limiting. The game is an empty broken shell of Fallout 4 - dated graphics (dated even by 2008 standards), astonishing bugs, and worst of all - no story, no purpose, no reason to play. The game doesn't even feel like a new game - it feels like someone tried to create a mod to Fallout 4 and abandoned the idea after 30 minutes of trying.

To me, the characters are what made Fallout, Fallout. In this game, the world doesn't feel alive, despite all the other players running around. There are no characters to talk to, to hear stories from. No humans to give you quests that have an actual meaning to them. All quests in this game are given by robots, which takes away the feeling that you are doing the quest to help a person. All the quests are repetitive fetch quests or escort missions. All in all, this game is a huge letdown that feels very empty and incomplete. I do not recommend this game until Bethesda adds mod support and private servers that allow you to up the player count to at least 64. Then, maybe, there will be some possibility for roleplay, which may or may not make the experience any better. Expand

A truly disappointing entry into the fallout series. Bethesda misread their formula and added all of the wrong ingredients. While the idea of a multiplayer fallout game initially intrigued me quite a bit, there is just far too much wrong with this game to give it any kind of endorsement.

A truly disappointing entry into the fallout series. Bethesda misread their formula and added all of the wrong ingredients. While the idea of a multiplayer fallout game initially intrigued me quite a bit, there is just far too much wrong with this game to give it any kind of endorsement.

Multiplayer – The multiplayer aspect of this game almost feels like an afterthought with how bad it is. Bethesda usually nails single player games but their formula does not adopt very well to the multiplayer stage. The game tries to straddle the line between single-player and multi-player without really committing to either. This ends up one of the biggest issues with the game as it was marketed specifically as a multiplayer fallout, so when one of the biggest features falls flat, it really impacts the game across the board. Other players basically have no reason to interact with you at any point. PvP combat with other players is a joke, with no consequence and no real sense of danger from seeing other players. Someone can walk right up to you and empty an entire magazine into you for little to no damage, something easily ignored even in the middle of combat. Questing with others is also pointless as every member of the party needs to separately complete each objective without the option to share any sort of progress. I can see what Bethesda was shooting for when they attempted to make this multiplayer instead of focusing on single player but they clearly missed the mark.

Combat – Combat feels sluggish and unresponsive, which is only made worse by the neutered VATS system. Without the ability to use VATS in any meaningful way, Fallout 76 has to rely on its shooter mechanics which fall noticeably short of the bar set by other games. Bullets often seem more like nerf darts and melee can be like wading through syrup at times.

Perks – The perk system now feels exactly like a loot box, which I hope is just an accident on Bethesda’s part. Rather than having any sort of control over how your character specializes, the random nature of the new perk system basically forces players to just cross their fingers and hope that they get a somewhat decent collection of perk cards. Choice is almost completely ignored until much later levels where the player will have eventually acquired the majority of the perk cards.

Crafting – Crafting also feels largely neutered and useless. With many weapon customization options seemingly missing from the game and no support coming from the community any time soon, this feels like a clear step backwards for no reason. Bethesda already had a working system in fallout 4 that they could and should have improved upon rather than dropping the ball as they have.

Exploration/Questing – While the map does look big at a glance, the world feels strangely empty due to the lack of NPC hubs and quest givers. It feels like quite a few assets were taken directly from Fallout 4 as the world seems almost too familiar at times. Most quests devolve rather quickly into fetch quests or kill quests which is a disappointing direction for the franchise. Some of the new locations do look impressive but the world itself only looks good the first few times through an area, after that they rapidly grow monotonous as the same enemies spawn each time you wander nearby. Questing lacks any sort of mystery as the outcome of most quests in known right from the start.

Micro Transactions –One of the most polished aspects of the game seems to be the Atom shop. This is just the next poor choice in a series of bad decisions made by Bethesda regarding monetization. Given their most recent failures with the monetization of mods and the failure that was the creation club in Skyrim and Fallout 4, I can’t say I’m surprised to see them try this again, although it is disappointing to see them resort to this level of greed. What content is present in the shop feels like a joke with how simple it is and that’s not even factoring in the heinous prices attached.

I feel that Bethesda missed the mark pretty much across the board with this entry into the Fallout franchise. Their excessive focus on wringing more money out of their players is starting to become an irritating trend and the lack of work put into this game is almost a slap in the face for their dedicated fans. It feels more like the Bethesda accountant made all the creative decisions behind this game which is a shame considering how well received their other titles have been. They had a winning formula they outright ignored in what seems like a quick cash grab. I understand that not everyone will agree with what I’ve written, but I’ve played quite a few Bethesda games now, and this feels like a serious departure from their past successes.

This game is neither terrible enough to deserve a 0, nor is it anywhere near good enough to deserve a 10.

Put simply, it's Fallout 4 in a far-less apocalyptic setting, where you have no relationship of any kind with in-world characters. It's basically the experience you get when you wander ruins in FO4, which is fine in moderation, but it gets really old when it's the only experience
This game is neither terrible enough to deserve a 0, nor is it anywhere near good enough to deserve a 10.

Put simply, it's Fallout 4 in a far-less apocalyptic setting, where you have no relationship of any kind with in-world characters. It's basically the experience you get when you wander ruins in FO4, which is fine in moderation, but it gets really old when it's the only experience available.

Everything is holotapes, fetch quests, killing anonymous NPCs, and finding people's corpses. Everything.

Worse, the tech in the game is barely upgraded from Fallout 4, which is a serious problem when you consider that Fallout 4 itself was technologically dated, not to mention very buggy.

Worse still, most of the well-known bugs in Fallout 4 persist in this brand new game, except this time, we can't mod them out when Bethesda is too lazy to do it themselves.

Worst of all, many of these bugs blend in with an extremely-naive server/client architecture that will see people exploiting the game, cheating and griefing to their heart's contents, because almost no forethought seems to have been put into the idea that the client is enemy territory and you must not trust anything coming from it. Instead, almost all game state appears to be done client-side and synchronized periodically with the server via "checkpoints", which appear simply to be savegames sent to the server instead of the hard drive.

This game is a horrendous mess in terms of technology, and the hubris of Bethesda in thinking they could push out yet another barely-modded version of their engine into an ONLINE MULTIPLAYER space without having to put actual work into it is just mind-boggling to me. That's all to say nothing of their stubborn refusal to admit that PC players don't all have 16:9 1080p displays.

Speaking of multiplayer, the ludicrous choice to ship on PC with always-on voice chat, rather than push-to-talk, is a staggeringly-bad idea. Unlike console players, a lot of PC players use built-in mics, not clever directional mics on their headset that live two inches from the player's mouth, so you'll be walking around your wasteland hearing people eat, argue, watch TV, constantly clack their mechanical keyboards, etc., and it will utterly ruin your immersion.

Also speaking of multiplayer, the PvP has been utterly gutted. For me, a PvE fan, it's not a big deal, but if you're a PvP fan, save your money, it's just going to be frustrating and boring. The game should have shipped with a per-character flag, set during creation, that would shuffle you to one or the other set of servers, each with either a PvE ruleset or a PvP ruleset. This attempt to force the two together is totally built out of fail.

Bethesda's response to almost all criticism is stubborn refusal to listen. There's a reddit thread where they "respond" to our "beta" feedback, requests, and criticism and it's almost entirely "yeah, we hear ya, but nah." The game's first patch, which was the full size of the original game by the way, has almost nothing worthy of mention.

Oh, and lest I forget: the balance is all over the place. Sometimes, you can fight an enemy twice your level and it's a pushover, and sometimes you're the pushover fighting something your own level. I really feel like the game simply wasn't finished and they shipped it anyway. Given how short the "beta' was, I feel very strongly this was the case.

The only upside here is that there's a little bit of Fallout lore to be discovered, and if you're a Fallout fan, then you want to discover that lore. Mind you, a lot of it seems to be convenient retcons and/or riddled with continuity errors that are just blatantly inappropriate for the time frame and location in the universe. Still, there's some fun to be had discovering the minimal story in the main quest and I'm okay with doing that.

So yeah, it's a 4 from me. If you're a fan, get it some time if it's on deep sale and play the main quest for the lore. And hope that by then they've fixed the bugs. But it's Bethesda, and their track record of fixing bugs is almost non-existent, so... good luck with that.

Bethesda should have simply made a co-op version of the original Fallout 4. That's what people actually wanted and asked for. Not this.

I'm hoping Bethesda will get Fallout 76 there someday, but as it stands, Fallout 76 has too many bugs, one being nearly game breaking. But lets start out with some positives:

Fallout 76 looks nice. Its huge and there's great variety in the landscapes. There are lots and lots of quests, which seems to be one of better ways to get nice loot/gear. There are plenty of broken quests, but there are enough great ones so you can continue to the next and hope Bethesda patches them later. Fallout 76 also has tonnes of written and spoken flavor (in the form of holotapes), much like fallout 4. Perhaps even more.

Here is where Fallout 76 takes a huge hit: this game has no NPCs, but the community is supposed to build CAMPS and settlements where a lot of cooperative game play happens. On live servers however, you never see other player's camps, and the camps, settlements and farms you laboriously build vanish randomly. This makes the social part of Fallout 76 extremely one sided. Group up, kill stuff. No civilization building here.

Hopefully Bethesda has plans to fix this (God forbid this is functioning as designers intended!) Till then, 4/10 is the best I can give a single faceted multiplayer game.

Seriously Bethesda - quit making Fallout games.

This horrible lackluster online adaptation of Fallout is horrible. Graphics - horrible in today's market of ray tracing and supreme visuals.

Where is the story.. the interesting locations. Albeit there has been some thought from the location designers - you can see hint of what made Fallout fun in some of the backstories and locations, but where is the motivation to do cool things?

Bethesda seriously - you were the **** when it came to making open worlds to explore and make your impact in which ever way you chose.

I would list the problems with Fallout 76 in more detail but others here have hit upon most points I would make.

Bethesda, you alienated your fan base with Fallout 76. I wish that people that could have actually impacted the game would have spoken up and said how bad this game is before it was released so that corrections could have been made. I would have rather had no Fallout game than Fallout 76.

    Nuff said.

There are 20€ early access survival games made by tiny indie studios that are better in every single possible way. How did they allow this game to be released is beyond me, but hey people will give us 60€ and maybe we will fix it in couple of months... or years... or never... lets just release mod support so that modders can do it for us. Let's then charge people for mods.
There are bugs in this game that exist since freaking Oblivion, yet "that biggest team ever, everyone is crazy focused on this game, best we make" dev team doesn't fix it.

Everything that defined Fallout game before has been removed or simplified to extreme in this game.
    Perks, SPECIAL, VATS system, NPC's

What we are left with is a hollow husk of a once wonderful, mature universe. Hey but you can do emotes now... hurray. **** Bethesda, **** Todd Howard for ruining this franchise. We want Fallout 2 in modern engine not this buggy, ugly piece of **** you give us.
Old disgusting, buggy, broken engine that is 7y old.
This game simply looks horrible by today standards. No more free passes on bugs and excuses by Bethesda, it's unacceptable to sell this game for 60€!

All the junk you really need (aluminum I'm talking to you) to craft ammo (which is both prohibitively expensive, and is prohibitively expensive in a world that gives you little to no caps to purcahse it with) is a CHORE. This game is not only EMPTY, but A CHORE. I am *TRYING* to like this game but Bethesda designed it to be such a CHORE to like I don't really like it at all. My brother asked me if he should get it, and I told him not to bother. My buddy (who knows I have a fallout tattoo on my arm and have been playing fallout since 1998) asked me if he should get it an I said no.

I wouldn't get a refund I'm get a double refund if I could. This game is garbage. It's empty. It's a **** farmfest, and Bethesda could increase the "barebone life support drop rates" of many junk items to make it so you dont have to GRIND to GRIND, but I doubt they will.

I'm throwing down 20 bucks betting TES6 is gonna blow too.

This game is terrible. It could've been incredible but it's terrible.

Also, it runs like crap on my 1070 hex core gaming setup, I have to exit and rejoin the game every hour or so to stop the horrible memory leaks (which also sometimes require a system restart) and for the love of God the game doesn't even CLOSE properly and I have to task manager kill the process to get it to exit...

    What a disaster.

Okay so lets get this started. First and foremost I am giving this a four not that it may deserve it entirely, in fact a three would probably be fair but hey its Fallout and no matter what I **** with Fallout. Truth be told this game is majorly lacking especially for a game in the Fallout world.

    1. NPC's or therefore the lack of any. There is just no life to this wasteland in 76, no settlers, no people, nothing but ghouls, robots, super mutants and obviously the scorched. It is literally a dead area with nothing but limited enemies, no bandits and few other players far an between. It majorly takes away from what made the Fallout series so good, and that is interacting with the settlers and kicking bandit ass.

    2. Caps. It is a major pain in the ass to get caps, the vendors in my opinion are a joke on top of a **** pile. They charge way too much, don't pay you **** for your goods and have a very low amount of caps to buy with. An once they run out of caps you literally have to wait for them to get more caps which is not worth the wait. Not even to mention that you literally have to pay caps to quick travel, like seriously, caps are a **** to get already and now we have to pay for quick travel?

    3. C.A.M.P Stash. This has to be one of my biggest peeves with this game. I am a hoarder, I like to collect everything and anything so I can craft and have a ready supply. The only small issue though or rather biggest issue is that your camp stash has literally no room for anything. I filled the damn thing up before beta even ended. An now I am stuck with the fact that my armor keeps breaking, my guns need repairing, I need to make stimps and everything else and I can't because I don't have anywhere to put my damn materials. I sure as hell can't carry the **** with me as I get over encumbered too quickly. Want a better review by a mile from me? Make the damn stash unlimited space like all Fallout games.

    4. I don't even need to mention the bugs, I feel like that has been established enough as it is. All games have bugs when they come out so I won't go into this deeply, but I would love when I killed something that it doesn't hump into the ground and I lose my ****.

This could go on an on but I won't bore you. This game is really lacking what made Fallout so great. The story, the lore, the npcs, bandits, it has good features to it but they are being drowned out by the ****ty features. At this point your just going through the motions and getting annoyed at the same time because you can't keep enough materials on hand to keep your armor fixed and your guns ready.

Everyone I've met has wanted to either trade, team up or pvp, I really thought the pvp would be a joke because of the nearly 0 damage thing but people seem to engage often with me. It has the best map I've seen from bethesda and the environmental storytelling stuff is great solo (not great in a team where you don't have as much time to just listen to tapes or sift through terminals).

I love the survival mechanic and weight limit, I really enjoyed it when they added it to fallout 4 and I understand why people would be frustrated with it. The housing stuff is pretty cool too, I found a lead deposit in the ground near a raider train station up on a mountain top so I set up a bullet factory and have been making a killing selling bullets to new players.

Now the game IS a buggy mess, most stuff is visual glitches which don't bother me too much, the real and biggest issue (I'm playing on ps4) automatic weapons cause stutter about 25% of the time? It seems to be the farther from the vault you are the worse it gets and this is honestly unacceptable. A few quests are bugged, I've crashed once in 30 hours, the game occasionally hitches when it loads a new area, sometimes grenades just fall through the floor if you aim straight down, and certain enemies like the grafton monster will just stop moving for some reason.

The hate bandwagon is totally overblown, the game is decent, would be great if not buggy.

My mistake. So here I am on Metacritic creating an account to write a review about it.

Fallout 76 is not like Fallout 1, 2, 3, New Vegas, 4, or even Tactics. There are no meaningful choices to make. Many of the quests appear to be randomly-generated repeats or mild variations with different scorched red things to fight. There are no characters. There are stories, but they're in the form of depressing audiotapes and looting corpses.

The perks system is interesting. I really like the mechanics of opening packs and filling slots with different cards to create unique builds. Every new character would be a completely unique experience based on those random draws. Unfortunately, the system is constrained by multiplayer balance and why can't I lockpick, what was I training for in the vault my whole life, this should be an essential and basic skill known by every wunderkind in the vault... though some of the cards have funny pictures in the Fallout style.

The graphics are also nice. Appalachia is presented well and the soundtrack was just starting to grow on me. I'd just stumbled across an interesting little shack in the woods when

"Hey man, you want to join up to do some quests, easy gold!"

Three voices start blaring out on the computer speakers, completely erasing the immersion of the Appalachian setting. I hadn't joined any party voice or set any public interaction settings. It was jarring especially when they started shooting at me after I didn't reply (wasn't wearing headphones).

So I'm giving this version of Fallout a bad score. True, I shouldn't have spent money on it without checking what it really was first, or I would have waited for it to go on sale in a few months. Despite that leaving a bad taste in my mouth, the game is a disappointment and I hope future Fallout games don't follow the same route, and return to the engaging characters, moral dilemmas, and unique stories from the previous games. Instead random strangers shout at you and chase away any hope of immersive storytelling.

I should start this review off with stating that I'm not a fan of survival games at all so I came into F76 as a very skeptical person however that said, it's not an entirely terrible experience either.

    Pros:
    - Improved animations
    - Usual Bethesda environmental storytelling
    - Ability to run around wreaking all sorts of havoc with pals
    - A non pay-to-win cosmetics shop that with a currency that is extremely easy to obtain while playing the game (With the whole free DLC bit, I figured it'd be a royal pain to even get the currency but so far its pretty easy, a bit tedious at times but generally easy.)
    - Environment is really pretty - there are some places that are a bit breathtaking when looking around and viewing, great for screenshot potential and building a C.A.M.P
    - Base-building has been upgraded - It feels a lot more responsive compared to how FO4's base-building mechanic worked, parts snap easier and are easier to handle.

    Cons:
    - Random FPS drops (I've noticed it happening a bit more frequently but it could be attributed to my AV)
    - Soft-locks on workstations - Every now and then, I'll encounter a soft-lock on a workstation when trying to use it that requires me to end the process via task manager
    - Not enough graphical options - the graphical options you can toggle feel very limited currently and the player has to resort to an .ini tweak to be able to turn off motion blur.
    - Lack of meaningful PvP - as it stands PvP isn't even worth the time/attempt. Better off making a team and PvEing. If they alter it to allow Raider types and/or Faction-typed PvP, it'll be an improvement.
    - Engine's age is definitely starting to show - The engine(Creation Engine) has slowly started to become a hindrance to the game's true potential with the hiccups it has.

Overall, I'd say the game's a solid 6, it's not great but not terrible, has plenty of room for improvement. If Bethesda works on it and provides a lot of great content additions, it could potentially become greater.

Side note: Bethesda has confirmed they're looking into Push-to-Talk as well as an FoV slider and an increase to their stash limit so that wasn't listed as a con, it'd of been nice at launch but I cannot in my right mind fault them for having a messy launch for their first actual online experience.

    -- EDIT 11/27 --
Reducing score to 4/10, dailies are causing a hard PC crash/lock which is making the game nearly unplayable as is. The bug/error only seems to happen on loading screens when fast traveling back to the objective.

I was a fan of Bethesda, and the fallout titles before they were acquired. I'm one of the very old guard of these games, to the point where I've spent more time in the world playing or making mods, than most of the developers. As such, I've always been interested in why they take the direction they do in each new installment. After many hours in game, I simply cannot believe they had anything other than utter cynicism at heart when they produced this product. There were a million and one ways they could experiment with the title and multiplayer functionality, but the only reason I see that we could have ended up here is if they set out with the goal of making an incredible cheap and content devoid game for the purpose of recurrent monetisation.

That's all this is. This is closer in terms of content, enjoyment, and I'd be willing to wager, development cost, to fallout shelter, than a mainline fallout game.

They wanted to see how this experiment played out? Tell them the only way they'll listen. Don't buy

    What do I mean?

Take the size of the map for instance. Four times bigger should make a Fall Out fan squee with glee, and I did...to start with. All that extra land to traverse and find easter-eggs in? That sounded like heaven. And in places it is. Until that is you discover the fast travel costs caps...

...which would be fine if caps were readily available.
...which they're not because then it would impact on the survival aspect.
...because of the thirst and hunger bars needing to have some gameplay impact to warrant their inclusion.
...and you'd be able to buy the over-priced gear in the shops too easily.

And a lack of caps would be fine if:

...four times the map size means you can spend five-ten minutes just trouncing around, and sometimes longer just to get to the next quest point.
...which would be fine if you didn't keep running into random encounters, slowing you down further.
...in larger groups than other Fallout games, because of y'know...multi-player?
...and ridiculously short respawn timers, because of y'know...multi-player?
...and that means cutting into your hunger and thirst bars.
...which in turn means an excessively large amount of busy bodywork just to get from point A to point B.

I wish this was the exception to the rule, but this game design *is* the rule. Which is a real shame, because occasionally a side quest or a holo-tape recording is intriguing enough to lift it out of the put of mediocrity. Heck, going into flaming caves as a Fire Breather is actually visually stunning in places, but there's just never enough of it to justify the game overall.

Then either exit the game or die of starvation and thirst, and people can kill you, no idea how it happened but I lost most of my stuff and that was that. Running across the map to locations that look like diaper, your running breath lasts about 3 seconds because it's cool to catch your breath every 3 seconds like not even overweight people do in real life. They didnt even fix the damn combat system which has been the weakest point since Skyrim, it's worse than fighting on a cellphone app game... So disappointed, there was some magic in Fall Out 4, some fantastic characters, maybe some here but I don't even see them, the world looks like **** the combat is **** the multiplayer aspect is **** They even ruined the settlements/camp, you cant even make outposts around the place and make it your own you have to choose one location and thats it with no other survivors... Do not buy. Totally forgot, in a game where looting is the main thing, to cap the weight of 150 lbs without perks is suicide, people walking around because they dont want to throw things yet cant run or fast travel to salvage, 2 guns and gear and a few scraps is 150 lbs, good luck finding a ton of cool stuff only having to throw it, **** that. It looks the same as Fallout 4 but its as empty as a desert. The only "fun" there is is to either search for someone to kill or wait to get killed. For that kind of fun though it is MUCH better to buy Hunt Showdown for example or anything similar. This is just a sad milking cow of Bethesdas own making. Just an RPG publishing company trying to get in the multiplayer PvP arena genre and only groping in the dark. Save your money and dont buy this nonsense. Expand

Fallout 76 is a Fallout fanatics dream. But much like Elder Scrolls Online, it was rushed and the execution was severely lacking.

Being a Bethesda game, one can go into it assuming glitches and bugs galore. While it may not be GOOD to be known for it, it does speak towards the company's ability that millions of people have played their games despite the hiccups because the game is engaging. Bethesda's removal of typical NPCs removes much of the charm of their Fallout games. Many people will remember their favorite characters from previous games, but that no longer exists here.

Further plaguing this game is the infuriating UI. Fallout's UI has never been pleasant to use, but it typically is at least pragmatic. This game was clearly created with consoles in mind. The UI is built so that triggers and a small amount of buttons can be used to navigate menus. The problem is, when you hamstring a UI to use a small fraction of the available buttons, the user is left wondering WHY?

Another item that bogs down the fun that could be had in this game is the servers. I haven't experienced lag like other reviewers, so I am more willing to think this is a combination of high load, poor connectivity, and performance that isn't actually lag related. My main gripe, is that you do not connect to the same server every time and you cannot choose which server you are connecting to. What does this mean for you, the player? Why bother claiming an outpost and building a massive base (while using massive resources) when the next time you connect, the world you built it in may not even be there? I experienced this first hand and I didn't even have to wait very long. I claimed a base and built a simple shack with turrets on it. Not wanting to die AFK, I disconnected for a few minutes to run to the bathroom. Post reconnecting, I found all of my work gone. The base was not claimed by another user, it was not destroyed, it just did not exist.

Another point of frustration is the Social UI. It's a multiplayer game, so there is a Social tab so that you can play with your friends. But getting into the same team can be a huge task. I understand that this is Fallout's first multiplayer game, but there was clearly only very rudimentary testing done on this feature. In my first attempt to play with a single friend (not even a group of more than 2), we were unable to join parties because we both attempted to invite each other to a party. Fallout continued to say this was not possible because we were both already in a different party. It took a complete exiting of the program for both of us and a concerted orchestrated effort to get the party together.

There are also still the myriad of glitches and bugs from general game play contend with after major gripes as well. Normally in single player Fallout installments, this can range from hilarious to frustrating. For a multiplayer installment, it ranges from frustrating to infuriating. The base game was $60, it was not worth $60. The beta should have told them exactly what they (should have) known, this was not ready for release. Laden with bugs that extend far beyond basic and performance that leaves users wanting.

I have to sadly rate this game poorly. While it isn't a 0 or 1 like the salty reviewers might leave you to believe, this game is definitely one you should wait for huge sales on (this game is worth MAYBE $15-20). I love Bethesda and the Fallout series, but not even my love for the game can outweigh the mistakes that run plentiful in this installment.

I also need to chastise Bethesda briefly. If all you were using the BETA for was play testing, fine. But the response you received from the BETA should have prompted you to ask "should we push back release in exchange for a better product?" We would all have shouted YES, PLEASE YES. I understand you have deadlines, there are investors and higher ups that demand results, and you just have internal time tables that require certain goals be met. But you failed. Horribly. And while the feeling may not be ubiquitous across the gaming community, I can guarantee you if you asked your player base if they wanted another ESO experience where they had to wait years for the game to be polished and enjoyable, they'd say no. You should have learned from ESO's mistakes and ensured you had a polished game before release. Now the player base will be tiny and what people will remember about this game is that it is terrible. Because first impressions last. You've relegated this game to maybe being picked up as a curiosity once it goes on mega-sale. You had better work fast in the next few weeks to snatch it from this label.

A total money grab. Buggy and broken. Bethesda just re released the fallout 4 engine and skimped in every way possible (no NPC == less expenses). For years i have been a big fan of Bethesda and most say that i am rather Shocked of their latest Release, and here is my list of the absolute Chaos i went through playing my 30 hours Fallout 76

    - i started struggling with the resolution of the game i have a 37" Monitor, and when i started the game it kept going to Borderless Window Mode with 1920x1080, when i was aiming for a Locked Fullscren mode with 2560x1600, it took me proberly and hour before it suddenly worked... What a start...

While roaming through the first 45 min of the world, i met another player and we decided to run together to gain some experience killing things. We then encountered a pack of Mongrel dogs, and we started fighting these, and suddenly after i shot one of them, it went crazy (the ragdoll of the Mongrel i suppose it was) went to the air stretching across the whole map like something i have never seen before, just flying around, and after a while it happend to the rest of the pack, and it ended up killing us both because we could not hit them as they where stretching across the under the terrain, we were like, what in the bloody hell was that.. and this i just the top of the iceberg.

so let me short it down alittle.

    - AI is stupid and buggy as hell, you can trap them easy in the environment and kill them.

    - Scorched Model and Animation is absolutely Hideous it looks and feels like something from a 2000 Game... COME ON!!!!!, and same goes to alot of the other creatures!

    - Environment Design is SOULLESS, it just feels like they had to finish this game in a hurry and had absolutely no love for the environment, i've seen better designers on youtube creating speed terrain designs in Unreal and Unity Engines.

    - Textures, ohh the textures.. in many areas i encountered Flickering Textures which was so amazingly annoying to look at and so low res, and also encountered the whole Skymap flickering to Black.

    - Environment props are the same as fallout 4 plus some new ones which looks horrible too.

    - Crazy Framerate drops obviously because of the lack of optimization...!!

    - Too much Terrain, huge lack of city / industrial environments.. West Virginia? No Virginia, fallout i think had a great variation the big City and the wasteland, this is just Bullsh*t..

Bethesda just didn't do it this time, i am sorry and very sorry for all the people who had their hype up for this, what an absolutely disappointment, i do NOT recommend people paying for this.

i only give them 2 in rating for the online part, which actually seem to work rather great, but nothing else worked this time, good luck bethesda cleaning up this mess.

I won't give it a 0, that's an insult to Bethesda, but I will be unbiased in saying this is not a good game. Game breaking bugs left and right, horrendous FPS, PC FPS cap, empty world that plays like a walking simulator. This isn't the Fallout fans fell in love with. It only appeals to a certain niche of gamers, and even then it doesn't have enough content to last very long in the current state.

The underlying mechanics of this game are almost identical to Fallout 4 which is both good and bad. I really enjoyed Fallout 4 and don't mind too much if Bethesda reuses that model for a new game. However, it is exactly the same as Fallout 4 and, after playing games like Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Red Dead Redemption 2, this feels very antiquated. That said, there are a few things that made this game unplayable for me.

The survival aspect is a complete nuisance. I felt like my game experience was constantly interrupted by starvation and dehydration. Frustrated, I took it upon myself to gather a ton of food and water so I could "survive" while exploring. Unfortunately, this filled up my inventory weight limit and I was unable to do any looting without becoming over encumbered. I'm sure there are strategies to balance looting with eating and drinking but I do not play Fallout games to learn how to juggle.

The stash weight limit combined with a fee for fast travel caused inventory management to consume a large percentage of my play time. I like to loot everything until my inventory is full so I have plenty of crafting materials. Of course, my inventory filled up very quickly since I also grabbed all the food and water I could find. I needed to make several trips back to my C.A.M.P. to unload my junk. However, with the fee for fast travel, I often found my self running all the way back to where I was exploring. I reached my stash limit after only exploring a couple areas. Trying to make this work, I learned that junk needs to be scrapped before adding to the stash. This requires a crafting station which are few and far between if you don't have plans to craft one at your C.A.M.P. I eventually built crafting stations when I moved my C.A.M.P. to a new location which caused a whole new set of problems.

I spent a couple hours building a C.A.M.P. in a new location. This revealed several problems. The terrain quickly became the most formidable adversary in the game. I was building on a hill near rocks and trees. I had to tear down and rebuild at least 20 times because pieces could not be placed near certain terrain. I finally just had to accept an incomplete building with missing walls or floors. After all this work the server kicked me out. After continuing the game in a new instance, my C.A.M.P. was gone and the entire structure was "stored". My C.A.M.P. location was no longer available, I had to pay to set up a new C.A.M.P., and I wasn't allowed to "place" my previous structure anywhere in my new location. I spent another couple hours building a new C.A.M.P. only to have that one gone the next time I played. This was enough for me to quit playing and ask for refund.

Multiplayer did more harm than good. I was hoping for some sort of hybrid between Fallout 4 and Elder Scrolls Online. Unfortunately, multiplayer felt underdeveloped and very limited. I think Bethesda made the mistake of trying to slap a multiplayer mod into Fallout 4 rather than developing something new that combined the best of both worlds.

I have seen counters against negative reviews using the shallow argument that criticism is just from "haters" afraid of change. I'm sure Bethesda is mature enough to recognize the irony in that line of thinking. I'm sure they will acknowledge the disappointment underlying the negative reviews and produce a much better product in the future.

Firstly, it's a buggy, poorly delivered mess. The AI is either broken or they just didn't really bother adding any in, the game crashes and the servers go down constantly and other varied problems persist throughout gameplay.

Secondly, the lack of NPCs make the world feel empty, the quests & quest log are just unappealing.

The multiplayer aspect is completely unnecessary as PvP is completely lacklustre and hasn't had any thought into it and perhaps the only saving grace of the game; being able to play co-op with friends is fun, admittedly, but so far I've not had a single quest where I've thought "I really need a friend to help me out with this".

The C.A.M.P system is mostly irrelevant and unnecessary too. There's not really any gameplay reason to have a camp other than "because it looks cool".

In terms of gameplay and RPG elements, the combat is just appaling, the perk system allows for no focus in play-style and the enemies are buggy, samey and don't feel challenging at all.

There are other problems with this game but at this point, you get the idea already anyway.

So who is this game for? If I had to give an answer, I'd say it's best for people who enjoy games like Rust but with no challenge whatsoever:
+ Pros: Is fun with friends, does have some kind of cool lore stuff buried somewhere in this mess of a game, the end game seems like it could be relatively fun
    - Cons: A LOT.

Fallout 76 represents a big disappointment and the lowest point of the series so far. Riddled with bugs, repetitive and dull gameplay, nonexistent story and outdated graphics, it fails as a both multiplayer and singleplayer experience for fans and newcomers alike.

Miracles do happen once in a while and No Man’s Sky proved that sometimes it is possible to get back on your feet even after a terrible failure. Right now though Fallout 76 is botched spectacularly on so many levels that even talking about this game is a waste of time. [01/2019, p.46]

An unfinished game with bifurcated identity and in an almost dysfunctional state. It's hard to build on a bad base, that will never change. Like the war. [Issue#292]
