I’d like to call myself a fan of Bethesda studios. To make it clear: my gaming experience in the Fallout series starts from Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and in TES – from Oblivion (I got my first PC at the time of release of the last one). To make it clear: my gaming experience in the Fallout series starts from Fallout 3 and New Vegas, and in TES – from Oblivion (I got my first PC at the time of release of the last one). I’m not a die-hard fan, but from these days I completed each game from the both of the series thoroughly, with the time passing and modding resources growing and a new ways of playthrough appearing. Skyrim turns 7 years this November and I’m installing it on my PC once in a half of a year from the moment of its release, load with ton of mods and go on exploring again. Fallout 4 is on my hard drive from the day of release. There is no need to discuss other games in that review, but I want to mention my high appreciation of the games from the Dishonored, Doom, Prey and Wolfenstein series, released by the departments of your company.

I’d like to call myself a fan of Bethesda studios. I mean, among the other studios you create a worlds that can engage a gamer for years. It’s an incredible work. I’m studying gamedev now and I know what I’m talking about. By the way I started to learn it also due to my childhood experiences taken in games including the works of yours. And furthermore, these worlds I mentioned allow gamer to build up his own unique experience using mods. This extends a living cycle and replayability of games a lot. But we have a thing there.

You know it yourself about the bugs, glitches and gameplay problems of beta version, about the easiness of cheating, about lore, about the paper discs, about uninstalling the game, etc. I see no reason to write about it all, the other users and journalists done that for me already. All of these things could be forgiven and they would forgive.

What is ruining the general impression of the game is total unoriginality and the fact that the game itself is not finished (even in the context of open beta version). It’s obvious that the game is always a profit-oriented product, but this time the profit looks like the only reason to make a game. You can see an indifference to the final quality of a product in many aspects such as animations, questing, fractions, crafting, graphics, PvP interaction (more on this later). You did a great job, but I’m sure you know it – to make a game on a quality level of your previous releases you must have done a 10 times better. Now it looks like Fallout 4 with a great fan-made multiplayer mode. You know exactly why – the game uses a huge percent of content and code directly from Fallout 4, that had its own visual and gameplay style after all. That is not a problem. The problem is that the remaining part of content made without the proper effort. I’d undoubtedly support a small team of modders made such mod for a single player game. This quality would be an unbelievable success. But not for Bethesda level of studios.

The second problem is uncomplicated, absolutely non-challenging PvP and survival in multiplayer game set in a post-apocalyptic world.

In this case the statement about support for mods sounded like an avoiding the responsibility for an incomplete final product. Something like “modders will improve, we provide the ground”. For now, after all the waves of hateful reviews, you probably see that it doesn’t work that way.

Due to a very high target you had to hit I evaluate your work strictly comparing it with previous experience. I tried my best with beta, sessions of which took place in the dead of night in my country. And after participating I have to note with my regret that your decisions taken this time are wrong.

Thanks for the beta. Now I assure that there is no sense in buying the game for now, until the serious update and improvement releases. Will these improvements be made by the studio or implemented by modders – time will show, but this game have to change greatly.

I’d like to call myself a fan of Bethesda studios. But now I can’t.

I'm not going to give this game a 0 out of spite like others, but I'm also not going to sit here and pretend like this game has no glaring problems. I've experienced broken quests, a-posing enemies sliding around on the ground, de-buffs from items that can't be cured, very poor hit-box registration and unresponsive combat, insane performance issues, and many more bugs that were present in the beta, and still made it into the final release. There are no NPC's, no dialogue, and no choice. Instead, you discover the dead bodies of NPC's and you have to listen to holo tapes that provide no immersion and seem ramble on for ages. You can hear people speaking to you, and quest objectives telling you to "meet the mayor" or something along those lines, only to reach this person and realize its actually a robot or a giant computer terminal. It results in a dead, boring world that sadly has no life to it. If I were to go into hardcore fan mode, I could complain about the lore established by previous titles, and how this game absolutely shatters everything that has already been set in place. As a positive note, I do have fun playing with my friends. Interacting with each other to fight a group of enemies or just exploring the world can be fun, but after a while it just isn't enough to keep me playing. I have given this game 25 hours minimum, to ensure I have seen and done as much as possible, the last thing I want is to create a lackluster negative review based out of spite. I can admire Bethesda's interest to push the series into a new direction to offer something fresh, but sadly this risk was not worth it. A return to normal single player RPG stories would be a much welcomed return in my book. Expand

Fallout 76 at its core is a game designed in a similar fashion to that of Fallout 4; split between too many directions and attempting to cater to too many different groups that it fails at everything it does.

Fallout 76 utilizes an aging engine, which in and of itself is actually a very good engine, but one that isn't kept up to the recent gaming market standards, nor one that is utilized to even a fraction of its potential. This is evident by the numerous mods that outstrip the vanilla product that are produced by unpaid, [at times] hobbyists without the resources of a massive business at their back.

Fallout 76 attempts to appease both PvE and PvP players using a failed system that in the end only detriments both groups. Throw in the poor shooter mechanics, framerate/graphics issues, server issues and numerous bugs and you're left with simply a poor gameplay experience.

Furthermore, Bethesda's attempt at creating any meaningful story once again falls quite short in a world devoid of human NPCs, adequate quest systems or progress. The world and story are poorly crafted as is, hidden behind the logs of newly deceased West Virginia residents rather than a living, breathing world, but take into account the multiplayer nature and you're hard pressed to enjoy a narrative with others talking over audio logs.

All in all, if you're looking for a proper Fallout entry (by that I mean Fallout 1, 2, 3, Tactics and NV), then you're out of luck here. If you're looking for a poor attempt at a console port and Fallout 4 multiplayer devoid of anything of substance, then this entry is for you. This of course is subject to change in a year or two with the addition of private servers, mods and bug fixes, but this hinges on the fact that Bethesda actually cares to fix their game's issues which doesn't seem likely given that these core issues were in place three years ago with Fallout 4 and the contention of the game's criticism.

Lastly, Fallout 76 is of course a Bethesda game riddled with Bethesda bugs tied to an engine that's been modified and remains unfixed with the same bugs present since Morrowind. One can hope the numerous bugs will be patched, however, given that Bethesda hasn't cared to do so in several game releases (Oblivion, Fallout 3, New Vegas, Skyrim, Fallout 4, Fallout 76), this doesn't seem to be a good hope.

Overall I've given this game a 4/10 due to subpar and poor visuals, performance, narrative, quests, world building, gameplay and bugs. Visuals, performance and bugs are fixable which would give this game (IMO) a 7/10. This is, I believe, generous considering the fact that this is an entry in a once renowned, beloved and masterpiece RPG series: Fallout. If one were to look at this game from a Fallout perspective, then this game would score far lower in my mind considering its inability to remain true to the tenants, lore and core that is Fallout.

Fallout 76 is a game that attempts to be something different from its predecessors. Unfortunately, that leads to 'loss of identity' and 'more technical difficulties'.

    The Outstanding:
    * The world is massive and active effort is put in to diversify each environment. [10/10]

    The Good:
    * You can hang with friends and goof around wearing a pink dress! [8/10]
    * The visuals and the scenery are at times really pleasant. [7/10]
    * 'Enemy variety' is more than any other previous entry. [6/10]

    The Bad:
    * Introduction of microtransactions through 'Atom Shop'. [4/10]
    * The game has those typical Bethesda bugs, and these are compounded by Bethesda venturing into the online world for the first time. [3/10]
    * Some basic obvious features are missing at launch; i.e. push-to-talk button, FOV settings, key-binding issues. [2/10]
    * Shooting mechanics are not the best. As in, if you are an FPS player, you'll find this to be very very average. [4/10]
    * Most quests (40 hours in) are "Start➡Locate➡Shoot➡Loot" and based on who you are, that can get boring early on. [2/10]
    * No actual incentive for PvPing other than 'wanting to'. [2/10]
    * A specific PvP style that requires following an 'honor system'! And can be exploited in different ways. For example:
Player A attacks B. B takes very little damage. B puts on the best gear and weapon and almost one-shots player A. [2/10]
    * Lack of general polish. Presumably due to improper or limited testing. Example: Long holotapes (5-6 minute audio tapes) that you need to listen to without getting disturbed. They surely hadn't tested this in a multiplayer environment.) [3/10]

The Ugly (things that would infuriate fans)
    * The game uses Creation Engine, which seems inherently flawed for an 'online' coop game. Example: FPS is tied to your in-game speed. [1/10]
    * Some issues and bugs that existed in the past 2 installments and were reported ad nauseam and even made news, are still present in this game. [1/10]
    * No human NPCs. This changes the DNA of this Fallout game drastically, if not eliminate it completely. [0/10]
    * Lack of 'mods' which is one of the main attractions of any Fallout game. Obviously 'mods' can't be introduced to public servers. But "there won't be any mod-supported custom servers until November 2019 at the soonest" based on Pete Hines, vice president of Bethesda. [0/10]

    Rating Average: 3.5

    Summary
Bethesda has tried something new here. Regardless of their intention, they have created a product that focuses on something that is not their strong suit.
To bring up a comparison; imagine a game like Destiny but without the superb shooting and without any NPCs, but with a bigger map. That is Fallout 76 for you.

Also Story: So lala...

My first impression of Fallout 76 were unintelligible background sounds of another player while I tried to create my character. It's a pretty bizarre feeling when you try to immerse yourself in a world of long awaited game but the game doesn't allow you to.
From exiting uninspired vault 76 to late high level areas of the map, game falls short in presentation, atmosphere and most sadly gameplay. Yes, the exploration is still there, and in most basic way it still feels like a Fallout, but all of the other aspects are disturbingly lacking.
The story feels gutted and 80% of the quests are fetch quests or killing mobs in a location. In time it becomes obvious that despite the setting, you're doing the same two-three things over and over again, and it becomes dull and repetitive. Without npc's the world feels empty and generic and your journey in it feels the same - pointless and insignificant. Logs and quest goals that read about people you'll never see become annoying in time, and you, without a hitch predict that in the end of it all you'll find a robot or a dead body, There are few good quest, but they only remind you how dull are all of the rest and what possibilities this game could have.
Playing with friends mostly solves this problem, but not the rest. That is if you are relatively same level and didn't already finished quest that your buddy didn't. If you're in the same area of the map have comparatively same playing time. It's fun to run into a boss monster in the woods and have a long fight together just to find that your reward is level locked, your guns and armor are broken and you ran out of stimpacs.
Managing your inventory is a chore. You'll find yourself building your camp so often to throw all unusable high level stuff in to the box that have a limit that will force you to question yourself what do you hold in it except materials that you desperately need to repair your gear and craft ammo for the guns that you have to use, not want to use. Selling all this stuff is pointless, because trading in this game is useless - you get 12 caps most for some rare loot - the same you spend on fast travelling to the other area of the map. Disassembling your gear is pointless too because you can't build anything useful without perks which forces you to the same character build that everyone else have, so in the end you just throw your loot away, searching for the particular things, again not because you want to, but because you need to.
You don't need to build your base, because nothing interesting happens near your base, you just take your base with you, because of a stash. You want to create a fun character build? Well, you need more inventory space and loot from behind locked containers too, so that's that. You want to fight interesting enemy? You'll fight generic 5 types of mobs that spawn from the ground near you and bosses that glitch out on the level design, for the loot that you don't need or can't use. In the end game progresses from sandbox tutorial to repetitive grind without a purpose.
Is it fun for you? I don't know, but it weren't fun for me. But the saddest part is not that this game has dull mechanics, nonexistent story and an empty world, it's that this is a Fallout game. More than other this game is a disappointment. Playing this game I thought about what this game could be and never will be, and it makes me sad. Not angry, just sad. This is a one sad game.

p.s. And yes, it's glitchy, buggy mess with broken quests, awful frame drops and mind blowing spec requirements for what this game offers.

The Graphics are just a tiny little bit better than Fallout 4, so someone, who doesn't know the difference, could mistake it for Fallout 4.

The Performance is mediocre at best. More than a few times i had freezes that lasted 1-2 seconds, which weren't game breaking but still very annoying and i think the problem is on Bethesda´s side, because the friend i was playing with, has a better pc than me and he also got those freezes. And even without them it always felt "rough" and "choppy", if that makes sense. One "good" Thing is, apart from the first loading screen, when you join a server (which takes ages) the loading times where ok.

The gameplay is pretty much the same as in Fallout 4. V.A.T.S. has changed, because you can't freeze or slow down time in an online game. Now its just "press a button when the percentage is high enough". You can still target different body parts, but because the time doesn't slow down, you have hardly any time to choose properly and so i just shot normally, which is also not precise. So many times I had an enemy in my crosshair and the shot would miss.

The building aspect isn't thought out well. The controls feel a bit better in comparison to Fallout 4, but the whole system is buggy as hell. You now have a camp, that you can pull out of your pocket via pip-boy and theoretically you can place it everywhere except for existing locations. The problem is, that if you log out and come back the next day or so, your camp could be gone. Because when you log on to a server and someone else put his camp on or around the location of your camp, your camp is gone. Everything you built should be stored, but that doesn't work. My builds ended up in pieces in the "stored"-tab instead of one House and that happened even after Bethesda fixed it allegedly. Some stuff even disappeared completely and even if, by some miracle, my build was stored as one, i couldn't built it on the same spot, because the placing of stuff is still as sensitive and restricted as in Fallout 4, if not even worse.

And the biggest problem for me is the story. Or more precisely, the lack of it. You still get quests, of course, but now you get them from robots with no personality other than being a robot or , sometimes, when you're just near the area of a quest. Most of the quests are simple "go there and do that"-tasks without a big story behind them. The environmental storytelling is still there, but i feel like even that is not as good as in other Fallout games. Now you find a lot (and i mean a LOT) of notes and audio logs, that tell the story. But while you listen to one audio log you find 3 more and when you pick up audio logs from dead bodies or out of containers, the current tape you listening to, stops automatically for the new tape to play. And there is no way to play an audio log from where you left off. you have to listen from the beginning. With Tapes, that can last a few minutes, this is so annoying. And because this is an online game, you cant pause to focus on a tape. So while you listen to it, you have to keep fighting enemies and talk with other players. Maybe someone with perfect multitasking can do it, but im not that one.

And of course there are the typical bugs and problems, that come with a Bethesda game. I myself was lucky enough to not get a game breaking bug. But the good old ones like physics freaking out, enemies in T-position, audio cut-offs when a "npc" is talking, there still here plus some new ones that are online-only. For one Quest i needed to kill an enemy, but the problem was, that other players had already killed this enemy and it didn't respawn! So i had to switch servers several times (which meant i had to wait every time through the long loading screen) just to find him dead again and again until i found a server, where i was the first to get to the enemy. This is not acceptable for an online game!

Fallout 76 is just a copy-paste job to make some more money from the Fallout Franchise. Its not thought through well and it just feels like Fallout 4: Online. With Fallout 4 i said "Its a good game, but not a good Fallout game" With Fallout 76 i can't even say this. Maybe, if Bethesda keeps patching and improving it, the game could become OK and playable. But for now i'm gonna treat it like a certain Indiana Jones movie about some aliens, that never existed and fill my fallout needs with Fallout 2!

It is a Fallout themed sepulchre filled with dead mans bones. Save yourself the grief & pretend this Fallout installment doesn't exist.

I've played every Bethesda game and completed most of them 100% while putting in hundreds of hours (including (fo4) , but not this one. It's pathetic that even after weeks of Beta tests there have been no fixes made.

I never thought I'd see them make something more embarrassing than the horse armour debacle, but here we are. We've all put up with countless bugs etc in previous games

Doesn't fix any vsync and physics issues from the previous entry. Community made fixes were available but can't be made in this online version of the game.

It could be a fun game if the developers knew how to separate physics from framerate like every other game developer in the last 15 years. But as of now it's just not an acceptable experience for 60 dollars.

I used to love Bethesda games, but ... OMG. This is travesty. Ugly as hell (old engine), nothing to do, no story, nothing fun, BORING. We are not talking about waste of time boring - we are talking about torturing yourself boring. Even if you are a fanboy like I used to be. Try to think how bad it can be - its worse than that.

Outdated, unfinished, bugged, microtransactions, lazy scenario, no npc, soundtrack is the copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of some previous fallout soundtrack.

If this was a mod made by the community, given for free, i probably would enjoy it tho. But it's not. It's a game made by one of the biggest studio in the world, it cost 60€, this is not acceptable. when playing this game, I

I bought this game in good nature and like many others, was sorely let down.
It's an aged engine cash-grab, nothing more.
The reason why they didn't release this game on Steam: Refunds.

Fallout 76 is a disgrace of a fallout game. Even if you take fallout out of the title you still get a bland and boring game. If this the trend bethesda softworks is going to follow then I have no problem seeing them get completely shut down. Online only? No human NPCs?
No proper main story or side quests? This is not fallout, honestly at this point this is an unethical business practice

As a huge fan of the Fallout series, it has pained me to see it fall so low. This game is what happens when a company goes for a pure cash grab. They stripped away every aspect of Fallout that made it a special franchise, and left it an empty husk.

It has a boring, empty world. They are using an outdated engine, and they can't seem to bother fixing bugs that have persisted for years.

The game is stuffed with micro-transactions to make a quick buck. There are no human NPCs; only robots. They spat in the face of lore that has been established for years.

This game doesn't deserve the title of "Fallout." It is a prime example of the corporate greed that plagues gaming today. It doesn't deserve your money.

    Shameful garbage. Just trash.

First, I didn't play this game. I couldn't. I bought it for my kid, and I thought I'd try it when she was out with her friends. I play Fallout 4 a lot, so it's not like I'm starting from zero. So I created a character - which took about 20 minutes to get perfect - and then the selfie thing was a mess (you need to take a profile selfie). After about

Fallout 76 represents a big disappointment and the lowest point of the series so far. Riddled with bugs, repetitive and dull gameplay, nonexistent story and outdated graphics, it fails as a both multiplayer and singleplayer experience for fans and newcomers alike.

Miracles do happen once in a while and No Man’s Sky proved that sometimes it is possible to get back on your feet even after a terrible failure. Right now though Fallout 76 is botched spectacularly on so many levels that even talking about this game is a waste of time. [01/2019, p.46]

An unfinished game with bifurcated identity and in an almost dysfunctional state. It's hard to build on a bad base, that will never change. Like the war. [Issue#292]
