Let's get one thing out of the way. This is not Fallout 5, nor does it try to be. Instead, Fallout 76 is a game of preferences. If what you want is a full RPG experience with populated towns, morality systems, and a whole lot of talking, then this isn't the game for you. 76 does away with those things to instead focus on the building, crafting, fighting, and exploring of Fallout 4. If, like me, you feel that story and characters get in the way of all the fun stuff, then this may be your perfect title because, oh boy, is there a lot of fun stuff.

The combat is the meat of the game, so let's talk about it first. The shooting and fighting in Fallout 4 was decent. 76 improves upon it in every way. Guns feel snappier and more accurate. Increased recoil gives them a great percussive feel, which is further accentuated by higher damage numbers. The days of putting a whole mag into an invincible ghoul are over. Gunplay is fast and tactical.

One significant change to the formula is movement speed. Everyone moves faster, from the player characters, to the super mutants, to the mole rats. It doesn't feel like you're the Flash or anything, but the movement has been significantly upgraded. This can be a blessing, as well as a curse. Faster movement speed means it's easier to run into a corner and get stuck while a horde of mutant dogs nibble on your privates. Situational awareness is essential, now more than ever.

The last notable change to combat is in encounter design. To facilitate the multiplayer aspect, the size of each encounter has been increased. Expect to fight 5+ enemies at any given time. Feral ghouls come at you in massive gangs of a dozen or more. The new Scorched enemies use melee and flanking gunmen to overwhelm you. Creatures are unpredictable and aggressive. The sheer number of enemies in the world makes for a challenging struggle to survive.

And it's a big world. Fallout 76 is the largest map for any Bethesda Fallout by a wide margin. It is separated into a few different regions, each with distinct topography. From chemical bleached barrens, to irradiated rivers, to a lush forest seemingly untouched by all the chaos, there's always something new to see.

Building and crafting are pretty much the same as before. You get perk cards to unlock new things as well as level up your character. Unlocked items can be crafted at the appropriate bench. Building at your portable C.A.M.P has been improved, but not much. Things snap together better, but it can still be a pain to make them do so. construction is competent, but is probably the weakest part of the game.

Now on to what everyone has been worried about, multiplayer. I'm happy to report there's little in the way of griefing, because there really isn't any reason to do so. You don't lose anything other than junk when you die, your personal stash can't be raided, and killing other players only puts a bounty over your head. Being a bad guy has no positive effects, which is honestly the best deterrent to griefing.

The game truly comes alive with other players around, be they friends or just randoms. I remember a time when I was fighting a group of super mutants and getting my posterior perforated, when a chorus of gunfire rang out from the west. A duo of players had heard the commotion, come to check it out, and lent a helping hand. After the fight, we met up in the center. There was no talking. They gave me a few stimpacks and a little ammo for my hunting rifle, then went on their way. Unless you have a gaggle of friends to run around with, these are the kinds of interactions you can expect, little spurts of cooperation that make for impressively memorable moments. Maybe that will change in the future, but for now, I can count the number of negative exchanges I've had on one hand.

So, where does that leave us? I'll admit the game does feel empty at times, but it's supposed to. This is the wild west. It's untamed, and unexplored. Taming and exploring is your job, and you do it with a gun and a Pip-boy. The sheer size and density of the map ensures there will be plenty of those two things to go around. If you're looking for a distilled adventure, with little to interrupt the action, then Fallout 76 is the right game for you.

The game it self is an interesting spin off and makes as much fun as Fallout 4 (yeah not as much as 2/3 or NV but still).
Just the engine drives me crazy don't understand how they can publish a game with such an outdated engine.
The game it self have as typical for Bethesda a lot of bugs and doesn't feel that polished as many other current games do. With a current gen gaming pc and a fast internet connection, it's not possible for me to play without lags.

Please don't cry about multiplayer its not a real multiplayer game. It´s also not the game of the year. But its still a Fallout and it still makes fun.

Good game, if you like Fallout 4 there is allot to discover and find here. There is a few things that need to be tweak & patched but at the core there is a good game here and worth buying. Ignore the review Bombs, i can tell that most haven't even played the game (i have about 30 into the game).

I play a lot of online/MMO games and have played all the Fallouts (the last ones heavy modded for survival).

After playing F76 for some time:
+ Due to the small player count and small, far away spawns It feels very immersive for an online game (I'm a roleplayer).
+ Was pretty stable for a new online title (one crash in 10+ hours on PC)
+ I like that it is an MMO and not a CO-OP. I like pick-up random groups and the chance to meet other random scavengers in ruins.
+ I like the open world base building. Have build some useful and fun things for new players close to the starter area.
+ If the shop will really only be for cosmetics and the DLC will really be free like they have promised, it will become good value for money in time.
+ The group area events are some of the most fun and original ones I have seen in MMOs.
+ I think they have found the perfect balance of survival elements. It's not a chore, but you have to keep it in mind and it might be punishing if you forget about it.
+ I'm not sure if like the perk card system, but it seems smart for on online game. It would be a bad idea in a single player game, but most online games introduce the option to respec your character, so a more flexible system build up from ground up seems sensible.

    - - The game is optimized poorly
    - - The AI is simply horrible. I would be happy with the poor AI from Fallout 4, but they obviously had to change something. And it's very buggy.
    - - No text chat, and the emotes are horrible.
    - Too much reused assets. I've played F4 for like 500+ hours and am really fed up with using the same pipe guns and revolvers.
    - It's the same with monsters. Yes, there are a lot of new ones, but it feels low effort , as I'm still bashing the same ghouls, molerats, and mutt dogs.
    - I hate the UI (like in 90% games that are developed for both consoles and PC)
    - The system for tracking quests in a team is a mess.
    - It feels like the gear progression is wrong for an online game. Games like this are supposed to keep people playing for hundreds of hours and players in F76 already have the high grade power armors with enough fusion cores to run them for a long long time.

+/- If Bethesda isn't lying, they will try to introduce "private" moddable servers in a year after sorting out all the core issues. This might change the game a lot (or it might be a useless mess).

All in all... I don't want it to change, I like most of the unique core concepts. I just want it to get much better at what it tries to do. And a better game overall in all the technical areas it fails now.

This game isn't a traditional Fallout game. It's a survival game set in the Fallout world! No one complains that games like ARK don't have NPCs or stories because that's the genre. And the complaints about it not being an RPG, well that's on the players. If you want to role play as a trader, raider, hero, etc. there's nothing stopping you.
It's really sad to see this trend of hating because it's the thing to do. It seems like most gamers think developers should be punished for trying something different. And if that thing isn't perfect from the moment it is released then it must be complete crap.
    My review-
This is a Bethesda game. Bethesda games have bugs. Most of the bugs eventually get fixed. The world is massive and, in the early areas, a little empty. As you progress through the game you'll find the areas more and more congested with enemies. It is a beautiful world, though it doesn't quite feel like it was destroyed in the war as much as feels like the area was just abandoned. The enemies are fun and a little challenging early on. The potential for role play is endless.

I'm a longtime fan of the franchise. I've played all of them except Brotherhood, and I started with them as a child. I've liked every one. I do enjoy 76 so far, but for slightly different reasons than the last games.

So far, Fallout games have been about exploration, marked and unmarked locations to discover and explore, a story to experience as you go through the world, side quests that usually have some humor or a bit of information about the larger world to add to our understanding of the setting. Well, 76 does have all of these things. 76 manages to do a lot of these things that we expect from a Fallout title. The thing it does not do, that (most) of the previous titles did have, is player choice in the narrative, and NPC interactions.

The difference between this and previous games is that all of the NPC's we would normally talk with, died shortly before the player shows up. We find the remains of battles and we find their bodies and such. The plot is discovering why and how, so we won't go into that, but the point is that the normal NPC interaction that people are used to in these games is missing. We do most of the lore discovery, and most of the storytelling, is done through notes and terminals and holotape recordings. Which is fine for learning about the world, and it's adequate for telling us information, and there have already been a few holotapes that were dramatic and conveyed emotion to me, but I understand the criticism that many people have. It's adequate for conveying storytelling, but it's not that interaction that people are used to. They want to talk to people. It's a bit unfortunate that a lot of the other reviews are very hard on the game and this seems to be the most common reason. Bethesda said from the start that they want to roll with the idea that every human you come across is another actual human player. This was the game's pitch, it's what made it unique. Someone at the company had this idea and they rolled with it. This was clear from the start, so a lot of these reviews that seem to be disappointed by the lack of NPC's is a bit perplexing.

It's also worth noting, on the lack of NPC issue, that there is more voice acting and recorded dialogue for this game than every other game combined. Look it up on google, it's a fact. So it's not that there just isn't any voice acting or things to learn from people. It's just that the people are all dead, and leaving their diaries for the player to discover. It's not actually all that much different than an NPC going on a longwinded story of his recent events. One of the criticisms of New Vegas is that NPC's will occasionally stand there and go on and on spilling information to the player. It's not that different in cases like this.

The positive aspects about the game are that it has many new enemy types, a map 4 times larger than 4's map, more voice acted recorded dialogue than the previous games, and the sidequests are just as involved as the previous games. The storytelling is done through discovery, so the player is more like an investigator after the fact, rather than in the middle of events, but the tone this sets up is unique and works.

It's missing a couple things though, so I wish I could give it an 8.5 instead of 9. The PC version should allow for DoF adjusting, widescreen support, Push To Talk, rendering distance options, and other quality-of-life options that PC players are used to that scale with the strength of their machine, and aren't uniform like on consoles.

Overall, the game offers many of the things we expect from Bethesda's Fallouts. Marked and unmarked locations to explore, some interesting quests, discovering lore about the setting, etc. It ends up being a very different experience than the other Fallouts, because you are an investigator after the events, but this is just a different tone of game. I've been enjoying it so far, and I understand that it's a very different tone than most other Fallout games. I think at the end of the day, whether you like it or not mostly hinges on whether or not you mind that you're coming by after the events and discovering what happened or if you want to be in the middle of them. This tone is a lot different and might not be for everyone.

I spent most my time in FO4 building settlements and in 76 i get to share it with my friends!

There is a story, but its not handed in a medium you're used to (NPCs). You discover the story through holotapes, terminals, notes that people before you have left and it really gives a sense a post apocalyptic to the game. It's a new type of storytelling for sure.

I would probably agree with everything he said, but because i actually played a fair bit and indulged myself into the game, i felt like i could disagree with a fair few of his points. Its a shame that everyone is hating on a game they havnt even tried. Im saying this due to making a post on the reddit and people commenting they think its the worst game, but have not even had any experience with the game

    Onto some things.

"there are no NPC's!". There are NPC's, there arent "human" NPC's as of yet. You still get quests, you get them off robots, holotapes or notes. That sounds boring right? Its the same on previous fallouts, just no humans to interact with. Thats where the multiplayer comes in. out of the 25+ hours ive played so far, ive came into contact with 1 griefer which wasnt the worst experience, and it was only say 2 minutes of my time gone. Most players are friendly, at least the ones ive come in contact with

"Stash box has little space!". Now, if you ever played Fallout 3, New Vegas and 4, you would be able to have 2 companions right? 2 companions in these games have roughly the same weight limit as that stash box.

"The game is buggy, a lot of latency". Ive dealt with worse games than this, compared to Fallout 4's Launch, this game is nothing. I also played with a friend from America, in South Korea using a VPN to Australia. My latency issue? the only thing i couldnt really do was melee on a server from the other side of the world, but my bullets would hit perfectly.

The way I see this game is its like Destiny, but open world with Events, decent quests and interesting monsters.

The game would be a 10 for me if it wasnt for its flaws

I dont find the game empty at all. If you find the game empty, its because you ignore every quest given, sit behind other fallout players and just observing them and not communicating as they take in all the fun and just want to find a reason to sook. Every corner or 2 there is some form of enemy unlike Fallout New Vegas (which is my favourite game, but just pointing out emptiness in games)

I have only dulged a little into the story, which so far sounds better than Fallout 4's story in comparison. side missions are fun and interesting and so are the events that you can join in anytime that its up.

My main issue is as a solo player (Ive spent probably 4/5's of my time playing with friends), its hard to get into, you may find someone using a workshop and you cant use it, or someone is at a vendor and you cant use it, or you go do a quest in an area and someone has already been there in the past 5 minutes and all there is are corpses. Those are my only issues with the game as a solo experience

For a multiplayer perspective, its a fantastic game
For a solo perspective, it has its flaws, but its still very enjoyable

Dont listen to the reviews going for 1 or 0. A majority of these people are **** on the game just because they heard its a bad game from 1 or 2 critics. On that note, I have ran into many players that say they are loving the experience. This community is a joke and would believe that 9/11 was CGI if they watched a few videos on it

I do not understand the bad reviews.
Fallout 76 is Fallout, and it isn't Fallout at the same time.

    It's just something new!!

Great game, don't listen to all the salty haters. The map is amazing, the story is huge and deep, and you can do it all with friends.

I'm had a lot of fun playing Fallout 76 in the first few months. It was a different kind of fun than that found in exclusively single-player Fallout experiences, but fun nonetheless. I teamed up with friends and worked on big quests and area events together, AND I'd retire to my C.A.M.P. and work on things alone at my own pace. All that said, I no longer play. My free time is too valuable and the game world doesn't hold my attention despite the things I have left to do. Fallout 76 wasn't a disaster, but it requires a level of forgiveness and patience I found it too hard to maintain.

Awesome game. Love the exploration. Love the storytelling. Love the character building. Love the world. Looking forward to playing this until Starfield or TES V comes out.

Fallout 76 represents a big disappointment and the lowest point of the series so far. Riddled with bugs, repetitive and dull gameplay, nonexistent story and outdated graphics, it fails as a both multiplayer and singleplayer experience for fans and newcomers alike.

Miracles do happen once in a while and No Man’s Sky proved that sometimes it is possible to get back on your feet even after a terrible failure. Right now though Fallout 76 is botched spectacularly on so many levels that even talking about this game is a waste of time. [01/2019, p.46]

An unfinished game with bifurcated identity and in an almost dysfunctional state. It's hard to build on a bad base, that will never change. Like the war. [Issue#292]
