It's a sandbox all right. Do what you want: trade, explore, mine, bounty hunt - it's all the same. I've heard the argument that there's only a grind if you make it a grind - but those people are fooling themselves. There are HUGE money gaps in-between ships so you'll find yourself flying in small ships for hours and hours until you want to fling yourself off of a cliff.

It's not all bad. The flight mechanics are GREAT - ships feel weighty and satisfying to fly. Open-world PVP is always great (just stay near popular systems to find players to fight.) The docking mini-game is fun, but tedious after hundreds of times.

A vast ocean that's inches deep, Elite Dangerous isn't the game for everyone. I'm addicted, but I just space truck. I feel like Frontier rushed this game out to help pay for development. That's not a bad thing, but don't expect a full game just yet.

I just can't recommend this game, despite the hundreds of hours I've already put into it.

"a vast ocean that's one foot deep" describes the game in its current state perfectly. However I'm still giving it 9 because it's Elite and it's David Braben. It's also the best experience I've had in my Oculus Rift DK2 so far.

To the negative reviews complaining about lack of content - there is a lot more content than the original game and at least as much as I recall from Frontier/FFE and it's a lot more stable than either of those.

The game I've been waiting for nearly 30 years. 400 Billion star systems and a full space sandbox to do what you want. Nothing on rails, so don't come expecting to be hand held. Amazing game and it can only get better with planetary landings, big game hunting. The scale of this game is beyond belief.

Every so often I decide to change jobs and work for another company in the industry. When applying for a Game Designer position you always get asked the following question: "If you had one million dollars, what game would you design/build/develop". Although I tailor my responses based on the hiring company profile, the truth is not far from what Elite: Dangerous is. Although I tailor my responses based on the hiring company profile, the truth is not far from what Elite: Dangerous is. A sandbox space game with no linearity that allows me to "role play" from one end of the galaxy to another. It's like a 4X strategy game set in the cockpit of your space ship and with no support for more than one unit.

It's a flight simulator that hates spread sheets but makes good use of them. It's ruthless, unforgiving and, although huge, extremely claustrophobic. You can play with others players and meet commanders yet it gives out a really lonely vibe. You are out there, alone, trying to make ends-meat in the cockpit of a metal Goliath that may or may not be destroyed the next time it drops out of super cruise/hyperspace.

It's an infant, born with a huge legacy (the 84 version) that has to meet really high expectations. It has much to prove but it's off to a good start. It really is something special... something elite!

A lot of empty space for an MMO. No MMO tools. Not much content. Repetitive. It's pretty though. I'm disappointed, this game had so much potential. If only the MOD community could have got a hold of it.

No irritating Global chat, no forced congregation zones, but instead a consistent environment within which to play the game your imagination can create, if you like with a small group of friends.
The sound and visuals should win awards. I cannot say more about that.

Game is fantastic and only getting better over time, but you might have to have an IQ above 75 to find it enjoyable. If you're a CoDbunny 12 year old with ADHD, this isn't the game for you--but if you can sit down in a game that doesn't hold your hand, stare out into the vast universe, and chart your own course, then you'll have an excellent time.

Has potential, I enjoy the graphics and the great sound design but as many other people write there is a lack of gameplay elements. It feels really empty and it's really hard playing with other friends which forces people mostly to just solo out on their own. I hope with the future expansions the game might live up to its potential, but at the moment it is just an empty shell.

Much like EVE, the player's actions will help shape the galaxy, there are civil wars, resource wars, rebellions, famine, crime, smuggling, slavery etc going on out there, and you can profit from it, you can influence it or you can make a bundle playing each side off against each other.

It's not what they promised: no multiplayer, no freedom. You can't play with other players and, given the dimensions of the galaxy and the absence of things to do, you won't even meet anybody. Just pretty graphics and wild grinding: you make money to buy bigger ships. No challenge. You will find online free to play titles that are far better than this game.

Don't buy it now, it is a rushed release and a feature incomplete product. Wait at least ~1 year and then try it again. Keep reading for details.

I've been a premium beta baker and followed the development closely and I'm not happy with the game yet, however I really want it to become a success and good game but it simply isn't yet. So far there are only three good things about it: FANTASITIC Oculus Rift support, good graphics, not outstanding but good and a very well done flight model - but it's not newtonian but more like air planes but it feels very good.

If you want a boring space truck with flight times through the dark that goes sometimes up to 15 minutes and you love Excel and spreadsheets, well, then this game is for you! It is not 1984 any more, I would have expected to have some in-game tools for that task. There are people who are happy with that - I'm not. Eurotruck 2 is more entertaining if I would like to move stuff from A to B.

Except the flight model every other game mechanic feels very very simple and incomplete. One of the game devs even said in the forums (the beta / gamma forums are gone now) that for example mining is just the bare minimum implementation right now.

The game lacks diversity. You have basically 400 billion times the same stage: Some planets and less than a handful type of stations and ships that all look the same. You can't really see a difference between the factions just by looking at them, they don't feature unique designs. The game fails hard to build a connection with the player. Factions don't even have a logo in the bulletin boards, no face, nothing, just text that is always the same. I don't care if its company A or B or NPC X or Y, there is nothing that would create a binding between me and them. I don't care about them, I just look at the numbers and how much credit I'll gain from a mission - that's it.

Overall the game world is not very logical and inconsistent, there is far to much dice rolling going on instead of providing a logical world that makes sense. For example there are trade routes shown and then the exporting system doesn't even have what it exports available. There are missions telling you to get X in system Y and what it basically means is: Spend one or two hours flying around, waiting for a RANDOM spawn of a "unidentified signal source" and hope you're lucky and it generated the instance with the needed item for you. Another example is the RANDOM ship and ship equipment distribution. There are no ship yards, there are no factories that produce parts, it is totally luck based if you can get something somewhere. The chances are higher in hightech systems but it is still random. The missions in the bulletin board as well rotate very quickly, every 5-10minutes it seems it comes up with "new" missions - same stuff just different numbers. It is no magic to create a procedural game but to make it feeling alive and diverse is an art, so far Frontier failed to do that.

There is a A LOT potential but the current "game" just lacks the game. It is a collection of game play mechanics and basic implementations of them. The game needs at least another year of development, if not more, IMHO.

    2. Of all the similar games currently available, it does all the ones above the best.

    3. Graphics, sounds, art is extremely well done.

    4. The universe is quite realistic. The whole Milky Way galaxy is pseudo-realistically modeled.

    5. The community as well as the development team is very helpful and responsive. I've been playing the game for two weeks as a backer. During the course of last few week the dev team has been continuously updating the game, addressing issues even on Sundays and Saturdays. I have no idea what all the other people who gave low score here in Metacritic on the premise of dismal support are really talking about.

    6. However the game is currently not %100 done. There are many upcoming features such as better multiplayer support, planet landings, more ships etc. The track record of developers has been very good and majority of people in the community have confidence in game's future.

So the initial release of a game I've played for over 120 hours during the Alpha and Beta stages (despite promising myself I'd not play too much to avoid burning out) is finally released. I say "initial release", because this is not the end, it's merely then end of the beginning, with Frontier planning on updating and adding new features for years to come.

What 1.0 of Elite: Dangerous gives you is exactly what was promised in the initial Kickstarter. A modern re-imagining of the original Elite game from 1984, but it's also so much more than that and the potential for the future is staggering.

Combat in the game is a wonderfully visceral, strategic affair which requires you to eke out the best performance from your ship's weapons and systems to overcome your foe. This is no simplistic point and shoot affair.

Graphically the game is stunning, and the pure, unadulterated beauty of space in Elite: Dangerous will frequently stop you in your tracks whilse playing. Seeing starlight slipping over the floor of the docking hanger as the station rotates will make your jaw drop. Sunrises seen from the viewpoint of an ice asteroid belt will bring a tear to your eye. And this is before you add in the extra dimension (guffaw) of the Oculus Rift.

On the Sound front the Frontier guys have really hit it out of the park. From the roar of the engine boost, the groans of a ships hull under stress when pulling high G manoeuvres, to the thump of impacts and the ambient noised in stations and outposts, the sound design in the game immerses you in the game like no other I've played. It would be criminal if they didn't win awards for the sound design in this game.

Being a true sandbox, deciding what you want to be in the galaxy is the first step in a long journey (a first step that some people seem to stumble on as they seem to prefer being told what to do in games). Bounty Hunter, Trader, Pirate, Miner, Hired Gun, Smuggler, Explorer, it's up to you. And whatever you choose, you can always switch roles whenever the mood takes you as you're not locked into an artifical skill tree or any nonsense like that.

The one potential downside to the game (for some people at least) is that it will not hold your hand. When you first start playing expect to fail a few times! Expect to crash when trying to dock for the first time! Expect to actually have to practice flying your ship before you can fight effectively! Expect to have to put some of that gray matter to use when learning how to trade effectively!

There is no instant win here, and the game is so much better for it.

In an age where seemingly every game has an enforced 2 hour tutorial before you can even start to play properly, and where every game has been dumbed down to lowest common denominator levels, this is a wonderful, wonderful thing.

I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Elite: Dangerous to anybody who loves space, space games in general, and who has always secretly wanted to be Han Solo.

I have spent more than 150 dollars as an Elite backer after hearing phrases like MMO, breathing universe from David Braben the mounth of the horse so to say.

They really have some talented software engineers and I admire the scientific accuracy of the known galaxy. However they are still living in the 1980 in terms of what constitues for them to be enjoyable gameplay. Its a tech demo that would have been enough for the simple minded folks in 1980 but nowdays it is not fun. It is missing the human element!

You will have to do repetitive space trucking, mining, or bounty hunting with only predictable boring lame ass AI around. These mechanics weren't terrible if it was actually a living universe where you meet other players too who bring in the more complex and fun interactions.

Forget it, their net code has been always terrible and it is still a shock how they can release it that way. They use cheap ass not working peer to peer networking. However even if net code worked and they used dedicated servers as any MMO would do the gameplay is still killed by the on demand switch to solo player mode.

-You cannot pirate players since they just switch to solo, so you are left with lame ass repetitive AI.
-You cannot bounty hunt players since they just switch to solo, so you are left with lame ass repetitive AI.
-Mining is like watching paint dry, since you guessed it you just do it in solo.
-You can go out to explore and your chance of meeting another player goes down from 0.0001% in known space to 0.000000000000000000000000001% or in lay terms 0. Oh irrational enough you will still be intercepted by lame ass AI even in the most desolate avoided far away piece of space though. Breaking immersion if you had any to begin with.
    etc.

There is no risk vs reward in the system not counting lame ass AI.

And dont fall for the 500 gazillion systems marketing ploy. Procedural generation is nice to have and a good piece of tech, but it kills gameplay, it does not equal fun content. Every station, system is just the same after a while, no point in travelling anywhere after you have seen a few of them.

I wanted to like the game, but the fact I did not touch it for weeks now tells everything. There is a hard core fan base for it as far as I can see from the insane 10 points. Simple folks will like repetitive no content simple things as it seems.

The fighting system is awesome, the trading system seems to be working fine and the mining is quite nice compared to that it's supposed to be a grind anyway.
Getting money is what this is all about to level and that is what makes the lvl system work, no need to spend time on skills or other kind of distracting features. only need to work on my own personal abilities and get the feel for the individual ships.

Everything is working fine and there is a lot to discover in the game.

    Cons:
Multiplayer !!!!!!!! seriously this game is sold as an 'MMO' like game but actually there is absolutely nothing to do with your friends.

It is really hard to meet friends (you don't know where they are) and even more hard to try to do something with them... No coop mission, no PVE (except conflict zone but it is really boring), no convoy escort for example etc...

Just don't buy it if you don't like to play Solo, wait for early next year, the multiplayer part called "wings" will be added.

-3 points because of this, it looks unacceptable to sold a multiplayer game without multiplayer stuff !!

    Otherwise, all good !

The flight model is based on aeroplanes and not what you'd actually expect a spaceship be.

In addition, the game felt sterile and boring, and has a huge lack of built in help to learn. For me, removal of their promised ability to play offline even in single player was the final nail in its coffin.

Most of the reviews on here will be either 10/10 from hardcore fans, or angry 0/10 from people who have suffered at the hands of Frontier's terrible customer service and suspicious motives for ditching offline play. I'd say looking at the middle-ground reviews will probably be more accurate.

    1. Gameplay

Currently the Gameplay is very similar to that of Elite II - Frontier. Much of the gametime will be spent doing very little flying around solar systems. This in itself is not necessarily a bad thing: it is after all a SPACE SIMULATOR and space is big. Really big. It can't all be Star Wars dogfights. With Nav Beacons & Unidentified Signal Sources you can still get into plenty of combat if that's your thing. the controls are somewhere between Newtonian Physics and Shoot-em-up gamer style - a decent compromise.

However, the missions and space stations are, quite simply, boring. There feels like very little life around the stations, each one looking pretty much exactly the same. And you'd think in all of space exploration there would be more than a half-dozen different types of space station and 20 or so different spaceships. Missions feel deeply anonymous and repetitive.

    2. Content

It very much feels the game has been rushed to release (ironically one of the big problems with FEII - first Enoucnters) and as a result, it feels like there is a lot missing. a LOT. As mentioned above, missions / spacestations etc. are repetitive and repetitive and repetitive. Planetary landing is still out. There's also not much visual variety in the planets & stars, nor does it contain any stellar objects aside from planets / belts / stars (where are the comets? asteroids? whay are there so few moons?)

    3. Graphics & Sound design.

The graphics are as one would expect of a modern space game - decent but not exceptional - at around the same visual level as X-3, although there is still a lot left to be desired on the variety of stellar objects. Sound design is probably the games current strongest feature - the rattling of a Cobra Mk III feels like the pod-racers in Phantom Menace. Superb.

    4. Offline / online

the big debate. Many people backed the game on the promise of an offline mode, where the game could be paused & saved. One month before release it was revealed this had been shelved, the reasons given seeming suspicious. Most believe it was a financially motivated change (to enforce further purchases / micro-transactions). Either way, the companies abyssmal PR handling of the matter, and lack of refunds or communication left an extremely soured relationship with many previous fans & backers.

    5. Overview / TLDR

Feels rushed out & lacking content, but what's there so far looks promising. Could be an excellent game once fully developed. The lack of offline mode is still a suspicious move that feels financially motivated. Looking forward to updates & DLC, maybe in another 6-12 months this could be something special. Right now, it's just a skeleton. 6/10

ED has great potential. But I have to base my review on the released version and so far this is just a fraction of a complete game. PS. People saying the game is bugged have only played the beta version (called gamma), and so they have no idea how the release version is regarding any bugs. So take it with a grain of salt. If you really want to experience wow though, you have to try it in VR. E:D is by far the most mature VR game I've played so far (I have an Oculus Rift DK2) and the immersion and just straight up 'wow' you get from it is no other entertainment experience I've ever had. I've quite literally had tears in my eyes and feeling of awe on many occasions and even after several months I still relish 'going in' each time. If there was ever a case for the future of VR, E:D makes it conclusively IMO.

That being said, there are still some issues and limitations (player to player comms being the biggest IMO) but judging by the sheer dedication, enthusiasm and skill of the Frontier team, I have little doubt they will continue to push until it's the game we all know it can be.

Not to mention the customer support from Frontier is dire, makes me wonder how they are going to handle all that goes along with an MMO.

This game is the ultimate sandbox, trade, pirate, bounty hunt, forge a military career or become a humanitarian relief philanthropist. The way the game is put together is first rate, ship controls are tight and responsive, they handle believably with combat having real weight as you fire off your Gatling guns or take a beam laser across your hull. It’s true that the alpha testers like me after 400+ hour in the game have seen much of the content on offer at launch day, but they are in continuous development, and so I really doubt if a new player joining after launch is going to run out of content anytime soon if at all. The proof is that the vast majority of alpha and beta testers are still piling in the hours to this game, for a simple reason, there really is no other space sim sandbox anywhere near as good as this one.

This really is one of those rare games you could clock up 1000 hours gameplay with, so for £35 it’s an utter barging.

Also you can buy slave girls by the ton 

Exploring still needs some work, bu I kind of enjoyed this feature as it can be easily done in a starting ship to get you on your way with a couple grand in Cr.

Offline mode was killed but its not a major feature for me personally I can understand if its off putting for some people but just remember there are clever people that can (and probably will) mode the files to make it off line (watchdogs had it (got hacked), SimCity had it....(EA finally gave inn) this will have it eventually) -1 point for that

Keep in mind that development of this game didn't stop on release. A LOT of features will be added. One of them is improved coop functionality (group missions etc.) which I'm very much looking forward to.

It is Elite, and it is back. For me, it's been a game I have been waiting for very long time. Since Elite 3 aka Frontier: First Encounters I have been dreaming about modern, up to date take on Elite universe. When Kickstarter was announced, I was both skeptical and inspired. We pulled trough, despite nay sayers, and long period development started. I didn't know what to expect, as FD has shown lot of concepts and even working code, but still it was very early. But FD continued to press on and soon we got lot of concept art, ideas about how ships will work, how stations will look like, how background simulation will affect our lives. And then year ago Alpha landed - which was very nice surprise, as it soon supported TrackIR and Oculus Rift.

During testing period there's have been high and lows. Despite all this FD kept communicate to us and collecting feedback and with each release they showed us that they care and they listen. Saying that this, despite lack of coverage, is co-project with community is understatement.

Now,. we have Elite: Dangerous 1.0. First is to understand that this game will follow classic evolution of MMO - FD has already features lined up for post release. But how 1.0 holds up to scrutiny of the long term fan as me?

I will start with issues, as most likely if you read this whole, you are interested in those. Game is slow and long - it's hard to gain any short term investment without getting your feet wet with all mechanics. They are quite complex (although there are more hardcore games in space sim genre out there), and lot of design decisions take some time to get hold on and understand why they are important. So while you can certainly jump into game and trash opponent's ships in few minutes, it takes some time to get to that point, as combat is exciting, yet again takes time to master.

Co-op is possible, but also takes time to understand concepts around them. Improved way to do co-op is planned as first update post release early next year. Comms are very good in my opinion - text and voice comms are working with friends no matter of location, with rest of people they are local for system. There are ideas of station chat to be implemented in future.

When co-op works, it is beauty to behold. Taking down pirate lords together is new past time for many gamma testers.

Game's professions are mostly fleshed out for introductory gameplay - trading is managed by background simulation, so milk runs are limited to certain extent, rare goods are something you can take far, far away and find someone to pay for it - it's price will go up further you go. Trading goods aren't actually something random, it is weaved heavily in background sim and can have lot of different effects (like having famine and civil war in Sol system). Mining can be seen as boring, but I enjoyed every minute of it - you just can't press button and be done with, you have to actively scan and catch pieces of rock when they are blown off by mining laser. Bounty hunting and piracy requires lot of actual skill, and there are actual military missions too. Assasination, courer...you can do a lot of things in Elite universe - as always.

Missions is very important element in ED too - this is sometimes only way how to gain first capital to invest into new weapons or repay your insurance debt, sometimes they are very funny ones, and sometimes they are very important for your break - faction reputation is very big part of background sim AND your development of character.

It is hard to grasp everything what's been said as game is still in constant development, especially with it's background sim parts. There's overarching story line which will launch today, t.i. 16th December, so be sure check it out. Game is visual wise and sound vise a masterpiece so it is worth to check it out if you just like beautiful games.

Check out endless stream of Youtube videos to be sure, but one thing I can say - if you will let ED to sink in, you will enjoy it for endless hours.

Elite : Dangerous is going to be a love/hate game - I can see why some people are very disillusioned with the game as it is very much a bare bones framework for now and many players want more than that from a game; hopefully that will come. It is also a punishing game – if you make a mistake it can really cost you – wiping out hours or days of game play (never fly that which you can’t afford to lose and make sure you are insured) , currently some of the punishments are over-the-top (fines and rep hits) again hopefully these will be sorted out.

I can see that E:D as it stands is a very solid framework for what could grow into an amazing and immersive game.

The galaxy is vast and currently mostly empty but there’s still plenty to do and explore and I can only see this experience getting better.

Those who say the game is empty are perhaps a bit more used to modern video games that spoon-feed you narrative, make you the centre of the universe and constantly assault your senses.
Elite and Frontier were never like that and neither is Elite Dangerous. You are nobody special. You are a single person in a spaceship (hence the Han Solo references in many previews). You inhabit a cold, harsh, uncaring and deadly universe (very much like our own). Perhaps, with the help of other players, you can help set events in motion that fundamentally change the economies and politics of the galaxy. Hopefully you'll make a few credits along the way.

If you were one of the faithful that backed this game and Offline play was a deciding factor in backing it, then you probably experienced the amazingly shocking customer support/service. Basically the devs did a bait and switch and a few weeks before release they decide to let everyone know that Offline play is too hard to implement. So basically this game is now purely an MMO. If you asked for a refund you most likely got denied or offered a small fraction of the money you gave in good faith. There is a solo mode, but an always on internet connection is required (DRM? you decide).

There was also the revelation that they may implement in-game advertising, which reinforces the need for constantly being online. Also micro-transcations. Yeah that's right, buy your ships awesome skins! Awwww yeah! The stuff that matters (which could have been free btw. Oh wait, no stuff that. We gotta milk the customers right? heheheh). Actually since there is no monthly subscription fee I guess for this MMO to be viable they need to fund the servers through micro-transactions and in-game advertising.

Judging by the way their customer support/service, you are going to hope you do not have issues with this MMO.

I've not given it 10/10 due to content, there is enough in this game for hundreds of hours and even hundreds of years if you want to visit every star but everything is basic in implementation.

Read the negative reviews as well though for balance, some will make good valid points. But if in doubt join the ED forum and ask questions. Also note that there was (and still is) bitterness over design changes that occurred during beta which have soured some folk, others simply want this to fail.

The galaxy is a very big and exciting place, and even though the game can feel barebone in its initial release to some, the game is already a fantastic space opera sandbox experience. At first, I was really skeptical about the always online mode and multiplayer, as Elite is a solo experience at heart. But I quickly changed my mind the first time I rushed through an asteroid field with fellow commanders, pursuing a giant Anaconda ship and fighting to be the first to score the fat juicy bounty. It's so amazing to see human players zipping about the stations, in supercruise, or uniting to overthrow a whole system using trade, missions, vigiliantism and everything imagination allows, I wouldn't have it any other way now.

Elite initial release is still early in development, and is still an open platform than a truely full fledged MMO, but the potential is so huge, it would be a mistake to ignore it and miss the incredible space opera experience.

Frontier Developments have decided to use the same "Elite" name but not offer the same type of game-play, as with so many other companies they appear to have been lured by the short term questionable rewards of on-line only, while encouraging players to spend money on micro transactions and expansions.

It seems decisions are being made to maximise profits and that leaves questions open as to the long term future of a game that promises features, such as off-line play, only to cut them later with no warning.

The original game was played on a BBC micro computer, this new version makes the BBC news website due to features being binned. This is the skeleton of an old great game, so many cut or lacking features and I feel sad that I was ever excited to see it being developed again.

There is a steep learning curve, which can be overcome by listening to experienced pilots, watching videos and taking advice. But once you are past that curve you can see how solid the mechanics are.
Graphics are fantastic... and the sound? Simply awesome.
It's a game with no 'end game' and no final objective. There are not any NPC's that say "Go out kill 10 things and come back, and you get to move on to the next area" There's no theme park here. It's a sandbox where you decide what you want to do.
Want to bounty hunt pirates? Sure... want to be a pirate? Go for it. Trading? Smuggling? Mining? Everything is there. And you can do it all.
The future of ED is a bright one, there are plenty more features to come in the coming months.
The reason for 9/10 and not 10/10 is due to small things like missing features on release. But with that in mind, we know they are coming soon.

For people who didn't play games prior to the year 2000, it might be a struggle to understand the concept behind what Elite Dangerous is about. Remember, there is no in game achievement, there's no final target. The target in game is what you set out to achieve. Once you understand that concept, you will have a fantastic time.

Elite offered so much, and flat out lied. it conned its backers, repeatedly. Additionally with a poorly executed system of reputation and a faulty trade system coupled with a typical PR response of "Get over it" I would advise not investing money in this game

First minute the game takes your breath away and then it entertains you for another couple of hours to end up like a meditative tool for hard working individuals. What a waste and shame for a game in such beautiful environment. [Issue#253]

Everyone who played the original game back in the 80's, should be right at home. It's the 21st Century version of "Elite." But newer, uninitiated players may find it strangely desolate and repetitive. A grand space simulation, aimed at the series' hardcore fans.

You can focus on the journey, not the destination – even when some "road work" signs will bother you for the time being in the reincarnated Elite. But their numbers are declining with every new update so a thirty-year-old vision becomes more and more complete.
