More than 10 years of developments separates Doom 2, Doom 3, and Doom (2016). And what an achievement. Each time, we get a chance to receive the most technically advanced sci-fi shooter in the scariest, post apocalyptic world that even Hollywood people have hard time defining in recent movie productions. Mars has never been so good looking.

In a nutshell this is an incredibly satisfying, intense, mature shooter, ... that is hard to master.

As a fan of the original, I came to the 2016 Doom with very high expectations and I was still impressed. It is not hard to take notice that the developers were fans of the original Doom as well, because the core gameplay plays and feels exactly like the original. This may sound odd and critical, but I only mean to praise. There was something extremely satisfying about the original DoomAs a fan of the original, I came to the 2016 Doom with very high expectations and I was still impressed. It is not hard to take notice that the developers were fans of the original Doom as well, because the core gameplay plays and feels exactly like the original. This may sound odd and critical, but I only mean to praise. There was something extremely satisfying about the original Doom -which to this date very few FPSs achieved-, whether it is the music and sound effects, the gunplay or the monsters. Doom introduces a new concept called “Glory Kill”. When you inflict enough damage, monsters start to stagger triggering the ability to execute a Glory Kill, a gory visual that feels immensely satisfying. Music is awesome, even if it isn’t as good as in the original Doom and I have found myself headbanging while doing glory kills one after the other. The whole time I played through the campaign, I felt the same sense of addictive gameplay and fun of the original Doom.

Is it perfect? No. The multiplayer was obviously not the main focus of the game designers (in fact the development thereof was outsourced), but it is still fun to play as a good old FPS deathmatch if you keep your expectations low. As for the single player, the levels lack variety and overall look and feel quite similar. I could not help but feel déjà vu throughout the campaign. Gameplay can also feel repetitive at times, considering the entire campaign has a very obvious loop of throwing monsters at you. Story is also trivial, but chances are slim that you play Doom for the story.

But all its shortcomings are easily forgiven, because playing Doom is so much fun.

PS: If you are any good in FPSs, I highly recommend playing this in ultra-violence difficulty. It is challenging, yet never unfair. I have the feeling this is how the game is meant to be played.

Great monsters, awesome level design. Old school mechanics: wave of monsters, kill them all, bigger wave of monsters, kill them all. Avoid this if you want some kind of "thinking" shooter.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review may contain some spoilers. I will try to avoid anything to crucial.

I'll start out by saying that DOOM is a fantastic reimagining of the original 93' and 94' mindless shooters that started the FPS genre, and I use the word mindless in a positive way. Doom has always been a game with relatively no plot line; it's killing for the sake of killing. The game focuses on its core mechanics of run-and-gun gameplay, never really letting up the action. Doom profits from this greatly. Whereas other modern day shooters try to focus on a lot of story segmented into the action - because lets face it, your happiest when you're shooting a gun on CoD or Battlefield - Doom tries to keep story at a distance, yet somehow manages to nail the perfect balance needed to keep you engaged.

As soon as you begin, you're given a brief introduction of your goal by an ominous voice: "Rip and tear, until it is done!" and that's your objective for the rest of the game. Shoot anything in your path and move fast enough to avoid them doing the same to you. Within 20 seconds of the game starting, you're killing demons, and it continues like that from there. You will unlock new weapons, upgrade them to do a variety of different things (and by that I mean variety of ways to kill more demons), unlock perks to enhance your gameplay and make you tougher and faster as the game progresses. It's action at its purest form, and that is the helm that Doom has held for the past 25 years and shows that it is still deserving of that mantle.

The story is simple enough to give what the other games didn't: reason. It explains why the demons have been unleashed on Mars, how it happened, why it all started, and even (this is perhaps the most fascinating part of the story) goes into details about Doom Marine's origins. This aspect is taken to a level that is somewhat absurd as it paints Doom Marine as an ancient being who has been fighting the demon hordes for over a millennia. Demons have scripture about him written into their home: Hell, and he is heavily feared amongst all of the evil he faces. This is not only an interesting plot point, but is a nice homage to the badass feeling the original 90's games evoked amongst their players. It solidifies Doom Marine as this ultimate beast, and many players who played all those years ago will recognise that amazing testament to his legacy. Overall, the story was enough to keep me intrigued about the game's events as I fought my way through Mars and Hell and was actually more than I was expecting. It's a nice addition to the game if nothing else.

In terms of campaign, that's all there really is to say. It's very well done in every aspect and is the game's strongest part. The multiplayer however is awful. For me, it doesn't bring the game's score down too much (it would be a ten if there was no multiplayer) but it's a very downgraded, very annoying version of what you get in the campaign. Everything feels like it has been kind of slapped together. The maps are okay, though can be confusing, but the hitboxes on other players and the overall gameplay is extremely bad. You will die a lot due to reasons you can't explain, or just because it's a massive cluster of explosions and grenades and damage you can't avoid with skill. The game just falls into chaos and degrades the experience. Multiplayer does offer a huge range of cosmetics, such as changing your armour pieces, armour color, your taunts such as dance moves, etc. Unfortunately, you need to have fun in multiplayer to have fun with these trinkets, and in my experience, that is a rarity.

The other third of the game is the map and game mode creator called Snap Map. This is actually a really cool feature with tons of gameplay hours you can sink into it. You can play community made maps and build your own. There are lots of options in building your own maps, some of it quite complex, though it is intuitive and easy to pick up. A few tutorials on Youtube should help you get set if you are a little overwhelmed.

Overall, the game is brilliant. The campaign alone is worth a buy and it does justice to the DOOM name. I'd never played the originals until recently as I was only born a few years later, so I missed out on that rise of the FPS genre, but going back and playing them was awesome and really helps me appreciate the game series overall. I can say as a new player to Doom, this really sucked me into the series as a whole, and I'm sure if you're a fan of the original two, you will love this game! Just don't go looking for too much in the multiplayer as you may be disappointed.

DOOM 3 make something different back in 2004, instead of the action gameplay it took the survival horror roots with slow shooting and it focus more on the storytelling aspect than the overall gameplay, still it wasn't a bad game... i really like it a lot. But with this entry ID Software decidde to dive into the "nostalgia" trend and this is how we got DOOM 2016.
The game has a story, but is not extremely detailed and the game does not put too much attention to it and well the story follows the premise of the original game, a portal that bring hell to a mars space station and the doom slayer most stop it. Even still with the little narrative the game has it manage to tell a full story.
Enemy design was made to asimilate the original designs from the original game, of course some enemies were cut from the game.
The level design is a mix of old and new, so it doesnt look outdated on it's design and this is were some games that tried to cash in on the "nostalgic" trend failed, but DOOM manage to make it look fresh.
Visually it's amazing with cool ilumination, post processing effects that add depth and particle systems really makes it look like a beast of the game, and it still holds up even now in 2020 and it performs really well on GTX 1080Ti.
Now the most important facor the gameplay... DOOM 2016 offers on it's levels hidden sectrets like rooms or easter eggs. The combat system is really good and fluent without the need of reloading your gun, the game encourage you to use every weapon in your arsenal to get a better experience and if your not switching weapons, well... your playing it wrong, the game adds a new feature the glory kills that add a new way to finish demons from their misery, this feature has it's advantage like... getting health from killing this demons, the chainsaw makes a return too if you want to cut enemies in two and it has its advantages llike getting ammo from enemies.
overall DOOM 2016 is an excellent game and worth checking out if you havent play it yet, best option is the PC port, right now is pretty cheap on STEAM and it comes with all DLCs included, the MP portion wasn't exactly that popular when it launch and today it's pretty dead that's why all DLCs were given for free after a while.
    But anyway... GREAT GAME.

This game is a nonstop violence fest, and I love it. Everything about the game is laser-focused on fast-paced, aggressive combat, and I love it. Even as someone who traditionally favors medium to long range combat in shooters, DOOM's emphasis on being aggressive and playing almost exclusively at short range makes the game super fun, and the game is designed beautifully around that.

It was a long time since I felt like this again. If you have played classic FPS you know what I mean: the tension, the immersion, the pain in the hands and the relief once you are killed. They knew how to get back to the roots, a fast peace shooter like the first they created. This is not for fans of COD or Battlefield. It's for classic FPS players.

Story: Although game play was clearly the main focus of the devs they didn't skimp out on the story . Doomguy is one of the most compelling silent protagonists ever , it was interesting to see just how doom guy interacts with the world too see him rage his way through the hordes of demons . the only thing he cares about is killing demons and it makes you want to know why he is so angry. the only other characters in this game are Sam hayden who seems to be an android , and Olivia, Olivia being the one that opens the portal to hell and let this whole mess loose. sam hayden being the one who gives you objectives that doom guy promptly ignores and just smashes everything.
    story and characters: 9/10

world building: there is plenty of lore injected into doom. i really liked how the sam haydens company is mining hell for its resources and the way everything looks tells me he was fairly successful before the **** hit the fan . that's another thing i like about this game is its a lot of show and not a lot of tell often learning whats been going on through doom guys interactions and how things look . when you pick up the super shotgun(double barrel) it appears thats its previous user had committed suicide with it
    world building: 8/10

graphics : this is one of the best looking games iv ever played , from the explosions to the guns to the animations to the environments everything looks beautiful and it helps that the game runs on constant 60 fps , and the style of hell and cyber punk mixed really well concept artists did a really good job.
    graphics: 9/10

game play: i don't normally like classic style fps games like this But i had so much fun with this game it was a joy to play , its was the right mix of challenging and making me feel like a bad-ass . the game play is a big middle finger to the cinematic games like call of duty and battlefield . very few cut scenes mostly action. all guns feel satisfying and balanced and enemy types act differently learning the different behaviors and figuring out how to counter them is also intuitive game design.
    Gameplay: 9/10

Sound design: Dooms sound design is the highlight of this game , every song ramps it up and is some of the most intense music iv ever heard , this game dose something cleaver by heaving the music react to what you are doing , so every glory kill you get the music gets more intense . but it doesn't do this by just tacking on more sound it actually use clever transitions and editing making this the most enjoyable and metal game ever
    sound design 10/10

The enemies also puts an exciting adrenaline rush to the gameplay, which forces the player to constantly move and be aware of the surroundings. One of the reasons all of these parts work so well is because the game never wastes the player's time. Every quicktime event and cutscene generally lasts for five seconds at maximum and then immediately cuts back to gameplay seamlessly. The soundtrack in this game is also incredible, with its thundering guitar riffs and explosive drums, while also adding some groovy techno beats into the mix, it truly sounds like a heavy metal wet dream at some parts. The Snapmap editor is also phenomenal, as long as you are creative and imaginative, and you can create some really impressive levels in there. The only big problem with the game is the multiplayer, because it doesn't contain the charm of the singleplayer and feels very modern (class customization, emotes, etc.). While it is still decent, thanks to the somewhat vertical level design, it's nowhere near as good as the campaign. I'd say that you most definitely boy this game, solely for the singleplayer with its riveting soundtrack. while the multiplayer feels lacking, the Snapmap editor will come as a fun surprise, and I strongly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys this hobby.

So you can't go back more than one checkpoint. This is a huge flaw.

Doom I & Doom II was probably the first FPS games that I tried out on PC in my life. And boy this is just how I would hope they would remake Doom.

I am not a big fan of horror games, but this is really well-done. Really interesting story and well-told through out the game(play). Amazing level-design, amazing design of the demons, weapons, music. Basically everything is very well made.

The glory kills are satisfying as hell and the brilliant map design keeps the combat fast. The boss fights seem easy at first, but they still whoop your ass. It's a perfect blend between Modern and old school combat. The story was nit their focus in this game but it's still pretty intriguing. The doom slayer might be my favourite new protagonist. He is a living example of 'actions speak louder than words' Instead of boring you with 500 hour dialogue and cutscenes, the game keeps them flashy and to the point.Technically, the game is amazing as well. The graphics are breathtaking when compared to the original doom and the game runs very smoothly on my PC,with a sweet fps lock of 120,never dropping even a frame. The snapmap is very accessible and easy to master and gives you a fair share of tools. The only thing keeping this game back from a 10 is the underwhelming multiplayer. Honestly, I thought the game would shorter, so I was positively surprised. The graphics is really beautiful and suits the doom world perfectly. Also, the game font is very nice. The soundtrack is just fantastic: pure heavy metal and sometimes variations on the original doom music. The Introduction of the glory kill makes the combat even more fun and forces you to move through the battlefield more. The second highest difficulty was perfect for me throughout the whole game. No microtransactions, no SJW crap.

Just pure fun, this is what an FPS game should be like. Final Verdict: 88 %

First Doom game I've played so I went into this as a virgin and came out with Doom 2016 being my favorite first person shooter I've ever played. It isn't a typical first person shooter by any means, and kinda spits in the face of modern gaming tropes. Really refreshing. I loved this and look forward to playing Doom Eternal if I ever get the time.

Doom is a 2016 first-person shooter game developed by id Software and published by Bethesda Softworks. Players take the role of an unnamed space marine, known as the "Doom Slayer", as he battles demonic forces from Hell that have been unleashed by the Union Aerospace Corporation within their energy-mining facility on Mars.

The game that revived the franchise, and a damn good one. Now it feels tame compared to ETERNAL, but it's raw combat, and the glory kills, the industrial aesthetic, still make it a unique experience, one that I've loved every single minute since launch.

No forced playstyle, dark and scary atmosphere, dynamic and brutal gameplay with no bs at all. Great optimalization and quality of the audio & visuals. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Old school fast-paced shooter. RPG elements are a bit unbalanced - the only upgrades you should worry about are Argent Energy Cells (they increase max health, armor, ammunition). The others are quite optional and you don't have to look around the map for them. Also, after getting the Super Shotgun, the game becomes a lot easier - especially if you complete the challenge and have two shots instead of a single one. The weapon is simply super powerful and it is great against any opponent - the only problems I had with bosses, who don't show up until the second half of the game anyway. I had recently been replaying Doom 3 and you wouldn't believe what a refreshing game THIS doom is compared to the previous entry in the series. Combat has a very good flow to it, with melee finishers, gunplay and various mixtures of enemies all coming together to create quite a rewarding experience. Its very frantic on the higher difficulties and its where the game seems to feel the most satisfying. The music, aside from the absolutely terrible opening Doom themesong remix, is fine and is certainly a welcome addition to the ambient droning background noise that embodied Doom 3's soundtrack. These are techno pumping tunes that almost made me feel like I had just put the original Quake II cd into my cd-rom drive. Perhaps not quite that level of quality, but once again, its a nice change of pace. Pace is a keyword here, I've been playing for around an hour and have not felt too bored by any particular sequence, the elimination "rooms" as I refer to them are loads of fun and I wouldn't necessarily call them repetitive. If you want to call them repetitive, than I suppose Turok 2's enemy filled portal rooms were repetitive too, however I think in this case its a respectful nod to the Turok series, whether the developers realized it or not. The visuals are fine and are definitely add a more refined look to the classic enemies from the older games, though I am a little upset that some of the enemy designs from Doom 3 didn't (or have yet to) show up to the rehearsal. I would advise everyone with two eyes and a brain to turn off some of the visual features that add nothing to the experience, i.e. depth of field, motion blur, chromatic aberration,.. these are all useless features and don't particularly enhance the game stylistically speaking. The campaigns story is a bit derivative, since thus far its been a (mostly) retread of the Doom 3's plot, which is not so much disappointing as it is, well, "troubling." I'm annoyed that they couldn't be bothered to be a little more original with a franchise that has literally not even bothered to have much of a plot since the third game tried its hand at creating one. All this aside, Doom 4 is an action game, it allows for a lot more mobility than any of the previous games, isn't concerned about making itself spooky, and doesn't have monster closets and those are all positives for me. Sure the level design and environments are more open, but you have to remember that the reasons they designed the original Doom games the way they did is because it was not feasible to even have the kind of open environments and level design you see in 2016's iteration. I'm not intimidated by a first person shooter moving away from cramped corridors and feeling more like Quake 3 and neither should you. Besides, in my opinion the third Doom game was only as claustrophobic as it was for mainly one reason, they didn't know what else to do with the level design. So they played it safe. This game is far better than RAGE and at least three or four (maybe even five) times better than the third Doom game, but is it better than the originals? My answer will always be no, because of the amount of respect I have for the original games and the changes they brought to videogames (historically speaking of course). However, I cannot say or will not say that Doom 4 misses the point of the originals or is anything near average, its most assuredly above average. So if you were one of the ones that played the multiplayer BETA and were not entertained by it, check out the game at least for the single player, it will hopefully change your perspective on the whole game. It's awesome to blast shotguns and rev chainsaws at whatever crawls out of hell while some hard rock music is playing, though after the 203rd time, this starts to dampen the experience. The gameplay is very repetitive and there's not too much story, but that's not a huge negative, that's what Doom is about: blasting everything in your path with no unskippable cutscenes or overly long briefings.

The graphics and animations are a solid 12 out of 10. And I've performed melee "glory kills" over and over just to witness the beautiful animations this game has. Though I'd normally give this game a 7, the multiplayer and snapmap bring it up to 8. The multiplayer isn't the greatest, but it's still creative and fun enough to enjoy for a while. And the snapmaps-coop gameplay can be painfully fun depending on the map that's being played.

I wouldn't call this "game of the year", but it's still worth the $59.99.

DOOM is a re-imagining of the genre-defining classic shooter which manages to stay true to its roots whilst brining in a healthy dose of modern enhancements.

As with classic Doom, health, armor and ammo are pick-up based (no regeneration), there are only 10 weapons which are unlocked throughout the game (via exploration), there is no reloading, there are very few cutscenes and it's just fast-paced demon-slaying action all the way. Although on the surface it sounds like it's extremely repetitive, there are some excellent additions to keep the experience more entertaining. Firstly, as with all good classic shooters, there is a clear emphasis on exploration. You are rewarded for exploring the game's vast levels not just with meaningless collectibles and background reading, but with useful resources that will help you develop your demon-slaying capabilities. For example, each weapon can be customised with two weapon mods found from Field Drones, and each attachment can be upgraded using upgrade points, and even then there is a challenge for each mod to further enhance its capabilities. You can also upgrade the Doom Marine's suit and capabilities - again, this is almost exclusively from exploration. There are also Runes - mini challenges with a given set of conditions in an arena which, if completed, unlocks a "perk" (you can have three equipped at once) which can then be further enhanced by completing the challenges. Each level also has its own three challenges to complete. There are even sections of classic Doom maps to be found in each level! So to get the point across: there are some light RPG elements which are non-disruptive but also stay true to the spirit of the original. Furthermore, dying does not reset progress towards challenges, so it doesn't feel like a grind.

The campaign is a fair length - especially if, like me, you try to explore every last nook and cranny of the levels. With an exploration-intensive playstyle, expect to spend around an hour minimum per level and there are 13 levels. It is best played on Ultra-Violence (the hardest starting difficulty available) since it feels challenging and intense as it should but becomes easier when you've got loads of upgrades later on in the game.

In terms of performance, DOOM is extremely well-optimized on both Vulkan and OpenGL 4.5 graphics APIs. Even on a modest gaming rig (GTX 1060 6GB, i5-3470, 12GB RAM) the holy grail of 4K Ultra 60 FPS is achievable (though admittedly with around 75% resolution scaling) on OpenGL, and around 130 FPS at 1080p Nightmare settings.

In terms of additional content, DOOM has a multiplayer component which is, as expected, an arena shooter with the usual game modes and extremely light customisation. Whilst this sounds great, it isn't especially balanced because of some consumable "perks" which put higher-level players at an advantage. The gameplay is also not satisfying in my opinion, and it just feels like a mess. I'm usually a fan of "tacked-on" multiplayers due to their simplicity, but Doom's doesn't do it for me; though perhaps more skilled players who enjoy games like Quake and Unreal Tournament might enjoy it.

Perhaps the most novel feature of DOOM is SnapMaps; allowing you to create your own levels complete with their own objectives, enemeies, AI behaviour, pickups etc. The interface and tutorials for doing these are fairly good, but as with all "game creators", it is extremely time-consuming to do something simple. Still, it's a nice addition, though I haven't seen anything particularly stand out made by the community.

Overall, DOOM 2016 is exactly the kind of game I hoped it would be. Everything from the weapons, gameplay, enemies, levels and even the option to have that classic centred weapon pose (as opposed to the ubiquitous right-handed pose of modern shooters) are reminiscent of the classic Doom games, and I'm pleased to say that Doom's spirit has aged beautifully. This is a shining example of how to modernise a classic game series without losing its essence.

Doom updated for 2016. Fast paced action. Find keys to complete levels. Feels and plays great. Did not expect it to be good, but could not stop playing for a few days.

Wow, so much nerd rage about this game! Some people have astronomically high expectations. If you played all the previous Doom titles (at launch like me), then you will thoroughly appreciate this game.

I'll just pro and con this instead of writing a novel like the polemics:

    Pros:
    1. Spirit of the Doom franchise was given great attention; monsters from the franchise appear in refreshing new ways.

    2. Single player maps have what made the previous games great (except for Doom 3 maybe): multi dimensional mazes with lots of secrets and exploration. I don't understand why some think this game is linear.

    3. Fantastic graphics, especially if you can max it out.

    4. Great audio with a heavy metal sound.

    5. Weapons and armor upgrades added a lot to this game. Intersting approach to the chainsaw. BFG remains the same!

    6. Game play is very fun. Those complaining about being locked in areas then fighting an arena style brawl with demons are showing utter disregard for the previous Doom titles.

    7. Story was tenuous but there; I don't know why some people are expecting a saga like the Elder Scrolls games, it's **** DOOM!

    Cons:

    1. Single player campaign is very short, but in line with the length of other first person shooters.

    2. Multiplayer is pretty basic with few custom options, but Bethesda/Id says they're working on this. Not really interested in MP anyway. The campaign is the showcase.

    3. Though the audio was good, I think they missed some opportunities to rehash the music from the old games.

    4. I really dislike the checkpoint style game saving. Not because I want to save scum so desperately, but because time between checkpoints is pretty long especially if you're trying to clear all the secrets.

    5. Points of no return: WHY? I hate this the most about the game. Don't jump down any holes or manually lift any doors unless you've cleared all the secrets first!

All in all, a game worthy of the Doom moniker. Certainly better than Doom 3.

Even though arena-like style of gameplay may get boring at times, playing on ultra-violence still brings a lot of fun since movement and weapon game mechanics are done well and the game gives you everything you need to win.

I love how many aspects and most monsters from the original DOOM are brought back into this game. The shootout battles that ensue are very fun and extremely intense at times, especially on a harder difficulty. A few downsides though stop this title from becoming a masterpiece, but it is still absolutely worth a play-through or two. Negatives include an overall short single player campaign and a multiplayer option that is hard to get into because there are so many other choices out there. Expand

I found this to be a really fun game to play. Not usually a big fan of these kind of FPS, but it just does it well. You can relax and just blow away some demons in a quick session or settle in for a long play through. Single Player is well worth it alone.

I have seen a lot of people claiming that there is a major lack of variety and that the game is painfully repetative...in my opinion...they're kinda wrong.

Look, its 2016. There's been a truck load (like...LITERALLY a truck load) of FPS shooters flood the market over the last few decades and this means that if you give your game a first person perspective, you straight away face immense competetion and are already slightly derirative. So its refreshing to see a company (the company that kind of invented the whole FPS genre no less) take a MASSIVE step into the past and just plain ignore all of the conventions and conveniences that we have in modern day FPS games.

    Reload button? No chance!
    Sprint button? Pish!
Hide until your health recovers? Pitiful!
Aim down Sights? Ha! Actually...alright you can have a little bit of that

I can totally respect how this would make the game feel light on content and repetative, but for me, it made the game slicker, streamlined and ultimately more dangerous. Instead of plodding from poorly conceived cover point to cover point, you frantically thrash around smashing, slicing, shooting, exploding and ripping demons to pieces. Sometimes you get through a frenetic, violent encounter by the skin of your teeth, sometimes you style it out like a motherfudging G and feel like a Boss for doing so.

Doom is fun. Doom is fresh, Doom is MENTAL.

There's a single player campaign and even here it feels fresh because ID software are almost openly mocking the idea of having a story. Yeah go here and do that, and you do go there and do that, but Mr Doom Marine cares not for such feeble motives, he is there to kick ass and chew bubblegum...and that mofo is ALL outta gum.

Multiplayer manages to maintain the frentic pace of the single player and is therefore almost equally satisfying, although having an above average internet connection speed is of paramount importance. Snap map has the potential to give Doom an almost indefinite replayability factor if it can attract a big enough community, dont hate on the weaker maps, support them and foster a constructive environment and great things could happen.

I really enjoyed Doom, think its a fantastic callback to what made the FPS genre great in the first place. I can understand why some people feel let down, the lack of survival horror elements that Doom 3 introduced is a shame, but in all honesty Doom was never a survival horror game. The streamlined gameplay might feel a little lacking to those who are used to killstreaks and modifiers, but theres still plenty of room for strategy and ingenuinty in here.

    Very happy with my purchase!

    We’re doomed, I tell ya

If you’re familiar with DOOM 3 you’ll have a pretty good idea what to expect from DOOM 2016, although, in truth, it’s actually a little different, if memory serves me. There’s plenty to like here if you enjoy fast-paced arena-style battles with loads of enemies, big guns, and masses of demon gore. That’s basically what the DOOM games do and they do it very well.

There is a story here, although I tended to forget about it most of the time because I was too busy jumping, strafing, and trying to stay alive. I seem to recall that the story in D3 had more impetus and that the combat was more diverse in style, but I could be remembering incorrectly (I’ll have to play it again to see). DOOM 2016 looks pretty good and it ran well (3 crashes in total, always alt-tab related). The music is fantastic and perfectly suited to the game. Personally, I find boss fights a little tedious and annoying but luckily there aren’t too many here, and those that there are didn’t irritate me, as they have, at times, in other games. Overall this is a good addition to the DOOM canon; it’s a blast from start to finish and is thoroughly enjoyable.

I have played Doom three times in thirteen days! However I really don't really know what score to rate Doom 2016.

It's a bit complicated why I am undecided. If you search out every secret you get plenty of upgrades, you do reasonably well. However it forces this. Basically if you don't search out the secrets which earn upgrade points you get battered. The battering comes in the form of many deaths and the fact that Doom has sold-out to checkpoints. Sending you maybe 20, 40, or 60 demons to kill again.

Gitgud plays a part in this game. My second playing of the campaign was better, because I had adjusted finally to the pace. However, without those upgrades it's still hellish hard.

My first playthough I only found about maybe 40% of the secrets and I was distraught with Doom. I died ten, twenty, thirty times at many checkpoints. I was feeling, "What is the point?" It was battering me and I had nothing to fight back with. I missed the graphics because I was so distressed. When I cleared an area I did not look around much. I wanted to get out before another demon spawned and killed me.

However on second playthrough, experience and secrets, and it was a gun-toting blast. I got the graphics settings looking better by adding 'nightmare' textures. (Not adding nightmare shadows because the GTX 980 can't handle that at 60fps.) I used FXAA(1TX) and it really cleaned up the image and it looked phenomenal. Parts like the science labs looked stunning.

On this second play-through I would rate it 9/10 but for a few aspects. The designers made mistakes. Like early on there are parts of mining areas on the Mars surface, that are not connected. You had to jump to get from one place to another. Why? There would be roads and bridges. ...There were Argent Energy upgrade cells in Hell. However they were placed thoughout the Mars facility by Samuel Hayden.

Other aspects that annoyed me were:
Doom 2016 was just an arena shooter
Scaling the Tower was terrifying as an acrophobic (scared of heights)
Supplies flying at you from slain enemies is OK in a sword and sorcery game. Not in our good old favourite shooter.
The worst offence off all was this.........Doom has been changed from a shooter to part street-fighter. The melee finishes are forced on the player to gain supplies of health etc. Gone is the satisfaction of 100% putting your enemies down with guns. Now it's about 38% melee finishes. Much moreore if you are struggling with difficulty settings.

The positives are that the graphics are stunning, except for there being too much orange. The guns are perfect. The enemies of old are cool, though I hate the pinkies screeching pig noises.

How do I rate it: anything from 6 -- to 9.2---- out of ten.

Dooms game design is perfect for what it is trying to accomplish. But if your fps skills aren't good, you won't be able to enjoy this. Even on the easiest of difficulties settings.
