This rating is just about the game itself, not Epic exclusivity or anything about Gearbox as a company—frankly I can't stand Pitchford, but the amount of work every other Gearbox employee put into this game truly shows. In many ways I think it surpasses Borderlands 2. The writing is good and in general I would say it's a bit on the lighter side, which is partly because of the villains. OfThis rating is just about the game itself, not Epic exclusivity or anything about Gearbox as a company—frankly I can't stand Pitchford, but the amount of work every other Gearbox employee put into this game truly shows. In many ways I think it surpasses Borderlands 2. The writing is good and in general I would say it's a bit on the lighter side, which is partly because of the villains. Of course, going in with the mindset that they'll never be better villains than Handsome Jack will probably hurt your perception of them. The Calypso twins are funny and douchey in their own right, but they're a completely different brand of characters from Jack and I found myself fascinated by their origins. As for the gameplay, the weapons all feel great to handle and I've played as the Siren and the Gunner so far, both of whom I've enjoyed. The reason I give it a 9 instead of a 10 is because I've had some trouble with how the game cutscenes look on certain-sized screens (21:9) and that does detract a bit from the experience. Hopefully it will be patched. Expand

Steam **** coming. This game and Steam are belonged to each other, because of community and achievement part. But we have what we have and it is still a borderlands game. Next time I ask to put a game on both platforms and let users decide where they want to spend money.

    Bugs and poor performance.
    Unfinished game.
The main issue is the hit reg while playing with friends.
    There is no dedicated servers.
Wait until it launches on Steam.
I bought it from Epic on launch because I have impatient friends.

sad version of a beloved game. I would love to turn in my politically correct version for a less inclusive version that says midget. and the graphics changes make the characters look too different. in conclusion this game is perfect if your a 10 year old girl.

Ok. After beating the main story i can safely say everything that this game has done wrong and everything that has done right.....

    3. The fun element is there, although very repetitive starting at the middle of the story (not gonna spoil but people who played it will understand).
    Now for the bad Stuff:
    1. The game IS NOT Borderlands 3, is more like Borderland 2.5.
    2. The game is a Broken Mess.
    3. The gameplay is laggy and broken, and it doesn`t have the stability to back it up.
    4. The monetization aspect of the game is another piece of **** that woasn`t necessary in this franchise at all.
    5. The Story is a dissaster.
    6. The humor is horrendous after the first hour you play.
    7. Randy Pitchford is still CEO of Gearbox (what world are we living in?)

    Conclusion & closing comment:

Buy the game when its on sale (or when they release a full patch and make it stable) or wait (because it will happen) for the Game of the Year Edition.
This game IS NOT worth full price at the state it was released.

TLDR I'm disappointed and Gearbox can and should be better.

I desperately wanted to love this game. I loved the borderlands games. The last two games had so much energy in them and I was so excited to play this one. However The NUMEROUS NUMEROUS game breaking bugs i encountered alone hurt the game for me, along with the blatant fee to pay economy already baked in waiting for the reviews

The story of this game feels like a borderlands game with the heart removed. Looking back to borderlands 2 Handsome Jack was a villain that you liked thwarting. He was always a presence and they caught lightning in a bottle with him. Here i feel like they could have done something interesting with the cult but instead decided to try and create handsome jack, but this time we have 2 of him.
I loved the idea of more worlds to explore because we had so much environment in Pandora in the last games to explore so it seemed like we were promised entire worlds to roam. Instead we got small chunks of pretty scenery with reskinned enemies and half as many side quests.
This game lost the heart of borderlands and doesn't feel like it promises anything.
When i finished this game i didn't sit back in relief like after any other borderlands play through and think, man i can't wait to do that again. Instead I just felt this knot in my stomach, and a feeling of emptiness.
"this is what I waited for?"
    "where was my adventure?"
It's just more borderlands, but not in a good way. It's the worst parts of borderlands Boiled into a game.

The story is **** it has SJW vibes.
"Man stupid, woman strong, intelligent and independent." vibe.
They make every woman seem like a goddess with how they prop them up.
They even do this for an annoying kid named Ava, complete waste of space.

    Story - SUCKS
The Tyreen is a **** Joke Compare to Handsome Jack
Graphics - too much celshading/particle effects with more disorientation and too many Lags
Class Balancing - Its complete Broken again
Endgame - Absolutly boring compare to BL2

It makes not really better compare to BL2 and the bad release with lags and bugs makes it much worse, it feels like an Early Access Game

If Borderlands 3 was just the gunplay, the loot, the level design, and the bossfights, it would be a 8/10. But it's not. But it's not. Half of this game is horribly written dialogue being constantly yammered into your ears. It's a co-op game, I wanna talk to my friends, not listen to these asinine characters. Not a single joke in the main story quest got a laugh from me. The performance of the female antagonist is particularly awful. The voice does not fit that character at all, and just straight up reads lines wrongly. It's terrible. The protagonists are fine. They're of relatively few words, which is on-par with Borderlands, and they don't say anything too embarrassing. There's one character near the end of the game that seemed fine, and is probably the best character of the game. There's a twist in the story, and it's more or less pointless, also. Overall, the story is the worst of the borderlands games by far, and the jokes are right down there with it.

The level design is ridiculous in this game. Each area is absolutely massive, full of sub areas that are massive, and full of sidequests that are massive. Speaking of side quests, they're home to much better writing. The post-campaign portion of Borderlands 3 is by far the best part of the game... but you have to go through such a slog of misery to get there, it's not worth it. They could have completely skipped out on the stupid villains and just had a game full of side quests and random missions and the game would have been a thousand times better.

Overall, if you don't mind putting the dialogue on mute, it's fine. But what kind of maniac would play a story-based game with the story turned off? It's just not worth it. It's a disappointing package. So many improvements... but the core of the game is dated, immature, and -in some places- completely terrible.

As a huge fan of the predecessors, this sequel was a massive letdown. I can’t really add anything that hasn’t been said already, but just to reiterate, it’s a boring, plodding, mess. Terrible story, boring gameplay, awful characters, and mind numbing fetch quests as far as the eye can see. I forced myself to play through the whole story, and it never got more fun or interesting. The game play, skill trees, and guns are great and obvious improvements from BL2. The game mechanics are fun, flow well, and work just like you'd like them to. Boss fights are largely improved upon and require more thought and effort than before (except for maybe the last one?)

The different zones in the game are a crap shoot on quality. Most of them are beautiful in their own way, but

The different zones in the game are a crap shoot on quality. Most of them are beautiful in their own way, but it's obvious some were designed on a budget, in a rush, and with the intention of feeding you through a specific area. They are suppose to be in the "open world" be are really just outdoor dungeons.

Shifting gears, after I completed the story for the first time I sat for a good two minutes with my mouth wide open. Not because it was amazing mind you, but because I couldn't believe I had waited 7 years for this steaming dung pile — I'm being generous. The main story in Borderlands 3 feels like the musings of sophomores just introduced to critical theory and trying intently to weave it into their favorite fan fiction.

Characters make asinine decisions, the plot is driven by idiotic motivations, and you, the supposed hero of the story, are agentless, if not completely excluded, from the majority of the important parts of the story. You don't matter. Very little you do matters. And in the end, you don't matter at all.

This is especially true if you're a straight male. The writers went out of their way to exclude straight men from the main story. Save for brief involvement with a couple of characters, the majority of the men you interact with will either be evil or idiots. The main cast will be dominated by female characters who seem to have forgotten their male peers from the last two games.

This is critical theory at work in the gaming industry. Women, minorities, LGBT+ are "oppressed" and therefore the Social Justice Warriors must "right" the "injustices of oppression" by "empowering oppressed peoples", especially at the expense of the "oppressor". Logic, audience, and story be darned. Don't get me wrong. I think having meaningful, empowering, and main roles for female characters is a good thing. But not when it's done at the expense of a compelling story, deliberately excluding numerous characters who are natural additions to the story. Again, if you think this is being "over sensitive", you need to read up on what critical theory is and how it's being implemented in our culture today.

A game that use to pride itself on being anti-PC is now a sermon on political correctness. The main story feels like it was written by a team of interns as a college project, but the game play is phenomenal. If you can ignore the main story (the side stories are where the charming Borderlands humor still resides) then you can squeeze some enjoyment out of this game.

    Guns? Awesome.
    Environments? Huge.
Enemies? Various. Missions? Antagonists? Whoa, Gearbox/2k, you really missed the target. Our antagonists are a couple of youtubers. Our missions are things like "get this coffee shop up and running because I can't live without my coffee!" and "let's get this hamburger restaurant up and running!" etc. It's like every character is CL4P-Trap!

It's like every character is CL4P-Trap! It's clap-track humor all through the game.

And the thing is, claptrap is really only funny in VERY small doses. He gets annoying really fast.

And while I could hardly put down BL1 or BL2, and binge-played both on release, I'm just not drawn to the game. It's not a bad game. It plays well. It has a lot of polish.

It's just not compelling. The story and enemies and motivation are just hopelessly mediocre.

And while we're on the subject, here's a problem that BL3 has that carries over from BL2.

In BL1, the player character was THE HERO. Yes, Angel was there to guide you, but Angel was a disembodied voice who couldn't do anything without you. But in BL2, the original BL1 characters are the heroes. The player character is just a go-fer, an errand-person, a hireling. Every step of the way, you have Roland and Lilith and the others talking to you like your child, "Way to go, Champ! Good job!" BL3 does the same, only now you have all the BL1 and BL2 characters as the heroes, and once again, it's "Hey, kid! You got promise. Here, go get me a hamburger!"

    Nah.

It'd be much better if the player character were alone, and were the lone hero, and the others kept out of it a LOT more.

Gearbox has a problem: the fantastic Borderlands 2 is too good to be beaten. But in the case of Borderlands 3, it is still more than a worthy successor. The filmmakers brought many pop-cultural references, maybe pushing too hard on how they want to be “modern”, but otherwise it's a great game again. [Issue#298]

Borderlands 3 offers a generous experience, with colourful characters, neat gameplay and a charming universe. Its formula, very close to that of the previous episodes does not revolutionize the show but its small new features bring a little freshness and the scenario makes us want to go to the end of the adventure. Its dynamism and nervousness make it a choice piece for adrenaline-ready FPS lovers and license fans.

The fun, humorous storyline, some great dialogue and theatrical accents of the diverse characters, beautifully varied locations and the same great gunplay that Borderlands is renowned for, means that Borderlands 3 becomes another must have title in the series.
