Exoprimal

As a familiar-looking hero shooter with dinosaurs added in, Exoprimal is much bolder than it may initially seem. This is a game that I envision many people will play and enjoy for a few hours, feel like they’ve gotten their fill of it, and then move on to something else. But that will be an incredible shame because they’ll never experience Exoprimal’s best content, which is hidden in the back half of its bonkers sci-fi story, and features some of the most surprising and innovative gameplay moments I’ve experienced in a team-based multiplayer game in a long time. I wish it took a little less time to get to those moments, as repetition starts to creep in before they hit, but Exoprimal’s unique PvPvE formula is impeccably designed, features fun and distinct exosuits regardless of what role you play, and is a breath of fresh air in the multiplayer hero shooter genre.

Exoprimal is a relaxed cooperative PvE action that generates a lot of momentum through indirect competition with an opposing team. Especially when you coordinate with up to four friends, it's surprisingly entertaining - much more entertaining than the pictures and videos with thousands of dinosaurs in front of rather functional backdrops would suggest.

I can’t deny the fun factor of Exoprimal, but for this to be a great game, they need to address the shortcomings of their cross-play. So here’s the TLDR, would I pay sixty dollars for Exoprimal? No… It’s a forty-dollar game at best right now. If you don’t have Xbox Game Pass, Personally, I would wait for it to go on sale.

Exoprimal has some indefinable quality that makes me believe it will be around for a good long while and I couldn’t be happier. The combination of inventive exosuits, tight combat and a bonkers concept does more than enough to paper over a myriad of issues that would normally put me off.

As we said in our initial preview, there's potential in Exoprimal. The basic mechanic of blasting away dinosaurs is absolutely fun, and the presence of competent bots filling in for missing humans ensures that no one is going to get shortchanged in a bout. There are enough goals in a match that there's no guarantee about what you'll get to play, and that keeps things fresh enough if you can progress through levels at a good clip. At the same time, the lack of a campaign mode hurts when it feels like the story is better served by having one, even if it only mimics Dinosaur Hunt with bots. Since this is an online-only game, it has a definitive shelf life unless Capcom can patch in something to help prevent the game from being obsolete if the servers ever get pulled. The game is fun now, and its presence on Xbox Game Pass ensures that subscribers can give it a shot before committing to a purchase, but it'll be interesting to see if the population holds up by the time the second season rolls around.

Influenced by the legendary Dino Crisis franchise, Exoprimal is a surprisingly fun and engaging game. Despite some repetitive missions and an occasionally unstable connection, I can safely say that Exoprimal is one of the most enjoyable titles in 2023.

Exoprimal is a multiplayer shooter with bags of potential. A good round has all the thrills of Overwatch’s PvP wrapped up with the brain-massaging mayhem of Earth Defense Force or Dynasty Warriors, but it’s so slow about getting you invested that some players might simply never get there.

Exoprimal has a lot of fun dino-blasting to be had, but you’ll need to get past some truly questionable barriers to get to that point.

While its basics are solid, and its story surprisingly interesting, Exoprimal leaves something to be desired. With a limited amount of PvP and PvE missions, and average maps, the excellent visual and combat design of the Exosuits and the occasional surprise raid mission are not enough to keep the whole experience engaging after a dozen or so hours. Taking down hordes of dinosaurs can be fun, but the game definitely needed something more to be a must-have, especially at its price tag.

Exoprimal has fantastic PvE content and an intriguing story, but its focus on competitive modes hurts its attractiveness to newcomers, and its lack of offline capabilities might eventually kill the game entirely. It has the potential to be so much more, but such a high-profile title shouldn't have to rely on potential alone. Capcom should take steps to ensure more players can enjoy Exoprimal to its fullest — and to ensure all players won't be left without a game to enjoy after its services end.

The beginnings of a PvPvE cult hit. Extinct animal slaughter is fundamentally fun, but the foundations are sparse.

Exoprimal is not a bad game, it has good characters, it has a good concept, it looks beautiful. But still, it's not a game I can recommend. The title is available via Game Pass for Xbox Series X | S consoles and also on Game Pass PC. In this case, I could tell you that it's interesting that you take a walk around to find out if it's a game that satisfies you. As for the PlayStation versions, I'd rather spend my money on one of the many great releases we've had this year, even from Capcom itself, Street Fighter 6 and Resident Evil 4 Remastered are much more worth your money than Exoprimal.

Exoprimal's gameplay is truly excellent and visually we have nothing to complain about either. Still, it feels a bit limited in terms of content and although this will be expanded in time, it is a bit too sparse for now. We also do not appreciate the focus on microtransactions, considering it is a full-priced game. Finally, the audio is disappointing, which is a shame. Thus, the many positives also have a downside. Nevertheless, because of its fine gameplay, Exoprimal is worthwhile in its own right.

As a whole package, I found myself having fun with Exoprimal, but the harsh lack of content and weak progression systems really hold it back. It has potential, and maybe a fantastic game later on, but right now it’s difficult to justify the price tag.

Exoprimal is good, silly fun — but it’s not quite as entertaining as its wild premise would have you believe. Despite action-packed matches and a gripping storyline, Exoprimal struggles with its identity as a competitive game, and at times, clunky menus and pre-match cutscenes make dinosaur-killing time travel feel like a chore.

The gameplay, story and design in Exoprimal will make you feel fresh and excited when you first play it. However, the existing gameplay makes it challenging for players to sustain that freshness for an extended period of time.

It's tough to deny our slight disappointment with Exoprimal. Rather pleasant to play and offering many tactical possibilities in team play, not to mention simply insane phases with thousands of dinosaurs to face, it is clear that Capcom has not chosen the right structure: the one and only game mode to repeat on a loop is enough to drive crazy the whole first part of the game and even during the second. More solid content, a more traditional single-player campaign, more digestible writing and simply more things to do or unlock (other than skins that push you to buy the battle pass) would have been very wise to make it a fun game over time. We will probably have to come back in a few months, when Capcom has delivered a real variety through the promised seasons… but as it stands, Exoprimal looks like a dinosaur not far from having nothing but mouth.

Unfortunately, the pacing is slower than a triceratops wading through a tar pit. Cooler dinos and greater objective variety should keep players coming back for more, but they're unfortunately locked behind a story that's more tedious than Jurassic World and unfolds just as slowly. This is without even mentioning that cutscenes can sometimes play twice and some story instances (I'm looking at you, Magnum!) will not only play out multiple times, they'll play out with the same unskippable dialogue, the same extended loading times, and the same objectives...I just want to shoot dinosaurs, man.

The exosuites and great customization mechanics stand out the most, you can truly make something your own. However that alone isn't enough to keep player coming back. Exoprimal needs to more to fill the large empty spaces.

Exoprimal is a technically polished game with an interesting idea and a storyline that can hold interest. Unfortunately, all this fades with the overwhelming boredom and repetitiveness. It won't surprise me if the game soon faces an exodus of players and eventually moves to a free-to-play model.

While crafted from familiar pieces, Capcom's latest shooter is an enjoyable combination of mechs, dinosaurs and general silliness.

We're still wondering why Capcom didn't make its new multiplayer title free-to-play from the outset: its early-access content and the presence of a store and a premium combat pass leave no room for carelessness when it comes to the product we're holding in our hands. And despite a catchy concept and cool exoskeletons to hold in your hands, Exoprimal doesn't manage to be interesting for more than a handful of hours, the time it takes to see its 3 maps and take part in the rare original events it offers. It's a big waste of money, and we really don't recommend buying it as is.
