Without a doubt, A*POP is a much riskier and more personal effort than Tyla, which was the type of accessible, star-making debut engineered to be an across-the-board smash. Give it a few more listens and A*POP reveals itself to be equally worthwhile.

At 14 songs, the bolshie A*Pop gets a little overconfident – closer Hot Tubs isn't as interesting as its title suggests; the mid-tempo Fairytale is a bit wet – and its focus on love's highs and lows a tad limiting, but as a bold statement of intent for an old-school superstar, it's close to top marks.

More expansive without losing its intimacy and more ambitious without becoming overwhelming, it feels like an artist stepping fully into her own world and inviting everyone else inside.

‘A*Pop’ is a surprisingly cautious follow-up. Where ‘Tyla’ introduced an artist confidently reshaping amapiano’s relationship with global pop, this sequel largely settles for polishing what already worked instead of pushing it somewhere new.
