Lacks all the features that made diablo 2 great. Hardly any randomization in levels, boring stat system where only one stat per character class is important, no real character builds with skills and so on, dumb boss fights with cutscenes, no nice loot runs and it had a stupid real money auction house at launch as well which is just moneygrubbing.

Very few positive things to say about this title. So much expectation for an expensive title with so limited content, missing variety, options, built according to feedback years after release, absence of real multiplayer , terrible balance during first 2 years. Nonsense storyline. Development based only on items

    Graphics are good for 2012

I seriously doubt that Blizzard will recreate the gloomy hopeless atmosphere of the original. It has no distinct character, there is no graphical distinction between the wow Diablo or Starcraft universes they all have the same lighthearted humor, flashy graphics and character archetypes. Diablo was never about that, it was about exploring a grim dungeon trying to save what is left of a small village with a dark history. Diving deeper into the abyss. Even Titanfall after release was more exciting than Diablo III. Sad that Blizzard thinks about new generation of kids and doesn't care about oldschool gamers.

I've played Diablo 1, Diablo II and later fell in love with Diablo II: Lord Of Destruction in which I spent a lot of time replaying it.

This game sold purely on it's name. The core gameplay is nothing like it's predecessors. If you liked DIablo 1 or 2 I do not recommend this game. However it is a playable generic hack and slash game. For more Diablo I'd recommend Path of Exile or Grim Dawn.

I've followed Blizzards troubleshooting guidelines with no success and have submitted numerous tickets. If you're lucky enough you may get a vague reply back which only adds to the frustration. One would think after spending countless hours troubleshooting a problem that you could just call and talk to a live representative and have then walk you through the steps to resolve the issue bit that would nearly be dreaming. I would not recommend this game to anyone as the game is full of bugs and the tech support is brutal. Hopefully they can change this in their two upcoming diablo games. Low and behold we got a Warcraft game that was desperately trying to be Diablo-like in all the wrong ways. When I saw the first videos of gameplay I was taken back. The amount of reused assets as well as the warcraft-like aesthetic and lighting really ruined this game for me. For years I had been craving a fresh, dark, gritty, and lonesome experience that is iconic to the Diabo franchise but instead, we all got this nonsense. The storytelling is light-hearted and has too much comic relief, it feels more in the spirit of a WoW side quest. Throughout my entire playthrough, I never felt the 'jump-in-your-chair' fear that previous titles had. This game is 'spoopy' at best; like Luigi's Mansion, but it's not even cute. It's obvious that the out-of-touch exec's calling the shots had their heads so far up their a**es that they thought they could just carry the successful aspects of Warcraft over to Diablo.
Not to mention, the online requirement is essentially the game industry admitting defeat in the battle against piracy. The fact that you make the game more difficult to play legitimately than a pirated version is just the biggest f**k you to your paying fans, but then again I don't understand why anyone would want to pirate this waste of hard drive space.

Bosses of Diablo 1 make a comeback in the most cringe way. The Butcher pops into an arena-like boss room in cleaned-up kiddie-friendly way, looking all cuddly like a Saturday morning cartoon. The boss room is sterile and devoid of any blood - nothing like when you met him in the far superior Diablo 1.
The classes are lackluster as well. Of the base game only the Wizard was good. The Add-on at least gave us the Crusader which I found to be the only class worth playing. If you want the Diablo 2 favorite Necromancer be prepared to fork out more $ for an add-on that only gives you that class and nothing else.
Diablo 3 has zero identity. Everything that made D1 & D2 so great is gone. Then D3 recycles the entire 2nd Act of D2 in Act 2 of D3. The new art style is terrible and Blizzard just mocked fans for complaining about it.

Diablo III vanilla was confused about what it should be. It was an ARPG that tried to be an MMO, and failed at being both.

Fewer kinds of gems than the predecessor, a clear defined endgame, boring copy-paste builds, no depth in gameplay, and a downright broken class balance.

I bought this on a whim packaged with Diablo 2 Resurrected. I found the Necromancer to be really boring, so I switched to Barbarian and had a wonderful time. I did notice that there was a whole lot of streamlining compared to the previous games but I was havin fun.

Then I started a new game and saw it was not just streamlined, it was simplified to such a degree that it almost feels like a mobile game. I had fun once, but there was no replay value at all, and the fun I did have was more due to the basic Diablo elements, and not from any particular thing that is new to Diablo 3.

Basically, every class has an identical skill loadout now. They're all even labelled with the same categories, with Left Click being "weak attack/spell", Right Click being "stronger attack/spell", etcetera. Number 4 being big huge special skill with the longest cooldown timer.

There's a lot fewer skills overall, but they have variations on them with "runes" which are just sub-settings for the skill.

The whole of the gameplay revolves around these skills. There aren't any more attacks with weapons, so to speak; you can put a sword or spear on a necromancer or a wizard but they will never actually use them, unlike Diablo 1 and 2. They're just numbers adding to the damage done by the skills.

The whole game is like this, all ground down to a bland numbers game. And the game absolutely loves its frigging numbers. In Diablo 1 and 2, you were using weapons generally that did damages like 2 to 6 damage, 8 to 20, 100 to 200 for highest levels, hundreds of HP, hundreds of armor.

In this game, the numbers literally go into the millions and billions. Number pop-ups when you deal damage show when your attacks do damage, going up to literally hundreds of thousands by mid-high level, and HP going into the tens of millions or hundreds of millions for highest level bosses.

What's the point of this huge number inflation other than to waste screen space?

Actual combat overall has basically been cut down to just one specific style. Every single group of enemies is a pack of dozens. Almost all the skills you get are area of effect damage skills. Combat always amounts to "use the skill that does the most splash damage". You get XP boosts for combo kills, which very easily go into the dozens in just a single encounter. It almost cheapens the combat experience as you're no longer actually clicking on enemies to try to kill them, but just mashing the clicker wherever you can hit the most number of enemies at once. If it were a zombie movie, Diablo 1/2 would be more like Night of the Living Dead or Dawn of the Dead and Diablo 3 would be like World War Z.

Virtually everything that previously served a purpose in D1/D2 returns in D3, but not to actually serve a purpose but just as nostalgia bait. "Remember potions?" There's no potions anymore, BUT there is a health potion button you can press for free health and a 30 second cooldown. "Remember runes and gems and the horadric cube recipes?" Some of that is here, but you have to spend gold to upgrade, spend gold to upgrade gems, and the gems effects have been simplified, with only chest armor and weapon sockets havin unique boosts.

"Remember unidentified weapons and scrolls of identify?" There's still unidentified weapons, but they are extremely rare, and you can identify them for free in town. "Remember the town portal scrolls?" Town portal is now free and available to you at any time with no cooldown. Worse, there's also waypoints but you can use them literally anywhere and at any time. They're no longer like waypoints of D2 but just permanent town portals you can access from anywhere.

As well, there is no real Singleplayer mode. You have to be connected at all times, even if you want to play by yourself. And you will be playing by yourself, in 2023, because there's so many different game modes, all subdivided by difficulty (of which there's literally like 12 or more difficulty levels) and by level, and almost no way of keeping track of other players outside of a game, so you can spend a hundred hours in a public game and literally never see another person ever.

If you've never played a Diablo game before, this would be a fun enough one-time single player experience. If you've played Diablo 2, all you can really focus on is how much everything has been streamlined, to such a degree that you barely feel like you're playing a full fledged AAA game, instead of a quick, cheap mobile or arcade game to bang around in while on the toilet or waiting for the dentist.

Diablo 3. Where do I begin? When you first start the game, you're immediately greeted by a reminiscent from the World of Warcraft, the login screen. And like in WoW or other MMOs, with the login screen you also get the various login errors. Error 37, Error 3005, and the usual problems with an online game launch...

"Wait! What's that about MMOs? Wasn't this supposed to be a single player game?", you ask. Yeah, except you need an always-on internet connection at any time you play the game. "Why?", you ask. Because of the online DRM, and the Real-money Auction House, and... "Wait, what?!" Exactly, but let's not even go there just yet. The point is, Blizzard had 9 (that's nine) years to develop this game, several stress tests during the beta, and their experience with WoW launch - one would think, to hone and polish everything. Turns out nothing went as expected because even two weeks(!) after the launch, the servers were still having problems and people couldn't log in or play the game they had paid for, two weeks ago. Okay, the worst problems were fixed afterwards, but that was a good reminder of why you should not have an online DRM forced into a game, unless it's really, really necessary. But in a single player game!? That's madness!

Ok, we get it. Because Blizzard decided to implement the Real-money Auction House into Diablo 3, they needed a way to secure their asses and make sure the game or items sold in the AH would not get tampered or changed in any way. That's alright - if this was a MMO online game! But it's not! Diablo has always been a single player game (featuring a co-op mode). We don't need to be online at all times. We don't need the Real-money Auction House (What kind of idiot would pay real money for virtual game items, anyway?), and we don't need the always online DRM! Madness! That's madness, and greed!

But wait, that's not all of it. The worst part is, the game is boring! Yeah, it's hack-n-slash dungeon crawling, but I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about the story, and the content. It's boring, predictable, and short! You can finish the game in 4 hours and it starts to repeat itself really fast. Everything after the Act 1 is just bad. There simply is not enough things to do! No character to customize, because the choices are made for you. No skills to choose, because you unlock them all with no effort. Nothing to achieve, nothing to gain, except farm better items... No, wait! You can buy them from the Real-money Auction House... Sigh!

There is also the graphics thing, and many more design flaws.. eh, choices, where Blizzard could've and should've improved the game, but they didn't. Instead, they took away all those things that made Diablo and Diablo 2 fun and challenging, and added things we didn't need in the first place. I guess that's what happens when you kick out the original developers and make a whole different people with no experience or proper vision of the previous games to design a sequel to one of the best game franchises ever. (And this is not to put down or belittle the developers skills, only to say the game you made was not the one the customers expected, or were made to expect.) Or, perhaps it could be because nowadays at Blizzard, it seems, the people who get to decide about things, are more interested in whole lot of other things (namely, money) than the enjoyment and excitement for games and entertainment, they once did. Things have been going downhill ever since the Blizzard became the ActivisionBlizzard.

I honestly in my right mind can't imagine how the majority of professional game critics gave this game a 9 or 10! Were you paid or are you just mindless ass-kissers? I'm giving it a score of 1, for the Act 1. Everything else was crap. (Nine years, Blizzard!)

TL;DR: It looks like a Diablo, it plays like a Diablo, but it is not a Diablo! This game might just be the biggest scam in modern video game history. If you love Diablo and value your time and money, avoid this game. If you are looking for a spiritual successor to Diablo, try Torchlight 2 (from the original Diablo team) or even a free game, called Path of Exile.

very dated graphics- I understand the desire to sell to a broader audience, but limited animations, single viewpoint, and screen shake?! The enemies all look like mannequins rather than hellspawn beasts. I was more afriad of Doom 2 monsters than these! No single player/DRM -enough people have mentioned this
Customization- much like what happened with WoW Cataclysm, there is no more choice in development. I dont want to play like other people; let me choose, let me fail if that is the case. All skills are granted as the character increases in level. There are no attribute or skill points to customize your character.
Overall just boring- maybe the game will intensify with the the 'higher difficulties' (read: stat padded mobs), but I can forsee this game becoming a very one-dimensional gear farming title. Quests are not at all memorable or exciting, nor are they class specific.
Now that people can 'play to pwn" with the real money auction house, Blizzard is just sucking the money from gamers who simply do not know better (the ~300 people that have given this game positive reviews thus far).

I was able to quit WoW with ease after how bad Cataclysm let me down, and now I will get a refund for this complete waste of $60. Well done Blizzard, you just lost a customer who had been loyal since 1997. At least there is still Valve!

When a potion costs you 100+gold So you need to collect several inventories full just to buy 1 potion. Wasting about 5 potions doing so. The bosses feel unoriginal and less unique than older games and unique monsters feel less than thrilling to find. Shrines feel USELESS. The only thing going for this game is a beautiful art style. I liked the old story line in D2 where you unlocked a different story where you get to see what happened and how it happened. While in D3 the cut scenes are just cut scenes of the story you just went through almost like a recap. This is very much pay to win game who ever invests the most money will have the best gear and not really a game of skill.. Expand

Assuming you could play the game problem free its probably worth an 8, but the fact I can not play it, and as yet have been unable to maintain a solid connection due to Blizzards servers being overloaded and underprepared makes the 8 irrelevent, I officially give this game a 1 because its unplayable which by definition means its a bad game.

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
