Bleak Faith: Forsaken is a game with incredible potential. It makes up for technical issues with surreal environments and horrific enemy designs, but its core gameplay suffers from heavy focus on Souls-like mechanics and common deaths. It still needs time to resolve those problems, but if the devs make use of that time with continued updates and support, faith in this game's greatness might not be so bleak after all.

Bleak Faith: Forsaken has a lot of potential, and the developers seem dedicated to updating the game, so it's possible that a lot of this review will be outdated in a few months. At the moment, it's a testament to the difficulty of making a good Soulslike. All of the pieces are there, but they don't fit together properly, which exacerbates the genre flaws more significantly than any other type of game on the market. Bleak Faith has some strengths if you're willing to work past its flaws, but it doesn't stand out among the absolute glut of similar titles on the market.

Bleak Faith: Forsaken is a competent sci-fi soulslike with a beautiful and brutal new world to explore. It’s combat is serviceable, but its lack of explanations, narrative or even lore will leave many floundering without anything much to grab onto. This is one for the really dedicated Souls veteran who leans far to the extremes of the From Software design school.

Bleak Faith Forsaken’s screenshots are impressive. The game’s art direction and atmosphere suggest an oppressive future world, but Bleak Faith Forsaken is all window dressing. Behind the façade, a seriously unpolished Soulslike filled with broken dreams awaits.

I would recommend buying this simply because it is incredibly creative with excellent visuals and sound design, as well as detailed RPG mechanics with many possible builds. Is it polished? Is it as good as Elden ring? No. But it's different, and it's creative, and it's higher quality than most AAA games released these days, and it was made by 2 or 3 people. Expand

It hurts a lot that a game as amazing as this one doesn't have user reviews. Still, I'm the first to review it on PC.

The strong points are definitely the World Building and the atmosphere. The verticality of the game is impressive, many layers from the bottom of the sea to the clouds.

An architecture inspired by the brutalism of Czechoslovakia and other areas of central Europe.

I see a lot of love in this game, a lot of dedication. Even so, it's a WANABE, a very experimental game, of course, only 3 people worked on this game, and to finish messing it up, the drama that they bought the assets from someone who seems to have stolen them from From Software. In any case, I am not going to talk about it here. To the team that worked on this game, I hope they find a way to continue designing video games, they are geniuses with maps.

In conclusion: A gem of souls, I enjoyed it even more than Steelrising. I hope souls continue to evolve.

This review that I am writing is special and different from most, which will only talk about the technical problems of the game and the drama of the assets. I'm glad for that in a way.

My main concerns are technical: character movement and hitboxes. The movement often feels very off, like the character is sliding across the ground while pretending to move their legs. And while hitboxes for some enemies and weapons are legit good, for others they are practically nonexistent. For example, you can be standing still in front of the enemy (I experienced this with the ones that switch between bow and sword), and it can hit you like 10 times with none of the strikes dealing damage. There were a number of other problems and bugs at the start of the game, but the devs fixed the majority of them in a couple of days, which is a very very good sign.

With the problems out of the way, I want to praise the hell out of this game. I cannot find enough words to describe how much I love the artistic design and the atmosphere. I have never seen anything like that in the games I played before. There is a manga Blame! by Tsutomu Nihei, where the main character travels the intricate megastructure spanning the whole solar system. Bleak Faith brilliantly managed to offer the player a similar experience. Standing on a bridge across some abyss, you can look in any direction and find weird giant interconnected structures spanning the space around you: some looking very futuristic, some looking like medieval castles, and some being just like Eastern European panel houses. It daunts and overwhelms you, at the same time completely taking your breath away. The music in the game is also done really well and remarkably fits the atmosphere. Even gameplaywise, I honestly think that Bleak Faith is one of the best souls-like games out there. The fact that the team of only 3 people developed it in a reasonable amount of time is completely insane. They deserve a massive amount of credit.

The game is rough around the edges, but I think that even right now it is definitely worth giving a shot. And if the devs continue putting in the work and polishing the said rough edges, I can see it eventually being 10/10 for me.

Hello dear reader, I am not a videogames passionate player, but a play regularly. Actually I am a firmware-and-software developer in my life, so my opinion is a little sided for this game towards the developers, especially because it touches what I like more in videogames. To be straightforward: at day one the game was unplayable, at day 3-5 it could be played but with too many small issues and bugs breaking game, at day more-or-less 10 it was functional and now it is balanced. It is the first videogame of three developers, so to expect a Dark Souls-like would have been mostly ridiculous. Indeed it is a Dark Souls-lite, with 40 hours of survival-action-rpg. The manga BLAME! architectures view-style, Shadow of the Colossus vibes, enough Dark Souls game design, strategic placing fighting over rapid rolling actions with several abilities and consumables to create flavour are present, all to create a full open-world rpg of the size more-or-less of Bloodborne in terms of amounts of weapons, armors, bosses etc. It's a game of a kind, not for everyone, like any other videogame on this planet. Just one problem is still present: hitboxes of some objects in the world can generate hilarious/excruciating events, but they are very few now, and the movements are still a little clunky . As first opera of three people is incredible, especially in the objects details and in the possibility to go almost everywhere in the map. There is a very cool feature, awesome for me, which I will not state to not spoiler, but I want to state only this: you really have no-limits in the world exploration, and this, together with the world architecture, resonate with my soul!

Despite the very creative and inspired art direction, the game is absolutely, brutally, painfully raw and buggy.

Despite the very creative and inspired art direction, the game is absolutely, brutally, painfully raw and buggy.

This is not just "janky". It's simply brutally buggy and painful to try and play. The first few hours were much much better, and then later areas are simply unbearably buggy, with issues that either kill you or force you to respawn or simply waste tons of your time with no meaningful gameplay or reward in-between. 2/10 for the great art direction, but it's simply not in a playable, marketable state.
