Battlefield 4 is poorly optimized garbage at this point. My system has never had major issues on any games old or new. My system has never had major issues on any games old or new. I picked up BF3 premium several years after launch, and my modest system pushed it hard on ultra settings filling my LED with glorious 60fps. Obviously, I didn’t expect to get Ultra 60fps on BF4 without some overclocking and possibly a gpu upgrade. But even had I upgraded, the cpu spikes, constant crashes, loss of audio, and abysmal server performance render new hardware moot. The newest Radeon card isn’t going to prevent 40% cpu spikes that cause stuttering and lag like I’ve never seen before. The spikes can be extreme and being knifed or sniped during those moments is irritating to say the least.
To add insult to system failure, the game is essentially more of the same. As expected, the campaign is short, but it lacks the depth of BF3’s story which by comparison was somewhat enjoyable. The multiplayer interface has been slightly revamped. But nothing ground breaking. The maps are clearer for easier spawning and customizing loadouts is somewhat simpler. Overall, the changes are so minor that it feels nothing more than reskinned BF3. In fact, many things are the same as BF3. The controls are the same as BF3. The ingame intel alerts are the same as BF3. Many are the vehicles are the same. And I’m convinced that some of the maps are redrawn BF3 maps. There are new features, like commander mode. But the question remains: Did Dice change enough?
Does BF4 have anything to offer? The graphics are better. However, they are not good enough to justify buying the game. Why buy a game to crank up supersampling when there is the 100% certainty that your $2000 rig will crash at some point? This game can only be a buy when all the bugs are fixed. The ironic part of this debacle is that AMD based systems are being hit especially hard by the game-breaking optimization issues. DICE loudly touted that BF4 is “optimized” for AMD machines because PS4 and Xbox One are using AMD cpu/gpu’s. This “optimization” did not carry over to PC’s. So hopefully next gen console gamers will enjoy a stable product. PC gamers got screwed.
In BF4, DICE and EA followed the Activision formula: If it isn’t broke don’t fix it. This game could aptly be called Battlefield 3.5. Hopefully the patches and expansion packs will address concerns that DICE has been sleeping thru the testing phase of development. Unfortunately, I’m getting the distinct feeling that we might have a Crytek clone in DICE. Dice loudly trumpets its game engine but releases products that are only half finished. For gamers who enjoy BF3, stay with that game a while longer. BF4 is too buggy to recommend. Besides, the games are just too similar. Wait a few months, and pick it up on sale. Hopefully will have its act together by then.

I'm reviewing the SP portion here:
I wasn't expecting much of the game and now that it's finally available for only 20 bucks (unless you want to get the Deluxe Premium whatever edition) I checked out a Gameplay vid and was like: yea, looks nice, let's give it a shot.

Now - the first 15 minutes of the game look quite promising and atmospheric, and then it starts to get really cheap. And it only gets worse and somewhere along the line you wonder if they simply stopped the SP guys from blowing money on it because most of their money comes from MP DLCs anyway.

Besides that the story is really dull, wasn't expecting much anyway, they really didn't care this time around (compared to BF3) to setup a campaign that is satisfying.
To me it looks like they started trying to make something nice, and then their budget was cut and they came up with half-assed action sequences... and not even that - you are left to imagine that something fancy just happened because animating the destruction of a dam/ship was too expensive so they just let your character black out.

No, this is not the game we were promised, this isn't the game we were shown at Gamescom, E3 etc etc. This game, while it may be fun while you can enjoy it. Well you're wrong, while I may not be the most die hard Battlefield fan I've been playing since bad company one all the way through and you know what? On launch there was never any problems of on the same level that are in BF4.

This is why I'm giving it such a terrible review, because while the gameplay may be amazing as we were promised, you'll never get to experience it with all the crashes, and it isn't just me experiencing this, around the world people haven't been able to play the buggy mess that is BF4. So if you want my advice, go out and buy BF3 premium, you'll get your money's worth, because it's been several weeks and EA isn't looking like patching the game anytime soon...

It starts off in a car, with a "funny" joke. Then you go back in time where DICE thought they were "cool", 13:37, seriously DICE, be realistic for once. To compare, BF3's campaign was varied and had a lot of cool things in it, like you could be in a jet, and iirc an attack chopper, and amongst dozens of tanks. This one, nothing. You're in a tank for about 3.5 minutes and a boat for about 5 minutes. That's IT. I could compare the singleplayer to the horrible MW3 campaign and STILL the BF4 campaign would stand out as the absolutely worst. You have missions that apparently require stealth. Every time, I've just pulled out the gun and shot the crap out of the AI cause there's no obvious path to walk around them. But wait, does it have to be this difficult? Am I maybe thinking too much? Yes I am, the AI in the BF4 campaign is stupid. They have no ears, no sense of anything sneaking behind them. Then you also got your own AI, which is apparently the slowest and worst scripted AI ever. You always have to run in front of them to be able to progress while shooting. And if you do so, the scripted enemies will show up BEHIND you. They pop up like you don't have adblock or something. Other than that, the plot is confusing, seems like this one guy is the reason for all this, then stuff happens then there's no conclusion, not even a pointer for what would happen or a sequel. Wouldn't want to play this campaign at all again, the story is less than interesting and the gameplay is worse than regular CoD run and gunning.

Now over to multiplayer, which apparently is the only thing this game is made to do. Hey, morons, you pay to have a singleplayer too, even if you don't play it. Could've probably saved 10 bucks on not having a singleplayer at all.
The multiplayer is good enough, still not better than BF3. People are freaking about this levolution crap. It's NOT the biggest or greatest thing ever, it's just a slightly scripted event that people want to abuse so that it happens IMMIDEATLY. So you're playing most of the time in a levoluted map. Some morons would say that it's "game changing". I would just call it a minor inconvenience. There are minor improvements from BF3, like the weapons got more stuff, you can choose better between special stuff for your classes. But that doesn't matter at all, because of the one thing DICE has not a single clue in, which is the ****ing netcode. BF3 was bad, but this takes it to an entirely new level. This is also the reason I would say the full release feels more like an alpha, as the beta had extremely close to none issues with this. The servers crash left and right, now there have been a bunch of patches and STILL the servers are extremely unstable and the netcode ****s up every now and then. The hit detection is gone, there's nothing. Snipers are useless 90% of the time due to a bad netcode. DMRs are completely useless as they deal no damage at all at any range. Then you have assaults and carbines which are the only weapons that works decent, then you have LMGs which are STILL the most overpowered things about the game. When the second assault DLC comes, then guess which maps EVERYONE's gonna play. Your favourite meatgrinder maps! There's also big issues when it comes to things. Suppression is still a dumb thing and is even worse now. Defibs have to be charged up now, and WHO knows about that? About 0.1% of everyone playing. So you get revived most of the time with 20 health and die immideatly. Thanks DICE, please tell everyone before making these changes. At least the spawn protection is gone when you spawn on other players.
Also, the feature I've been excited for in this game, the commander mode. Completely ruined. I'd rather go back to BF2's way of handling things you could use. They should've kept that, where you had to destroy certain things to hinder the enemy commander in using things, then you had to use engineers to get them back up. And now you have to hold points to be able to use things? Like, it's the opposite of what it should've been. This doesn't balance it out, it's more like whoever gets first to the objective is the winner if both commanders are in play. If the enemy got all the points, what the hell are you supposed to use? You have absolutely nothing to help out with, and the enemy got EVERYTHING in the world. This is what I've gotten from just looking at gameplay. Unbalanced ridiculousness.

Tl;dr, one of the worst and least fun singleplayer campaigns ever (I do enjoy a good singleplayer experience), a mediocre multiplayer mode which doesn't improve anything from the previous game, a spoiled return of commander mode and an extremely buggy and laggy game overall.

The sad fact is, they spent more time creating the game for the console tards than actually making a game for the general public and keeping it in the scheme of Battlefield 3. The graphics aren't as good as 3.
The worst part is, if you are playing on PC your game crashes far too much for enjoyable game play. What the hell was the beta for if they can't fix that pre release? Dice say they fixed the hitmarkers, this is a lie. There seems to be a lack of quality all round, The sound drops out, textures go away at times, sniping is made way to easy and the hud in jets and choppers is such a bad colour you cant see it at times while flying.
If I didn't know any better I would say the game was rushed to market.
The new aspect of course being commander. What a boring game mechanic, You sit there and do what? drop things strategically while your whole team is just messing about. Its a great concept but heavily floored.

Despite the above mentioned though, I enjoy Call of Battle, Modern Field Warfare. Though that could just be down to my squad

It's the same old with a glossy new finish, and a couple of tweaks that really should have been included much earlier (like being able to resume reloading). The first person story is a disaster. Not only is it predictable, it denies all sense, and loves riding the sino-russian thing to the grave. We get it. It's an easy idea to run off of. I paid you ~$70. Show me you deserve it. It's not enough to demand that much for basically the same game with only a new gloss--which wasn't really needed for the game experience (yay, realistic sun in my eyes... great, now can i have the key/control that lets me present my realistic hand to block the angle of the sun?.....? well? if you're going to waste so much time adding irritants, you're not doing yourself any favors here...)It's not enough to pay $70 to also update the game and essentially present it as a hacker-free environment... it's going to last for all of 3-6 months at best.

On to the interface. BF3 was ridiculously convenient for navigating squad settings, picking out your weapons and attachments, along with squad perks. It was very quick and easy to access this customization. Despite having played the beta and played this game for a while, the entire thing is still opaque to me. The amount of information available is a bit ridiculous, especially where it neither adds to the game, nor to the player's awareness of the fire-arms.

-3 for a ridiculous single player campaign. Single player was the main driving reason for which I buy games, it also has to be fun to play solo, and re-playable. Some stories are brilliant, and there are games I enjoy re-playing for the single-player component. The single player in this was trash. And that's ignoring the fact that a squad of mentally disabled children would have been more effective for helping you play through the single player than the AI that governs the single-player team-mates.

-3 for what is fundamentally a recycle with a spit-polish. I appreciate that there is only so much that can be done with an idea, but, really, I just don't see what Dice has tried to do in order to keep my loyalty apart from un-necessarily lavishing me with more guns to choose from. I expected the beta release to be fairly elementary. It's not the case. The beta is exactly what you will buy.

The maps aren't really designed for specific modes such as Rush and none of which are overly thrilling to play either. The overall product is riddled with bugs and many matches suffer chronic stutters in play with bursts of lag or just general dreadful texture issues.

The bullet detection is laughable with many players throwing hacking accusations when actually it's the game that is woefully inconsistent. With the poor map design; many matches just decline into complete carnage and adding the bugs to the equation, multiplayer just becomes tiresome and tedious. Frostbite 3 is barely a noticeable improvement compared to the jump BF3 made with its new engine. The destruction ceases to impress after a while and as matches become more erratic and chaotic; you'll barely have time to notice the alleged spectacular scripted crashes and bangs.

Kudos to EA though they have done a marvelous job of conning people with a glitzy presentation at E3. The finished product is nothing compared to the impressive portrayal that we saw at the show with the numerous gameplay videos. Battlefield 4 still feels as if it's in alpha-mode as this product is clearly not finished and is far too broken to deserve to be one sale. EA and DICE should be blocked from distributing any DLC until they rectify the bugs but even if this is done, the core game and its gameplay is extremely cumbersome, exhausting and shallow.

-the maps are not good. They are similar, not creative, not that interesting. After a few games, you've see, it all. They are also not very numerous, and if you want more, I guess you'll have to pay more.
-The levolution is... not impressive. It's just scripts that launch at a certain time of the game and it's... yeah, meh. They basically built their trailers around it, and it's bland in game.
-It's pretty much the same as BF3. I know a lot of people keep saying this, but it's true. It's the exact same thing, except two or three little things. And now that's a problem 'cause if you played a lot of BF3, no need to buy it. At all. Stay on the 3rd. For the first few hours, you'll have fun, then it will get boring very quickly and you'll regret the money you've spent.
Same thing for the people who didn't like BF3, you won't like BF4 either.
-They are selling a game $60 when it is barely playable. Crashes every 2 games, lags, freezes, bugs, ...
The game is clearly not finished. For such a price, it would be legitimate to expect a new polished game.
It's not new and not polished AT ALL.

I wanted to give EA a chance with this game after what they said. It was BF, I really thought they wanted to take care of the series, at least because it could be a mountain of money. They didn't. This game is a failure. Not a complete failure, some things are good, but still a failure.

Full of glitches and occasional game breaking bugs. The netcode is STILL bad, even after almost a dozen Battlefield games. I hope you like getting shot around corners before you even crest it! The menu is a complete mess of pretty colors and eye-searing white lines, making it difficult to navigate at all, and impossible to do quickly and efficiently.

Graphics are sub-par. The game dazzles you with lots of pretty colored explosions, but it can't hide the 2004 style textures and modelling.

Of course, you have to pay incredible amounts of money to get the full game experience.

I haven't even scratched the surface. This game is very sub-par. Basically just Battlefield 3.2

It's tragic, because BF2 was probably my favorite shooter of all time. But the series has just been so bad for so long. I'm done with it. And EA/Dice altogether.

Let me start by saying that what little of the game I have been able to play has been amazing. I would be giving this game a 9 or a 10 if it weren't for technical issues. I have been a fan of the Battlefield series since BF 1942. I have put many hours into the series from BF 1942, to BF Vietnam, BF 2, and BF 3.

As it stands, this game is unplayable. I would highly recommend that you wait until after the holiday season to buy this game. 8/10 multiplayer matches crash on me, or the sound cuts out, or you lose progress when you crash. I am unable to even finish the campaign in the mean time as that crashes constantly as well. This game should have been tested much more thoroughly. This is becoming a bad trend in gaming. Just like Total War Rome 2 and many other games, the early adopters are the beta testers. I've learned my lesson about buying games at launch for the time being. It's a couple weeks after launch and you would think the major issues would be ironed out. I put the game down for over a week thinking they would have hammered out the main issues, but it's just as bad as when it launched. They have not issued a client side patch (rumor is that they have to wait on the consoles review period for updates.) Do yourself a favor and wait, though I do recommend that you eventually pick it up, when you can play it is a blast.

Ok so Battlefield 4 is great if you have friends who you can play with. If you don't have friends then it's not that great. Graphics are awesome and all that but the biggest problem is that when you want to play the game there is a 50% chance that EA servers are down or just some other problem. If it didn't have those problems I would rate it 8/10.

God, I loved BF3, well balanced and designed maps for all game modes. Altought, BF4 is lacking some balance. In TDM mode, you spawn in front of an enemy sniper scope. The net code is horrible, we get killed with "one" shot. So many flaws that I can organize myself to type it in here.

The most important part of a FPS is hit detection and this game is a complete joke when it comes to that. Sometimes you will drop full health enemies with a quick burst of a SCAR across the map and sometimes you will have to pump 10 bullets into a guy right in front of you and to no avail.

Pre-game lobbies are still laughable. You wonder how DICE hasn't figured out how to transition between games. We just want a simple UI system so we can see the next map, and adjust our classes accordingly. Not have to click on some slow-loading screen to see the map, then ALT-Tab to adjust our class on battlelog. And refresh the page to make sure the changes actually will work.

The crashes. Oh the crashes. After their LATEST patch, I had two crashes back to back games. I won't say anymore to that, you probably have read enough about it.

A much needed positive to this game is that the longer you play, the better you will do. You have to acclimate to the game type and learn the best weapons, classes and perks to move about the map. I have been playing mostly domination recently, and after 8 hours of grinding the maps out, I'm starting to get consistently great games. I know how to approach the flags and how to use the spawns to my advantage. So in conclusion to this, practice makes perfect. There is a good size skill gap in this game.

Overall, I give this a 4 just due to the fact nothing has really changed,, and what has changed is mostly negative. (incredibly bizarre hit detection, crashing, etc. As a BF 1942 veteran, I'd rate this as my 5th favorite battlefield. If you are new to the franchise, I'd recommend it and tell you to stick with it, and your game will improve. If you are on a budget and don't have 100+ dollars to dump in a game, I wouldn't justify it.

EA management have shown some serious contempt for their customers, because selling this game in its original state must have bordered on illegal. It just didn't do what it was supposed to...ie : play.

After 3 months of constant updates and patches, its better (ie: It actually plays, most of the time), but there's still loads wrong or flawed within the game.

Overall, BF4 is good looking when it works but the endless flaws are difficult to accept when you've paid a premium price, for a second rate game.

The amount of times I find myself instantly jumping 100 to 0 health is outrageous. Suppression was a good concept in Battlefield 3, and it returns edited. It is still, unfortunately, terrible. I have lined up hundreds of shots with a carbine only to miss every shot because an enemy with a light machine gun fires one bullet near me. There is still a stupid amount of lag in servers, even with 30- ping, which to me is unacceptable. The game simply does not have a high enough server refresh rate, so what you see and what your enemies see are often different, resulting in the earlier mentioned instant health drop. Hitboxes actually fall behind players sometimes, so what should be a hit is sometimes displayed with no hitmarker, no damage, but blood from the enemy. This can be proven on the test range, which actually is nearly useless considering there are very few realistic situations available. By this I mean there are a few slow UAVs, a few motionless boats, and a couple buggies.

Now for the campaign. There's really not much to say about the campaign because there is really not much to it. All it is is pointless cursing and shooting. There may have been a plot that I missed, but for the most part it could just be an interactive Michael Bay film. There are silly cutscenes, situations, you name it.

The only way I would ever recommend this game to anyone is if its bugs are fixed entirely. The multiplayer has a good base, but EA just decided to rush another game out the door, creating possibly the biggest disappointment of 2013 for me personally. I had the intention to pre-order premium, but wow am I glad I didn't.

Battlefield 4 - basically a dumb down and even more casualized (yes I made that word up) version of BF3 except with more customization.

This review is going to be directed toward players coming from BF3 and will be multiplayer focused, more of a comparison if you will.

Pro's compared to BF3 in my opinion.

-More variation and customization across the board including weapon accessories, weapons themselves, kit upgrades and gadgets.

-Improvement in overall sound quality (gun report echos etc)

    -More game modes

    -strengthened naval combat presence.

Now the Con's compared to BF3 in my opinion.

-Serious hit reg and lag issues (apparently being worked on alongside all the typical expensive EA DLC)

-Average projectile speed about 50% the speed of a comparable projectile in BF3 (everything that can be fired moves much slower then it's BF3 counterparts to the point of feeling as if some weapons are more similar to space weapons (see halo series covenant weapons). This makes for much more drug out fights over medium to long distances especially with most vehicle weapons.

-Bullet spread and inaccuracy even higher then in BF3, (you want to see a newer FPS game doing small arms right?, give Insurgency a try.

-Even more conquest uncap spawn rape then BF3 matches normally experience.

Now taking these con's into consideration from what I've experienced in-game this has turned BF4 into more of an imprecise game of chance and guesswork where your PDW and carbine bullets move at the speed of your average pellet gun (meaning firing at a guy 50m away running to the side requires you to shoot an absurd and unrealistically far distance ahead of him to hit) and your 120mm tank cannon acts more like an over-sized potato gun or T-shirt launcher rather then a real cannon. (No biggie at 1 kilometer you only have to aim approx 100 feet above target to be on).

Now I know this game isn't mean't to be all about realism etc but they definitely took an even bigger step away from reality, competitiveness and skill based gameplay with BF4 compared to BF3. Obviously they're choosing to make it more approachable and tolerable to lower skilled and casual players so as to sell more but this version is beyond something I can enjoy playing online. Its much harder to consistently hit targets with most weapons at further ranges, thus forcing players to get very close to each other before being able to engage semi-reliably.

This game will do just fine as the market for casual gamers is huge. (see last 5 years of COD clones for proof) But for those of us that enjoy a stronger level of teamwork, realism and skill in our games It's safer to stick with BF3 or even better yet BFBC2, both are much better games then BF4 in my opinion even with their age and lack of refined customization and weapon variety.

I don't believe for one second that microtransactions and DLC are inherently bad. But how they're implemented can either enhance the game and make the developers a lot more money, or can completely ruin the experience. In Battlefield 4, it's the latter. It's one thing to include a microtransaction system in a free-to-play game. But when your game costs $60 USD, you're already pushing it. BF4 continues to be updated with expansion packs, which cost $15 each. Sure, you can just not buy them- but good luck finding a server that doesn't require them! Even servers playing on stock BF4 maps still regularly reject players who do not have the expansion packs installed. Players can also pay money to skip leveling (a feature common across almost all next-gen titles, unfortunately) and get a "premium membership" where their XP earned is doubled. This trend of "double XP" modes in games has already made the EXP/leveling system pop up in games where you'd least expect it as a cheap cop-out way to add microtransactions into the game. The worst part of paying to skip leveling is the massive number of inexperienced little kids running around with all the best weapons in the game because they got a hold of their mom's credit card. It totally ruins the balance of the game.

On top of all that, Battlefield 4 just isn't that much different from its predecessor to warrant me forking over $60, or more like $100+ if I actually want to play. Levelution is naught but a gimmick. 90% of the time, levelution-based changes to the map are purely aesthetic and hardly affect gameplay at all. And when you consider how slow the server connections are, even on the fastest fiber optic connections, and how buggy and unstable the game is, you're better off sticking to BF3.

Which means you'll be paired against people who have the best upgrades and you're armed with stock. That sounds fair right? Yeah I know.

The servers are absolute garbage, with lag all over the place (even with my 54 ms connection). People will dash across your screen and gun your ass down without even looking at you. Other times, you'll have the drop on them, pump 12 bullets into their chest, and still get killed with two bullets... from the guy who had to turn around to kill you. Bravo Dice. The disparity between weapons is mind boggling, with pistols (that use higher caliber rounds) doing barely any damage compared to assault rifles. The map are set up in a way that allows for spawn camping and vehicle camping, ensuring that your mismatched teams will produce one sided battles. As stated, the matchmaking is a joke and you'll be paired with idiots 99% of the time while fighting against clans or players who play together. Real balance right there folks.

Performance wise, the game is a mess. On my 3rd gen i5 HP with 6 gigs of ram, the game takes TWO whole goddamn minutes to load a map. Two whole minutes of watching a screen load while everyone else is having fun. And if you are really lucky (like me), you'll get singled out for PunkBuster's inability to properly configure its damn self 5 seconds into the match, requiring you to mess around with Firewall settings to get the program to function PROPERLY. Something the damn thing should be able to do on ITS OWN. The game is poorly optimized and its anti-cheating software can't even install itself properly.

I got the game solely for multi-player, based on the Xbox 360 gaming I did with BF4. But goddamn is this a mess.Weapon balance issues, repair exploits for helicopters, and other issues marr the experience. Good grief, stay away from this hunk of garbage until they fix it.

They took a mode that was fun and great in bad company 2 and completely screwed it up. Having to unlock guns and accessories makes the game very unfriendly towards newbies, even veterans of the battlefield franchise. The premium edition... dont get me started... This game is a joke, ever since they codified it they killed off the fun factor of the game... However, no points for multiplayer. A total and utter failure so far! DICE, if you think I will fork another £50 for BF 5 you can think again. Unless you properly fix this pronto!

And what is with the veeeerrrryyyyy looooong unlocks?!! It is too tedious, boring and if not fixed, is going to lose even more players.

I hit this guy running towards me with 5-7 LMG bullets he keeps running towards me and kills me with 1 pistol shot!!! WTF?!! This is supposed to be a game, an enjoyable activity... When you die 9 times out of 10 (probably more actually), it is tedious.

I am an very good CoD 4 player it is strange how bad I can be on BF4. Either PB is rubbish and these guys are cheaters or BF 4 is broken beyond repair!

The graphics is much better than Battlefield 3, and finally the maps aren't just 50 shades of blue. Sound is still in a class of it's own. DICE has reintroduced Commander mode, squad leaders aren't a joke, and a commo rose that works. Changes to the server listing in Battelog means it's quite feasible to run settings close to classic Battlefield without having issues with filling it up.

So on paper, there's a lot to look forward to. But both single player and multiplayer are almost completely ruined by a few but very important core issues. Note I do not mention co-op because Battlefield 4 has no co-op, a surprising and sad move in my opinion.

In the case of the single player it's the story. Sure it's a corridor shooter, but even those can be interesting if the story is good, for example like Spec Ops: The Line or Medal of Honor (2010). While the story in Battlefield 4 isn't as bad as in Battlefield 3, it is not a whole lot better. It contains a handful of bland characters doing things that make no sense, with tons of boring cut scenes and highly predictable plot devices. By trying to make the story as "epic" as possible DICE has completely lost sight of what makes a good and engaging story. In the end the single player is a boring interactive movie which you grudgingly grind through just to unlock a few weapons for the multiplayer.

Now, singleplayer is one thing, but what keeps people player Battlefield has always been it's multiplayer. With gorgeous visuals, rich and engaging sound scape it's hard not to be impressed, even after playing Battlefield 3. However there are a couple of things which are essential to a good multiplayer shooter, and as Team Fortress 2 shows, it's not super-realistic graphics.

The basics are gun play and netcode. Sadly Battlefield 4 fails miserably in both categories. First, the direction the bullets travel and the direction the barrel is pointing are just vaguely correlated in Battlefield 4. Players who are good at controlling the recoil and keeping the aim on target will be punished. Snipers who are quick to react and get the crosshairs back on target will miss. This creates a serious disconnect with the weapons. Add the toned-back-but-still-present suppression effect and you often find yourself thinking you're shooting blanks.

Worse is the netcode. DICE has finally come out and said that improving the netcode is a high priority for them. However the issues that plagues Battlefield 4 has consistently plagued Frostbite games since Bad Company 2. They've had 4 PC shooters using the Frostbite engine with the exact same issues. In my view the most frustrating issues are client-side hit detection and broken chronology, meaning you get hit and die from someone you haven't seen shooting yet, who is pointing a completely different direction or is behind a wall. They are somewhat intertwined, but Bad Company 2 had chronology issues yet with server-side hit detection.

The netcode issues affects vehicles as well. Lock-on warnings which sound immediately before the rocket hits, etc.

With the absolutely fundamental issues more or less completely broken, it's a real struggle to have any fun playing multiplayer. If you just want to sit on a hill, have a few beers and take potshots at the enemy running around some flag then it's not half bad. But it is very far away from being a serious shooter.

Which is sad in a way, as one easily senses there's a lot one could like about Battlefield 4 had it not had vinegar all over it.

I have not bought it and never will. I have been wanting the strategy & gameplay of BF2 & BF2142 to be the starting point and be improved upon. Despite the gunplay, graphics & sound all improving the gameplay has unfortunately followed Call of Duty formula: Ultra fast TTK and Ultra fast gameplay. TTK is so low and life time so short that you are really just dying constantly. The only way to survive is to fly or drive around with your friends repair spamming, but even then when you get focused everything is so weak your destroyed. Don't bother. At this very moment they're already working on BF5 which they'll announce 6 months from now and the same drones will thoughtlessly fork out the cash.

Why can't they at least offer a competitive option that allows players to play on their favorite local servers with high tick rates and no lag compensation? I prefer a smooth, challenging, honest, and skilled gameplay over the ability to play with someone over 500 miles away! Hell, I would pay premium for an elite or competitive version of the game that would allow this. The masses can be provided a regular version of the game at discount and continue to be satisfied by the randomness of kills and deaths in their games, no matter how good or bad their internet connection is.

Single Player Campaign is short, forgettable and full of painful scripts. Well, I know it's FPS and I shouldn't expect a long-lasting action competing with any Grand Theft Auto's storyline, but please; if I am a noob amongst plenty of skilled players, then I would really like to enjoy the game alone. Playing against computer does not frustrate and an interesting story would really aid in keeping me playing.

First of all, this game was not ready for release, there are so many bugs and glitches that need to be patched. The beta was clearly a monumental waste of time because I am pretty sure that most people had less issues with the beta than the actual main release. That problem by itself however was not enough to make my opinion of BF4 so bad. Although I could write for an hour or two about all of the bugs, I am just going to leave it at that.

The other main problem that I see is that DICE seems to have forgotten its fan base. Us Battlefield fans are very loyal and I feel like we stick with BF even when times are tough. However, this game is such an abomination and bastardization of previous renditions that I could hardly call it part of the Battlefield franchise at all. BF4 is basically tailored to COD and Halo fans. The remnants of military realism that BF3 had are gone. What we are left with is an arcade type shooter that could be equated to COD with vehicles. All my life I have known the saying of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Why did DICE take a franchise that was essentially not broken and just about perfect in numerous ways, and change everything about it?

With all that being said, I still think there are many great things about BF4. I am just very disturbed by the direction that the Battlefield franchise is going in and I hope that the true Battlefield fans stand up and make their voices heard.

OH AND ONE MORE THING!!! Any moron who complains about single player isn't a true Battlefield fan. If you were a real BF fan you would appreciate that there is a single player in the first place because Battlefield isn't about single player AT ALL. Who cares about the campaign? All that should matter in a Battlefield game is the multiplayer. PERIOD. I am pretty sick and tired of seeing crappy reviews based on single player. The first game that even had a single player in BF was BFBC I think. So seriously, stop whining about the campaign.....if that is really all you got the game for then you are an idiot for wasting $60.

Battlefield 4 is certainly one of the bigger FPS titles in the year 2013 but it is also one of the biggest disappointments. Major selling point of this game is as you probably already know vehicular warfare, team oriented gameplay, level destruction and beautiful graphics. It does all that, however, not to a point this game would be enjoyable.

The first impression is very good, you start off on a what looks to be decently engineered map in a beautiful environment. The real disappointment starts when you begin actually playing. There is no co-operative gamemode (which to be honest is partially a good thing as it was terrible in the previous game), the campaign is disappointing and there is a lot of issues with the engine at the moment of writing this review.

    Pros:
    - Decent graphics
    - Many weapon unlocks for your soldier
    - Decent voice acting in the campaign

    Cons:
    - The campaign is much shorter and much worse than in it's predecessor (it feels as if not much effort was put into it might have just skipped the campaign altogether instead of releasing a disappointing one)
    - Vehicle unlocks are still around (yes, your jet fighter will be a pathetic piece of junk with nothing to fight with when you get inside)
    - No hardcore mode on release
    - All guns are toys, they deal almost no damage (at the moment of writing this review, hardcore mode is not implemented yet)
    - Map scale too large (in Conquest mode and similar) for the amount of players supported by the engine (active fighting is usually in only one point of the map, whereas the remaining points are half the time empty, one starts to wonder where is that all out war gameplay)
    - Numerous engine issues such as broken shaders (objects appear completely black at times), crashes, campaign at certain points unplayable due to bugs (requires checkpoint/mission restart)
    - "Levolution" (level destruction/environment changes) is always the same and gets boring rather quickly

In addition to the above, it seems polish/russian players cannot play the game in English without downloading localization and cracked exes which is ridiculous (polish players can pick Russian, but not English???).

NOTE: I have been trying to debug some of the issues on my end such as doodling with drivers and so on, this is not a dumbfire review

I can see other peoples reviews where they say the "audio is top class, perfect" and such.
I can count at least two maps where the sound just cuts out in the middle of the map.

Yes, the game has it's positive sides. But for me, there's too much bugs to be squashed,
balancing to be done, and fine-tuning to be done before it can come close to being all-round
confortable to play. Just my two cents worth.

Honestly, the multiplayer is barely playable at times and is so glitchy with rubber banding and kicks that it has been virtually unplayable most of the time. Perhaps it would be wise to wait at least another couple of months before you look into getting BF4. Also, single player was very average and lacked any depth in my humble opinion. Either way, don't buy it for this platform until it is fixed. Expand

Broken and buggy is Battlefield 4,Crash after crash, missing sound/textures, terrible hit reg, awful blur effect(added last patch?)grass physics removed last patch?... the list goes on and on.

Game is super disappointing and frustrating to play due to loss of progress because of the constant crashing.

I have given up playing until they release a miracle patch that can fix this abomination.

Battlefield 4 is the latest but not greatest addition to the battlefield series by EA/Dice. The game is a FPS shooter with vehicles at your disposal with the addition of “commander mode”. The classes and guns are similar to battlefield 3, and the maps are better designed. The shooting mechanics and graphics are solid, however, this is really the only highlight of the game. There are many problems with performance such as glitches, crashes, frame rate drops, I have a gtx 770 oc, i5 processor, 8gb ram. I should be able to max this game out, but I can’t because doing so would make the game crash more often than not and slow the frame rate down to a crawl in some areas of the map. There are endless bugs which are not being patched soon enough, I have 20 hours in this game, so far I have experienced sound loops and muting, freezing, being stuck and unable to move and whats worse is that some of these bugs are similar to battlefield 3.
The “levelution” idea seems great on paper, but impractical in reality since it’s triggered at the start of most games (apart from parcel storm) and only really makes a significant change to a small portion of the map, it’s essentially a gimmick. The commander mode requires you to be at a certain level, and even then most matches are one sided with one team having a commander and the other team doesn’t since commanders can call in gunships or call in missiles at any point of the map. This significantly unbalances the game as there is no AI to take over as commander. Vehicles handle the same as bf3 but there are some nerfs to the tanks with the addition of ammunition on the main cannon.
I will forever be against “premium”, mainly because of the fact that it was advertised before the game was even out, and gives an unfair advantage to queue jump making joining popular servers and playing with friends near impossible. And the weapons you get from premium will give players a significant advantage over those who didn’t buy into the DLC.
If you are looking for a game which made a significant improvement on graphics, gameplay style and performance than battlefield 3, this is not it and it would be best to stick with battlefield 2 or 2142.

Don't waste your money. The multi-player is horrible, and the campaign is worse. You'll be thrown into objective after objective, with no real teamwork going on, and you'll be left trying to do everything yourself. The people that really seem to enjoy this game are those that either buy the premium to get the weapons and upgrades, or the people that are die-hard DICE fans.

When i think about what has been done better comparing it to bf3 i can count the things on one hand.
    - the squad system and orders combined with the commander adds a little bit more tactical variation to the public games
    - the little "counts as kill" feature if you almost killed a player and he then is shot by somebody else feels good not to have your kill stolen
    - the weapon settings and customizations are more complex and versatile
    THATS IT

i wont list all of the bad things bf4 has introduced but just some major points
    - the whole design feels weaker than bf3 at least, like a bad f2p ripoff
    - vehecles and weapons also feel worse
    - maps are horrible

and to add a nice topping the game is litterally almost unplayable because of gliches, bugs and crashes.

please believe me and do yourself a favor and dont buy this

Even the browser plug-in crashes requiring task manager to kill off the browser. If a lot of my friends weren't also playing I would have uninstalled this probably the same weekend I installed it.

There are audio issues like sound that cuts out, looping effects that won't ever stop for the duration of the map(The MCOM alarm on a conquest map is highly annoying), other random audio glitches like when you dive under water and come up and the sound is still muffled like you are under water still.

The scopes can become out of sync with the visuals so when you don't have the 2x zoom on its zoomed and when you do have it on its normal. Dieing is the only way to fix this issue. The hip fire reticle (on non-hardcore mode servers) just vanishes and reappears whenever it pleases.

The netcode is still abysmal and so far massively worse than BF3's from what I've seen. Even on servers with less than a 30ms ping.

Vehicle physics are a mess. Jeeps bounce like crazy. Jeeps can be flipped over, taken off jumps 50-60 feet in the air and take no damage, but hit something going faster than 10-20 mph and they explode. I'm talking like clip the front corner on a tree and it just explodes. Tanks have quite literally no weight. You can launch tanks 10-20 feet in the air off some pretty tiny bumps. You can damage a tank by driving a jeep full speed at either the back or front and send the tank sailing through the air over the top of the jeep (What?!). The three tanks in BF4 are about 50-60 tons, pretty sure that isn't going airborne off a crater in the road.

Anyone that bought it and comments on the single player is missing the point. That should really be seen as a new players tutorial than a stand-alone

This is playing on a machine that's a several thousand dollars so its not my hardware. Playing the game on a 2560x1440 resolution monitor on medium settings and you generally sit around the frame cap of 200FPS.

But more often than not you spawn into game without a gun, get killed seconds after hiding behind cover, audio cuts off, unload a whole magazine into someone 2 feet away looking the opposite direction yet not getting 1 hit marker, rubber banding every couple feet ect.

What could have been an amazing game was clearly pushed out the door before it was complete. So you essentially paid full price for a game that is still in development, and even now 6 months after they are the game is still full of bugs that have not been addressed. And if you were part of the unlucky ones who paid 60 dollars for a "full" game plus another 50 for the premium service you paid 110 dollars for a game that 6 months after launch is still not fully functioning as intended, something that should have been sorted out before they take your money.

But as I said, when it works, its amazing. Graphics are beautiful with some additions that just seemed like gimmics and where poorly thought out. Outside of operation locker your screen will go completely white as the snow storm kicks in which doesn't allow you to see anything. The sandstorm while looks cool from a gameplay perspective is completely pointless as you are just looking at a dirty screen with little triangles off in the distance. Gunplay is inconsistent you can get 1 shotted by someone yet at the same time you can empty magazine landing every bullet and not 1 hit marker. So the gunplay doesn't boil down to skill but rather is determined by luck and the engine if it wants to work properly or not.

I wanted to like this game so much however I cannot justify the price tag of a AAA title that is nonfunctioning. Before the game was released I was one of those who watched the interviews and read up all about it about how much better BF4 is going to be than BF3. About how much more responsive the gameplay will feel and how much better the netcode is. It was described as "magic", "snappy", and "responsive". All of which was a lie, that is what BF4 feels like to me, a lie. What was promised and paid for in full price was never delivered.

Dear god the gunplay is the most atrocious I have ever experienced in any first person shooter ever. The netcode is TERRIBLE, it has largely remained unchanged since launch. I highly doubt DICE will ever be able to fix it due to complex technical issues being so deeply rooted into the game code.
To add to the above, there is a suppression mechanic which involves screen blur, weapon recoil

To add to the above, there is a suppression mechanic which involves screen blur, weapon recoil increase and optic sway. Then there is visual recoil where your optic doesn't actually reflect where your bullets are going. Then there is flinching which makes your gun randomly jump every time you're hit. The combination of all of this means BF4 completely fails the "shooter" part of "first person shooter".

3/10 for the sheer ambition, scope and variance in gameplay and vehicle combat. I will not forgive DICE/EA for knowingly releasing a massively unfinished product, then following it up with claims that the game was ready for release. As of May 2014, Battlefield 4 is still unfinished (in my opinion) and has some way to go before it could be called a polished product.

How about the fact that I got this with my Radeon R9 graphics card for free and it still is horribly flawed and it's on the border of hatred?
The main reason this game is horrible is because this game is carrying a **** ton of bugs that DICE and EA are ignoring. Oh, and also, the single player is a broken piece of ****.

Even if multiplayer wasn't buggy, Battlefield 4 would still only be a barely passable installment in all respects besides the snazzy graphics. EA and DICE played it safe by providing the same thing they did the last time around, with another phoned-in campaign and only minor alterations to the online.

Battlefield 4 keeps soldiering on in the same footsteps as previous games in the series. The lack of worthwhile news makes you wish for more. Dice stays in its comfort zone calls for explosions and not much more. The series needs to evolve or fade out.
