This game represents everything wrong with kickstarter projects as it stands.

I also think it would also be very enlightening to see where the positive reviews are coming from geographically, I have a feeling that Europeans (and especially the British) will be more forgiving, same with gamers that remember the original Elite like myself. Which is probably while I'm so sorely disappointed, there was a ton of potential here and it was squandered.

My biggest beef with this game is that offline play was promised, and now it will never happen, which is an indie developer taking the same kind of stance as Ubisoft and EA on always-online DRM. This is not a welcome development. I wish I could vote with my wallet but I already backed them, based on what turns out to be a major lie about offline play. I work in remote areas where there isn't always an internet connection and not being able to play a game that I backed while thinking and being told that it would fit my use case is not acceptable to me at all.

Hopefully Star Citizen will not share the same issues and offer a deeper experience at the same time. As it stands, you can do everything in Elite: Dangerous within a few hours. That wouldn't normally be an issue in and of itself, if gameplay in those few hours is fun, challenging or engaging. This game is none of those things.

In short, I'm disappointed and do not recommend that anyone purchase this game as it stands.

Elite Dangerous is the best space sim there is. Excellent graphics, amazing audio, fantastic gameplay. The game lacks at the moment a sort of purpose or a guideline that many players maybe looking for but for a game so big (a map of this size never existed in a game before) a single player scenario wouldn't have covered what is actually there to experience.

Explore space, trade rare goods, do some bounty hunting, smuggle some goods you pirated, buy new ships, etc. Its about the journey not about how fast you can grind to an anaconda ship. Some people on here are mad the game isn't casualized, the game doesn't hold your hand AT ALL!. There are normal tutorials like docking, and combat but thats it. You have to figure out the game mechanics yourself and that is very rewarding once you do. Whether you saw some guy on reddit post about best mining locations or you met a commander(real player) tell you about a rare trading route, its all very cool to figure these things out that aren't labeled "GO TO THIS OBJECTIVE".

What I suggest to new players is to ask around what actions get a bounty on your head because a lot of new players expect the game to be unforgiving when they come in but its not... You can easily amass 100k worth of bounties cause you did illegal things. Ill list some things that get you bounties:

    Some tips to avoid bounties:
    - If you are not in an "anarchy" govt system (you can check govt, factions, etc in the galaxy map) attacking clean ships (you can check this after scanning them) will net you a bounty, killing them gives you a much bigger bounty.

    - If you find goods laying around and pick them up getting scanned by federal security ships will net you a huge fine for carrying stolen goods, thus to sell these you should go to a place with low security (check galaxy map) or there are specific manuevers to smuggle them into stations (one is to be around 7km away from entrance of station and very fast go in the station doors because once you are inside fed ships cannot scan you). You sell goods like this at the black market under the "contacts" tab in many stations.

-Do not do the missions which as you to kill civilian or trading ships, these net you a bounty far bigger than the payout, the only reason to do these is to get higher with the specific group that is giving you the mission.

Some early game tips for new players:
    - Do hauling missions when you first start out under the "bulletin board" in stations, these are quick easy and safe starting money.

    - ALWAYS ALWAYS ask for docking permission from stations before going in otherwise they WILL SHOOT YOU after a given period. To do this go under your contacts tab on the left UI of your ship and clicking on the station, ask for docking permission. Check which dock number you are assigned and land there, take out your landing gear (L on pc) before landing. trying to land in wrong one will land you infraction and get you killed.

    - DO not shoot near stations, they will kill you instantly. You will see a message saying that a place is a "no fire zone".

-Before jumping to another part of space you have to retract hardpoints (weapons, landing gear, cargo hold) otherwise you cannot jump. you can check if landing gear and cargo hold are out on the bottom right. U is to deploy or retract weapons. Also you cannot jump if you are "mass locked" meaning you are too close to a station, keep getting further away until you are not mass locked anymore.

-When you are buying parts for your ship check your power consumption on the right, if your power consumption exceeds supplied, your ship will turn off stuff like life support or shields when deploying things like weapons ( you can sort of get around this by setting unneeded things to lower priority on the right UI but its better to get a bigger powerplant.

-when you are buying parts check your FSD jump distance, this laden is when your cargo is at max, unladen is when its not. Make sure you don't make this too low and can't jump anywhere (check galaxy map to see how far things are. You can increase this by buying lower mass parts, better thrusters or by getting a better fsd drive.

    - REMEMBER TO REFUEL. You can buy a fuel scoop which lets you get fuel by going close to starts but its very dangerous. you can refuel at any nearby stations. IF you run out of fuel to jump in deep space with no station nearby, you are screwed. Just self destruct on the right otherwise you will just die a slow painful death.

Thats all I can think of for now. Hopefully it helps a new ED player looking on here for reviews.
    GOOD LUCK COMMANDER!

This game keeps getting better and better. My friends and I got into a PVP dogfight in a low energy wake instance after trying to perform an interdiction on another apparently random player... Well that player had a friend and... 2 ships (Cobra, Viper) vs us 3 (Sidewinder, sidewinder and Viper). We got the wrong end of the stick but boy was it fun!

I really wish this game was successful, I really wish Frontier didn't run out of money and rush this out the door - instead what we have is a shallow instanced online only mess that has no multiplayer features.

Let me just be clear here: This is an online only game that you CANNOT play with your friends. Everything is instanced and there is NO way to easily switch instances. You CANNOT reliably play with friends. There is no grouping mechanic. No group missions etc...but the game is online only!

I can almost get past that massive blunder if not for the fact that the game play is unbelievably shallow. There is no grand plot. That's fine - but there isn't much of anything else to do. The entirety of what the game has to offer can be experienced in one sitting. I'm serious. In less than 6 hours you can do all there is to do in ED. Never mind that half the things that you CAN do in ED are not worth doing at all. Combat is horrid as all ships handle like the fat space trucks that they are and bounty rewards are too meager to justify the effort. In fact - bounty hunting rewards are so low that if you die once in 20 bounties, you will lose money. Exploration is also completely meaningless and pays very very poorly.

In short, right now, there are only two things to do in ED, fly from station to station hauling cargo or mine rocks. Both of these things are pure tedium. There is no reason to do them except to get the bigger ship that will let you haul/mine more. That's it. There is nothing more.

I think one of the main issues is the idea that players should have to manually do EVERYTHING. I mean, sure docking is fine, it's old school and you have the option of a docking computer.

But no autopilot when going from one station to another? Why? It's not as if you can click 'A' and then go make a coffee, cos you could be interdicted at any moment, but it sure as hell beats having to make sure you leave SuperCruise at precisely the right moment. It's a manual mechanic that wasn't even going to be IN the final game (it was added after alpha design discussions), so I don't know what was going to be in it's place.

Combat is clunky and slow, the deliberate crippling of yaw movement sounded like a good idea at first, but in practice, it's a forced mechanic that just doesn't make the slightest bit of sense in space. Even with it's many many issues, SC's combat is so much better.

Even the landing procedure is just odd... Ok, I get the reasoning behind there being no keybind for 'Request Docking Permission' - it will make macro-trading a lot more difficult - but it's not hard to overcome, and in the end is just an awkward way of yet again making manual control more prominent.

    Mining is pointless.

This game is literally a timesink of the worst kind. If there was a bit more automation for travelling, then it might not be quite so bad. The laughable idea that your ship's navigation computer has absolutely no data on any other system except your starting one, and a couple of others (which I don't understand how or why), unless you purchase them from the map screen (not from Cartography, like you USED to be able to - another convoluted design change), makes no sense to me.

And WHY you get money for 'discovering' stars and planets is beyond me, considering that data for this already exists to buy! Naturally, if you visit a truly unexplored system (which mathematically, you will, if you travel far enough), you SHOULD get paid oodles of credits, and would make exploring worthwhile - but exploring a system WHEN THERE ARE PLAYER SHIPS IN THE SAME AREA is utterly stupid.

Elite is like an egg without a yolk, a sandwich without filling, beer without alcohol.

    And it's boring as hell.

The game needs at least another 6 months in development, but as it's now officially released this is my review. Graphically it's fine, actually quite pretty with a slightly cartoon look to it. The problems come with content, there's nowhere near enough for a game at launch, very little variation in missions, most are carry object A to location B. Destroy ship A at location B or go get object A and bring it back here. Pretty poor. Combat is OK, just OK.

There are a few other things you can do such as exploration which literally means fly somewhere and point you ship at a planet/star whatever for a few seconds then sell the 'information' for a small amount of money. You can randomly attack people and see f they drop anything, this is apparently the piracy part of the game. That's pretty much it. Oh you can 'trade' as well but this is basic to say the least.

Elite Dangerous is very buggy in general lacking enough content to justify been called a released game. After the offline debacle the developers are keen to emphasize the game is an MMO, but it lacks even the most basic elements of MMO play, apart from the 'grind'. Such a shame.

On the right track! I will start with the bad: There is a lack of content at the moment within the game and the multiplier aspect of it is pretty much non-existent but as this a title that's still being actively developed, you can expect those to be improved in the future. I took part in the testing process since Alpha and I have to say that Frontier knows what it's doing. Features wereOn the right track! Features were being implemented fast and reliable, with fixes coming out literally next day (Say Beta 3.0 was released on Thursday, Beta 3.01 would be released on Friday fixing major bugs and Beta 3.02 would be release on Monday to fix minor bugs). I'm confident that in a couple of months this will be quite a different game.

As for the good in it... where do i start:
    - Looks amazing - the cobra engine is a beast, the title looks absolutely fantastic and the aesthetic is amazing. The cheap ships look and feel cheap while the expensive ones seem very luxurious.
    - Sounds amazing - the people that made the sound effects and music for this game should have a statue built in their honer. Find a youtube video of a hyperspace jump, get your best headphones on, full screen it and have a look. There is no question about it.
    - Feels amazing - the bigger the ship, the heavier it feels. Inertia is a real thing and you have to take it into account. The thrusters on your ship will do everything in their power to keep your mistakes in line but the blame of crashing into an asteroid is 100% yours - until you turn flight assist off then good bye all control over anything; you better have lightning reflexes for this mode.
    - Performs amazing: The minimum system requirements are those of a mid-range PC from 6 years ago. On my system which has a GTX660 (not Ti) I can run the game at 55-60FPS with all details on Max @1080p. Frontier do not kid around when it comes to optimization.
    - Support for all sorts of immersion technology including Track IR, FaceTrackNoIr and Oculus Rift.
    - Evolving universe: Every aspect of the universe is player-influenced and determined by player behavior. Revolutions in start-systems get started because a group of 10-20 players decided to help out the local rebel party. There is an in-built news system that reflects how the galaxy evolves and how the balance of power gets affected. The game-world feels truly alive!

Even with the current shortage in content and non-existing MP you will have plenty to do for the first 100-200 hours and unless you blitz through those in 10 days, by the time you're done playing Frontier have probably released more stuff for you to enjoy.

For now 9/10 because of missing features and content. Once those are in I will change the grade of the game but for what it is I believe this is fair.

Negative reviews seem to come from disgruntled Kickstarter backers (guys, Kickstarter = "donation" NOT "equity stake") winging about no off-line mode (it's 2014 and you havn't got internet or a mobile phone to teather? c'mon) or from MMO players who don't get that space is a big place.

The stories happen in specific star systems and if you are not in them, then you wont be able to get involved. You can still pick up missions, but you have to make the effort to decide how you want your story to unfold.

Personally, I love trading and exploring and picking up the odd bounty by killing pirates. I don't want the biggest ship, I don't want the most money or kills. I just enjoy flying around the galaxy, buying and selling and taking out the odd bad guy. So far I have logged about 100 hours and my only challenge is finding time to play.

The missions are randomized and based off templates, so you'll see the same mission pop up at different stations with a different item to acquire, or person to kill.

Unlike the X series of games, each planet/star only has ONE station in it. And there's only a small handful of station designs. So while there are literally billions of systems to visit, they all seem the same.

Right now the esthetics, visuals and controls of the game feel FINISHED, and really nicely refined. It feels *really* good to fly especially with a nice joystick system. However the content is painfully lacking. I've spent a LOT of time grinding, doing research on best trading runs and making lots of credits, but I actually have nothing to buy with all these credits.

    - I can't make a fleet
    - I can't build a station
    - I can't make my own empire
    - Very, very limited number of equipment/customizations to buy for my ship
    - and even if I could customize my ship the way I wanted, I can't even see it from the exterior, except in "outfitting mode"

As far as a trader is concerned, all I can do is just buy a bigger ship, and continue... grinding with absolutely no end point. And when I get the "elite" trader status, then what?

Ok, but we do have a REALLY fantastic sandbox right now. So I'm just hoping this was planned by the developers to release the "heart" of the game so to speak, by a series of expansion packs. I do sincerely hope there is something amazing planned to input into this cool world, because it has amazing potential.

    Right now unfortunately, feels pointless.

Those complaining about a story, its not WoW, or Dragon Age it's a space simulator. Ever heard anyone brag about the story in Microsoft's Flight Simulator? Exactly. The flight model is a bit off since you feel like you're flying an airplane in space. Mining is more about finding a good rock to mine, like it was during the gold rush. There is no "minigame" in mining your literally outfit your ship with mining gear & head out to an asteroid field. How do you find a good asteroid or a good asteroid field to mine in? By learning how to read the data you're given & learning what is actually valuable. You then break off pieces of rock with your laser, collect them so the material makeup can be analyzed by your ship (yes you have to physically fly around and collect the pieces of asteroid SORRY POINT & CLICK fans again SPACE SIM). The galaxy map is huge and will take some time to learn to use. Missions consists of ways to make cash for those not good enough at killing guys or that don't want to risk mining. The "missions" are basically independent contracts for you to take goods from A to B in X amount of time, they should be called jobs so the WoW fans can stop crying. There is no "story" around this because its a space sim. You have a ship, and things need to be shipped, what the job yes or no? Now the fun comes in getting those goods from A to B, as someone is always trying to make money through piracy. Everything else is all space sim, if your looking for a point and click game, keep moving. You will have to learn to actually fly your ship. If you're used to games spoon feeding your ego so you can feel like the man, again keep moving. The only reason you feel like the man while playing Elite is because you can fly that ship, kill those pirates, found the sweetest asteroid field out in the middle of nowhere and you're headed by to a space station with a sweet load. There are so many system to go to dual star solar systems, white dwarf, just crazy.

(CO-OP) It is very hard to hook up with your friends as you can spawn very far apart since this is space (its kinda big you know). But really this doesn't matter as much since you have to figure out how to go about making your own fortune. Again it's not Wow where you raiding together.
(Trading) Was impacted by aggressive NPC's but this has been addressed. Again since there is no hand holding you have to figure out how to make money trading. You have to learn who imports or exports what and at what price.
The biggest point I can make its that people see MMO and think Wow in space, one more time IT'S A SPACE SIM.

Have seen some small bugs, but nothing game spoiling. Sure, it is shallow exactly on a level with the previous Elites ,and the multi-player aspects are lacking. But as I expected Elite, it is exactly that and does it brilliantly. I just love the atmosphere, sounds, fighting and mainly, the immersion. Only thing I'm concerned is the current difficulty-level: once you know how to fly well, the npcs are way too easy. I hope there will be harder challenges in the updates.
At the core, gameplay-wise, it feels like a Euro Truck -simulator in the emptiness of the deep space, spiced with optional combat. If that sounds like your thing, it is really good. But right now, if you're looking for deep story, complicated multi-player experience or anything else than straightforward space-flight-simulation - better wait for the updates and expansions.

I originally gave Elite a 4 given the seemingly lack of guidance at all in the game but then I started actually playing the game. I also checked the forums and saw all the help, videos and manuals, even those made by the community like Forger's.

Now I am enjoying it immensely. This is a space sandbox with all options open for players. No stry line, except the one you make for yourself.

Its an open world game so you decide what your story is situated inside a dynamic galaxy which responds to what all the players do. Right now I'm battling a slave rebellion and fighting against a blockade by the Federation as key factions continue their power struggle throughout the galaxy.

There are a few things that need improvement upon such as better functions for group play, which I understand is coming early in 2015. But in all honesty I find myself in gamer heaven right now. I just can't stop playing it..

I suspect I'll be playing this title for years to come, and it will only improve and become more feature rich over time. Don't let the whiners put you off, its a fantastic game.

Unfortunately, the game that was released is not the game I imagined it to be. If you were expecting an MMO, I hate to disappoint, but this is not an MMO in any sense of the word.

Interacting with other players when not completely broken is almost impossible due to the sheer size of the universe. Although huge, I've never played a game that has felt so empty. I imagined roaming the galaxy pirating and bounty-hunting other players in epic battles of wits, but I'm lucky if I even see another player. Not to mention the hours upon hours of tedious grinding it takes to be even remotely equipped to do so.

Playing with your friends is just impossible in the current version not only because the game lacks even the most basic of social tools, but because the game punishes you for playing with other players. Bounties are only awarded to the person with the last kill, missions are given and rewarded individually, you can't even see your friends half the time, multiplayer is just a downright mess.

Don't get me wrong, the game is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful, and the sound design might be the best I've ever heard in a video game. But great visuals and audio does not a game make. It's just a shame that the game design is so horrid. There is no story to speak of. Every mission follows the same of several archetypes: "Kill this", "Deliver that", "Fetch this", etc. Missions are boring and feel as though there is no consequence, especially when you're offered the exact same mission seconds after turning it in.

The actual gameplay is mind-numbingly grindy. Most MMOs get away with this because the grind is for a greater purpose, but in Elite the only reason to grind is so that you can grind some more. It kills what very little motivation I had to play the game in the first place. The combat is pretty good, but it's not enough to carry the game through.

There is also so little in regards to depth it's absurd. There is an entire universe of systems, yet there is hardly any difference between the systems. The missions are the same, the factions are functionally the same, it's the same system over and over with a couple of variables tweaked along the way. Ships are "customizable" in that the more money you have the better your ship is. There are no side-grades to speak of except maybe weapons where really only 2 or 3 are actually viable.

At the end of the day, the game is just disappointing. Modern graphics and stunning audio coupled with gameplay from the 80's. I think it's naive to say game design hasn't improved in the last 30 years, and it's a shame that this game decided that it didn't have to.

The economy is not wholly player-driven, but it is definitely influenced strongly by player actions.

Multi-player support is somewhat rudimentary at present, but that is set to change very soon. You can already team up with other like-minded agitators by taking on individual jobs to help destabilise governments, trigger wars, and change the fate of entire planets, which is quite cool.

Most of the time in this galaxy, however, you are the flea on the dog's back, hopping about, and hoping not to get scratched. If your inner Han Solo/Mal Reynolds longs to set out in the cold, uncaring void and "blaze your own trail" (as the blurb goes) - then this game is probably for you.

Given the average level of intelligence on display in some of the negative user reviews thus far, and the agenda that seems to pop up with tedious regularity (i.e. "no offline mode means I can't get a free copy so I'll rage against it's continued existence"), those who read these reviews can probably make their own minds up about who is the target audience and who isn't.

Gameplay is king however and this is where the title falls, not so much down but pretty much flat on it's face.

It's about as dynamic as a siesta. Once when coming out of supercruise, i was switching between the game and candy crush and i saw another ship controlled by a player. Then he disappeared, i still don't know if it was real or a mirage brought on by my brain's insistency to go into standby. Cargo scooping for the nth time made me cry.
The game is solely geared for you to accrew new ships, everything is done for money. There is a big grind to level. It wouldn't be a problem, if it wasn't so boring

The always online thing is mind boggling. If there was any sort of multiplayer element in the game i would understand but there is none that i can see. Perhaps i'm missing something fundamental. Speaking of fundaments, you would think this sort of decision would be taken long before the game is released. It stinks frankly.

I try to use adjectives that others don't for fear of plagiarism but if i was to sum up the game it would be 'the shell looks promising but not nearly enough GAME'

It has plenty of room to grow during post-release development, and does suffer a bit from underdeveloped features and a steep learning curve. There is actually a lot of depth in the political simulation (which is still being tweaked), but a lack of tutorials and the fact that Elite: Dangerous departs from the standard economy sim is space model means that some players may miss it. But at its heart, it's a game of discovery, not only in the literal sense of exploring the insanely huge galaxy, but also in finding out how that galaxy works.
It has no campaign as such, but Frontier are injecting story "hooks" in the form of events which players can get involved with and influence the outcomes of. The current storyline is a struggle for the Imperial throne. As well as the injected storylines, others naturally develop as a consequence of the many thousands of local factions goals and statuses, and how players respond and interact with them.
As an MMO, it's radically different to what the term usually implies. There are a massive number of players in the same persistent galaxy, all of whom have an influence on it, but the galaxy is so huge that it can be quite rare to meet other players. The game doesn't artificially force players together, so you'll need to make more of an effort than is usual if you do want to play with other people. There are also no standard MMO features at the time of writing, so guilds, parties and chat channels are absent - though they'll be developed as time goes on.
But what the game does right now, it does very well. The flight model is fun, there are plenty of different activities to engage in, the background simulation brings a lot of unusual (and often overlooked) detail to the proceedings, and the galaxy model is a work of art. If you've played previous versions of Elite, you'll have a good feel for the game and where it is heading.
It is, however, a niche game and always will be. It follows its own path within the space sim genre and is very different in feel, aim and effect to EvE or the X games, and this may throw some players until they get a handle on the Elite-style gameplay.
As previously mentioned, the game will benefit from post-release development (which is relatively common these days for large-scale multiplayer games), so if you're looking for a fully featured game, I'd say leave it for perhaps six months before buying it. If you're happy to get in early and be part of the game as it grows and unfolds, then go for it. What is there right now is solid, stable and immensely playable even though there is plenty more to be added to it.

You can play as pirate, bounty hunter, mercenary, trader, explorer etc... alone or with friends. Influencing the main factions around to get the most out of a system or participating in the story line driven by major faction injected events...

All in all probably the best space sim around for a long time.

I was a huge fan of Elite 2 back in the day, but I'm not going to just fervently defend this game based on misty-eyed nostalgia. At best, this is a tech demo. The graphics are great, the soundtrack beautiful. Space is modelled well, in that it is vast - and almost entirely empty.

The launch trailer is nothing like the experience of the game. If anything, I'd say this is probably the most accurate portrayal of the likely future of life in space. Obtain ship. Obtain cargo contracts. Ship cargo from system to system. There is combat, yes, but it's more shoe-horned in than feeling an integral part of the game.

And right now, that's it folks. You go to a starport, either buy a contract or a cargo mission (or if you spend the credits, find out the best trade routes) and go. Earn money. Once you've earned enough, go and buy a bigger ship. Continue until you have the biggest ship you can get and earn credits into all eternity.

The ship designs are great - but you'll rarely see your own ship in game, as the whole game takes place from inside the cockpit. This is by design, but ultimately makes you feel like you're watching a TV programme about space, whilst fumbling around the menu system. The menus work very well, which is great as this is where you'll spend most of your time.

But the bugs. Oh, the bugs. I can't even log in. The forums are full of angry customers and no sign of the support team. It reflects very poorly on the company and the future of this title.

It could be great, but it feels like a race with the likes of Star Citizen and No Man's Sky, and Elite Dangerous is off the line early and half-dressed, with no warmup.

The focus is on replicating the feel of piloting your own space ship with 15 currently available and this rising to 30, each with a different feel. The game has already won VR space simulator of the year and even with with pre-consumer DK2 Oculus rift is jaw dropping good. The game still has areas where content is light and requires imagination to fill in the blanks, with more content to come with a ethos of other MMOs that it is never finished. Some reviewers have complained of nothing to do and it does rely on you making the story and not being hand held through it. If you are willing to be creative and enjoy the aspects it does well, you are in for a treat. It is the type of game what you could leave it for a couple of months and them come back to see new features and content that engages you again, The more people that support this the better this game will become and it will grow into something exceptional. The development team have a real passion and if you listen to David Braben you can hear he is in this for the long haul to make his dream space game. Combat, Exploration, Mining & Trading are the main pillars of game play and are immediately accessible and have virtually no barrier for entry (unlike other online games where you've got to amass a small fortune of currency or spend hours leveling up before you can access certain content)

The learning curve can seem steep at first, and the game doesn't get easier as you go (you just get better at it)
It's an extremely gratifying experience flying into a star port and docking your ship with ease, while watching beginner pilots spend 15 minutes trying to just point their ship in the direction.
Don't listen to people who complain that docking is too hard, it's about as complex as parking a car (practice makes perfect, once you develop your spacial awareness and get a feel for your ship, you'll be boosting into port without trouble.)
and definitely don't waste your money on a docking computer, just learn to fly your ship properly. (would you ask someone else to park your car at the mall?)

Combat is intense and rewarding, with millions of different weapon configurations for the available ships even the beginner ship has a chance against some of the bigger "end game" ships, so it pays to not get complacent when you start getting bigger ships because at the end of the day, the better pilot will ALWAYS win.

Exploration is a lot of fun as a primary profession or as a way to supplement fuel costs on long trips.

Despite criticism, Mining is actually reasonably lucrative for a patient player, as there are no real overheads (just get a cheap mining laser and go!) but it does take a lot of patience to chip away enough asteroids to make some real money. It's an interesting diversion however and I'm interested to see how it develops.

Trading is probably the easiest way to both make and lose a lot of money in Elite, and once you start to get serious in trading you'll find that your cargo can be often worth more than your ship! which can make for some very TENSE situations, even docking a Lakon Type 9 can become a big deal at a crowded station as all it takes is one cowboy to clip you on his way out of star-port to ruin your day/week/month.

At this point in time Elite is an incredible, vast, living, breathing universe waiting to be explored and conquered and I'm truly excited to see where it goes next.

If you're at all interested in space sims you NEED to give it a try.

There's more fleshing out to come around the sandbox that is in so far, but the basic elements are good, the interactions interesting, and the space flight/fight gameplay is amazing. Also, probably the best sound design in a video game, ever.

If you can be happy as described, grab it and you'll love it. If you want a little more second/third tier sandbox content, maybe wait a couple of months. Just don't get it expecting a typical "go here; do X" MMO because Elite doesn't provide that experience and doesn't want to.

Admittedly Egosoft threw the crown away with X3 and XR, abandoning core features that made it a great space sim. But does Elite Dangerous deserve a crown, even one that is laying in the mud because nobody wants it....

The biggest issue here is the fact they decided to make a single player game in to a multiplayer game, so multiplayer feels like single player should feel and solo play is just you in multiplayer without players. Truth is, without Multiplayer Elite Dangerous is so boring it will put you to sleep.

It is a great space sim, definitely made for the PC and PC hardware, from a space flight perspective its great the best. But these games moved on decades ago, they became much deeper than any Elite game has ever managed to be.... Elite Dangerous is like a Pacman shoot em up in the age of Call of Duty. Players simply expect more in a universe then to watch the stars flash past for 10 minutes at a time as you fly towards a station you will be leaving within seconds of arriving over and over and over again.

Good game, poorly designed, nice flight mechanics, but this is not the 1990s anymore....

So if you are driven by a story in your game playing don't buy this!
But once you understand that you can do what you like, and start to explore the missions and option for your ship, working our routes to different system, get comfortable with your ship and systems, chasing down wanted ships, bumping into funeral and wedding, convoys, pick up rare artifacts, or just some floating cargo, get interdicted for no reason and have to battle you way free. Go to extraction site and tangle with pirates while not getting caught by the security force while you steal the illegal goods, try out different weapon combos, find black markets, do some normal trading, worry if you have enough fuel for the next jump, get fined for carrying illegal cargo you have plenty to do. Once you let go and think of being a pilot in a spaceship in a universe (and the graphics help amazingly - the views are stunning) and are comfortable with the controls ( this take a few hours of play) you are set on a great adventure.
To the guys who love this game unconditionally, I'd say that it is already very good, but I do miss easier interaction with other players. The jumping in and out of supercruise to land at station really spoils the immersion and really needs improving. So for me its 8/10 also I suggest that any new pilot spends some time in the forums to pick up some tips.

The starting space station has no market! WTF Why not? So I have to go somewhere else to begin trading, well how about telling me that. They've slowed the supercruise speed down, so you now spend about 10 minutes starring at nothing happening. I was so bored, I did the laundry and came back! Then, I finally got to my destination to sell the poxy 4 food cartridges to make a measly 60 credit profit, I navigated to the landing pad and the ship wouldn't dock despite being perfectly lined up and landing gear down.

I retried 3 times to dock, then just repeatedly rammed the landing pad (still perfectly on target). Then quit and uninstalled this rubbish! Save your money. Oh and I'd already given up on the multiplayer by beta 2. So don't expect to play with friends either.

The problem is that you have all these horrifically shallow and borderline insulting your intelligence (requiring no thought, planning, offering no challenge etc) activities that make you credits. But there's nothing to spend them on except a bigger cargo hold to make more credits.

That sort of monotonous grind is bloody terrible and we've all had more than enough of grind MMOS. Let alone faux ones! There's nothing to build. Nothing to own or conquer. Nothing to create and - critically - nobody to share the journey with. It's like being trapped in an entry level job on a zero hour contract. Few people can enjoy that sensation of enforced compartmentalisation and poverty of imagination in terms of game design.

I find this particularly sad as one of the things Braben said was that he never wanted to play Spreadsheets In Space; which presumably was a jibe at EVE Online. And yet EVE offers seat of the pants adrenalin pumping PvP backed by real consequence, compelling socio-economic warfare that scales really well, politics, emergence etc.

It isn't everyone's cup of tea and is dated, clunky and bordering on impenetrable to new players, but, to literally not try to bring any of those kernels of tried-and-tested over a decade compelling gameplay features in to a 'space sandbox' seems daft to me! For all their bluster and vision: a bunch of soulless statistics is all you amount to in this game. In terms of modern gaming it's an evolutionary dead end (p2p aka lobby multiplayer is dead as a dodo) that doesn't offer a satisfying, rewarding or structured experience. It will likely never be able to circumvent that gaping flaw in design sadly, because its an anachronistic rehash of a very old format, that is baffling by design and fundamentally anti-social; lacking in emergent gameplay, patently shallow and repetitive and therefore .. dull. No matter how much content they add, it will always be crippled by this and the rather awful multiplayer implementation.

I have trouble understanding how nobody could have pointed this out at the brainstorming phase? It feels to me like they wanted to make a single player game with some multiplayer elements but ended up trying to make an always on MMO without any of the requisite MMO components. A truly unfortunate decision. The name of the game doesn't really serve to suggest anything but the digital equivalent of an ironic-beard either! Elite: Dangerous. Odd choice since the game as it stands contains literally no peril, risk, consequences or challenge and has the software equivalent of a hardwired gastric band.

If they had just made a single player game in the style of the older releases, packed with things to do, places to see, an Elder Scrolls in Space if you will, I'd have bought it and not been too concerned about the multiplayer aspect being weak. But trying to make a multiplayer game without any actual credible multiplayer, including the social or competitive building blocks required to make any multiplayer sandbox game 'work', was just dumb bordering on insane. It also perhaps explains, in my mind, why Braben has never done a sequel to the Elite series before now - arguably nobody would back him/it without a clearer commercial vision. I seem to remember a quote from Ian Bell along those lines: Braben arguably does not understand 'fun' and how to package/juxtapose that with a commercially viable but artistically integral product.

Moral? If you are going to make an MMO make a proper client/server MMO. If you are going to make a single player game, make a single player game. If you want to add on some limited multiplayer functionality then do so. Don't try to make an MMO with limited multiplayer functionality and no content. It won't end well.

My advice to anyone is to hold off right now. Wait a year and maybe pick it up when it is finished. And even then be prepared to be disappointed with the heavily instanced region locked p2p multiplayer and the inevitable lack of compelling content. I'd also caution people not to invest or buy in to anything Frontier have offered as game design proposals or pledges as they have already back pedaled on much of what was originally proposed and seem to be distracted by external commercial and financial pressures.

Overall I think this is a massive disappointment and very weak offering that fails to offer the basic ingredients most players of sandbox games expect: challenge, development, aspiration, mutability, depth and decent multiplayer. Frontier just seem to have been way too naive in their presumption that a tiny dev team who have never done this kind of game before and a tiny budget could produce the kind of AAA game they thought they could. Sadly Elite Dangerous falls way, way short ..

As an alpha tester, this isn't a game you master overnight, so be prepared for a learning curve and for it not to function like a typical mmo but something altogether more sophisticated and you are one of many in for a great ride. The best is back and only due to get better.

This game is about humanity in the stars. Covering around 100,000 populated star systems of our galaxy of 400 billion star systems. Whilst none are at war, there are constant skirmishes and internal struggles going on, and no one knows what will end up happening because the outcome is decided by us.

This game is quite literally what you make of it. It will not hold your hand, the mechanics take a bit of thought, it is not made for a modern day gamer. It is based on the original elite, so if you never played that be prepared for some things that will strike you as odd to begin with.

You can do what ever you want in this game, but be warned, there will be consequences. One of the factions might start hating you, effectively cutting off that section of space to you. Players might notice you have a high bounty on your head and coming for you, alternatively you can try to find such players.

It's the fact that this game is so open ended that it is going to cause some critic amongst players who are used to having everything pointed out to them. It is also in a constant state of flux, events in systems come and go, trade routes come and go.

When I look at most modern day releases I look at the features they have and realise, elite has just the same amount as those, but with a lot more going under the hood that is hidden. People will claim the features in this game are basic. Some of the newest features are, but all of them are solid. Yes there are a few bugs here and there, but they have been patched out on an almost daily bases. We are not talking problems like Unity or AW here, or even the static content of destiny . Expect the current features to be improved and iterated upon now that the foundations are set.

Current feature set as of writing:
    Ship to ship combat
    Trading
    Mining
    Exploration
Dynamic galaxy based on player influence
    Owning multiple ships
upgrading ships to suit your purpose
Solo mode (no player interaction with other players)
Open play (full on pvp possible)

    expected features to come:
Iteration on all of the above.
Flight Wings - grouping up with friends for specific group missions and such.
Thargoids - an alien race that little is known about, other than the fact they live in witchspace(hyperspace).
    Seamless Plantery Landings.
First Person - walking around your ship, stations, planets.
    Executive control of capital ships.
Big Game Hunting (so we have something extra to do on those planets).

The game is in a good spot right now, if you have some patience to learn the mechanics, and find the open ended aspect intriguing this is a game for you. If you don't, or you want your hand held, just avoid it, it is no arcade shooter.

The combat, the graphics, the sounds, the ship design, the whole galaxy. It is incredible.

There are still lots of features and ships that needs to be added that will come with time, but so far I'm having a great time with what it offers.

Note that this is a buy to play MMO, like Guild Wars, and while you can play solo, it requires constant connection with the server, so this game is not one that will accompany you in your travels. Servers seem very stable, but you may find inconveniences and downtimes for maintenance/update processes. So take that into consideration before buying.

If you wonder why there are so many negative reviews. That would be mainly because of the tribal fanbois of Star Citizen trolling. I also think Star Citizen is going to be great, but that is no reason not to like Elite: Dangerous, as a fan of space sims, I'll welcome as many high quality space sims as possible, and Star Citizen is still 2 years away from getting a persistent universe.

What a weird, frustratingly designed game.

The decision to pivot to always online clearly hurt it - it has less players than BF4 in an instance. Practically no features for teaming up with your mates. Only one single server location worldwide. Peer to peer networking. So, basically, an "MMO" without the massive multiplayer, but forced to be online, presumably as half assed DRM.

Only one single server location worldwide. Peer to peer networking. So, basically, an "MMO" without the massive multiplayer, but forced to be online, presumably as half assed DRM.

There's so little to do and so little content - so few different stations and ships, only a few different weapons (and even less if you exclude simple reskins). There seem to be about a total of ~30 something models in the whole game, including asteroids, all the space stations, and all the ships. There's a good variety of suns and planets, to be sure, but they're basically differently textured spheres.

As it stands the game sits very awkwardly between something like Eve, and something like Freelancer, and is unlikely to please fans of either. The grind for cash is as basic as any MMO but with none of the game systems that make a good MMO - especially in terms of teaming up - but even basic things like being able to work out arbitrage between systems, navigation, communicating with other players, etc, are practically nonexistent. And in terms of single player space game fans, there's nothing much for them either - the grand space war they promised consists of "conflict zones" consisting of mindless AI battles in space, to the achievement of nothing, no NPCs that aren't simple disposable space ships (which might as well be named 01001110), and no missions of any consequence for yourself beyond reputation and cash.

Essentially there's nothing to recommend about it - other than the sound design, which as others have said, is genuinely fantastic. Other than as a workout for headphones - this is a really expensive game, which in many ways is much much less complex and involved than games like Freelancer, Freespace and Eve, which cost practically nothing. It's about the level of 8-bit Elite, which is below the level even of most f2p mobile phone games these days.

It's hard to see this as much other than a big flubbed opportunity and a mad dash into chasing MMO cash, but without the budget for anything MMO fans have come to expect.

This is not the kind of game you can review on launch, and it was never meant to be. The development model has called for extensive player alpha and beta participation, and despite this being release version 1.0, that has not changed. Ultimately the funding model is progressive, like Star Citizen it is to be released in stages, and this includes post-official 'launch'.

What has changed post-release is the fact that we now have an extremely solid foundation for a PC Space Sim on a scale that is unprecedented. Visual and sound design are top notch. The simulation model is the best I've seen in the genre. From the various in-game systems one can see this was built to be expanded upon.

    Subsequent expansions will add;

-Exploring ships and stations in 1st person, alongside associated interactions.
-Planetary landings and exploration on full scale worlds, with proper atmospheric modelling.
    -Much more.

If you want an idea of what Elite aims to be, give SpaceEngine a try. It is free. Now imagine a game built within that, and polished to a standard one would expect from a Space Sim.

    Enjoy.

I've stolen illegal weapons from smugglers, had a stint as a rum runner in a dry system, preyed on Gold traders as they passed through anarchic areas, and traded more tonnes of fish than you can shake a thargoid at.

Negatives: improved co-op tools needed, along with strengthened AI and greater variety of ships.

It has the potential to become the "Killer App" for Oculus Rift when the Rift goes mainstream.

Just don't expect a top tier AAA title with story line with a vast multi-player experience, since the on-line social interaction is hopelessly weak to say the least. This is modern take on Elite:1984, ground breaking at the time, but hopelessly weak compared to its modern contemporaries.

I know quite a few individuals who have picked this title up, well aware of what they were getting into. They have all expressed the notion that the experience will greatly improve as the game develops.
Difficult to justify the $50 cost at this stage for what you are getting. I see that $50 as an investment for something better in the future.

Frontier Developments now have the responsibility to deliver an experience ultimately better than its modern contemporaries. The only problem could be forthcoming space combat/trading titles due for release in the 2015/16, they may steal the thunder.

At least coming in at the ground floor at this stage, if the game does eventually take off, individuals should have a head start with equipment, cash and experience.

I have no issues with the online cloud server interaction, if it protects the investment Frontier Developments have made in Elite Dangerous.

I'm giving it 7 out of 10, since it has the potential to be something fantastic. From a gaming perspective. I wouldn't put it into the realms of BF4, Skyrim or GTA V at this point, since I'm not going to be running into the office tomorrow saying what an epic session I had on Elite Dangerous last night.

The Galaxy map alone is a work of art, and a profound experience just to zoom about and appreciate the scale of things. The local stars to Sol are accurate, and it is exciting to visit them. You can indeed take multiple paths to wealth and glory, side with various factions, take part in a war. The mechanics of flying, docking, combat, are all sound. The visuals and sound are fantastic. You really feel alone out there in space.

That is not to say the game still needs work. Some aspects need fine tuning and some functionalities are not there yet, such as fleshed out mmo aspects, but the devs are hard at work all the time. The game itself is not for everyone though; some will find it asks too much from the player: there really is no hand holding here, but that is part of the fun for others. There are many quiet moments that the more thoughtful gamer will appreciate, such as flying close to a star to scoop fuel, seeing a sunrise from behind a planet. The immersive atmosphere is amazing.

Some peple are not happy with the devs decisions, most notably the offline game issue. I would suggest most of the 0 rated reviews stem from this. But those people need to get a grip. This is a place for reviewing the game itself, not the developer. The game is great already and will only get better. This game is kickstarted by its original creator, and is a work of passion. They clearly care about what they are doing.

Having experienced the game's development from Kickstarter onwards, having insight into the development process via the Design Decision Forum and access to all builds from premium Alpha, it's fair to say that the release was premature. Features had to be dropped (postponed), the last month of development took on an almost panicked air, with as many elements being broken as were fixed.

Fortunately the release candidate worked fairly well out of the "box", I haven't experienced any game breaking issues and am still enjoying the experience - which is not a bad thing at all as having "played" for a year prior, I'd be likely to feel entitled to a more jaded outlook - but I don't.

Give it 6 months, and we may see the kind of game that it's potential implies, as it is, the release is worth a solid 7/10.

"No problem" I thought, "I'm sure someone will mod in a sane flight model when it's released, after all they promised offline and modding support".

Then on the 14th of November, little more than a month before release and totally out the blue Frontier Developments announce the dropping of offline mode and with it most modding.

They still have to come up with a satisfactory explanation, and when you consider that the game was going to miss it's Kickstarter goal until they promised offline mode and modding support, "It doesn't fit our creative vision" doesn't cut it as an explanation for dropping offline.

I didn't test the social features of the online side of game, as I wasn't interested in the multiplayer, but from what I've read they are very limited

And before you accuse me of reviewing an incomplete game, apart from the complete universe in Gamma and release, there isn't much difference between Beta and Gamma, just a lot of new bugs.

Also the "customer service" from Frontier Developments is some of the worst I've encountered. I submitted a refund request on the 17th of November, was offered a partial refund on 03 December and today, the 18th of December 2014 have still to receive the promised refund

Well i am here to tell you, that is only true if your way happens to coincide with the way the developers play. There is a glaring sense of selfishness in the development of the game that has turned out for the worse upon release. It is, as others have said, a shell of a game. There are some great flight mechanics and wonderful graphics holding up a flimsy grind fest that lacks any depth or character or content or multiplayer or anything that would make it an actual game. Elite: "Dangerous" is basically a space flight simulator minus the simulation.

Just to give you some history, i backed the game when it was in closed beta and have played for a few hundred hours and have done everything the "game" has to offer. So i want to try to give you a quick run down of the features they are ADVERTISING without all the marketing fluff to hide what you will really be getting.

"Play Your Way"- unless you want to be a solo trader, this is the biggest lie you will find in the descriptions of the game on their website. you will not play your way unless your way is- playing alone mostly and almost never seeing another real player while trading and trading and trading and trading again to have any hope of having enough money to "Play Your Way"

Combat- first the website will make it sound like there is great PvP bounty hunting to be had in tandem with difficult PvE. I can tell you that there mostly certainly is not any of that. What you will get is news updates at stations for bounties on players you will never see. you will probably see Jesus Christ in this game before you take down a player bounty. The AI in the game is terrible and so easy to kill or escape from that they serve as nothing more than a waste of time. However if you do happen to take some damage or lose an engagement in anything but a stock starter ship, the cost is so astronomical that your immersion will be broken the moment your read the total. When you combine this with the extremely poor pay outs for combat, what you get is a fundamentally flawed risk vs reward system in terms of combat roles.

Exploration- exploration consists of pointing your ship at astral bodies that are "undiscovered" then trying to get to a system as far away from your discovery as possible to sell it. basically it is information trading for sightseers with a small profit margin than standard trading. i will take this time to say that, if your goal is to explore a 1:1 representation of the milky way and nothing more- this game is perfect for you.

Trading-"your every trade contributes to the dynamic market activity". the trading system is a static, one-note system that equates to little more than "easy win mode". of course there is nothing to WIN in ED, but what you can do is make money and trading is the easiest way (and i mean painfully easy) to do that. there is no economic simulation in place and you will never have a noticeable effect on any market. the worst of it all is that they do not tell you that there were exploits during the "gamma" phase of the game and they did not wipe any players prior to the 1.0 release. so you will be playing with players in 50 million+ credit ships who are multi billionaires. I am not sure how much the last part matters because, again, you will NEVER see them anyway.

Factions- the faction rep system is broken as far as i know but even when it is working it does not provide any tapestry or color to your world in ED. all factions are just letters on a screen in a station telling you to do more boring stuff for hours so you can gain rep (broken) and do slightly less boring stuff for slightly more money. when i got this game i said "finally, i can be like boba fett and do merc work for the empire", then on Dec 16th i started the game in a turd of a ship deep in Federation space 200 light years away from the empire's capital. it took me 3 hours to fly to the outskirts of imperial space. this is not playing MY way.

Now, i know what you are thinking- "this has a pretty decent meta score and i totally LOVE space sims". Well, i love space sims and rely heavily on feedback from the pc gaming community when making purchases. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE SEMI POSITIVE REVIEWS HERE. The Elite community is filled with the most blind and relentless fan boys one will ever encounter. If you would like to put what i am saying to the test then simply register for a forum account and attempt to post some useful criticism of the game. Before you know it you will be trampled by the horses of a thousand ED white knights and the keyboard punches of mighty neck bearded fan boys. You can attribute the reviews here to a small portion of those gray bushed and naive super fans. The reality is the game is 1 year away from being complete at best and even then i have little faith in the creator and lead dev and their ability to make this game work for a contemporary community.

You can focus on the journey, not the destination – even when some "road work" signs will bother you for the time being in the reincarnated Elite. But their numbers are declining with every new update so a thirty-year-old vision becomes more and more complete.
