Even if you disregard the fact that you're playing a supposed-to-be single player game online that requires constant online connectivity, the game itself is boring. From what I can tell, it reverts back to a dumbed down, ancient gameplay formula, the tech used and mechanics of the game is atrocious in comparison to the games of today. If you put the failures of this game with the fact that Blizzard is such a large and powerful company and the game has been in the works for 10 years to produce the following list of failures, then I'm afraid your heart will sink once you realise you just wasted your game money on something not even worth 10 bucks on steam.

    a) Constant internet connection required for a supposed to be single player rpg
    b) Ancient and dumbed down gameplay
    c) The graphics and textures are ancient
    d) They have a zoom in option which you should never ever chose b/c it will make you cry
    e) Ancient isometric 3D nonsensical mess
    f) Boring gameplay elements
    g) Buggy collision mechanics
    h) Can't pause the game, EVER

I'm sure there is so much more, but really ignore all good reviews b/c they are worthless and are hardcore Diablo fans trying to trick themselves by tricking you, save your time, money and frustration and avoid this game completely. The only good thing about this game is the cool cinematics, which are used to trick people like me.

As an old diablo fan this game is so disappointing in every aspect I just can't bring my self to play it anymore after finishing normal. There is just no point. This.. so called "Diablo" has none, what so ever. From the mmo-related boss fights, simplified character progression mechanisms all the way to the loot and general look and feel. And the storytelling is just plain boring and uninspiring you don't actually care at all about it after a while.
If it was a new IP stand alone game from people who never made an RPG hack and slash before I would rank it as meh, an average game. But as a Diablo game? It sucks so bad I can't even begin to explain. I don't care how many expansions, patches or DLC they can churn out. They can't fix this. This game has been **** screwed over and generally ruined from the ground up. There is no amount of polish that can hide the problems it has. Because they are all at its core. Remember "games designed by gamers for gamers"? Well this is like "games designed by General sales managers for the 'oooh shinnyyyyy ' crowd they think gamers are.
I honestly feel insulted that they are peddling this peace of crap for a "Diablo" game.

If I was Blizzard I would take this game behind the shed, shoot it then bury it and never talk about it anymore. Then start all over again.

I'm not a casual player, I've spent hundreds and hundreds of hours playing previous Diablos. And guess what? I like the new one. To all you haters, hear me now. You cry because there are no town portal scrolls and identification scrolls. Well, now you just don't have to buy them every now and again, what you were doing in the previous installments. Cash didn't matter in D2, so you had unlimited scrolls nonetheless. **** graphics? Damn guys, Blizz has never been doing good graphics and those from D2 sucked as well, didn't care. **** artisans? Lol, you really wanna go mining and picking up flowers in Diablo or what? I don't understand all you whiners, it's simple enough for a hack'n'slash to have a system like that. All you gotta do in D3 is clicking from the beginning to the end? Well, I suppose this series was all about that. Auction house is a bad idea? Well, no more O xxx N xxx on the chat, you can buy and sell items instantly. I just don't know if the idea of 15% payment for every transaction is good. If I think that my item is worth 2000, and the guy buys it for 2000, because he thinks as well, why would the system steal my 15% from that? RMAH is the same thing. It's good, mainly because there will be less and less website sellers and those on auction sites. I just don't like the idea that Blizzard is taking 1 euro for every transaction + 15% cut when paying with PayPal. The only drawback that I agree with you is the lack of skill trees and attribute points, but on the other hand... Well, I was playing Bone Necro and I loaded most of the points in energy, so now the game loads them in intelligence when I'm playing my wizard. With necro I was loading points and using only 3 skills. Now there's no points and I'm using more skills. Well, I'll get used to it. Anyways, I really enjoy the game - it's a real hack'n'slash and it lives up to my expectations. Expand

With that being said; i really like this game (THE GAME! Not Blizzard). Ok, the story may lack a little something, but that i can look passed! I like the fact, that i don't need to make more than one character of the same class to try out all the skills. I like the newest feature, the auction house, which is playerbased and not a third party based. And the fact that each class has both a male and female hero/heroine.

The main issue of this game is that it doesn't contain an offline mode or even a single player for that matter. That being said, me being a service member and being at sea quite often, I'm unable to play the game in my downtime. I feel this game is going to be just like Duke Nukem Forever, highly anticipated and blown out of proportion with how awesome the game is going to be. I feel also that this game will follow the same path as Blizzard's "World of Warcraft", level caps and expansions following in the upcoming years with additional payments required. The game is also set to and extremely casual level with checkpoints all throughout the game. What happened to the old way? I truly hope they address a lot of these issues with upcoming updates and perhaps redesigning the game( Expand

Not only did Blizzard need 10 years to make this sub-par game, they have made it with MMO's in mind and moved it away from the "true way"of hack'n slash. The reason i am giving this a zero is that I am finally over DRM and the retarded money grubbing auction-house. This game is tantamount to highway robbery if you don't have internet. Also even if you do good luck getting on you it might happen right away it might not who the fuchs knows, Blizzard certainly doesn't. I would also like to point the hypocrisy of the real money auction-house, Blizzard has posited that gold farming in WoW is wrong but oh well if we get a cut its all hunkey dorey. On a more personal note I would like to say I own every game Blizzard has developed, and will not buy another one until they fire the apparent room full of retarded monkeys with typewriters who are high on mescalin running their anti-piracy/having common sense department. Another point of contention for me is the fact that it took them twelve years to make a game that looks four years old built on a server infastructure and DRM system i could have made with my pen1s nailed to my face. If games like Sins of Solar Empire and World of Goo (both of which are amazing) can release without DRM, and have a singleplayer while still making a profit. I'm inclined to believe that, Diablo 3 ,one of the most overhyped games ever that wasn't developed by Peter Molyneaux with a mewling sheep like fanbase that will buy anything Blizzard says is good because of their stellar track record since Warcraft 3 (sarcasm!) might make a profit. All in all I'm not saying pirate the game but I'm not saying don't pirate the game. I'm just saying the game is ultimately disappointing and is not worth sixty dollars for a game that could have been made without DRM at much higher quality in less then twelve years. So they force you to be online at all times and invented the auction house crap, the idea being to make (infinite) money (the % they charge for every transaction is more than ridiculous) with virtual items. The mistake was the real money auction house which by no means was worth dealing with DRM considering fans hate both. On other notes though...the game is a huge departure from Diablo in many ways...it just doesn't fully feel like a diablo game...the colors, the ambiance, the in-game cutsceneces (not cinematics mind you) its like the world of warcraft team took over, and although I played that game, they are two separate entities. I remember a diablo that scared the living crap out of me, with very dark haunting music and horrifying enemies, bodies on pikes and hung by their innards...that was the real stuff..it made you feel like you were slaughtering terrifying creatures. This game is easy...the characters are nowhere near as impressive as in the past...they talk too much....the bosses talk too much...and without going on a tangent its just literally been redesigned for the casual gamer and ultimately to make more money. Blizzard you really screwed the pooch on this one, 11+ years to develop this game...and although it is a mildy fun game(not nearly as addictive as the other two were) it is not a Diablo game. Simple story, diablo speaking?? Really....horrible voice-acting. Its just dumbed-down in every sense and I could go on all day. This game may appeal to new players and loyal fanboys who will make themselves play it, but the most loyal of the fans have been betrayed. I will absolutely play it, I payed 100 dollars for it...but I will not invest in another product by Blizzard, and unless this game is fixed...unless changes are made...the Diablo franchise is dead to me. I will not wait another 11 years for disappointment. Expand

Diablo 3 is only playable with a sustained internet connection, and if you happen to lose said connection at any point your gameplay, as well as any progress you've made since the last checkpoint barring exp, items/gold gathered, or quest progress is gone. Exploring a winding, confusing crypt (Spoilers: you probably won't be doing this much) and feeling immersed? We be prepared to start all over again if your internet decides to so much as hiccup. The lag is another issue cause by the forced online. Everything that I could see was server sided, if anyone on my connection decided to do anything I would have enemies rubber banding and attacks whiffing while they teleported around and whittled down my HP until it subsided. Maybe this is an issue with my connection, but the fact that I'm lagging while playing alone in a world generated specifically for this session is absurd. The gameplay in Diablo 3 borrows heavily from MMOs unlike its predecessor. Travel and exploration has been dumbed down to the point where there is almost always a warp point immediately outside of your quest goal, which is now written down neatly in an organized list (so you don't forget) located underneath your new minimap that details all quest points and portals before you reach them (so you don't get lost). A crafting system has been implemented (OH JOY!) where you have to legitimately pay your blacksmith over and over to skill up, then pay him again to craft things with materials that you provide by breaking down magic items. Combat is usually too easy, and tends more like grinding than actual gameplay. Even the biggest most intimidating enemies are laughably easy to kill most of the time and become little more than a time barrier between you and the next boss. Bosses are actually pretty good fights, they don't seem to rely on enchantments as much as D2 did and each boss has quite a few well planned out tricks up their sleeves. I'm sure the fights would be very entertaining if you weren't rubberbanding all over the map and spamming your potion button because your roommate decided to download a porno.

Overall it isn't anywhere near a good enough game to save itself from its unbelievably poor design decisions and DRM, and it certainly doesn't live up to the Diablo name.

Always online, if BLIZZARD decides one day to take the servers off-line. You are never going to play Diablo again.

This is an ONLINE game, with an ONLINE community and Auction house system, it was never intended to be played offline and Blizzard told you that years ago. If you bought it for single player offline you should have done your research before hand, too bad. The 10-13 million of us that play WoW won't have a problem with that. No character customization -- what do you want to see? When you are armoured up you can see faces, not to mention the fact you can't see faces because the characters are small -- which is exactly why Blizzard removed the customization. As for skill point distribution, Blizzard are getting away from that in WoW, why should that step backwards with their newest game and give you talent trees to fill out when you are just going to go to a website for the "best" build. It's up to you to figure out the best build. At the end of the day everyone looks at the critics scores, not the hater scores. Expand

Blizzard probably won't give 2 sh**ts about reviews like this, when Critics scores are in the 90's (what a shocker...a mainstream game with high scores...), but maby we can help the next guy buying this game to know what do expect. And if you expect painfully simplified Diablo 2 that you can't play offline or in Lan, with features that are just useless(auction house in a non MMORPG game like this is like putting McDonalds onto Greenland...sure, you CAN do it, but why the F** would you?).
Oh and, did I mention that they reduced the numbes of coop players to 4?
Oh and there is no PvP arena(yet).
It seems that Blizzard's definiton of evolution is way off. Diablo to Diablo 2 was actual, no BS progress, and the players recognised it. Diablo 2 to Diablo 3 is a missfire wich will(in this world full of unfairness) still bring Blizzard a billion dollars, so they can make Diablo 4, a first true "no player input game"...

Apart from that though, it is still a fun game. Servers were messy the first couple days, but that is to be expected in such an anticipated game like this. People are way too quick in whining about the servers being down as you can't predict how stable servers are going to be no matter how much you prepare for it which is what people fail to realize. They probably could have kept the open beta going longer and got more data for it to use for release day, but I'm sure after a week of it being released, everything will settle down and will be fine from there on out.

I don't like how the game is only 4 acts long. For a game that has been in development for this long, you would think they would try to squeeze as much as they could into this game and throw in at least 5 total acts. Hopefully an expansion won't be too far off and we won't have to wait too long for it.

At least they should revamp the runes to be applied automatically based on lvl up and to inherit the benefits for each instead of having like 8 or so runes to choose from.
I am content with the visuals in the game. I just hope they have built into the engine support for larger resolutions than the 1920x1080 my monitor supports. Unlike Diablo2 that is limited in it's resolution. There are a few instances where the viewing angle dosen't quite do a proper job, but for most of the game I don't have a problem with it.
I don't like the music in game, while that is a subjective topic, I miss some more grand tunes in the game.
I find the gameplay smooth (apart from the skills), but I miss the ability to put down my attribute points. On the other hand if it gets to the same uselessnes as in D2LoD (just stacking in 2, and no I'm not a good D2 player) I don't mind the way they have done it. The difficulty in the game is more balanced than what I experienced in D2. I find it a good thing that you don't get a nightmare act1 you can nearly just run though as opposed to D2.

If you take into account Blizzards understatement of ppl that wanted to play, the rating would be more like '2' but I'm not basing my score on that.4283 of 5000 characters remaining. Though Blizzard should give all launchday players something for their troubles signing in. Wasen't World of Warcraft: Cataclysm enough, like the other WoW expansions that launchday needs more capacity to support the players? As I couldn't sign in to D3, I also didn't have access to SC2 or WoW as the Battle.net log in server was down.

The graph and character look great and the music is pleasing, but I just fell this is not the same game I played a decade ago. Skill trees are taken away and skill slots are overly simplified. Even though Blizzard moved several ideas from WoW to this sequel, I am just not inspired or excited. I removed the game from my computer on the 3rd day after launch without second thought. I wonder if I am too old to appreciate the new concepts or maybe I am too picky. Who knows. Anyways, if you look forward to finding old good time from this game, you might be disappointed but if you are WoW addicted and have lots of money, purchase it right away to enjoy similar entertainment. This is the type of game that Blizzard should have killed and started over again. Sure, it may gross 3-4 million sales this year. I also won't buy their games without reading reviews anymore. Blizzard now feels like an average game developer to me, and that is because they released a product that sucks. If I could return it, I would. Of course, this review ignores the DRM issues, which many more people are upset about. Expand

I have about 15 hours logged in this game been playing around with the wizard, and although I was a D1, and D2 fan I think this is a great installment in the series. The voice acting and visuals could certainly be toned up a great bit but that's something i can look past. Overall I think this is a good game with a 1 large flaw, an absolutely HORRID launch.

I suffered the install and server errors as everyone else, and truthfully, it was not that big of a deal. As of now all of those issues have been fixed, or you can find the info needed on Blizzards support site to get you up and running. I have a friend that has found out how to run it on Ubuntu already as well. I think the beginning of the game is slow, which if very friendly to new comers to the series. When it comes to customization, there are many ways to make your character feel like your own. At higher levels you have to choose what abilities you will use to bring the pain to the hosts of Hell, so not all Barbarians will be running around with a whirlwind all the time. Plus I love the fact that if I don't feel like some skills are working, I can change it up and figure out what works for me. Customization options are endless depending on the gear you use. If you want to stack an attribute, then level up your blacksmith and make a bunch of rare items until you get what you are looking for, or head to the AH. Who cares if I can't choose to distribute a few "skill points" every level? That just slows down the fun of bashing 20 hellions skulls to a pile of mush. Graphics are a non issue. I have a powerful computer running 2 video cards. The game at max settings is not using all the resources available, but it still looks great. Torchlight's graphics are not spectacular, but they don't need to be for the genre to be fun. I really like the artwork, and environments. The sound does a great job of drawing you in. When I got to act two, I had a feeling of vertigo at first because of the environment, so I think they did a great job there. I do not think the lack of "next generation" graphics is a deal breaker for this game. It is not like they need to be using the latest unreal engine. I have have a Barbarian to level 22, and I can't wait to get back on. I find D3 a more than great title to share the Diablo name. I would not wait for the starter version on this one. Expand

Are you liars or high? Did you play the starter edition? Even with a twink mage, knewing exactly what to to, I "rushed" Act I in 4 hours. And after that it starts to get hard!

"Unworthy sequel", "lame story": Act I alone has more surprises, dialogue and background info than the hole D2! Maybe your memory is a bit blurred. And yes: I played D1 and D2 and loved both.

Technical issues: Come on, it's day one of the most-preordered game ever. Sure, they might have underestimated the mass of players, but they seem to manage now at least halfwy decent. But all the people in the forum crying about fraud, refund and class action obviously never witnessed any launch process.

Graphics: It's an artistic decision, not a technical error! And it is dark, moody and bloody gory, what more do you want? Ultra-realistic chars with bump-mapping and customizable noses and hair? What for? You want to annihilate masses of monsters, not play the Sims! And it looks worse than D2? Get glasses! Did you play it recently?

Pay-to-win: Are you serious? Every jackass in ANY game can buy his way to win. And Blizzard just wants in on the share. And they dont offer any equip on their own, the just let people sell their stuff. No added items, just what was regularly dropped. What is the problem? If uber-item A gets dropped and is sold from player X to Y - what do you care? There will be no eSport PVP. And there will be no "character-selling", so shut up you morons.

Skills, attributes: I don't cry over the old system. Forcing a player to invest another 100 hours, just because he spent some attributes wrong or chose the wrong skills is just cruel and a time sink. If you think, that it is some kind of merit, that's you're problem, but I have a real life and I don't want to waste my time on re-rolling. And D2 had only a few viable builds, which everyone copied off each other. In D3 you can at least experiment without penalty and they kept the interest in every skill alive with the different runes. So every skill has a potential to be used in the endgame, not only a few. SUre, there are no freaky extreme builds possible right now, but in D2 they weren't also until D2X und runewords. Who knows, what Blizz plans for D3X.

DRM: I'm not a fan, but this is the age we live in. Get used to it! At least, the don't mess in your system and kernel layer like EA, but just require online. And yes, it's a coop game! Always was, so grow a pair. And it will put an end to duping and PVP killbots and whatnot. So I am happy about storing my char on their servers. Who needs LAN? Do you seriously want to schlepp everybody's PC into one place like the old times?

Is it divinity in cans? Probably not. Is it a fun and addictive game? Hell yeah! As fun as D2? Equal, if not more for me.

In the end, I would have given it a 9 of 10, but since there are some many unfair 0 out there, just because people are pissed off by technical issues or disappointed by their ridiculously high expectations, a 100 of 10 seems appropriate.

Damn it, reading these reviews really got me worked up, an now it is 5am.

I was a big Diablo II fan 12 years ago, and I have waited for this title for a long time. Besides the expected launch day server issues (which I did expected Blizzard to be better about), the biggest legitimate sounding complaints I saw that people were bringing up over and overI was a big Diablo II fan 12 years ago, and I have waited for this title for a long time. But after reading all negative user reviews about this game, I almost dropped this much anticipated title. Besides the expected launch day server issues (which I did expected Blizzard to be better about), the biggest legitimate sounding complaints I saw that people were bringing up over and over were:

    1. Streamlined Stat leveling, every character will have the same end build, not as customizable friendly.
    2. Short story game (people claiming the story mode lasting only anywhere from 2 to 8 hours)
    3. Cartoonish art style, not dark fantasy like the previous games were.
    4. Pay to win auction houses cheapening the game.

Well I decided to get the game in the end and see check the validity of these complaints, and let me tell you right now, they are for the most part unfounded.

    1. The abilities have been streamlined a bit, in the sense that you can no longer choose which abilities to pick when you level up, and you also do not distribute stat points for your character. I originally thought this would be a big grip for me in this game, cause I loose the ability to focus on particular builds and thus play style. I have found that this is not the case. With each ability came the options of augmenting them with different rune stones. These aren't stat boasting number effects, but legitimate ability changes, I still felt unique playing my wizard class with other wizards in my group, going for a tankier defensive setup with crystal shelled diamond skin, orbiting arcane orbs, and wave of force compared with my friend choosing a artillery striker setup. Throw in the different loots, and even aesthetic clothing dye and banner customization, you can totally feel unique and different if you want to.

    2. The short story thing I feel is hands down not true. I am a bit more completionist when it comes to checking all the treasure and breaking all the containers for loot then your average player, but there is no way you will finish this game in less then 8 hours unless you are straight up running from point A to point B without stopping or doing anything in between. I finished Act I and am mid Act II right now, and I have clocked probably ard 12 hours in this game thus far. There is a lot of meat in this game, especially if you are willing to explore a bit.

    3. In terms of art, I think Blizzard did not disappoint. I thought it would be a complete WoW fest, it is not. Yes, the characters and world are more exaggeratedly proportioned then representational realism and are more "colorful". But honestly, it did not distract from the experience for me at all. At no time in the game did I go, oh that looks like too friendly or too kiddy for a mature game. There is so much polish in this thing, especially when it comes to visual effects. Enemies will die differently depending on the attacks you used, burning to a crisp when you use lightning bolts, or have limbs and heads fly off when you chop them with swords. Large columns will crumple down when you hit them, dealing damage to enemies, and everything just feels very very smooth.

    4. In terms of the real money auction house, I cannot really say cause its not open yet. But its my opinion, that you the player, play this game to have fun. If you want to spend real money to stomp bots and that's how you have fun, fine with me, I will still enjoy the game because the reward is the journey toward achieving self imposed goals. Whether Blizzard is cashing in with this move or not, does not augment or hinder my ability to enjoy this game.

But, don't take my word for any of this, if you are curious about this game, pick up a demo or guest pass or something. Don't take other people's word for it, try it yourself and see. I did, and I am glad I did.

A very sad continuation of the Diablo franchise. The visual design evokes thoughts of a better game, Torchlight. In the Diablo verse though, that just doesn't work. The visual design evokes thoughts of a better game, Torchlight. In the Diablo verse though, that just doesn't work. The game becomes a visual parody of its previous installments and setting. The cartoonish style only serves to ruin any of the oppressive feelings it tries to conjure in deep dungeons and completely removes any feeling of threat when you face those cute little giant demon bosses. What could have been a visceral experience is now a slightly gory children's show. I'll give the animations a nod, though. They seem to be top notch and indicative of the quality we could have gotten elsewhere too.

I won't speak much about the sound. It's quite good and holds its own.

The gameplay however... oh dear the gameplay. I don't know how to say this without my brain trying to herniate itself. They managed to dumb down Diablo. I didn't know it was even possible. One of the simplest and most straightforwards games in the world got dumbed down to anancephalic levels. They have completely removed stat allocation and skilltrees. You don't make a single choice throughout the entire game. Every skill, every rune, every slot and everything is handed to you as you level up. No choices to make, nothing. They try to make it seem to matter by restricting you to only using six at a time but when you can exchange the skills and runes in seconds it becomes completely worthless. A level 30 Wizard will be exactly the same as every last level 30 wizard out there. Every Barbarian is the same as all other Barbarians and nothing will distinguish you from the rest except how much money you've spent on the auction house. Blizzard once set the standard for Hack n Slash. Now they lowered the bar until it was just discarded entirely in favor of a pillow on the ground. The game is now too easy, too short, too dumbed down and frankly too bright and fluffy. This is not Diablo. Blizzard has failed us.

Pay 2 Win. Insane always-on DRM. Completely dumbed down gameplay. Cartoonish style. A hideous game.

I keep seeing garbage about 'setting the bar high' and other nonsense. First off, it is too easy, and I'm not going to be the only one saying that. Second, it's boring. Enemies throw nothing new at you. Third, there are limited combinations. Supposedly it gets harder the second time through and even harder the third time. My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
