I never played the original elite. I was old enough to though. I do have a DK2, so my review will be based of using that. This game is the absolute pinacle of my gaming experience. By far the game that whilst not playing, I have thought about the most.

Using the DK2, I feel like I am a a starship pilot, I am fully emersed the 3d and graphics are gorgeous. The reason I scored it a 9

The reason I scored it a 9 is that there is of course room for improvement and this is an evolving game. Frontier still have a long way to go in terms of making the game a complete package.

Right now, the penalty for dieing to pvp combat is far too expensive (1 death costs me around 2 hours to recoup the cost) and as has been mentioned, finding other players can be a little tedious...but thats because there are 400 billion systems in the galaxy and not that many players.

I want to see a little bit more of the story unfold also. things are moving a little slow and large scale combat is hard to get into.

The game is well designed and "moreish" in it's current state and certainly worth its full price title. Space sim games of this opennes and quality range were sorely missed from the market.

The only negative scores I see are from people who just miss a feature they just prefer. However, if a new player gets into the game based on the scores here (players or critics), it will totally work. The game is amazing.

There is a system with crime lord threatening the inhabitants, a naval base for the Federation, a system producing rare goods, which get more expensive the further out you deliver them. Bouncing around populated space, from one star system to another, from federated space to that of the empire, or the alliance, filling the fuel tank directly from stars, doing random missions here and there, increasing reputation, bounty hunting and mining are all truly a magnificent experience, by the way of the graphics and the sound specifically.

Slowly upgrading the ship from lowly sidewinder to majestic imperial clipper was my path as a pilot, since release, took me a month, and i never regretted a single minute of it. My build was incredibly stable, "unexpected error" situations happened only twice during that month. Unbelievable for a game that just released, if you ask me, considering i logged about a hundred hours.

The combat is a compromise between Newton's physics and "fighter jets in space", it's solid and will definitely have longevity. As much as NFS 5: Porsche 2000 got it right about it's driving experience, the Elite got it right about space fighting. The choice of weaponry and outfitting modules is interesting and requires, at times, hours of contemplation: how to strike a good balance between weight, defence, offence and whatever your opponent might have? That is the question. An interesting and engaging one.

The only downside i will note in this section: lack of choice for fighter space ships. Basically, there is Viper and Cobra at entry level, below one million credits. The next great ship is the imperial clipper, which costs 50 mil in fighter configuration and the one after that, the Python, is beyond a hundred. That is weeks and weeks of grinding. I grinding one may never want to choose, and, hence, one never gets a Python, as bounty hunter’s/explorer’s/miner’s life pays 1/100th of what the trading does, and trading isn’t for everyone.

After the initial month of shock, awe and pure enjoyment, many players, including myself, attempted to get down to the screws and bolts of the underlying influence system, which is supposed to drive the economy and political system, only to find out there is no elephant in that dark room. The NPCs, roaming around in great numbers are not tied to the background simulation system. That miner? He isn’t really mining. That bounty hunter? He isn’t cashing in his bounties. That trader? He isn’t really trading. The actual work is done by the background simulation system with NPC’s pretending it’s them, who are doing it. Disappointing. Why is it disappointing? Because the player or the group of them can hardly influence the galaxy around them in a direct and logical way - by interaction with NPCs and other players. Example: one can completely blockade the station, cutting off potential supply chains, but supply won’t stop. In short, the meta-game is bogus.

Every star system in Elite has factions. Every faction gains or loses political influence inside the system, depending on whether the trade happens with them, missions are accomplished in their favour and due to other minor interferences. Every faction has potential to become a ruler in the system and even to expand beyond, to other systems, depending on player/NPC interactions. Factions are driven into “states”: civil war, expansion, etcetera. The result of states is either seizure of power within a system or actual expansion. But how are they driven into these states? No one knows that. Two large groups of players are still, to this day, trying to figure out the way the system is supposed to work, but to no success. The consensus is: it’s either broken or incredibly difficult to figure out, as Frontier is unwilling to share the intricacies (or bugs) of the whole “influence” design. Some are even convinced the whole thing is not worth the effort of figuring it out as the players’ efforts are too detached from the works of the system.

Elite Dangerous is the old school space arcade, where the player is expected to use his or her imagination heavily to engage in galactic struggle. With beautiful and engaging gameplay at the surface, the inner works are flawed, limited and, perhaps, are a result of Frontier’s wrong choice in vision and direction. The game experience is worth well beyond 50$ it’s priced at, but, at this stage, the potential of it joining the ranks of greatest space sims of all time is yet to be seen, and may be years away in development.

    6/10, yet definitely a buy.

I normally would give this game at least a 8, because although most of the features you would expect are there, the mission system is just a starting point, it's still great fun to play and dogfights in PvP are just amazing. But because of all the stupid 0, it gets a 10.

Not to mention the distinct lack of a Thargoid invasion, or anything else going on in the Galaxy apart from a dying emperor and a bit of Federation politics, none of it seams to impact your game play. Not only that you can join both sides at once, which I think is a bit silly for a mmorp. You can't even easily make a tidy profit running good old fashioned narcotics, it's performance enhancers instead now. There is a smuggling mechanic which is fun but ultimately not as profitable as just hauling loads of stuff in a big fat slow ship. Gone to is being able to capture the escape pod of your victims and sell them as slaves. Not only that as of the last release I did not notice my actions having any impact on commodity prices, so the most lucrative thing to do was run back and forth to the same 2 space stations, which was a bit dull. My ship felt like Marvin the Robot, game the size of entire Galaxy and all you make me do is go back and forward between the same 2 car parks.

The game is brutal to the uninitiated, space stations will wipe you out in a heart beat if you don't follow protocol, no fines just near instant death, which is a bit ott. Also don't clip a cop by accident in mad dog fight there's no mercy there either.

Still, it keeps me up at night.

Ultimately, it's completely boring. There is no rich story - it's just delusional roleplaying.

Been some time now since the release, I had time to take a proper look, and I feel that this 'game' is biggest dissapointment I had in space-sim genere (though I did not try X-Rebirth after I've read the reviews) ever.

Anyone looking for modern space sim should look elsewhere, this game has less content than Elite II: Frontier had (released 1993) and only a bit more than Elite from 1984 had.

Absurdly boring, repetitive and buggy gameplay - buy, fly, sell x 100 so you can buy bigger ship, repeat x500 so you can buy bigger ship, repeat... Or fly around and 'explore' - point your nose towards a planet, wait 30s, scan complete, repeat. Or shoot NPCs, slightly more entertaining, but still X3 was way better, or some free space shooters (proper MMO ones) are available, too. I have not tried minning, as on paper it looks even more boring.

Expect that one way or another the game will break for you, and if you are lucky you might get response from support in a few days. If you are not, it may take weeks or months (seriously, check the forums).

Fanboys crying how good this game is are mentally impaired, as for them simple things like external camera are 'breaking immersion', and autopilot (present in Elite 2 and 3 as far as I recall, and in every other space game) will 'kill the game'. They keep saying that the supercruise minigame is fun and entertaining - so actually sitting there correcting throttle and direction every few seconds and pressing 'j' once arrived close to destination is their idea of everlasting fun (and you might need to sit there for a good 10 minutes on one way journey). And don't anybody dare to say 'can we get autopilot' - this is ELITE!
Seriously, people that cry how good the game is, how great FD is, how fantastic is the fact that trading commodities prices have to be tracked with pen and paper (or external app that need to OCR the screen shots) have something not right with their heads. But, to be just, society needs workers that can do repetitive tasks all day long and be happy with it, too. Maybe it's a game for such.

Frontier Developments made a run for money here, and most of the fanboys are unfortunately blind enough that they don't see it. The ones that saw it are fighting for refunds right now.

4 points for graphics and sounds as they are not too bad (on par with X3), 1 total for everything else being so damn broken/non existant/scam.

Ah, and don't get fooled by adverts that this is MMO game - it is not. There is only a basic chat (VERY basic one) and a chance you might see somebody in space. No way to fly together etc - 'coming' in future patches, and FD already offered that players can pay to access beta and test it...

Also, if you think of other space games and imagine all those fancy shiny weapons, shields and other systems that you will be able to put on a myriad of ships - again, get X3:AP. Elite a few modules, coming in exciting variants like A to E, and sizes like 1 to 7. They differ in how much they cost, weight and power consumption. And there is about 15 ships if I recall right, from free one to multi milion credits costing ones, just 1 of the type (trader/multi purpose/fighter) in 'tier', increasing in price. And the only way to gather sensible amount of credits is to grind them through trading. No missions that could give you fancy ship in reward etc, this is 'Sandbox', and most of all, this is Elite!

Can this game become something sensible? In theory, yes - but that would require FD company to grow up and start behaving like responsible developer of a big title, and change in fanboys base (most of them really want 1984's Elite with better graphics, any suggestions to make this a modern title are being considered a heresy). Time will tell if this title will survive the test of time, if one would like to bet - I'm not going to put my money on it...

It's truly beautiful, and I can't believe they put that much work into building our galaxy, but I can't see it. I'm an adult now, I work, so I can play maybe 2-3 hours a week. As such, I just can't grind away flying back and forth trying to upgrade this little POS Sidewinder. How do I have a universe of possibility with a ship that can't haul, can't fight, can't jump? At least the original Elite gave you a Cobra which could do all of that relatively well from the start. This is just eye-gouging grinding because it's so flat. The stations, planets, and ships look phenomenal but one you land, you can't even get out of the seat. All trade is through a clunky hologram interface and it's not even hyperlinked well enough to click this and it takes you to nav page that style. No journal, so I have to write things down on paper, like where to find black markets or certain items, and the fetch quests are so bland... just text find this or take that, but without a journal I can't even cross reference where the last place I saw X commodity was (ulness I wrote it down physically). And trans-galactic flight planning? I can't type a location and say "plot route" unless it's within my fuel distance because they can't add "refuel here" waypoints, yet my simple $70 flight planning software I use for flying real planes can do it just fine. I have a hyper-space capable ship, but the computer can't add refuel waypoints? WTF? And how is it that we can jump ships FTL, but can't get market updates or at least general "this system trades these things" data without going there and seeing it after we land? Too much realism in one area, not enough in the other. I want to talk to an NPC!!! Expand

I actually feel sorry for those that have spent hundreds on pre-release backing the game only to be let down come release on a scale that is astronomical.

If you are considering buying this I STRONGLY suggest you don't for at least another year. Remember right now you are only buying a premium BETA, the game is so far from being finished it is more likely to never actually get finished as it runs out of funding. We will know this when the game is on a silly low offer of £15-£20 to try and bring more funding in, sign the game is doomed.

Sandbox OK, yet this game has no sense of direction at all right now just a grind of Bulletin Board contracts. A lot of the contracts are still widely buggy and you are unable to complete them. You will soon become frustrated with looking for unidentified sources only to warp in and out of them looking for the needed parts of your contracts. The only ones I have found to be flawless so far are Cargo Contracts, so if you just want to be hauling items from place to place then this is the game for you. BORING!!

Looks nice not really, even the loading screen looks like it is 8bit. Don't believe me? Google search Elite Dangerous Loading Screen and look at the images, you will soon see what I mean. Yet in the game Stations are different and do look very nice. Once you have Docked and Launched you have seen it all, repeated sequence/scene over and over. If you like to just see big suns and little white dots then go for it because that is all this is right now. Don't go off the screenshots those are the few nice things you see for about 30 seconds in total of 2 hours game play.

Sounds are great though and I am a fan of the in game comms, they have filtered it to make you sound like you are in space though this IMO does need tweaking as even in the main menu there is far to much interference so just reverted back to my usual comm method.

Controls are nice and seem to be about the only thing right now that is good in the game, you need to use the whole keyboard but there is no need to panic it is a slow paced game leaving you plenty of opportunity to set yourself right. After a few hours play you will find you have worn the 'J' key out since you are constantly warping from place to place just to see the same thing over and over.

MMO, 9 hours of play and can't recall seeing another player. Instead of focusing on such a huge world more focus was needed on the actual playing experience of this game a smaller Universe could have been expanded at a later date, where as now it is just a Universe of NOTHING. Lets be realistic here though 400 Billion Star Galaxy with a player population of maybe a few 10's of thousands, your going to find it hard to find anyone unless your playing with friends in which even then NPCs is about all you will see.

You will find all your goals are is to grind for credits chasing the next Big ship you can afford and the price gaps are HUGE.

The game has such potential but I can't ever seeing this being released. Maybe come 2020 in release v8.0095. Which will be to late as Star Citizen will have released and this will be forgotten since they have another 12 months till release and have the time to analysis this game and make sure there's is right. Though the Russians millionaires seem to have that sealed up already a little like EVE due to it's over excessive ship prices.

So for now it is back to EVE which I am not a Elite player of maybe only 100 hours of actual game play in BUT at least you have a direction to head in. For the price of this its almost 6 months of EVE. I suggest going to play that for 6 months and come back and see what's happened to this then.

If we are all honest all we really wanted was a first person version of EVE, the baseline was already made. So ask yourselves this, How did they get it so WRONG???

This game is for you if:
    - you are a kid or teenager and don't care about school and just can waste endless hours for nothing.
    - you are unemployed and/or divorced and can waste endless hours on nothing.
    - you are old and retired and don't have anything to live for anymore.

What can you do in Elite Dangerous?
First of all, there are 400 billion star systems that can all be explored. As a new player, you are tempted to just blaze off and see everything. Bad idea. First of all: you're always limited by your choice of ship modules, i.e. to get far, you need to buy better equipment, your starter ship won't get you very far. Interestingly enough, the best modules in ED almost always cost more than the ship itself. So before you can start to explore this vast world, you need some things: better FSD (jump drive), Fuel scoop (to refuel on the way), better Scanners (Advanced and Surface, they're north of 500k CR). So to get started, a few million credits will help you.

How do you get the credits? You can either trade, but to effectively trade, you need more cargo space. Most of the time you can make about a 1000 cr per ton (cargo space unit). So with the starter ship, you can make about 4000 cr per run, IF you find a trade route that gives you that much. Most of them just give between 300-900 cr/ton. So you can grind your way up slowly, until you get into the millions.

Bounty hunting: effectively the same grinding, less profit, more fun. Hunt NPCs at Nav Beacons or Resource extraction sites, be careful not to fire on npc police (they tend to fly through your line of fire, like any excellently programmed AI does of course ;). But for better equipment and thus better bounty, you should do some trading before.

Missions: Good for beginners, but the rewards stay low, no matter how much you progress and the missions are just iterations of the same things all over again. Boring but a good income for beginners for the first few hours in game. After that, missions are completely obsolete except for the occasional system permit offer or progressing in the ranks of your chosen faction.

Mining: as others already stated: About as funny and lucrative as watching paint dry.

USS: unidentified signal sources. These pop up occasionally when flying through systems in FSD. There you can find either npc traders, npc pirates, mission targets or floating cargo, which you can scoop and sell. But beware: all the cargo you find is always marked stolen, so you have to find a station with a black market, and you have to smuggle it in (fly in silent mode) to avoid detection when scanned. If scanned, the fine you get almost always outweighs the profit.

That's about it. Multiplayer? forget it. Tried it, took about 2 hours until my friend and I finally landed on the same server.
The waypoint plotting for exploration is nothing but a joke. In your galaxy map, you can plot a course only to the nearest systems, unless you wait a few minutes. Apparently, the game developers made a minigame or better a waiting game of the galaxy map. It's even animated: from your current location, lines are drawn to every possible reachable location around you. slowly these lines extend and after a few seconds, you can select a system that is 30 LY away as destination, after a few seconsd more you can select a system that is 40 LY away, then about 60 LY and so on. If you want to plot a course for 100 LY distance, you have to wait about a minute. Yes, that's no joke. The course plotting in Elite Dangerous is nothing short of an absolute travesty. If you want to fly across the galaxy, you have to spent several hours in the galaxy map plotting courses.
Exploration itself is nothing short of tedious than plotting courses. First, you scan an unexplored system. To find everything that is present in that system, you need to equip the best scanner possible (1,5 million cr). To make money of your scans, you need the detailed surface scanner (500k cr). Afer the first scan, every orbital body in the system is reveiled, then you have to fly manually to each orbital body. Depending on it's size you have to fly as close as 15 LS before the scan starts, and it takes somewhere between 10-30 seconds for your scan to finish. The rewards are between 400 and 85000 per system (my frame of reference, best system I found was one with 2 habitable water worlds), depending on how thoroughly your system exploration is and what you find (rare star types, rare planet types). The furthest I explored was about 1200 light years, about 12 hours of gameplay, netted about 1,8 million credits.
It can be rewarding if you discover nice planets and stars, but after a few hours, it becomes repetitive, and the graphics are not that good that they compensate for the endless repetitio

I'm a big elite fan from the original and sequel.

This game does neither justice. There is barely more content than the original game, the customisation is less than Frontier elite. The game design is horrible, too many factors that the devs either just didn't think about or just didn't care about. This game isn't anywhere near what most people would consider 'release ready'

Combined with the extremely unprofessional aspect of the Frontier development staff, who recently sent E-mails to a good chunk of the playerbase accusing them of exploiting when the vast majority weren't, I'd mark this game on my avoid list.

Trading is shallow and repetitive and if you want to make money its the only real option.
Combat missions are basically the same thing over and over. No variation, no excitement. Combat itself is very shallow and poorly thought through. There is little to no skill involved, its pretty much who has the better ship and in PvP, who decides to pull the net-cable to escape if they need to.

Maybe in 1-2 years it might be playable. Its not at the moment.

This alone is a reason NOT to buy the game, if something fails, good look getting what you paid for.

The next reason is that the game is still an early BETA, they just changed it to "release" and act as if it was finished. The promise a few upgrades but area already heavily working on several paid extensions.
They cheat on the players. It's all about grinding the money our of us instead of delivering high quality.

The game has many bugs, none of them are handled.
The existing VR support is nice but there has not been any development toward reducing it's problems since a long time.
All their development likely was put into the paid extensions, they want to make 300 million USD within 2 years (according to their press releases).
Would be nice to read that they want to make the best game possible within 2 years, sadly not the case.

The game itself runs fairly stable but it has no content. You can not play together with other people it's a solo game with random player encounters. You are always in your own instance. (not a true MMO)

The PVP is simple, you just press the EXIT button you are out of it. You can not lose your ship as long as you log out before it's gone.

Sadly PVE content is nearly non existent. It works well for the first 2-3 hours but once you have a bigger ship it turns to endless repeated grinding against non existing AIs.
There is no mission to do except a single one which is very anoying (search a specific ship for one hour, kill it in 2 minutes).
There is no way to play together with friends, even if you could see them (they are not in your instance mate, sorry) you can not share bounties or transfer them items or money.

The only missing feature to finish the game off would be the ability to buy ships for real money.

I was advertising it in the beginning, now I can only give a big STAY AWAY.
Hope for Star Citizen, hope for one of the other games.
Frontier is treating their players too bad to give a recommendation.
If you don't care about all the problems, the game can be quite some fun even with the tiny content it provides.

Elite, although unfinished, is really "moorish" and has me long hours at the helm of my Cobra. The game has been designed as an immense space sim sandbox and will need you to make your own game out of it. Persistent universe? Yeah, kind of, except everything runs on p2p without validity checks, because the servers having problems to keep up with the data already.

Multiplayer? Yeah, kind of, p2p, works sometimes and sometimes not, player communications is giving you often connection errors and other players not in the mood for pvp interactions simply disable p2p in their router and enjoy a carefree solo experience while officially still playing on the big persistent universe.

Background simulation for the politics, faction standings, system control, etc? Only rudimentary working, but this you might only notice after weeks of playtime into the system.

The game is of this kind of issues and would be considered by most developers an alpha build, but frontier is charging full price. And they seem to ask us for additional money if we want to test the coming new features like "Wings" witch should include the ability to group with other players, something that is not included in the current version of the game. The beta for that should start in march.

I wish this game would have been build with more passion, attention to detail and with a real persistent universe in mind, but in its current state you it kind of broken. Most players will reach soon the point when a fun experience turns sour because of bugs and design decisions.

What's odd about it is my playtime. I look at it, and shake my head. I feel ashamed. I feel guilty. Here's a game that I've dreamed about since my first outing in outer-space. Here's a game that I know I should love, cherish and burn away at until I've soiled my pants and I'm knee-deep in my own waste...

    Unfortunately, that never happens.

What happens instead is, I tend to play Elite in short strides, because, to be perfectly blunt, it isn't 'ready' yet. It still feels like a 'beta' and it most certainly does not feel complete. There is no mistaking that Elite has a lot of potential, it's just a shame that most of that potential will be in the form of paid expansions and future DLC. Which mind you, I have no problem with. With promises such as planetary landings, and multi-crewed ships, I'll happily throw my money at them. But make no mistake, I'll angrily grumble away while I do it, reminding them that I didn't pay for an empty shell of a game.

And that is sadly what Elite is at the moment. An empty shell. A game that promises so much, and has delivered so little. It is immersive. It is a great game, to be fair. But a deeply flawed one at that. The game's current mechanics are sub-par and undeveloped.

Combat is exhilarating, takes skill, proper skill, and is a joy to behold. It's just a shame that combat aspect of the game that I'm least interested in. I'm sure the Elite combat jockey's are enjoying the game to its fullest, but even they get burned out from it now and again. I've a couple of friends of mine who also have Elite, and are 90% combat, 10% trading. They don't play Elite anymore.. Why is that? It's a question that gets answered with a shrug and a statement of, "Well, there's not much too it..."

There same could be said for trading. If your not doing anything related to combat, then your possibly grinding your way at the rather mundane method of making money in Elite. Regardless of how you earn your credits, be it bounty hunting missions or trading away on some profitable route, or doing sanctioned courier missions for some NPC faction, watching your faction rep tick up, one percent at a time, you and along with your combat buddies, are all in the same boat.

That is, you are all grinding away for money. Combat pilots do it for the bounties, and faction rep to boot is a nice bonus for them. Traders do it via smuggling or legit means, regardless, it's all about money. And what can you do with that money? Well, here's where Elite falters greatly.

The core process of progression in Elite is jumping from Ship A to Ship B, and from there to Ship C and D. That's basically what Elite is, in a nutshell.

Some of the mechanics are not fully fleshed out and this further emphasizes why Elite is a great but deeply flawed multiplayer game. Let's do a rundown on some of them:

Piracy - For anyone that hasn't played Freelancer Discovery, the online RP mod that has a medium sized community following it, then let me tell you that piracy in that game was fun. Essentially you would camp a space highway/tradelane and wait for your intended target. You'd then knock out the tradelane and issue your demands. That was enjoyable and when I did it, I felt like I was committing piracy. It felt... 'right'. In Elite, I do not get that feeling at all. Piracy is not only difficult, (as it should be) but it can be tedious and downright boring at times. It takes a lot of work, a lot of luck, and a lot of waiting around, for it to be reliable and profitable. And even then, why do it?

Economy: Essentially Elite's economy is only there to support players in upgrading their ships, there is literally nothing else to it. Sure prices will change based on trades being done, but really, nothing happens on the grandiose scale of things.

Factions: Players can grind, and I mean that literally, GRIND to gain faction influence for a system that overall has little value in things, barring direct intervention by the developers. This is an area that is still being worked on, and I'm still not impressed.

Exploration: My favorite aspect of the game. Or, it would have and should have been if it was even remotely interesting. It isn't. Go look up player vids of players exploration. Most of it contains oddball commentary on the stats of a planet, such as atmosphere and orbital period, while pretending to sip some cognac while pretending to be the late great Sir Patrick Moore. I want to explore ancient ruined wrecks in space. Interesting and bizarre visual anomaly's and other odd stuff... I don't want to drool over a planets stats. Speaking of planets, another point of criticism is that most of the planets look the same, and are quite dull and not as beautiful as they should be.

I can recommend Elite, but I whole heartily recommend waiting for a more complete Elite.

wich would give me " a small amount" of 2000 cr , i had to undock wich more or less was a Big pain , from a Station , i found my mission you cannot just choose to get it to point it on the map you have to remember the name of the system you have to go to then go into a Map write Down the system name , after then you can choose it so you know where to fly Ok ok fin fin we dont die of that , now 32 Mins later in so call Supercharge or hyperspace Iam still not at the mission where to deliver my cargo .. So boring it Hurts

Update : gave a bit more in score , 11 hours and still not much to do when you are on a mission you cannot just fly to the mission and do what you came for you do have to try and find out wher the mission is in a system , it will only tell you what system to look in " a system can be big " , i ende up using 30 mins just to find a Black box from a Ship , now i will try mining to get som Money and hopefull this game will be more fun later on .

I love that this game has endless potential. Yes this is a shell of a full-game, but its a perfect shell. When the modding community gets their hands on this, they've got the best foundation to support their talent. I'm optimistic.
I'm so invested in this game that I often catch myself talking to myself while playing, and even if it's something minor, I'll leap outta my chair yelling whether I'm giddy or pissed. Not having some unintellectual hand-holding HUD to play the game for you and actually having to do tasks yourself like travelling makes for a sense of accomplishment and individuality (Skyrim vs Morrowind). I can see how many gamers wouldn't have the patience to enjoy this and I don't blame them. It isn't a casual game, its a long long-term investment. Please Frontier, IMPROVE CORE GAMEPLAY BEFORE ADDING NEW. Scouring a whole star-system for a USS (unidentified signal source) is more repetative, frustrating, and boring than travelling or docking. Last thing, do Discovery Scanners need to be so expensive?

-3 points for: poor customer service, no multi-player features other than coexistance, everything related to trade, and "find" missions (including: how the f am I supposed to selectively retreive personal weapons or slaves in 2 hours?).

    Biggest setbacks were:
    - no chance to contact friends online who were ingame at that time
    - no group functions whatsoever - how do I pay guards? By dropping cargo, really? How do they aid me when pulled out of Supercruise? etc. pp. Is no MMO, is to little populated in open play to be likely to become one.
    - Gained Access to restricted Imperial Home System - and found nothing whatsoever worth restricting
    - You can't be what you whant to be ingame, it's rather a choice between minigames.

    Biggest plus:

    - may be immersive Space Sim Cockpit Simulator with Oculus Rift, as long as this expirience doesn't give way to boredom.

I played Elite on C64 and loved it, even if it wasn't much more than back'n forth, as now. But at these times the whole concept was brillinat. It seems to be a little less brilliant right now. Let's hope Star Citizen doesn't end up as bloatware (backed that too).

ED promises an open, immense, unforgiving world where the player has total freedom (and no safe nets), something we have seen already in games like EVE or DayZ and is very appealing, but it doesn't offer enough complexity to support that kind of experience.

At the moment the main two strong points of the game are the flight/fight system (the only part of the game that feels like a finished product) and the scientific appeal that visiting a real 1:1 model of the known galaxy might have for some users, provided you have a tablet to spice up the journey with wikipedia.

All other features are at embryonic state:

-mining, trading and exploring are the only gameplay mechanics available outside fighting and are so simple that they could all be explained in detail in 2 pages.
-stations and ships models are not enough for an open world, they become repetitive after few days.
-ships equipment features few weapons and even fewer utility components, most of which are organized in tiers with an obvious best choice that makes all others intermediate steps to the most expensive piece.
-the factions system (that's supposed to simulate the political struggles between NPC's factions, giving the player a chance to interact) is, again, too simple, a 15 minutes video on youtube will explain all you all there is to be known.

All this simplicity means you'll master the game mechanics in a couple of weeks (except dogfight), from there on is just a matter of how many hours you are willing to trow at the game doing the same things over and over.

As Scott Manley said: "it's a mile wide and an inch deep", if it manages to go a little deeper in the next year it'll be a great game, maybe the best space sim ever made (we'll see what SC has to offer)
At the moment i wouldn't suggest the purchase of the game except for Elite series enthusiasts and Oculus Rift owners

Yes. I am going to agree on the fact that it might be light on content now, but looking at the news and the possibilities this can be a dream coming true very soon (as it alredy is, really). You can choose from bounty hunting and having GREAT fun killing those other ships, to trading between stations and making a nice profit for each run. What people also must get is the fact that it is a simulator, it is NOT eve online, it is a simulator. If you dislike the times it take to travel to point A to B, or the FSD drive itself, or anything of that, I'd say this game is not for you, but if you like a great space sim with great features and even better potential, I'd definetely pick it up.
And for those out there that wonder, Yes, it is COMPLETELY playable with keyboard and mouse, in fact, I have amost only used that as of yet and I am in love with the controls aswell.

The game (well its not a game really more like a demo with 4 billion stars) is nothing like advertised in trailer or game info there is no multi-player and it is really generic in design which makes it so dull to play. The only real way to make money is repetitive trading as combat often resulted in loss rather that gain of funds. Also support is non existent.

I have heard there are DLC coming out to rectify some of these issues but they will cost extra ££'s which I was not prepared to wait/pay for. Thankfully I sold this game and got my money back. I shall be much more careful what I spend £40 on in the future!

An outstanding achievement, but not my cup of tea. Elite: Dangerous asks a lot of you, you need to put in a lot of time to get anywhere and the learning curve is steep. Elite gives you freedom, but it is freedom without direction and many may literally become lost in space (sorry couldn't resist) as they wonder what to do and where to go. Wow. Just wow. I got the game after launch and have been doing my share of low level missions and trades, hunting some baddies at asteroid fields and star gazing. Already plenty good. The only main rule was everyone had to go in sidewinders. Customized at will but just sidewinders. The ffa were great but the 2 v 2 and 3 v 3 were just epic. Chasing each other around the big rocks, using chaf and heat sinks while trying to help each other and shake bandits. Man. I love this game. Expand

I have been absolutely loving this game. Great graphics and sound along with good flight controls and fun combat make for a title I can see myself playing for countless hours. Takes a bit of trial and error and research to get things figured out but well worth it.

Been exploring the 1:1 galaxy since I started playing in Christmas and it is just an awesome sight to behold. Hunting black holes, neutron stars or simply approaching those nebulae just make my day. The open universe is there for the taking and will be getting back in time to "civilized" systems to try out the rest of the sandbox aspects of the game... combat, bounty hunting etc. But forBeen exploring the 1:1 galaxy since I started playing in Christmas and it is just an awesome sight to behold. There are many things left that were not at launch: wing mechanics, missing exploration mechanics and mining is just plain boring. But all in all this game is really really worth it for any space sim fan out there.

Devs have also started plotting thgeir dev work this year, not only for all those missing things but also for their major expansions. Hold on tight!

Avery solid foundation and extremely fun at it. Yes, the game is incomplete but that was not a surprise. In this day an age games like Elite will never really be finished. Truly a space sim sandbox of epic proportions. Mercenary, explorer, pirate, trader, bounty hunter, miner... solo or with friends. Truly the galaxy is ours to play with. Best immersion in a space sim.

I pre order the game based on the hype and it has not disappointed! Best launch of a game ever. Smooth, devs seem to be very responsive with issues. Best graphics in a space sim for many years. 4K, Oculus rift. Best sound. Best slick interface and UI menus. Ships can be all customized to your hearts content and PVP in conflict zones in awesome.

I have not played any other game since I joined in Beta a few months ago. The game will immerse you fully with that "1 more mission" feeling exactly in the same way games like civilization would keep oyu at the screen for all nighters.

First minute the game takes your breath away and then it entertains you for another couple of hours to end up like a meditative tool for hard working individuals. What a waste and shame for a game in such beautiful environment. [Issue#253]

Everyone who played the original game back in the 80's, should be right at home. It's the 21st Century version of "Elite." But newer, uninitiated players may find it strangely desolate and repetitive. A grand space simulation, aimed at the series' hardcore fans.

You can focus on the journey, not the destination – even when some "road work" signs will bother you for the time being in the reincarnated Elite. But their numbers are declining with every new update so a thirty-year-old vision becomes more and more complete.
