BioWare are frauds and they pulled the scam of the year. If you don't understand why I'm saying it, watch and read all the marketing related stuff from EA and tally against how many of them have been fulfilled.
Piss poor pathetic broken incomplete piece of garbage released by BioWare followed by running away while tucking their tails between their legs.

This is a joke. Im never buying EA game again. This is a boycott now. Promising so much, and lying. Just learn from Schrier article the way it was created.

Matchmaking seems to pair you up with players when you would rather play alone and fails to find any players to help you when you would like some help from a squad. The difficulty varies from stupidly easy (in main quest missions) to stupidly hard (if you begin the wrong side mission) The worst part of this difficulty discrepancy is that the enemies you are facing all look alike. I didn't get any enjoyment out of finding new loot or defeating tough enemies. The whole experience was joyless. Expand

So glad I didn't buy it, but played it with a friend first.
It looks great and all, but man, this is more a messed up demo than a real game

Anthem is a online first person looter shooter.

Graphics: Average. Exactly what one would expect in a triple A game in 2020.

    Audio: Average. See graphics.

Maps: Average. Can be repetitive at times.

User Interface: No mini map therefore difficult to maintain situational awareness. There is a compass ring but it is inadequate.

Character Creation: Poor. Very Basic. Race and Gender have no effect in game outside of appearance. Character has very little back story. Dialog choices do not seem different.

    Inventory management: Average but functional.

    Economy: There isn't one.

    Social: Poor, no world chat

Weapons: Very Good. Lots of different types of weapons but some seemed designed for a very special set of narrow circumstances. Aim point on weapon's sights are difficult to see.

    Crafting: Very basic.

Tactics: Run, and gun, rinse repeat.

Enemy Tactics: Poor and simplistic. Endless waves of the same enemy (which can appear from anywhere) who have no regard for there own lives.

Coop/Matchmaking: Easy to find a group, but social aspects are minimal.

Writing/Voice Acting: Falls above Destiny 2 but below Star War The Old Republic. Voice acting is good. Writing is average.

Technical Issues: None that I could see.

Game play: Gun play is fun. I got flying down but swimming I could never get the hang of. Game needs an up and down keybinding.

Reputations system: Not a revolutionary system but it works.

Bottom line: Game is fun and the loot system is OK until you get to the end game. At that point it seems rather pointless. Game needs some serious work, will reevaluate upon the release of version 2.0. Evaluated version was 1.7

This game is in its second year of release and they STILL haven't fixed something as essential as using Raw mouse input so if you move the mouse slowly the input doesn't get registered in-game.

Reminds you every second that you can be bothered to play that it's a bad console port.

Worst optimization ever. It's just a scam on PC. Stuttering with low graphics settings in I7 7800x, 32GB ram, 2070, SSD 4GB/s. So have in mind, that you have only 24 hours to refund the game if you want to give it a try.

In 2019 the game had a rough launch. You can educate yourself and learn about the hell the developers were forced to go through making this game, blame EA, if anybody. It had a lot of bugs and the developers were forced to rush a launch after months of crunch hours. It's not that they didn't care, they were burnt out against their will. Many had to take months of leave due to mental health issues.

Throughout 2019 many issues were addressed, but to many gamers, it was too late. Many Mass Effect fanboys were also butthurt that the development of this game "ruined" Andromeda. Gamers are some of the most entitled, spoiled people you will meet. Some even harass and make death threats towards developers over a video game(which are basically modern toys) not being to their liking. Absolutely pathetic.

2020 saw more bug fixes, QOL improvements, and a promise of a rework that wasn't necessary. Unfortunately, COVID-19 happened making game dev's jobs even harder and by 2021 EA saw the rework as too much of an investment.

As of right now, this game is a lot of fun. Most of the content planned for the game wasn't launched. A rework wasn't necessary, it just needed more content. There were a total of 9 strongholds planned and at least 3 cataclysms. Had these been released, the game would be significantly better. The player base isn't very large but there are a decent number of dedicated fans still playing and new players constantly checking it out thanks to being part of EA Play.

Bioware could easily breathe life into this game without a full rework. They would need to just launch the planned content. Add the additional strongholds and cataclysms. Add a few more story missions for the 3 factions. Add a few more varieties of scenarios for world events and contracts. A few more weapons(especially melee) would be appreciated and an increase in the level cap to 40 would also be welcomed(and maybe a GM4 difficulty to go with the power increase). It's not something they can fix overnight, but it doesn't require a full redesign of the game.

I'm not a veteran Anthem player, I've only got almost 200 hours invested, but I haven't completely given up hope on this game or IP. The gameplay is a lot of fun and the lore(if you dive deeper into it in game) is actually pretty interesting. Maybe as more people try it out, more people will realize that it's actually a fun game and EA/Bioware will see there is still something to salvage and money to be made(because we all know that's all they care about). If they roll out some more content, more people will come back.

If you haven't played it yet, don't be a sheep. Play it yourself and be the judge. Don't let other people do the thinking for you. If I hadn't tried it myself I would have missed out on what quickly became one of my favorite modern games.

Now that I have a mighty Gigabyte RTX 3080 Ti Gaming OC, I loaded Anthem.

The game is beautiful (in most areas) especially the beginning waterfall and flying a javelin over it is a dream. Love the roaring burning sound of the javelin too.

The sad thing is the game stutters a lot, mostly its 60fps but in some areas it dips under 35fps. So I turned HBAO normal and Lightning High but still getting under 45fps in those areas. All else is maximum and DLSS is turned off. DLSS is too sharp and some effects go missing when turned on.

I am surprised for a game that uses only about 6GB or Vram for its Ultra textrures would dip under 35fps.

And only Vsync ON with Scanline sync -140 gives a smooth framerate on my TV. All else fails... I have tried everything I found on reddit. EVERYTHING.

This game engine really sucks. But so far I am having fun playing it as long as it does not dip under 45fps.

The Central Hub is dead and lifeless, character models are standing around seeming to chat but you hear dead silence. DLC isn't going to fix these issues. i give 1 point for the mobility aspect being fun but even that feels awkward when transitioning from flying to shooting etc it breaks the fast-paced feel you get when flying through combat or retreating.

This is essentially a pay to play free to play game, kinda like pubg. i found scant customization off the bat (which was promised recolors at least but NO) Warframe does all the same stuff anthem does BUT ITS FREE. This is another over managed cash grab pet project driven by EAs execs and unfortunately IS NOT EAs point of redemption at all. I am starting to think the execs are preparing for bankruptcy and have no care in the world about the state of the company or its new products because they're gonna get theirs!

The gameplay loop is not for everyone much in the same way Diablo, Destiny, Warframe, Division, etc. has gameplay that isn’t for everyone. I personally enjoy the combat mechanics and don’t find it boring despite being repetitive. The story isn’t Oscar worthy, but the list of games that have that kind of story are very few and far between anyway. The story is decent, but I will say that I’m really liking the world that this game takes place in. It’s very interesting to me. In the end, before you give this game a straight 0 because it’s EA and some Youtuber said it’s bad, give it a shot and be objective. I thought I’d hate this game. I ended up loving it. Once again there are so many people who were ready to jump onto BioWare's next game and rip it to shreds without actually having played it, or knowing much about it.

I will start by saying yes there are issues like bugs, and for many people there are annoying loading times, especially those still using old computers, but BioWare already issued a day 1 patch that began to address many of these issues, and appear to be moving very quickly in response to criticism about the state of the game and any gamer knows these kinds of things are always present at the launch of new games, and are, in most cases, addressed pretty fast so my review will mostly be about the gameplay, story, and core game itself.

First I will start with where Anthem shines,

Combat: The combat is my favorite part of Anthem, it's fast paced, action combat that works fluidly with the flight mechanics, performing combos, dodging things flying at you in the air (or ground and leaping up like Ironman) is extremely fun and well designed. When I first tested the game i was nervous about these mechanics because they were a fair bit more awkward than they are now.

Flight: This is what I was most nervous about with Anthem because when I tested the game earlier on I found the flight mechanics to be nothing short of a nightmare as they were clunky, awkward, and I was literally running into mountains and trees over and over. However, BioWare did an excellent job addressing the flight mechanics between then and launch, as I do not have that problem any longer and flying around the game has been a great deal of fun, again it works fluidly with combat, and has become a much more natural feeling mechanic.

Story: The story is surprisingly good, I won't get too deep into this because I don't want to spoil anything, but I was not hyped for this game (as I really love story driven games, like other BioWare games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect, but also other narrative driven games like the Witcher series, etc) and I did not expect the story for this game to be as good as it turned out to be, in fact if you are a fan of story driven games I think Anthem is worth buying for that alone.

Graphics: Stunning. Literally nothing else to say about them, this game is gorgeous.

Fort Tarsis: This is your personal city in the game, and it changes as you progress through the game, I find the potential in this to be exciting as I love games where the world changes based on what I do in the game.

Customization: This is extremely important to me in online games, and they do not disappoint in Anthem. Customization for your suit is extremely extensive, you can choose literally every piece (torso, hands, legs, helmet, etc) and they provide an extensive dye system where you can even create your own custom colors, as well as different designs (they call them vinyl's) that you can stick onto your suit, you can choose the type of materials you want your suit to be made from (plastic, leather, metal, cloth, with varying texture options as well as wear and tear, etc) I could go on, but it's a lot and I think you would have a great deal of fun with this.

Shop: The cosmetics shop where you can buy emotes, skins, etc is really well done as there are literally NO pay to win options, and you can get everything in the shop for currency you earn in game, and that currency is not hard or grindy to come by so you don't need to spend any money here unless you don't feel like doing missions to get something you really want from there, if you don't have enough coin.

The negative aspects of the game (not including bugs as I said before, because virtually every new game has them) are things like the UI.

User Interface: The UI/User Experience for this game is a bit better than it was during testing, but still pretty bad. This is one of those issues that I hope gets addressed more extensively ASAP. It's not so bad that it doesn't function properly, but it's not very intuitive, there's not even a real proper character sheet unless you go to the Forge to alter/upgrade your suits, and the expedition/mission menu is awkward and clunky. This is my biggest complaint because it is honestly annoying at times, especially when you've spent the last 20 minutes having conversations with all the characters in Fort Tarsis and you want to just jump back into doing missions and playing the game. Having to run back to the forge to be sure you're ready can be kind of annoying.

There are other things I may revisit this review for later but I have to stop procrastinating and get ready for work now. Overall, the game is very fun, well designed, and the things that aren't can and should be addressed so I'm not overly worried about them. I give the game an 8/10 because I genuinely have been enjoying it far much more than I thought I would (I was not hyped for this game much at all) and I have been pleasantly surprised with how good the game turned out to actually be.

Teleports players if someone flies ahead during story missions (this isn't a problem in freeplay, and most likely exists so party members do not miss curcial plot points).

Conclusion: Don't believe the hate behind this game, but it is best played with a group of friends who won't mind taking breaks to immerse themselves in the story between missions.

My thoughts in bullet points after about 15 hours:

Visually impressive. However: PC performance is sub-par. Outrageously excessive loading screens. Badly designed UIs and menus. Large number of bugs, crashes and similar issues. Good core gameplay -- most abilities feel good, combos are satisfying, flying is fun. However: Gameplay hub is terrible to navigate. Gunplay feels bland.

Good core gameplay -- most abilities feel good, combos are satisfying, flying is fun. However: Gameplay hub is terrible to navigate. Gunplay feels bland. Extremely repetitive mission design. Very little gameplay objective and enemy variety. Very little weapon and gear variety. Little meaningful character progression. Gear is badly balanced and often bugged. Almost no suit customization outside of the dye system.

Soundtrack is great, world is interesting. However: Story is beyond generic, the villain gets three minutes of screentime and does generic bad guy things. Barely any interesting characters. Dialogue is a slog, often feels unnatural and over-acted. Dialogue choices are meaningless.

I can't think of much good to say. Besides visuals and flying, it really does not excel at anything, I feel. On the other side, the list of issues is long. It feels unfinished and heartless. At the time, I have no interesting in playing any further than halfway through the story -- at this point I've long seen all the enemies, all the gameplay objectives, used all weapons and gear and seen the entire map. Everything beyond that is pure repetition and chasing higher numbers. Which, ironically, you can't effectively play around, since there is no stats page.

    Disappointing.

The game is not perfect, it suffers from some problems and the developers are doing everything possible to eliminate the flaws. However, the game looks great, is easy and pleasant to play, gives a lot of impressions and emotions. It has a positive atmosphere in spite of the dark events of the story. The most talked about issue is EA's games as a service model, which is a disgrace. The shady launch times do also not help when the game isn't even up to a standard other companies would consider releasing it at. This games as a service and lack of quality is linked and will be seen in the way that despite launching poorly, EA will draw you back to the game after you're done with it by advertising new content that should've been in the base game, which, is extremely short. In addition to the problems with the lack of content, much of it in the game is locked behind microtransactions.

Finally, as mentioned before, the quality in general is insufficient, which extends beyond the bugs. The areas in the game feel as if they were designed for more and long to have something more than a bulletsoaker or 2 for every 5 minutes youve flown around (alright the flying is pretty cool). In addition the team at Bioware clearly haven't put much effort into animation which can be seen in the way that the movements loop and often don't make a lot of sense (mostly talking about NPCs here).

In conclusion, Anthem is a great idea, but has been executed terribly.

Sure targeting an enemy's weak points does deal more damage but you can just use Javelin abilities alone and do even more damage. your gun is almost pointless as it is used just as a filler for your abilities.
The story without spoilers wants you to care about people who you never meet and who sound so similar in that you find yourself asking if the game was voiced by just two people. seriously there is almost no distinction. This is for the first part of the game but not the game as a whole. although the rest of the game barely breaks away from this mold. Stories generally build characters from back story to understand why and this game doesn't have even have that in the slightest. Everyone you meet feels like a token character and you wanting to skip dialog after 4 hours of play as it is the most lazy writing ever. The story is generic bad army with no purpose other then to be bad does bad things. seriously the story starts off with that. no, hey these bad people want to accomplish XYZ, instead you have hey they are doing bad things, better stop them. This game is devoid of a greater purpose in story. For bioware last year claiming our choices would have repercussions and then in game for it to mean nothing feels like we have been lied to as a community. Also the article was posted last year in June.
The game is pretty, when the game works, and looks great but that is it. That is basically the single thing bioware did right here. They made the game look good. The environment looks great, customizing the look of your Javelin is one of the best i have seen so far for games. The hub city was one thing they really didn't get right though.
There are other unfortunately bad parts of this game. loading to just configure your Javelin seems rather silly as other games in this genre have had this nailed down. If there was nothing else to compare this too it would be a none issue but seeing as how other publishers can do this in games even 6 years old without a separate loading screen it is a big fail.
Even is joking around way to much in what is suppose to be a hard time to live in. Seriously it really breaks the experience. Imagine playing a horror game but everyone was telling jokes and always smiling. that is this game with their character and writings.
If you go to quick play, you can get into the last story mission of the game as a level 3. Yep, plenty of other sources to back this up. That is a very big flaw to have if you care about story.
Needless to say, I want this game to be great but it misses so many marks that the core of it needs a major rework in order to fix it. One of my friends put it best. They spent years making a ten dollar game for the wal-mart bargain bin.

Things were fine for me initially but then I started having frequent network errors and mission issues (e.g. get taken to the main menu after a mission instead of seeing the results, getting placed in missions that don't end, getting placed in missions where the main trigger never occurs, try to start a mission only to end up at the main menu again) and a few hard crashes. Also, the game was so much better while the story-line played out. Now that I've completed it, the game play is pretty repetitive and hearing the same comments over and over gets old. Making it worse, frequently have to try a mission a few times before it actually works properly which makes the loading times more annoying. Potential is there but needs more content and it is currently extremely buggy.

I really enjoyed Destiny and Warframe but was skeptical of Anthem due to the reviews. Decided to purchase it anyway since I thought the demo was okay. I really like it so not sure where all the hate is coming from. Great graphics and sound and gameplay has been a lot of fun. Took me a bit to get use to flying but really enjoying the flying aspect also. Hovering above the battlefield and bringing down elemental attacks is a lot of fun. I started out trying to solo most missions but like Destiny, found there was a greater chance of success if I joined others. Solo'ing can be overwhelming at my current level. Exploring has also been really enjoyable so glad they have a freeplay mode. I've taken hundreds of screenshots already.

The narrative is a botched attempt at a traditional Bioware story, shoved inside a looter shooter. It fails dramatically pretty much immediately after the first cutscene. It's not that the voice acting is bad - because it really isn't - but the presentation of it means you don't care what is happening, ever.

This isn't helped by banal environments, which consists of forest ruin after forest ruin, non-stop, over and over again, interrupted by massive loading times. The game looks beautiful, but is boring to look at after an hour or so - that seems like a contradiction, but there's only so long you can look at the same pretty picture before you want to look at something different. Anthem provides no visual diversity.

As everyone suspected before launch, this is Destiny Lite. The core combat is the familiar bullet-sponge looter shooter the market is now flooded with, but Anthem is a terrible example of it because, again, the gameplay loop lacks diversity. You do the same thing, over and over again, and when the flight mechanics stop being fun, the whole game stops being fun.

I know people will say there's 'potential' here, but honestly this is a full price, AAA game that should be a lot better than this on release. We shouldn't be paying to be glorified Beta testers for DLC down the line.

Ultimately, Anthem feels like the game Bioware had to make rather than the one they wanted to make. The lack of soul in this title is resoundingly obvious.

You could've at least tried to make enemy feel like real threat at higher difficulties instead of just making them more of a bullet sponges that are anything but fun. The flight portion is actually pretty fun at times. I can only imagine how cool the flight would be in first person but ultimately it's the only good part of the game. The bottom line is both Destiny and Borderlands do the loot shooter way better. I guess if you were diehard destiny fan who's burned out and looking for poor destiny wannabe I would maybe recommend this to them. Frankly, I have to wonder if some of the bad reviews are agenda-driven. As one other review stated, there are plenty of negative reviews that do not specify exactly what is "bad" about the game. Also...I have a feeling that some reviewers do not play long enough to really get a sense of how the game works.

PC looks a bit better and IMO plays a bit better, but the PS4 version looks pretty damn good as well. Faces of people look nice, the motion capture looks quite realistic but there are some issues with eyes, nowhere near the last Mass Effect but still not 100% right.

Sound: The sound is fantastic, lightning bolts sound incredible especially if you have a nice surround sound system. There are some issues with music though, on PS4 I noticed there was music in town and it fit quite well, but weirdly on PC I have no music in town, so the town ends up feeling really strange and empty. Another area that seems strange to me is the after mission summary, something about the sound there just doesn't seem right and needs some work. Outside of that the rest of the music and sound is great, same goes with the voice acting, voices are done well by a competent team.

Gameplay: This is the area where the game shines, flying around in your javelin is incredible. There are times where the gameplay is so damn good you are stunned no one else thought of this system before. You will fly to a mission, drop in with an air attack, you slam into an enemy on the ground, whip out your gun and start mowing down enemies all around you. As they turn back to open fire on you, your shield becomes nearly exhausted, you take off and fly to a position where you are relatively safe to catch your breath. All while dropping bombs, elemental attacks, super abilities and heavenly judgement upon your enemies in glorious fashion. It is damn good! The flying is the best I have seen in any game I have ever played in my 30+ years of gaming. This is truly where the game shines and what makes you keep going back for more!!

Game Quality: The game has some bugs left within it, while most of the bugs have been ironed out, a few still remain. This isn't a Bethesda game, aka a buggy mess, but it does need a little bit of work here and there fixing everything, no more then most well vetted out releases though. I experienced 1 loading freeze while in a mission out of the dozens of missions I have thus far completed. Since the last two patches, the bugs are down to next to never happening and that was done just in time for launch.

Story: The story I have seen thus far is actually good, I am about 30 hours into the game and what I have seen has intrigued me making me want to play more. The stories you do as side quests are also interesting, they are right in line with you being a free lancer. You are hired to go do odd jobs to help people, find this or that, in a dangerous world. As the story ramps up with the plot twists, I think it has been done quite well, although the story could have kicked in a bit earlier to hook people into the game.

Missions: Here is where I think the game needs some polish and why I would rate the game a 7.0. While I enjoy playing missions, they are kind of like destiny, short and a bit repetitive. There is a mission fairly early in the game where you have to open these tombs, this quest is really out of place and should be redone IMO. You are playing missions, get quest, go out, kill stuff, mission over and suddenly suddenly your next mission requires you to go into free play. You find one of the tombs you need to find, you go to open it and you are not worthy.. becuse you didn't complete a list of random tasks you were never told about. i.e. kill x enemies with head shots, kill x enemies with fist punch, complete x world missions, etc. You essentially hit a wall and need to go grind in a game that grinding previously was not needed. Once you complete this mission, it is back to the regular game/story with no grind needed.. its weird. That quest-line should really be tweaked, I don't see any issues with challenging people to do stuff like that, but that seems more like a weekly quest vs. a quest that is necessary to continue on with the game. Like destiny, you are going to be running out, doing a mission that will take you less than 10 minutes coming back to down, repeating that process. I wish Bioware had put a lot more time into the quests to make them unique instead of a lot of rinse and repeat style quests.

Bottom Line: The game is good, if they continue adding content/stuff to do this will easily stand the test of time. I would recommend it, even at the $60 price tag.

Censorship on Metacritic once again, but here i am, re-posting the same comment.
This is what happens when you release a half-baked game with no content and anything fun to do.
Insane loading times, repetitive missions, boring cities.
Downgraded graphics and very mediocre gameplay makes up for an unforgettable mediocre experience.

The reviews are far too harsh, it’s fun but a little rough around the edges I can see it getting better better over time just like destiny. People love to hate stuff and I think they’re being unfair to this game. It needed a bit more time to cook in all honesty but I think given time and support it could be great.

Excellent game with a lot of potential. The combat is fun, the graphics are some of the best I've ever seen, and the narrative is remarkably well done for a looter shooter.

However there are still quite a few bugs and some UI clunk that can be ironed out.

I'll give Anthem an 8 for its potential.

This review is based off how much do I look forward to playing and how much fun do I have when I play. If you are having fun - what else matters more? These games are entertainment.

I look forward to getting into a javelin each day. It is such a great experience in the freedom to fly in a well-armed Iron Man suit. The combat is fluid and enjoy my engagements. You can be easily overwhelmed if you are not always looking out for your flanks. This makes all combat challenging aka fun.

    The big points:
    * The scenery is beautiful. Sometimes I walk rather than fly to get more exposed to it. Witcher 3 upped a further notch.

    * The combat is usually a good time. Last night I was in my storm suit and fought another storm. I was equipped for a ice/lightning combo and had a hard time as I could not get the lightning (strikes ground) to strike the enemy storm. The trick is matching up the ground targeting with air positioning of the enemy storm. This can be easily fixed with a ground to sky target or maybe I just need to spend more time in the suit...

    * Strongholds are immersive and have solid loot. They have width and depth and very good design. Can take some getting used to but it sure does add and a nice dynamic. Definitely challenging. As usual, a squad with prior experience makes it easier but not simple.

    * The voice acting is top notch. No, there is no PC crap in it. I cannot stand that. No dialogue seems dumb or forced.

    * The campaign mission/story was well laid out. I looked forward to each step and not just because I wanted to power through it. It all made sense. I love the Freelancer history. They were dealt a very bad hand.

    * Random missions/events are nice surprises. I like flying/walking around and having events just pop up that you can deal with or even join others already there.

The only boredom in this game is the kind you make.

That said I do look forward to more content. I thought that was supposed to be day one. Didn't see any, so I took a point off for that.

    * There a handful of bugs that do need to be cleaned up asap that interrupt a mission, cut out audio, hard crash or a chest you cannot open. I took off a point for that.

    Answer to gripes:
-If you die, you can't respawn, and you have wait until someone reviews you.
When you are in a stronghold true (like in other dungeon games). Otherwise you can respawn/rez with no penalty.

    -lack of diversity of surroundings.
We are in the initial area. More climates are coming is my understanding.

-Awful fast endgame and poor difficulty changes
One live stronghold is hardly all the "endgame." I are already said how immersive and challenging they are. And BTW - you can lower/raise the difficulty.

    -Poor loot system.
There was a bug that was giving too much Masterpiece loot. That's been corrected. Now there is "poor" loot. Each time I go through a stronghold I gained better gear. Were they Masterpiece's? Nope. but my loot got better so my toons got stronger.

The loading times, as most actual reviewers stated are pretty bad. They've gotten a little better with the day 1 patch, but they're still pretty bad. To me that isn't a huge issue as I have no problem alt+tabbing and reading something for a minute or responding to a message I may have received. The loot can be pretty boring until you hit max level and start getting masterworks. I've seen a lot of people complain about how repetitive it is, and it is a bit repetitive but there is no looter shooter out there that isn't (I.E Warframe, Destiny, Borderlands all suffer from this).

I've been playing the game since early access started and I must be playing a different game or all of a sudden I'm the luckiest person alive because I've experienced two bugs in over 30 hours of gameplay. The audio bug that cuts out randomly which I believe has been fixed and then the bug that shows you have your ult when you don't. That's it. So I'm not sure what people are doing or trying to do that causes their game to be a buggy mess.

Touching on micro transactions as I've seen that talked about a few times. Games are more expensive than ever to produce and game prices haven't gone up in years. People don't want to pay for DLC but they want content to keep being created for a game. I'm not really sure what people expect the devs to do to keep pulling money in to make making new content profitable. It's a company, they have to be making money. Not to mention all the MtXs can be bought with in game currency that you get at a fairly good rate.

Could the game be better, yeah. 100% could have been done better, they could have taken some fixes that Destiny made in the long run and put them in at the start. There are basic QoL updates that need to be done (which they've already stated are being worked on). It needs more end game content, but that's where the games as a service comes in. Those will be free updates in the future. But that's why the game doesn't get a 9 or a 10 from me. It's fun, but it could be better. I can't help but shake the feeling that, at least for some users, it's just automatically bad because it's an EA game and they have a HUGE recency bias towards EA.

The devs have shown they're listening to user feedback and have talked about content that will be coming in the future as well as the QoL updates the games need. Honestly if you have EA Access it's worth playing, it really is fun in my opinion and I think that most of the hate is unwarranted. If you don't have EA Access I would wait until the first larger content update comes out some time in March and then see how people are feeling about the game as one major concern I have is end game content. Though they've stated they have plans for a few years of content for the game.

Like I said at the start, the most important thing about the game is that it is fun. It's fun to fly around as Iron Man with friends and shoot aliens and bandits. If the game is checking 2 of the 3 boxes of (Gameplay, Graphics, Story) then I'm on board. The game is gorgeous, the gunplay and gameplay in general is fun and the story is just alright.

The only reason i give this game a 1 is because it looks good! otherwise what is the point to spend 30 hours to reach the "end game" which features absolutely nothing! typical of EA to put out another garbage game. starting to see a trend here, EA just breeds trash.

An absolutely shallow mess that somehow left the studio. I got it through Premier, so those 15€ hurt a little less, especially because I got to play Darksiders 3, but I can't imagine the disappointment of someone who got it for 60€ or more. From being disconnected every minute while in the hub, being disconnected at the reward screen and losing all the loot, being disconnected in the hub without even making it to the Javelin after Day 1 patch, to not being able to launch the game AT ALL after the second patch. Origin counter says I've played the game for 20 hours, at least 10 of those were looking at loading screens, the gameplay itself is as basic as it gets and you've seen everything after you finish the first mission. The mission variety doesn't exist, the same as the enemy variety. Combat consists of shooting your gun while waiting for cooldowns. The movement itself feels nice and fluid, but after witnessing all of the garbled mess the game is, the only thing moving were my bowels.
The most common in favor arguments seems to be that we should wait for updates and give it a chance; I'm on a subscription here, I already paid 15€ to not be able to play it, and from what I've heard they're planning to release new content IN ACTS, meaning you're withholding new content from a game THAT HAS NONE already in order to artificially prolong the subscription module. People are also comparing this to Warframe, and if we hammered down on Warframe at it's initial state it would never have gotten where it is. I've played Warframe from closed beta, besides it was FREE the whole time, and I can confidently say that Warframe had more to do in its 4th month of development, compared to this apparently being in development for 6+ years.
All in all, I think people would give this game less sh*t if they just pulled it off the market and came back in a year with everything in it included that was supposed to be there in the first place.

I don't understand how this game is even being compared to Fallout 76, the number of quality differences is astounding. This game runs well, looks great, sounds great, has great gunplay, enemies don't just run at you or get stuck behind cars, you can very easily swap between character builds, exploration is rewarded with loot, gear upgrades are regular (at least so far, I'm 30hrs in), etc. It's an online game, so of course it's going to need an internet connection. It's not some single player game that they're artificially imposing an always on connection to. Granted, there is an annoying bug where I'll lose my audio, but this is something that can be fixed, unlike the fundamentally flawed creation engine that tarnished Fallout 76's opportunity.
DLC is free/non an additional purchase, and there are no gameplay affecting micro transactions (cosmetic only). As someone who's game library is over 400 games, it's been a while since I've had this much fun this easily playing a game, and I quite honestly believe the people trashing on it don't know what they're talking about and lack a point of reference for what a bad game truly is.

I just cannot understand why this game is getting so much hate other than the fact that EA is involved. Just browsing through some of these reviews reveals the complete garbage people make up, for what reason? Sadly this has been happening more and more recently across a variety of other very decent games.

The load screens are fine after the day one patch, which will probably improve even more in the coming days. All the reviews are basically from the early access period or from the 10hr trial during early access and yes, during that period, load times were long and the tethering was very harsh (Which has also been improved). I am currently around 50hrs into the game and nothing has seemed stale, there also hasn't been a lack of content and the story is pretty good for a looter shooter.

    On to the good stuff!
    -DLC IS FREE!
-The cash shop doesn't sell any advantageous items and all items can be bought for a fair amount of ingame currency.
-The graphics are amazing! (Whoever says they are terrible are just downright igorant or has technological expectations that exceed the human race' capabilites.)
-The world is extremely detailed from the very depths of the dark waters to the top of the soaring cliffs!
-Gunplay and combat is some of the best in the industry.
-The movement and controls are amazing, transitioning from sky to ground, to water is almost seamless with a great sense of weight to your Javelin.
-Sound design really immerses you into the world with all sorts of critters and wind effects and the satisfying hiss of flying through the spray of a waterfall to cool down your jets.
-The overall story is solid, followed with tons of dialogue from characters scattered around Fort Tarsis.
-The game is challenging! Constantly forces you to be mobile and work together with fellow freelancers. (People who think they can John Wick through content alone will be sorely mistaken.)
-The campaign can be played SOLO and yes freeplay forces you into a session with 3 other Freelancers but you are not forced to follow them around. You can explore at your own pace.

    On to the bad stuff!

-Currently you can't select to replay story missions, which I assume will change soon. (Unless you jump into a quickplay match to help out other Freelancers through their story.)
-Character creation is a bit pointless as you very rarely get to see your avatar, unless they have plans on this design choice at a later date.
-Hope to see a TRUE social hub/hubs and more focus on social interaction.
-UI is still a bit clunky, but has already been improved upon and can yet be improved more.
-Servers are still a bit volatile.

Overall Anthem is a great game that is underserved of all the hate and I hope to see you all soon in the skies of Bastion!

While Anthem is definitely not a finished product, the game has one of the best core Gameplay Loops
from a looter shooter and is probably going to grow to be my favorite in the category. If Bioware gets the chance to fix the bugs the game has launched with, this game will be the best looter shooter.

This is really embarrassing for BioWare. Such an excuse for a story. Characters with no personality. Only three mission types (stand in circle, find orbs and put thing into other thing). Loot is boring and stats are not working. Long loading times and crashes/disconnects. No end game at all, just replay the stuff you did already.

Good but unfinished game. If the developer wants to rectify the situation - you will have to try hard. I hope the team will survive and adequately continue the project, without looking at criticism. While the game deserves a score of 6 points - and this is objective, it is not so bad that it would put a minus, but I am not a critic, and I will give 8 points only for the history andGood but unfinished game. There is literally three types of objectives used over and over again, regardless of whether it is a stronghold, quickplay, freeplay or contract. Its the same thing over and over again.

Enemy AI is terrible and just bullet sponge aimbots.

The good things are its a pretty game, but it is like putting lipstick on a pig. The core of the game is missing so many things that looter shooters require.

Anthem is a game that didn't learn anything from its predecessors. In fact it has made even sillier mistakes that games years ago have made.

Anthem has everything wrong with it that modern gaming, games as a service and looter shooters could possibly have wrong with it. unfinished and buggy, not fit for release yet. full price is supposed to be for full games that work at launch. the game overall is boring, gunplay sucks, copies all of the bad looter shooters, the map all looks the same, loading screens up the rear, repetitive,Anthem has everything wrong with it that modern gaming, games as a service and looter shooters could possibly have wrong with it. unfinished and buggy, not fit for release yet. full price is supposed to be for full games that work at launch. the game overall is boring, gunplay sucks, copies all of the bad looter shooters, the map all looks the same, loading screens up the rear, repetitive, snore level story, loot sucks, monetization sucks. 6 years to create a thoroughly bland and shallow experience is almost as comical as the people inflating their scores because they have been drinking the coolaid.
This is the equivalent of a Michael Bay Transformers movie. Lots of pretty, over exaggerated visuals and explosions, but ultimately an empty story building effort that a first year drama student could come up with.

The gunplay is pretty awful and unvaried and the combat gets pretty dull after a couple of hours as you face the same 6-7 enemies from beginning to end of the game.
Being forced to use Frostbite also seems to have hurt the development as the loading screens are atrocious even post "Day 1 patch", not so much in terms of length but how many screens are required to navigate the game.
The UI is diabolical which is highlighted if you were one of the lucky people to have to use this so often during the grind they removed in the story quest to artificially inflate its length.
Which is about 4hrs long in reality.

The player HUB is one of the most lifeless places i've seen in any "MMO" and slowly walking around to clean up the dialogue options and speak to bland lifeless characters with generic dull dialogue was an absolute chore.

Bioware have fallen a long way from the story telling masters they were in the past and the writing will likely be on the wall after this 2nd successive utter failure.

I don't know if this game is able to be saved, it will take an expansion pretty much the same length as what is here already to make this a worthwhile product and some design choices would have to be re-visited to make this a more user friendly experience.

Avoid this dumpster fire for now and maybe check it out in 6 months time if they managed to graft some more flesh on to these bones.

After a while, suspicion sets in: perhaps EA doesn’t believe in BioWare anymore, and had them release not only unpolished, but basically unfinished product to cut losses and avoid another total rework. [Issue#237, p.44]

If you want to see Anthem’s lush jungle and glistening Javelins, do it right away — this game is losing audience fast, and there’s almost nothing to do after the campaign ends. Or check it out on YouTube to save yourself some nerves and money.

It's obvious that Anthem didn't have enough development time, but had some great potential. It's a real shame, that everything turned out this way. Even now, the game can bring out positive emotions. Hasty climbers have sudden falls. No matter how ironic this proverb may seem, it's incredibly relevant for Anthem.
