Loved Doom 2016 (400+ hours of playtime since autumn last year - yes, I started kind of late), loving this one even more. Everything (gameplay, production values, atmosphere) is top notch apart from the story which could have been better executed (think Bioshock series). One of the best shooters I've ever played.

Best level design I've seen in a game since Halo: CE. Held a solid 144+ 1080p the entire game without a single dip, running on a 2080 but have a fairly outdated CPU. Only real complaint is the Maruaders don't feel fair on higher difficulties. Expand

This game is Great, For me it makes doom 2016 look basic. I played this on ultra violence and it was HARD but it was just endless fun. some of the platforming can be a dumb but after a few goes you get there. It's almost flawless but this game is just DOOM with a GOD DAMN GRAPPLING HOOK!

I really don't get people giving this game a 0. DE is what a shooter should be; liquid fast, intense, with beautiful graphics. The games uses every ounce of your systems computing power to deliver an incredible, sweat-inducing experience. My only issue is the lack of multiplayer. It's what other shooters can NEVER be.

It feel amazing learning the Myth of the Doom Guy or Doom Slayer.

Love it and i cant wait for the DLC to keep digging on the Doom Lore.

A technical masterpiece, the new IDTech Engine 7 is incredible. I didn't encounter a single stutter, hitch or major frame rate drop during my entire playthrough, it runs insanely well for how good it looks.

As with Doom 2016, the gameplay is fast and fun, but a little bit different this time around, with the melee ability being next to worthless, but instead chainsaw ammo replenishes over time up to 1 bar and the ammo for it is more plentiful than 2016. This is important because ammo is extremely scarce, possible too scarce so you will often need to chainsaw fodder enemies to regain some ammo. The main new gameplay mechanic is wall climbing where you can latch onto walls, this is used a lot throughout the game, too much in my opinion, there is a ton of parkour in Doom Eternal. Swimming is also a thing now, for some reason, it’s not needed in Doom but thankfully it’s used sparingly.

The music is on point as you’d expect from a Doom game, with heavy metal pumping from start to finish, as well as fantastic audio in general.

Overall the game is a ton of fun with a few downsides, and one awful mission in particular, but even still it’s impressively well made and hard to put down.

It is, on all accounts, unapologetically a video game and oozes character. It is incredibly fast, fluid, brutal and has a high learning curve whose payoff keeps urging you to go back in and try as many times as it takes to master it. Becoming familiar with Eternal's surprisingly wide range of tools, abilities and arsenal may seem daunting at first, but listening to what the game is trying to tell you will inevitably lead you down the path of becoming the ultimate Slayer and having one of the most robust power fantasies a video game can offer.

The storytelling is simplistic and never takes itself too seriously, it's all very tongue-in-cheek and mostly serves the purpose of making you feel powerful and entertained. All of the lore in the codex is very interesting to read and paints a poetic picture of Hell, demons, sentinels, angels, gods, etc. It all feels like straight out of a comic book.

The art style and visuals are simply stunning and inspired. Everything from the environment variety, enemy designs, weapons designs and overall visual flair looks and feels very nostalgic and full of character.

The new engine is something to behold. The amount of detail and chaos that can be present on screen at times is simply staggering especially given how well this game runs on most machines. It inevitably has to, since FPS is what matters most in such a fast-paced FPS...
The amount of split second decision making and precision required is what calls for as smooth of an experience as possible and id Tech 7 delivers more than anyone could have hoped for.

The game loop itself is made deeper and more diverse with the inclusion of resource management and expanded movement mechanics. Playing a typical combat loop really does feel like a form of "speed-chess", in which you have to always be considering what pieces are on the board and using the appropriate tools in response for the most efficient demon slaying. Once you get into the habit of glory-killing for health, burning for armor and chainsawing for ammo, it all starts to come together into a coherent frenzy of destruction since the one and only way you manage those resources is by brutally ripping and tearing your foes out of existence. The dash ability, monkey bar swings and wall climbing have all contributed to diversifying the experience further and adding some much needed variety and verticality to the level design as well as making you feel more in control of the combat (once you master it). Numerous platforming sections throughout the game break up the combat and are pretty fun in my opinion. Due to the game's fluidity, this has got to be some of the best platforming ever put into an FPS game, although it might not be your style.

The plethora of exploration, collectibles, secrets and challenges will give you plenty to do well after you've completed the campaign and the game still has more to offer on top of that in the form of Master Levels (levels you've already beaten but with new and more plentiful enemy placements), and the game's brand new multiplayer mode: Battlemode -which is arguably the game's weakest link as of right this moment.

Battlemode pits 1 Slayer against 2 player-controlled demons in an arena battle in which either side must get a best-of-5. The Slayer must rely on his skills and aggression in order to succeed while the demons must utilize strategy in order to corral the Slayer. It's still pretty early to judge whether this mode is balanced at all, although I can say that where it lacks fidelity is in some of the animation, effects work and, most notably, lag. It doesn't feel quite as precise as it should, although it is a neat concept that simply lacks some refinement and content.
Although Battlemode is interesting, it might not be enough alone to sustain the game's longevity. Luckily, id Software have already committed to releasing at least 4 paid campaign DLC's and will soon be adding a new Dark Souls-esque invasion mode to the campaign for free. That, new Master Levels and Battlemode content will all be releasing for free as well.

On top of all of this, id has managed to include an non-paid sort of battle pass system, which rewards various cosmetics upon earning XP and leveling up. There are no strings attached to this, it is all earnable by simply playing the game. No microtransactions whatsoever (don't even think about it Bethesda).

I cannot say enough about Mick Gordon's new soundtrack. It all sounds like a more refined version of what he did for DOOM 2016, with some added variety. It's more atmospheric and distinct while still retaining that brutal, metal quality. I can think of at least several specific tracks right off the top of my head, unlike 2016 where I can only remember BFG Division and Rip and Tear. Great stuff.

DOOM Eternal is worth its price and the most brutal fun you can have in a video game.

Then, there's the people who are just bad at the game, complaining about difficulty (while playing on Ultra-Violence or Nightmare), the people complaining about the low amount of ammo but not using their chainsaw, and the people complaining about the platforming. Now, the ones complaining about the platforming don't realize that the game needs something in between the arenas. You can't just have empty areas in between them, or just arena after arena after arena, with nothing in between. Personally, I found them really fun. Anyway, my point is, the people who complain about this game really have no point or arguments that make sense or can't be fixed by altering their own game-play. Summary: Doom is back and this entry is an absolute work of art. Love that there's finally another Doom that takes place on earth and the art style really benefits from it. That may turn some newcomers off (that's why it's not a 10/10) but it's personally exactly what I was looking for in a sequel.

Needing the Bethesda account does stink, but I think it's also a bit overblown. You give them your username/email on the first startup then you never have to aknowledge it again. I don't like that it's *required* but it's nowhere near worth review bombing a game for.

It was shoot this guy with whatever you want then move to the next one and so on. Doom Eternal's enemies each have weak points, more effective weapons against them, and you have a more diverse arsenal. ( i.e. types of grenades, flamethrower which releases armor from enemies, grappling hook in the super shotgun) All of this makes for a gameplay which forces you to THINK. And this part is very important. I even saw an interview in which Hugo Martin said this, and i didnt understand what he meant. Unlike Doom 2016 this game makes you decide at every moment what to use, because each enemy and situation requires a different weapon or part of your arsenal and that makes the gameplay entertaining and engaging. You cant go using the same weapon the whole game and expect to survive.

This game really is something special, and if you are a gamer who likes to try the latest innovation in the genre do yourself a favor and buy this game.

And to all the people complaining about limited ammo : You need to be strategic about it. You need to farm demons using the chainsaw and conserve ammunition by using abilities like blood punch and the ice/frag grenades. Not to mention you can also upgrade your ammo capacity.

All though it gets on my nerves sometimes, it is a breath of fresh air. A lot of games will try to sell you the same game you bought a few years ago but this time add a new story. No new gameplay or anything. This game goes against that. Id and Bethesda know they can’t depend on the new graphics to sell this game. That is why they added so many new features. On a technical side of things the game runs perfect. Once I updated my drivers I feel no lag or anything. Before the update I felt a slight lag here and there nothing bad what so ever. The multiplayer is fun, though I wish they would have just added in more modes. They most certainly will. In time. For now though if you are looking for an amazing shooter game this is it. This is the one you were looking for. 10/10 for me. Expand

There are some un"Doom-like" things in it. The previous game gave the player the ability to jump w/ double jump later, and climbing ledges (quickly, at that). The previous game gave the player the ability to jump w/ double jump later, and climbing ledges (quickly, at that). I think that was the right amount of movement for Doomguy. This one adds a dash that can be used twice including in the air, "monkey bars" which let the player jump again off then, a hook-shot on your super shotgun, and wall climbing - very quickly at that, and you can jump off the walls. I don't really like these. Especially when the game becomes very platformy, and it's not always good at that. Sometimes it's not clear where you're supposed to go next (even with this game continuing the previous game's "go green" color cues). And sometimes you just don't make the jumps regardless. For example, you are supposed to use your melee on the climbable walls to latch on. I cannot tell you how many times Doomguy punched the climbable wall and then fell down it. Sigh. There's also a fair bit of fantasy-inspired lore in the game. Some parts of the game feel more like Quake than Doom (and I'm not the biggest fan of Quake). Whereas the previous game, your character did not care about plot, this game is rich with it. Oh they set some of the stuff for this game up last time, and now they were delivering as if they had to pack the plot left from the previous game into this as well. And, of course, there are bugs. There's at least one soft lock I found, and several other things that just don't work right.

None of that is to say this game isn't entertaining. It's extremely fun to play. Overall, I am very happy with it. I just wanted to get the negatives out of the way first. There's plenty of positives. They really did a good job tying the previous games in, and not just in spirit. Yes, you have the classic outfit you can unlock. There's a reason for that. Your character, "Doomguy" as he is also referred to in the game, really is the marine that was sent to the moons of Mars to deal with UAC's portal mess. And he really did lose his god damned mind and go back INTO Hell to kill every last demon he could find. And then he was adopted by an ancient order to continue the work, only going so far that even they couldn't really control what they had unleashed. It's great, it fits perfectly. They've thrown a lot of things for the fans, including calling him "Doomguy" at several times, and even having a painting of the slayer holding Daisy - his pet rabbit that was seen at the end of the first Doom, and the expanded version. A lot of the collectibles come in the form of music tracks from the series (all the way back to Commander Keen. The game also has cheat codes that you can use when replaying levels, and the best part is those cheat codes don't actually turn off the progression for the levels, so you can find the missing items etc. in them (except for the challenge gates). They added a fast travel system when you're almost done with a level, just in case you don't want to replay it to go back and pick up what you missed. There's master levels as well, remixed versions that are designed to be more challenging.

The boss fights are a mixed bag. Some are more annoying than not, but some were a lot of fun to go through. Just as the first game, the first boss comes back as a common enemy throughout. The boss fight where you have to use your hook-shot to punch the flying boss was a real treat, not just for that aspect but the arena as a whole was a lot of fun to play in. The Marauder, that becomes a normal enemy as well, less so. This is an enemy that keeps a shield up and forces you to wait and counter his attacks. Something that doesn't seem to fit at all in the series that has focused on just keep shooting since the beginning. Another let-down is enemies no longer drop ammo unless you chainsaw them (which does at least refill automatically - at least to one pip). This means you will find yourself running out and being forced to switch weapons frequently. Fortunately, I really like most of the weapons in this one. Most. We have a poor substitute to the over-powered Siege Cannon this time out.

I've not done the multiplayer yet, but it's the "two demons vs one Doomslayer" game mode, that's it. I am fully planning on giving that a shot. The game did come with the ability to unlock and play the first two games in game (now that they added the .wad files for it... whoops), but they used the more draconian BFG censorship - and without even the bonus levels.

Yea, I really, REALLY liked this game. I'm glad I have it. I just hope they fix some of the bugs.

The good thing is the music, the gameplay, the story is quite cool and the cutscenes are very well made, I like the fact you can customize your guns and the armor of doomguy, the weapons feels more powerful and very cool looking, you can now dash, the game feels more fastpast, it is brutal, boss fights are no joke in higher difficulty, the game is hard and they don't hold back when it comes to horde of monsters, the level design is amazing but they are a bit too long for my taste but still they are fun to play. There are more platforming, at times you feel like you are playing a Mario game jumping on all kinds of obstacles, I still enjoy it but to some it can be a game breaker if they are not good at it.

Anyway it is a very good game, I rate at 9 but my score might either go up or down, I played quite a bit and I believe I am in the middle of the game and I am having a blast playing on Ultra-Violence. I just hope Bethesda won't screw this up since they are the experts when it comes to that.

This game is an improvement over DOOM 2016 in just about every way imaginable. If you don't like a more "videogamey" aesthatic with bright colours for pick ups and all that, then I guess the presention isn't gonna be your cup of tea. But everything else is just so much better, if you're up for the challenge. This time you actually have to manage your ammo and pay attention to how you kill your enemies to get what you need (Health, Armor or Ammo). It seems like this is what some people take issue with and if you like your games mindless then I guess there's nothing for you here. You defintely have to think about what you're doing and stay on your toes. I remember I almost never used the chainsaw in DOOM 2016 because there was plenty of ammo to go around. In Eternal it's absolutely necessary and I end up using it in pretty much every encounter. In general you'll end up using everything at your disposal. Not because you ran out of ammo on your favourite weapon but because it's mandatory if you want to stay alive. There really is a weapon (and weapon mod) for every situation and you'll constantly be switching between them.

Also the environments are very varied and look great! In DOOM 2016 everything looked pretty samey. Not here.

I really can't praise this game enough but I don't want to spend all day writing this review. The main takeaway is that it's designed in a way that forces you to use everything at your disposal if you want to survive, much moreso than DOOM 2016, regardless of difficulty mode. (I'm playing on Ultra-Violence) This makes the whole experience extremely engaging. There's not a single thing I can think of that's a downgrade over its predecessor. And the only downside in general imo is that they kept the mission challenges. I'm just not a fan of these kinds of artificial challenges but I know I'm in the minority there and it's not a huge deal anyway.

Just don't get the physical copy like I did. Otherwise you'll have to deal with Bethesda's awful Launcher and all the headaches that come with that. Buy it on steam. :)

Everything I wanted after Doom 2016, amazing, god-like pure gold video game. I get that some people are upset because it's different to Doom 2016 and they hate the lack of ammo but honestly just give the game a chance to make you play the way it was designed to make you play and you'll see how amazing it is once it's full potential is unleashed.
Time to Rip n Tear Slayers and Slayerettes!!

An almost complete evolution of Doom 2016; this is the fastest, most furious shooter that I have ever played and it's not all reflexes and quick-scoping.

There's a method to the madness here that rewards intelligence, but it's not for the faint of heart. There's even a story and extra lore to find if you care, and the writing is gloriously cheesy. This is perhaps the most violent game

There's even a story and extra lore to find if you care, and the writing is gloriously cheesy.

This is perhaps the most violent game ever created, if not for the horrible wounds you will inflict upon your hapless foes, then it is the frightening intensity of their occurrence.

There's platforming and exploration too, and this feels not unlike the more serene Metroid Prime; mostly due to the platforms and the viewpoint. While the platforming occasionally has some issues, Eternal would feel a lot more empty without it. There are some cutscenses that take the Zelda approach, wrestling the camera from you after combat to show you where to go next, which can be a little jarring, but they serve a purpose as the environments tend to have a few more paths and it can be easy to get lost in a new location after a tense battle.

Some of the puzzles are a little frustrating, but they work well enough and some are actually pretty clever.

Overall, I think Eternal is definitely a step up from the previous title, but it won't be for everyone; especially those who prefer a more spartan gameplay loop.

The weapons, demons, and resource management makes it significantly different. You need to get used to how the weapons function against various enemies and situations. They aren't the same. There are people complaining about the ammo situation. They aren't getting it. Resource management is a core part of the combat game loop now. We have known that for over a year. These people weren't paying attention to all the information that id put out there. They made it very clear. No one should be surprised by this.

For example, in 2016 the chainsaw was an "oh ****" button that you pulled out when you ran out of ammo unexpectedly or if you needed the insta-kill. In Doom Eternal it is integral to the combat. Glory kills, flame belch, and chainsaw are all now equally important in the heat of battle as the actual weapons are. Ammo, health and armor packs throughout a level are sparse compared to 2016. You need to get the bulk of your resources from the enemies. Incorporate it into your combat play style just like you do when choosing the right weapon at the right time in the middle of combat. It's just another tool in the Doom combat tool chest.

Also, for those complaining about the colors; The game isn't colorful the way it is because they wanted "oooh, shiny". It is there because they have a tsunami of information to communicate to you when all hell is breaking loose (pun intended). If you don't like the HUD colors, you can change the colors in the settings to either a different palette, or make it all a single color. Pretty ironic with all the people **** about the colors when back in the day, it was often joked that id Software games were nothing but brown. People gotta complain about something I guess

If you liked DOOM2016 (or any shooter for that matter) you should try it. In my opinion this is the most complete arcade shooter ever and delivers a challenging and engaging experience with extremely good graphics. 10/10 must play.
Tipp: if it's your first DOOM you might wanna play on the first 2 difficulties for the first run, because oh boi it can be really hard on the higher ones.

Chainsawing refills ammo and as long as you remember to chainsaw fodder demons regularly it's fine. It would be better though I think if the chainsaw animation was faster. I also found that I also needed time to get used to the platforming and using the map, maybe that's because this is my first DOOM game, though.

Graphics and performance are solid, which is great. A lot of triple A games being released that run like **** but not this one. Story is serviceable and I found myself spending a lot of time reading the lore entries. Music is also great overall. Environments and map layouts are diverse and fairly intricate. Enemy types are interesting as well. The interplay between the arsenal and the weaknesses and strengths of the different enemy types works well.

When you know how the system works and things are flowing, it can be a very fun experience. I personally feel like I would've appreciated it being even faster and more over-the-top than it already is in terms of just being a demon-slaying badass, but it does a good job as is.

    - There is a high variety of well made enemies which all have their own behaviour and weakpoints

    - Finding skins ingame instead of buing them as overpriced microtransactions in the year 2020 whut?

    - Many new abilities and dank gadgets like shotgun-grappling hook, shoulder mounted grenade launcher, monkeybars, dash refill item, weaponmodifications and runes to upgrade your passive stats, which really enrich the gameplay and make the pacing a lot faster.

    CONS:

    Most bossfights are boring:

Selfexplanetory. There are a few good ones, but most of them are just way to easy and really not worth your time. Nothing compared to the epic hour long raid bosses in destiny 2. I know its kind of hard to make good boss fights in a single player first person shooter. It's not as easy as in third person games like the souls games, where you can better judge the distance of attacks.

But still they could have made them at least a little bit longer and more challenging.

To many tutorial levels at the beginning of the game:

The first 3 levels feel completely like tutorial levels, with a pacing very different to the rest of the game.Having one tutorial level is ok, but three after each other is kind of overkill. The real game begins at the 4th level.

You can't find your own playstyle:

You have to play the game 100 % as from the devs intended. It's completely build around the glory kill and chainsaw take town mechanics. Because that's how you get most of your health and ammo back.

If you don't like getting locked into takedown animations which you have to perform over and over again, 100th of times during the game, then you are out of luck.

Many normal weapons feel super weak, because they aren't supposed to kill the enemy demons, they are supposed to put them into a staggering state out of which you can then either chainsaw them for gaining ammo or glory kill them for gaining health.

Other shooter are 100% about aiming skill and quickscoping enemies with headshots. This game is rather 25% quickscoping weak points of enemies so that they lose their mounted weaponry and get less dangerous, 25 % prioritizing which enemy to quickscope next while a horde of smaller enemies is chasing after you, 25 % resource and cooldown management and 25 % performing glory kills and chainsaw moves.

They have build this whole resource and cooldown management minigame which you have to play and respect or you run out of ammo and health very quickly. This system can be very fun and rewarding, but only if you have no issue with doing the same takedown animations over and over for the entire game.

So if you really love finishing enemies off with headshots, then this is for sure not the right game for you. You can headshot the weaker demons with mostly 1 of the 2 sniper rifles in game, but they don't even give you a rewarding headshot sounds for that. And all the other demons are just way to tanky and even if you manage to shoot them into their staggering state, even then you can't finish them off with headshots, because they seem to have some super armor or invincibility frames during their staggering phase, because the game really really wants you to finish them mostly with the takedowns and nothing else.

I understand what they are trying to do with it and for the most part it pays of, but i really would have wished, they would at least have given you the option to either glory kill or headshot the demons for ammo during their stagger phase. So that the people who do not like doing so many takedown animations would have had an option.

Yes you can speed the animations up a little bit by equipping some rune which boosts your takedown speed, but even then the chainsaw animations still takes forever.

    CONCLUTION:

The game is a solid 8/10 but could have been easily a 9/10 if they would have given you an option to play without that heavy use of takedown animations in a shooter and made the bosses more dank.

But still a very good game which is made with a lot of love and a good eye for detail and a desire for gameplay refinement. Publisher plz hire more devs like those here.

Doom Eternal is a breath of Fresh air to the franchise and while some smaller areas could use some work in order to get around a bit better i'd say over all this is far more adrenaline inducing and down right badass compared to the earlier iteration in the franchise. The weapon design is stellar as well as the sound design for the weapons. I'd have to say of my 27 years of PC gaming this is by far, the most intense, brutal, first person shooter I've ever played. The gunplay is TIERS above anything else available in the market. Also the story is great, for these people who said the story is bad.. they obviously didn't bother reading any of the codex as there is a lot of tie in to whats going on in those entries. Can't please everyone, but I most definitely recommend everyone giving this a try if you like fast paced, truely challenging and engaging gameplay with an absolutely breath taking set of visuals that sweep across countless different biomes and environments.

Graphics are Outstanding, weapons have been re-made and all of them look better then in 2016 in my opinion, specially the Plasma Rifle, god I love that. The background area In some missions is simply out of this world, just look around on the very first mission " Hell on Earth "

Battlemode is ok, I'm afraid it might die in the future tho just like DOOM 2016 Deathmatch.

My only complain is that there is some unnecessary platforming that can be really annoying specially for a DOOM game.

Like Jason Statham’s character in Crank, Doom Eternal needs adrenaline every waking second. So long as you drown hordes of demons in their own blood, it feels like a perfect GOTY contender, but during quiet moments, Doom Eternal withers and forces you to ponder unpleasant questions. id Software needs to course-correct, otherwise we’ll be playing Super Doom Slayer’s Bros in a few years.
