The game looks absolutely beautiful. The Game-play is very fun and addicting. The sheer brutality and gore of the game is astonishing. The level design is very well, making you jump, shoot, throw grenades, punch and kill demons all around the place. The soundtrack is very adhesive and fits very well with the environment. Overall a great reboot and a cliffhanging ending which makes you excited and pumped for the next entry in the franchise. Expand

My original guess was that it was going to pander to console players by making it slower ( I thought this after I saw the scroll wheel that slowed down game play.) It has been a long while since I have seen a shooter with intelligent map design, design which rewards players for playing the game at a faster pace, in fact I rarely found myself stopping in between combat, if at all. Campaign is a blast and the full package. Multiplayer is also quite a bit of fun to play, the loadouts are not my favorite setup, but they make sense - and take a lot of the weapon spawn camping aspect out of the game (which is rampant in other frag fest games like this one.)

Honestly I was in shock at how thoroughly polished this game felt. Negative reviews on here seem really silly, to the point I feel the negative ratings are there strictly to bring the score down or troll - you cannot loose with this title.

The game is HECTIC, you'll be shooting demons almost at all times, with some brief moments to rest where the game tells you a bit of story or you are trying to find the way to move forward. Those classic FPS weren't about the story, but the guns, the blood, the enemies, the challenge...Doom has all of that. You're killing demons 30 seconds after the game begins, just to let you imagine what kind of game this is.

For once I'm going to write a review, because it's ridiculous that people are giving it scores of Zero through Four.

Doom (2016) is the successor to the good ol' Doom of 1993 - if you're after the 'survival horror' of Doom 3, this ain't it - that was never the point of the series. If you're going to hold the game to the standard of a sequel that shared nothing with it's predecessors, of course you're going to be annoyed. You're also going to be wrong. [...strange how they re-titled from Doom 4.]

    Here's the long and short of it;

    - The single player campaign is a solid 12 hours on a reasonable difficulty and without going out of your way to find all the secrets or collectables. That says nothing about completing it on higher difficulties, or with permadeath enabled (so tack on another 12+ hours).

    - The gameplay is fast as anything, it rewards you for keeping up momentum and has so many small mechanics that help ensure you're constantly on the go. The chainsaw's been given an overhaul to make it into a limited use weapon that replenishes your ammunition, and the finishing 'Glory Kills' give you back health, it just works.

    - The progression/customisation is pretty engaging without being an obstruction to shooting things. Almost every weapon has two modifications, each modification has three additional upgrades, and once you've unlocked all the upgrades - you're given a 4th 'Mastery' upgrade that rewards you for getting neat kills (double-kills with single shots, locking on to targets who can teleport...)

    - You've got an awesome array of Collectables, Secrets, and Codex entries that give you an insight into the storyline, without having it rammed down your throat through cutscenes or hindering the player. They've hidden a level of the original Doom in each of the 2016 levels, grab 'em all and you've got yourself a free game. Winner.

    - Multiplayer's fine. It's tacked on, and it's nothing special - but as an added bonus for an awesome single player experience, why bother complaining? Don't like it, go play one of the million other multiplayer FPS titles you've got at your disposal. It too has a boatload of customisation and challenges, so we can add a couple more hours onto our running total.

    - The exposition of the story is flawless. Doomguy rightly remains mute across the game, but you're given such a deadpan comical insight into his mindset. The game throws you into combat within the first 30 seconds and it genuinely doesn't let up bar a couple of (one-sided) conversations. It all flows from one scene to the next, it makes perfect sense, and you really get a feel for the overarching narrative - without any of it being made painfully explicit

    - If storyline isn't your thing, there's a whole challenge system based around collecting Runes and earning Combat Rating. Runes offer you gameplay related bonuses - extra ammo drops, wider pick-up radius, while the Combat Rating gives you weapon upgrades if you're able to achieve specific criteria (Finishing a Baron of Hell with an aerial attack, for example)

Basically, and as always on this website, I've got no idea why people are rating it so low. One guy's saying this game would be better if it retailed for $10/£6...

I see his point, it would be nice (for us, probably less so for id/Bethesda), but it's a ludicrous request. If a cinema trip's gonna set you back £15 for some food and two hours of visuals - you can cough up £30 for 20 times that content.

The game's fine. It's a 9-10 if you've got nostalgia for early FPS titles, it's a 7 if you don't care for it that much, but by no means is it below a 5.

This website is living proof of why the hoi polloi can't be trusted with a mouthpiece.

The levels are big with many challenges and secrets within them which will keep you engaged. The combat is epic with vast amounts of weapons to choose from as well as enemy that will challenge you (if you are not playing on easy mode of course). The multiplayer is fun as well, it's more skill based than your average CoD or Halo but it does have it unique twist on it. Here is a short summery of the game.

    Single player
    Pro:
+ Length (took me 10h without 100% completion on hard difficulty)
+ Combat it will keep you engaged
    + Puzzle/labyrinth like level design
+ Secret that actually benefit you
+ Option to upgrade you arsenal without pushing/forcing you in to it
+ Good enemy progression, as you progress through the game demons come in more and bigger variety.
+ Glory kills do not slow down the paste of the game even if you chain them. Quick fast and satisfying.
    + Weapon arsenal is massive
    + Bosses are FUN!

    Cons:
    - Size of enemy demons could be bigger
    - On nightmare difficulty instead of giving demons more HP+DAM they should of increased the amount with much faster demon progression. Like getting 1 pinky on the first demon arena
    - Bodies teleport away a bit too fast. While I do understand why they need to teleport away it would be nice to have option for PC to keep them permanently or increase duration.

    Multiplayer
    Pro:
+ A bit more casual and relaxed compared to other games that are out there
+ There is a competitive mode
+ Glory kills feel fantastic after you work a guy for a while
+ Demons runs are fun and easy to counter
+ Loadouts(it's a plus because it allows new players be introduced in to the genre)

    Cons:
    - No music, which is odd, doom has the music but for some reason they cut it out of multi which is just odd. Hopefully will be patched in as an option at least
    - No detailed server browser, it would be nice to have it so that people can connect to a lower ping games.
    - Hit detection, sometimes you get hit and you don't even notice it or getting hit around the corner.

Over all a solid 10 for me because I just cannot stop having fun. It's something that was long overdue. I got 15h in to the game so far and planning on having many more.

(Glad I purchased this on PC and not ps4 as I don't know how a ps4 controller would hold up to this type of game). The pace is perfect, levels are well designed, armor and health pickups everywhere just like oldschool times, and it just feels FUN to play, not frustrating like battlefield or Call of Duty, just FUN! ... I understand the criticism that this game may be "too much" like the old school fps genre, and I think SOME modern improvements to certain things would have helped, but would have been hard to do without screwing up the whole "old school" feel. I am getting the feeling that the vast majority of the people giving negative reviews have not actually played the first two DOOM games! The people giving this game a 0 just to bring down the score need to be stopped. For that reason I will give it a 10, but in all honesty, I think it's a solid 8. Expand

Whatever the case, giving a game such as this 4's, 2's or even 0's is RETARDED beyond belief. THIS IS NOT Ride to Hell or Big Rigs; just **** off and go play Call of Duty or some **** And yeah, I might be a hypocrite for doing the exact opposite, but really, I don't give a **** what you think :)

After playing the single player campaign I have to say that it's been a long time since I had that ''classic FPS'' feel, I wouldn't say it's a pure Doom sequel though, because it borrows elements from other classic shooters as well (you decide which ones those are), with just a few more modern features like upgrades and runes. The graphics look amazing (even if my hardware is below the recommended requirements, I was able to play on high with very few slowdowns), the pace is just right and the gore is simply orgasmic! (I can see that they've been watching Brutal Doom haha).

This Doom proves to me that you CAN succesfully combine classic and modern elements into a pure FPS, and after the disappointment that was Duke Nukem Forever, I'm VERY happy about that.

Conclusion: A straightforward, no bull**** and fast-paced arcade shooting experience worth checking out for yourself! (this goes for the single player only, haven't played any multiplayer yet)

Some of the music is actually note for note the same as in the original series except with modernized instrumentation. It's just fantastic all around. Being a 34 year old it's harder for me to get into games like I once did. I usually will boot up a game for a few minutes and get bored. Not this game, I can't wait to get back in and slay some demons. I'm sure when I complete it I will go back and try on Ultra Nightmare.

The gameplay on the surface may seem repetitive but due to the new weapons, upgrades and monsters being introduced with a perfect pace the combat always feels fresh.

The weakest point in this amazing game would have to be the multiplayer.
But on it’s own the multiplayer feels amazing and fun it just doesn't live up to the legacy of ID multiplayer.

The plot is thin, and so it should be, after all you're just here to fight like hell.

MP mode is fun and again kept to its roots old school PC players would know and love. Freeze Tag being a completely new type of FPS game mode I've seen on console and so much fun! although a want for more maps in the base pack would of been nice. DLC inbound.

They don't tend to make half-baked games and when I saw the gloriously gruesome reveal footage for it, I pre-ordered it on Steam almost straight away!

Let's cut to the bit that you'll be wanting to read: I’m pleased to say that the new DOOM is utterly, utterly outstanding. It plays somewhat like the original game, but it’s been brought bang up to date and feels like it’s been to the gym and pumped up on steroids and it’s refreshing to see that Id Software have eschewed the usual route of using cut-scenes in the new DOOM - it just drops you right in the action without so much as an introduction and the story (what there is of it) unfolds as you play the game.

All of the demonic foes from the originals are present and correct have been brought up to date and imbued with new abilities. The lowly imps that used to simply be bullet fodder, for example, are now cunning little buggers that constantly leap around and try to flank or get behind you at every opportunity – they also try to get up to high ground so that they can sling fireballs at you from above. Thankfully, you have that classic arsenal of weapons at your disposal, all of which are fun to use and have some superb new abilities – and can I hear a ‘Hell Yeah’ for the return of the double-barrelled super-shotgun from Doom2? Everything from the pistol all the way through to the BFG are upgradable via weapon tokens that can be picked up after killing waves of enemies or completing special challenges, and these upgrades unlock each weapon’s secondary fire mode which are useful when dealing with the bigger and tougher demons later in the game. There are two upgrades per weapon which, once selected, reveal branches of additional upgrades that can be unlocked to increase the weapon’s power and efficiency. It’s not just the weapons that are upgradable either – your suit can be beefed up to make you tougher, stronger and faster and there are options to increase your health, armour and ammo capacity – so the potential to customise your weapons and abilities to your liking should significantly increase the game’s replay value.

The original DOOM games were famously gruesome, and it should come as no surprise that the new game is breathtakingly, grimace-inducing and absurdly ultraviolent! You can choose the normal route of turning your demonic foes into a red smoosh by blasting them at point-blank range or you can soften them with a couple of blasts and look out for them stumbling around with a blue glow around them, which means that you can use the new ‘glory kill’ ability on them. This is basically a quick close-range execution move which in some cases must be performed to dispose of the tougher enemies, particularly if you’ve ran out of ammo and are shooting at them with the pistol. Rather usefully, performing a glory kill also causes them to drop medipacks and a small amount of ammo, so you’ll find yourself doing them frequently to keep your health topped up. If you run out of ammo however, you’ll find yourself whipping out the good old chainsaw and it’s of course the case that when using this that you’ll see the game’s most gruesome sights as you literally cut them in half! It’s not just violence for violence’s sake however as chainsaw kills cause lots of ammo to be dropped, so you’ll find yourself using it fairly often.

It would be unfair not to mention DOOM’s visuals as they are absolutely spectacular. I’ve found myself gawping about at the surroundings, particularly in the outdoor areas of Mars and (not really a spoiler) when I’ve been in Hell as they’re absolutely stunning to behold – the lighting, particle and shadow effects are in some cases mind-blowingly cool. It does however help that I’ve got a machine that’s capable of playing the game at ‘Ultra’, so things do really look very nice indeed – but it should look great even if you’ve got a slightly older machine and have to dial the settings down a little.

Special mention also needs to go to the sound and particularly the music in DOOM as if you’re a lover of Metal, you’re going to find the soundtrack very enjoyable indeed. It’s very broody and almost sounds like Nine Inch Nails in the quieter bits, but when you’re getting attacked from all sides by demons, it whips up into a full on industrial metal riff-fest and I’ve seriously found myself gently moshing while playing! It’s seriously good and adds another level of brilliance to the game.

Summing up, I think that Id Software have seriously outdone themselves here and have delivered a game the exceeded my expectations by some degree. It’s fun, loud, brutal and brash and deserves your attention!

The implementation of equipment is second to none, and can save your arse when used at the right moment.

This is, by far, the best (and most fun) game i've played this year, and the best FPS i've played in probably the past 5.

You have to be constantly mindful of your placement, movement during combat. Over the course of video game history there are a few particular games which have altered the course of video games as a medium. In terms of first-person shooters, those games are limited in number. The original Doom introduced the world to fast-paced carnage in the form of interactive media. Doom 2 introduced the world to multiplayer in 1994. Then over the course of the next four years the genre more or less stagnated with very minimal innovation between titles, save for some admittedly big graphical improvements. In 1998 Half Life 1 was released which revolutionized AI in video games as a whole. Enemies ran and took cover from grenades and cockroaches scattered to the corners of the room when you shined your flashlight on them. Then Half Life 2 introduced a real-time physics engine in 2004 and utilized that as a gameplay mechanic. AI was even more advanced and for the first time, it felt like the game was playing back. Not to mention, the Half Life series hugely innovated in the way of story-telling in video games. The final big innovation came with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, when Activision nailed their multiplayer model. Since then, nearly every single first person shooter has sort of mimicked the Call of Duty franchise in order to draw sales. Modern Warfare released in 2007.

In other words, there hasn't really been any huge innovation in the first-person shooter genre in almost a decade. Sure, there were others along the way that improved on the model (namely, the Bioshock series) and yes, Wolfenstein was *great*. But this is the first time in a very, very long time that I have played a first person shooter and felt like I was getting an utterly unique experience. DOOM is so far from today's norm that it feels almost alien, even though many old school FPS fans started with DOOM.

There are bosses, secrets, upgrades, gruesome finishers, awesome enemies, a kickass soundtrack and most importantly, classic fast-paced oldschool DOOM™ carnage. There is no cover. There are no iron sights. Health does not regenerate. Reflexes separate the winners from the losers. You win by reacting, not thinking. Its **** refreshing.

10/10 Best FPS in a decade

Also acceptable to just run it in the background as you mosh.

PS: For those of you interested in multiplayer, DOOM is a *heavily* singleplayer-focused game. The multiplayer is not as good as the singleplayer. The multiplayer is decent though, and feels a LOT like unreal tournament. In other words, its oldschool DOOM multiplayer. Don't expect CoD multiplayer, its not that. It is fun for a bit though. And it doesn't feel slapped on, there is plenty of content and customization options (there are like hundreds of taunt animations, its insane). SnapMap is also cool if you're interested in making you're own maps.

Doom is such a treat. It's a high octane first person shooter that ditches a lot of the trappings of its genre. Despite its higher production values and polished looks, this is a new DOOM. There is no regenerating health or cover. There is only you, the Doom guy and the countless hordes of demons that are soon to be fodder for your arsenal. You kill your first demon in the first few seconds of the game and by the time a half an hour has past, you have shot, punched and kicked several denizens of hell into a bloody pulp.

Doom's gameplay has a satisfying loop. Killing demons itself is fun. But the way you kill them is just as important. You can perform a variety of glory kills. These glory kills are vital in that they drop ammo and health that you need so you can ...you guessed it, kill more demons. When your an inch from death, it's incredibly satisfying to tear into a demon with a chainsaw and watch the much needed health and ammo you need pop out like a gore covered pinata.

DOOM's story is fairly simple and straight forward. But it doesn't have to be anything more than that. It gives you context for your actions and doesn't overstay its welcome allowing you to get back to the action.

Then along the way people wanted to throw stealth in my action games, puzzles in my shooters and lockpicking mini games in my adventure games.

Now I'm not against making gameplay more dynamic, and giving the player multiple options to solve a scenario is a good thing overall. Letting the player explore there own options and carry their game out how they want is a big strength a game CAN have. But too many games these days thrown in segments for the sake of it when it's not necessary, when it doesn't serve the narrative or when the stealth isn't done well and it's just there because.

DOOM is a throwback and a love letter to when games were simpler, more focused and when a FPS was just about killing a lot of **** The gameplay is simple and perfected, you have big guns and you kill demons. The maps give you the right amount of exploration, so there are secrets and hidden goals to find, but you can easily ignore those and just go from point A to point B killing every demon in sight. Thiss is the goal of the game, the story serves a purpose to drive the game forward but never feels like a major focus and does exactly what it needs to.

You get around 10 weapons total by the games end and most are upgrade able with 2 different mods for each gun that give it a special ability. This gives you enough freedom to define your playstyle without giving you so many options you start to wonder about "optimal builds". No nothing you upgrade can go wrong, you can always max out your other guns and you're never going to be crippled by picking one path over another, just go in and have fun. Even on the highest available difficulty before unlocking more after completion, the game is challenging without being infuriating. And dying just gives you another chance to go back and fight those demons again.

I don't think I can recommend a game more highly this year than DOOM. As a game it's flawless and succeeds at everything it tries to be good at.

It's super fun and, while it's hardcore, you don't feel like a victim here, because of atmosphere the game creates. Conversely your enemies are the ones who should fear as a protagonist is a brutal hard person which wants to destroy all evil and nothing else. The game is not easy, you just get this feeling while playing it and it's good.

The gameplay is excellent and pros compensate cons of the game.
    The bad things are:
    - No GPS. Adding it would definitely make the game even better. Its absense quite often forces you to go here and there in a search of the right way. It's not hard to find, but simply wastes some of your time. It's a perfect shooter, so making this particular aspect of the game a bit more friendly to the player would have been nice of devs.
    - No manual saves. Saves/loads/checkpoints are also unfriendly to the player.
    - Some bugs still in 2017/2018. F.e., a critical one - finishing opponents sometimes makes you stuck in textures.
    - More than 50% of weapon and armor upgrades are inappreciable.
It also would have been nice if there were more different weapons and bosses in the game. And of course single player compaign could have been longer than it is right now. No replayability when you finish the game on normal difficulty.

But, as written above it's still a perfect pure FPS: perfect shooter gameplay, excellent soundtrack, nice graphics, optimisation and the story doesn't distract you from killing everything in sight, but also keeps you going on.

The gameplay is just a hurricane of meat, blood and explosions. Good old gun with modifications, brutal fatalities, double jumps, testing, improving, finding secrets, demons! Not a second of standing still, always in motion, and if you stop even for a second, you're dead. In between battles, you want to get back into the battle. And Pro bosses, too, not forgotten, they have become more, stronger, steep.

John Carmack has already told the story. Characters little, but all are remembered. There is a Russian voice, but very little talk, which is why everything sounds great and without falsehood. Executioner Rock here, of course, the coolest, he also spat on the plot, he just wants to kill all the demons and stop the invasion. The plot promised to bring in Eternal.

The graphics are gorgeous, eyes are happy. On ultra play a pleasure! The design of the demons as great. Locations are not so much, but Hell looks very beautiful.

The music here sounds amazing! Fits perfectly into the gameplay. To kill the demons under a sheet the best I could come up with!

The atmosphere is very pleasant. Secrets are scattered everywhere, classic maps from the original. And in General to sources treated very respectfully. Some landscapes are worthy of a screenshot. The peak of the slope starts just in time for the battle with the demons, when everything explodes, a sea of blood, it is a pity all the dead demons don't stay in the place of his death.

This is the best game I've ever played! By far the best remake, best shooter, best main character, best fight demons! The second part is close, it remains only to wait.

    Forever in my heart! 10/10

The gameplay is fast and brutally demanding, requiring good accuracy while running without ever stopping your killing spree. Combat is incredible, fluid and with good AI, really fun! There is a great variety of weapons which you might use on your quest to turn every demon on Mars and Hell into a fine red mist. There is no dialogue (only monologues), which could only slow down the pace, so if you play just for the story, sorry, this won't be a game for you. There is no aiming down sights, which would be as useful as GTA's traffic lights, as almost every demon runs around and jumps like they are on cocaine. This game will reward for going as fast as possible and letting out your anger on computer generated demons by brutally killing them (which will give you more health and sometimes ammo) which will burn your virgin eyes out (that is until you get a berserk power-up (it basically enables you to go even further and kill everything within the reach of your stubby arms into grinded flesh in one hit), causing your eves explode. Levels are incredibly linear, which makes game even better, as you never have to stop your genocide spree (call PETA - demons have rights too!). Still, there are a lot of secrets, which are even harder to find, as linear level design and the environment will make it much harder to find. Lastly, the game is incredibly well optimised, with loading only between levels and I was amazed, as I didn't expect my GTX 970 to go much further than high settings and 50 fps, but it ended up running at 60 fps on ultra settings. Just for that I'd give the game 9/11!

You will be fighting in the first 10 seconds of the game. Combat is challenging and very fluid with emphasis on speed, which they've certainly cranked up. Stopping is death on nightmare. Glory kills are satisfying, can be a ammo saver, and really don't hinder game flow at all, and can even be upgraded to perform faster (or toggled off in the options).

Level design is absolutely impressive. This was my biggest concern with Doom, and rest assured id FINALLY did it right. Non-linear, lots of exploration, plenty of secrets with hidden guns, secret level unlocks, and equipment.

The monsters are relentless. On nightmare you will get your♥♥♥♥♥kicked. This is a fact, and there's no way to circumvent this. I honestly felt at times that I was playing Project Brutality on "Last Man on Earth" difficulty. Monsters boast a variety of attacks, chase you down, flank you, and can be tough as nails (sometimes a little too good).

Weapons look and feel satisfying, great attention to detail. You will use guns interchangeably, each has their respective uses. You'll have to search the environment for health and ammo, aside from the chainsaw kills on enemies, they drop little items- but enough to keep you going (i.e +5 health occasionaly or like 4 shotgun shells). The BFG literally clears an entire room in one shot, and I couldn't help but smile at the results. Upgrades and progression in this game are entirely optional, but really help shift the game to fit how you play (the air control ability is the best imo).

The graphics are incredible too, although you better have a strong card if you want to play on Ultra with anti-aliasing, etc. Uncapping framerate, setting your FOV to 130, tons of options to customize.

And I have to say, Mick Gordon's soundtrack in this game is some of the best I've heard in a while. On the third level, I was literally head banging and rocking out to a soundtrack that felt like a crossbreed between Lamb of God, Celldweller, and Rage Against the Machine.

Overall, I can confidently say that this is the Doom game we've wanted. We all can breath a sigh of relief now that the main portion of the game is actually well-done. That beta we played is absolutely no indicator of how the campaign plays in the slightest, and id did it right with this one. Definitely recommend this title as a gamer, a die hard Doom fan (still play the classic to this day), and FPS fanatic.

EDIT: Since some of you do not take the time to actually explore the game's options and like to jump to conclusions, you can in fact start the game on nightmare. Ultra-nightmare is unlocked after beating the game, NOT regular nightmare. Fact.

Doom has got to be my favourite game of the decade.
It has everything that makes the franchise so good : a fast (even though slower than the 90's iterations) pace, loads of guns, gore and demons, complimented by Mick Gordon's incredible soundtrack.
Sure, the multiplayer feels a bit off, when compared to the standards set by Quake 3, but good lord it was so much better than any other

Sure, the multiplayer feels a bit off, when compared to the standards set by Quake 3, but good lord it was so much better than any other deathmatch multiplayer I have played since basically, well, Quake 3.

There are a few things that bothered me (three unskippable cutscenes with Samuel Hayden), but the game is incredible fun, amazing graphics and level design, and runs especially well, even on the oldest junk I could find.

10/10, i'll keep replaying again and again.

Meaty multiplayer and a campaign that plays like a sustained electric shock. Eye wateringly fun. [July 2016, p.60]

If you miss Doom, you miss what I anticipate to be one of two most important first person shooters of 2016. The classic returns in great shape, with all its vital elements intact. Give the campaign some time to pick up speed and it will pump your veins full of adrenaline. [07/2016, p.38]

A tribute to Doom that leaps to great heights, but fails to fully stick the landing. [Issue#252, p.60]
