Hard to judge this game after Xenoverse 2 was released which is a flatout improvement of this game in every facet. Otherwise, the dated visuals and game strucutre doesn't negate the otherwise fun activity of creating your dream dragon ball character. Still remains to be a solid and entertaining game.

    Pros
+Main storyline consists of all major stories for Dragon Ball Z and includes Battle of the Gods story - alongside the main story for the game
+Season Pass/DLC includes GT Saga (Story and characters) and Resurrection F Characters (SSGSS Goku, SSGSS Vegeta and Golden Frieza)
+Parallel quests that increase length of playthrough and also provides replay value due to item drops being like a MMO
+Create your own character out of five possible races: Human, Saiyan, Freiza, Maijin and Namekian. Choose gender and other aspects on the character
+RPG system that lets you grow character as you like alongside customizing appearance and moves
+A MMO like Hub World that allows you to interact with NPCs, to buy items and to do certain quests
+Single Lobby which shows you player characters standing/sitting in one place with the NPCs or Multi Lobby which allows you to interact with other players

    Cons
-Due to MMO aspects and RPG aspects, the game feels like a grind at times
-AI allies at times can be useless and AI enemies can sometimes overpower you especially when you are outnumbered
-You can only do offline 1 on 1 (or other fights) via a NPC in the hub world, there is no specific menu for it
-Resetting stats requires you to collect Dragon balls which can be time consuming and requires grinding
-Animations look awkward at times and visuals look dated for a game that was released in 2015

Granted, the game at least has a separate story from most games, but you're going to end up fighting the same characters over and over. The overuse of super armor is quite annoying as well, but the biggest design flaw is the reward system. that means grinding. Now, if you're used to Monster Hunter's way of giving you a chance of getting an item as a reward you'll still be annoyed. Some quests have "Ultimate Finishes," which means completing a mission under certain conditions which you aren't told about, this can be very annoying because the missions will tell you about the rewards you could get, but without telling which require an Ultimate Finish. Definitely not worth $60, and DO NOT buy the DLC. Expand

Its main virtues are that the graphics decently emulate the latter DBZ style, and you can design your own Dragon Ball character - as muddled up with late-DBZ dogma, retconning and annoying advertising for the new installments in the franchises as it is. You can have a "Majin" (as in Majin Buu) character but not an artificial human or animal-person, as though there's some precedent for a majority of the former but not the latter. Overall a very cynical and uninspired show. Expand

The worst of it is, I wish that the environments were more destructible. This is DBZ, 45% of a fight usually involves destroying mountains, bodies of water and slamming fighters into the ground. There is some basic destruction, and I understand resources are limited, but it doesn't stop the game from being fun.

I have put in around 30 hours leveling up my female saiyan, and it's been a lot of fun. The side quests to unlock abilities are a bit grindy, but it adds incentive to keep playing. Over all, it's one of the best dbz games I have ever played and while it's a bit rough around the edges, it's worth it, as this game is routinely on sale for around 30 bucks. Online coop with friends is a lot of fun too.

Having read reviews prior to purchasing, I was skeptical as to whether or not I'd find my money well-spent. I'm a fan of the show and a fan of the previous games, in particular Tenkaichi 3. I'm giving it a solid 8/10 because I think the game is worth $40, not $50, for the content and the quality.

    PROS:
    - The story, as it progresses and weaves your character in, is quite cool, especially if you're keen on the series. There have been a couple of "whoa, WHAT!?" moments for me so far.
    - Parallel Quests are a bit of a grind, but I put this as a positive because they manage to keep them interesting. You can play them either online or offline, and in both cases you can select what character you play as from your currently unlocked roster. This was unclear to me before buying, as I thought you could only run with your created character. Being able to jump in as one of the Z-fighters from the get-go is great fun, and there's plenty of dialog between characters when they're fighting each other or on the same team (although this can get a bit repetitive).
    - Combat is generally enjoyable, though a bit lacking in depth. It's the same ol' formula from the previous games, but lacks the enjoyable beam clashes. Also, there's no traditional "counter" move, though there are some abilities that act as counters.
    - And speaking of, great selection of abilities.

    CONS:
    - Somewhat repetitive, although this is largely counteracted by the enjoyable animation, graphics and overall gold-coiny feel to the game.
    - Acquiring the Dragon Balls themselves is basically just a grind of the same PQ over and over and Retrying until you get one from the time patroller that spawns most of the time. Doesn't particularly feel exciting.
    - AI is kinda weak. I haven't noticed much difference between any of the NPCs AI-wise. I expected that. And they usually fall prey to the same tactics. I sort of expected that too. What I didn't expect was for them to implement a stage with enemies that respawn in the center of the ship, which is another room in itself with only one entrance, and to watch my allies try to fly *through* the wall to get to them (and vice versa). Indefinitely. Lookin' at you, Frieza's Ship.
    - Doubly worse about the AI is how NPCs you're supposed to protect or keep alive have no regard for their own safety.
    - Manual item collection in the world is tedious. I don't want to look for them first-person, for a start. Take it a step farther and let's just add that loot to the end without me having to pick it up. I find this part very un-fun.
    - The on-disc DLC is an obvious cash grab. No one likes that **** Stop it. I don't blame them for trying to make more money, but honestly, at $50, I already feel slightly ripped off. I *might* buy the Return of F DLC, that'll be it.
    - You will grow to hate the theme song in the town. And to make matters worse, when you're shopping, it adds another "layer" to the track to make it unique (like another set of drums). For me it just makes it more annoying. Maybe it's just me.
    - Unclear tooltips for pretty much everything, especially equipment. Wouldn't be a HUGE issue were it not for the lack of a training mode. Would still be a pretty big issue without. All we get are a number of arrows showing... something...? At least we know if it's positive or negative.

    OPINIONS:
    - People complain about Super Saiyan Ki-spam. Granted, the only offset is that their Ki is being drained and it's easy enough to charge it back up, but... y'know... just don't let them charge back up and dodge 'em. I rolled a Saiyan on my first because I wanted Super Saiyan for PvE, and granted, being able to spam supers on some parts is GREAT. It offsets some of the difficulty surprises. Overall I feel it's balanced, though, and frankly this wouldn't feel like DBZ if there weren't some walls you had to bang your head on, y'know?
    - I feel there's plenty of customization in character creation, y'all crazy. The only thing that bugged me a little bit is, and this is just an example, that for saiyan hairstyles, #2 and #12 (total shot in the dark on the numbers there but just an example), they're the same hairstyle reversed. Why could we not simply have a reversed option for each hairstyle? Why are the two so far apart on the list? Why do no other hairstyles get a reverse? This tells me they were just putting in a filler option, and not even being subtle about it.

    CLOSING STATEMENTS:
I do agree that this is a must for any DBZ fan. An enjoyable button-masher with some fun, if a bit grindy, collecting elements. For what it is, the game is enjoyable, but I don't feel it's worth the pricetag for anyone that *isn't* already a DBZ fan, and even then it's a stretch. I don't regret adding this to my library in the slightest, though.

Yes I did, I believe that is the most important question you have to ask when you're reviewing a videogame therefore I would recommend it. Now, not to everybody, so here is where you try and decide if you fit in this category or not:

    I would recommend this if:

-You like the series or have watched/played dragon ball sometime in your life.

-You are the kind of player who buys a game and plays that game for a long time till completion

-If you inted to play this online or/and have a friend that plays it I strongly recommend you to buy this, there is online so you can fight with other people as well, not the same against someone you know though.

A few notes of how I played it:
-Played it offline, never once connected to the dragon ball servers.
Side notes to you to keep account on.

Design choices favoured online play, it's not a game focused to really play singleplayer all the time.
They could of greatly done a better game (mainly the story, only involves of jumping to fight in to fight, yes it is a fighting game but I remember the dragon ball tenkaichi 2 I believe it was on PS2 which was the last dragon ball I played since this one and that had a kind of open world game with little mini games in it), you do not have an open world game in this game, you have a kind of a city divided in three parts (loading screens) with players there like an mmo kind of stile and some npc as well.

Mentor system is a complete failure, the idea is not that bad but the execution is horrible, you won't mind this if you play the game for 100+ hours though, afterall, it's more content to complete I guess.

Combat is fun and challenging for the most part, difficulty is pretty high and requires you to farm quite a lot with some secondary missions called 'parallel quests', thing is the difficulty is rather imbalanced during the main story line with some character or missions being to difficult for what/who it is at that point in time and can also be fairly easy like the last boss at the end game for example.

    I must of spent about 30 hours with this game, there is still is a fair amount of things for me to do {got the SEASON PASS btw should of noted that out from the start, 3 DLC, to be honest they don't add much to the game, just some characters to play in battles and maybe if you want some parallel quests although that comes with disadvantatges not using your character ''no rewards just XP and money ((zeni))' ) and some content in the way of more battles with no real story behind it whatsoever}

It's a fighting game, so the replayabilty is ludicrous can spend thousands of hours in the game if you wish, not content wise but surely just playing agaianst other people.
I've finished the main story being lvl 51 so to go up to 80 or 100 if you intend to buy DLC.
You can also create more characters and level the up as well.

Ok, next i'll list the cons I found with the game so if you find here something that really breaks it for you there is where I would stop recommending it to someone:

-Story is crap, has no logic behind it whatsoever, voice acting is trough the floor and you're character cannot talk for some reason which really pis*** me off when they ask him questions and he just pulls these stup** faces and gestures.

-Any sort of humor they try and pull of is pulling me out of the game step by step.

-Voice actors, oh dear... Your character does not talk for some reason, they ask him questions and he just pulls these stupid faces.

-It's an inmature game, it's obviously focused to teenagers or youngsters who are currently watching dragon ball. (I'm talking the main story line here as it's most of what I played and is the only real content it has outside of the combat)

-Camera is quite awfull, I played this with a gamepad and I had a lot of trouble trying to show the A X Y square instead of some weired numbers, also had a lot of trouble trying to run the damn game offline, it keep getting stuck on a loading screen after each fight saying loading to leaderboards when I wasn't even connected to the servers! solution was playing steam in offline mode, very very annoying.

I had fun with it and I'll be looking for the next dragon ball game, hopefully with better design choices and a more balanced game overall.

Now when it comes to actually fighting, this game really shows its true colors. I found the fighting mechanics to be repetitive, dull, and sometimes VERY frustrating. There are many times in the middle of combat where the character you’re playing as, for some reason, just can’t seem to focus on the opponent even when they were “LOCKED” on. Having to take a brief moment to stop in the middle of battle because I’m punching air while my opponent is behind me, or beside me was highly annoying. Amid the Saiyan Saga when you first encounter a great ape fight, it was fun at first until I realized how easy they were to defeat and didn't really provide a challenge. There are A LOT of times where you find yourself having to defeat 20+ “throw away” characters such as Saibamen and Frieza’s henchmen in order to move on to the next level. At that point, the game becomes tedious and feels like nothing but a chore. I recommend you maximize the multiplayer features if you want to maximize your fun.

I was pretty skeptical regarding Xenoverse, as Dragonball has had a very mixed quality of games attributed to this license. The source material is one of my favorite animes, and although I don’t really watch it any more, I still have a soft spot in my heart for it. I’ve played most of the Super Famicom fighting games that came out back in the day, and while they were fun and had a degreeI was pretty skeptical regarding Xenoverse, as Dragonball has had a very mixed quality of games attributed to this license. The source material is one of my favorite animes, and although I don’t really watch it any more, I still have a soft spot in my heart for it. I’ve played most of the Super Famicom fighting games that came out back in the day, and while they were fun and had a degree of depth, it was never quite like the show. Xenoverse on the other, does an amazing job replicating the action and visual style that makes Dragonball so interesting, and that is kinetic action and lots of fun battles.

To my knowledge, I have not played a Dragonball game that hit the nail on the head quite like Xenoverse. The visuals are rendered in a way to mimic (dead on imo) the TV series, giving the characters a hand-drawn appearance, but without the drawbacks that go with 2-d animated characters. From the concussive explosions that can be seen as characters fight, or the color palette and little details that adorn characters, the game is fantastic.

Now I love my fighting games and have grown up around the Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat era of 2-d fighters and its usually all about the complexity and the technique for your characters suite of special maneuvers. Dragonball has less on technique in the sense of complicated motions/button combinations and more about ease of use and speed of use. Normally I’d frown on the more stripped down approach but in this game, simplicity is more effective, as the action is fast-paced and the control scheme suits the style of play much more. If Dimps goal was to create an ultra-technical fighter (like others have tried to do in the past) then they failed, but if they wished to create a game with complexity in tactical thought and create a game that emulates the show spot on, then I think they succeeded. I can’t stress enough how well they did with that aspect of gameplay.

Combat in DB XV is more about movement, speed, positioning, multi-tasking (toggling different enemies, fighting multiple opponents at once), and Ki/Stamina bar management. Sure you can button mash and that can get things done just as in every other fighter, but DB XV has many different ways to counter moves, although you can get into some nasty corner traps and get ganged up on by more than one opponent.

During battles (and you will be fighting often, as this is Dragonball after all) you can replicate the moves you’ve seen on the show, from sending enemies flying with a knock-back attack, to teleporting behind enemies to dodge attacks, to bashing your enemies into the ground, DB XV does it well.

The controls are very responsive, although the block animation seems to be a tad sluggish (whether done on purpose as a balancing issue, I don’t know), so don’t expect to do any instant blocking. It becomes less noticeable over time, but it does make blocking a little less intuitive. My only gripe (and I’m playing the PC version) was that the control layout for the controller option (tried playing on mouse and keyboard and it wasn’t pretty) could use more options instead of an A, B, C layout and does require some adaptation.

The music in DB XV is actually very well done and eclectic, offering an interesting mix of musical styles, to which I was surprised (was that a drum n’ base influence I heard on one track?), although I have to say that whoever agreed to the music in the central hub should be punished severely, it sucks that bad (imo).

One of the bigger issues concerning the game (but not a game-breaker for me) is that the online aspect has minor to major issues, depending on who you are, as I have experienced some latency and connection issues, but not to the level that others are reporting, which could mean that they are being resolved, or are dependent on your location.

Overall the game plays like a mix of a fighting/RPG/Exploration game with little gems scattered all over and fan service galore. You usually have wide areas to explore and fight in and can uncover hidden items scattered throughout. A caveat, depending on how much you enjoy the fighting engine, is that there will be GRIND. Lots of grind. MMO-epic style of grinding, although I have to say it is not a mandatory thing up to a point. You will need to grind to level, while the other purpose of grinding is to get special items or powers/moves. For the completionist, it’s a nightmare as the RNG aspect will drive people crazy (took me 10+ tries to do Parallel Quest #14 to get Super Saiyan and I’m probably lucky I got it that way). For me it did get tedious, but I was still enjoying myself immensely.

Bottom line is that, although I’m giving it a 9 (love this game), if you’re not a fan of the series, I’d say its more of a 7 or 8 as it is a solid and fun game with surprising aspects and you can create your own character with lots of customization (one of the best parts).

Very Good game, good work on 1st PC Dbz game, need some tinning but its really fun.

The fighting mechanics feel simple at first but once u get more techniques you start doing impressive combos. Good rooster, i mean everyone is b*** about 2nd and third form freeza and imperfect cell, but who used them anyways. the main story takes a while, not too long but enough, then yo spend

Sadly the online pvp is kinda broken.

    very fun game.

    What I didn't like:

    * You'll get carpal tunnel syndrome first before that rare? loot drops * Meeting quest requirements doesn't always count towards progression * Trying to defend yourself from 2 or more enemies at the same time leaves you with a PTSD * Fighting against enemies who barely flinch and virtually has unlimited stamina that sends you off flying one attack after the other

    * You'll get carpal tunnel syndrome first before that rare? loot drops

    * Trying to defend yourself from 2 or more enemies at the same time leaves you with a PTSD
    * Fighting against enemies who barely flinch and virtually has unlimited stamina that sends you off flying one attack after the other can be really annoying.
    * Supersaiyan transformation is reduced to a timed buff while AI can sustain it during scripted fights.
    * a 5 year old can play better than your AI controlled partners
    * no server support for Asia and connection instability
    * Clunky UI/Menus:
    - no way to preview clothing from the store
    - no way to compare stats of your current equipment while browsing the store
    - no proper in game text chat
    - difficult to get players in your team
    * You always have to run your way back to the quest counter after finishing one
    * You can't fly in toki toki city (lobby), but you can jump that doesn't even get you over low obstacles
    * AI entrances mid fight does a great job of breaking the pace of combat, which isn't really a good thing
    * No kii blast and melee clash system
    * The opening song for the original anime is immortal so there is no need to revive it like the awkward to listen to version used in the game.
    * Day 1 only DLC playable character SS4 Vegeta
    * Color editing is locked for most equipments and there's just not enough hair to make your character really unique
    * Keeping AI (artificial idiot?) controlled characters alive in some quests can be very frustrating

    What I liked:

    * Great visuals
    * Addictive gameplay once you get to know the mechanics better
    * Great replay value
    * Character building
    * Engaging and fun combat

Though short comings hold it back from being the greatest dragon ball game ever, I've never had this much fun since Budokai Tenkaichi's 2 and 3. But since the game is best played with people rather than dumb AI party members, the lack of proper server support for ASIA is really game breaking, for players in Asia at least, except Japan?

Dragon Ball : Xenoverse may not be a revolutionary game , but nevertheless , it is the best dragon ball game in recent years . The character customization is really well done and the game overall is very good . Totally recommend it if you're a DBZ fan , even if you are not

Everyone probably knows the Dragon Ball saga from some point in their childhood.
It spawned many games over the years, however I read that you were never able to participate in the game with your own character.

It spawned many games over the years, however I read that you were never able to participate in the game with your own character.
But here's what I thin of Xenoverse.

    [Gameplay]
Although I hate fighting games in general, I bought this because of nostalgic reasons.
The combat is OK, it feels right when you blast someone from the sky with a Ki blast.
However there are some remarks to be made...

'Guard' doesn't work, once you are stuck inside a combo or blast, there is no way you get out of there.
Because 1. your skills won't go off (for no apparent reason) 2. you have lost all your stamina.

When you start flying using the fast way and stop to attack someone, it takes you several seconds to stop and be able to launch an attack.

Then there is the delay on ultra attacks, you first get an 'awesome' cut scene of your character powering up and executing the move. But 80% of the time, your enemy just teleports away!

I don't know what happened to the servers, but every time I start my game it says the servers are not accessible. Which means multiplayer won't work! Sadly this is a great part of the game, so I hope Bandai will fix this ASAP!

On Quick play they should add the level of the character you play in the filter. I tried multiplayer (when it actually worked) with a new character to see what would happen. I got a 2v2 fight against people with characters at least level 50, it took them 2 seconds to kill me.

    [Story]
I have seen all Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z series, so I know the story progression from the series.
I have to say it was a nice twist Bandai made, creating a fun story to play. And it's nice to fight besides your favourite heroes!
However I do feel the difficulty level is kinda random. One battle is very hard, but if you make it the next will be too easy?! It felt weird.

    [Graphics]
Graphics for combat are nice and finished, however when you watch the story cinematic and animations they really suck! The mouths don't move according to the voices (which in these days should be possible), sometimes the camera glitches during a cut scene, it's not polished at all!

The only thing that is hateful during combat is the camera, it starts bouncing when you fight in close quarters or when you use high speed super/ultra attacks on your enemy.

    [Overall]
For nostalgic reasons, it's a great game. The story is fun and has some weird (original) twists.
Combat is OK and it feels good when you perform devastating attacks. However the defence feels clunky and doesn't really work that great.

The multiplayer should be fixed ASAP, because it's a great part of the game and it has been broken 90% of the time since launch. Then they should tweak the filtering of 'quick matches' so you will end up fighting against characters your own level.

I do not recommend this game to people who don't know Dragon Ball, because it isn't a good fighting game, nor a good MMO. End result: 5.

It sure stands out a lot on it s own good gameplay battle fun with descent rpg elements yet some levels combined with camera issues is horrible if you can overlook these minor hiccups you can enjoy it if you are a DBZ fan

DBX is huge — it can entertain you for dozens, if not hundreds of hours. On the other hand, you have to be a big fan of the series to enjoy the game.

There were dozens of Dragon Ball games, but Xenoverse still managed to surprise me with fresh approach. It’s still primarily a fighting game, but the developers went for many features associated mainly with MMOs. [04/2015, p.56]

Xenoverse blurs the line between video game and anime. Despite a few issues, there’s tons of replay value here, and fans can finally fulfill their dream of putting themselves in Dragon Ball.
