  • Summary: Chroma Squad is a tactical RPG about five stunt actors who decide to quit their jobs and start their own Power Rangers-inspired TV show. Cast actors, purchase equipment and upgrades for your studio, craft weapons and giant Mechas out of cardboard and duct tape.

    Chroma Squad scratches both my nostalgia and strategy RPG itch in places that have long been left unscratched, and it’s a game I hope Behold Studios has plans to make more of.

    There is a hilarious tactical strategy RPG hiding beneath the pixel cover, which proudly confesses its Power Rangers heritage. It is a pity that it could not keep its pace during the whole time. [Issue#253]

    The whole thing is just so darn sweet and well-intentioned that its failings are less like roadblocks and more a nagging sense that this lovely, joyful thing should have been just a bit more consistently delightful than it is.

    If this isn't enough to warrant never touching it, you'll be pleased to know that the gameplay consists of one of the most shallow SRPG systems ever created. The parts where the rangers fight in a mech are basically 10 minute long QTEs (with one type of QTE, (namely "stop the slider"), a crafting system that heavily depends on RNG (in a game where you can't replay levels, so if you don't get the component you need you're forced to give up or save scum) and plenty of bugs.

    Also did I mention it was released in 2015 and uses the "doge" meme multiple times?    … Expand
