Enter the Gungeon.. where should i start?
With the great pixel art? ..or with the great soundtrack? or..
The game has so much great things!
Reason i give it 8 is because the game could be greater, but it's still great!
Bosses are a little too hard but.. This game meant to be hard so prepare for some hardcore..

The gameplay is VERY difficult but fair, and through trial and error, even someone with a small amount of skill can surmount the obstacles in this game, only to feel real achievement when they finally kill that boss (I am looking at you Chamber 4!) Each weapon takes new tactics and getting used to, and most of them offer a new gimmick or purpose that doesn't always seem clear at first glance.

Long story short - It is a great action game that while light on story, makes up for it in character and tons of replayability. IF that is you are willing to Enter the Gungeon.

I've been having some fun playing Gungeon. The controls are wonderful: they really perfected the dodge roll, which is fitting given the name of the studio. The sound design is great, as is the soundtrack. The character and enemy design and animation are top-notch stuff (and those bosses!!).

The difficulty is proper Roguelike-hard. It's more like my playthrough of Dungeons of Dredmor than Nuclear Throne: you really need to get to know each enemy and what it does, along with which guns work the best on particular enemies with particular attack patterns. Secrets are all over the place and super-obscure, which I like, but your mileage may vary.

The big downside: the RNG is really punishing on Floor 1. While the standard enemies are super easy, it's a huge spike when you hit the first boss. I've never had a problem getting a good set of guns by the time I hit Floor 2 and up, but that first floor can be super difficult because you have either an underpowered new gun or the default weaker one. For chests to open, you need a key. Those keys appear at random. That's the big problem - there's chests everywhere, but sometimes you won't open a single one, and then you're up against a boss who laughs at your standard pistol. Keys need to appear more often. The Convict circumvents this whole problem because she starts with a sawed-off shotgun, by the way.

Overall, I'm returning to it, it's a ton of fun, and I hope they clean up just a bit of the infuriating RNG at the beginning of the game.

Mostly a response to grayback's review who seem to either misinformed or terrible at the game.

Having played 21 hours in the first 2 days of release, most of the guns are either directly more powerful than the starting weapons, or are more difficult to use. In fact, the starting weapons are one of the only things I find boring about the game. Getting new weapons is always exciting.

Equipping your character is rarely something you get to choose, there's so many items that you're at the mercy of RNG.

I find all the bosses to be of roughly the same difficulty level that I've encountered thus far and have been frustrated with exactly 0 of them. Everything they do is in a pattern you can predict, anticipate and dodge. If you screw up, it's on you. The game has not once felt like it cheated me. To top this off, there's an incredible variety in the enemies, it's simply spread out amongst the levels. I suspect greyback never made it past the first to 2nd level.

This seems to be a case of someone who's bad at the game blaming the game rather than himself. I've played my share of games that feel like they screw you over, this isn't one of them. The balance is great, the variety is great, the art is great. The only thing that I would point to as being shy of excellent is the soundtrack.

I would urge anyone reading to check steam reviews where the general consensus is "overwhelmingly positive".

From the variety of characters and weapons, all the way to the original enemies and challenging bosses, this is a game you can easily sink 50 hours into in a blink of an eye. Even after completing the "real" ending, there is still much more to complete within this game, even if you've 100% completed it. I find myself coming back to play this game often, and in all honesty it is a must own for anyone who is slightly interested in the game play. This game, while extremely difficult feels much more rewarding when you finally beat that one boss that's giving you trouble, or that one enemy that's been giving you trouble for so many runs. The game also rewards good play but also relies on RNG to generate rooms and rewards, not to mention the variety of guns each with their specific advantages and disadvantages. If you are someone who usually finds themselves upset by "unfair" RNG, I can guarantee this game probably isn't for you as most of the game relies on RNG. If you get good enough at this game though, RNG will not hinder a run. The thing I find most enjoyable about this game though, is the Gungeon's lore. Each Gungeoneer is at the Gungeon for a reason, and by playing the game and completing side quests from NPC's, you will be able to unlock the mysterious story piece by piece in arguably one of the coolest ways possible. In conclusion, if you are looking for a fun and challenging rogue like, I cannot suggest this game enough. And while it's not for more casual players, the game is fair and rewarding. That's why I give Enter the Gungeon a 10/10. Expand

A game with a lot of potential (and still is),

Looks great and is beautifully animated, there are some great enemy designs (particularly the bosses) and some not so great enemy designs.

I always thought to myself it'd be great to have a BOI with guns, but without the synergies it doesn't make for very interesting or unique builds - In BOI, a poor run could still be enjoyable simply because of how drastically a combination of items could force you to alter your play style. Here, it feels like you need to get lucky just to have a fun experience. It is brutally stingy with money and health which is fair enough, but it does mean that more often than not a 20 minute run can dissolve in a few seconds.

Honestly though, one of the most irksome things for me about the game is that I think the first stage is just too big.

    "That's ridiculous" you say.

Well, maybe I'm just a crazy bastard, but hear me out. In a procedurally generated game such as this - it takes too long for a run to take shape and start feeling unique. For me it seems like you spend way too long with the default weapons and it can make starting a new run tedious, especially when the game hands you a dud weapon to fight the first boss with.

It's hard not walk away from each game feeling frustrated. In it's current form I think this is a good title marred by a couple of niggling flaws and maybe in the future this will be a 10/10 game.

    -----------------------------

Finally went back to Enter the Gungeon after a few years, most (if not all) of the issues I brought up in my original review have been addressed. The game has tonnes of synergies, it's much more fairly balanced and generally it's just a lot more fun to play. I've pumped a lot of time into it this time, unlocked all characters and defeated every boss (still can't win the boxing match).

All in all the game is genuinely a 10/10 now. Good stuff.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL;DR: if you like a little bit arcade shooting games, buy it. This game is awesome and full of funny things to do.

I have player this for many hours. Many. More than 40 hours. Ok, they don't seem that much, but each run takes no more than 1 hour. So I have made more than 40 runs.

This is because nowadays, Enter the Gungeon has A LOT of un-lockable stuff. Let me explain this.

As you may know, the basic Gungeon has 5 levels. Btw, each of them are different, with different enemies, and each more complicated than the previous one. There is a secret level between level 1 and 2. If you do it well in this secret level, there is another one between level 2 and 3. If you get a certain object in level 2, you can get to a secret level between level 3 and 4.

There is also a sixth secret level, 4 secret characters and 6 of the 8 characters has a secret ending. To unlock this ending, you need some items which are not easy at all to get.

There are also secret NPC. These characters will give you new ways of playing and shops. Buying item unlocks them, so you can find them. The new ways of playing give a new life to the game.

Apart from this, there are tons of weapons, power ups and passive items to unlock. Some are regular items, like shotguns or machine-guns; some are references to other games, like Duck Hunt gun; and some are just some kind of joke. But seriously, there are a lot of things to discover. I can't understand people complaining of lack of content here.

The only problem I see, and the reason why I give a 9 instead of a 10, is something inherent to rogue like games: the luck. Its presence is not high, but sometimes the run will be awful because of bad luck. It can also be awesome because of the same reason. I would say each happens 1 out of 10 times, but it is there.

The bosses and enemies in this game are incredibly tough to beat, and there's rarely a dull moment. This game demands everything from you, and getting better allows you to get further and further with each attempt. The gameplay loop of exploring dungeons, finding new guns/upgrades, and fighting enemies is engaging and rewards the player's skill and resourcefulness. Item and resource management in this game is key to success, and players are often given critical choices that can make or break a playthrough such as whether to buy an ammo refill, get a new gun, or buy health powerups. The game's graphics are also pure eye candy, utilizing impressive lighting effects and well designed and animated pixel art. The controls are also well implemented, with the ability to customize them to fit your preferences. The visual style and humor give the game some character. The absolute absurdity of some weapons and enemies as well as a plethora of pop culture references kept me chuckling throughout my time with the game. The passives haven't seemed quite so impressive yet, but I'm not incredibly far into it. Dodge roll keeps the movement fast and reloading adds a simple yet game-changing mechanic, requiring more skill and tactics. Bosses that seem downright impossible sometimes, this really is a great game. I've played both TBOI and Nuclear Thrones extensively, and this beats them both out by a mile for me. The amount of depth put into each mechanic in this game is breathtaking, as alongside the huge amount of guns and items Enter The Gungeon has, it also make pairing items a game mechanic, increasing the amount of game-play possibilities from Humongous to nearly endless. I've finished only few of the objectives of the game and still have not even come close to mastering the mechanics of each enemy and boss.

It's a game you can pick up after a month-long break and have an amazing experience every single time.
The only thing I currently criticize is that when you die, it's an immense pace-breaker so you want to quit, only to return a few hours later. So I find it difficult to play in long sessions.

Sorry for this very unorganised review, I just wrote down the thoughts that popped into my head.
