The always online requirement, the many server issues, the lack of a necromancer (the Blizzard's statement that Witch Doctor was already filling the role and they would never add it in the future), and the Bazaar controversy. They all contributed to the low score of this game. Sure they sold a lot of copies, but they also harvested a lot of disappointed players, myself included. They finally had to release the necromancer in 2017, five years after the initial release, due to much popular demand, but it was already too late. Now most people is looking forward to D4 with the hope they learned from the mistakes. Time will tell if they did. I just hope they don't take another 10 years to release an outdated game again. Diablo 3 has been a huge disappointment for me as I am a vivid Diablo 2 player. Blizzard removed everything that defined the Diablo franchise, rather than improving on a winning formula and add new and awesome features upon the winning D2 formula. The people that worked on the D3 version we know since 2012 until today, came mostly from the WOW team or were newcomers and with that they brought with them a mindset and "taste" that is very "Anti-Diablo". On one hand I feel intrigued that I witness this massive scandal and the destruction of one of the best gaming franchises for the sake of "making more money". On the other hand, I am speechless because Diablo has been part of a big chunk of my life and there is a passion deeply rooted inside me. Seeing Diablo be destroyed for whatever reason breaks my hart.

Looking at "Diablo 3" as an action game unrelated to the "Diablo Franchise", I would rate D3 a solid 7, and a 8 with "Reaper of Souls".

Looking at "Diablo 3" as an ARPG and being part of "THE ARPG" franchise, its a massive failure, that many people cannot even grasp. I rate it a 3.5 and with "Reaper of Souls" I rate it a 4.

    Winning Formula for D4:

    1. Take D2 - Lord of Destruction
    2. introduce "Talisman" or simply put, a limited-space "Charm Inventory"
    3. Add D3 combat
    4. Add New-Era Graphics with "Time-Realistic" physics system
    5. Introduce new Runewords that will compete with already known existing and beloved Runewords
    6. Introduce new Unique Items that will compete with already known existing and beloved Uniques
    7. Introduce 2-3 new classes
    8. Introduce "Player-Hub Towns" where people can "mingle" and trade by enforcing "Item for Item"
    9. Allow open world PVP, with an option for players to "Opt-Out" from any PVP
    10. Introduce A massive amount of "Quest-Lines" that are "off the main path of the game-story" that unlock "Transmogs", Awesome Hard-To-Get Mercenaries, Bonus-Stash-Tabs, Spell-Effects, Weapon-Effects, Armor-Effects, Specialty items, Respec-Tokens (repeatable quest, and item also has low chance to drop as a normal drop), special Quest Capes that only drop after quest completion, etc.
    11. Introduce Micro Transactions for "Stash-Tabs", "Character Slots", "Transmogs", "Visual Spell Effects", "Mercenary Models", "Weapon Effects", "Armor Effects", "Character Class Voices", etc.
    12. Micro-Transactions fund the development for New Map Tiles for existing acts (which are then randomly assembled during map generation to constantly grow diversity and bring novelty and replay value, while also retaining the feel of "familiarity" to the player through "iconic locations tied to several individual tiles), New Monsters, New Items, New Transmogs, New Weapon Effects, New Visual Armor effects, Etc.

It's amazing how Blizzard was capable of getting a good game like Diablo 2 and turning it into this. Diablo 3 is a bag of disappointments and boring gameplay. Skip this and pray that ActivisionBlizzard will not repeat the same mistakes on Diablo 4.

To this day there is no real pvp (give me a break with this arena...) and really, the whole process of improving this game wasnt a pretty sight to watch. Expand

I loved the cinematics; Blizzard seems to have nailed those down to perfection. the story was a bit weak and not very interesting but hey... it's Diablo. that wasn't the strong suit anyway though it would've been nice to get something more out of this game aside from the lottery hook & sinker.

there's no one glaring reason why Diablo 3 isn't as popular or good as D2 or even remembered as D1. it's a combination of poor decisions and ignoring players.

As a hardcore player I was very dismayed at launch and didn't actually finish or play the game for more than a day at launch due to the numerous issues plaguing it. the always online BS especially.
I have dipped my toes in from time until a few months after launch when I started playing more and have since sunk a lot of hours into it. but as any HC player my Hall of fallen heroes is filled more by HC characters dying to server issues and game balancing issues than any 'real' death and in my opinion this very big issue for HC was never fixed.

Apart from that, it's very clear they didn't think about post campaign gameplay as there is none. you just do the same things over and over. without going into the details and why their additions to the game didn't really work just know you'll essentially be doing the same thing, exact same, over and over. combat is mostly unchanged from previous titles and it's all about the numbers and little else.

sadly, by this time at 2023 we know Blizzard learned nothing.

Its like a clicking simulator. Maybe it even it. The Story is really boring for me, i skip everything, after 2 hours of the game. Then i was suprised on how easy this game is... so i put it on expert and... its just boring. There is a boss, i click on him, dont need to move, and hes dead after 1 min. I think Lost Ark is even kinda better than this...

This is a good, enjoyable game, but with flaws. They got a lot right - the music, the endgame content, the replayability of the procedurally generated content, and the depth. However, it lacks character customisation and lacks the depth of D2.

The story line is awful, dreadful, and possibly the worst offense this game has done. It's predictable plot and contrite characters are just plain bad. Who approved this script, the ineptness is vast.

And the real burn, the real crushing hurt that sets in after about 100+ hours of game play is that you begin to understand just how bad it really is. . . that there is no way to realistically hope that subsequent patches can really "fix" what is really at the crux of existing contentions about this turd of a game in disguise: underwhelming, poor game re-design.

Patching this game = putting lipstick on a zombie pig.

I should also note that as my anticipation grew in the two weeks prior to Diablo III launch--I'm a real big Diablo fan or at least I used to be :(-- I hooked up my old Sony aperture grill Trintron CRT and played through Diablo I & II both to Hell difficulty levels. That experience was by far more rewarding and fun by at least an order of magnitude than the subsequent month I have given Diablo III. TRUE STORY.

Blizzard dropped the ball firing blizzard north staff and telling them to scrap d3. Then they merged with activision and had a huge cash cow called WoW. 1. stats: Diablo 2 had an issue, you had no reason to not pump up one stat. Except for the fact you know, it wasn't that huge of an issue. There was simple fixes that could of took place, reducing the hp scaling per vitality point and increasing the scaling of other stats for example. There was always builds will max vita, but there was also max str and max dex (titan baba and glasscannon zons) and even max energy sorc.

    2. DRM: while this upsets me, it isn't the hugest issue. If there is maintenence, as there has been. You can't play. If the servers are far away, you lag. If you have a bad connection (such as my friend) you get a constant 2k ping. A lot better ways of preventing cheats such as client side with server side authentication could have been used to at least reduce the dependence on servers. What if in 5 years they don't want to keep the servers up? This isn't d2 where the servers can be run on a small little think for a few bucks a month. Once they are down, we have no where to go, because there is no offline/single player.

    3. MMO. This isn't the same genre as d2. There is no replay value in this game, there is no clear and understood method of farming, there is no game channels, there is no future. You level a character once, do all the town and back talk to this person talk to that person quests. Then you're sitting there trying to figure out what to do. The level cap is 60, so there is no high goal of trying to hit 99. Any gear you want can easily be bought, so what is the point of grinding mobs? You're stuck, do you wait for pvp? Wait for an expansion, just to give more cash to a company that could lock you out of this game forever in two years? Or do you do the exact same back and forth talk and grab item quests and level another char?

Let's face it, this game has some fun hidden in it. But that's only with friends, and from what I can see, only the first run through. I hope blizzard does something quick, before they lose the diablo fanbase and is left to die.

ps. don't even get me started on the water-color graphics, while a few acts seem better then others. The art direction is horrible. I don't want a post-processing effect slapped in my face.

And what a surprise that was. Pixelated, somewhat colorful graphics, no gruesome dying animations and magic items that would drop very rarely and not be as interesting as those in Diablo 1. But... over time and thanks to a couple of patches that fixed the item drop rate, I got to appreciate at least the basic gameplay. Still... not nearly as good as the first one.
And now... Diablo 3. The disaster has been long in the making. For one thing, even less impressive graphics for its time than Diablo 2. Even more stylized. No dying animations at all, just crappy rag doll **** AND the world's most awful DRM: always on.
At least one person here is complaining about people bashing new mainstream games. Well... that's because they suck! Every single one of them that gets very low ratings has screwed up something in at least one major way. I actually find it very disappointing that e.g. that bug-ridden, visually pretty unimpressive Skyrim still got fairly high ratings. It is GOOD when people fight against the **** that is being produced increasingly these days! And you know what people should do instead of only rating it low? Not even buy such pieces of crap! Because with that, you're only encouraging those companies to keep making games that are of sub-par quality.

About the difficulty; This game is too easy on normal, and since I'm unable to change the difficulty, I have to rate that. Despite being totally new to the game, not once did I have to use potions. The exploration: If you're someone who tries to explore everything in a game, like me, then prepared to be punished. The dungeons have optional and main pathways, where the objective is. Thing is, if you went the wrong way (for example, you see your objective) you have to go all the way back to explore that one optional wing/room, and then again go all the way back to the main path. You get XP for mindless things like destroying barrels or benches as fast as possible. One positive thing however, is that you can interact with the environment to some degrees, like you can use a chandelier to kill some demons with it by dropping it on the ground.
So long story short, it has way too few pros and you burn out quickly from it (3 hours for me), so I wouldn't recommend getting this game, especially for the price they are asking for it.

WoW has it's balance issues in terms of DPS in PvE and class issues in PvP. They are constantly patching those and it is a work in progress just like any MMO. Getting down to it Diablo 3 did not have promised features and for a time the development team was not doing anything in the pre-release. I waited over 10 years for this game that had been redone more than once by Blizzard and I can firmly say that it was worth the wait. From PvP not being in game even though it says it is on the box, to the RMAH requiring you buy a device, along with the game you already bought, so you can use it. It has been a terrible ride. The first week's launch and the whole idea of being online to play a single player game was and is a slap in the consumer's face. Hardcore is out of the question as you are always online and lag is always an issue. I would never even think of making a character in that environment as the frustration of farming gear is already too much. Blizzard built the game so people would get to inferno and hit a brick wall. Only way to topple that brick was is to farm gear for hours on end or you can spend money at the RMAH. This is good for business but who the hell wants to pay more money on to something you already bought to do well in? Who the hell wants to farm for hours on end so you can progress through content you have already done? I am a hardcore gamer but I don't see artificial challenge worth doing. There is not anything in it for me. Lastly, the story was written by a guy who got hired on for his artistic abilities. CGI scenes and dialog should be skipped at all times it is just that bad. The plot does not line up to anything that happened in the previous games and should have been aborted by any normal human being. Service maintenance, consumer always being wrong, terrible customer representatives, and a grindfest is all that awaits the willing and able Diablo 3 fanatic. I would recommend playing D2 as even with the duping it is still more "fun" than this trainwreck. Expand

The game is fun but it's nothing groundbreaking. If you played Diablo 2 (D2) then you've played this game. The only improvement in my eyes is that you now pick up gold by walking over it instead of having to click on every single pile. The addition of forcing you to have a constant connection to the servers is annoying and should never have been implemented. I was never one to play D2The game is fun but it's nothing groundbreaking. The addition of forcing you to have a constant connection to the servers is annoying and should never have been implemented. I was never one to play D2 online and I only ever played with friends when we were on a LAN so forcing me to connect to Blizzard servers is extremely annoying. They have issues, have maintenance, or any other issues and all of a sudden I can't play a game I paid for. I honestly think that D2 is a better game solely because I can play it without an internet connection. Expand

gonna have to come back for a new review here; normal through hell are a fairly pleasant gaming experience; it wont last very long and its only fun your first time through. but the heart of the game; where all the loot tables are best; where 90% of all items are located; inferno mode. its a mess. designed around needing gear you could never ever ever hope to possibly get in less than 10000gonna have to come back for a new review here; normal through hell are a fairly pleasant gaming experience; it wont last very long and its only fun your first time through. but the heart of the game; where all the loot tables are best; where 90% of all items are located; inferno mode. its a mess. designed around needing gear you could never ever ever hope to possibly get in less than 10000 hours played. itemization is **** for a game that is all about the loot.

every single part of the "end-game" is directed to try and get you to use the RMAH; the game has no offline mode and the always online is frequently down and always laggy.

Sigh! Bought a game that is unplayable because of the schizofrenic DRM protection that always need you to have a working Internet connection. And on top of that their servers are unconnectable because of overload. You CAN NOT(!?) play this game offline. Shame on you Blizzard!

The reason we are so against this game is because what Blizzard is trying to accomplish is a very dark day for gamers. They have created a game designed to get as much money from its consumers as possible instead of creating something fun. The entire difficulty system is one gear check after another, and in order to get gear you must use the auction house. Any item that is any good will be placed in its real money auction, which Blizzard will take a 15% cut of the transaction. So in order for a player to realistically farm items at the highest difficulty they must first allow themselves to be farmed by Blizzard of real cash. If you do not spend real money and give Blizzard its 15% cut, you will only have a frustrating experience while everybody around you gets ahead. Don't allow a giant corporation like Blizzard start this horrible trend of making games that's completely designed to get money from us instead of it being fun. Don't think just because you were a wow player and got this game for free meant that you aren't going to end up paying for this game. Expand

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
