Giving it a 10 simply because I haven't played or bought anything else since I started playing the development builds of this game. These scores are after all used by people to compare against other games and since I personally no longer are even interested in other titles this then follows logically. ;)

In terms of features/content there is still plenty to get done, but with the potential scope of the game that will always be the case. There will always be more to add and improve and the devs have always said that this is a long term project for them. What we have now is only the beginning.

I don't really agree with people claiming that it is lacking in terms of content though. I've played it all through development and still keep on finding new things in game that I haven't seen before. There is plenty to do in the game, but it DOES require the player to actively find these things. Improvements in how to present these things to the players in different ways would go a long way of making people realize how much is actually in there.

Improvements to co-op is also sorely needed at the moment and this is probably my biggest gripe at the moment, but this is also the next major thing the devs will get into the game early next year. It's NOT impossible to play with friends, but it isn't optimal either at the moment.

On the whole it is fantastic though with so much more planned down the road. When seamless planetary landings are implemented together with first person gameplay in ships/stations and down on planets I will never log off again!

    So go get it! :)

Some people have been waiting for more than 27 days for a refund after Frontier broke the promise to make it an offline only game. They have stopped all communication with the customers who have been requesting refunds. Those customers are also being treated like criminals, and like they are trying to abuse the system.

The game is incomplete, it features very little of the actual promised features and everything has a little star next to it saying this will only be added post-release. It took my friend and me 8 hours to reach each other because the game does not allow you to specify your start location and does not offer any fast-travel methods. That's also a post-release "promise".

Because the game has always-online DRM the future of the game is entirely in their hands and you never actually own the game yourself. If they pull the plug on the servers tomorrow all your money and time is gone. Due to the high cost of the servers I would not be surprised if the game is F2P in 6 months to a year.

Their EULA also allows them to add in-game advertising...

It's actually a 7 or a 8 game, but I can't give them a score like that with the way that they are treating their customers. and for the reasons listed above.

I don't care about the potential of a game.
It was announced as offline game. The offlien mose was cancelled near release.
If you try to get a refund - the company is slow in replying to emails. A "48 hour" support ticket takes right now over a month. Other bad things form additional account (not refundable as it was already used in beta) Only four types of stations, most missions

Only four types of stations, most missions are stupid grinding missions. On 99% of the routes theres no profit for trading, price system is far better in other games (do you really want to use a occulus and then note prices on a paper sheet which are wrong next time as even in solo game other players influence the price?), Advertising, ...

So for me the game is crap.

They have a really good set of bounty hunting, exploring and trading careers to advance with, but bounty hunting often makes the feds or random factions turn red and shoot you (confirmed bug), trading cargo is glitchy and exploration data disappears. At this point, after around one million credits lost to bugs, most of the tension in the game boils down to a question of whether a given feature will explode when I try to play with it. Expand

    My opinion:
To me the biggest problem with this game coincides with its biggest selling point: its pursuit of realism.
On the one hand it's cool to see the entire map of the milky way, but after a few instants my thoughts were "What's the point of all those stars, I'll never be able to explore them all". I'm not even sure it's possible, since I tried to venture in the dark and couldn't

It's also great to experience the sheer size of stars, planets, and to have like "realistic" dockings, but after a while that becomes tedious, a chore, to lose 15, 30 minutes, even hours, just to fly between systems and dock. Also understanding how the UI works is a nightmare, and that's one of the most important thing to attract players!
So it's all too slow-paced, you will spend most of the time just flying through systems. Combat is cool I have to say, it requires skill, but again, it's rare to pick up a fight and you spend more time "searching" for opponents than actually fighting.
I have hopes for the (paid) expansions, planetary landings etc, but honestly I don't think it's possible to get outstanding results out of procedural generation of 1:1 scale planets, due to the limits of (current) computational power.
So in essence a fantastic space simulator, a meh game so far.

For all those who loved Elite and Frontier, this will be an amazing game. The open galaxy to explore in a beautiful visual rendition of the classic game. Of course, being a true sandbox, many people might not like this, but others will also find that it both caters to hardcore online players and casual solo gamers.

What you need to understand before buying this game is that you're not going to see A LOT of player interaction. There is some, but not a lot. What it does instead is what I love most about the game. It has a persistent universe ( or perhaps I should say galaxy?), where every single player shares the same economy and changes in galaxy-wide politics.
You've depleted a belt of minerals all by yourself? Well, now it's empty for everyone else too. This is why Elite: Dangerous has to be always online. Not because you run into players every two seconds, but because you share the same galaxy.

Oh, one last thing. Exploits for the economy are well known and were identified weeks ago. It was assumed that these would be fixed before the final wipe of progress the day before the final release. The devs in all their illogical splendor decided to not only ignore most of these exploits, but not to wipe the servers before going live. So you will be starting out with a crappy little ship, while people own their own outposts!

I would have voted for a 5 but all the BS 10s that are being thrown on here are rediculous lies. So it gets a zero for now. I will try to remember to re-review in six months after they have tried to sell DLC to fill in some of the missing parts.

First of all... Although the game is multiplayer don't expect an MMO with dozens of people around everywhere because its peer too peer system allows only 32 player per instance and the galaxy is so huge the player base will be spread so it might be hard to find player targets for pirates but everyone who would like to PVP agains others will find players with the same will at combat zones I am sure.
You can freely swich between modes solo online, private group, or open so you can avoid "griefing" if ther is any.
    ---------------------------------------

Its a game for those who would like to have a chance to explore the beauty of our galaxy in the future (3300) meanwhile there are different ways to experience it. Trade,Bountyhunt,Pirating,Mining,Exploring, or the mix of these with lot of different ship. You can gear your ship according to your choice of role.

Although there is no "scripted" personal sotry of yours you can take part of its background simulated story of its "living world" with empires fight for domination. You can decide what side you choose and work for their domination and expanding empire or just leave the conflicts behind and go far far away to do your own bussiness.

I think anyone who loves science, space, and flying in sims would enjoy this game already but those who are looking for an action packed "space shooter" with constant battles and "quicktime events" might be disappointed because the main focus is not the combat in this game and the pace might be slow for those. Feature updates in the near future are expected and big expansions are planned also in the "years to come" so the game will have lot more content. (planetary landing, walking on stations)

"""Frontier Developement has built a huge luxury house on a nice beach it has nice furnitures a big swimmingpool but maybe there isn't a pro home cinema room just a big plasma tv with hifi stereo receiver nor there is a jacuzzi yet. (But it might be built.)" "So those who don't like the beach and need a home cinema to be happy might won't like it"""

I haven't tied the co-op multiplayer yet but I know it has some issues but I think it has priority so it will be fixed hopefully soon.

    My scores for the v1.0:

    Graphics - 9
    Audio,Music - 10
    Combat - 9
Multiplayer/Co-Op - 6 (some features are missing but will come early 2015)
Content/Features -7 (some part have to be ironed out a bit)

The future of this game is promising if FD wil continue to work with the same enthusiasm as they have been done it till today. My opinion is that this game has been made for a niche but enthusiastic audience and I don't think thats a bad thing. The question is: Are there enough of "us" to make it succesfull?

Overal Score - 8 (I should give it to 10 to balance out the ridicilous scores with 0)

That said, if you own, or are looking to own, an Oculus Rift, then this game is a must buy. The game is beautiful. It makes for a perfect Oculus Rift title thanks to it's stunning visuals, immense sense of scale and beautiful audio.

tl;dr - Current state of the game: Grind credits to buy bigger ships so that you can grind credits better. Graphics & Gameplay has been improved over the original Elite (1984), but content has stayed the same (unless you count the 400 billion empty, lifeless, procedural star systems).

Elite Dangerous will be a great game in another year or two. I have little doubt of that. However, as of the writing of this review, Elite is almost entirely unplayable. The foundations for a great game are all there, but there's little to keep players interested.

Mining, exploration, combat and trading are the only activities currently open to players. You can either do any of these activities on your own, or you can accept a generic mission and do them for an npc you'll never meet or interact with. With exception to combat, all these systems are basic and repetitive.

While there is a dynamic economy in the game, trading is hardly complicated when compared to that of games like X3 or EVE. You buy low, and you sell high. The only excitement comes in the form of random pirate and police attacks. You can observe changes in the economy, but, unless you enjoy watching numbers go up and down, I doubt you'll find this exciting.

Exploration involves flying to new systems and pointing yourself at 'undiscovered' celestial objects & stations. You won't be stumbling into any ship graveyards or sentient nebulae. There are no surprises here and, unless you're an astronomer looking to observe binary stars & black holes, you probably won't find this very exciting either.

Mining is even simpler. You find asteroids and you shoot at them. Maybe you'll get attacked by a pirate, maybe you won't. Combat, on the other hand, feels great and intuitive. The game's audio and HUD are highly immersive and really shine in combat. Unfortunately you'll most often find yourself fighting against AI due to the whole 400 billion star systems thing.

There is no concrete system that promotes team-play, and you'll probably make more money fighting NPC's rather than players. The games selection of ships is also rather limited when compared to other titles (and they all look like geometric shapes).

The biggest problem with the game right now is the fact that there is no end-game. There's nothing to strive for. You may set personal goals, like visiting a distant system or getting a certain ship, but, at the heart of it, everything you do ends with you making credits in order to make credits better.

The living world is entirely a novelty, and will almost never directly impact you. You may have to go to another system to buy cheap goods, or you might note the presence of more police ships, but this will never make a significant impact on the way you play the game. You will never feel like you're doing something important. There is a giant disconnect between the world of the NPC's and the world of the players.

There is a giant intergalactic war being waged, but unless you force yourself to care it's really of no consequence to you. You can't interact with NPC's, so there's very little to connect you to the troubles of the poor populace of miners living on some rock. You might visit a planet with billions of inhabitants, but the space around it will feel just as empty and lifeless as the distant reaches of the galaxy.

So, all of this leaves you to motivate yourself. Sure, you can try to join one of the galactic empires and lead them to victory, but what's the point? No NPC will thank you, unless it comes in the form of a giant wall of text available as a generic contract in a space station. You won't get a limited edition ship, nor will you get the joy of watching or participating in any giant cinematic battles. There's no sense of urgency or need to drive you forward.

All you have to do, is to make credits so that you can get upgrades simply for the sake of getting upgrades. The foundations for a great game are all there, but to call this release ready is a joke. I highly advice new players stay away from Elite until more content is added. I've honestly had more fun playing the Star Citizen alpha than I have playing the release-candidate version of Elite.

To put it into contrast, imagine an X3 with better graphics and combat. Now imagine that you can't control more than one ship. That NPC's don't have a voice and communicate through text. That there is no single player story. That all space stations serve only one purpose. That you never see any other ships unless you're in combat or docking. That you can't own space stations. That exploration only leads to you finding floating credits. And, well, the list goes on...

You can look out the windows, admire a passing ring system with a setting sun and track a pirate as you blow him up.. you are there sat in the seat with your ship around you.
It is probably the best rift game there is.
The game is a sandpit.. you make the story, you decide what you want to do that day.. trade.. pirate.. bounty hunt.. explore. There are no levels..no end game... enjoy the ride and the view!
The game is online and will continue to evolve..so this is just the start.

This game isn't about being the biggest or richest or baddest its about simply being and playing a role in an ever changing galaxy.

After setting up, which takes a while as explained below you can drop in and out whenever you want. Once you find your friends you can play with them. But this game is for adults with patience. so be warned.

I started playing this game last week after dusting off my old gaming pc after moving house.

Make no mistake this game is difficult to get your head around at first but nowehere near as difficult as games in the X series which I simply gave up on after a few hours of play. I tried using the xbox controller to begin and although manageable I realised that buying a flight stick was the way forward. I bought the T flight HOTAS for around £30 and also bought a headset and voice attack and this changed my experience completely. So the settup cost for this is around £80.

The game takes a while to learn. I spent several hours setting up my controls, learning how to fly, setting up voice attack.

Then I needed to learn about how the galaxy worked, how trade worked, how to fight, how to escape people attacking me and then did a mission or two. I died twice and didn't make any money.

Then, suddenly, everything just started coming together for me. I began to actually feel like the ship was my own and this was a huge galaxy to explore.

I now have a sidewinder with a few add ons and about 20k in the bank, thats nothing. I am in system I don't remember the name of and have no idea where I am going to go next. I love it and the great thing is the experience will only get better.

    2. Trade. Knowing the markets helps here, I would recommend running missions from the bulletin board to not only increase rep, but alo get first hand knowledge of the markets. Whilst a lot can be gauged through the Map interface, I found this method to be less likely to cause loss.

    3. Mining. Its pretty bare-bones and they will add more features, right now you equip a mining laser and a refinery, the more expensive ones have more bins, fly to an asteroid belt or extraction site and blow pieces off of it. Only way to know right now is to target each chunk for an analysis. Most in system ones are quite depleted and so could take awhile to refine enough (5 to 20% takes time). Going to unexplored regions to find pristine areas will yield much higher percentages and will be quicker.

    3. Bounty Hunting. Get a warrant scanner, and use it before engaging, yes you'll be jinxing avoiding incoming, but this maximises profit. I have used the Eagle successfully and will even submit to interdictions almost with glee, but know your limitations and how to use your power settings appropriately. Oh and when to run.

    4. Smuggling. Again, like trading knowing your local group will pay dividends. Knowing where to buy goods which are illegal elsewhere and where to drop them off at a black market, not all stations carry them.

    5. The cockpits. You're sitting in a 3D modelled cockpit, only Star Citizen will feature this.

    6. Multiple ship ownership. You can tool up each ship for different roles if you so choose.

Overall, 9 from me, addicted and all I think about is Elite and my next moves as I am trying to increase faction rep with the Empire. although this is by far not the only thing I will want to do...:).

Game was wouted originally as an offline/online game. 1 motnh prior to release (after 2 years of development), they let slip that they cancelled offline. People wanted a refund because the game wasn't anymore what they were sold and Frontier Development Started a dragged out tug-of war with their own customers to delay payments. Game itself is a shell of what it should have been. The old frontier game has more meat on it, which shows where the money to develop this game went (graphics and tying people online). The online requirement is bogus. Most of the time it feels like a singleplayer game anyway and the it has to go down as the most lonesome "MMO" ever.
Given Frontier Developments finances, chances are that they required servers for the game to be played won't be sustainable for any decent amount of times, so add this to the rushed release of what is essentially a tech demo for the game, my advice is to stay well clear of this game as well as this developer.

I was really looking forward to this game, being a massive fan of the original game and having in fact reached Elite status 3 times on 3 separate platforms. However this game leaves me cold as it feels like a rushed xmas cash grab.

Let me start with the good: It's beautiful and very relaxing. One definitely feels the vast emptiness of space in this game, and on the Oculus Rift it does look superb.

However you will be forever taking off that Oculus Rift because the UI is so old-hat. There are no journals or trading tools in the game, I have already given up on the Rift and moved to monitor so I can play, because the simple things we take for granted in a modern game are not there. It's as if the designers are stubbornly remaining in 1984 and they don't care how cumbersome it makes their game.

Next, not only is space empty but grouping with friends is near impossible and when you do, the next work performance is a horrid glitchy mess. I have 80Mb/s fibre and this game runs like I am on a 14.4Kb dial-up modem. Again, 1984 is looming. Ships glitch in and out, space stations appear from nowhere, collision detection is horrible. I don't think the network code is finished, not by a long measure. I would like to play this game offline to eliminate these problems but because Frontier did a very neat bait and switch one month ago, I do not have this option. This is probably the single worst technical aspect of the game.

Challenge: there is none. The game is incredibly simplistic and is just rinse and repeat gameplay. I am trading and there's a handful of commodities to trade and within my 8 hours today I have already made a small fortune. It's just too easy to pick a short haul route and rinse it. Easy but dull.

Content: There is none. This a framework for a game. Perhaps with some content it will even be a reasonable game (apart from above problems) but right now you've seen and done it all in a day.

Presentation: Really old-fashioned. The menus are clunky things straight out of 84 but with higher res fonts, there's no consistency on using controller vs mouse in various menus. The Oculus is coded for but you have to take it off. Seriously out-moded thinking here with no join up to other game elements. Really feels cheap and rushed.

Flight model: Dumbed down and in my view overly simplistic. Very arcade-like and clearly this game is designed to port to consoles easily, in fact this could be a PC version of a console game, it's that simple. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but just be aware if you are looking for a deep space-sim like experience here, you will not get it. I think the game is obviously aimed more at a console crowd than old fans of Elite and that's where the money is. So a sound business decision maybe, but it hurts PC players.

Overall this is a sad day for Elite fans who looked forward to a re-envisioning of their old classic game, there is no vision behind this release. It's just a series of clunky mini-games held together by the theme of space travel. For the amount of time and money spent on Elite Dangerous this really is a surprisingly weak release and I can only think that Frontier ran out of money to release the game in a clearly unfinished state. My advice is to wait a few months and pick this up in the sales when perhaps frontier have written some new content and crucially, fixed online multiplayer, because that is game breaking at this point in time.

I'm a fan of the original Elite from the 80s, love this re imagination of it and backed it on Kickstarter to get it going. Graphics are fantastic, flying is great, dog fighting is better, it's got the same old flavor, if they keep improving it over the next few months then it will be even better.

If you like the original you will love this!!

Whilst there are areas that need a little rebalancing/tweaking (especially where making money is concerned), the foundations laid down by Frontier are very firm and this game can only improve over time with future expansions planned such as planet landings and a first person mode to walk around space stations.

This is a slow burn game, its not instant gratification pew-pew...its a more considered approach to gaming. You build up credits, take on missions, take sides in huge space battles, explore and pretty much do whatever you want. It will take time to get the very best ships and fully upgrade them (literally days, maybe weeks, of played time).

The sheer scale of the game is astonishing...YOU HAVE A GALAXY IN YOUR PC!!! No kidding, when you start to explore a little bit it really hits you just how enormous this game is...there is so much potential in this game its beyond measure. So far Frontier have only exploited a very small section where the humans live but no doubt the Thargoids are out there and maybe other alien races waiting to make an appearance.

Graphically its very pretty, I wouldn't say its the best looking game ever but it is something to behold when you fly through an asteroid field in a nebula. As for the sound...I would not be surprised if this wins awards for sound design...it all sounds absolutely amazing, they have really done a fantastic job there.

There have been complaints its grindy, and it is to a certain extent but I would hope this is balanced out a bit when more ships are added to the game so people have extra attainable goals. The trading system isn't the best and you may need to use external tools or a pen and paper to get the most out of it.

Overall I think this will become a classic, its not for everyone and I don't think it'll appeal to the FPS crowd but if you want the best space sim out there then this is it.

Finally, I would recommend a flight sim joystick/throttle if you can stretch to it as it does add to the experience.

We have two flight modes, effectively one for combat, one for exploration. The exploration mode (supercruise) is a tricky balance of tedium (is a 1000 Ls trip long enough to put the kettle on, or check the forum), beauty, and interest (interdictions once an hour seem sensible, and evaded 50%. I mostly enjoy the exploration aspect too, locating nearby stars using parallax. Close quarters flight does take more learning, but is quite satisfying once you get the hand of it.

Personally I've not experienced any major stability issues since the early beta phase, and there has been an impressive rate of patch releases over the past month.

Although the game offers a variety of different play styles, at the moment with only a single live character per account, it is not too easy to experiment - particularly once you've spent a week or two building up credits and reputation only a catastrophic failure is going to act as an incentive to experiment. Similarly, the random quest locations (un-identified signal sources) offer a good risk/reward trade-off for someone with only 100cr to loose - not so much for someone with an insurance premium equivalent to a couple of days playing.

Missions are currently just as shallow as in any other game, but they make for an easier life than trying to work out your own trade routes. The in game economy is still in a bit of a state of flux - why a complex background simulation is useful to players, I'm not sure.

In a game which places such strong emphasis on trading, the approach to market information is bizarre. I have to pay for (almost no) information, then it expires after 24 hours of desk-time. There is no information I can log from the game (except for 3x4k screencaps per station), and loging data is actively discouraged by the EULA. 30 years ago, pen and paper was a reasonable way of keeping track of the markets - almost everyone has moved on by now. Its very disappointing to be denied the opportunity to easily log my flight history and market information. I suspect the background simulation was invented to facilitate obfuscation of this data - and this is a significant drawback if you don't want to play for several hours every day.

Multi-player aspects seem to be the main focus of this game, online only and with player driven in-game politics. I'm not convinced I want to keep track of all this and take part in massive online wars, yet the game design seems to anticipate this being the primary activity (exactly how is yet to be seen).

No doubt there will be improvements in the following months (well, after a break for Christmas), but exactly where this is leading isn't clear.

In fact, consider yourself lucky, when you manage to get put into the same instance as the other players on your friendslist. There are frequent server problems and disconnects. Elite ignores any and all advances that have been made in gameplay and story telling in the last 20 years of the industry. The gameplay is unbalanced so your only viable recourse is MINDLESS GRINDING of trade runs. PVP is non-existent because people rarely meet and if you meet someone that you would like to fight it is a 50% chance that they won't simply alt-f4 and ghost away in solo mode. Ridiculous. The games only redeeming quality is its virtual reality support, which works really well in the smaller ships. However, it breaks in the larger ships like the Type-7, because the cockpits are so large that the edge of it are in the same focal plane as the galaxy background, which makes it feel like you are sitting in a model of a ship that has a screen projecting the galaxy half a meter behind the edge of the cockpit. I have been with the game since alpha, hoping things would get better for the release, however Frontier is not listening to negative feedback and is just powering forward with blinders on. Finally, the customer support is abysmal. People are waiting 6 months to get answers to simple accounting tickets. Abysmal. Expand

Ignore the haters. This is great fun. No game this big has a smooth launch, but this game has been well tested and the bugs are minimal.

If you played Elite, this is Elite. Okay, the learning curve is a little steeper - more controls etc., but stick with it, it pays back in terms of how fun and sophisticated it gets.

If you haven't played Elite, but have wanted to fly among the stars... this is for you too. Think GTA in space in terms of how open the open play is (not in terms of content - no excessive violence, misogyny or bad language here, my ten year old plays it).

If you need to be playing in five minute chunks, and don't want to invest time learning the game... it's not for you. That's fine, I'm not judging, just being honest with you.

The community won't let this game stagnate. For your money, and no ongoing monthly fees, it's bargain of the year.

Don't try to play on keyboard and mouse. At least invest in a gamepad, better yet, a decent joystick. It will increase your enjoyment immensely.

The machine requirements are surprisingly modest, this will play on a two or three year old machine very well. At the other end, if you want a game to show off your 4k rig, this is it. The models are all built for 8k right now. If you have Oculus rift, you should already be playing it.

You could easily spend an hour just looking in detail at everything before you take that first flight outside.

This is a vast game and is not to be taken lightly so if you are after a quick shoot em up in space this is not for you, but if you want to invest time and patience in building a career and forming virtual in game and real alliances with other players of months and years then this will give in bucket loads.
The developers have pushed the game engine to new heights with 16K screen support (I don't even think that's available yet!) and full 3D immersion to try and make this game as future proof as possible, yet still it works on old machines, and even though it needs to be online to keep the universe updated in real time, its possible to play this connected on a laptop using a mobile phone as your internet receiver.
Its that online all the time that has caused a lot of controversy but it is still possible to play a solo game. Your universe will just continue to develop, expand and change in real time as the online community explore, develop new and change existing factions and cause this game to grow. This allows for players to drop in and out, meet and play with new people or even old friends - something which is available in many other games.

The changing dynamics of the universe (which games like Eve have also managed) is something that gives this game that extra over some other MMO's where a lot of what is seen as changing is simply scripted add on by the developer. Not that the developer has finished yet. There are a lot of extra's that are to be released in the future including the ability to get up out of your seat and walk around your ship.

The game play is hard, even for a veteran of the original like myself , but this is meant to be an investment and I can see myself easily spending 100+ hours and only having a few kills to my name.
    Absolutely fantastic!

I can only guess that the poor reviews are from people who are upset that the "offline" mode has been dropped. There is no way that this game should be given a 0 or 1.

Secondly it is a true representation of our galaxy with 4 billion stars (all realistic) - great planetarium. Graphics are top. Music and sfx is great. Joystick

In one year I bet we will have planetary landings, avatars and much more. I have waited 20 years. I can wait some more time.

There is no story line so to speak as you are the story and how that story progresses is very much down to you and the other Commanders out there as you journey through a dynamic adventure. No static AI scripted story, events will be driven by real peoples actions which adds to an already rich and satisfying sense of immersion.

With the planned future expansions and continued development there is certainly a lot to come that will keep the game fresh and you coming back for more.

Caution is advised though as is patience as this is not a game to gently take you by the hand and reward failure. But with determination and hard work you may just have what it takes to be Elite.

This game is more of a sandbox set in space at the moment. There's plenty to see and do for the moment, and yes there are some bugs and oddities which need to be sorted but I think Frontier are capable and willing to continue to develop this title and add to it.

This game is simply trash, and this review will be a list of why this is the case.

-Hundreds of features promised by the devs to be included on release are not in the game, many of which will be expanded upon in my next bullet points. For example, they promised 25 ships on release, and we don't have our 25 ships.
-Devs have said themselves on the forums that the features they have implemented are the "minimum implementation" of said features. How long should I expect to wait for these features to be fleshed out considering the game has been in development for years, and launches today? This game is basically an alpha in terms of actual features, and yet they are launching it as a full game.
-Offline mode has been permanently removed, despite the promises of the devs that it would be in the game during the kickstarter phase. This means no modding.
-The "multiplayer" aspect of this game is simply terrible. There is no local chat, no grouping, no coop missioning, no way to jump between systems with your friends, and no way to actually stay in an instance with your friends so that you can actually play with them. There is nothing to actually do with other players besides kill them and talk to them one at a time if you're locked on to them.
-Furthermore, the "instancing" in this game is also trash. Even if you're flying right next to a guy talking to him, you'll often find that he will just disappear without a trace because the servers decided to put him into another instance for no reason. Instances are limited to 30 or so players (not that you'd ever even find that many players together at one time), so the MP is actually designed to be completely dead.
-The "background simulation" running the universe is a complete sham. NPCs jump around with random cargo and never actually dock to sell said cargo. The sole purpose of the existence of NPCs in game right now is to make the universe feel less dead.
-Nothing happens in game unless the devs "inject an event" to make it happen. For example, "wars" which go on right now consist of ten ships fighting each other in a war zone eternally, until the "war" is ended by the dev team. You can sit in the warzone for hours killing every NPC in sight, but when the war is eventually ended by Frontier, absolutely nothing will change in game. There was no reason for the "war" to ever happen because nothing happened as a result.
-The universe is completely empty, and not in the good way. You go into supercruise, and there are "unidentified signal sources" which you can drop into to explore a bit, but every USS is just the same 3 events over and over again, so there is no reason to ever stop at them.
-Super cruise takes forever. Some players report that they spent over 1.5 hours just super cruising to a space station to complete a mission, and that while they do that they will actually play ANOTHER GAME in the mean time so that way they'll be less bored.
-Everything in game is extremely expensive, and incomes for all "professions" if you can call them that, is non-existent. It would take you many thousands of hours of grinding just to buy the expensive ships.
-Your ship accrues "wear and tear" meaning that even if you just want to fly around empty space and enjoy looking at the skybox, you can't even do that without grinding to repair your ship.
-Everything is procedurally generated. 400 billion systems empty systems that are all nearly exactly the same because some algorithm made all of them, who cares. I'd take a few hundred hand crafted systems over this procedurally generated junk any day.
-Every single in game feature is so shallow that you can master it in seconds. There is nothing in game that takes actual skill.
-There is no reason to actually do anything in game, because nothing you do changes the universe in any way. You could be the worlds best trader, pirate, bounty hunter, soldier, whatever, but nothing you do matters. All you're doing is grinding for imaginary credits.
-The devs go out of their way to make features boring or frustrating, such as super cruising as I mentioned above, or even cargo scooping. To scoop cargo, you need to fly up to every single piece and manually scoop it into your ship. Sure, it sounds like fun to do one time, but it becomes massively tedious after the nth time, particularly considering that you need to scoop to pick up other players cargo, or mine asteroids.
-Equipment for ships stocked at stations is completely randomly generated, and also randomly changes with time. I hope you like flying around the universe for 10 hours just to find a new engine for your ship. The devs are aware of this, and insist it is a feature, not a bug.

I've run out of room in this mini review, but this game is certainly not worth $50.

It looks amazing, especially through an Oculus Rift, and the moment-to-moment play is great fun. Flying, docking and throwing your ship around an asteroid field feels great. The sound is also amazing, from the rousing score you get when in combat through to the burbles and bleeps that occur when your ship is at a dead stop off a nebula in deep space. Hyperspace alone makes me want to invested

I'd say the meta-game is definitely on the minimal side, with the procedural and RNG aspects poking through at various stages. It can also feel amazing when something unexpected happens, or you have an encounter with other players, even when the outcome is your ship getting blown up. It's very evocative of something like DayZ, where there's a trudging mundanity to things, and suddenly your thrown into something different and unexpected. These contrasts are what make the game so alluring for me.

It remains to be seen where Frontier take this game, and how much richness and dynamism are woven into the galaxy. There are a slew of features that have been left on the cutting room floor, and I sincerely hope they are picked back up and added in. For now, I'm very happy to play this as it is on release day.

However, I am not so much a fanboy that I cannot see that Elite: Dangerous is not feature complete at launch. There are some real balance issues as well as missing or poorly implemented features. All of the issues this game has comes up to a single point deducted in my mind, because the core of the game is getting into a space ship, setting a destination and a purpose for yourself, and flying into the unknown. On that score this game delivers!
The beauty of this game is in the universe in which it is played, namely the Milky Way Galaxy, in its 400 billion stars entirety. You begin the game in a small ship, with an anemic fuel tank and jump range. You are equipped with a pair of nearly-harmless lasers and a power distributor prone to overheating. With this ship, the "Sidewinder", you can perform missions or haul a few goods from one system to another until you have a few tens of thousands of credits and can begin looking at your upgrade options. Do you want to be a bounty hunter? lasers, shields, and power distributed. Trader? Frame shift drive and cargo expansion. Explorer? Frame shift drive and a Fuel scoop. How you play is up to you, but some paths are easier to walk than others.
As you progress, you will earn money to upgrade components, then purchase a new ship and start the process again. As the ships get bigger, the best comments get more and more expensive. A ship that costs 300,000 could easily cost closer to 3,000,000 when properly upgraded for a specific role. Realizing that, it is generally better to forget about what a higher tier of equipment or ship will cost and enjoy the game as you're playing. One day you will be cashing in a dozen bounty vouchers or delivering 50 tons of iridium and realize that you have enough for a new frame shift drive and, lucky days!, the station has one!

Elite: Dangerous is the type of game that is most rewarding when spread out over a long time. Players that treat it as an MMO with levels to grind out will find that they can earn millions of credits in a weekend, but then it feels hollow and dull afterwards. Players that find something they enjoy doing will earn credits slower, but aren't likely to get bored of it. They are also more likely to encounter the evolving storyline, the gameplay that expands from faction reputation, and the hidden wonders that exist in the Elite: Dangerous universe.

It should be stated that this game may not be for everyone. You will not own space stations, you will not craft better components, and it can be incredibly unforgiving. Your 150,000,000 Anaconda battleship may lose to a well equipped and well piloted 150,000 Viper. You may find that your chosen profession cannot earn the credits needed to upgrade without either a serious time investment or branching out into other professions you enjoy less. Those who savor PvP may be sorely disappointed that players can jump between an Open play environment and a closed off "solo, but still online" environment that places them beyond anyone's reach.

Elite: Dangerous requires patience. First, patience with the developers as they iron out wrinkles and finish some features prior to the first DLC. Beyond that, patience in the game as it will not hold your hand or give you quick rewards at even intervals along your path of progression. Space is a cold, dark place where death comes suddenly and unexpectedly and with nasty consequences. (The unwritten law is "don't fly what you can't afford", because if you do not have the credits to pay the replacement cost of ~2% of your total ship value, you walk away without the ship or the credits. 2% of 3,000,000 can leave an unsuspecting player in tears.)

If you can handle the dangers, and you are patient enough that earning better ships and equipment doesn't feel like a chore, then Elite: Dangerous is a universe you can reside in for years to come. As for me, I'll see you in space, Commanders!

From start to finish, this is a game where you shape your own future. As such, this game demands unusually much from a player's imagination in order to enjoy it to its fullest. It also relies a lot on the intangible sense of wonder felt by exploring star systems. I don't think Elite: Dangerous suits everyone, but I also think it may suit others better than many other games have for years.

The context is you're a space Commander, starting out in a modern spaceship of limited performance, travelling between stations in star systems with a variety of ways to make money and trade your way up through a series of more powerful, better equipped, larger vessels.

One of the strengths of the game is that, given the basic mechanics (you have a ship with a certain cargo capacity and weapons loadout), there are a variety of play styles that allow you to be successful. You can enter a station, buy cargo at a price that looks cheap, transport it to another station that buys it at a higher price, and pocket the profits. What you spend the money on is up to you, but if you like that playing style you can use it to buy bigger, fancier transport, and accumulate weapons that would make any attack on your business an unwise proposition.

Or you can forget the cargo hauling and just go straight for the career path of being the biggest badass killer fighter pilot in the Galaxy. You'll be rewarded with bounties for killing 'wanted' players (predominantly NPC's) and accumulate that money to trick out your ship to be even more Dangerous.

Trading and combat are probably the most popular playing styles, but if interested you can try and make money by 'mining' (you collect the raw materials yourself from space/asteroids and sell it in suitable stations) or 'smuggling' (have a penchant for 'illegal' goods and use various stealth methods to sneak into suitable stations to sell it, avoiding nosy Fed cops as you do so).

Although untimately simple to play, E:D is a large, complex simulation and through the alpha/beta/gamma pre-production the developers have iteratively tuned the model to support an effective balance between profitable trading versus combat. I think it's fair to say the various playing styles coexist reasonably well, i.e. if you're a trader you can expect to get on with your business without too much interference, and combateers can enjoy a good scrap without feeling like every engagement is suicidal. There are a *lot* of NPC's (ships flown by the game AI) so combat pilots have plenty to shoot at, and the designation of large areas of the Galaxy as e.g. 'Federation' or 'Alliance' space means that bad behaviour in that space, such as killing pilots that are not 'wanted' status carries an unattractive penalty.

On the down side, Elite:Dangerous is a lot to take in for the first few minutes you play the game. Like WTF do all these graphics on my spaceship dashboard mean? How the hell am I supposed to fly this spaceship through that entry aperture in the space station? What am I supposed to do once I'm in there? You will find your spaceship shredded to pieces by the station defence lasers when you try and 'dock' without having requested permission first. But, when you start out there really is no downside to having your spaceship blown up, you respawn with a new one, and there are 10 simple tutorial mini-tasks that get you up-and-running and have a good start to your career. After that the Galaxy is yours for the taking.

So the game's not perfect, but I graded it a ten because after hours in the E:D universe it becomes increasingly clear just how much visionary brilliance has gone into the crafting of the game. It's not just another FPS. And the Space Opera graphics are awesome.

This review was written after playing the pre-release versions of the game, up to and including the production 1.0.0.0 version of the game released today.

It looks alright on a low end system and breath taking on a high end one. Sound fits the game profile well, weapons, engines and the universe sound as you'd expect a space sim to, all down to the cool computer voice and hyper drive explosions. Gameplay for Elite veterans or space sim/flight sim enthusiasts is easier but expect a steep learning curve in a game that rewards for practicing and putting time into. This isn't an Eve Online type game so don't expect an MMO with stats and numbers this is pure skill based flight game, there is some grinding but you won't be grinding 10,000 bore you'll be flying to space stations in different systems trading, mining and fighting.

I love this game - but I will say that it's not for everyone. Part simulation, part game, I would suggest that the same people who say it's a 'shell' of a game, or that there's 'nothing to do', sound like petulant bored teens on a Saturday night, or people who came out of the Lord of the Rings movies saying, ' All that happened were a bunch of people walking around...' (I actually heard this!)

In some ways, I'd compare this to a 'Simcity in space', only you're not building a city, you're building your own personal empire.

You have to have patience and a little luck to make things go your way in the game. Persistence pays off... Most of the time - but that's the key isn't it? Games aren't fun without risk, and there's a LOT of risk here.

This isn't 'Halo'. There's no hint book to get you through tough missions and reveal all the answers. No 'boss' creatures (other than capital ships), and griefers live a short, unhappy life in the game, due to a bounty system that all but assures death to those who fire at will on anything that moves (especially space stations!)

That said, there is combat, even if it's mostly optional. BUT, there is also trading, mining, exploring, and pirating - plus the joy of owning and upgrading your own ships. This may appeal to you. It may not. Frankly, I don't care, but I'm getting back in the game now...

Watching the game develop over the past several months, it's been noticeable how dedicated and competent Frontier have been in implementing new features and debugging existing systems. There's been missteps along the way, as with any project, but what has come out of the process is a solid game with a lot to offer, and a huge huge potential for expansion.

If you are a fan of flight simulators and space games, don't miss this amazing update of the ultimate space trading game. Elite.

Gameplay-wise, the flight mechanics are excellent. Making space combat fun is very challenging in space games since it's empty, but FD managed to nail it. They achieved a good balance between realism and fun.

The other gameplay mechanics are extremely fun and have good depth. Some aspects are still barebones, but the potential is there and with time they will certainly mature to the level of the flight mechanics, outfitting, and combat.

Overall, a great game that will get even better as more content is released.

Each will reward you with Credits, which you can use to buy bigger, more specialized ships, and fit them for an specific role or to be multi-purpose. It should be noted, payoff greatly varies from role to role, and it seems it could be balanced further. Trading for example is not that good as of now, but Frontier is addressing those balance issues.

There are a lot of reviews criticizing the "lack" of content in this game, but take them with a grain of salt: Elite: Dangerous will not grab your hand and tell you what to do, YOU create your own story. However I do think that Release Build seems like it is missing a few features that could make this galaxy a lot more vivid, however FPS and planetary landing modules are on their way and that should solve this by a good amount.

What about Frontier as a developer? I started playing at Beta 2 and the game has progressed so much since then, UI has evolved, bugs have been fixed, new features implemented and rebalanced (somewhat), and a successful Gamma phase that led to the most stable "online-only" release I've seen in some time. This game is still being developed and there is more content to be added, it can only get better.

This game is Buy 2 Play with microtransactions. Don't be afraid though, this is not a Pay2Win game, because you can only buy paintjobs with real money.

ED looks great but the gameplay is a bit hollow. Atm a lot of the things discussed in the DDA-archives are NOT in the game, like for example wings. FD has released a good platform (if MP works OK with release that is) to build upon and they have said they will build upon it. To be fair atm I would give it a 6 but future improvements could make this a 8 or 9.

Most people will probably start by Trading; this is the safest way to make money which will allow you to upgrade your ship to the very highest specs in order that you might have a chance should you get involved in combat with another ship.
This however in my opinion is putting off the real game, forget flight simulators this is space and the manoeuvrability of your space ship is simply beyond comprehension of most players. Try to think out of the box, your ship is capable of the most fantastic combat manoeuvres and what you really need to be doing as soon as your able is practicing these breath-taking manoeuvres so that you are able to become Elite & feared by all who encounter you.
A lot of people are upset about losing single player off line but who the hell in this day & age wants to play a game on their own?
Get out there practice, and see if you can take on a real Space Pilot, I guarantee that you will feel an overwhelming adrenalin kick like no other when you’re in combat with another human player.

Currently Elite has a decent framework in place, but there's no real 'game' there -- you can literally experience all of the content in a few hours and it changes extremely little regardless of what system you go to or what ship you're flying.

    Amazing sound.
A gazillion star systems to go 'explore'.

    Cons:
Every single gameplay system -- trading, mining, pirating, bounty hunting -- is simplistic in the extreme, most are broken in one way or another, and frankly all of it has been done far better elsewhere.

Eleventy gazillion systems to explore means little when the vast, vast bulk of them are basically identical.

Multiplayer? What's that? The game's multiplayer features are so barebones as to essentially be nonexistent.

Online only. This wouldn't be a con if the netcode (especially the perplexing decision to go with P2P architecture in an online-only game) wasn't so flaky, if there were actual multiplayer features that worked, or if there was, well, any meaningful reason whatsoever for it the game to be online, but the netcode is flaky as hell, there aren't meaningful (or even usable) multiplayer features, and there's no real reason for the game to need to be online-only other than as DRM.

Basically Frontier has created a universe simulation that you, the player, have little to no effect on. It's a place where you can fly around and see the same systems, the same stations, and the same ships 400 billion times. Sadly they forgot to include any gameplay beyond the most barebones in there.

At best the game is being pushed out the door six months too early, at worst Frontier has actually made the game they intended and they really do think that copying a thirty year old game with some new graphics will do well. Either way, best to avoid this one for a while and see if they eventually actually add some gameplay before it crashes and burns.

What a massive disappointment. If you thought Braben's previous two space games were bad, this beats them hands down. This can barely be called a game. It is a astronomy simulator consisting entirely of pretty graphics, nice sound, and five insultingly boring mini-games. Plus a ton of bugs and crippling server problems. AVOID!

As an alpha backer i had the pleasure to play this game for months now and each hour was tremendous fun. Technically this game is outstanding, e.g. all my peripherals worked out of the box, for my x52 hotas i only had to change 2 buttons, rest was perfect! Immersion, gfx and especially the sound is amazing.

I would give it a 8 or 9 normally, due to silly low scores for a really good

Simply a beautiful game. Take your time to earn your ships and your kills. Not a game for those that think 14 hours to get to endgame is too long. A true sandbox space sim that shows what it's rivals have tried to imitate. Been playing since alpha and have watched the polish go on over the last few weeks. And so much more to come. Elite: Dangerous looks great, but it's a poor-man's EVE: Online. A single player game shoe-horned into an incomplete MMO framework. Definitely not worth the money & there is no way Elite will be able to stay afloat without either subs or adding pay2win features.

First minute the game takes your breath away and then it entertains you for another couple of hours to end up like a meditative tool for hard working individuals. What a waste and shame for a game in such beautiful environment. [Issue#253]

Everyone who played the original game back in the 80's, should be right at home. It's the 21st Century version of "Elite." But newer, uninitiated players may find it strangely desolate and repetitive. A grand space simulation, aimed at the series' hardcore fans.

You can focus on the journey, not the destination – even when some "road work" signs will bother you for the time being in the reincarnated Elite. But their numbers are declining with every new update so a thirty-year-old vision becomes more and more complete.
