Elitism, absurd hardware specs to run a game at his "full potential", DRM, poor game design and many other issues have almost killed pc gaming. Why should i bother about Diablo 3 when i can get Dark Souls on console?

The game, for the little bit I was able to play before one of the several server crashes, is exactly as you'd expect it to be. The 'dungeon crawler' genre is pretty well finalized, and this is just another entry in that genre. The previous Diablo games were instrumental in defining this game type, but at least they gave the option of single player with no DRM-based server control. It was a different menu button that separated single and multi. Now greed and corporate idiocy has combined them, and clearly pissed off the people that they depend on for revenue. But hey, you already got money from most of us.. so who's really the sucker. I'd keep writing but now I expect to get booted from every webpage I visit for more than 10 minutes due to a 3006 error.

I am stuck as I (along with 2 million peoples) was idiot enough to preorder it. I have played it for almost 10 hours and for that I had to either wait to login or backtrack for lost savegame due to connection loss for almost 2 hours total! Mind blowing I know! Every big company makes a product that marks the downfall of its fanbase and slow but steady decline. I am sure that Diablo III is that product as it has alienated me, an 6 years devoted fan of Blizzard. Perhaps I will get that Torchlight game others are talking about. Believe me, I would love to live in a world where this game is a 3.6, but it's simply not. It's polished, fun, and what you would expect from Blizzard. You don't have to look up a build on the internet and make sure you put the exact right points in all their places, and feel remorseful if you didn't. You just bash demon skulls, which is why you play Diablo... So, let the flamers flame, It's still a good game!

Also, the errors are almost all attributed to the servers, which is just something we should expect with an online required game. They will even out after a day or two. Kiddies these days expect perfection from everything. If it isn't purrrfect on day one they Flame On, it's ridiculous. Most of the people who rated 0 on here will still play and love the game. Do I fully agree with the DRM? No, but it or any other feature in the game a surprise? No, exactly as f-ing advertised. Quit crying and go play the game!

When I finally started 1 hour after 00.00 (yes, everyone tries to connect, and blizz aint gonna spend 3x more money just for players to be able to log on in the 1st hour of launch. On that note, I don't understand the drm runt, you knew its gonna be there, you knew theres gonna be problem in first few days with servers. Blizz doesnt support piracy and actually is investing some money to fight it), pluses just kept showing in my book. Story, lore and dialogues are very good. Its par with much more serious titles, not just hack and slash (bear in mind that I didn't play dibalo 1 and 2). Graphic is not top notch technically, but artistic impression is fantastic. When you're playing multiplayer, and when you gain some levels, and when you came across some 50 monsters with their abilities, its explosion of colors (in good way) from spells, abilities, blood and gore... excellent, and without any graphical hickups.
there's also good deal of side dungeons (that are not connect to main quest). Another good thing is when you logoff, and then back on later everything resets except main story. Dungeons are not where they used to be (if they are there at all, but there can also be more dungeons than last time), layout is not the same etc., so this adds a lot to replayability . All in all, as someone who didn't play diablo before, and someone who doesn't like hack and slash at all, I have only words of praise for this title. Blizzard didn't disappoint me (again :)). I would give it 9, but seeing all this nerd rage, it's 10, this game deserves much more than 3.6 average

The past few days have shown that Blizzard has changed. The simple lack of being prepared with adequate server capacity and the sheer amount of errors related to in game bugs (templar shield equip), Battlenet issues, language support, etc is just insulting. In addition to this, the fact that many of the game's features were cut from the initial launch (RMAH, PVP, etc) tells me that they had even more time to focus on the core gameplay and to iron out the simple issues of being able to log in. Unfortunately, I have already paid for this game so my boycott of Blizzard will have to wait, but mark my words that I will NEVER buy another product from Blizzard for as long as I live. Expand

I thought that this was troubling because the games should be nothing alike. First let me say that I loved Diablo 2 and I loved WoW. But they are no more similar than Starcraft is to either of them. Attributes, skills, auction house, arena PVP, everyone easily reaching max level cap, and no reasonable reason to make more than 1 of any given character are just some of the similarities to WoW. None of the things I just listed are true of Diablo 2. If you never played Diablo 2 religiously then you will probably enjoy Diablo 3 more than most. But if you are a lover of the Diablo series, then this game is a major disappointment. I'd rather play WoW than play a linear RPG with inferior controls. Well..I was able to play for 10 minutes on launch day (Tueday) before going to work in the morning. Seemed to play smoothly and I even had fun, despite it being the same content from the Beat I played several times. After work I couldn't log in due to blizzard having issues with their servrers. So I went to visit a friend in the hospital for a couple hours. Came back, had some dinner, and couldn't log in for the remainder of the evening. BlizzardCS on Twitter confirmed both times that they were experiencing issues. I understand that blizzard launch games go like this, but I can't even play the game by myself, in solo mode, because of their ridiculous server-side DRM. So basically I paid $60 for a splash screen and numerous log-in errors. So for now I'll give the game a 2, based on the fact that it's been mostly unplayable for the first day of launch...so far. I don't understand how a company who launches three expansion packs to a customer base of 10+ million people (World of Warcraft) can still utterly embarrass themselves like this. They never seem to learn from their mistakes. Once upon a time, Blizzard used to be a game developer I trusted and revered, but every year it's becoming clear to me that money is their number one priority, while their long-standing customer base (probably the most fiercely loyal fanbase in video games at some point...likely not so much anymore) take a backseat. D3 will likely be the last Blizz title I buy. Blizzard gets a massive 1 finger salute for this turd of a launch.

So in Diablo 3 you will likely make 5 characters, which in extreme situations takes roughly 2 days per character to reach level 60. After two weeks of playing you could easily have a max leveled character of each class. Even the most casual gamer will be able to have a max leveled character of each class within a number of weeks. And as we previously discussed due to the "customization" allowed in Diablo 3 each of their characters will be relatively similar to yours in the since that they have all of the same skills readily available for selection. There is no need to recreate characters, no decisions you make in the game are committments, and I don't see where any level of replayability will come from.

Now, please, think again: Blizzard justified the online-thingy placing online features in the SP mode too, at least, not like others which force you to log and check every time, without "feeling" the game as "online". You can like this, or don't, but it's a choice that brought classical online related problems, nothing more or less than that. Next in line "The graphic sucks! It's not like Diablo 2!" of course it isn't. DIII is not like DII in the same way DII was not like Diablo itself, with all the deserts, swamps, mountain etcetera. We all can say there were no "blue colored tendencies" in the first two games, but still, I can't see where it's wrong having them for a start. I myself am a GM for many RPGs, and when I tell a dark story, I don't get upset because my wizard wants to dress yellow, or because somebody describes his/her spell as "colourful", nor do I accuse them to be "WOW themed". Next, again: "The artistic direction is too much like WOW!" okaaay, calm down, let's have a look at Starcraft II. Now, look again. Doesn't it seem like WOW? No? That's because it's setting is Sci-Fi, the artistic idea behind it is pretty much the same. The new Blizzard's artistic direction is this, you like it or you don't, deal with it. I won't dislike a game because it's different from its predecessor. I don't like WOW graphics, true, but that's mainly because I have a low poly model for my PC right in my face, and not looking at it from a distance. Next: "It's all flat and automatic! No skill trees or customizable characteristics!" do you hear yourselves? Have you even tried to make something different from a Hammerdin or some other somebody-else-made builds in DII? If you did, does the lack of customizable characteristics upset you? Thanks. I personally made a strange face when I understood that skills could be changed only through Skill Runes, but this WILL necessary lead to a multitude of different builds, since one WON'T be overpowered than another, so no more Hammerdins, and no more lame builds. Have fun slashing and killing with your personal build, and get away with the loot. More: "The story is flat, dialogues are below standard!" again, think of Diablo II. Do you remember particularly epic moments beside cutscenes? This is Diablo, it's an ARPG, it's mostly about casting, slashing and stepping on your foes' corpses, Has this stopped you from playing DII two, three or more times in a row? I don't think so. Just a final thought, the "art" in DIII is incredible, the way they played with the knowledge that the game would be seen from one perspective only in the making of scenery, effects, etcetera is beyond imagination, and I love it, with its colours and its "notsomuchlikethefirsttwoonesness". It is okay if you don't like something, somebody wants to shoot at me because I don't like the Uncharted franchise for an example, but this won't keep me from giving a 10 to a game I waited so much for, and I love, even if it has moved in another direction from his roots. I give diablo 3 a 0/10 because in my opinion it has none of the fundamental aspects that i loved in Diablo 2. There is now leveling ladder and understandably so because it only takes the dedicated player around 2 days to get to level 60. There is no PK'ing and there be no PK'ing. Blizzard will add a WoW styled arena PVP system at some point, but that leaves me feeling like I'm playing LoL rather than Diablo. Maybe I'm a bit strange, but I enjoyed trading in Diablo 2. Yes it took effort to find someone that was looking for the items you had available. And yes it took more time to find someone that was looking for those items that had something to offer that you were interested in. But I am sorry, I don't play games casually, and I don't want the games I play to be made for casual players. The inclusion of a real money auction house destroys a barter system and opens for the potential of newbs "buying wins." To me choosing which skills you're going to use is not costumizing a character. All level 60 Barbs will have the same skills and play styles available to them. In diablo 3 you will create no more than 5 characters, unlike Diablo 2 where you might have made as many as 100 characters if you found a new neat item or had an off the wall build idea. No attribute placement, no skill tree, and no committment to any decision that you make in-game simply prevents any sort of replayability in my eyes. Diablo 2, released more than a decade ago, supported 8 players in-game. How they chose to reduce that number in half for a 2012 release date is beyond me. Most people have more than 3 friends they would like to play with. Beyond that with only 3 other people to interact with it reduces the sense of community. The chances of finding like minded people or a clan to join are significantly hendered purely by the numbers of people you'll meet in a game. Because we all know that bnet 2.0 certainly is isolated and does not help anyone find a sense of community.

So there you have it. TLDR; Diablo 3 has 0 of my favorite features from Diablo 2. So it gets a 0/10 from my review.

They tried to think of everything people could do and removed our freedom. They treat us like criminals. There is no freedom. There is no point playing. Banal **** Boring. Carebear Design. They denied their original target audience. What we loved about the game, they removed and changed. They changed things as if we didnt liked the things that were in the previous games. They forced everyone to cycle through abilities instead of using just the cool ones we like over and over. They removed the power of the gems. Made crappy worthless gems. They made it so there is no meaningful choice. Everyone is a clone of each other within their classes. Customization is a gimmick. They tried to convince us that customization occurs based on gear! Thats not what we wanted. They made it so nobody can fail. There is no true feeling of victory either. They removed the freedom. They removed open world griefing and PVP. They removed Godly broken characters. Players cannot aspire to godlike immortality through build and gear. They capped power and mitigation of difficulty curve. They removed specializing for more power. They tried to balance everything. They removed absurd levels of magic find. They made it so we cant have some builds and classes that are more suited for magic find such as the sorcerer was. They removed rushing. They force us through the experience and content. They removed repetition of the same areas and boss rushing. Trying to force us to play their way. They removed absurdly hard to reach high levels that differentiated pro players from losers who kept dieing and going back in the XP ladder. They changed the art style. Cartoon game. They added online only DRM. They destroyed their game by offering pay to win through real money auction house so that they can gain money. I hate Diablo 3. Jay Wilson and other developers/designers ruined the game I loved. Expand

A 3.5, in absurd. If this were the first game of the series, all the nerd boys (and girls) would raving about how great this game is. A large portion of complaints come from the game being online only. We're at a point where damn near everyone has internet. If you don't have internet, it's probably because you haven't paid your bills and shouldn't be buying new games. Now once you accept the fact that it's online only and most everyone has internet all the time on their computer, you'll realize that you can see your friends online and your friends can see you online. This allows you to instantly jump in and play with your friends. Have you ever been to a LAN party and had this happen? "Well i'd host the server, but greg and steve can't connect to me, but if greg hosts I can connect, but joe can't. But if joe hosts every can connect." You spend so much time figuring out who can join who. Blizzard is the server, everyone can connect to it without issue.( Except right now )

The visual could be somewhat darker than they are, but they are still great.

I will agree that some things in the game have been dumbed down, but a lot of those dumbled down things really were just ways to prevent you from being able to play the game. For example, after 4 hours of game play, I didn't have to identify one item. So that means i don't have to buy a ton of identify scrolls once i get back to town and manually identify each item while my friends stand around and wait for me. Town portals don't need scrolls. Those scrolls were cheap and wasted inventory. Honestly, there are only 3 features that make this game easier. Teleporting to your friends from town, check points when you die, and not dropping all your items when you die. I would like to see check points go away and items dropping at later difficulty, but its not that big of an issue. Complain once you think inferno is easy.

The skill tree and points system is gone. The vast majority of players likely looked up online where they should put their stats. So most everyone followed the "optimum stats" build. Powers are unlocked at levels. I don't know about other people, but almost everytime I unlocked a power, I was like, "That's awesome!".

But.. but.. the servers won't log me in. Deal with it, it's a game. Blizzard will fix the issues quickly. Take a shower and go get some fresh air, maybe a sandwich too.

Diablo III isn't the best game ever, but its fun. Accept it as a fun game, because once you do, you'll enjoy it.

I haven't once had that "where the heck am I supposed to be going?!!" moment, which is a huge plus. Cons: The need to be connected to the internet to play is big downside of this game is a big downside. It wasn't something I knew about until just before I purchased it, and by then it was too late to curb my New Game Lust. When I'm at home, it won't be an issue, but I bought a new laptop just for this game, so I could take it with me on trips and such. That appears to have been a waste of money. As for the game itself, I am a bit disappointed in the skill leveling system. In the previous Diablo game, you earned skill points which you could invest in the skills you wanted. It resulted in highly individualised characters, which was a big draw of Diablo 2. Diablo 3 seems to give every character the same abilities as every other character of that class. At any time you can just change which abilities you have equipped and you'll be exactly the same as the next Barbarian or Witch Doctor. This is an aspect that severly HURTS replayability of this game.

On the whole, it's still Diablo, a game I've loved since I was in High School. It just seems like a step down from Diablo 2. Maybe someday they'll come out with a Diablo 2.5, with updated graphics and a new character class or something (and no weird online-only DRM). Until then, this will have to do.

Potentially great title, turned into a complete piece of crap. Can't play solo without playing online...all the time. And their servers are down...lately, all the time. If I wanted to play an MMO with plenty of server downtime, I would have bought WOW instead. I'm off to replay Torchlight, pick up Torchlight 2, and ask my credit card company how to get my money back.

After a few frustrating attempts to play immediately after launch, I've now played about 10 hours of Diablo III, and it is really fantastic. The game is easy to pick up, difficult to master, and impossible to stop playing! Once everyone calms down about the rough launch, Diablo III will be a clear contender for 2012 Game of the Year.

Overpriced like all other Blizzard products.
I wonder will they charge you for another $60 for +10 levels expansion with couple of legendary items each year. 30% real money from AH will goes to Blizzard.

Graphics look like wow did 8 years ago, gameplay is dumbed down from Diablo 2, and the always-online DRM nonsense has caused me to lose numerous hours of playtime even while playing single-player. On a sidenote this game from what I can tell does not have random loot as when my game crashed I reset and played through a dungeon again and found much of the same loot but this might be a bug. Also finished game on normal explored and did some side quests in about nine hours and a friend is already on hardcore end of act 2 hasn't died yet and unless he got skills over night means this game is too easy so yeah awesome bliz really sets the standards for how to not make a game Expand

Now I am only 16 at this point, but I have been taking my sweet time, listening to the lore, and enjoying the timed mini-event, multiple bosses, and trying several different builds with one character. To calm everyones nerves, the game is incredibly long regardless what these other very angry people say about the game because of the servers. I am at the end of Act I and I am over 9 hours in. There is alot of content and alot of variation, crafting has been significantly improved and it gives you a reason to hold on to all the blues you find. Item variation is plentiful and you will find alot of different abilities and stats on different items you find.

The story again regardless what people say is incredibly deep and well thought out, I have enjoyed the cinematics and they done great job with the voice acting and lore. The music and sound is spot on and sounds are crisp and easy to differentiate depending on what skills you are using, who you are attacking, ect. That brings me to the graphics, this a top down RPG, it is not supposed to have mind blowing graphics, it is supposed to be able to handle 300-400 objects on the screen, while particle effects and animations are going on. The gameplay took the best from D2 and eliminated all the unneccessary micro managing and unneccessary attributes, what we are left with here is just a game that is incredibly addicting and fun to play. There will be people who will spend 5+ years on this just like D2 because of the item progression, AH, and crafting alone. There are a few minor bugs and some framerates hiccups, but overall Blizzard has built a worthy sequel and regardless the outlandish and untrue things these other people are saying on here, this is the 100% truth.

Let me get the controversial things out of the way first. Hundreds of people on here gave this game a 0/10 for a number of reasons: You have to be online to play, DRM, and the Real Money Auction House.

The people complaining about the always online/DRM thing have a point, but I personally don't mind that much. Diablo is a game best played online anyway and as far as DRM goes, there has been worse. At least you aren't limited to how many computers you can install the game on and you don't have to jump through hoops to download it. You just can only play on one computer at a time. Unlike most DRM, this doesn't punish people who purchased the game legally. Yes, it meant that servers were overburdened during the midnight release, but since then, it hasn't really been a problem.

As for the Real Money Auction House, yes it allows for people to "buy power". However, this was going to happen anyway, as Diablo II showed us. There were still going to be people who would put up Diablo III items on eBay or on other auction websites. Up until now, Blizzard has wasted a ton of effort trying to put a stop to this practice, but they've just accepted that they can't. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Additionally, if this new system works, Blizzard can keep Diablo III running without implementing subscriptions.

Now, I can imagine people disliking these things, but as I said in my Portal 2 review, these aren't good enough reasons to rate a game a 0/10.

0/10 should be reserved for the worst game you could imagine. Can you imagine a worse game than Diablo III? Yes? Then it doesn't deserve a 0/10. You might argue that you gave it a 0/10 for being "unplayable", but what you really mean is that it was unplayable for the first hour or so it was live. Get over it.

As for my feelings on the game, I think that it's a worthy successor to the series. It's not perfect. I do wish that you could play the game offline and just went online to verify your Battle.net account once. Playing single player online seems like a waste. I also feel like the skill system is way too streamlined.

I think the presentation is vastly improved this time around. All of the characters talk and it feels more natural than ever before. I think Blizzard took a few cues from Bioware games and Bioshock. The flow of the game is a lot smoother.

The dungeon crawling can be a bit repetitive and so far it isn't very challenging. Perhaps it's because I'm still on Normal difficulty or because I've played Diablo games for most of my life, but health orbs drop way too often and I haven't died once yet. I'm hoping the difficulty curve ramps up significantly.

The environment effects are cool and occasionally useful. The story is compelling and intelligent. The combat is a lot of fun. The bad guys have a lot of variety. The artisan/crafting system is very robust, even if it doesn't have the cool element of discovery that Diablo II had (I still think the Horadric Cube partially inspired the crafting table in Minecraft).

It isn't a perfect game, but it is a very good game and it always bothers me when whining children on Metacritic spam overly-negative reviews just because of one or two aspects of a game that they collectively dislike and they want to "send a message" by bombing the Metacritic score.

Sorry to say it, but if you care enough about a game to buy it at midnight on a weekday and then rage about it on Metacritic, you probably like it more than you'd care to admit. You may be frustrated with the game, and that's fine and should be accounted for in your reviews, but frustration implies that you want to love the game, but these issues get in the way of that (kind of like with ME3). And is a bit of frustration with an otherwise great game enough to give it a 0/10? I personally don't think so.

At first I got familiar with the errors for full servers and when I managed to get into the game I was fighting with the power called "server lag". In single player you face not only Diablo and his minions, but also Blizzard and it's stubbornness. Due to the constant internet connection requiered to play the game both in SP and MP ( the DRM in other words) Diablo 3 really made an impact on the gaming community and fans ... a bad one, unfortunately. Random people from random games getting dropped out of the games which they play with friends over in MP, people getting thrown back in the main menu because of connection lost thus making SP hard to even progress in story, since you were forced to re-fight the whole zone to get to where you were before. But enough about connection issues.
As for game performance, details and etc. : When it comes to polished games Blizzard knows how to deliver - close to 0 bugs in about 10 hours of gameplay (enough to finish off normal difficulty). Graphics wise the game is not really a gem for the eyes to gaze upon. As every other Blizzard game even an old PC would be able to run it smoothly and because of that even on MAX details and etc. the game is just about average compared to most modern day made games. The art is somewhat different from what I expected but that's just my opinion. In terms of audio and sound Blizzard has made some decent soundtracks for the different environments and cutscenes which is always a plus if you want to get the player in a certain mood or help him understand the depth of the atmosphere around him. The game as overall runs smooth and with no random drops in frames per second or any kind of audio bugs and etc.
Gameplay: Now this is where I am going on a rampage to criticize the game ...
First off - game was made by some of the devs behind the making of World of Warcraft and thus the game is just made plain simple ... When leveling up you don't get stat points, nor skill points to customize your build of your character, the only thing that makes you more different from any other person out there are the stats of your gear. It's strange how when you see the "LEVEL XX" above your character you start thinking "oh boy, how should I distribute my points" and then you remember - "oh ye, I can't do anything". Stats are automatically leveled up and spells get unlocked so you can't really do anything at all. You could perhaps differ from other people by customizing your spells with spell glyphs but then again - everyone will obviously select the ones who are best in slot. So far everything is World of Warcraft similar, isn't it ? Moving on - crafting. At first I was really hyped behind all this crafting of gems and items, but after I got familiar by spending gold to level those professions I once again got this though in my head "isn't this the same thing as the crafting in WoW?" ... and it really is. Auction house was added which the Diablo games never really needed. After I got through normal I decided to check the AH and what did I see ... hundreds of useless items flooding it making it a bit irritating.
What else am I missing ... the interface is somewhat what was to be expected modern version of the D2 interface with a little touch of WoW again with those quest tracking and etc. And before I conclude with the review here is what is the most annoying in the game - the limit of players in one MP game is 4, that's right - 4 ! Those that have more than 3 friends with which they want to play together - sorry, you won't be able ... get over it.

Final words to sum everything up: For 60 bucks you get a strictly controlled through DRM game which will requier you to play online your dose of single player action and if you're headed to MP be warned, you can only play with up to 3 of your friends in one game ... that is, of course, if you are ABLE TO CONNECT to the servers. D3 will offer you mediocore graphics and art plus audio and sounds at a decent level which you can run easily even on an older computer. For those such as myself who have tagged along from D1 through D2 in the new D3 you will not see anything "new". Blizzard took 4 years of time to develop a game which is more like Diablo 2 but with modern graphics, audio and interface and added to it useless features such as crafting of items and gear and above all an AH flooded much like World of Warcraft's one - lots of things, most of which not worth even the time to stop and look at them.

As I said in the start - I didn't expect much ... and didn't receive much in the end ... as expected of Blizzard's MMORPG devs - they don't know how to deliver to the hack and slash fans of the Diablo franchise ...

The game story feels more like a low budget fantasy movie and like some short of soap opera and most characters in the game are forgettable D) The gameplay experience and most scenes makes this game seem more like a World of Warcraft variation than a real Diablo sequel with cartoony dated graphics. The game suffers from low quality textures and low polygon characters and poor animations , from the graphics point of view this new so-called Diablo 3 reminds me some old games from 2004-2005 period. For me, regrettably, D3 falls into the latter category. Technically they included many things to prevent this: So much skills and runes and skill combinations, but it doesn't add up to something larger. Encounters are almost always the same (monsters coming in from the front of you) and you beat 'em down, sometimes faster, sometimes slower, repeating the same buttons presses. I don't remember any outstanding encounter. And although there's a lot of different artwork and randomization, the levels through the different acts seemed to be really similar to me. Feels like a checklist of locations you run through, locations that don't really depend on each other. Doesn't anyone remember the character trainers of Diablo 1 and 2? This is huge problem they had to overcome and this is the only solution for player to player interaction. In fairness, before I continue, I have to say that it is hard to innovate with a product with the kind of established formula that made the originals so much fun. It's difficult to walk the line between making changes that are acceptible to new players without cutting elements that were enjoyed by old fans.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like blizzard actually tried.

Diablo 3 is an ok game, its reasonably pretty whilst retaining enough of a dated feel that you feel as if you are still playing the same franchise, and thats it. If players are able to complete the game in under 7 hours as they are reportedly doing, then its a safe bet to say that there hasnt been a significant increase in the amount of actual content...

In truth this doesnt feel like a new game. It feels like Diablo 2, rigged to work on direct x 9 at a slightly higher resolution, with voice actors and a cash shop.

And there we come to the crux of it - I already get the impression this was less about the game, and more about making money from commission on item sales. If it takes off, I'm sure blizzard will take the knowledge learned from this product test, and apply it elsewhere.

The most impressive aspect about this title for me, at least, was seeing how badly the gaming community has been pre-conditioned to accept what was an abysmal product launch with terrible community management, where in other industries directors would be fired, stocks dropped and people held publicly accountable. Even more concerning the fact that the community management seemed to rely on fans to shout down the backlash from the people who tried to highlight this very issue..

All in all, its an ok game, a nice reminder of earlier years, but not worth the heafty price tag. Caveat Emptor dear reader, do not be fooled into believing this is anything other than another corporate cash cow for an already highly skilled company of "milkmen"...

Gameplay is, once you get to login, fluid and addictive. At least with my barbarian so far. The cinematics are also great and really help with the immersion.

I only made this account after being baffled by this extremely low score and I'm giving it a 10 in attempt to balance things out. Though I might have given it a 10 anyways.

Oh and also, I see people mentioning EA in their "reviews". I guess this only shows how uninformed and non-credible this people are; or should I say, "butthurt" after buying a game without, somehow, knowing you have to be online all the time. I understand the frustration of not being able to log in on the first day, but hell, if you managed to wait 11 years, you can wait for another day or two until things balance themselves out.

Well, this was my first and probably last review, if you can call it that. Now I'll go back to playing this excellent game while you express your inability to login, rather than the quality of the game itself with your negative reviews.

I've been a Diablo fan since the first game,.. i played D2 until my eyes bled. Unfortunately, anyone hoping this would be a good continuation, are going to be sadly disappointed. For those in this boat, coming from Diablo 2, what you need to do is forget this is a Diablo game and instead consider it a new experience. Whether that new experience is for you, is going to be a personal thing. What I would say is that the release has been so badly managed it's shocking. It's been so bad, that the game has been utterly destroyed by the press based heavily on the login experience. Which actually IS as bad as people make out. My experience was that at 5PM when everyone got home from work at the same time, the servers got hammered. At which point I managed to get in 3 times in 4 hours. All 3 times the connection was unstable and I got booted within 15 minutes. Which wasn't enough time for my friends to get a connection so we could play together. So All in all, I over a 4 hour period I played for 15 minutes, which was mostly just waiting about. Joyous.

Eventually we did get a game in, at about 11pm, when everyone in Europe had gone to bed. For an hour or two. And we kind of enjoyed it.

I'd say that there is also a misconception going around about the length of the game. Don't get me wrong, this is no WoW sized game, but it is much bigger than you would believe reading the reviews. People have quoted finishing the game in 2 hours. You'll only do that if you ignore absolutely all dialogue and run from start to finish as quickly as you possibly can. Ignoring all side quests, and avoiding killing most things. You can do this in almost all games. Look for speed runs on youtube, games that took the average gamer 30+ hours will have speed runs of 1 hour or less. And most of these people are just trying to look l33t. Don't play the game like this, you'll make a mediocre experience worse. Play it properly, explore, see things, do things.

I'm giving this 5/10, I'm trying to look past the login issues and see the bigger picture with that score, it would have been lower.

To the relief of Diablo afficionados, the third installment is very much a successor to the previous games with gameplay and graphics very reminiscent of Diablo 2. The very similar level and mob design seem a bit too much of a deja vu scenario though, and could have benefited from a tad bit different direction, in my opinion.

The story seems a bit burdened by the predecessors as well, since it shares too much of the same characters and locations from the previous games. Many of the NPCs make an appearance, like Deckard Cain, Leoric or Lachdanan. As for the other characters, you'll bump into your run-of-the-mill merchants and blacksmiths that will sell you goodies and repair your gear, characters that are vital to the storyline, and the commoners, standing there chatting away.

As you progress through the game, you'll be given the option of hiring henchmen, who are limited in what they can do but are a pretty cool nonetheless, since they can interact with your character, making the world feel more alive, and are a nice diversion as you roam through the dungeons by yourself.

The hack 'n slash aspect of the game is as good as ever, and killing and looting mobs feels very satisfying. The enemies themselves are colored by threat just like in the previous games, with the regulars being the weakest and the bosses being the toughest. As far as AI goes, there are some nice mechanics going on, like rare mobs pulling the unaware player straight into another group of enemies. The boss fights are very enjoyable to fight through as well, so no complaints there.

Another nice addition is the semi destructible environment, in which you have the option to use various world objects to your advantage, such as dropping chandeliers on unaware mobs standing under it.

The character classes are fun to play and seem very well balanced, though the limited character customization is a bit disappointing. You have two basic attack modes executed by left and right clicking, with up to four additional skills, such as healing yourself, or blinding enemies for a short period of time.

Don't have too much to say about the graphics department, since I've found that it does the job and makes for some very decent ambience and atmosphere. Again, there's some very heavy cues from its predecessors, and some levels feel like you've seen them before. The character art is well done though, and I've found myself admiring the various animations.

The sound and music are good as well; the coin drop ka-ching sounds very satisfying, as do death-throes and other, background sounds. The music is good, although I would've preferred a different track for Tristram than the remixed version of the original theme.

The biggest issue I've got with the game is the ridiculous DRM protection scheme. I can understand that piracy is a problem and that it needs to be dealt with at some level or another, but kicking your paying customers in the nutsack is a recipe for disaster. I could understand this scenario if this was an MMORPG, but forcing the player to have an always on Internet connection for the single player campaign seems too much of a stretch. This really seems more like a management decision though, and blame shouldn't be directed at the developers. In this sense, yeah, I very much liked the game and think it's a very polished experience, but can't give any more points for the sole reason mentioned above.

A backwards step in the skill system (an illusion of choice, no stake in your advancement, nothing particularly good to look forward to). The UI is average (the skill screen(s) are hopeless). The graphics are far from what you'd expect today (they're mass audience MMO quality, i.e. lowest common denominator). RealToo easy (the flow is terrible, it results in a very boring experience). Real money trade affects all players whether they use it or not (why work hard when the guy next to you had the money to spend on something much better than your equipment, for no time spent?). I clock 200-360ms ping .. in singleplayer. Loot is individual among coop players (this is a bad thing - you no longer have a sense of shared achievement, you have less connection to those you're playing with). All the goddamn fog (why?!)

Conclusion: Diablo 3 will never reach anywhere near the cult status of Diablo 2. You're best off going back to that golden classic or waiting for Torchlight 2.

The forced online aspect is an outrage and takes control away from the consumer, a trend in gaming that needs to be stopped. The fact that it is possible to buy items for real money is an insult to players world wide. Blizzard should crash and burn for this one. Do not spend money on this game. Expand

Personaly, i didnt like the attribute leveling, because I mess it up always...Just so happens, that if you want to upgrade your paladin in Travincal, you want fancy shmency armors, but have to drop the dex upgrade. So you get a character that drains stamina like crazy, and cannot hit a damn thing.I didnt like the attribute system. i still haven't played the game, but i know it will be epic.I see no reason not to be.You dont need good graphics to have a good game.I dont care about the internet issues.Blizzard will fix it.For all those that have problem with graphics: Please try ABUSE which is an old game, or Master of Orion 2, or X-COM UFO: enemy unknown. Those are game with old graphics but EXCELENT gameplay and still my favorite games. Those people that claim that Modern Warfare or call of duty are good games, are just ragekids. D3 is an old school type of game. If you do not like it, don't buy it. Simple. Cheers Expand

People need to really calm down. There are a ton of 0s and 1s and 2s, scores I would reserve for games which are actually defective and don't work. Yeah I was pissed about launch, that wasn't very good of them, but IMO it shouldn't be considered when you're writing a tantrum review. The graphics aren't anything special, but the art direction is pretty decent. I'm not sure what their thinking on graphics was, possibly it was a concern about requirements. Now the key is similarities and differences to d2. The skill system is far more simple which is a shame, since I enjoyed really growing as a character and having the skills stack up. However, this does save me the tens of hours I had to spend reading guides on exactly what skill point allocation you needed to use at every level. This leads to more viable builds, and simpler character progression, but it removes the coolness of things like the hammerdin which took advantage of the stats system to make a spell initially thought to be useless an incredible killing machine. I do like the rune system, which seems like it will allow for some interesting combinations of spells and usages. I think character variety will be mostly about items, and what passives/runes you run with, more than any kind of skill build. The crafting system is intriguing, but I haven't used it enough to comment on how it relates to the endgame. I think the world structure is very similar to Diablo in terms of town and interconnected monster areas. Any complaints of increased linearity I think are due to the fact that you have more story tying together your quests, and actual map marker. You will see a number of people expressing their displeasure by using what I call "review centric cusswords", as in reviews that are their equivalent of cursing out the game; "wow inspired", "linear" "pay to win" etc etc. Is this the greatest game I've ever played? No. Is it a horrible abomination such that diablo would use in his own army? Also no. Since its about impossible to find an unbiasesd review on this page, I would suggest watching gameplay footage and deciding for yourself.

As for you guys writing 0s and 1s, do you really think you're doing anything to the game sales?

This is Diablo mod for Warcraft. It looks like Warcraft (W3 or WoW), characters are like from Warcraft (demon hunter, witch doctor), most of the skills you can trace to Warcraft universe. Skills themselves look ridiculous, and too flashy.
You can't influence character development, you can only chose combination of skills. Was this game made by marketing department of Vivendi/Activision

fun, but not good enough. i loved diablo 1 + 2. this game does not feel like its actually part of the diablo series. it feels like a dumbed down hack and slash. left click the whole time, drink a potion here or there...not enough skill is involved. when (if) you die, you just respawn at the last "checkpoint" with all of your gear, so it doesn't feel like a challenge. the game lacks thefun, but not good enough. i loved diablo 1 + 2. this game does not feel like its actually part of the diablo series. it feels like a dumbed down hack and slash. left click the whole time, drink a potion here or there...not enough skill is involved. when (if) you die, you just respawn at the last "checkpoint" with all of your gear, so it doesn't feel like a challenge. the game lacks the great art direction and music that diablo 1 + 2 had. the whole feel of the game is cartoony is cheesy. terrible voice acting, crappy cinematics that look like sketches on coffee stained paper...
ill keep playing it for a little bit out of boredom, and to see how the story ends. but seriously, this isn't diablo. this is some crap made by people who had NOTHING to do with the original diablo games. they're just in it for the money. why else would they KILL DECARD CAIN?

Before I state anything I would like to say that the DRM is pretty bad, so beware that there may be some issues initially. Also, you need constant online connection to play this. Also, being so accessible you are more likely to find some one to play co-op with you.

The visuals are great and I am not sure what so many are complaining about. Hell I wish world of warcraft looked likes this instead of 3D. I really like it, and it sets the mood so very well. I think this art style has staying power, and this game years from now will be attractive to look at. It is very water color styled. This game has nearly a never ending amount of replay value to it. I highly recommend this game, but wait a week or two after the launch.

The customization of your character is present, visually(you can change color of your armor, make it disappear) and systematically, with the runes and the fact that changing the current active ability during combat its very complicated.
It is a good game, great art, nice graphics( people who are expecting FPS type of graphics dont understand much about gaming), and the story, so far, has being good, for a hack n slash game.

My one major complaint is that the game never feels very difficult, especially on Normal. There are frustrating moments, hordes of baddies, and increasing difficulty levels, but the same feeling of utter defeat never really happens as it did in the past.

For all the game's missteps, though, you certainly can't accuse Blizzard of phoning it in - if anything, the game suffers from the tendency to try a little to hard at times to evolve the design. [Aug 2012, p.61]

When it works, Diablo III is the best of the Diablo games. When it doesn't, all it does is make you mad. [July 2012, p.54]
