Add FFXII-like annoying characters in Ava, the twins and Typhon, unskippable cutscenes, annoyingly OP anointed enemies (yet no twitch streamers are calling for nerfs to these), writing on the level of Game of Thrones season 8, and an endgame mechanic (Mayhem Mode) which just isn't fun (and even though it wasn't fun in the first place, it got nerfed) - and you have an extremely disappointing sequel to what is probably my favorite series of all time.

The only positive is that some maps are quite fun (particularly low-grav maps). I doubt I will ever play the DLCs that I've already paid for.

This is a solid game and if you liked Borderlands 2 you will like this one. It has some performance problems and is rough around the edges such as the occasional random crash along with cut scenes not working properly on wide screen monitors.

Needs more polish which I'm sure it will get over time.

Also FOR THE LOVE OF GOD make the the cut scenes skippable after the first run through!

I used to be a huge fan of the Borderlands series, so what changed? well, for one, the writer, once funny humor has now become cringy, repetitive and predictable puns and low brow jokes we've only heard 16times before from the same series.

The storyline is absolute Garbage, with little to no player agency and every plotpoint is created by a literal Deus Ex Machina from some Siren power (essentially space magic) You lose nothing by turning the dialogue volume to 0 and instead look at the nice scenery.
The gameplay has improved over serious titles, shooting is fun, unfortunately Gearbox seem bent on crashing the one train still running, every hotfix comes with new nerfs, Instead of balancing the game by making other things stronger they destroy every fun build the players have created.... in a PVE game. I heartily wish I hadn't spend money on this, and I can't recommend anyone else buys it.

    Straight to the point.
What does this part bring? A lot of additional gameplay. Parkour, mechanics with machine guns, all this is wonderful, this is what was missing in 2 parts. There are no questions about this. But here is the story .. Prove it. The main villains - mannequins, compared to the handsome Jack from bl2 - are horror, the old heroes are not revealed, and the storyline itself is ****

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is a bad point, it becomes repetitive in some points and what I liked most was how they managed to evade it including a great variety of enemies.
there is a part in which the same game can be repetitive, but they managed to prevent it from becoming this way thanks to the large number and variety of enemies that are everywhere.
the story is not the best nor the villains the best that have been seen (Handsome Jack left a difficult position to fill) the outcome of each character to my liking was fine. The stories told by the great Typhon can not be missed and especially because of the importance of this character for the outcome.

The different zones in the game are a crap shoot on quality. Most of them are beautiful in their own way, but it's obvious some were designed on a budget, in a rush, and with the intention of feeding you through a specific area. They are suppose to be in the "open world" be are really just outdoor dungeons.

Shifting gears, after I completed the story for the first time I sat for a good two minutes with my mouth wide open. Not because it was amazing mind you, but because I couldn't believe I had waited 7 years for this steaming dung pile — I'm being generous. The main story in Borderlands 3 feels like the musings of sophomores just introduced to critical theory and trying intently to weave it into their favorite fan fiction.

Characters make asinine decisions, the plot is driven by idiotic motivations, and you, the supposed hero of the story, are agentless, if not completely excluded, from the majority of the important parts of the story. You don't matter. Very little you do matters. And in the end, you don't matter at all.

This is especially true if you're a straight male. The writers went out of their way to exclude straight men from the main story. Save for brief involvement with a couple of characters, the majority of the men you interact with will either be evil or idiots. The main cast will be dominated by female characters who seem to have forgotten their male peers from the last two games.

This is critical theory at work in the gaming industry. Women, minorities, LGBT+ are "oppressed" and therefore the Social Justice Warriors must "right" the "injustices of oppression" by "empowering oppressed peoples", especially at the expense of the "oppressor". Logic, audience, and story be darned. Don't get me wrong. I think having meaningful, empowering, and main roles for female characters is a good thing. But not when it's done at the expense of a compelling story, deliberately excluding numerous characters who are natural additions to the story. Again, if you think this is being "over sensitive", you need to read up on what critical theory is and how it's being implemented in our culture today.

A game that use to pride itself on being anti-PC is now a sermon on political correctness. The main story feels like it was written by a team of interns as a college project, but the game play is phenomenal. If you can ignore the main story (the side stories are where the charming Borderlands humor still resides) then you can squeeze some enjoyment out of this game.

*My score has nothing to do with the game-play, story, characters, or the **** that followed EPIC and GEARBOX and Randy. It's solely on my experience with the performance of the game from launch to now. I'd honestly give this game a 8, maybe 7 overall.*

So, after that, I have been plagued with constant crashes. Also, for some reason my GPU just goes "nope!' and I would either have to force a restart or complete shutdown. This is the only game i've had that kind of crash with. My PC can handle the Rec. Specs..

    CPU: 8700k
    GPU: GTX 1070
    RAM: 32GB
    HDD: 2TB, 512GB SSD
    OS: Win10 64bt

I get between 1-3 hours before I get this crash. I've tried every "fix" out there aside from reinstalling Win-10. Switching from Windowed to full-screen, closing third party apps, rolling back drivers/updating drivers to latest, Updating Bios, lowering graphics. The score will stand till a actual patch comes and hopefully deals with the problems. It will change based on if things get fixed.

I've never had a single problem like this with any Borderlands game from 1 to the Pre-sequel.

    ****Edit****

So after a patch, I have noticed that I have not been crashing like it used to. I may get an occasional stutter or a little lag with menus, but other than that, the game runs well enough with what I have.

Game play - Almost like any looter/shooter, the guns do feel much better than Previous games, Each brand does feel unique and there's a lot of variety, hopefully it will spawn many builds, and not just a couple "meta" builds for each class. A majority of Legionaries are not tied to a certain boss, and can be world drops, either in random loot or just random enemy. You can still farm certain bosses to get loot as well as some endgame stuff. The 4 classes we have (At launch, slim possibility that they might add more vault hunters, not guaranteed) Do feel different from each other and should have great synergy when builds/loadouts are more refined.

The scaling is actually really good, compared to what we had in BL2 with the ridiculous amounts of health/shields and damage for both players/enemies. It's found a good point where you're not reliant on set weapons/shields/grenades/classmods or your not gonna have fun. (I was able to use a LV17 legendary pistol till about 30)

Story - I'll keep this short, it's not amazing. I mean there will be jokes and stuff that people will either laugh at and enjoy or just cringe and sigh. Things could've been developed better and some things should've been fleshed out better. Oddly enough, some of the side missions do have better dialogue than the main story.

Performance - A game this anticipated should have not launched in this state. I can understand PC being a bit harder to optimizing because of the vast amount of hardware to account for, but the PS4/PS4 Pro and XboxO/Xbox OX did have a bit of trouble as well.

Graphics - Game looks beautiful. I'm able to enjoy the game on 1080p High settings with average FPS of around 75-90 with dips to 60(when toooo much is going on)

I know they still got plenty to do to make the game great for all. More patches, buffs, nerfs, and when the DLC comes out, hopefully it will add more to the story and make it much better. With everything I've went through and what I've played currently my new score feels justified to me. Get this game if you want to, it's not a must own but if you're a fan of Borderlands and Looter/shooters in general. Probably get it on a sale. Or wait till April when the paid beta is over. XD

Gearbox went so wrong in this. 5 steps forward, 4 steps back. From the different voice actors, to different writers, to leaving huge plot holes from the previous games, how could the critic reviews possibly give this more than a 5.

The bank has a bug in which wipes everything. I had 10 anointed legendary and 40 legendary. All gone. 40 hrs worth of farming is gone. Good job borderland.
Inventory is just stupid. Don't know how they coded it but frame drops like crazy. I actually lag when I open inventory and I have really good gig (I7-8700, 16gb ram, 2060 6gb). Like game actually freezes during inventory.

I have also had zero technical issues with the game to this point.

After finishing the game and starting another playthrough, I can definitely say the game itself is better than BL2, but the STORY isn't as good, and part of that is because the villains are nowhere near as good as Handsome Jack. The overall dialogue is also not as good as BL2. I am also not thrilled with how some of the old characters are treated in the story, but as far as the game itself, it's still excellent overall.

Dropping my score from a 9 to an 8 because the story and characters were always a big component of what I liked about the Borderlands games, and while I still think BL3 makes the story in games like Destiny look like a joke, the story/characters/dialogue (and how old characters are treated, as I said before) are not up to par with Borderlands 2, even if everything else is better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. PC Player here, wanting to chime in. A quick summary...I did not enjoy this much, and would recommend you find something else to fill your time.

I had played Borderlands 2, and was intrigued by the gameplay and general story leading in to Borderlands 3. I know the story wasn't terribly strong in 2, but it was still decent enough, if very predictable. In 3, the story largely ignores the set up from the interim games, and is not just predictable, but skirts by predictable plot points by going for threads that are less predictable because they are so much weaker than what you could extrapolate on your own. Side quest stories are rather weak, and despite having a massive catalog of characters to choose and utilize, they are all very two dimensional and have little growth. Don't worry about your own character's arc though; they'll never show up in any of the cutscenes (bar one, and they don't have any impact then) despite several cutscenes where they might have been able to make up for the "main crew"'s stunning idiocy in several scenes, or sudden loss of powers as the writers couldn't think of a way forward with the plot otherwise.

The 'humor' gets very grating as well, with several sections repeating the same joke until either you go insane, complete the quest (which drags on and on) or just turn off dialogue volume (a certain 'Escort npc' on the final planet comes to mind, as does a robot-woman making chimp sounds; it's not anywhere near as funny as it sounds). If not repeating the same joke ad nauseam, it's being drowned in every single aspect of the game going for 'wacky-kooky-silly' humor where everything is a joke, at which point the humor spreads into a thin boring mire that loses its lustre and drowns you in cringy outdated jokes and pop-culture references. Some characters are just paper-thin jokes that shoot guns, which can be done well when handled by more competent writers, but in Gearbox's hands are done a disservice (such as Aurelia Hammerlock, who apparently was a more fleshed out character in the interim games; here, she is "I am better than you because I am rich and you aren't" and "I'm an Ice-Cold **** (Because she's mean and uses ice powers, get it?) and that's about it for her character).

Enough of my complaints of how poorly written a bloody Borderlands game is, and on to gameplay! It's...alright. Gunplay is decent, but you'll often find you'll out-level areas really quickly if you do all the side quests in the zones as well as all the challenges which takes relatively little time. Enemies never get smarter than "wobble back and forth between open areas and partial cover", even towards the end of the game; they just get more bullet-spongy. Bosses are not much smarter, as they don't use cover due to their massive healthbars; only a couple use unique abilities, and even then it's largely the arena. Enemy scaling is all over the place, with areas sometimes scaling to your level to afford you a challenge and sometimes not (though this may just have been due to story purposes).

If you thought that having several planets to travel to now would make the world open up more, then I am sorry to say you have been misled. The world(s) are even more linear feeling than in Borderlands 2, though the terrible map might trick you into thinking otherwise. Mission design is rather plain, with practically every single one being "go to place and shoot the dudes", often contriving terrible reasoning for a quest to have dudes to shoot. Interfaces continue to be terrible, which they seem to not have learned from Borderlands 2. There is even a second interface you need to go to every now and then to receive extra powerful weapons, though most often you'll just end up selling them. Additionally, the interface will often bug out and swap equipment icons around, so you better be careful when selling items to make sure you don't actually sell something you wanted to keep-best to favourite every good item you come across the moment you find it, which means slowing down the 'fast-paced shoot and loot gameplay' even more than it already does itself. The game ends very poorly, with the only reward being a legendary (the game gives them out in spades) and the option to play it again but harder now.

As for stability, many people I talked to had issues with it crashing and bugging out, as well as frequent frame drops. Personally I lucked out, as I didn't have any frame drops aside from whenever I first loaded the game up or occasionally when zoning into a new area. I did have several other bugs though; a couple CTD's out of nowhere, as well as a bug where when I teleported into a fast travel point I was stuck and unable to do anything outside of fast travel elsewhere (though I was still stuck and needed to quit the game). I consider myself lucky on that front.

Overall, this game is not worth the dollars. Poorly written, poorly optimized/tested, an awful repetitive slog through a miserably bad story.

I personally think that the game is a 10/10, loved it and played the story out in 3 days!

If you love a crazy loot fun run and gun shooter pick this up!
This is my game of the year. Good Job Gearbox

I already have 5 days logged in my first Vault Hunter. I play Zane and he's hilarious. Love the gunplay and combat, it's all I ever wanted from the next borderlands game. Well worth the 7 year wait

This game has amazing gameplay, fun side missions, great boss encounters, and classic borderlands humor. Hours of fun, billions of guns, and a dlc roadmap that will see the light of day unlike other company's. Gearbox has out done themselves.

The gameplay is the best in the series, the story... just above BL1. Don't get me wrong, the plot has increased in scale and epicness? vultiple planets, lots of vault across galexy, but... it doesn't help when your villans are plot devices. When you introduce highly annoying sidekick and forget about a bunch of old but good ones. When you exploit too much of an old hero. No. the plot isThe gameplay is the best in the series, the story... just above BL1. After two weeks of constant improvements most of the technical issues are no longer there. FPS is stable, scoping doesn't slow the game, etc. I'd recommend this game to fans and newcomers as well.

Gearbox has a problem: the fantastic Borderlands 2 is too good to be beaten. But in the case of Borderlands 3, it is still more than a worthy successor. The filmmakers brought many pop-cultural references, maybe pushing too hard on how they want to be “modern”, but otherwise it's a great game again. [Issue#298]

Borderlands 3 offers a generous experience, with colourful characters, neat gameplay and a charming universe. Its formula, very close to that of the previous episodes does not revolutionize the show but its small new features bring a little freshness and the scenario makes us want to go to the end of the adventure. Its dynamism and nervousness make it a choice piece for adrenaline-ready FPS lovers and license fans.

The fun, humorous storyline, some great dialogue and theatrical accents of the diverse characters, beautifully varied locations and the same great gunplay that Borderlands is renowned for, means that Borderlands 3 becomes another must have title in the series.
