  • Summary: Blaze & Blade is a pointless PC conversion of a substandard console role-playing game.

There were problems with getting camera right and class balance wasn't great but damn, couch coop is still unrivaled in many ways.

Each class had its quirk, some useful, some gimmicky. Some classes performed better early on, some excelled at late game. But you always could roll another character, add him to your party and train that sucker until greatness.

Game didn't hold your hand, there was no boring western game loop loot-stuff>sell-stuff, it was all about solving mysteries of the game world with use of simple and addicting action.

I enjoyed discovering where to find ultimate spells and weapons, it was one of the very few games I actually liked poking every corner to check for secret entrances or shortcuts. Mostly because it was one of the very few games that had many secrets and hidden features. In addition to atmosphere of this game it made truly an adventure.

Back in the day i'd give it 5/10 tops, but today, after poopy Cyberpunks, greedy cashgrabs, dumbed down mechanics, and grindy games as service this is easily one of the best and complex games ever made.

I loved this game 20 years ago and I love this game today even more.

I have no idea how, but we ended up talking about this little oddity. I was amazed that anyone else had even heard of it.

Blaze & Blade, back in the day, gave me and my cohorts everything we so desperately wanted. A full length, co-operative RPG with a range of classes, dungeons, monsters, boss encounters and treasure. We loved it, and although we never finished the game, we clocked around 100 hours of gametime.

Recently I rescued it from a dusty box in my attic. A mistake I would soon compare to the Nazis opening the Lost Arc in Indiana Jones.

The levels are unintuitive and confusing, the loading scenes are extraordinarily long. Despite being 4-player, only one person can damage an enemy at a time. Combat is slow, and several of the classes are dead-end choices, leaving several of your team frustrated at the weakness of their avatars. Leave well alone.
