If Nickelback decided to make video games, this is what I would expect. I waited until the season just in case they decided to do a Lloyd spend a decade in a wheelchair and then be like Gotcha! but no.

None of the quality of life features that took years of player interaction to work out have been introduced into this game. Also, the premium battle pass offers in game currency that will give you enough coins to buy... nothing.

I just created my account for telling gamers to be cautious before buying this game
In its current state D4 is very far of diablo like game
no fun (itemization and re-playability) , not a solo game (boss in dungeon are way to hard in level III to play solo)

But it provides indeed beautiful landscapes

    TL;DR:
It's not a diablo game. I mean, there isn't even a diablo in the game!!
It's an exchangeable generic H&S game that could've been done by any indie studio. ok, gfx and audio are great, but the game itself is a horrible misconception. Worst itemization seen in over 10 years (when D3 came out the did the same mistakes, creating wands with +str and dex... just as an example). ---

    ---

I played Diablo from the first version back in the 90's. The best Diablo was D2 in patch 1.09d
When they released 1.10 for D2 it became cruel and hard, but still beatable.
D3 was a horror trip while the auction house existed and the itemization was so awful (dropping wands with str and dex).
D3 became better, although it was reduced to grind portals forever, barely ever leaving a town. but that was still better than what they did to the diablo game with Diablo IV.

First, they REPEATED THE SAME MISTAKES (wands with str+dex) and created an absolutely demotivating itemization. when i return to town after a dungeon i am not eager to find out what cool drops there were, no, i am SCARED to visit the merchant because i now have again to spend 5+ minutes on an inventory full of trash, reading through waaaaay to long tooltips and dozens of different stats and bonusses to find out, whether an item MIGHT oder MIGHT NOT be stronger than what i wear.
Legendaries are a joke. They are just rares with a random aspect slammed on them.

uniques are a joke too as we can't even reroll ANYTHING. why did they not make it, that we can try to get a better roll on one single stat? I mean, not CHANGING what stat it is - uniques shall be blueprints, thats ok, but just try to reroll the value of a single stat? there are dropping so few uniques... it's horrible.

And then... patch 1.1 came just before the season. omg.... my sorceress is dead, unplayable.
    Hell tides make no fun.
Dungeons are just awkward and lightyears away from being fun.
Itemization is not even worth the energy, that the white pixels of this text consumes.
It's a 100% failure. It can clearly be seen, that key players left the company.

Diablo IV was okay before the 1.1.0 patch, after the patch it's hardly fun anymore. It takes ages to level up, your own damage is really bad and you just can't take any more damage. You no longer feel powerful. Main story and graphics are good.

The game was fun... until level 50. Then, it became a grind, grind again and grind some more chore. There are no sets, like in the previous games, and legendaries are -most of the time- just garbage. Uniques drop only in higher difficulties.
Then, Blizzard released patch 1.1.0. and nerfed ALMOST everything player friendly.
Make yourself a favor and don't buy this game.

They basically took Diablo 3 Reskinned it and made it worse. Still cant understand how they just cant see the success from Diablo/Diablo 2 and just build off it.

Leveling 1-45 is OK after level 45 well you have to do the same dungeon 1000000 times to hit ma level 100 which even at that point theres still nothing to do. They said you'll hit lvl 100 and you can now do the same dungeon

The loot system is broken. If your level 50 or level 100, the same loot drops which makes 0 sense.

They keep nerfing every class and making them weaker and the monsters strong as if it will extend the play time of the game since theres NO CONTENT.

The icing on the cake is seasons, which youll be forced to play every 3months as it deletes your character and moves it to an eternal realm server but again scroll above and think is the game really so much fun that you'll want to restart every 3 months???

What a sinking ship Blizzard has turned into.

For context, I played Diablo 2 extensively. I played Diablo 3 and all expansions extensively. And I was a pre-order victim of Diablo 4. I have a level 80 rogue on the enteral realm and a level 25 rogue on Season 1.

The overall game is executed well in that it is mostly performant. I like the switch to a live service model. I also think that the main campaign storyline and cinematics are the best they've been since Diablo 2. This compliments are the best I can give.

Eternal realm characters will run out of meaningful things to do starting around level 70. Many players have acknowledge a "rinse and repeat" formula for endgame and I can absolutely confirm this experience. What was great about the previous games was that while grindy, the hunt for great items made the time spent worth it. I am not sure how this team got loot so wrong, but it's not as rich as previous Diablo games. Arguably, the loot and item system is actually not even as good as Borderlands games, which borrowed heavily from the early Diablo games. It's one of a few things you wouldn't expect the dev and design team to miss. And miss they did. Which begs the question: why am I grinding through dungeons if the the reward system is so bad?

Season 1 only released yesterday and I already have a level 25 Rogue. I'm not sure I'll be coming back to Season 1 after yesterday's binge for the same reason as mentioned above: there isn't enough to do and there isn't enough to motivation to continue. The Malignant Hearts partially compensate for the heavy nerfs from the unpopular patch, but even these lose their new luster pretty quickly, and there are so few of them, and several offer buffs you'd never choose if you had a choice. Again, the loot and reward systems aren't compelling for a game franchise known for creating really fun and viable builds, and the endgame grind is so slow now that unlocking buffs through paragon boards means most of you (and I do mean statistically darn near all of you) reading this will never be able to achieve your build potential before the season ends in October. Even Diablo 3 seasons were better executed than this, which gets to my main criticism...

Diablo 4 lacks innovation and feels thin, chincy, flimsy and neutered as a result -- especially once you reach mid and endgame where the lack of innovation creates a boring "seen this before" experience. There are so many great ideas out there, ones that Blizzard probably considered at various points internally, and would mean so much to the community but also to their monetization and retention strategies. Examples include: the map is underutilized; world events are poorly timed; the commerce system is 20 years old and has somewhere between 3-5 currencies; co-op scaling is silly and has similar issues to the lackluster loot and reward system... I mean, we're talking about a $1B game 8 weeks after launch.

Why does a triple A game still feel like it's working out beta issues? The worse question is: why did they get so much wrong?

    Where to start:
Itemization is terrible and drops have almost no value or hype since 90% of your power comes from aspects which are easily farmable.
Game cc mechanics until death are not fun. Bosses are weak with basic mechanics while you get oneshot by regular mobs. Don't waste money on this, instead buy Baldur's Gate 3 - a game made by real gamers for gamers and not some family

If you want to waste money and time, take this game immediately. There is a chronic server problem and while clearing a long dungeon or fighting against a boss, a mystery server problem kicks you out of the game and resets all you've done about that dungeon or boss. Also, almost nothing new about the gameplay. I don't understand why the Diablo Immortal is free but this one overpriced...

It is not worth buying! 9/10 Changes made by the Developers since its Release, are so far away from what the Playerbase and Payerbase is asking for, GIGASADGE Realease.

Before patch 1.1.0a came I wanted to play both eternal and seasonal realm in parallel, but after it, I don't find a reason to play either.

For white knights being forum posters and streamers like REVENANT, of course this game is not a 0, it's quite obvious, but understand it's the only way to voice my concerns.
As soon as Blizzard fixes it, I'd be more than happy to update the score accordingly.
Let's talk about the current state of the game:
Is it fun to play? Well for a newcomer, it might be, even considering all the issues mentioned in previous reviews, at least until level 50-70.
For me, having played the pre-season, no, the game it's not fun to play anymore.

Also, I want to say in the past I played WoW and enjoyed it, but after D4 fiasco I read about other f'ups like Diablo Immortal, OW2, ... and to be honest it seems like lately the only thing Activision Blizzard cares is quarterly reports, instead of making a good product for their players (which by the way, if done properly will be visible on the quarterly reports, in a positive way)

As you grow, you find that enemies scale with you, so you get weaker and weaker and you level up, only having the upper hand on some level up capstones. Same with items. The vast majority of item effects are just stat changes, very few have interesting effects that change how you play. And if you find something you like, there is a 50/50 that is a non viable build that you wouldn't know is horrible until you search for guides. Not to mention some classes are vastly weaker than others.
End game is grindy in a bad way, easily making it boring and not worth after the story is done. Side question are repeated over and over, same for dungeons and end game events.
Add that to the new Season 1, in which everything was nerfed to make it grindier and make players weaker, just signs for a continuation of a bad gameplay.
if you love Diablo, you'll take 20 or 30 hours of fun out it. Otherwise, not worth the AAA price tag

Their faces during the last developer live-stream (campfire, as they call it) said it all. I WISH I could be the fly on the wall come the time the developers have to defend these decisions to their higher-ups, and explain why suddenly it's one of the lowest rated games in recent times (which is an accomplishment, given all the aweful releases in 2023) and why there's a mass-exodus of players. Save your money, buy the good Diablo on the battle-net launcher instead (D2R) and enjoy hours upon hours of fun. Expand

Blizzard likely rushed this game due to poor world of warcraft dragon flight sales.

I've been playing Diablo since D1. It has always been a smash and grab game with high intensity. D4 is none of that. Blizzard has released another barely beta ready product as a cash grab.

In the open world you've been given a horse to ride about, but it is so buggy and janky you'd rather walk. The mob count is so sparse and objectives are so spread out that stopping to kill trash packs on the way is such a time sink it seems pointless. Then if you do stop and kill mobs the items and gold dropped are more like clutter than anything. Most of the time I don't bother picking up the items or the gold. Not picking up gold in a video game? That should be enough of a design flaw to get anyone's attention.

Everything in the game scales with your level. Killing a mob at level 1 feels the same at level 50. You don't feel stronger. The cost of items at the vendor scale too with everything being just out of your price range with the gold in your bags until you have gear that is so much better you would never use the vendor. So, why have one selling me blue items I'll never want?

The dungeons are empty. You can walk about for literally a minute and not encounter anything. Then when you do find something it's like 6 mobs. Then your resources all drain before you find the next tiny pack.

The dungeons are also insanely repetitive in both map design and objectives. I just completed 4 of the exact same instance. Same map, same mobs, same objective. Not the same dungeon 4 times but 4 different ones that ended up being exactly the same. The objectives are really frustrating. Normally you're picking up an item or using a lever as far East as possible then the next one is as far West as possible then returning to the middle to a barrier that has dropped. Pray there aren't 3 or more objectives blocking your progress or you will be running in circles backtracking over empty areas that you've previously cleared. Sound fun to run for minutes through an empty dungeon over and over and over? I don't think anyone that makes the game plays the game.

All the running about just feels pointless. You're looking for demons and can't find them. And when you do, you don't care because they don't drop much of anything. It all feels like the game is set up just to keep you logged in and inflate their engagement metrics.

They also implemented some hot garbage called renown from World of Warcraft. It is reputation with minor rewards with each zone in the game. Apparently, you need to re-grind it every season. Hard, 100% pass. This alone is why I won't be playing any more. Zero interest in re-doing the same boring content repeatedly. I'm here to save the world and kill demons not re-activate the town portals.

The last unforgivable transgression is the 'battle pass". I'm a sucker and purchased the pre-sale of the game and forgot it had one month's free battle pass. I was drilling in the menus for season one to see how much it cost and what the rewards would be. The game automatically cashed in my freebie with no confirmation. Thankfully it was free as I would have been furious to purchase an actual battle pass. It comes with nearly nothing. Some crappy "transmogs" and a mount I'll never use. It further insults your intelligence and wallet by giving you some in game currency. Is it platinum? Who cares what it is called as they give you less than the amount to purchase the cheapest item in the in-game store.

One of Diablo's core tenants has been hardcore. I wouldn't bother much unless you are a true die hard. They seem to be trying to make the game an MMO and the loading between zones will lag out for several seconds just moving about on a solid internet connection. Enough time to get gibbed by some trash for sure. There is no reason hard core players shouldn't be able to play in an offline mode.

There is no in-game communication to speak of. No global channel. Very hard to find new friends. There is a clunky interact menu to wave at people or inspect their gear. And there is a guild finder, but the few times I checked it there weren't many offerings.

With all that negativity there are also some great points. The campaign is fantastic with the exception of the minority 'girl power' forced narrative. The art, video and sound work are all outstanding. The cut scenes are great and smashing a mob into 1000 bits feels immersive with deep crushing sounds. The implementation of the Butcher is awesome!

Unless you just have to play now with your friends, i'd wait and buy it on sale. The campaign is worth the price of a movie ticket, but not $70. Maybe they will fix some of the systems, but i doubt it based on their track record.

How is it possible to have gone through all this in D3 to not have learned a single lesson? and worse to repeat the very same mistakes again! Despite the graphics and mechanics being ok, their isn't much to do with them. Once you finish the campaign and get the mount, You tend to ride past the areas you'd have to fight to go through which makes the open world useless. You can't raid dungeons overpowered and clear them fast because of the leveling. It would take quite some time to clear them all. The HT and NM are ok but they get old fast. Not a review bomber over the patch. I don't care about the patch because honestly I haven't been able to muster up the interest or energy to force myself to play long enough to reach high enough level for it to matter.

After the streamlined arcade game that was Diablo 3, Diablo 4 is an improvement. However, it's only that; an improvement over Diablo 3. Anyone who was looking for some manner of return to D1/D2, even in a small way, is going to be massively disappointed.

Virtually no D1/D2 gameplay elements make a comeback here. Instead, the mistakes made with D3 are mostly fixed or otherwise improved. As such, there's no identifying items, no scrolls of town portal, it's free and unlimited instead, no stat leveling, no weapons for everyone.

Combat is more varied now, as there's actually a use for more types of attacks and spells rather than havin to rely only on splash damage attacks to deal with the endless swarms like D3. There's still no real Attack button so your Sorcerers and Necromancers still can't use swords and spears and shields, but at the very least they actually hold their equipped weapons when performing their skills/spells, instead of havin them disappear like in D3.

The D3 "Infinite Potion" system is back, although at the very least they make it so that health pickups do not automatically heal you but give you "potions", of which you can hold 4-5 charges to heal when you need. If you run out of potion charges, you can't heal. It's a rather clumsy attempt to be more like D1/D2 without abandoning the streamlining of D3.

Unfortunately it seems they either ran out of ideas with the skills or ran out of time to make them feel particularly different. Worst offender I can see thus far is the Necromancer havin many different selectable skills that all basically amount to "Hold out hand and a colorful wave flies at enemy, damage is done".

The Sorcerer/Sorceress has the best skills, with plenty of variety and some D2-era skills returning to flesh it all out properly. Others unfortunately are severely lacking. The Barbarian is just boring, with only 3 shouts and a sequence of generic attacks that mostly amount to "swing weapon in a slightly different way". And they don't even get to use shields.

The Druid as well feels like it was the primary victim of the "ran out of time" hypothesis. Basically, there is no "transform" option for the Druid. Instead, you get a skill that is assigned to Wolf or Bear, and when you use it, you instantly transform into a Wolf or Bear. Then as soon as you use a different skill, you will instantly transform back human. Not only does this look underwhelming but it means you can't mix up skills, or do things like summon or command creatures while in Wolf/Bear form.

The game world itself, so far, has been very underwhelming. There is no more Act system; instead it's one big world, like an MMORPG. You also see other players wandering around at the same time as you, like an MMORPG. They can join in your battles or clog up the merchant's doorways with their 30 skeleton minions. There's also a ton of quests you can track at any time in a list, like an MMORPG. There's also no way of keeping track of completed quests, you can't coordinate sidequests with parties, and oftentimes you will end up with party members missing out on cutscenes or dialogue due to them being out of place. Some reviews I've seen have said you basically need a "designated clicker" because of this idiocy.

tl;dr, the more time I put into Diablo 4, the more miserable the experience gets. Each class has so few actual skills to play with that I'm switching out classes whenever I get bored and thus basically repeating all the starter quests.

By level 25, you've unlocked every possible skill, so all the skill points just go into "make it slightly stronger" or "add some mediocre little buff" for min-max play. There's no sense of POWER in any magic items like in D1/D2; unique items offer boosts like "+2% to Close Attack when Barrier is active" or "+4% to critical with each Core skill hit on a Stunned enemy"

None of that means anything to me. D2 items had things like "Ignore enemy armor", "+50 to strength", "Half poison duration", "50 charges of lvl 20 Teleport". Actual visible benefits.

I've been playing D3 and D2R leading up to D4's release. I finished D3 and put it away. It was fun the first time, but had 0 replayability. D2R I started about a month before D4 came out.

Now almost 2 months after D4 has come out, for every 1 hour I put into D4, I find myself putting 2 hours into D2R, and enjoying it much more.

Diablo 2 Resurrected just has more to offer than Diablo 4 in almost every way. Bigger and more interesting maps, more skills, more items and weapons, more interesting story, no long boring in-game cutscenes, and just a better, more fun experience overall.

D4 endgame loop is not fun at all. As many people have said before, we all love the nostalgia that Blizzard games bring to us. But I think they are truly just a corporate swamp now. I suggest no one buys any cosmetics or passes until we see rich content and features added. Reskinning dungeons is not enough. Just because it was done in the past and worked, doesn't mean it's the winning formula for the future. They spent maybe 50 million on worldwide advertisement when the game was basically selling itself. If they just spent half of that on a massive development team, they would be making even more money on cosmetics right now!!!!! Such a shame....

The game deserves a slightly better score but hopefully these ratings will pressure them to fix things sooner.

Background on me: I've been playing blizzard games since I found warcraft 1-2 at CompUSA . A few years later, i snuck in diablo 1 in my moms shopping cart at Costco. That should give you my age range... lol

The lack of experience on the team is resounding - from terrible communication to extreme patches that fluctuate player experiences multiple times per week, to a general display of a lack of both confidence in their product and respect for their customers. It's almost as though the company still believes it's the best studio in the world, and isn't able to see its own failures.

This game was very clearly made to be a p2w cash grab in the vein of Diablo Immortal, but after customer backlash changed this game's destiny, it slowly developed into the worst of both worlds - all of the grindy awful gameplay to push a player to a pay to win cash shop mixed with an arrogant design team that both doesn't understand their own game math and also doesn't understand what their customers want.

This game should have and could have been Blizzard's saving grace - but clearly, it falls far short of the mark - and it's not the art, the visual style, or the sound - it's the game developers and their lack of ability or care to create something great shining through.

Do yourself a favor - skip this game. Go play literally anything else. This game is the definition of "Not worth $70".

its a "No fun allowed" kind of game. Anything thats fun gets removed or nerfed to the point where its not fun anymore. Dont trust the diablo fanboys, they're boot lickers.

I love the Diablo games . D2 was the top 20 years ago and it still is , but the reason I am no longer playing it is just because I have had enough. I have all d2r , d3 and d4 games and have countless hours put into them . Ever since the review on blizzcon 2019 I was hyped and excited about Diablo 4. However I was not expecting them to release the game so soon and obviously was a mistake. II love the Diablo games . I have made necro , rogue and 2 sorc characters . It is enjoyable to some extend but when you have to beat the glitches and struggle throughout the entire process of building your sorc character , it gets pretty annoying and not enjoyable and this is the main reason this game sucks . It was not ready for a release and if they expect us to waste our time testing their unfinished product they are wrong. I will no longer participate in this alpha testing ridiculousness . I might come back to the game in a few years if the Diablo 4 managers and developers get through their heads how to build a successful game and community around it.
P.S I really want to play the game , but in this condition it gets me angry and frustrated , so I bette quit . That's it

After a long time grinding in the game I have reached level 82 then I got bored. Because only thing that I have done in the last times that I have played Diablo was just waiting to helltide and legion events to upgrade my equipments. Me and my friends are excited to see more content in the season update at least hoping for some new world events like helltides or legion events. But...
Blizzard have another plans such as not adding a new end-game content on the other hand making very hard to get end-game by nerfing leveling, increasing cooldowns, nerfing classes that are already nerfed, long story short, increasing damage taken and decreasing damage given etc.
They think that the people who play this game is not gonna give up when they came out with such a brilliant plan, but you know they are wrong. As you can see this section that made players crazy. They apologized afterwards and they promised they gonna release a patch that fixes all problems. You can guess the patch released after that promise.
I'm not gonna play this game until I see some proof that Blizzard cares about players.

This time, for some reason Diablo 4 just need to be the difficult one, you spend hours and hours studying and farming and leveling to get to a point that you can actually play an enjoy, then, Blizzard will just change it and destroy everything that you have worked on. Players spent their time and followed the developers designs to be powerful in the game, what's wrong with that???? Blizzard had to make players feel helpless and angry? One day you feel like you finally achieved something, then the second day you are back to zero just because Blizzard had to make some "Improvement" on the game. VERY VERY VERY disappointed and angry. You don't torture your customer like this! Not in any industry!

It is a terrible game at the price of 70EUR, even though I bought it at 99EUR for the Ultimate version.
Only the good points are the cutscenes, they are very well-produced.
The rests of the game are trash. Blizzard tried to get money from players quickly and in exchange, they released a game at the beta stage. The game is super boring. You will not know what to do next and next.

The game is super boring. You will not know what to do next and next. Everything just repeated without any incentive, motivation, or reward. The itemization is extremely bad. Some legendary items with too long, conditional, and hard-to-understanding affixes make you confused about how they work. For their Key Indicator Performances, they make the game become super slow and a waste of players' time: many backtracking, running through empty maps, and increasing time for leaving dungeons, ... The game has turned into a tedious chore. There is no fun for all-time-running out of resources to cast core skill, the countdown is super long and the only way is to wait.

Very questionable and nonsensical direction like patch 1.1.0a/1.1.1 is ruining the game and it looks like D4 is trying to follow the exact same path of D3 in a bad way. We will see a different game director in the not too distant future.

Uninspired is the best way to describe this game. This was a game phoned in by people that don’t like their job. It felt like a game created by a corporation. Which is what sounds like what Blizzard has become

The Art is awesome. - The storyline is not bad but flat. - The multiplayer aspect is very under developed and sub par. - The base game is there its playable.
While it is different it isn't different enough to be like wow this is amazing everyone should play it. It did however fulfill my nostalgia and i hope the team learns enough to have a fresh take on the next one if they get the chance

Talents that don't matter because they are bugged - Quests you cant complete because thy are bugged- New season Journey quests you cant complete because they are bugged. New aspects that do nothing because they are bugged

I really don't understand the Devs playing with numbers that work trying to find a balance and change the feel of the game - When simple major game mechanics like resistance don't even work. Its a waste of time trying to balance players when major mechanics don't even apply correctly in the first place. Why even have a seasons journey when most the hearts they introduced were bugged and don't work correctly.

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.
