Fallout 76 is the worst game in the history of game dev. And the worst - in terms of the opportunities that Bethesda has, and which they did not use and did not justify.

The game of the beginning of the 2000s is trying to sell today as a new, revolutionary product. In the game there are no normal animation, physics, graphics. Very scanty, monotonous filling of the world. Even maiden, indie games made by one person on the knee now look better and it is more interesting to play them.

Instead, you run across nothing but creatures. No occupied buildings, no little towns of people, just... nothing. This makes for a very lonely game. The creatures are nice, and the plot is just okay. Mix that with a boring game for my 3 star review. Expand

One of the best multiplayers this year. Nothing can compare to the fun i've had playing this game and with friends makes it a thousand times better (unlike most toxic fallout fans). This is a true fallout game and i've been playing fallout since the 1998, yes it might be different but what's the fun in playing the same thing over and over again, grow up.

To be honest guys, this game should be a free to play beta. Buggy, boring and runs like crap. I have a high end system and you can't even turn off Depth of field or Motion blurr, mean come on! I don't believe in giving a game a zero. I mean a zero basically means there is no game. So a 3 is about where this game is at the moment. Save your money and wait for this hot mess to get fixed.

This game is missing what makes Fallout a standout series. Was very disappointed by the lack of any real story or NPCs. Graphics were fine but just felt like another generic survival multiplayer which there are already plenty of.

They made it more of a shooter and added inconsequential building of settlements with a **** story. The music was great....all 5 songs. Spend some effin money and time and make a good game! This was the biggest slap in the face to fans I have ever seen. I've had it with the platform itself. It is no longer fun and quirky, it's outdated and limiting. I'm sick of power armour, mutants blah blah blah....go FORWARD in time. What a novel concept! Have technological advances, the establishment of regional governments with choices. The game is an empty broken shell of Fallout 4 - dated graphics (dated even by 2008 standards), astonishing bugs, and worst of all - no story, no purpose, no reason to play. The game doesn't even feel like a new game - it feels like someone tried to create a mod to Fallout 4 and abandoned the idea after 30 minutes of trying.

The game is a laughingstock! It's a 60$ online DLC to Fallout 4. It's buggy ( as always for a Bethesda game), it's boring, it's ugly (I'm not a grafics guy but compared to current releases, heck even last gen, it looks bad), it's a cash grab. No NPC's ABSOLUTELY hurts the game. To me, the characters are what made Fallout, Fallout. In this game, the world doesn't feel alive, despite all the other players running around. There are no characters to talk to, to hear stories from. No humans to give you quests that have an actual meaning to them. All quests in this game are given by robots, which takes away the feeling that you are doing the quest to help a person. All the quests are repetitive fetch quests or escort missions. All in all, this game is a huge letdown that feels very empty and incomplete. I do not recommend this game until Bethesda adds mod support and private servers that allow you to up the player count to at least 64. Then, maybe, there will be some possibility for roleplay, which may or may not make the experience any better. Expand

A truly disappointing entry into the fallout series. Bethesda misread their formula and added all of the wrong ingredients. While the idea of a multiplayer fallout game initially intrigued me quite a bit, there is just far too much wrong with this game to give it any kind of endorsement.

A truly disappointing entry into the fallout series. Bethesda misread their formula and added all of the wrong ingredients. While the idea of a multiplayer fallout game initially intrigued me quite a bit, there is just far too much wrong with this game to give it any kind of endorsement.

Multiplayer – The multiplayer aspect of this game almost feels like an afterthought with how bad it is. Bethesda usually nails single player games but their formula does not adopt very well to the multiplayer stage. The game tries to straddle the line between single-player and multi-player without really committing to either. This ends up one of the biggest issues with the game as it was marketed specifically as a multiplayer fallout, so when one of the biggest features falls flat, it really impacts the game across the board. Other players basically have no reason to interact with you at any point. PvP combat with other players is a joke, with no consequence and no real sense of danger from seeing other players. Someone can walk right up to you and empty an entire magazine into you for little to no damage, something easily ignored even in the middle of combat. Questing with others is also pointless as every member of the party needs to separately complete each objective without the option to share any sort of progress. I can see what Bethesda was shooting for when they attempted to make this multiplayer instead of focusing on single player but they clearly missed the mark.

Combat – Combat feels sluggish and unresponsive, which is only made worse by the neutered VATS system. Without the ability to use VATS in any meaningful way, Fallout 76 has to rely on its shooter mechanics which fall noticeably short of the bar set by other games. Bullets often seem more like nerf darts and melee can be like wading through syrup at times.

Perks – The perk system now feels exactly like a loot box, which I hope is just an accident on Bethesda’s part. Rather than having any sort of control over how your character specializes, the random nature of the new perk system basically forces players to just cross their fingers and hope that they get a somewhat decent collection of perk cards. Choice is almost completely ignored until much later levels where the player will have eventually acquired the majority of the perk cards.

Crafting – Crafting also feels largely neutered and useless. With many weapon customization options seemingly missing from the game and no support coming from the community any time soon, this feels like a clear step backwards for no reason. Bethesda already had a working system in fallout 4 that they could and should have improved upon rather than dropping the ball as they have.

Exploration/Questing – While the map does look big at a glance, the world feels strangely empty due to the lack of NPC hubs and quest givers. It feels like quite a few assets were taken directly from Fallout 4 as the world seems almost too familiar at times. Most quests devolve rather quickly into fetch quests or kill quests which is a disappointing direction for the franchise. Some of the new locations do look impressive but the world itself only looks good the first few times through an area, after that they rapidly grow monotonous as the same enemies spawn each time you wander nearby. Questing lacks any sort of mystery as the outcome of most quests in known right from the start.

Micro Transactions –One of the most polished aspects of the game seems to be the Atom shop. This is just the next poor choice in a series of bad decisions made by Bethesda regarding monetization. Given their most recent failures with the monetization of mods and the failure that was the creation club in Skyrim and Fallout 4, I can’t say I’m surprised to see them try this again, although it is disappointing to see them resort to this level of greed. What content is present in the shop feels like a joke with how simple it is and that’s not even factoring in the heinous prices attached.

I feel that Bethesda missed the mark pretty much across the board with this entry into the Fallout franchise. Their excessive focus on wringing more money out of their players is starting to become an irritating trend and the lack of work put into this game is almost a slap in the face for their dedicated fans. It feels more like the Bethesda accountant made all the creative decisions behind this game which is a shame considering how well received their other titles have been. They had a winning formula they outright ignored in what seems like a quick cash grab. I understand that not everyone will agree with what I’ve written, but I’ve played quite a few Bethesda games now, and this feels like a serious departure from their past successes.

This game is neither terrible enough to deserve a 0, nor is it anywhere near good enough to deserve a 10.

Put simply, it's Fallout 4 in a far-less apocalyptic setting, where you have no relationship of any kind with in-world characters. It's basically the experience you get when you wander ruins in FO4, which is fine in moderation, but it gets really old when it's the only experience
This game is neither terrible enough to deserve a 0, nor is it anywhere near good enough to deserve a 10.

Put simply, it's Fallout 4 in a far-less apocalyptic setting, where you have no relationship of any kind with in-world characters. It's basically the experience you get when you wander ruins in FO4, which is fine in moderation, but it gets really old when it's the only experience available.

Everything is holotapes, fetch quests, killing anonymous NPCs, and finding people's corpses. Everything.

Worse, the tech in the game is barely upgraded from Fallout 4, which is a serious problem when you consider that Fallout 4 itself was technologically dated, not to mention very buggy.

Worse still, most of the well-known bugs in Fallout 4 persist in this brand new game, except this time, we can't mod them out when Bethesda is too lazy to do it themselves.

Worst of all, many of these bugs blend in with an extremely-naive server/client architecture that will see people exploiting the game, cheating and griefing to their heart's contents, because almost no forethought seems to have been put into the idea that the client is enemy territory and you must not trust anything coming from it. Instead, almost all game state appears to be done client-side and synchronized periodically with the server via "checkpoints", which appear simply to be savegames sent to the server instead of the hard drive.

This game is a horrendous mess in terms of technology, and the hubris of Bethesda in thinking they could push out yet another barely-modded version of their engine into an ONLINE MULTIPLAYER space without having to put actual work into it is just mind-boggling to me. That's all to say nothing of their stubborn refusal to admit that PC players don't all have 16:9 1080p displays.

Speaking of multiplayer, the ludicrous choice to ship on PC with always-on voice chat, rather than push-to-talk, is a staggeringly-bad idea. Unlike console players, a lot of PC players use built-in mics, not clever directional mics on their headset that live two inches from the player's mouth, so you'll be walking around your wasteland hearing people eat, argue, watch TV, constantly clack their mechanical keyboards, etc., and it will utterly ruin your immersion.

Also speaking of multiplayer, the PvP has been utterly gutted. For me, a PvE fan, it's not a big deal, but if you're a PvP fan, save your money, it's just going to be frustrating and boring. The game should have shipped with a per-character flag, set during creation, that would shuffle you to one or the other set of servers, each with either a PvE ruleset or a PvP ruleset. This attempt to force the two together is totally built out of fail.

Bethesda's response to almost all criticism is stubborn refusal to listen. There's a reddit thread where they "respond" to our "beta" feedback, requests, and criticism and it's almost entirely "yeah, we hear ya, but nah." The game's first patch, which was the full size of the original game by the way, has almost nothing worthy of mention.

Oh, and lest I forget: the balance is all over the place. Sometimes, you can fight an enemy twice your level and it's a pushover, and sometimes you're the pushover fighting something your own level. I really feel like the game simply wasn't finished and they shipped it anyway. Given how short the "beta' was, I feel very strongly this was the case.

The only upside here is that there's a little bit of Fallout lore to be discovered, and if you're a Fallout fan, then you want to discover that lore. Mind you, a lot of it seems to be convenient retcons and/or riddled with continuity errors that are just blatantly inappropriate for the time frame and location in the universe. Still, there's some fun to be had discovering the minimal story in the main quest and I'm okay with doing that.

So yeah, it's a 4 from me. If you're a fan, get it some time if it's on deep sale and play the main quest for the lore. And hope that by then they've fixed the bugs. But it's Bethesda, and their track record of fixing bugs is almost non-existent, so... good luck with that.

Bethesda should have simply made a co-op version of the original Fallout 4. That's what people actually wanted and asked for. Not this.
