Best lagg simulator since watch_dogs. You'll be lucky to reach 60 fps on ultra high graphics, maybe even thirty. On high without AA I'm lucky to get 15 in some places. GJ ubisoft, your lagg simulators keep improving.

Nope, couldn't keep a straight face.

With that aside (this should also tell you that I am not the biggest die hard AC fan, having taken a long hiatus), so far the game is quite enjoyable. I see that there is a lot of flak given to the optimization for PC sucking, which I fully expected, I am delighted to say that I am running 60fps 80% percent of the time. When I do get frame dips, its never below 40, so not really a big deal. For those wondering here are my specs:
i5 4670k Overclocked to 4.2ghz (I do have a master cooler CPU fan so that def helps)
    GTX 780 3GDRM
    16 gigs of RAM
Anywho, Im not super far in the game, but i wanted to write this for those skeptical about getting it.. If you like AC, you'll like this game; if you don't, or have been getting tired of the AC franchise, then dont. But regardless, the fluidity of movement and parkour is drastically better than previous iterations, and the ambitious scope of the game is astounding. Combat has been improved and is definitely more difficult than before, but still not punishing to frustration.
My biggest beef with the game right now is the accents.. why British? The voice actors CAN speak French, and i cant fathom why they dont at least speak with a french accent.. is it so hard? I know this seems nit picky, but in a world that is so beautifully realized, it really does take you out of the immersion and the France locale.
Seriously though, I FULLY expected that the optimization would suck, but Ubisofts RECOMMENDED specs are quite accurate. If you meet the specs but were skeptical, go ahead and stop it, get the game, PM me and lets get assassinating!

Vsync disabled in-game but forced vsync through D3Doverrider or Radeon Pro boosts performance significantly and screen tearing is almost non-existing. My Resolution is 1440p on specs: AMD fx8320 clocked at 4Ghz, sli 770 4gb cards w/ 8gb ram. SweetFx enabled to improve graphics dramatically.
honestly, this game rocks! Performance and optimization is not great by any means but even running in the mid 30's fps, the game is very smooth. ** I have tested this game on a single 770 card at 1080p w/ max settings and i never drop below 35 fps with sweetfx enabled** so if you have a single card of equal performance to a GTX 770 4gb, running max settings @1080p is a reality you can expect with smooth gameplay.
Playing the game will make you understand why the performance is lacking even with a beefy PC. The graphics are unparalleled and the amount of detail is incredible! Hundreds of characters on screen, life like surroundings, lighting, reflections, shadows and tessellation effects like never before seen!
Gameplay is fun with new free running moves and fighting mechanics. Story is not mind-blowing but it is engaging. The environment is so incredibly well done that you will want to explore every inch of the world you are in.
I dont understand why others are having performance issues with better specs than mine.... reports of fps in the 20s with 780ti??? Something doest add up. Play the game!! It is great!!

In my opinion it's one of the best games of 2014, unfortunately really strong PC is needed to fully enjoy it, but Assassin's Creed Unity is a good reason to upgrade your rig. There are few glitches (like TXAA which looks worse than FXAA) but it's nothing that couldn't be fixed with a patch.

This is the worst piece of trash in recent memory. I have a GTX TITAN X now and can't even get past the logos on startup. Crash Crash Crash... and there's no fix whatsoever. A $4,000 can't even run this thing. I used to have two 780ti's in SLI and couldn't even perform.

Even without all the bugs, this game is mediocre at best. The new parkour control is horrible. The character always goes directions against my will. Combat system is utter rubbish. The automatic lock system is a joke. And side missions are just boring and repetitive, and dont make any sense story-wise. . And with all the microtransactions, this game deserved to go free.

    With a 4790K & 980GTX this game is currently an 8.0/10.

When properly patched it can easily become an 8.5/10.

Gameplay is more or less the same as every other AC title, weak story but fun gameplay.

I'm not a big fan of the changes. Compared to the combat in Shadows of Mordor or some of the better Assassin Creed games this is a huge let down.

The last drop for me was accidentally clicking the DLC on the mini-map because I just wanted to fast travel to a mission. I tried to go back to Paris, but it was impossible and I wasn't prepared for the Dead Kings. After a couple of hours trying to leave the DLC I just had enough. I simply quit and uninstalled the game. Never touching an AC game again, until they get their sh.t together.

At least I still have Black Flag, which is fun unlike this piece of crap.

(oh and I forgot. Optimization is not so great either. The textures are loading slowly thus making the game sometimes look like it's from the PS2 era and occasionally it just stutters. I don't know why, because Witcher 3 runs flawlessly for me, which looks so much better. I have r9 390 and i5-4690)

The game runs smoothly for the most part on my pretty fast computer, but every now and then there's a weird slow-down where the game becomes unresponsive. Afterwards, I find Arno climbing an invisible wall with no way to get down except exiting the game. Because most of the sessions aren't very fun, I usually don't restart the game.

The layout of the map and the large number of civilians makes running around on rooftops faster than street travel again for the first time in years. Unfortunately, Ubi changed the free-running system to now require pressing an extra button for up or down. The system isn't tuned well, and while the system does allow a person to run around a corner or around an obstacle without inadvertently climbing, it is still a major step back in terms of fluidity of control.

Combat is awful - where in previous games a player could cut down a crowd like Chow Yun Fat, Arno is not a very good fighter. The visual cues for parry timing have been tweaked, and they are not as effective - especially coupled with the slow-down that often occurs in very crowded areas while fighting. Further, there seems to be no way to prevent getting shot (the last several games had a human shield maneuver). Worst of all, 90% of the trademark assassin moves (air kills, stealth kills, etc) are unavailable until purchased with one of the FOUR in-game currencies. Combat has taken a HUGE step back in this iteration of the series.

In previous games, Ubi tried to train us to accept running around a map looting chests as a substitute for gameplay. In this game, Ubi moves to step two: exploiting the now-ingrained chest hunting by making chests that can variously only be opened in co-op, using the smart-phone app, or using real-money to buy points. The map is so filled with markers for collectable objects, which as far as I can tell offer no significant benefit upon being collected, that it makes navigation a little frustrating. And the map itself is soooo huge that missions often require running a tremendous distance between objectives, just like the old days. I would've preferred to have the map broken into separate pieces with many more fast-travel options.

A phenomenal storyline woudn't be enough to save this game, but it's irrelevant. Arno is an insipid character, like a shadow of Ezio, who as an orphan doesn't even have family members to use as a vehicle for driving the story. Overall, Unity is my least favorite Assassin's Creed game ever and probably the most disappointing AAA game I've ever played. Even AC: Liberation HD, the port from a mobile platform, exceeds this game in every measurable way short of outright visual fidelity. The only good thing I have to say about Unity at this point is that Ubi gave me a free copy of FC4 for being unlucky enough to buy Unity at full price.

the plot/dialogue on the other hand leaves a lot to be desired. it's hard to find any credibility in an opener when some unknown caller with a false name tells you within a minute of talking to you that there is a centuries old conspiracy and battle between good and evil, templars and assassins, and that YOU are suddenly one of the chosen ones. yeah right, pull the other one, it's got bells on ... as believable as the one about the Nigerian president's ex-wife wanting to transfer 1259509 billion into your account, etc... but some people do fall for that so go figure ...

It’s a fun mediocre game, the story is predictable and when its good, it’s because it’s attempting to replicate what past entries from the franchise have done, but the plot, twists, and characters are all servisable.

The city of france is beautiful despite the time period in which the game takes place in, and the landmarks, the costumes, the people, the weapons, and the different attires from everyone are recreated in superb detail, it is, even to this day, a gorgeous game to look at.

The gameplay has changed here from past assassin’s creed games, for starters, you have less control over the combat, locking on is done here automatically but it’s a coin toss whether it would work or not, half of the times Arno will sheath his sword in the middle of a battle if you face some enemies behind you, on the other hand, the difficulty is all over the place, the game is trivial in the main missions in this regard, but in the secondary activities, it’s brutal, and sometimes, hilariously, it emphasizes how poorly balanced the combat can be when you get surrounded by a ridiculous amount of enemies. You can’t counter anymore, instead the finishers that you perform, that are among the best the series have ever seen here, are executed when killing an enemy, you can also do them at times if you happen to reduce the enemies health to a point where their health bar starts flashing, this allows you to perform a finishing blow of sorts by holding the attack button, although sometimes this one works and other times it doesn’t.

There’s a ton of customization here when it comesw to your weapons and equipment, you can change your attire and clothes to a multitude of different items and this is a great addition, the only complication is that there isn’t any sort of “transmog” system, and the clothing items have specific stats, the only way here to actually enable any sort of transmog is by using “outfits” which are separate from the invidiual clothing items you can equip, and a lot of the times tehir reminiscent of other AC games; still though, the customization is a welcome addition and the attires are really good.

The platforming or “parkour” system has also received an overhaul, giving you three options on how to play with it this time around, you can climb up, climb down, and free run, a lot of this isn’t explained well, for example, in the first mission of the game you’re vaulting objects by climbing down… This gets exacerbated later on and, ironically, this was the first AC where the parkour system truly gave me problems, at times Arno (the main protagonist) wouldn’t move from a ledge, other times it would just not get a hold of the nearby ledge he had right in front of him, it was a mess for a while…

Overall the game is fine, it’s serviceable and beautiful to look at, it also runs a lot better and plays a lot better than it used to with most of the bugs and optimization issues squashed, but sadly, still, some remain, and the overall aspect of the game that remains here is one of clunkiness and a lot of unfulfilled ambition, perhaps for the technical limitations of the consoles at the time, or maybe for the lack of time the team had in working for the game, but either way, the game remains a bit of a clunky game at the end of the day.

If you want to experience it be sure to get it on a sale.

The story was the weakest until now lacking any actual climax unlike the stories of Ezio. The game was basically a tail, tackle, assassinate simulation, seeming like an alpha test for the engine, not an actual AAA hyped title. However I enjoyed it. roaming through Paris was fun but not at all rewarding. I wasn't even interested in going for the side missions. The strongest part was the Graphics which looked stunning, although it was plagued by countless glitches. The Whole game was a pleasing experience, but main story was ridiculously short and overall Assassin's Creed Unity had the potential to become one of the best games of 2014. It truly was a next-gen title. Expand

With this "horrible optimization", it is killing mainly that, what is so good on other side!

Shame on you developers! And next time, don't forget to ruin the rest...

Well at least it's better than ACIII. [Issue#257, p.66]

Newfound openness of Assassin’s Creed demonstrates just how inadequate its AI really is for a stealth game: pampered nobility usually simply ignores a bloodied body on the dance floor, and guards don’t care much either. At least they’ve learned how to fight: unless you “cheat” with smoke bombs, it’s highly unlikely you’ll survive a melee against a group. [Jan 2015, p.62]

As I write this, Assassin’s Creed: Unity is a bugfest, but technical problems, however annoying, can and probably will be fixed. It is not cracks in textures that it is the most worrying thing about Unity, but the cracks in game design and writing.
