Maybe i was lucky. i am sure the bugs will be corrected. The game play is mostly the same except for VATS. But VATS is not all that bad, just different. When exploring the game it felt like any Fallout game that i have played b4. I very much am enjoying the different era of the game, but i would really like to see more gouls and goul citys/towns/settlements, that is really the only thing i would like to see more of. I think the game really has room to grow and in its current form and is really fun. I love Fallout games and this is definately giving me more of what i love! Expand

The game has had a very poor and buggy launch which has undoubtedly negatively affected the reception of the game. Unfortunately, a lot of the comments from people online are from people who don't even own the game.

There are a couple of controversial design choices (such as no human NPCs) that have got people riled up before even trying the game out properly. The rest of the bad reviews are legitimate and due to technical errors and bugs that may make the game unplayable.

Regardless, I have avoided all of the media hype and trailers/reviews surrounding the game and decided to purchase it after looking at the synopsis a week after release. I thought it sounded intriguing and decided to try it out.

I personally have played the game for a few hours and I really enjoy it. There is a huge open world to explore and discover, the atmosphere of FO76 is fantastic for someone like me. I usually mod my previous FO titles (3,NV,4 etc) to be difficult and scary survival horror games i a Fallout universe.

FO 76 delivers the atmosphere; the loneliness, desolation and hostility of a post-nuclear hell-hole!
You need to make sure you have food, water and shelter and you genuinely feel like a Mad-Max, The Road or even Walking Dead character scavenging the ruins of the old world to try and survive.
When you finally meet up with another human player and end up working together and bonding through difficult challenges, the experience is just magical and unparalleled! If you aren't capable of experiencing a world yourself and need to be hand-held then you may not appreciate the design of the game in the way it is designed to be explored. Additionally, there is a big chance that you will suffer from awful game-breaking bugs that will totally destroy your ability to have fun with 76...

I played Fallout 4 twice the reason being I started with that installment of the series and the second time around was playing it understanding all the tools and ways to achieve victory using my own creativity. Fallout 76 follows suit but though there are many similarities between the games you have to use a different gaming strategy to get the most out of it. The first 10 levels can be very tough and most are tempted to quit, not enough water, food, and decent guns and ammo. You need a strategy, a creative one and I like that about the game. When you make a camp remember to not leave it unattended because some of the players have taken on the role of a Raider. I overcome this by keeping a small camp with the bare essentials and quickly packing it in its theft proof case before I leave, so in a sense, there are still Raiders in this game but they are players like you but with a different agenda. I think that in a way this makes it more real life don't invite strangers into your home kind of common sense.

I don't wear the same clothes every day, treat this game like a new outfit and you'll enjoy it very much.

It's pretty okay, and definitely the best "live service" type game since you can earn enough atoms for everything that comes out in the atom shop just by playing the game. No human npcs yet is a bit annoying, but no one's paid full price for this game since the first week have they?

The game is good, but attracted UNNECESSARY hate. And yes, the game is bugged, like most Bethesdas game, but do resist do to some modding despite the online status of it.
There aren't THAT many bugs (heck even less than the average bethesda game) but the game is bugged.
This game deserves a 7/10 ( or even a 76/100) , but the serious spam ( metacritic should try to introduce filters in such games ) make me give this game an 10.

Much better than people are giving it credit for -- I'd be willing to wager most giving it negative reviews haven't actually played the game.

I had no plans to give this game a chance, but a couple of my friends bought the game and I ended up diving in with them. The game is by no means perfect right now, but the foundation is solid and I think we'll see a lot of improvements to come.

There's been a certain allure to the game I didn't expect. Every day at work I've been itching to get back on to explore, build up my character, improve my camp, improve synergy with friends, collect new guns and outfits, etc. There's a lot of interesting places to discover and stories to listen to if you're willing to take the time. I feel like it's one of those games that if you just watch others play or read the reviews, you really wont understand the essence of the game.

If you're a fan of Fallout and like the idea of playing with others, I strongly recommend you give it a chance.

Additionally, the story and setting would be a million times better if they just rolled the in-universe clock back a little while the where all the humans were dying instead of dead. We have terminal entries and notes about all these cool apocalyptic events as the scorched expanded, and we don't get to be there. Instead we get to fight buggier, damage spongier alduin as the final boss.

Final score: 3/10 instead of 6/10.

    Orig review:

Fallout 76 is a good concept and has enjoyable core gameplay. However, as the opening days grew on the servers started acting funny and bugs and glitches became more common. Additionally, the day 1 patch that was promised never arrived (on PC): it's still version 1.0.0.6 like during the last of the beta.

Locations and quests tend to be hit and miss, but overall they're ok enough.

The economy and item storage limitations however hurt this game the most: you can neither store items nor sell them easily, as merchants have small, slow replenishment cap pools, and are linked in a handful of factions, and you can't barter either, and even when you buy something the merchant only has a fraction of what you paid with afterwords (about 1/4), so you can't even trade for your caps back.

These issues shouldn't be hard to fix and yet there's only been vague promises, and they ultimately relegate what could have been a 7-8/10 to a 6/10.

After sinking sixty something hours into the game, I can say it’s a good first attempt at an online multiplayer game. Yes, it still uses the Creation Engine but not the same one used for Fallout 4 or Skyrim due to the engine improvements such as all new rendering lighting and landscaping technology; that allows for sixteen times the detail, and yes you can visually see the difference between Fallout 76 and Fallout 4. Such as the glossiness on the golden strips on the Vault Suit that was not present in Fallout 4.

Now Fallout 76 isn’t the prettiest game released this year or this decade, but it is by far the prettiest Bethesda Game Studios Game released today.

Leveling Up in this game has been refined from Fallout 4’s perk chart, I especially like the fact that I can switch out my perk cards when I’m playing with my friends to allow for greater team play, however, I’m not so much of fan of the fact that your special stops increasing after reaching Level 50 but there are adding the ability allowing you to respec your characters special in latter update
    sometime after launch.

The Appalachia Wasteland is truly the biggest most diverse wasteland we’ve seen to date allowing players to capture some truly amazing screenshots. Yet due to the immense scale of the Appalachia Wasteland and lack of human NPC populating hubs, towns the world seems oddly empty but not completely empty due to the questing give robots found throughout the world such as Rose or the
other players exploring the world along with you.

The microtransactions in Fallout 76 aren’t an issue due to them literally throwing Atoms at you for playing the game and completing challenges. So what do buy with these microtransactions well it’s all cosmetic items that offer no gameplay advantages at all to the players of the game. These microtransactions are also paying for all the DLC the game will have post-launch allowing Bethesda Softworks to make all DLC free not splitting up the player base.

I myself haven’t participated in any PVP in Fallout 76 as of yet but have had some of my loot stolen.

The story isn’t the best story featured in a Bethesda Studio Game, but it isn’t too bad either. The endgame isn’t the worst nor the best but launching them nukes is pretty fun and challenging. When one is launched players have two minutes to leave the blast area, but one is fired most players come over to the edge of the blast radius to watch the nuke detonate. Don’t worry about players firing nukes every twenty minutes as Bethesda have thought about this every Tuesday the launch codes reset and need to be decrypted once again from a new word and different numbers, and players aren’t allowed to nuke the starting area.

Crafting has been reworked in Fallout 76 where players now need to find plans that allow players to build new gear giving you an edge over enemies that are just above your current level. Not only do you need to find plans you also need to find the resources to craft this new gear once you’ve learnt the plan, however, the stash limit is currently restricting my crafting progression slightly, but this issue is being addressed with an update sometime this month.

So all in all Fallout 76 isn’t a great Fallout game but is a good action-adventure game on your own but is a great action-adventure game when playing with friends.

I held out and waited for release. Release arrived. I woke in Vault 76 eager to get in the wasteland of west Virginia. Picked up some stuff left behind kindly by the overseer wherever he she was. Opened the vault door and there i was in the wasteland ready to get my first taste of radroach. Now the graphics are not oit of this world but it looked ok some places looked amazing (gtx 1070) so i was on max settings ive seen a lot of complaints that this is a terrible looking game. It isnt, but its not great either a few patches in maybe it will be a lot better. So as i was saying i started wandering the wasteland following the main quest which is ok for the most part until you realise the multiplayer element is pointless and the quests are so go here get this go there fetch this which is ok for a few missions but got to the point where i got a bit sick of it considering on some you had to travel great distance. The action/shooting part is tedious at times and the AI is quite dumb which i figured may improve a few patches in (yet to see) as i mentioned the multiplayer i did team with a couple of guys but we all seemed to be in the same pointless loop of not really needing eachother so after that i played solo. PVP which is the reason i was looking forward to 76 as oppose to being the difference to its previous games in the series was pointless nobody shoots anybody they all see no point due to the stupid mechanics. As a survival element game there is no reason for it to be so other than eating drinking. If your familiar with say ARK,Rust,Conan Exiles etc the elements like building, fighting npc, pvp, base building, teamwork in 76 the element is pointless. The game as a whole is ok not the worst ive played but a long way off being good and a long way from terrible maybe in 6 months it could be worth looking again after a few updates and a cheaper price. So after i played quite a goof while reached level 20 etc had a good run i decided to try my luck on a refund which to full credit to bethesda i received in full no hassle. So to finish if your a fallout fan this game is ok not great and is not half as bad as its made to sound by critics and rager fanboys its worth a look at a cheaper price but at full price £50 GBP its an overpriced ok game. The world Fallout 76 is installed in is huge and simply beautiful. The landscape and the main interest points (camps, bases, towns) are very well done with a lot of hidden stashes and secrets for you to find and loot. The hostile mobs that you find in the world can spawn on pre-coded events (quests) or you can force some to spawn (by annihilating everything with a nuke, it just works), needless to say, the way the mobs scale up to your level is perfectly fine, yet I still wish that some of them posed a bigger threat (Scorched are literally just training dummies for me at any point in the game). I also would've liked the Appalachian folklore beasts to be more unique to this world, rather than having them encountered quite often. They're still interesting to fight, Scorchbeasts being literally hell sometimes to take upon. The crafting and base building in this title are a total improvement over the same systems from FO4, although I still wish they'd have more in store for them. Most likely that wish will be done through future content patches, if any. So far basebuilding had a few breaking bugs that i've encountered but they've been seemingly fixed as of 22/11/2018. The game rewards exploration for sure, and also punishes digging in too deep in some situations. The quests in the game, although as much as I wished for them to be given or completed at human or sentient ghoul NPCs, are at a fine level. They're exactly what you'd expect from a survival game (which this title is, people tend to forget that FO76 is a survival game and not an RPG like the previous installments in the franchise, despite the way Bethesda tried to introduce some lore in the quests with no friendly NPCs around). The quests push you to explore, kill, loot and sometimes, even group up with people in order to face a big threat (group objectives are usually optional, really wish they weren't). For a survival game so far, it is what you'd expect, the survival mechanics (hunger, thirst etc) are well implemented. Now on to the bad parts. FO76 uses the Creation Engine, which is in a huge manner a refurbished Gamebryo engine (engine used for Bethesda games pre Skyrim launch) and it shows its age. There are a lot of bugs and glitches. I've encountered a lot game breaking bugs that just prevented me from doing something that I wanted (specifically in base building). Despite those bugs, I found something else to spend my time on while waiting for Bethesda to drop a patch to fix these problems. So far I can say i'm relatively happy that they've taken care of a few truly nasty game breaking ones, although seemingly ignoring the other minor bugs. The game has a no push to talk button, while being a survival game, which is unexplainable to be honest.
To summarize the ups and downs:
    Ups:
-Vast and huge world, great for exploration
-Lore, despite being introduced the way it is, has its moments a lot of times
-Crafting and building on point, wish they expand those systems in the future.
    -Survival mechanics work
-Combat system from FO4, still good
-Unique mobs, many dangerous, even while in power armor, some, completely training dummies
-Works good with friends that appreciate survival games with a small questing experience twist

    Downs:
-Bugthesda confirmed, many remain unfixed, probably will be like that forever.
    -Visual glitches occur very often.
-Outdated engine shows its age, game has a few optimization issues, not impossible to play at constant frames with a below average PC build.
-Lack of NPCs (sentient humanoids) is still unexplainable, there should have been at least a few NPC raiders somewhere. I cannot believe that out of all those people that came out of the vault none of them went totally rogue (game should have not been focused on the players being the only inhabitants of the vault, disregarding thus sentient NPCs, is what i'm trying to say).
-The game can feel dull at points if solo playing, due to how big the world is, there are a lot of open spaces with literally nothing on them.
-Servers seemingly need a lot of maintenance downtimes, despite not a lot of players being online on one server at a time ( ? - could be faulty engine that doesn't allow big server uptime, who knows, it really sucks when you got engaged in an activity and then you got a downtime of around 1 hour+ incoming in just a few mins).
    -No push to talk yet.
-A lot of items/objects used to disappear at launch, can't really confirm if they still do today, last time I've encountered something disappearing from my inventory is 3 days ago.
-Microtransactions (although purely cosmetic) in a game in this state, should not be a thing, at all. Pull an EA and add them later if you really want them Greedthesda.

Is the game worth 60 bucks as it is right now? I'd say yes and no. You really need to be the target audience of this game in order to get full value. 6/10, has potential if kept updated, like is NMS lately.

Had alot of fun with this game. (bought it for 30€)
Played arround 150 - 180 hrs. And ingame level 155 or so.
The last 20 hrs i only build the bases, cause there is not much to do when you did everything, Gameplay and Wold are amazing. -2 points cause endgame isnt rly there and the huge grind aspect for screws ans stuff only to repair gear. i had my fun wiht it, but i hope there

This game is a testimony, an example of how the masses can be influenced by the people with power (power of influence). In fact this is game is very far from being boring, its a fallout game that you can play with your friends! How on Earth that can be boring?
This game is Fallout, very close to the feeling of original 1 and 2 Fallouts.
All the major bugs and glithces were fixed ages ago, they keep tuning the balance and now with that awesome roadmap i think this could be the best Fallout game ever.

This game is only good with the following
    1) a good cooperative friend who enjoys the game
    2) stable internet
    3)some money
    4)a computer
That's all i know as a gamer its hard to find the first one so just don't play the game if you don't have friend.

I really dont understand why people hates this game how they hate, i have 190hr+ of gameplay and still loving this game, the open world really envolves you with a lot of details and places to explore and get items or kill beasts and things like that, bethesda still doing updates every week fixing bugs and server problems and improving/adding things to the game every time so lets play it!

This game was fun in the beginning already, even though it was flawed a bit by a rough start. Would have given a 5/10 before.

Now they really improved and gave an outlook to even more fun things to come in the future. My favourite game currently. Well done Bethesda.

It has its occasional technical issues, but overall the glitches are exaggerated. I’ve played for several months now and am still discovering new things. I’ll be honest here. The beginning of this game was awful. The lag, bugs crashing, all of it got to me at a point and I had dropped the game. Before dropping it, I had around 40 or so hours. The game itself was fun, when it dis what it was supposed to. When I dropped it, I didn’t drop it just because I didn’t find it fun, but rather for it to be updated and come back at a later date.

So, here we are now. I got back on once NW was released. I wasn’t super hyped for it, simply because I don’t like BR games that much. But this BR was different for me. It was actually fun! I put another 20 or so hours into this in the span of a day and half. It’s really fun to play, the people are not dicks and it actually feels possible to play.

One of my main gripes with Fo76 adventure mode before I dropped was the constant hit detection delay. I would shoot and NPC and it would take about 1 second for it to register. That has been fixed from what I tell and all the other bugs I’ve had issues with have been fixed.

The hearing of the new wastelanders update has really gotten me. That was the main turnpoint of me coming back to Fo76. I’m extremely excited for it to drop. It look like there will be a map expansion mabye, NPCs are coming back, new guns and armor, vault raids etc etc... It just looks so fun an I cant wait for it!

After putting another 40 or so hours into this game, I can safely say that this game is good now. The bugs that were really annoying were fixed, the new mode is fun, and the new DLC looks especially promising.

Fallout 76 represents a big disappointment and the lowest point of the series so far. Riddled with bugs, repetitive and dull gameplay, nonexistent story and outdated graphics, it fails as a both multiplayer and singleplayer experience for fans and newcomers alike.

Miracles do happen once in a while and No Man’s Sky proved that sometimes it is possible to get back on your feet even after a terrible failure. Right now though Fallout 76 is botched spectacularly on so many levels that even talking about this game is a waste of time. [01/2019, p.46]

An unfinished game with bifurcated identity and in an almost dysfunctional state. It's hard to build on a bad base, that will never change. Like the war. [Issue#292]
