YellowLight's review pretty much summed up my issues with this game. It's pretty, but it's just a tiresome errand runner set in a pretty, but very empty world. Oh, and the VO work...not for everyone. Feels extremely amateur.

To add insult to injury, the game world is split between several loading screens, which only serve to bring the gameplay experience further down.

Since gameplay is pretty much non-existent, the game has to rely on its narrative, but the problem is, there is no narrative to speak off either. You get to experience small stories that play out when you fly from one place to another, and there is technically an over-arching story, but that simply ends meandering without ever really picking up the pace and going somewhere.

The dialogue through which the stories are delivered, while fully voiced, feels like amateur hour, both in terms of writing, and voice-acting. The worst offender in this regard, is the protagonist herself, Rania, as every line that comes out of her mouth is either whiny or preachy.

The one saving grace of this game, is its artstyle, which is admittedly beautiful. In fact, that's the only reason I'm giving it a score of 2 instead of 0. Too bad the beautiful design and interesting setting are wasted on a game with abysmal gameplay and awful narrative.

You'll be glad to know that its writing is far far better than those weak attempts.

Cloudpunk is a story driven game first and foremost, let us get that out of the way. The gameplay itself is fairly linear without much depth. However that is not its focus and certainly not where it excels. Where Cloudpunk shines is in the painting of its dystopian city and the lives of those caught within its merciless corporate driven cogs.

It does this largely through Rania (the players character) and her pet dog turned car artificial intelligence and their interactions within the world. The many story vignettes are often approached with levity and comedy, however in almost all cases just under that surface there is often commentary on corporate power and pitiless greed. Laughing at a scenario played out was a frequent experience but if you looked a little closer and muse on the same scenario and what it actually would mean for those involved. it often paints a horrifying existential life.

Its this experience that drives Cloudpunk, its this toe dip into its cyberpunk scenarios where you will find enjoyment and its a testament to the writing on show that its hits home in such an enjoyable way. Fun and thought provoking. If you enjoy story driven games then I highly recommend this.

The world building is done through conversations with both people on the street and 'Control', your handler and the person who sends you jobs.

The one thing I don't like about this game is the camera while you're on foot. The forced angles almost seem sometimes to be doing their best to disorient you. In your HOVA the camera is locked to behind the vehicle while you're driving about and that's fine (would have like a free camera here as well but it works so that's more of a personal niggle).

Not every game needs to be the next AAA shooter. Cloudpunks charm cause not from roaring set pieces and adrenaline pounding gameplay, but from intelligent writing, a chilled, melodic soundtrack, and a pulsing, living city in the sky. Cloudpunks premise, wherein you control a hover-car flying delivery driver in a futuristic mega city, is a phenomenally simple one, and one that could easily grow boring if not for the setting itself. Nivalis is as important a presence as the main character, Rania. An endless metropolis reminiscent of Star Wars' Coruscant or Freddy’s Mega-City, Nivalis is overflowing with character, and oozing with hidden nooks and crannies to investigate. It’s populated with a charmingly varied cast, from aggressive drug lords to futuristic Instagram/Twitch personalities, to a gang that builds children’s play parks as a way of sticking it to the man.

As Rania, you’ll need to navigate all this, and more, during your first night on the job with Cloudpunk, a semi-legal courier service, going anywhere and delivering anything. You spend most of the game soaring through Nivalis in your HOVA, a hover-car with an on board AI. The HOVA driving mechanics are solid enough to carry the travelling you’re perennially doing without becoming boring in the slightest. From navigating back alleys to soaring down the highways, the HOVA is a joy to pilot and will go down as one of my favourite in-game vehicles of all time. The characters and world of Cloudpunk are enough to keep you coming back for more. Each story is engaging, each new character bringing more soul to Nivalis. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with Cloudpunk, and I’m sure you will too.

If you're able to enjoy delving into this world, while relaxedly driving your hover car through a city in the clouds with a synth-wave soundtrack (maybe just for half an hour after work, like I did) - wonderful. If you are expecting any kind of engaging gameplay loop, stay away, and if you rate it under this aspect, I fully understand all the negative ratings.

The parts where you're walking around on foot are stiff, plus they feel like they go on forever because of how far you have to walk and how little you're actually doing at each location. All the dialogue with just about every character is stiff and uninteresting. I'm not sure why the soundtrack is available for purchase, because as far as I could tell, there wasn't much of a soundtrack at all. What few songs I actually noticed were mostly diegetic (like some music coming from inside a club I happened to walk past). after listening to the songs on their own while not playing the game, I couldn't help but think they all sounded like "generic atmospheric sci-fi tracks." They were all forgettable and, you guessed it, stiff. But the stiffest thing about this overwhelmingly stiff game was the voice acting. Good God, the voice acting is terrible. The main character of this game sounds more robotic than the actual robots she interacts with. Not even joking. Rania's voice wasn't the absolute worst in the game, but it was still painfully bad, especially considering the player has to hear her voice the most often.

To give some credit where it's due, I have to give a bit of praise to the game's visuals. After all, the visuals are what got me interested in this game in the first place. The massive, dark city in the sky is lit by the absolute surplus of neon lights which are plastered all over almost every building in the game. There's always rain pouring down from above and splashing onto the ground you walk on. The atmosphere created by the fantastic art style is oppressive, yet inviting. As someone who loves Cyberpunk settings in video games, this is the one thing the devs got right, and it shows.

Unfortunately, good visuals alone don't redeem this game and I can't recommend buying it. It's a shame too. I was really excited for this game.

Imagine you made a game with a dungeon full of collectibles, and a fun boulder-shaped yellow player character, and four ghosts that hunt down the player character. Could become an instant classic, right?

Only here you get a quest "Go in the upper left corner and meet the cherry", and you do that, and than you have to listen to the cherry's life story only to get a new quest to go to the lower right corner and meet the blue ghost, who is going to tell you how his day went. Than stop and listen to a long monologue between the player character and his AI companion, before you can go to the center and have a chat with the peach about nothing in particular.

There was a perfect little crazy taxi/truck simulator in a cyberpunk environment in here, but for some reason that aspect of the game doesn't even get a backseat. Way too often you don't even get to listen to the dialogue while you move from A to B so that the story and the "game" are completely disconnected from each other. You can buy stuff at every corner, but have no incentive to do it, you can even furnish you apartment, but you never use it for anything. Every once in a while you have a time limit to get where you are supposed to be, which I'd normally hate, but it's never challenging.

So it perfectly fits the general design where everything that normally would be the game is pointless, and you are left with the story. It seems to be the centerpiece, but is only told whenever you finish one of your deliveries, meaning that it already has severe pacing issues, and often you get a passenger's life story or the player character's back-story instead, or the mentioned debates with her AI companion that are mainly comic relief in an overall narrative that otherwise doesn't even know how to establish a general tone.

While the overall presentation is very decent, but also quite repetitive, I was bored out of mind after a few hours, and mildly confused. it's lacking challenge, and there is no progression where you build up your skills or develop your character or get money because you actually need it for anything, So you'd at least expect the story to go somewhere, but - no. It has no momentum, no message - if I had to say something nice it's that it perfectly encapsulates the kind of talk you have with you taxi driver where he rambles on and on about his life and you just want to get out.

So if you were going for that, congratulations, ionLands. You made the perfect getting-your-ears-talked-off-while-sitting-in-cab-Simulator.

The only side mission I could find in this game was one where you had to find 80 punch cards in increments of 20 then just give them to an android woman outside you apartment to hear a story.

One thing that is really going to annoy you in this game is bumping into oncoming flying vehicles because it will happen a lot at least in the first hour. Worst of all the whole game is completed in one day (game time). Just as you are ready to start Day 2 after your first sleep the game ends!

Nice idea just way too short and sorely lacking in any real interaction with the world or its inhabitants.
