    * Lack of social support - poorly implemented chat channels, automatched game joining only, ghost town effect, 4 player limit = even less socializing.

    * Cheesy B-movie story-telling, cliche one-dimensional characters, corny voice-acting, non-sensical/comical actions by villains, predictable twists and plotline.

    * Lack of diverse character types within and among classes - no more physical/caster/hybrid - all character types now rely on weapon damage like physical characters in D2. This destroys a huge amount of itemization/gearing choices, as there's no longer a deviation between decentralized gear (caster) vs centralized gear (physical) vs a build that needs to balance the two (hybrid).

    * DRM online only - no offline single player, no lan support. Laggy servers, and all the same issues of botting, duping, spamming, and trade exploits present in a game that's over a decade old. * Crappy UI that's designed by a console developer - convoluted to navigate, clunky, and inefficient at utilizing screen space.

    * Approx FOUR times less legendaries (uniques/runewords) in the game than D2:
    * 9 chest pieces vs 37 uniques + 14 runewords
    * 18 swords vs 35 uniques + 26 runewords
    * 6 shields vs 22 uniques + 8 runewords
    * 7 bows vs 19 uniques + 16 runewords

    * 4 gems vs 7 gems + 8 unique jewels + 33 runes + a NEAR LIMITLESS variety of magic/rare jewels.

    * Legendaries are generic, boring, and don't have the flavor that D2 uniques/runewords did. Randomization of 1-3 entire affixes also makes the item much less iconic or powerful than before.

    * A severe lack of combat mechanic affixes compared to D2.

    * Inferno mode is broken. It's not more difficult, it's just cheap. 1/2-shots everywhere, melee is severely handicapped. A number of retarded monster affixes that should never have been put in. Most builds except for a select few aren't even viable. There's no semblance of strategy, just having the best gear possible and dumb luck in not hitting the wrong champions.

    * Quests feel a lot more forced and non-optional than in D2.

    * RMAH diminishes the sense of achievement of finding items. Spending hours finding a great item just doesn't feel as rewarding when you know you can find something similar at the RMAH for a couple of cents. Although buying items with money was prevalent in D2, at least it was hidden away and not endorsed for all players to see and use.

    * Farming has shifted from item finding to gold finding. However, gold finding is considerably less fun than item finding. D2 was like playing the slot machine, each pull of the lever and you had a chance at something amazing. D3 is like going to work everyday, earning a paycheck, then buying what you want with the money.

    * Outdoors feel a lot more linear, which is amplified by their completely static nature - there's less vast open areas with less monsters at a time compared to D2 = less opportunities to kill hoards of enemies at once.

    * No ethereal or superior items, no ability to create items with such properties or transmute it onto items you own, no gambling, no charms, no way to reroll item affixes. Mystic used to be able to do this, then got scrapped. All this just represents more dumbing down of features.

    * Lack of character uniqueness/identity/ownership - all builds are freely changeable, many builds in the late game are similar or identical - no character permanence + lack of customizability = lack of character attachment.

    * Lack of in-depth customization - skills only have 1 level each so it's impossible to specialize in certain skills to the extent you could before. You can't specialize in builds that aren't predetermined for you through the passive trait system. Because there are no points to allocate, there's no more tinkering with unique builds, thinking about your build, or calculating your allocation of skill points/synergies.

    * Low replayability - no point in making more than 1 character for each class. All unique builds can be tried out in the timespan of a few minutes, instead of a few weeks. Unique builds aren't practical in Inferno. Not enough depth in customization. Not enough depth in itemization. Bad pvp = low incentive to find loot. Bland loot = low incentive to find loot. Gold farming = low incentive to find loot. Low social support = less fun while playing. After beating inferno, is there even a point in continuing to play a game that's no longer fun?

The first being Blizzard's lack of preparation for the flooding of the servers. What I don't understand is if Blizzard can afford to run WoW, one of the world's most popular online games, day in and day out with no server compromises, then how can it not handle Diablo 3 when they've had 12 years to prepare for its imminent release? This brings me to my next point, the need to be constantly online even to play single player. Why should I have to be online to play single player, a mode that utilizes no online components whatsoever? This is further complicated by Blizzard's ineptitude to anticipate the flooding of the servers. This means that the consumer has been unable to play a mode that should not utilize online servers due to Blizzard's huge blunder. Like I said before, if this game were only $30, then it wouldn't be as bad. The fact that Blizzard gave us an unprepared piece of garbage for $60 is what makes this game terrible. Expand

    This would be such a great game, if it was playable. This has to be the most horrible launch in the history of PC gaming. Blizzard should be ashamed of themselves. Working on this game for 10 years, with the experience of running the most successful mmo in history, and they can't even handle a co-op game. Shame on you, blizzard. Shame on you.

We actually managed to sidestep the login issues, so this review will not be taking blizzard's disastrous handling of drm and their servers into account. That's not to say there's nothing I don't like about the service. The friend system blizzard set up for battlenet is flat out stupid. Why do you need a special code to add a friend? Seriously why? Considering how important it is for adding friends, why isn't it on clear display on your in game profile? I didn't pick the numbers, they were randomly assigned to me, so I had to open up a browser, go to my battlenet account and look it up. It is frankly a pointless hassle. We're friends in starcraft 2 anyway, why doesn't that carry over? Blizzard's digital distribution system is just flat out crappy. But on to the actual game. Well it's not very pretty to be quite frank. It's got good art direction, but it's not an mmo, no need to have the game render 500 people at once. Why aren't there better graphics settings? The game certainly knows that it's not an mmo, because mmo's have character customization. Diablo 1 and 2 had preset non customizable characters because they used rotoscopings of 3d models well in advance of what the game and pcs back then could render in real time. Diablo 3 has mmo quality graphics, so why can't we at least have a little customization? An immediate comparison for me here is vindictus, an instanced mmo beat em up game where classes are pre set characters. That game is about 3 years old now, looks better, and has pretty robust character customization anyway.
    The next biggest issue with character customization is that you can't assign stat points. So the only difference between characters is their equipment and what skills they have equipped. All skills are automatically unlocked at set levels, so everyone has the same skills to pick from. The rationale behind this being that people would just find whatever was the most efficient build and everyone would do that, but I don't see how removing everything changes that. People will still do the exact same thing, it'll just be a lot easier for everyone to switch. Frankly it takes all the diversity out of things. You'll never see people coming up with any wacky builds or trying new things because there's nothing new to try.
    So items are basically the ONLY way to distinguish characters. Well then they must have put a lot of work into making lots of really diverse items right? Nope. You can dye items. That's about it. You'll get a million of the exact same looking hat with randomized stats. They haven't improved it an iota since diablo 2.
    So on to the story. Is the story interesting? No. No it isn't. It's generic as hell. Blizzard has lost all the writing panache and daring they had in the starcraft/diablo 2/warcraft 3 days. Just imagine the most simplistic straightforward story about fighting demons and you'll basically have diablo 3's story. The characters are all featureless talking heads that talk like their in a dining car murder mystery and I feel like I'm in one too. The gameplay. It's exactly the same as diablo 2. I guess. You click on monsters, they die, you pick up gold and items they drop. 99% of items will be worthless trash you sell as soon as you go back to town, the other 1% will be an incremental stat upgrade. The boss fights are about as use all your abilities when they are off cooldown until it dies. Only less so. There's no dodging or strategy, and the bosses aren't particularly challenging, they just have big health bars. The only good thing about this game is the soundtrack. Blizzard may have fallen a long way in every other regard, but their composers are still top notch. The music is far more thrilling than the actual game.
    My bottom line advice is don't buy it. If you didn't like diablo 1 or 2, there's nothing about diablo 3 that will change your mind. If you loved diablo 1 and 2, you're more likely to be disappointed by what they gutted from those games than the graphics facelift circa 2008. If you're a lore buff and you want to find out what happened after diablo 2, I don't think you'll like what they've done. It's not as bad as what starcraft 2 did to starcraft's story, but it's certainly not a worthwhile investment. If you're just too diehard a fan to not get it then wait. Seriously, just wait. A price drop will make the game a lot easier to swallow. $60 is ridiculous for what we're getting. Also, the inevitable drm crack to make the singleplayer component of the game playable when blizzards servers down or you just can't be online (a plane, a road trip, just away from a connection, there's plenty of times when you can't be online and you should still be able to play the game you payed for).

Its Now been several years and many developers have made similar games, I had hoped with the long wait Blizzard had made some new additions to this iconic title or at the least made more modern updates to the old formula to continue its legacy. Sadly Diablo 3 did not deliver, lets set aside the launch day problems, if that were the only issue here I could forgive not being able to play much on opening day. The game play is solid but nothing new or groundbreaking but this game has a lack of customization that I find disturbing most good new RPG games Provide tools to customize the appearance of your character. It is important to many players In a Roll Playing Game to be able to make the character as they see it, to take ownership and grow him in to what they like, playing with other cloned players devalues the experience and makes it difficult to be a proud owner of your character. Worse then not being able to change your appearance is making every person playing the same class a clone, the skill tree idea has been such a great way to give players choices on how to make characters as they see fit and taking this away makes me feel like I am playing your character not mine. So now that we are all playing identical twins the trade off should be amazing graphics right? Well the graphics are not bad but they are not good either looking more like something that should have been released a few years ago and the sound is good but the voice acting leaves something to be desired (competing with Bioware in voice acting will make it tough for them to rate well in this). I have not had time to beat the game yet (I work long hours the rest of the week and it has been unplayable most of the opening day so I will have to wait till the weekend to play again I hope the bugs will be worked out by then) but I have been told that it is not very long. I hope this is not true and that Blizzard is not counting on PVP and repetition to keep us playing, and I really hope they are not counting on releasing several more expansions at $60 each containing content that should have been released with the original game. At this point the game would be rated at a 5 of 10 but there decision to take out offline play entirely making it so we are not really purchasing the game but more like renting it from them for as long as there servers are supporting it. Not to mention the inability to play a single player game because they are doing server work or my internet is down. People will support the policy because of all the cheating that went on in the other Diablo titles but removing offline play will not stop this and any one thinking that hackers will not find a way to hack and cheaters will not find a way to cheat this system are just kidding them selves. look at WOW its online only and that has not prevented several speed hacking and item duping hacks from being used over the years.
    To sum things up this game is a major step back from previous titles and I hope Blizzard realizes this and makes corrections bringing this game up to modern standards. My message to Blizzard, I own all the titles you have released on pc and they are good games but it seems that you have not been playing other games on the market recently so let me tell you what an RPG player expects in the year 2012 from a premium priced title, customization is key changing the looks and skills of your character makes it seem like you have hundreds of options instead of just the basic Classes, a long and involving story make me feel like I got my moneys worth out of paying your premium price , Graphics do not make the game and blizzard has never been known for cutting edge graphics so I can forgive the graphics if the game is reliable but making it rely on your servers and an internet connection takes away reliability leaving me withe a game that can be surpassed by smaller developers for a fraction of the cost (for the price of this game I could have purchased 8 copies of torchlight and torchlight 2 from steam and given it to many of my friends) . Overall I cant give this game better then a 3 as it is now i would love for Blizzard to listen to its fans and fix many of the things the fans are asking for but I don't hold much hope for that as it seems recently they see me as more of a wallet then a fan of there games.

Diablo gameplay is characterized by fast paced clicking and split second decision making. When you are trying to thread the needle through a pack of monsters and you are lagging or even start rubber-banding because of the forced online connection at all times, even for the single player game... it leads to a poor experience.

    While the previous Diablo games had online multiplayer, these were optional experiences that were available in addition to the core single player offline experience. Performance degradation because of the nature of online play is acceptable in exchange for enhanced functionality that is actually being used. Especially when the degradation is only experienced after completing the full offline experience. It is similar to how your friend talking during a movie that you are watching on your TV doesn't really ruin the experience if you've already seen the movie in a quiet movie theater.

    What Blizzard has done is to have filmed a movie and then REQUIRED you to watch it with your loud obnoxious friend talking and throwing popcorn during the entire thing. It doesn't matter what is on the screen, because it is ruined by the environment in which you are forced to experience it in.

There is no need to recreate characters, no decisions you make in the game are committments, and I don't see where any level of replayability will come from.

    Pretty game, great name, fundamental game flaws. 3/10

    Well, Blizzard should first fix its servers before selling the game. Apparently, they learnt nothing from the stress test. On a side note, always on DRM and auction house with real money, conveys a lot about Blizzard's greed.

    This game is just another proof of how greedy Blizzard became. Diablo 3 just beat the 60 bucks plank and breached to a new level - 77$ in my region. And what do we get for that price? 1) Poor story. Re-usage of everything that was in Diablo 2, and nothing new. 2) Internet connection needed to play in single player. 3) No LAN. Nuff said.
    4) All characters look awful. Male Demon Hunter and Mage look like some emo, but definitely not like a world savers. 5) In-game action house is just a way to ruin balance for players. And for Blizzard, it's another way to milk us.
    6) The game is too short. Some Korean beat it in 12 hours and 29 minutes. Wut? Wondering what took Blizzard so long to make that game...
    7) And finally, as 95% of new games on the market, it became casual. Yep, a game for those who don't give a crap about character customization, challenge, and plot. As everyone already said: no skill points to spend, everything upgrades itself just like in World of Warcraft, all abilities unlocking automatically, et cetera. It's not Action-RPG anymore. The RPG part is merely an illusion. The rating you see here, totally explains the quality of this game. And for all those fan-boys out there who gives Diablo 3 more than 6 score: after the "new shiny thing wow effect" fades away, take a closer look, and see for yourself, how awful the game market looks like now.

    Ahh Blizzard... After more than 10 years of waiting the expectations were high. It seems you not only didn't care but went out of your wait to put a thumb in the eyes of fans of the Diablo brand. I've compiled a bit of a list of the negative:
    -can't play without Interest connection (even single player game) > agitating and frustrate legitimate customers > horrible authoritarian DRM
    -no

    -no skill distribution > all characters will be the same at 60...
    -pay-to-win cash shop
    -graphics are pretty lacking as low resolution textures are hidden behind blur
    -graphics too WoW like, art direction unlike previous Diablo games. Grim, dark, and scary replaced with Wow cartoonish, excessively colourful and bland
    -few character animations
    -characters look the same (little visual customization)
    -cookie cutter abilities, auto attribute leveling system
    -cliche story
    -removed Diablo 1,2 features with WoW simplistic features
    -lack of content, game beatable in

    I was hoping for more out of D3. This is an early review and I will update the review after I finish at least Nightmare mode. Dumbed down skills = why? I have somewhat enjoyed some of the game so far, I may have had to high of expectations.

    So, this is a review from someone who has not played the previous 2 Diablo games. I can definitely tell that a lot of time was put into it. The gameplay get a little repetitive sometimes, but this is made up for by different environments and enemies to fight. I love anything with loot, this game delivers. There's plenty up for grabs after defeating enemies, smashing things, and so on. I have used the auction house, I personally don't think I'll use it much but it's a great extra feature to have. Now, all that said, that all applies to when the game actually works.

    Every time I have tried to play the game, I am plagued with login errors. I have had the game itself lag out due to connection issues. Blizzard has taken the servers down a few times for maintenance as well, which prevents you from playing the single-player at all because you cannot login. I have been, and am only interest in, playing single-player. Having to be online, logged in to their servers just to play the game is an extremely huge issue for me. This is the first game I have purchased with DRM as such, and I will NEVER make that mistake again. This feature, to me, renders the game broken. I cannot give a broken game a good rating. All that said, if they patch the game with an offline mode I would gladly give this something upwards of an 8... It's current state only deserves about a 3. I would not recommend this game to a friend because they would then want to fight me for making them spend $60 on something they cannot even use, and cannot return. You would honestly be better off waiting for a "cracked" version of the game that you can play offline, any time, anywhere. I do not agree with piracy at all, but in this situation I would almost encourage it. I own the game and if a pirated version gets out that I can play offline, I would download it immediately and give it more play than the version that I paid full price for.

    I was really hooping for something more. This game feels like Diablo II with only slightly better graphics. Wait till it goes on sale. I suppose I'll gain satisfaction by playing hardcore mode only.

    Only days after the release and there is a TON of issues to be resolved (lagg / dissconects etc )

    I DO NOT recommend buying this game untill the issues are worked out.

    Alright Blizzard let me get this straight. To prevent piracy and apparently profits, you force me to have an internet connection while playing single player, which has to connect to a server - which costs you MORE MONEY. My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

    For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

    When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
