Beyond Words is a fun time-killer and a nice way to exercise the old prefrontal cortex.

Beyond Words is an addictive blend of Scrabble and Balatro, but some of the requirements to beat later stages feel quite unreasonable, so it can be frustrating to play and be met with failure, only to start over.

Beyond Words is a clever mashup of Scrabble and roguelikes that’s easy to pick up but tough to master. When the right tiles and perks align it’s brilliant. But when they don’t, it can feel like luck’s playing against you.

I did enjoy it, to some extent – it’s still a game where you get to spell out words, which isn’t something I’ll ever get bored of doing. But there are much better examples of roguelike deckbuilder word games that do something new and interesting and unique, and I’d much rather play those games than this one.

If it’s on special, it’s not bad for a quick pick up and play a round or two… but the random nature of the power cards and boosts and the ludicrously steep starting point for some levels, either via score or play space… means it can get frustrating quickly. I’m pretty near completing it and am quite sure I could with perseverance and more focused strategy… I’ve just lost all interest in doing so. If you like Balatro and think it would be interesting in a Scrabble setting, then I’d say grab a copy.
