great engine and amazing ground for a good game play but nothing to do
game is boring after a couple of hours and does not reward you for playing
you are forced to do trading if you want a new ship or upgrade the one you own cause combat and exploring does not give you enough credits

"Game" sucks and is only a way to sell the content as dlc. No way to buy complete edition. b

    The sound is also incredible.

Graphics could be even better but it is not my principal criteria. So i deal with it, 2.1 patch bring some enhancements so with time, the game is going to be deeper and deeper.

I think they might become a prototype for future HMIs which will be implemented in cars/aircraft/spaceships in the future. Expand

I was a massive fan of Elite II : Frontier back on the Amiga. When I had a chance to purchase this cheaply on a steam sale, I jumped at the chance. Now, 8 months down the line, I feel I have cheated the game creators out of money as I have more than played the worth of the full price game and the Horizons expansion.

Now, 8 months down the line, I feel I have cheated the game creators out of money as I have more than played the worth of the full price game and the Horizons expansion.

There is a HUGE!!!!!!! galaxy to explore with over 400 billion star systems available. Each of those has potential for planets to land on, or space stations to trade with. There are asteroid fields to mine.....or if you feel really challenging, exploration of new uncharted systems to seek out. Although this game can suffer from some lack of content with so few ships to buy and customise, there is enough out there to keep you enthralled.

There is a highly active community of players on various Facebook groups and on the official forums that can help make the game better. Teaming up with people to make wings to complete official missions for you chosen power on a weekly basis can be interesting.

Depending on how you like to play, you have a choice of either playing in Solo mode(where you are the only human pilot i your gaming instance), Open(where anywhere up to 50 pilots could be in the same area as you at any time) or Private(where you are in a private group and only others from that group can play together). In open, you run the risk of other human pilots looking for a spot of piracy and killing you. But that makes it fun.

In short, I have to say, this game is only for someone willing to invest hundreds of hours into it. This is no short drop in drop out type of game. You are either in or you are out. Currently I am out due to burn out from a 2 month long exploration trip. But I shall be back.

4 and just cos of great Physics release.
Gameplay interesting on start, but nothing special, boring and very repetitive in late game.
Graphics not much better than in EVE. Very shiny, feels wet and looks like Korean MMO more, good for old space games. Nice light effects. Game is stable, but will overlock even good gaming PC. Maybe someone like it - design looks like in scifi movies

I never played Elite before and after this game 100% will not do that in future, In my opinion game is good to purchase just on huge sales.

Despite absolutely loving this game, I rate this game as an '8', but that's because I recognise it's imperfections and sometimes it can be difficult to know what to do. It's still very much 'in progress' which is the most common complaint you will hear.

I thought I had better put in a review of the game because of some of the absurd reviews and scores here. Scoring a game a 1 or 2 because it's a different game from what you want is pretty pathetic.

I thought I had better put in a review of the game because of some of the absurd reviews and scores here. Scoring a game a 1 or 2 because it's a different game from what you want is pretty pathetic.

If it is not a game YOU want to play, then don’t. And don’t say ‘there’s nothing to do.’ Say there’s nothing I want to do.’

    There’s a difference.

This is a sandbox game. It's not Mass Effect, it’s not EVE, it’s not one of the X games. It’s not Star Wars. It’s not an action RPG or combat simulator. It isn’t even – and pay attention here – it is not a PvP game. It has PvP elements in it for those that want that but it is not the central mechanic.

It is a sandbox game and the sandbox is the whole galaxy. So don't complain that space is too big, solar systems are too big. Take it up with The Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Space is BIG. It’s so big that on occasion your objective might be orbiting a planet that if you choose to take the mission without checking the location on the galactic map and then choose not to abandon it, you might spend an hour flying to it. By choice – your choice. I'm writing this while heading for a huge payout at a station 0.14 light years from the jump point. This is the first time I've chosen to do something like this.

Solar systems really are big in reality and this is a simulation. Get over it. Most the time it takes a couple of minutes, during which time you can be looking out for distress calls and other optional events, watching the movement of other ships for potential ambushers or just appreciating the experience.

This game says - here is a whole galaxy. It's filled with sights to see, things to get involved in. There are pirates, there are factions, there are empires, there are countless trading and mission opportunities, there are a lot of ships and an almost infinite number of ways to configure them to your taste.

Go mine asteroids, go hunt bounties, go explore, go trade, go fight for an empire, go ally with a faction. Play in open world, a closed group with friends or on your own. Do whatever you want. Just don't ask me to hold your hand and lead you along the path to becoming emperor of the Galaxy. You’re just some guy among hundreds. You're not a superhero and the Galaxy does not revolve around you. In fact it doesn't care if you live or die.

Basically this is a game for you to make of it what you will. What I like in particular is that anyone can play and have fun. You don't have to have the best ship, you don't have to be an ace combat pilot. You just have to be able to set yourself goals. Whether that is becoming a top ranked explorer, a rich trader, an Admiral or whatever.

The flight model is easy to get to grips with but detailed enough to reward practice and imagination. The trade system works well, combat can be brilliant. Your brain is just as important as hand/eye coordination. More so. I’m nearly 60 and not great at combat. But that's no problem. I fly a ship configured to suit. I learn how to run from things I know I'm not good enough to fight.

You visit the Steam and Frontier forums and there are always people moaning on about how there are too many interdictions. This is a prime example of being not willing to actually play the game as is.

Listen up. You get interdicted all the time because you sit at the jump in point fiddling with your map while the vultures gather. You get interdicted all the time because you blithely fly in a straight line to your destination regardless of the knot of fighters ahead. You get interdicted all the time because you’ve gone somewhere too dangerous for you to handle. You get interdicted all the time because you haven't scanned the attacker and found it’s some pissant little Adder you can just blow away. And sometimes it's just bad luck. You made sure you had enough to cover the insurance rebuy before jumping into a pirate infested anarchy system, right?

Basically Elite Dangerous with the Horizons pack that brings in planet landings and missions is a fine game if you want to be a small part of a big Galaxy. It's obviously not for everyone and it does have its irritations and downsides. It can and will improve as Frontier release more content.

It's a solid 8/10 now. Ignore the reviews who are scoring it on not being the same as Streetfighter 2 or whatever. It’s Elite. It’s not trying to be anything else and it’s pretty good at being a worthy follow up to Elite and the Frontier games.

Combat: space combat is fun; unfortunately, Frontier Developments found nothing better to propose you than go to the combat zone, pick your faction, start killings things. Over, and over, again. Oh, wait, there is also a twist, resource extration zones! It works this way: go to the resource extraction site, target a ship, if it's a miner leave him alone, if it's wanted shoot him. Over, and over, and over again.

Trading: go to station 1. pick up stuff. go to station 2. sell stuff. buy stuff. go to station 1. sell stuff. buy stuff. What happens while you travel from station 1 to station 2? Nothing. You simply watch the very same hyperjump animation again, and again, and again. And forget any autopilot feature, the game designers want you to do something trivial roughly each 30 seconds to make sure your ship goes where it's supposed to go. An ancient chiniese torture, actually.

Exploration: you point your ship towards an unexplored planet or star, wait a few seconds, and the planet is now explored. How exiting. Now you turn your ship's nose towards the next planet, wait roughly a minute to reach it, wait a few seconds, great, you've explored it too. Repeat until you start to sing that old Nirvana song "i hate myself i want to die".

Long story short: you'll love it for the first weeks. Then you'll start to grow bored. You'll keep clinging to hope the devs will turn it into something interesting for another few weeks. Then you'll realize this game will be finished only when star citizen will be released: they just began to take your money earlier.

Before I start, let me say this: I used to play the original Elite on a C64, back in the 80s. I remember those days well, and E:D has taken a lot from the original game.

Before I start, let me say this: I used to play the original Elite on a C64, back in the 80s. I remember those days well, and E:D has taken a lot from the original game.
Let me start with the elephant in the room: "Miles wide, inches deep". Yes, compared to a lot of other games (whether it's other genres, or games that have had years to be built upon and deepened, like Eve), on first glance, there doesn't seem to be much you can do.
However, I feel like that feeling comes up once you approach the game in today's fashion, as in "I want to get a better ship, grind with that, get an even better one etc until I have the most expensive one".
I don't think this will work, and I feel it's obvious that that will lead to boredom eventually. Instead, it's up to YOU to decide what you like to do, and you can switch routes. It's not like an MMO, where you pick one class and spec and then you're mainly a healer or tank, or you focus on PVP or PVE.

In E:D, you can do PvE, PvP, trade, bounty-hunt, mine, trade, explore. If you want to earn money as fast as possible, there are recommended methods to do so, but to me, the fun part is trying out and doing different activities.
Right now, I have one ship which I do missions with or hunt down pirates, or dabble with some other things, and one ship which I do trade-routes with - long journeys which involve trading and can bring quite some profit.

Some activites are more exciting, others are rather relaxed. Trade routes for example take some time and involve mostly navigating and travelling. However, when you're hijacked (interdicted) by a pirate with a cargo hold full of valuable stuff, and you need to decide whether you try to simply run and sell your stuff or try to fight, things get tense quickly, depending on your equipment.

Look at the success of a game like Euro Truck Simulator... people do enjoy games like that, and it's ONE thing you can do in E:D.

It's true, the game does not hold your hands, and I recommend to read some beginner guides or watch some videos. However, IMO, it's not as bad as people make it sound. There are tutorial missions, and before I even started the game, I did those a few times. They taught me the basics of navigating, flying, dogfights, docking etc. Will you be a master after that? No, it still takes practice, but after doing these, I was able to start a new game and start doing missions, some fighting, trading right away.

I do recommend to use a joystick with this. It can be done with kbm, but to me, playing this with a joystick (possibly with a thruster added) is much more fun, and feels more immersive. There are suggested settings for different sticks, but a lot of players set them up to their own liking. Do the tutorials and get a feel for what you need, then assign buttons on your stick to those functions, so it feels natural to YOU.

There also is a story happening... alien artefacts have appeared, and just last week, people accidentially found some barncale-looking alien things on a planet. The story is developing, and there is a good chance there will be contact with an alien race at some point... and we don't know whether it will be peaceful or a conflict.

My point is: E:D has taken over some things from its ancestor... it's pretty old school, where there is a steep learning curve, no set path (meaning you pick what you wanna do, and you can change paths), you will prolly have to use your imagination to fill out the gaps and add more to the incrediby huge universe you can explore.

To me, the game is incredibly immersive, it can be quite exciting, and at least to me, there was a nice mix of frustration (losing expensive cargo or being killed) and fistpump-moments, like beating a tough enemy or earning a pile of money from trading and getting a new ship.

A lot has been said about the whole business model, with Horizons costing that much, instead of being an added DLC to the base-game for a lower prize. I am not getting into that, but let me say this: Playing E:D for two weeks convinced me to buy Horizons to have even more options in game, and I look forward to trying the new aspects of the game, looking forward to what will be added soon.

As a fan of the original Elite, I was surprised how much this game feels like the original. It's very old school, I think that's why it polarizes so much. It can be tough, can require a lot of research or trial and error, it can't easily be judged by a single 1- or 2 hour play session.
However, it is a ton of fun, with lots of things to try out, and I feel that I already got my money's worth out of this. I just upgraded to Horizons, and currently do trade routes (while having a movie play in the background, so it's a relaxed activity) to save up for a bigger trade hauler, so my current tradeship can be used as an explorer and planet-lander-ship next.
looking forward a lot to more adventures and seeing how the whole alien-storyline develops.

Was big fun of Fronier. Now nothing changed apart graphics. It is either where you start qes to dock and if you go somewhere further away from starting point there is empty space. No one. I mean no human players. The sequence of docking is painful when you have to wait these long seconds watching a bit of metal tilting by 30 degrees.

I've put over 100 hours into this game. You'd think that a game I've played for that long would deserve a higher score. That'e because, to me, this game represents the perfect example of a love-hate relationship.

The game world is HUGE, so expansive it can take weeks to cross it with some solid time investment. I personally love the exploration aspect of the game, and being able to first discover stars and planets gives you a reason to venture far. The ships are great and fill many different roles. Some ships focus on specific roles, some can handle multiple roles, and some are just cool to have. Flight mechanics are very well done but can be difficult to master, providing progression in combat skill. Weapons and loadouts are diverse enough that you'll always be coming up with different ship builds, sometimes to the point of obsession. The visuals and sounds are beautiful, FD really has a great art team. Along with a slowly progressing story-line, the game will give you a reason to catch up on the galaxy's latest news even if you're taking a break.

That was the love, well, most of it. We all know what must come next. Like others have said, the game can seem shallow and lacking, and can get repetitive very quickly. Missions don't make much sense as starting players will need to have some kind of ranking before accepting most of them. Players who are further advanced in the game may have many mission options, but most of them aren't worth the time investment. Grouping with others can be a hit or miss because of the way the games peer-to-peer online system works; sometimes you can drop into the same instance, sometimes you can't. It can be quite irritating when your friend is engaged in combat with someone else, and you can't come to their aid because of infrastructure limitations. FD's priorities put game breaking CTD (crash to desktop) bugs on the development back burner, releasing content patch after content patch while adding more bugs. The gaming experience would be much improved if FD would just take the time to fix them. The community is hit or miss when discussing these issues. Many members take it as their personal responsibility to defend FD's actions, for whatever reason, even if they are obviously causing issues within the game.

In the end, I want to completely love this game. There are so many things this game does right, and it's unfortunate that they must be grouped with all the things the game does wrong. I will continue to play it, all the while staying hopeful for the possible grand slam that Star Citizen has worked itself up to be.

Trading is incredibly boring, the 'economy' is completley static, nothing ever changes, so those exciting trade routes that you would find in the original games just dont exist, the prices are very similar everywhere you go.

Given a few years this game could become something great, but personally I feel that David Braben has lost the essence of the original games, some of the design decisions are just plain awful.

He is making a game for the masses now, dumbed down and lacking any challenge, its such a sad thing to see happen to such a great game series.

Now it's been more than a year and I can see (with much certainty) where things are going with Elite Dangerous. It is still the best (by vast margin) space flight/combat simulation ever made in terms of it's flight model and amazing feeling of freedom of control over your ship and graphics and sounds.

Addition of CQC (close quarter combat) brought that advantage up front and made best of it - CQC is the pinnacle of what I'm talking about here - it adds tactics to space combat (objects to take cover behind and inside, rock-paper-scissors weapon/defense choice (which can be changed during match by a number of custom made setups). Faster, nimbler smaller fighter ships.

"Flight assist off" mode is still the best and only way to properly experience the joy and freedom of space flight (and don't listen to those who tell you to only use it situationally - when you need to turn around fast and such - simply always keep it turned off, then you'll get to feel it). If you start learning it from the beginning you'll just need a few weeks to master it and each step will give you lots of rewards and fun. Don't skip it. Really it's worth it.

    Now to problems:

Combat vs NPCs in the main game is predictably bland and boring (as in every single computer game, so nothing to worry about). PVP in main game is unforgivably bland, too long and boring (compared to fun CQC fights it's even more pronounced) - by the very end of the year and months of countless complain threads devs finally pretended to address it, but only added some superficial changes - PVP is still in same state, now we just have a bit of freedom of choice on what modules to put on before engaging in bland, boring and too long fights. My previous review on combat was mostly based on fun duels I had before devs ruined PVP with SCBs (shield potions) and duels I had to specifically arrange, by asking people not to use SCBs - I was under impression that thing will get fixed in near future seeing how many players complained about it.

Which takes me to one thing I've understood about Elite Dangerous development by now - if you see that something in the game is completely wrong - it will not be changed. Also there are things that gradually getting worse - graphics get toned down every single update and devs do not acknowledge it.

And there's a lot of those things in the game. At the beginning whenever I saw a placeholder like exploration mechanics ; retarded missions (most of which are broken in one way or another) ; utterly broken background simulation (all those politics to take over systems, me being part of a small faction, economics simulation - it all either static or doesn't work or non existent) ; POI (signal sources) mechanics ; Super-Cruise flight mode.
There's much more big and small placeholders in this game and when all of them are taken together - the only part of this game that doesn't feel less than half-baked is flight mechanics and CQC combat.

So after a year this game is still a big promise and nothing changed, no game mechanics element was addressed (if only very superficially) to point where we can say it's not a placeholder thingie, but a strong and fun gameplay element.

I won't pay Frontier for their another big promise - Horizons. I'm fed up with their promises already and I can dream on how this game could be if/when they fix it completely free - there's no point of paying for it.

But what they made with flight model is something I like so much that I still play the game (CQC part). So still a 10 from me - if only for a small (but insanely important) part of this game.

    2nd review update:

Why I'm still giving E:D a 10? - it offers the best space combat simulation (multiplayer and solo) ever made. Especially good are PVP duels or 4x4 fights and all configurations in between - like 3x1; 2x4. (if you want to properly feel it - use "no-assist" piloting mode where you can control all acceleration vectors your ship is capable of). It's easy enough to find a good match for your skill and fighting is so great that your hands will be shaking from excitement while you try to keep your opponent inside your reticle. It's never getting old. Don't forget that this game offers very good in-game voice communication - they apply same radio filter to voice they use in action movies and it adds a lot to game atmosphere.

This game is a promise. Right now it only shows parts of game mechanics, but they are so good that can pass as a great game by themselves (some things are crude placeholders though, like missions, or mining, or exploration but devs are working on it).

Galaxy is beautiful and vast, sounds are wonderful, flight simulation is great, especially docking and asteroid field fighting. You actually feel like you're piloting a spaceship.

We are at the beginning of a battle on who will dominate colonized space there and peoples actions already have tangible effects on galaxy and game story developments

If you read them, note the date of the review. They reviewed the game not long after it was released and the game has (had) a huge potential to become something much bigger. The reviewers gave the high scores for high hopes. A year later, the game barely changed, beside a few additional features, which ultimately just gave the game more grind, instead of adding meaningful content.
If you play it for a few hours you get the vibe, that you may have to do a lot of things to progress anywhere, and perhaps you get excited, just thinking about the endless possibilities and options and choices.
Give it another 10 hours, and your entire gameplay consist of preparing to start to play the game and waiting for that moment, when you start really playing. Unfortunately, that moment never comes. What you do in your first hour, is what you will do for the rest of the time. Either trade back/forth between stations, which consist of taking off, traveling - loading screen -traveling - landing, or fighting endlessly spawning enemy ships, which change absolutely nothing, whether it comes factions or affiliations of various powers. All the other ships you may see as traffic is nothing else, but background filler. They serve no purpose or function, beside they are giving the illusion of "things happening". You can actually test this by trying to follow a ship, which will end up traveling somewhere infinitely, or landing at an non particular space station, and then taking off and doing over and over, without selling something or fighting.
You can also test, that whether those ships you blow up makes any difference to their faction or base. They do nothing.
Eventually, you will realise, that the entire universe is created for you, and outside of your visual radius, nothing really goes on, and everything ceases to exist as soon you leave. Unidentified signals sources pop up for you randomly, if you fly slow and their content isn't determined, until you stop to investigate by dropping out of hyperspace.
Sound effects is great. That's why I'm giving it a 4. If nobody else, then it's the sound team, that perhaps did their best to make something.
I see, a lot of people praising graphics. I don't see it that way. It's not hard to draw space and place objects floating in it.It's much harder to create Earth based fantasy worlds or actual locations with buildings, vegetation.
I can't give more than 4, and if I would not consider the sound and music, this game is maybe a 2.

Grind is NOT fun in ANY game.

There is a reason why only 3000 players are playing this on Steam, meanwhile FD is bragging that they sold over a million copies.

I had a ton of fun in the Horizons Beta, because everything costs 10% of what it does on the live server.

I actually felt like I was progressing every time I killed someone, sold something, or did a mission.

Meanwhile, on the live server, I barely scraped together enough money in 4 hours of play just to upgrade my Cobra Mk 3 to a Cobra Mk 4, and I can't equip jack **** on it because everything good costs over half a million for each part, sometimes over 1.5 million.

At this rate, I will never get into that ship that costs 170 million+ and requires faction rep grind, unless I literally only play this game all day every day for the next 2 years straight.

Grinding money for years to go through 10 different **** ships in order to get to an actually good one is not my idea of fun, if I wanted that, I'd still be playing Eve Online.

I do enough grinding IRL, TYVM, when I get into a game, I expect to have fun.

They should either make the rewards not be complete and utter **** for everything, or lower the prices to beta server levels (10% of live server prices), or double that, hell, even triple, but not **** 10 times more.

Add to that the fact that it takes ages to get anywhere in this game, because of the much too slow supercruise, and you have a recipe for a game that no one but the most hardcore and unemployed people will want to / have time to play past 2 weeks at a time with 10 month breaks in between.

Most frustrating, grindy and boring game I've ever played in 20 years, with the possible exception of Archeage.

Absolutely FRUSTRATING to play, and less fun that Eve Online.

The developers are making a game that THEY want to play, and they are completely IGNORING every single ♥♥♥♥ing piece of feedback that the community gives them to make this ♥♥♥♥ game more fun and less of a ♥♥♥♥ing chore to play.

They are not increasing mission rewards or reducing prices, so you don't have to grind an arbitrary number of credits back for half a day in order to get your ship back.

They are not fixing the completely BROKEN interdiction system, which makes it completely ♥♥♥♥ing impossible to avoid an interdiction every time you take a courier mission.

Earlier today, I took a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ 6000 credit reward courier mission and got interdicted 4 times in a ♥♥♥♥ing row (IMPOSSIBLE TO AVOID) by a CLIPPER, in my COBRA MK IV, and lost it. There, 900000 worth of ship gone to ♥♥♥♥ in minutes.

Uninstalled the game after that ♥♥♥♥.

♥♥♥♥ Frontier Developments for charging people crap tons of money for this ♥♥♥♥ game, I'd rather return to Eve, which I played from 2004 to 2014.

Hell, X3 Albion prelude ♥♥♥♥♥ all over this game in terms of fun and properly done progression, this ♥♥♥♥ game is all flash no substance.

In 2000 hours of playing X3 AP, i never felt frustrated or like i was wasting my ♥♥♥♥ing time grinding.

I have over 500 hours in Elite Dangerous and a bunch more in Horizons, which did not register on my Steam account, because I played on the separate launcher that beta players get.

Yeah, don't waste your money, this game is being handled by old farts who don't know a fun game if it ♥♥♥♥ed them in the face.

The game has an awful lot of potential. Playing with the rift is truly f-ing awesome. When I first got hold of E:D I sunk a couple of hundred hours into it and then left it alone for a while to see what came along next.

Apparently the answer is ... Nothing. You can buy a whole _new_ game which includes the base game (and some new features like landing on planets) but there's not much in the way of content (at least, not when compared to MMORPGs as the devs keep trying to do). The new game? More expensive than the original because it includes the base game. Which I already have.

I don't mind the money, I object to the shady business practices, broken promises and (frankly) half-baked level of implementation for all existing features/content.

But hey, why finish developing a game when you can add a few new features and charge the same all over again? Ok, they haven't _actually_ added most of the stuff you're paying for but they will. Honest!

Looking at their track record for keeping promises to date, I'm not optimistic.

In summary: Really good foundation to make a truly epic game, but it's being used to make a series of half-broken, incomplete, full-priced games, one every year to keep milking you.

Oh and as an added bonus, you too can have 10 copies of the game in your Steam library to really clutter things up.

    1. Premium Alpha and Beta backers are discarded, not listened to and continually been ignored, since 2014.
I paid $75.00 for Premium Beta, and according to Frontier, I do not qualify to own Horizons. There are thousands of us, some paid over $140.00 and left in the ditch by Frontier Developments. They are fraudulent and money grabbers with a half baked product of something they call a game, and obviously they are not implementing any meaningful changes to the game, beside adding more places to do nothing (Horizons) for a full price of a new game.
    2. Anyone bought Elite: Dangerous previously and paid for the full product $49.99, must pay another $49.99 to own Horizons. So, they have to buy twice the price, just to land on planets.
    3. Those who only buy Horizons, only have to pay $49.99 and essentially own both Elite:Dangerous and Horizons.
Let alone the fact, that the base game "Elite:Dangerous" continues to remain just a shell of a game, an empty void with barely any game play, beside auto-generated -spawned AI ships and completely non-functioning economy. Despite the raving reviews a year ago, the game has not evolved, beside a few additional gameplay elements, which has not changed much the game.
You can kill thousands of ships, it will not make any meaningful (nobody is getting weaker or stronger) changes in the game world.
You can trade thousands of items all across the systems, nobody is getting richer or poorer, beside you, and your reward is, that you can buy a bigger ship and do the same mindless/meaningless truck driver job or arcade shooter.

The "Horizons" addon, let's you land on planets with no atmosphere, but not even all.

Please, tell me if this is a fair business practice.
Even the most criticized EA Incorp. with its endless addons and expansions to their core games don't do this.
If you buy - for example - Battlefield 4 (core), for $49.99, your expansion of your pick will not cost another $49.99, and they aren't only adding another rifle to shoot with.
Following Frontier Developments' money grabber practices of the past- my predictions:
    - You will be able to land on planets with atmospheres (sometime in 2016) for additional $20.00 for Horizon owners. Elite:Dangerous owners (if they still havent deserted this empty shell of nothing) must pay another $70.00 to own Horizons with "Elite: Atmosphere" upgrade.
-You will be able to land on gas giants for addititional ($20.00) for Horizon owners, or you can get a Gold-Platinum-Game of The Year (no doubt the reviewers will hype it again, with a whole-total of 5 mins of gameplay) full package of Elite:Dangerous Horizons Atmospheric Gas Giant Edition for as little as $95.00.

Previous Elite:Dangerous owners with no Horizons upgrade must pay an addtional $120.00 to enjoy Horizons+Atmospheric Landing+Gas Giants super package.

    but on to the review.

Graphics in this game are awesome, not just in resolution but in their attention to detail.
But you can watch any ingamme video on youtube to see that.

It seems the game is more suited to those who have played the older games and those with patience, the reason for this is that iot all takes a very long time, but the longer it takes, the more rewarding it feels, so it's not one of those instant gratification games where you go in and you feel powerful right from the get go, you start of in a small ship with no indication of where to go or what to do, you're a free licenced pilot, what you do is your choice.

I see int he comments that a lot of people complain on the grinding, but few pick up on the depth of the reputation grinding.
The game has a built in politics system, basically, the more missions taken on by players for a specific faction the stronger that faction gets and the more it expands, so doing quests for all factions just to gain rep might not always be for the best, this is where groups come in.
As groups expand and concentrate their efforts on various regions of space, specific minor factions will grow in power and economy, thus changing who controls each station and what missions and goods that will be available, this also changes prices of such goods.

With the later updates in the game players can create their own groups and groups can turn to factions thus allowing somewhat control of set stations. The game is so large and deep it's hard to put it all in text.

The game has an automated economy system but it can be influenced by players, and the larger a game with these mechanics gets the more influence goes to the player community.

The game has it's charm playing solo and grinding towards that next ship, but the true potential of this game only comes to light when you start grouping with friends, and it shines brighter the larger your group gets.

Let's get this clear: I love big, huge, demanding, open-ended games that are demanding towards the player and might even seem tiresome at times. I'm a Dark Souls fan for crying out loud.

But Elite is just unfinished. It masquerades as a huge, online space-sim while severly lacking in content and variety. Sure, you can do multiple different things, but all of them are shallow and monotone. Don't expect other players adding a new dynamic into the game - The only time I interacted with other people was when chatted about nonsense while waiting in a huge line to a ridiculiously small space station. Whatever you do, feels tedious, boring, detached. The only goal in this game is to grind money in order to get a better ship in which you will be able to grind money faster.

Sure, the flight model is spectacular, the sound and music are awe inspiring (Try not to cry when supercruising for the first time). But for what? It's a shame that such amazing audio-video went to waste for a spooky skeleton of a game.

The first time I saw the galactic map, manly tears were shed. But my amazement changed into frustration once I learned all of those systems were alike: Dull, empty and devoid of life.

I will finish this review with a (quite good actually) quote from another disapointing game, Civilization: Beyond Earth. Why? Because I feel like it. Also, it expresses what I felt before quitting Elite perfectly.

"When Coyote learned he was the only one of his kind on the new planet, his howl echoed through the rifts and off the distant hills."

The hyper jump effects are pretty immense, but the game suffers from bugs and design flaws. The trailer on Youtube also might as well have "not actual game footage" displayed throughout the entire video, which shows just how bad it is that the game can't even be represented truthfully in an advert.

The main thing that I didn't like about the game though, is the awful moderators on the forums - which less face it, are a large part of modern games now where people can discuss the game with others. I've had simple comments of mine deleted, and threads locked, for absolutely no reason.

In the end I took Frontier Developments to court and got a full refund because they refused to give me my money back (which is something that a lot of people have asked for, being that one forum thread dedicated to getting refunds was the largest thread in the entire forum!)

Being that my love for the Elite games has now been destroyed by Frontier Developments, I just can't bring myself to recommend this unfinished, bug infested game to anyone.

Elite Dangerous is different then the original Elite but after more then 200 hours playing the game i can give my personal view of it.
ED is a space simulator so that mean you NEED a controller to play the game. Gamepad or joystick but you will NEED it. (i use a full set of warthog+trackIR5+rudder for max immersion)
no rules until the way you want to learn. That can be boring for players who are used to be game oriented by scripts or somelike. But it's Elite and the base is the same concept as the one in 1984.
So as player, you can become a trader, an explorer, a Bounty hunter or a pirate, you can get your own choice with no faction or choose a faction in the game with the politics conséquences of this choice.

ED is very complex to learn i agree but very rewarding when you understand how deep is this game.
Many people have just seen the dogfight / trade and exploration part of the game, but there is much more then that in it if you look a bit deeped, Galnet news are one of the way to understand that.

Technicaly the graphics are really impressives. But its a start. The game will improve again and again with months.

    The future :
Horizon is comming with landing, new stations, new missions, new fight, new vehicules and spaceshifts. This will take the game to another level. But more is comming ! David Braben (the creator and lead of ED) has promise more surprises and i think they will come and give a boost to this fabulous game that is Elite:Dangerous.

I give it a 9 well merited the 10, will come when i will see the Thargoids invading the milky way !

For me, this represents the scale of Elite - it's huge, and the content in it is easily missed. Getting from one side of the galaxy to the other will take some time. Getting to Elite status in any of the three categories will take some time. Buying the biggest ship and fitting it with all the best gear will take some time. The idea that you have to do any of those things is not really what this game is about - it's more that you can jump into a space craft, fly around, shoot things, buy and sell things, change the political landscape and immerse yourself.

For a while after, I harbored the delusion that they would add something fun to do in a future patch. The day they released news their upcoming paid expansion featuring planetary landing I knew that the dream was dead. There is nothing non-grindy to do in Elite Dangerous, and there never will be; because the developer thinks the game is complete. Complete enough that they've started selling expansions! Co-op with wingmen is terrible and penalizes players. Exploring is really boring, especially when there are simulators like space engine that let you visit different planets and stellar phenomena without the **** tedium of managing ship resources. Also, as sort of a side-note, this game more or less requires a good joystick, preferably a HOTAS setup.

What role you take on is completely dependent on you. If you want to be a pirate then you have to act like one. You can literally do anything you want to just don't expect your hand to be held down the path of a linear game. ED is about as far from linear as one can get.

Space sim enthusiasts will love this game. People who require hand holding and instant gratification will not like this game. It's pretty simple.

Obviously this game fell into the same trap of the later years' games development trend: it was released very early without making it satisfactory quality. This alienates me completely as I feel tricked for the price rather than satisfied.
The more hours one puts into the ED universe flying around, the more glitches to be found. Depending on how the player is willing to counterbalance these problmes with "roleplaying" workarounds and other mind techniques, they are there embedded into the very texture of the game.
After nearly 3 years of development it's still not clear for me what ED wants to be - it's more clear what it doesn't. The P2P system the whole engine is built on renders the possibilites of making a really consistent universe pretty limited (or I can say impossible). So the 400 billion stars represented as the full Milky Way galaxy becomes pretty 2-dimensional, it's like a repeated pattern of small bubbles reacing out to 30 light years distance.
The release was rushed and it ended up in a seriously unfinished state where instead of game elements we got empty, buggy and non-functional placeholders. Persistency is non-existent, the economy background is static and insignificant, the NPCs are spawning and disappearing just for the player in the very instance, they are not going anywhere and can be farmed like chickens.

We are now 8 months after this very questionable release and the backbone of the game is still missing but Frontier has been very busy cashing in more money for this quarterly-baked game-skeleton by porting it over to Mac and lately X-Box. The so awaited 1.3 is a meaningless grindfest, the incoming CQC is another firm step towards an unorganic arcade shooter gameplay.

The community forums are toxic when it comes to crisicism, those rare and lengthy discussions with constructivism are fading away soon without any feedback from the devs.

I gave 3/10 as a modified review now, big disappointment. I would like to see a great game where there are much more dimensions than just flying from point A to point B and increase a bank balance to buy another ship to do the same. Without proper and consequent interaction with each other and with the universe it's really flat no matter how beautiful it is. ED is an exhibition of stars but not a game.

I got this when it was at beta. I saw snippets of people playing earlier games and it looked pretty cool. I also wanted it to play with the Rift. For that the resolution is too low with DK2 but it looked promising. Overall the game itself has some nice graphics but gameplay is as dull as anything. Travelling around is very tedious and combat mostly consists of chasing a tiny enemy ship around.

The game mechanics are broken and flawed due to the fact that developers tried to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds: they want pseudo-offline capabilities but they are intertwined with the multiplayer mechanics, leading to a mess.

There are groups of people that go out and refuel or rescue stranded pilots. Other people join wings and escort miners and traders to get easy bounties. It's all around a great game. People that neg vote the game really just got into the wrong genre and probably expected only a FPS combat simulator. (which there is a lot of combat if you know where to look.)

TL:DR the game is gorgeous. Watch youtube videos and twitches. The game is worth it.

The ship mechanics are excellent and have the basis for a lot of fun however, the game really offers very little. You can do 4 things, all of which are heavily underdeveloped - mine (blast some space rock for a pitiful amount of coin), trade (fly unusable items from point A to point B), explore (fly around millions of identical looking systems) or fight stuff (grind procedural mobs or do bounty mission to kill some noob npc in nearby system). That pretty much raps up Elite's gameplay. All 4 things get tedious very quickly. Interaction with other players is minimal and connection with the gameworld is very thin.

The game feels like an early access game but Frontier evidently think it's a finished game which makes me feel a little angry and like I've been ripped off. Something that annoys me even more than this is the game's fanboy community of people happy with the game how it is who constantly say annoying things like "the game doesn't hold you hand", "make your own story", "use your imagination". These all too easily pleased people who could happily while away the hours playing with their Star Wars figures, using their *imagination* are probably largely responsible for Frontier saying "that'll do" rather than giving us a more complete game with more depth.

I've been generous and given it a 3 purely for the large potential and superb shell the game has. Just a pity it has no content, depth, interaction with other players or a connection to the gameworld.

Sadly it does lack a lot of meat at the moment but hopefully with time the developers will put more things to do besides trekking around the same star systems delivering drinks and drugs to the different markets and blowing up the occasional player you may find.

Everything about the game is great (what little there is to do) and definitely worth the price if you can find the game on sale. Anything less than $59.99 would make this a great buy.

Multiplayer utilizes P2P style ala Dark Souls/BloodBorne so if you're okay with that then it is an enjoyable experience. You can wing up with your friends in private groups or you can go into open play with them and complete missions or just fly together while trading to feel slightly more secure. There is a solo mode but you still need to be online which is explained by the fact that you still affect the game's server while not having to really interact with it.

Combat is frustrating but very rewarding. Learning to fly in this game isn't easy and many will downvote this game simply because of that, but if you can take the time to master it then you will have a very enjoyable experience. Do yourself a favor and spend a good two to three hours doing the combat tutorials to get the hang of flying while under fire. It will do you a lot of good.

The music in this game is immersive and fun to listen to in and outside of the game. It blends all of the genres of sci-fi very well and if you have a good sound system/headset you will have a blast hearing it.

Bugs: As all games post 2012 are apt to have... There are plenty. They are being fixed regularly but until they are all found and patched it is something we'll just have to deal with.

Cheaters online: As of now they exist as with many other online games. If it can be hacked then it will be. The Developers have been pretty lax about this which is very disappointing but they have made the claim that it is being worked on but until anything concrete has been done everyone should take the statement with a grain of salt.

For the competitive players... The game does have PvP. There is powerplay for those who want to join factions and make a difference. There isn't a leader board or tournaments (as far as I know) but if you want to pull your cock out and say you're better than someone then you absolutely can. It is very satisfying to destroy a much larger ship than you are flying or showing off who has the better flying/targeting skills but you won't get much beyond some in game currency and maybe a nifty screenshot, assuming you can snap it fast enough before flying into someone or being shot.

Elite:Dangerous is a fun game but it could be even better. Frontier Developments have a lot of decision making to do and hopefully they make the right choices but in the meantime players should just keep their fingers crossed and hope for the best. If E:D doesn't end up taking your fancy there is always the wait for Star Citizen or the plethora of other space sim games in development.

The updates themselves aren't spectacularly bad, they just don't fix the core problem of shallow game play. The developers don't seem to realize this is a problem. Going into specifics, here's the break down:

Combat: The ships are slow and not very nimble. This makes combat fairly slow paced compared to other flying games. Whether you look at something arcade-ish such as War Thunder or the hardest of the hardcore, such as DCS or IL2, the game is just slow and overly easy. Most weapons are turreted, thus removing aiming and when combined with low speed and little maneuvering, there just isn't much to it. It isn't tactical or strategic either, so there really isn't anything going for it.

Trading is equally simplified. The items a player can trade do not serve any in game purpose other than being trade goods. Trading useful items such as ships, modules and ammo is not possible except at a loss. Additionally, items cannot be traded between players.

Exploration is basically just a timer when all is said and done. To to exploration, jump to a system that's "unexplored" and fire your scanner. 5 seconds later, point your ship at each object in the system one at a time for 10-30 seconds to get a detailed scan. That's it, the end.

The various other professions aren't any deeper. The end result is a pretty game that could have been amazing if the developers hadn't been living under a rock for the last 30 years. But they were, and so it's ultimately just a cross between Asteroids and Pac Man. And to make it worse they decided the players are too dumb for that so they simplified it.

Missions can be a little repetitive and not being able to decide which faction to start with is a little frustrating however you do feel a sense of danger when doing dodgy missions like smuggling slaves or assassinations.

This is one of the shallowest games in this price bracket I have ever played. It has about 20-30 hours of gameplay - enough to get you to what is technically barely midgame - before you are locked into an endless cycle of grind. The only saving graces are the high quality graphics and sound. In terms of game, it's a sandbox that's very very low on sand. Avoid at all costs.

Oculus Rift DKII makes this game -absolutely amazing-

    CONS
Graphics are getting hammered into the ground with each new patch. FD has said this was due to bugs, but for some reason I think it coincides with the XBox release.

The game itself is -extremely- boring and very convoluted. Missions are timed, which isn't an issue, but to complete these missions is more of a chance of luck. Random spawn areas in space called 'unidentified signal source' are random spawns, so you are entirely at mercy of a random number generator when it comes to trying to complete missions. Not only this, but the missions are not explained very well. Example, you need to kill three pirates in system X. Okay, so you go to system X but you have no idea what the pirates, who they are, where they are, etc. Everyone says 'the game doesn't spoonfeed you' which is true, but at the same time the game doesn't explain ANYTHING at all to you. It's not fun, just bad/lazy design.

The game offers the illusion of freedom but in truth Frontier Development controls everything. You are less of a player and more of an NPC. You cannot customize your ships outside of loadouts and pre-defined paint job designed by FD. You cannot form guilds/outfits. You cannot trade credits/items with other players (there is no trade interface for player-to-player trading). You have to follow ingame laws imposed by FD, for instance there are actual SPEEDING LAWS (Yes, the same things as IRL) where you will get fined for speeding while in the process of docking, only if you hit anyone. But still, the game has SPEEDING LAWS.

Want to play with a friend? The game now allows you to form a three-man wing with two other people. However, the game's instancing issues prevent players from being able to be in the same instance together. So...it kind of defeats itself.

The game's AI is terrible. And I'm not talking about the aspect of combat, I'm talking about just overall. For instance, if you accidentally bump or hit a system authority vessel (police) you will become wanted and instantly blown up. No chance for forgiveness, no sorry, no 'oh it was an accident'. You can lose hundreds of billions of credits in a split second because an AI cop flew infront of you/bumped into you.

The community is very bad. The majority of players are masochists and will tell you to git gud or go play something else for complaining about the game in any way. They prefer the game to remain as its 1984 iteration and don't care for anything which may have happened since then in the gaming world/game design and development.

Powerplay is a new thing they put into the game to get people to play it. While it looks cool, it actually is nothing more than a boardgame played over a course of a week. A lot of players have actually said that the amount of time needed to get anything out of it makes it out to be a second job. If you are a casual gamer, you will not be able to attain the benefits/rewards involved with it.

All in all, Elite Dangerous is a fantastic piece of technology and audio engingeering, but as a game

    IT
    IS
    NOT
    FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My recommendation is to not play. FD has gone silent with players and a lot of people are becoming disenfranchised with the game. I don't recommend this game at all.

Even if there were no bugs, no abysmal P2P network system that is constantly getting hacked, there's no reason to PVP because it's a battle of shield cells. Once they are down, people can instantly target your ships Power Plant, rendering 100% of your armor 100% useless. There's literally no point to PVP. What about NPC you ask? What about them I say. They are awful. They can't fly straight. They are suicidal. The NPC pilots of the worst ships in the game will constantly harass you by the dozens, and each one will only last for about 5 seconds of firing before you've killed them and collected your pennies.

What's that? You want DANGER? The most dangerous thing in Elite dangerous is the start menu. Why? Because you have to go in and out of the start menu 1 or 2 dozen times before you get placed in an instance with DECENT ships spawning, instead of just garbage.

I'm not even going to get in to the fact that literally every one of FD's trailers has been an absolute lie in terms of actual content and gameplay. They make me sick to watch. It's like a completely different game.

I really REALLY want to say something good about elite, like it is fun to explore or what not, but what GOOD there is in Elite:D is DESTROYED by all the bugs. Exploring was the bees knees, but since the 1.3 patch it's been broken. Every couple of system jumps you will crash out of the game and lose your last 2/3rds of exploration data. FD doesn't even care. Fun fact, it took me TWO WEEKS to return from a trip I spent only 3 days going outbound on. That's how bad the servers are. I contacted support about millions of lost credits and the constant crashes and they basically said they know about the issue but don't care.

Why should they care when I can just keep slamming my head against a wall, grinding away for the chance to unlock another reason to grind away.

A shallow, buggy, poorly designed space shooter with limited multiplayer and awesome graphics and sound. Does not resemble the kickstarter pitch, development diaries or the trade show talks. Not in the same league as the previous Elite games. Currently being consolised. YMMV.

Elite:Dangerous is a game for those that enjoy interacting with game forums but try to avoid direct PvP confrontations in game.

Frontier has decided that player organizations in MMO's are disruptive and unfair to players that like to play MMO"s alone. To this end, Frontier has offered no means for player's to organize in a meaningful way in game. They reluctantly released the Wings patch simply so that players could form transient groups of four. But that is as far as they are planning to go. All other player organization is done through metagaming and has no presence inside the game.

Elite:dangerous is also not a sandbox. Regardless of how many fans of the game say it is. There is no user created content other than role-playing and fan fiction. Would you like to capture and control a system? Forget about it. Frontier designed their game in such a way that maintaining any significant control of a system is extremely difficult (if not impossible) and offer no rewards for doing so.

Elite also is suffering from a lack of meaningful content. Given that player driven drama has been removed from the game, Frontier forgot to add compelling content of their own for players to enjoy. The GalNet feed reads like the script from a bad movie and the in game activities associated are almost entirely a PvE grind. Frontier formalized the Galnet grind into the powerplay release. This release is essentially PvP via PvE grind.

So if you were looking for a Space sandbox where you could be involved in players truly shaping the galaxy with their own player factions and player conflict. This is not the game for you. In Elite:Dangerous you will be called a griefer if you attack a player without getting permission first. And any attempt to control any system is regarded as mean.

Looks great, sounds great, barely any bugs that I have found. BUT>>>>Repetitive, extreme grind, no variety in environments, same few models of stations and docks across 22 thousand + systems. Only 20 ships which relegates you to extremely few choices as you acquire more money and about 10 of those 20 ships are already obsolete to the others. THIS IS NOT A SANDBOX, at least not for intelligent adults. Expand

First minute the game takes your breath away and then it entertains you for another couple of hours to end up like a meditative tool for hard working individuals. What a waste and shame for a game in such beautiful environment. [Issue#253]

Everyone who played the original game back in the 80's, should be right at home. It's the 21st Century version of "Elite." But newer, uninitiated players may find it strangely desolate and repetitive. A grand space simulation, aimed at the series' hardcore fans.

You can focus on the journey, not the destination – even when some "road work" signs will bother you for the time being in the reincarnated Elite. But their numbers are declining with every new update so a thirty-year-old vision becomes more and more complete.
