This game is so... blah. It's cool that we finally get to create our own Dragonball characters, but the gameplay is lacking at best. Mash your mouse buttons to melee. What's that? Depth? What's that? Just get the Super Saiyan special and spam your ultimate. Granted, the game at least has a separate story from most games, but you're going to end up fighting the same characters over and over. The overuse of super armor is quite annoying as well, but the biggest design flaw is the reward system. that means grinding. Now, if you're used to Monster Hunter's way of giving you a chance of getting an item as a reward you'll still be annoyed. Some quests have "Ultimate Finishes," which means completing a mission under certain conditions which you aren't told about, this can be very annoying because the missions will tell you about the rewards you could get, but without telling which require an Ultimate Finish. Definitely not worth $60, and DO NOT buy the DLC. Expand

welcome to dragonball xenovere where the enemy AI has infinite energy, spams attacks until you die, and nothing makes sense...where there's no difficulty options and no real replay value besides rpg grinding and broken online play full of cheaters and spammers.

considering that we are in 2015 it is a very bad game, i still don't get it how dbz Budokai Tenkaichi 3, a game that was released on 2007, is better than this one. awful game-play and i am really disappointed , i expected much more.

The game may as well not even have multiplayer. It actually hinders the game in that it will frequently disconnect and it takes several minutes to log in. You can bypass this with steam offline mode, but that is unacceptable for those of us who enjoy chatting up friends between fights.

When online mode does work, it is unreliable, lagging, and the most bugged out netcode I have seen

When online mode does work, it is unreliable, lagging, and the most bugged out netcode I have seen since AOL dial-up. If they ever do fix the server issues, multiplayer will still be broken due to frequent syncing issues and rubber banding.

Due to how integrated the online components of this game are, I can't in my right mind give this more than a 1.

Giving it a 1 to fight the ridiculous people giving it 9's and 10's like it's near perfect. My review is about the single player offline campaign. Servers went down about 14 hours into play. There are offline features in the game labeled offline yet you have silly DRM forcing you to connect to the servers at all times to play. The game mechanics are horrible as some skills don't even connect while hitting the AI. Your character aims too high, or too low regardless of the situation. Like he needs glasses or something. The game mechanics are horrible as some skills don't even connect while hitting the AI. Your character aims too high, or too low regardless of the situation. Like he needs glasses or something. Some combos are really effective, and others are not an option. The lock on feature is broken and will only allow you to lock on with line of sight, yet the AI (teammates) will lock on at the start of the battle regardless of distance or line of sight. The graphics are harsh for a 2015 title. Capes only have a while running feature, and while standing feature. The voice acting is horrible and the lips don't even move during the scenes. The female character as so small compared to the male characters. There is only 1 player slot at the start of game meaning you'll have to delete multiple characters to find the one you want, or beat the game for more slots (complete horse hockey). Feels like a game that is just out of alpha. The exploration area is small and useless. Some items don't have a function other than to look cool, or different from other characters. The items become super expensive as time goes on, and some you can't buy at all and end up grinding for hours to get that one last set piece. Granted I moved on after the side quest didn't drop them after I got a Z rating on it. The game can be beat in less than 6 hours on story mode if you are a gamer that adapts quickly to combat systems. The lack of race options in the start, along with no transformations for specific races or similar powers to level the playing field it would seem the Sayan race is the go to late game. The UI looks like a throwback from a PS2 DBZ title. Some of the buttons are even mislabeled. I had to simply press a few to even make sure what they did. The first DLC is scheduled for march 2015 less than a month after the release. Seems like a money grab to me. The first DLC should be free after the poop in a box that this game was sent out as. Don't even wanna take about scanning for things to pickup during combat. Oh hey look a capsule corp thing over there, punched right in the face during combat for trying that. Someone wasn't thinking that through on the design team.

I'm hoping people will give honest reviews of the game rather than fan boy/girl reviews.

The game has a lot of potential if some of the items I mentioned above are tweaked or outright replaced. At this point in the time the game isn't finished and thus gets a very low review.

Well, chalk this as the 2nd worst DB game right after Ultimate Tenkaichi imho considering they had no technology limitations this time...

    - Clunky battle mechanics, no skill involved at all. Characters are slow to Guard, you can't interrupt your attack to suddenly block, the pace is all over the place from fast to slow to "why the **** is my character taking 2-3 seconds (literally) to turn around and face the enemy that just blew past me/dodge/changed lock to?"
    - Lock-on is downright annoying, in fact it's a struggle to even face the opponent the right way. If you face the wrong way and keep mashing buttons, you will continue to attack that way until you stop, after you stop for 2-3 seconds, your character will finally turn. No words to describe...
    - Controller bindings are unintuitive. Block on LB, who the **** thought that was a good idea? Separate button for Vanish/Teleport.... seriously? L3 to descend and A(Xbox) or X(PS) to ascend, wtf? In some places you use A to interact while in others you use B, cos **** consistency?
    - Limited amount of skillsets. You can only have 4 Supers (including Rushes and Utility), 2 Ultis (Transform/Powerups are Ultis) and 1 Ulti Escape/Interrupt thingie. So you learn all the techniques in the world but you can only use 7, cos **** logic.
    - Less combos than ever and every character has the same ones but with different animations
    - No signature moves per character. Like seriously, I get this game is made around the idea of Customizable characters, but each race should have at least have 1 signature move... They have unlockable ones for certain races, but guess what, Frieza race doesn't have any specific ones for some reason (looked through all), while most of the Human/Saiyan ones are cross compatible with all races.
    - The scouter item discovery is badly implemented. Sends you to 1st Person but you don't have time to look around in a fight at all, plus you can't fly fast or run when using it.
    - The free roam area is incredibly stupid and I want to expand on this a bit: you can jump but there's nothing to jump over as you get stuck on every object you would try to jump over Eg. bench, you can't fly for some stupid reason, you can't run for a reason beyond stupid, the drawdistance is pitiful at most so everything just looks like a rough sketch until you get up close, the whole free roam area basically shouldn't exist, it would of just been easier to make an interface which would spare us a lot of time wasting. (This is on PC as well! I dread to think what it looks like on consoles!)
    - Dialogues are a bleeding pain to all my sense (except smell probably)
    - Only Saiyans have transformations for some reason, even though I can think of 100s of ways of making all classes transform. Eg. Buu transform can be easily narrated in using those time distorting guys to try to make him evil or something, Humans can unlock their potential to Mystic through the Supreme Kai of Time, Namekians can have like a choice to split bodies early on and have an AI bot do parallel bodyguard work and choose to merge at some point (easily narrated in), Frieza can just transform upon reaching certain levels. Point being, if I can think of ways to implement transformations for all of them, it can't be that damn hard to have been done.
    - Maps are still ******* small and there's virtually no destruction, apart from some very short lasting decals.
    - None of the Ki/Physical moves have any impact behind them and stamina is just a ridiculous inconvenience that could have just as well not existed and everything would have been fine.
    - NO POWER STRUGGLES??! WHY??? You clash with someone and you just get a little cinematic (which never changes btw) after which you just break up like a schoolyard fight and land away from each other. No analogue spinning, button mashing, head-nodding, nothing...
    - Don't even get me started on the item drops. The side quests (Parallel Quests or PQs) say the drop these good powers and armor, but in truth, they are random drops. A small search on the Internet will tell you how many people haven't got the Raditz armor promised in one of the first PQs even after doing it 10 times or more.

A cringeworthy outing, full of spammy combat, coming from the design school of "inconvenience = challenge," full of random number generation and therefore repetition and camping even more extreme than the training of the characters, unbalanced character classes, poor customization, and always-online DRM. Its main virtues are that the graphics decently emulate the latter DBZ style, and you can design your own Dragon Ball character - as muddled up with late-DBZ dogma, retconning and annoying advertising for the new installments in the franchises as it is. You can have a "Majin" (as in Majin Buu) character but not an artificial human or animal-person, as though there's some precedent for a majority of the former but not the latter. Overall a very cynical and uninspired show. Expand

There were dozens of Dragon Ball games, but Xenoverse still managed to surprise me with fresh approach. It’s still primarily a fighting game, but the developers went for many features associated mainly with MMOs. [04/2015, p.56]

Xenoverse blurs the line between video game and anime. Despite a few issues, there’s tons of replay value here, and fans can finally fulfill their dream of putting themselves in Dragon Ball.
