    Ok short:
    What sx there:
    1) A main story (plot) quite pathetic...seems like it was created just in 2-3 days before the release. Dumb emotions, dumb dialogues...nothing epic or dramatic at all! (Only kill kill kill revenge revenge drunk revenge kill kill) Even a Black Flag got 3+ dramaepic moments. 2) Music....is there any music? lol Ive heard only in credits after completin a game.

Ive heard only in credits after completin a game. Because its quite ordinary and quiet. Again if we remember Black Flag (specially main theme) - epic epic epic.
    3) Optimization...there no f optimization in this game)) So forget about to play normally for few daysweeks till UnterSoft patch it.
    4) Activities and gear - sux. Wtf you tried to beat a Sherlock by addin an investigation missions? You failed. Gear looks good but if you dont want to participate in some Club stuff - you wont get a really good-lookin and useful.
    Ok now good side:
    1) Graphics....yeah yeah with awesomely crappy optimization it looks good. I cant call it NEXTGEN...but something like a PreNextGen.
    2) Movement. Yeah tricks and parkour became quite smooth and bett-ah. But still we can face some stupid fails with jumping on wrong walls and sides.
Well thats it. Lmao but Unity sked from Black Flag and even a ACIII.

The technical issues (framerate, bugs, getting stuck in geometry) alone should prevent anybody from giving this a 10/10 score. Case closed. You can't reward something a perfect score that has so many glaring technical issues. ( My pc can't handle tthis game above of 25 FPS) It's a terrible technical mess of game.

2 x gtx 980. i7 4770k, 16gb of ram and ssd, game is still sluggish compared to others. If they fix optimization ill give 2 more points, The scifi setup is stupid and ruins the immersion often, Movement glitches make sneaking almost impossible. Everybody has British accent in France, NPCs run against walls, glide everywhere and warp stupidly on objects. 1 point for trying to make co-op.

First of all I want to say: this game is a masterpiece.
Amazing graphics, great story, an astonishing action-adventure placed in the middle of the french revolution.

Hilariously dreadful. Ubisoft's reach clearly exceeded their grasp here. Probably the worst technical execution of a AAA title in just about forever (and given the disaster that was Battlefield 4 that's saying a lot).

Which is a pity because it *could* (and may still be after 3 months or patching) have been an astounding game but at the moment it's astounding for all the wrong reasons.

Can you play the game in state it is right now? Barely. Will you enjoy it? Definitely not.
Sorry, but I refuse to accept that FX6350, 16GB RAM and R9 280 3GB OC is not enough to get decent frame rate. On LOWEST settings fr will drop in some places to 15. It is totally unstable. It doesn't hold same frame rate for longer

What's interesting - on high settings was almost the same!
It looks like it doesn't react much to settings you run.
Unity is just not ready. Initiates website recognizes only my AC IV Black Flag. Companion app crashes and I'm losing progress - waist of time. Because some chests and unlocks can't be done without online features - you're screwed.

Each room is so sumptuous and gorgeous I have spent lots of time just wandering looking at art. I am not even progressing the game much because now I am just walking around the town marvelling at the buildings. All those NPCs speaking French make me feel like I am there. The detail is stunning. The gameplay is secondary. Sure, that hasn't changed much from AC1. But that isn't the point. This game is a work of art. I can't wait to get to Paris. Expand

UBI toke out the ships, whats up with that? It's as if black flag should have released after unity. Very displeased with it but as long as it plays/launches then i'm giving it atleast a 1 for that and low GFX don't look much different than high, sound quality like someone falling into the ocean sounds like a blown speaker or just plan terrible audio programing. Looking at 1/10 sorry.

Soon after posting this review, I did some more playing and ran into some glitches of my own for the first time, one where I hung from an imaginary edge or something and one where I stood on an imaginary box it seemed, could not do anything so I only way to continue was to restart from last checkpoint.. From all the lag spikes that interrupt in the middle of a battle can make it unplayable and very unenjoyable so due to that, I am dropping the score down to 0 since the game cannot be played due to lag spikes and so many glitches. I am currently using latest updates.

Unplayable with GTX 770. I don't care about fps but Unity stutters, lags and freezes every 3 seconds. Fps goes 0-18fps and 22-25fps. Low settings wont help because it still stutters and lags, and looks like PS1 game.

I bought Unity to my Xbox One and now I can atleast play it.

    Worse PC port of mankind.

I always was a massive fan of AC series, mistakes or not. But after some weird parkhour in Brotherhood and crazy low boston fps in AC3 (had core2quad@3ghz back then) this is by far the worst. Not only it takes all the bad thigs from those earlier titles, moving dynamics are even worse, sluggish and weird. This was clearly developed for gamepad and no energy was spent for mouse+keyboard adoption. You really need 60fps, on locked 30fps (like on consoles) your mouse lags massively! Missions can get on your nerves at times, but the worst thing is you have no checkpoints at some harder stealth missions (read on for this):

On older titles you tried many times to see what you can do better or where your mistakes cost you the most. And it was fun at least. This? No mistakes or you never finish your mission. Just stupid. This is the first game in more than 20 years to actually fry my nerves and wanting a button to just skip a mission for a later time! Not because it's hard in a good way, but because it sucked the fun out of me. In the end I just finished the main story on easy as quickly as possible and deleted the game.

    2. The game with all the technicals.

    1:
If I was to just review the game itself discarding all the technical issues I would say the game is f*cking amazing. Ubi has significantly improved upon the existing game and has brought the game back to the vision of AC2. A stealth focused game. Heaps to do, love the new parkour system, makes running through areas with chest high walls not a problem. I hate the new combat system, the only reason I hate it is because its really hard, which is a good thing. This time around you actually need to try. Lots of new animations to the game. Your character feels like he as weight and mass. The crowds are massive but don't serve any purpose other then to fill the streets. So there pretty much useless. The story seems average. I have not completed it but its hard to keep up. Co-Op seems like a good idea but is heavily broken (Will discus in second part of review) and theres character customization. Heaps of gear and weapons to buy. So that sums up the experience and I would give it and 8/10

    2:
Now, this part will explain everything I stated above but with the FPS/Stuttering/Freezing/Random Audio Loss included. I'll cut right to the chase. This is bullsh!t, the game is unplayable. Constant stuttering, FPS drops. ABSOLUTELY UNPLAYABLE. You walk down the street and your character starts teleporting around and the game freezes and all of a sudden your some where else. I can handle the minor issues like A.I f*cking up, texture popping, A.I randomly appearing. BUT I CANNOT HANDLE THE STUTTERING AND FPS DROPS. 4/10

Side note: The game features micro transactions to allow you to unlock equipment faster. W.T.F Ubi, are you trying to be the next EA.

It's an undeniably beautiful game, if your PC can handle it (it's a bit of luck I suppose combined with good hardware) The graphics are a marked improvement over the previous game, but I was running at pretty high settings. The game goes back to the more classic AC style; running around a gorgeous city rather than the dullness of colonial American architecture or the Caribbean. With the addition of the interiors of many buildings, it really does feel more immersive.

The story gets off to an interesting start, the main character, Arno, is the son of an Assassin, who's father is killed is then taken in by a Templar and raised with his step sister; Elise. The story is primarily focused around assassinations, each sequence being quite short (there's 12 of them) and most involving one of the excellent assassination missions, which there are a bucketful of ways to approach each one, a couple of them having unique kills and all of them having tens of ways to infiltrate the area. These are the highlight of the main story. The ending is rather lackluster, it could have been implemented much better. The rest of the story however is exciting and while I was playing it I couldn't stop myself going for the next mission. I constantly wanted more. I still want more. Another downside is if you enjoy the modern day story, there isn't really much of it.

The side missions are rather good, there's hundreds of them seemingly, I haven't got through them all yet. The "Paris Stories" are the main ones, where you follow mini campaigns of citizens of Paris, solving their problems (which mostly involves killing people). There are also social clubs, which provide you with 3 missions each, each offering a cash reward, some very small, some very significant. Again, mostly these revolve around killing people.

Onto the coop mode. It worked most of the time for me, on release day it was having some trouble, as UPlay was offline, but when it worked it was really fun. I was playing with randoms but it would have been much more fun if my friends played it, so we could have some kind of coordinated effort. Killing two people in sync though is as satisfying as it looks on the promotional material. It's a joy to play and the missions are actually quite long, and can be played alone if you're up for the challenge.

The new combat system is a nice refresher for the boring simplicity which has plagued the previous games. Weapon tiers actually matter now, increasing damage and the health bar is back from the Ezio games, and the kill streak function is gone, to make it harder for you to take on large sums of enemies. This makes stealth a much more important factor in areas with lots of guards. The smoke bomb function is a useful one, but it has been nerfed a bit so that you cant kill everyone just by dropping one. It's mostly useful for running away or surprise attacks.

The free running mechanic has been upgraded and it looks and feels smoother than ever. It's more refined with the addition of the downward parkour being wonderful, it feels really good when you get it right. The motions look fluid and the running looks excellent. Overall it feels a bit different to old AC games in the free running regard, a nice improvement.

Now for the micro transactions. Honestly, if nobody had told me beforehand, I wouldn't have even known that they were there. The top tier gear is quite expensive but once you have cash rolling in from Café-Théâtre, it really doesn't take that long to get the cash, no longer than the best gear took in AC:IV. The companion app is absolutely dreadful however, I have no clue how to use it after spending about 15 minutes trying to fathom it and then giving up, as is the AC Initiates crap.

In summary, if your PC can handle it, it's one of the best games in the series yet, despite its disappointing ending, I've still had the most fun in this iteration of AC than I have since brotherhood. It was a good decision to go back to the original AC formula, and it has worked very well. It's visually stunning, the architecture is interesting and there's plenty to do. It's absorbing and immersive, with interesting combat and excellent free running. I can't recommend it enough.

Although I, myself, haven't experienced as bad technical issues as other people, the game is still disgraceful in its current state; for a "finished" game to be released with these problems, while Ubisoft blames AMD for their own incompetencies, in 2014, Ubisoft Montreal really has brought shame to their names and to their products after this shocking display of lethargy and carelessness. Still, I can't say that the product was COMPLETELY awful. I am finding the story to be enjoyable and creative, while giving the characters personalities that I've fallen in love with; it's just a shame that they've decided to hide this positive aspect underneath all the garbage they've thrown on top of it. -Arno is like a cheap Ezio.

Dear Ubisoft, cant you see that the Anvilnext engine is a crap since AC3? Drop that thing and make a new one, or just go back to the AC2 engine.I will survive if a new AC wont coming next year because of that.
Anyway the game is a broken, half-finished mass. And I can surely say that Shadow of Mordor is the best Assassin's Creed in this year.

    Pros:
    - Great Graphics and acting
    - That shoehorned and useless competitive multiplayer mode was eliminated

    Cons:
    - Horrible optimization, full of bugs and glitches. By far Ubisoft's worst port after Splinter Cell Double Agent
    - The Animus's story is boring, rushed, clichéd and uninteresting. The modern is almost non-existant with a really insulting ending
    - Co-op was an interesting idea, but it was poorly developed
    - Uninteresting and boring side quests
    - Gameplay, despite some minor tweaks, is still the same from 2007
    - Fighting still looks like a bad turn-based ps1-era jrpg
    - Stealth and AI are and absolute joke
    - Full of Microtransactions

If Assassin's Creed 3 was the jumping-the-shark moment for the franchise, Assassin's Creed Unity is what killed it for good. What happens next, I don't care about it anymore. I'm done.
Ubisoft has turned into the new EA. Don't waste 60 $ on this piece of garbage of a game, buy something else.

The new "free running system" is not helping anything. You will still rage and have the ENORMOUS frustration of not going where you want to; which will result in a lot of death in failed escape / runaways.

The gameplay itself have not changed at all since the first ACs (Plus it's missing the cool naval fights from the previous opus..).

Plenty of the main missions have not worked well for me; even some of the tutorials missions are off timing; resulting in many failures. (Most likely since Ubi are just copying their Gameplay and are not innovating anything with the series so only juniors work on this; resulting in bad gameplay / scripting / level design).

You will also find the obvious and oh plenty bugs and glitches (falling through the map, camera glitches, etc...). and the version is COMPLETELY BROKEN ON PC!!
I am having tremendous FPS problems whatever the settings I put with dual GTX 690 (or solo disabling SLI), i7-3930, 32gb DDR3...
And trust me; it is not an issue with drivers or whatever..

I absolutely loved the first 2 ACs; but trying my luck back: I can say this series is dead for me forever.
If you were on edge for this one: my two cents is dont buy it.

I think Im done with assassins creed, its been ruined.
The previous ones were so great! They mixed the present with the past, but now its just a mess.
Wait for the game to drop to half price before buying - its just not worth it.

Once the patch worked, the graphics are really good but I still would like a story line to follow not just random acts of violence with a mission in the middle.
The Co-Op is also forced on you, to unlock certain items which is stupid.

Oh well - I can safely say I will no longer buy assassins creed, they have even monotised 'hacks' the player can hack an item that is locked by paying for it WTF!?!?!?!?!

Lets not forget the train wreck that is UPLAY!
I am soo disappointed by this game its unreal, the previous games were so great (I personally like assassins creed 3).

Where ever ubisoft are trying to take the story, it just makes no sense.

stutters and dips - a slide show... it's COMICAL! A SHAME, I REPEAT!

BUT, NOW FOR MY BIGGEST ISSUE WITH THIS GAME: IT IS THE SAME **** GAME AS ANY OTHER "AC"!
THERE'S NO INNOVATION, CHARACTERS ARE UTTERLY BORING BLOKES (SAUSAGE FEST GALORE!) - IT IS THE SAME **** AS THE LAST "ASSASSINS CREED" game! oh, wait.... no, it's NOT exactly the same: "Black Flag" had the "PIRATING" part - WHICH WAS SUCH A GREAT THING!
EVERYBODY I KNEW LOVED USING THE SHIP, SAILING THE SEAS ETC.... whenever I had to go on land, it was a turn down and I was always glas as soon as I could board my ship again to roam the seas... ARRR!
that mildly "INNOVATIVE" part of Assassin's Creed is now gone....

basically, it is the same boring lame ****E again - SSDT, Same **** Different Title.
it becomes so incredibly boring and I hate UBISOFT for ruining a nice franchise, by keeping it the same for so long and AC always had massive problems, now they are still present, only in the umpteenth installment. I'm sick of it!

EVERYBODY WHO RATES THIS GAME WITH "7" (or even higher) IS RESPONSIBLE FOR UBISOFT'S POLICY OF "NEVER CHANGE A RUNNING SYSTEM" - and why the hell SHOULD they even change it, when there's still people actually PAYING for this ****?!

I PIRATED! and god am I thankful for doing it - that way I TESTED the game, decided that it was just THE SAME BORING **** IT HAD BEEN IN THE LAST 6 GAMES and DELETED IT!

I really hope more people wake up and start to VOTE WITH THEIR MONEY!

LET UBI KNOW AND FEEL THAT WE DO NOT WANT THE SAME GAME OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN! WE WANT INNOVATION! and boy had this game potential...

BTW: enjoy your performance on consoles (suckers!) - on PS4 the game runs on 20 FPS... and it still STUTTERS!

UBI claimed that 60 FPS would kill the "cinematic feel" of games on console...what a sad joke!
60 FPS is just higher fidelity - and even constant 30 FPS are much nicer, than stuttering 20 FPS ;)

THIS GAME IS NOT EVEN WOTH PIRATING! IT IS PURE ****!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll start by saying that I've played every single AC game ubisoft has released.
That being stated, and clear, I really tried to like this game, I mean I've been waiting for it for a lot of years now, and I got really hyped about it.
Note: I won't even speak about graphics or optimization, my computer ran if perfectly, thats all.
Now, lets get straight to the story. We all remember how the stories of the other AC games started really strong into action, sailing, getting born, etc. This game starts with you stealing an apple and then seeing your father die. You never get to that point in the story where you feel like you have enjoyed the game, or achieved something AT ALL.
Ubisoft focuses on changing combat for every single game, and this time, I have to say it feels clunky. Combat for AC 3 and AC: Blackflag was much better than combat this time. It just feels like if you play alone, you are done.
Parkour system is broken and unresponsive. That is all I have to say about it because it is frustrating. You can't do simple jumps from a surface to the other, but you CAN jump 10m from rooftop to rooftop.

Conclusion: I really tried liking this game, I've been expecting it and I've played them all. I mean if you are a real fan you know we've been expecting to see what happened to Desmond, but all the interaction we get with the outer world is a view from what seems to be a screen...

Oh well, you get a 4 because I loved your past games, but I'd rate this much lower. If you are a real fan, don't destroy your blackflag memories playing this one. Better skip it, it is not involved in the main plot anyways.

First off, I run this rig:

    AMD FX-8350 OCed to 4.4GHz
    12Gb DDR3-1600 OCed to 1877Mhz
    GTC 680 4GB edition, OCed
    Corsair Force GT SSD
    Windows 7 64bit

I got this game on Nov. 11th 2014. Did not have time to install until today.
First of all WTH! 5 dual-layer DVDs! That must be an awesome looking game!

    Not so much.

After 4 hours of installation (you read right, I should have downloaded rather than install from the disks), I got to install UPlay (update actually) then I get a 800Mb patch! Well I heard of all the glitches and bugs, so this might be a good thing.

I finally launch the game and get the intro/cutscene in 720p. Fine, I will boost everything later.

First mission is a pain in the A, constant lag, frame rate drop as soon as there is combat.
The "hacking" cutscene was not that bad, looks like the game found the "HD" button and raised to 1080p. Even though it's made to look "low res".

When I am done with the tutorials, and finally can go open-world, I find a chest! Yay!

Except it PROMPS TO DOWNLOAD THE APP ON MY PHONE to unlock it!!!

Ok fine, I will get the app.
Google Play store keeps "warning"/highlighting that there are micro-transactions in this app.

That app is 450Mb by the way, don't get this over 3G/LTE, you will kill someone...

When you find out that it runs as **** as the game! And you need to pay REAL CASH to buy in-app points to do missions that unlocks the in-game chests (apparently, I never managed to actually run the app, it kept crashing). Good wasted 450Mb and at least a chest that I won't open in a 70$ game...

First "sneaking" mission basically destroyed all hopes for a better game.
There is a "dense crowd", consisting of about 30 people. They have exactly 4 different skins. Later there is a "royal meeting" with hundreds of NPC, again, 4 skins for all of them, plus the 10 or so that glitch through the walls or hang in mid-air because they are too close to a pillar.

I stopped after 20 tries at the prison escape mission, because every combat that involved more than 2 enemies was so laggy that I could not land a "perfect parry".

All in all, other than the faces that look awesome in the cut scenes, this game got nothing new, nothing good looking, nothing working as intended and most important: UBI wants you to pay extra to access the content already on the install disks!

I live in Montreal, know a few people working at Ubisoft.
But I can't let this one fly, this is a **** game. Even EA makes better stuff. They try to grab as much money as possible but at least the stuff you pay for works.

The graphics are lackluster at best, even with everything at ultra and max post processing. Compare it even to console gta5 and you'll be disappointed. Low resolution texture abound, though there are some decent ones. The performance is horrible, on a core i-7 @ 3.1ghz with crossfired 6970s, a setup that runs crysis 3 and metro 2034 at 1080 resolution with max settings and decent (30+) fps, this engine cannot even manage that consistently at medium settings, were talking in the 20-40 range usually. Strangely, it is not the crowded areas, but just simply random places, that cause the most severe drops. The game crashes constantly on its own, without cause, and if you wish to tab out to view something on your browser, god help you if it still runs after that. The controls are horrible and generally respond badly to player commands, you'll see your character walking towards something while your hands are off the keyboard occasionally, and this is not during cutscenes. You will be forced to climb walls you did not aim at nor can have any use in climbing.
There is micro-transaction and companion app garbage that is required to significantly upgrade your equipment, if you try looting your way to an upgrade I fear it takes an eternity.
The story is dull but honestly that is the least atrocious sin ubisoft committed in ACU's production.
I purchased this game 3 weeks after its nov. 11th release, assuming the bugs would be patched out by this point, but sadly, its still plays like a beta FRESH out of alpha testing. Gamers need to heed this warning and stop buying/funding ubisoft and their ilk, for if you keep buying garbage, they will keep selling you garbage. Demand more, demand what game developers gave us in their pioneering days when they were struggling to eke out a profit, and perfection was the ideal, not record pre-orders.

The game is not as bad as the reviews show. The story was pretty good and graphics not bad at all for a 5 year old game. No performance issues playing with RX Vega 56. The gameplay just doesn't feel responsive and the game is buggy as hell. Overall a decent assassin's creed game nonetheless.

Then there's this great bug, that causes jumps/spikes when you're connected to the Internet...

My experience so far: needlessly pumped up minimum requirements, glitchy, bug-ridden, and this is after 4 patches... What it had to be at launch day I can't start to imagine. Unskippable intros. In one instance I attempted to move down into cellar to "rescue" an individual, where stealth was key I tried to avoid all enemies as much as possible, moving stealthily into position in the dead of night unfortunately Arno decided to hop from side to side alerting every character within eye view to my exact location drawing enemies from all areas. Ubisoft have tackled the moving down elements of scaling a building only to fail at the basic of moving down when at ground level. On a performance level it struggles along on an i7 3770K with GTX 970 FTW in tow, often dropping to the mid 20s, to be fair I am running at max, but why shouldn't I when I paid a lot of money to be able to max games out. The final nail in the coffin of this already emaciated, rotting corpse is Ubisoft's decision to include microtransactions in a £50 game. Pure unadulterated greed is all it can be described as. I really hope Ubisoft press the restart button on their next outing or this really should be in the end for them. My sympathies to the designers because it can look beautiful, unfortunately a lamborghini with no exhaust will blow itself out pretty quickly and this game has done so with so much style. A cobbled together mess that really needs updates, tout de suite. Expand

Besides, this game's way more than it's graphics. I haven't had the technical issues people are talking about, keep that in mind when you see I've given a high score.

first of all, this assassins creed is not about killing hundreds of enemies with a rapier without breaking a sweat. This assassins creed is about stealth, planning, and getting the better gear. Also, for once, the economy of the game is actually motivated. You're going to need that money to buy medicine, ammo, and new gear.

The city of Paris is stunning. I've been to Paris myself and they've really nailed the narrow streets, big squares, and the life of the city. Never before have I experienced an open game world so alive.

All in all, I love the new, more difficult, thus more rewarding crowd control combat. They've added some much needed free running controls. You are constantly rewarded for whatever you do in the world (similar to saints row 3). The downsides would be that it's difficult to find players for the 4-player missions. There are occasional graphical glitches that don't actually affect gameplay. "Stealthing" will initially be quite hard and you will probably die a few times, but this is why you'll spend so much time doing side missions to get the gear you want for your playstyle. The game could've been better optimised with fewer glitches, but this is a great game nevertheless. It's fun and it can played with French speech and English subs, which totally ads to the experience!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has good graphics and a large city area, but that's it. It is bugged, framerate issues, crashes often too. It has some fun missions, but not too much. It also manages to disrespect the history of the French Revolution in contrast to the fairness other historical events were treated in the Series. . Arno is the blandest character in the franchise, no interest, just cares about vengence and made to be too much of a do-gooder. The idea of a Templar-Assassin unity that was promised in the promotion get shelved since its entirely confined to a romance between Arno and Elise. With the exception of Bellec and the indecisiveness of the Assassin Council, the game is still Assassin Arno and Templar Elise versus even worse Templars, and there's no real attempt at unity. The entire French Revolution also gets shafted too for this love story. And they even do the love story poorly because Elise DIES and she's one of the few only intresting characters in the story!

Go play Assassin's Creed Rouge, Dishonored or Thief instead and spend your money elsewhere.

Awful game, and I've been an avid AC fan since the series first released. Story is somewhat choppy, but alright. The characters in the game aren't really developed all that well so very few characters you end up caring about. I will say the graphics are great, they definitely did a nice job with the tesselation on buildings and objects in the streets as well as the crowd size. I will say the graphics are great, they definitely did a nice job with the tesselation on buildings and objects in the streets as well as the crowd size. The game wouldn't be all that bad if it weren't for the combat system - the combat system ruins the game. The camera zooms in whenever you engage an enemy, making it so if more guys come, you can't see the majority of them until they hit you and the camera refocuses on them. One shot from a rifle and you're gone - half the time you can't see the aiming reticule to even know you're being shot at. Human shields have been removed, severely limiting your options as far as countering firearms in battle. You don't have enough time to parry against the more elite enemies so you constantly get your butt kicked in combat. Many great things from previous combat engines in AC have been removed - executions, counter kills, double executions, all the really cool animations, disarming enemies, throwing enemies, all that stuff is gone. All you have now is parry and dodge which basically ends up being just a button mashing fest and using smoke bombs constantly because if you engage more than 2-3 enemies, chances are you're going to die without using smoke bombs. This goes against everything the previous games were great with - you were supposed to be a bad a$$ fighter who, as long as you executed your moves properly, could engage multiple enemies in combat without issue.

So far I really hate this game and absolutely regret buying it. If the combat wasn't so god awful I could get past all the other stuff and kinda enjoy it, but the combat ensures that the whole game is nothing but frustration rather than fun. Thankfully AC: Rogue comes out for PC in spring, and from talking to a friend at work who has it for his PS3, it has the AC4 combat system and engine in it so I will at least have that one to look forward to. Really hope Ubisoft dumps the combat system from Unity for their next game. PLEASE take it back to the AC4 combat system which was really awesome.

Stay away from this one guys. Awful awful awful.

Requirements as of today with all the initial issues sorted out are adequate to what game represents and it is performing in a way typical for more advanced AAA games, unless you really have no clue what you are doing and you are choosing settings inadequate to your hardware. Some glitches still remain though and they may occasionally happen. As for game mechanics, they are significantly improved from previous parts. The range of movements is much bigger and Arno moves and performs much better and more naturally than predecessors. Stealth game is finally taken care of too. Combat is more realistic, slower paced and much more challenging than before, as well as stealth, there are also a lot of narrow interiors filled with enemies, so difficulty level has grown significantly from previous games. Character and equipment customization is also significantly better. So those are all good things. Unfortunately the story and how it is presented is the worst in the series. The story is not flowing, characters on both sides are insignificant, especially Assassins are the most boring and colorless in the series, complete lack of spirit, enemies are also not well shown and do not bring any emotions, you just don't feel any significance and threat from them, the game completely lacks the buildup for enemies, they are dead 1 minute after you discover them. The entire story lacks the definition. Even usually powerful things like death of people close to main character or his internal struggle do not make much impression, even on someone sensitive for such aspects. The entire revolution is also completely missing in the story, if not the chaos and disorder on the streets you would have hard time noticing any revolution at all. This is not what I expected from the game with such a great setting, potential was great but it was completely wasted. Still worth playing, because like I said in terms of visual fidelity and especially world's complexity and density this is the best of the best, mechanics are also good and challenging, character and equipment customization is there, this is all good and in this regard it has a lot of feel from previous games and even improves on that, but there is nothing behind it, the game is just not functionating as a whole. The game itself is pretty good if you have the hardware to run it. The missions are more assassin-like than previous entries, and you are genuinely challenged/force to think in many of them. The story is "meh", but the quality mission design and incredible recreation/ambiance of the city make up for it in my view. Coop is surprisingly well implemented, given you have enough friends with beefy PCs to play with you.

If you have the hardware to run it and enjoy the series, you will enjoy Unity. The gameplay and main missions are much better than in previous games. If you're on the fence and a casual fan, wait until the patches or inevitable "sequel" that will refine everything and run much better while possibly having a better story.

But it's metacritic, so of course the "this game sux!!!" reviews will be flagged as helpful.

The good news: Ubi actually listened to fans who wanted less hand-holding; more open ended assassinations. They even shelved the out of place if mechanically excellent sailing. Customization is also fantastic.

The Bad: The 3 main pillars of AC: Parkour, combat and stealth have always looked a LOT better than they actually played but in Unity this is taken to absurd levels.

Parkour in theory should allow the player more control with the added fast-descent, but a in practice only makes things more complicated compounded by the irregular Parisian architecture leading Arno jumping on things you don't want, refusing to climb or drop at all and getting stuck on objects constantly.

Stealth: I rejoiced when I saw we would finally have a crouch and cover system, believing they would simply rip the brilliant Watch Dogs version and use that. Actually, no. This has to be the most inconsistent, broken cover-system i've played since Mass Effect 1. Want to quickly get into cover? Well, my friend, press x to roll that dice,. because Arno may do as you ask.... or he may rather then going into the piece of cover you want go out of his way to slide into a doorway in full view of everyone. He may only go into cover if he's standing. Or crouching. Or he may automatically go from one of these stances to the other for no reason. He may go into cover nowhere near the corner, or more likely he will just refuse altogether. In classic AC fashion Ai, level design and guard placement and patrols are all over the place leading to the conclusion the devs have nary a clue of how to DO stealth. Combine this with the erratic, sticky Parkour and imprecise general movement and frustration exceeds blood-boiling levels,

Combat: Well it's harder - no REALLY this time. Unfortunately it's not for the right reasons. Sure they removed the press counter to literally set up a kill-streak to eviscerate every guard in the western hemisphere, and replaced it with a nice timed parry, and allowed guards to attack you together, but the delay in reponse to your commands means you will get killed through no fault of your own. And because the game automatically judges whether Arno is 'in' or 'out' of combat if you want to run good luck because you will have to fight the controls to force Arno out of the combat stance, which combined with the aforementioned delay means you will more often than not get impaled in the back by the time you get the game to respond to what you want. Batman Arkham this ain't.

Playing this game is one of the most heart-breaking and frustrating experiences I've had in gaming, because it's clear Ubisoft really listened to what people wanted and clearly tried to produce the ultimate AC - a game that SHOULD have been the pinnacle of the series. When things work the game feels beautiful. Unfortunately that is the problem. Things work about 20% of the time. For every time Arno balletically glides over a ledge and slides down a rooftop into cover, before seemlessly wrentching a guard round a corner to sever his carotid artery without alerting a soul to his presence there will be another 4 where he'll get stuck on the ledge, or jump off the rooftop, or refuse to go into cover and get seen. It seems a combination of lack of talent to implement consistant, responsive controls in favour of their beloved animations and the usual Ubisoft rush-to-shelves-for-holiday-season have given us a beautiful yet horribly, buggy, unoptomized, broken mess.

However, this is a shallow surface detail, and it starts to become apparent that the development team spent more time on visual upgrades and pseudocurrency integration than into actually developing a game that is fun and more importantly compelling to play. As Arno, the bilingual Frenchman with a distinct English accent, you will explore Paris for the usual trudging collectibles, hidden secrets and quests that accompany any Assassin's Creed game. There is a lot of content here. Well, you might say something different if you reclassify what content is, and perhaps make the term adhere to a more strict definition, as collecting the chests which require you to use the companion app to unlock them feels both dully reused and insultingly re-conceptualized, seems more as though the mandate of the team was "filler, filler and more filler" to split the main Assassination missions apart.

This trend of Ubisoft games is starting to feel more and more tired and uninspired the more games that it is present in. The player is let loose in an open environment with a multitude of optional objectives spread out across the game world, which if it takes your fancy, you can indulge in at any point for however long you want. It is possible to complete the majority of all of these side activities within the first couple of hours of the game, barring the restrictions of story unlocked areas and equipment required to complete them.

Whilst they are "optional" "side" activities, this method of injecting content has made up the bulk of most of the Assassin's Creed series, and now it has made it's way into Ubisoft's other IPs, with reimagining of the Far Cry series and Watch Dogs, all featuring the same system of climb/hack/climb&hack some kind of elevated structure which then in turn unlocks the area and reveals all the optional objectives and collectibles that were hidden.

Obviously the formula is popular, as so far all the series that utilise this method have been all been a success in their own right, and even when other companies take the concept and use it in their own games it appears to be a factor for success, as shown with Monolith's Shadow of Mordor, which used the same tower revealing mechanic, and even had an eerily similar jump-off-the-tall-thing animation as Assassin's Creed patented Eagle Whistle Haybale Frontflip Dive.

When it comes down to it, the gameplay of the game is nothing new. The combat system is practically identical, one of the very few differences being the way that enemies health is shown, which was absent in the previous to AC games but still their for the majority of Assassin's Creed titles.

The animations of the game, when they aren't bugging out horrifically, should be praised however, for some really fantastic mocap work that does genuinely convey a sense of realism (if you can suspend the disbelief of a man doing piroutess along the front of a church and frequently breaking the laws of physics) in the sticky-handed protagonists movements, and those of NPC's.

I didn't get to play Co-op, so I won't mention it, but it wasn't really something that interested me to begin with.

Finally, the micro-transactions are pointless, and the introduction of "Creed Points" is as hilarious as it is sad.

If you're looking for an interesting and exciting experience this isn't it, and the amount of performance issues makes it impossible to recommend.

Well at least it's better than ACIII. [Issue#257, p.66]

Newfound openness of Assassin’s Creed demonstrates just how inadequate its AI really is for a stealth game: pampered nobility usually simply ignores a bloodied body on the dance floor, and guards don’t care much either. At least they’ve learned how to fight: unless you “cheat” with smoke bombs, it’s highly unlikely you’ll survive a melee against a group. [Jan 2015, p.62]

As I write this, Assassin’s Creed: Unity is a bugfest, but technical problems, however annoying, can and probably will be fixed. It is not cracks in textures that it is the most worrying thing about Unity, but the cracks in game design and writing.
