Nobody is calling software developers and publishers out for the blatant fraud they are guilty of and nowhere is this more evident than in EA/Bioware's "Anthem". NONE of that actual footage is found in the released game. EA/Bioware had demonstrated a clear example of defrauding the public, yet nobody seems to have the courage to call it that. Why? Why is it that the software entertainment industry is allowed to defraud the public. If this kind of behavior was perpetrated in the BUSINESS software industry, EA/Bioware would be sued out of existence for deceptive marketing and outright fraud. Anthem gets a GIANT ZERO from this game critic, and for the record, I've been playing video games since the release of "Pong" in July of 1975. Expand

I refuse to believe that this grindy micro-transaction Destiny clone was actually made by the developers who created Mass Effect. I'll call it now - Anthem will be Free-to-Play before the end of the year. People won't pay for this lackluster game, the developers will have to pray that they sell enough loot boxes.

Also, I had a ton of bugs in the "demo"/beta weekends, but most have been resolved.

Overall, I think this is a very fun game with limited content and story at the moment.

If you play this game for the first 4 or 5 hours then you might easily be mistaken into being impressed. Visually there is much that is quite stunning, at least superficially, but beyond the smoke and mirrors what finally unveils itself to the player is a shallow, vapid and extraordinarily tedious experience. Customization is weak and limited, weapons are generic and gunplay is functional at best and lacks the power-fantasy feeling that other looter games provide. Then there are the loading screens, bad UI with menus and menus and loading between even basic features as swapping equipment. The central hub is lifeless and tedious to navigate and not a patch on what was shown in earlier gameplay footage and has been severely downgraded.

Missions are generic and have little variance. The story is, quite frankly, laughable and despite what Casey Hudson said about players able to make choices in the game none of them matter. All dialogue options are bland and have zero consequence on the outcome. The loot is actually terrible and does not create any sense of excitement or generate any enthusiasm to continue the pursuit of new gear in the way that looter-shooters must achieve. After 70 hours or so you may easily find that you do NOT even have enough credits or pieces to craft a single masterwork and the desire to continue pounding away on the extremely limited endgame content dissipates as a result.

The game is not finished. There can be no argument otherwise and the fact of the matter is that this has become a practice from publishers that simply cannot be allowed to continue. Releasing bare bones shells of games with a 'roadmap' and a promise to fix it eventually is simply unacceptable. Let us not forget that you are paying FULL price for almost nothing at all...it is not as though they release a quarter of a game and ask you for a quarter of the money. Currently the game deserves no more than a 3/10. It is functional for the most part and parts of it do look very nice but there's nothing there to keep you interested and even if content is added at a later date this game will struggle to recover from it's empty, soulless start.

The campaign's ending was a huge killer to the narrative and is such a letdown. Everything about its gameplay is BORING and utterly repetitive. Once you get past the "honeymoon stage", you realise that the game is just made up of NOTHING.

At the town, known as "Fort Tarsis", I ended up just trying to quickly escape that horrid place as it is lifeless, soulless, and its just something you want to avoid.

Loading times are intolerable and dreadful, and almost every area you visit, there's a load screen.

I gave Bioware so much promise, and I had so much anticipation. It saddens me that my children will never be able to experience the games of yesteryear that gave my generation so much joy.

KOTOR, Mass Effect, Jade Empire, Dragon Age and Neverwinter Nights. I know this is EA's Bioware but that name isn't usually slapped on Triple A schlock like this. And that's exactly what it is. Triple A schlock. It's not the worst game ever. It's not great. It's meh... but the execution is what really makes me disappointed. BioWare can't do a Destiny style co-op game. You can't have high paced online action and story. You just have 4 people sitting around bored listening to dialog saying "come on already" the two styles clash so poorly together I'm surprised the game strongly recommends NEVER doing solo missions. Maybe the story might come across better if people weren't speed running missions and emoting in front of "important" critical story moments. But I doubt it.

And this game commits the biggest sin of "BECAUSE BIOWARE" I've ever seen. ME: Andromeda had some issues in this regard but that game fits what BioWare is about. We have dialog options that literally serve NO purpose. They have absolutely no effect on characters, missions don't change based off them... you don't even get a different reaction based on what you say. I tested it when my progress was reset during the trial. I picked all the different "dialog options" and the characters said the same thing with maybe an extra "well" or "yeah but" then the rest was the same. Why are they there? BECAUSE BIOWARE.

Factions make no sense... you don't pick one, you level them all up. There's no real difference between them. I've played this game for days now and I for the life of me can't tell the difference between them. Or why I level some up by doing certain things? Why are they there? BECAUSE BIOWARE.

Optional NPC dialog that usually provides some backstory or become interesting threads are just "Oh you're a freelancer cool... blah blah blah freelancer honor" what was the point of that? Was that supposed to immerse me into this city's people or... maybe give civilians something to do? I don't know but it's there to waste time BECAUSE BIOWARE.

Nothing fits well. High paced action will literally grind to halt so we can get a cutscene of our character doing something. Just our character.... not my 3 other friends I did the mission with. Like Destiny does... you see your friends in some scenes in Destiny. But here they might as well not exist in my story. Where do they go during cutscenes? Into their own personal cutscene where my character isn't in. Why? BECAUSE I actually don't know. Why this game literally forces co-op on you to do NOTHING with it in the story makes no sense. It wants to be an immersive story driven game but forced co-op doesn't make sense.

But it's not all bad. The Javelins are fun to control, flying and combat is amazing. Some boss battles are really fun and challenging. There is fun to be had here. But I can't believe I'm saying this... Destiny 2 did it better. There's more stuff to do. Characters have their own special role. The Javelins aren't different from each other and feel extremely similar all except the Colossus. And Destiny 2 goes "blah blah blah hand wave story now go kill stuff!" Here it's go kill a few things but ONLY a few things... cause you have to listen to 5 minute long conversation then get the next objective marker. Kill a few more things wait for dialog to be over and then the objective will finally come in on the map. Rinse repeat then the mission is over before you know it.

So it would be a 7/10 as it's fun but not good. However the game crashes and freezes every hour! Literally the EA servers can't handle this game. Friends drop out of missions at least twice every time. And it's like this on PC, Xbox and PS4. This game is so unstable half my friends decide to stop playing through a mission cause they can't stand being kicked so often we just end up playing something else.

This isn't BioWare... it's EA's BioWare. And it shows.

Evidence of another instance where the company who publishes the game want's the consumer to know what they should want. The backlash by EA and Microsoft telling people that they don't know what they want when we have had a standard set by great games like BL2 back in 2012. Then again they took time away from giving the consumer what they want to spend precious dev time for microtransactions in a full price experience without giving a worthwhile experience.

If a movie was incomplete on release with a "promise crucial scenes and special effects would be added later" no one would watch the movie on release. Unacceptable in the video game market when the standards are trying to be set by the publisher and not the consumer.

EA keeps pushing graphics as though they are the headliner to great games while Nintendo makes game of the year worthy titles annually on a handheld. Anthem is a weak experience on ground this company has treaded in before. It's the equivalent of Boyhood the video game. All those years of development, wasted.

While Anthem does feature some strong entertaining features that make it somewhat enjoyable to play, it is heavily outweighed by all its current issues. As someone who played from the Alpha up the official launch, much remains to be resolved. I've sent them personally a message that it would be better to delay a game till its polished rather than rushing a release filled with bugs.

Regarding the story, it feels so cheesy and generic that there isn't any sense of accomplishment once you finish it. The promises of our choices having consequences in the game was simply a lie which is surprising for BW as they are known for bringing in some of the best rpg stories out there as someone who played more than once the trilogy of Mass Effect.

The graphics might look nice and great in this day and age but it is by war the worst optimized game which doesn't make use of your current computer hardware even with the latest parts. The E3 2017 demo still remains one of the most spectacular trailer I've ever seen. It's simply a bummer that the game was heavily downgraded up to its current state. From my understanding, a lot happened since then and new people joined into the development and made changes to it.

The loot itself is a mess, the fact that they need the feedback from players to understand something so obvious makes me worry about what was going on during the development. There is no mini-map, no way to checkpoint on a map nor a text-chat.

While their communication has been premium, the same problems have been expressed since the Alpha and are still present in this current version of the game which was also promised to be way better and have a lot of fixes but it just keeps having more problems whenever they add new patches. Only time will tell if Anthem will survive all this chaos.

As someone who spent over 89 hours into the game, I'm starting to feel burned out as there is nothing rewarding about the grinding either. The rewards are simply vinyl which doesn't justify the high amount of grinding for it plus we're missing a bunch of gear variety pieces and emotes which they planned to sell via the vendor with coins and shards which is a bummer.

I definitely do not recommend this game in its current state but it could be a fun ride for some of you out there. However, if you are a veteran gamer, be prepared to experience some of the worst and best-looking game ever made by BW.

You've probably heard a lot of bad press about this game coming in and you're wondering if it's as bad as they say. It isn't. It's much, much worse.

Gameplay is a disjointed mess, with the actual game broken up by a mandatory first-person segment where you move at the speed of smell inside a too-large city to pick up quests and have pointless conversations. You can't spend any significant amount of time in your suit without having to return to this hub, which is hands-down one of the worst elements of the game. To get in or out of this area you have to sit through multiple loading screens that take roughly half a minute or more on even the best hardware.

The suits and the movement mechanics -one of the only parts of this game to receive plaudits- are hampered by a frustrating overheat mechanic that prevents you from flying for more than a few seconds without crashing even outside of combat.

You can't manage your inventory or customize your suit without sitting through two loading screens, one to get into the interface and one to get out of it. Both again 30 seconds or more.

The suit gameplay itself has the potential to be fun but the enemies are dumb and there's little variety or challenge.

The game feels at best half finished, if that.

It will take monumental changes at a level that I don't think Bioware or EA will be willing to make in order for this game to be worth playing. At a minimum that will mean:

-Doing away with Fort Tarsis or switching to a third-person view for these segments, speeding up your movement inside, and removing loading screens.

-Removing the heat mechanic outside of combat entirely or making it a buff for those who elect to manage it rather than a constant frustration for those that don't.

-Making it so that you can manage inventory and customize your suit without having to sit through 2-4 loading screens.

Why is it unlikely these changes will be implemented? Because if you take away all the frustrating penalty mechanics and busywork to get missions or customize your suit it becomes much more apparent how little content there is in the game and how all of it is very one dimensional and sameish.

Stay well away. This game needs at least another year of dev time.

Game is so boring, everything in this game is repetitive. Loading screen time is a joke in this game. The only positive is graphic and facial animations. This is a unfinish video game. What a shame Bioware.

Contrary to most reviews, I believe this game rests on the upper-end of the middle. It has a lion's share of faults, but complimented by enough good to make the experience entertaining, if not wholly fulfilling.

I'll attempt to outline my points in pros (+) and cons (-), and explain why I consider them such. As a preface, I've sunk about 115 hours into the game to date. With that said,

I'll attempt to outline my points in pros (+) and cons (-), and explain why I consider them such. As a preface, I've sunk about 115 hours into the game to date. With that said, let's begin.

(+) Gameplay is smooth and well-executed, insofar as movement and combat are concerned. Flight is an aspect of the game that fits seamlessly into shooting, melee and use of abilities, and at its best action in Anthem feels visceral and flowing.

(+) The world is beautiful, and the lore team has done an excellent job with pumping it full of places and nuggets of information to discover.

(+) Free-roam is (in my opinion) a direct upgrade over its competition, especially when stood next to games like Destiny. Public events are entertaining, if a bit repetitious, and the verticality of the world really lends to the experience.

(+) Javelin design is interesting and fairly well balanced, with every option filling a niche that is both impactful in group settings and uniquely capable of dealing with tough content.

(+) The story isn't terrible -- merely 'safe'. It doesn't take any leaps or bounds, and it suffers at times from predictability, but it doesn't bore. The characters involved are for the most part well-written, and I never found myself tiring of their company.

(+) The way high-tier loot interacts with gameplay and the mechanics therein can be very interesting, and there is potential for a great deal of nuance.

(+) Potential. Anthem is brimming with it, provided Bioware is of a mind to capitalize.

    Onto the negative.

(-) Anthem's combat is a double-edged sword, and at its worst, it is a confusing mash of particle effects, bullet sponges and more than a few glitches. Enemies will teleport away, combos won't trigger, and so on. By the end of the game, shooting takes a back seat to abilities, whilst enemies aimbot (literally aimbot. Scar grunts fire bullets that will curve and track you behind cover).

(-) Repetitious game design begets fighting a lot of the same enemies, which in turn saps a lot of the replayability out of the game. This is nothing new to the looter shooter genre, but i nevertheless feel it worthy of mention.

Almost every unique boss encounter, or enemy encounter, is limited to story missions. Freeplay and contracts (general missions) do not feature these mechanics whatsoever. Strongholds have gimmicks of their own, but with how much the game encourages players to farm them, the novelty dissipates quickly.

(-) The loot has a nasty downside. Prior to a recent fix, it was entirely possible to get high tier equipment that yielded stats objectively worse than items acquired through leveling. It is also purely based off RNG, and while the devs did implement ways of targeting specific categories (equipment and components), the latter is limited to a one-per-day timer. Duplicates are a serious, serious issue in this game, and if you choose to grind gear in the end game, expect a minimum of 50% of your drops to be duplicates with useless stats.

Crafting appears to have been intended to offset this, but it doesn't ameliorate the issue of actually -getting- gear. To craft masterworks (the highest tier of gear below Legendaries), you have to first loot the item in question and then either use it to kill a specific amount of enemies or in a set number of public events before you can craft it.

TL;DR - If you can't get an item to drop, you can't craft it. RNG is bad, and duplicates with trash or worse stats are VERY common.

{-} Endgame has a very poor system of tiering. Grandmaster difficulties vary wildly from 'manageable but hard-hitting bullet sponges' to 'you absolutely must have an organized team to do even basic missions' as early as the leap from GM1 to GM2. As it currently stands, there is little to no reason to even attempt these higher tiers of difficulty as GM1 has a very similar chance of dropping the same gear without requiring a larger time investment.

Lastly, though not necessarily a con, the game is a live service and does feature MTX. I haven't had any real issues with them, but the difference between grinding for in-game currency and paying is steep. Very steep. You will never have enough to fully clean out the in-game store without paying, or skipping rotations to save.

In closing, Anthem is a fun experience that lacks longevity, brimming with potential but shrouded in uncertainty. I've put 115 hours into the game, and at this point in time, I don't feel terribly inclined to add any more.

I'll be keeping an eye on it as updates roll out, and I encourage anyone interested to do the same. And if you're thinking of buying it, I suggest you don't. Rather, consider Origin Access (PC), which'll give you the full game for a month priced at 15$.

The negatives: Missions are repetitive, some of them clearly a time gate to slow the progress of the player. Loading screens.... loads of them and slow, even after the day 1 patch. Endgame

No BS, straight to the scores:

Graphics quality: 8/10. It could look better, but it is nonetheless awesome. My only gripe is that the reasons I am given to explore the beautiful world are bad, and the world itself is ultimately empty. Free play allows you to explore that wonderful world, but there is nothing to see but the environments and randomly despawning enemies. If I wanted that, I would take a road trip.

Animation: 8/10. Again, same thing. Beautiful. Huge improvement over Andromeda, but same gripe, with the addition that some menu animations have delays (not lag, but delay) and some attack animations force the player to commit for way to long.

Story: 4/10. Honestly one of the worst parts of the game, issues aside. The story is generic. It is boring. It is short. The story itself is 10-15 hours long, artificially made longer by an arbitrary quest that requires you to grind needlessly, and is poorly explained. This is unfortunate, given Bioware’s history, but I did not take that into consideration when assigning this score.

Characters: 5/10. Characters in this game range from well-realized to caricatures. It is a sad, but unfortunate truth that most of the humor in the game is bad, and most of the writing around the characters is equally bad. Again, unfortunate given the developer is Bioware, but I did not take that into consideration when assigning this score.

Customization: 7/10. Javelin customization in this game is innovative. It is cool. And it will be hard to find people who look the same as you if you genuinely put time into making “your” javelin yours, outside of skins. I love it. Sadly, it doesn’t make up for the disgusting load times you will have to deal with in continuously entering and exiting the menu to do said customization. And unfortunately, the novelty of the innovation here is lost when you release you lack more than a couple of options in changing the physicality of javelins, instead of merely their color and materials.

Gameplay: 10/10. The actual gameplay – when you actually get to play – is fast. It is exciting. It is awesome. It’s only flaws stem from other areas. Sadly, it doesn’t carry the game in the same way great gameplay sometimes can.

Voice-acting quality: 7/10. The voice acting quality for the most part, is great. The lines they are given to say range from bad to suitable though, which really holds the talent back. It’s really hard to give a higher score when what the characters say is either cliché, consistently obnoxious, or just poorly written. It’s not the voice actor’s fault, but it does affect the quality of their performance.

Music: 4/10. This one is so weird, because the actual OST of the game is great. But the ways in which it was implemented into the game are bad. This is an issue I have never had with a game before, and honestly boggled my mind while playing. There were also multiple times when my sound just… turned off. This was supposed to be fixed at launch. Eventually, it got to the point when I turned the game’s music off and opened the OST to listen to in the background. That has to suck for the composer, because they did a really great job, but their work was poorly implemented. Plain and simple. This issue is actually very similar to the voice acting issues – an implementation issue, not a quality issue.

Price of game: 1/10. The price of a game is always the last thing I rate, because I want to look back at all of the other scores I have given a game and really think about the value I have gotten out of said game. The harsh truth, is that Anthem is not worth $60. It just isn’t. The game, with how little content it has in its current state, is worth $10-15 at best. It isn’t meant to be an insult. It’s just meant to be the truth. The game is very shallow and feels more like it has just entered the early access stage of its development then the official launch window. And while what is there is no doubt fun, the fun doesn’t last as long as it should or needs to when the price tag is $60.

Extrinsic positive/negatives: +0/-2 points for dramatic load times, both in length and repetition, even using RAID 0.

Average score: 5.8/10. Anthem had the opportunity to learn lessons from those that came before and failed. However, they nonetheless present a subpar looter shooter experience for fans of the genre who only care about the gameplay and need a quick fix. Sadly, because the game lacks content, that fix won’t last. You should not play this game yet. But if you feel you simply must play this game now, do not buy it. Do not buy it. Pay for premiere and try the game out. You will complete everything the game has to offer very quickly, and will have plenty of time left over to experiment or play another game offered by EA.

(This review will be updated when Anthem becomes a complete game).

Core design features also destroy immersion with constant loading screens, poorly designed menus, and a complete lack of basic features like squad communication, waypoint markers, ping systems, in-game menus, gear stats etc. In short the game feels very incomplete and unfinished. I've played demos that are more finished and polished than this "final" product.

Sure, new content is coming -- but, that won't fix the many core issues that slowdown, cripple, and choke the life out of an experience that could have been amazing. This is far from the "Bob Dylan of video games" ...

It has potential and can be entertaining during the first couple of hours, but you realize of its problems since the beginning: buggy, more loading screens than gameplay, laughable IA, microtransactions, lack of content and variety, disappointing story by Bioware's standards, the most unimaginative grind wall to progress in the "plot",.. and more importantly Mass effect died for this.

I've updated my original review of this game from a 5 to a 0, due to the numerous game breaking bugs. As things stand today, this game is not worth investing any time in, and that's coming from someone who got it for free.

EA knows this thing is a turd. They have to, there is no way they could not. Don't expect major fixes to be forthcoming, this will probably be the last game Bioware makes.

    --------------------------------------
Currently, the average user score for Anthem on PC sits at 4.2 Chalk one up for crowdsourcing, because that's just about what it deserves. Anthem is not a disaster the way some are saying, nor is it a triumph. It's a thoroughly mediocre game; beautiful and fast, but also extremely shallow with terrible design decisions throughout.

The lack of social space in the game is the real head scratcher. It makes the entire world feel dead, or at least more dead than it already would. Fort Tarsis has the look of an area that was lifted right out of a 90s adventure game. People are moving around, but if you watch them, they aren't going anywhere, just following a simple script to move back and forth between two points. NPCs tell you they are leaving, then continue standing right where they are.

For some reason you can see other players in the Launch Bay, but not Tarsis. This is never explained, but even if it were it makes no difference, because you can't interact with the other players anyway.

The open world is beautiful, and strange. And dead. It's as if Bioware spent all their dev resources on level designers and graphic artists, with no one left to design an actual game.

Right now, this game is worse than Destiny 2, or even The Division. It's probably on par with where D2 started, and a little bit better than the disaster The Division was on launch. And that's the silver lining; if Bioware commits the resources, the bones are there to make a good game, just like both those games did, after countless patches and dev hours.

Will EA give them the time to fix it, and do they know how? Guess we'll see.

I played the main campaign well before max level; and even the grind to get from there to level 30 was a bit mind-numbing. The masterwork items are making it slightly interesting once you reach max...but that's about it. I won't spoil the ending to the story-line here, but what was the point of the little after-bit that doesn't go anywhere? It made me feel like I had reached the halfway point of the game, and then it stopped.

I really wanted this game to be awesome, and it's just not. I'll probably continue to play it a bit longer, or until one of the other big games of 2019 comes out, but I'm sad that this one will likely sit on the shelf until they expand/improve it substantially.

Is this the end of Bioware? Bland. Generic. Utterly lacking in creative vision. Result feels like something an AI would build if it were told to mimic a 'loot shooter.' Gameplay/loot/loading issues abound. Amount of content is about what you'd expect from an early alpha build. One struggles to imagine how it took 5+ years to get to this point.

The "game" does not deliver what EA promissed a year ago. They gave a mega hype in the shooter looter community to deliver the buggiest game I ever played. I'm not a "hate" nor even closer, but I leave you with a question. Do u buy a car to receive the wheels 1 year later? Think about it. As same as Pay for a game that waste your time with loading screens and a serious bad performance in a midle specs PC.

Combat is about what I expect. It's fun and yo have some ways to customize it. The better gear the better the results.
Being Bioware, you expect a great story but they wanted to go in a different direction. So even though I didn't expect a big story, I see a lot of people hurt by not having a great one. I admit it is lacking and though the game looks great it doesn't feel alive.

I imagine in a few months it will improve the bugs but they are going to need to improve the dialogue. I still think the Frostbite engine still doesn't deliver but bioware has to use it so what can you do.
I think the some positive marks come from the team saying they like ideas and want to put them in the game. I don't think the game is for everyone and I think it shows with the reviews. As a collective, we need to hold game company's and publishers accountable for day 1 patches. Ship a completed game or delay it until finished.

Maybe if Bioware stopped shipping incomplete trash to beat some arbitrary publisher deadline, their reputation wouldn't be in the toilet.

Rated this a 3 because it looks nice. That's it. Game play consists of tired and terrible "hold this point against enemy waves!" or "bring x number of shiny things to this shiny thing!" missions over and over. Guns are all generic sounding and feeling, abilities are just there to spam out with little thought to how to effectively set up combos. Would have been nice to see some clear guidance on how the combo system is supposed to work.

The Bioware storytelling is a mere shadow of old, with lore and exposition shoehorned into the awful (slow!)walking-simulator that is the games main "hub", Ft. Tarsis. Boring characters, boring exposition, inconsequential choices in dialogue trees. But at least the game looks nice, and flying is fun, whee!

Oh, and you better believe the microtransactions are fully fleshed out, get those coins so you can upgrade your suit's appearance! It's truly like they needed a "game" to build around their money-grubbing appearance engine. 8 bucks for a javelin skin? Nope, nope, nope.

Terrible, terrible game, not good for Bioware, not even good as an indie game.

Rather than echo the positive reviews here, I will refute the nay-sayers. Made an account on Metacritic just for this purpose. It seems like gamers drift towards negativity for its own sake sake these days, which is sad for games that DON'T DESERVE THE HATE - like Anthem

Disclaimer: I am a console gamer. I suspect much criticism for Anthem is unhappy PC people. If PC players (our self-proclaimed 'Lords') are gonna **** about how console-intended games (like Anthem) don't work perfectly on their $5000 space laser-powered master-race machines, then I will **** about their hygiene, and about how their PC-specific games don't run like water on my console. Now that I've alienated a section of my audience, lets begin ;)

    1. "Every mission feels the same": The immense variety in the world around you and the range of ability, weapon and class combinations makes old fights/ missions re-playable again and again. Color outside the lines. Think differently and take some damn initiative. Stop waiting for someone to hold your hand.

    2. "Weapon play 0/10": Even the harshest critics admit Anthem's combat system is amazing. Ya, if you choose a high-damage sniper rifle with smaller magazine, you'll be re-loading a lot. So, craft/ find/win an armor upgrade that increases clip size. Or consider using a higher magazine gun

    3. "Graphics are terrible": Are you insane? Again, even haters agree it's gorgeous... PC vs console rivalry does not make for a game review

    4. "Loading screens everywhere": There are loading screens in 3 places. a) Entering a dungeon b) Returning to base c) Changing armor loadout/ appearance. You may need to wait for your party to load if playing co-op. None of these things should be controversial

    5. "Game cannot be played solo": This is B**S*** Some of the most fun I've had is flying around by myself like at the beginning of the game, landing on an old temple and switching to my sniper rifle to get a good view of an enemy base to count troop numbers, high-value targets, and to plan. Freeplay mode allows you to run solo. And it's epic. I was itching to get back into single-player mode the soonest I could, and it was glorious

    6. "Story/ writing issues": This criticism has some merit. The 'show-don't-tell' rule applies to narratives in video games like anywhere, which it seems the writer forgot (in some places). It IS done properly in some areas, but a new lead writer is needed. Luckily, Drew is no longer working on Anthem (Goodbye Drew!). The world that was built around the scene A-to-B plot is deep, lore-filled and has so many opportunities for further narrative exploration. Can't wait to see what a good writer will do with it (EA, if you're reading this and hiring writers, hmu babe)

    7. "Lacks environmental diversity": Lush jungles, underwater worlds, ancient stone ruins, abandoned alien facilities, underground caves, alien bases/ camps, and more. Did you even play the whole game or speed run it in 2 hours to justify a bad review and to meet an article deadline? Jesus

    8. "Anthem = Destiny-lite": Dear reader, I encourage you to Google 'Anthem v.s. Destiny big differences'. Don't be sheep

    9. "Server drops": All online games have disconnects. Name an online game that had 100% perfect connection 100% of the time. I've been playing since official launch on Feb. 22 and dropped only 3 times. That's better than Halo 3 matchmaking. I defy you to show me an game without drops

    10. "Loot system": I view the loot in Anthem as a 'nice-to-have-but-not-necessary'. The point of the game is not to make players chase loot forever. Which is a good thing. Gear for the sake of gear is stupid and boring. Give me freedom. Give me flight, good combat, intrigue and challenge me. Give me more Anthem

    11. "No respawn": I like this feature, personally. Firstly, THERE IS RESPAWN in Freeplay solo-player mode. In co-op missions, your teammates must save you, and if all are incapacitated, you all respawn together. I was never down for longer than a minute, because all members of a team are needed to beat enemies etc. I like saving people who fall because I have a hero-complex which my psychologist says is unhealthy

    12. "Buggy": I have seen no bugs. None. Zero. Consider playing Anthem on console, like it was intended

    13. "Lootboxes/ in-game transactions": There are no lootboxes in Anthem. None. This is a lie. The only in-game purchases are for optional skins/ armor that don't affect gameplay. The criticism of Anthem has reached new and insidious proportions with this complaint (appropriately saved for #13 on this list)

As I near the character limit that Metacritic has given me for this wall-of-text, I'd like to reflect on the state of the gamer/review community in general. It really seems like nothing is enough anymore. Even without lootboxes, people cry lootboxes - or something else - anything else to get views. Outrage sells

I’m amazed people have yet to figure out why their beloved developers have fallen. This is what happens when you stop hiring, promoting, and rewarding based on merit. Skill, talent, work ethic have no place in such industries anymore. Arbitrary diversity, identity politics, and SJW activism have destroyed modern videos games. The result is Anthem.

Freeplay is anything but freeplay, small world and 4 random people (unless you start with your own group). Invite system is weird and awkward. Great character customization which is fun but needs a lot of coin ir real money to shine. A pity. Maybe a couple years and expansions in, it will become the gem it could be. Still enjoyable though, and an 8 seems appropriate, mainly because it may develop its missing features. Expand

Anthem has it's issues but i honestly don't think it's worse than andromeda, in terms of story it has moments where it feels like bioware held it back, writing is a little mediocre at times but gameplay and audio design is on point, flying is fun and combat is the best we've seen from bioware, this game could have been amazing but it's out of bioware's comfort zone and main targetAnthem has it's issues but i honestly don't think it's worse than andromeda, in terms of story it has moments where it feels like bioware held it back, writing is a little mediocre at times but gameplay and audio design is on point, flying is fun and combat is the best we've seen from bioware, this game could have been amazing but it's out of bioware's comfort zone and main target audience, if ea had chosen to let a different company make this or the game was more story focus it could have been amazing, still i enjoy anthem and would reccommend it after the free dlc comes out as story feels short at the moment and not worth £54 at the moment. I will surely have more fun here.

This is what happens when you make a game for your shareholders, rather than gamers. The quality and care is nonexistant in this title. We got some hints that Bioware was going downhill after the disaster known as Mass Effect: Andromeda. This game solidifies that. Mark my words: their next game will be trash too: their next Dragon Age game.

Without a mic there is no way to communicate as there is no chat. Or Quickplay always puts you into the bugged missions other players are leaving from so you need to waste your time on that.
Even The Division had less bugs.
I don't know if they have a playtesting/quality management department but if they do it consits of 1 person only. For a AAA developer the amount of bugs is not acceptable. The only other good thing is i only spent 15 bucks and will stop playing when TD2 comes out.

This can be a good game, in a year or 2. But not anytime soon.

It's a beautiful game and give you some idea how it feel to be like ironman. Or I hoped. As a shooter-looper game I actually don't mind the grinding part that most complaint. For me it's something that give me some drive to keep playing, so I am always making some progress when I want to have some few hours of fun. But even with this mindset, this game is purely gold on how a lazy developer could do. For whatever stupid lame story reason, you have to go here defend that, collect this. Every freaking single time with zero variation. And to "prove your worthiness" you need to do something that other normal game would only ask you to do as achievement instead of actual gameplay. What's worse? if you are in a team, only 1 guy who make the kill shot or picking up are counted. So basically its asking you to play solo.

it's just boring as hell. The gunplay is so weak that i feel like it's weaker than the division 1, it's basically just all about your ability, which I really hate it being so supernatural and witch like effect instead of being a true "mech". The flying part is so mediocre and slow that it's ruin the whole experience to me.

If you want some fun shooter looter, go to warframe. If you want to spend some money, find some charity organization or buy some cosmetic for warframe. That game is a free to pay that's done right.
If you want to save Bioware/Mass Effect, no it's done for. Only thing you could do is don't buy anything from EA again and hope it's gone so it won't keep ruining and then closing the game studio.

Anthem looked very promising before its release, something that most games share with each other when a big publisher is in charge of the marketing. However, the mostly transparent and very down-to-the-community approach that the devs took by being very active on twitter, reddit and on their livestreams build up at least hope, that Bioware would've found back to their former glory.

And at its core, Anthem is a really strong game. The gunplay is solid, the different Javelins with their unique abilities have a good flow to them (despite some balancing issues) and the flying is not just a gimmick but something to factor in on every encounter. When there is one thing, where the game lives up to its expectations, it is the javelin design and the combat system surrounding it.

However, the good core of the combat is overshadowed by technical issues and a repetitive gameplay that rarely motivates you to spend time in the 'so called' endgame.

    Technical Issues / Performance:
First up: If you don't own an SSD, don't play Anthem. The game has loading screens for everything, including the Forge (which is there you change your items/javelin build) and it will take between 40-90 seconds (depending on the activity) to leave the loading screen. Sometimes, you even get a loading screen on top of a loading screen because the rest of your team already headed forward and the game forcibly pulls you to the rest of your team, which results in another loading screen.

There is a a sheer abundance of glitches and bugs that accompany the performance of the game which makes playing Anthem an ongoing gamble if you can actually play a mission or stronghold at all or if you have to reload everything, sometimes multiple times. It is fair to say that the state in which Anthem launched, is a complete embarrasment to their QA team or whoever is responsible for that mess that is in a worse technical state than the demo.

    Gameplay:
The gameplay of Anthem knows only three specific types of game encounters:
    > Point Defense
    > Fetch numbers of item A and bring it to ooint B
    > Kill stuff until your mission updates

Those three pillars of mission design repeat themselves over and over, even within the storyline, where Bioware could have gone nuts with all the cool stuff their storyline had to offer, if it had been properly executed. The game doesn't try to hide the three game mechanics from you and it doesn't try to mask it. Instead you kill the same 2-3 types of enemies of enemies over and over again, fetch the same items (not even those change, there are like 2-3 presets for them as well) until you get one unique bossfight at the end of the storyline and thats literally it.

The strongholds, which are supposed to be the endgame activity, have, despite a plethora of technical issues (which caused Bioware to deactivate quickplay for them temporarily) a good design despite the third one, which is just the last story mission tagged as a Stronghold.

    Storyline:
Bioware is known for their good and deep story in their games and in some interviews, they also acknowledged, that story would be a centerpiece of Anthem as well. However, the story itself was bland and uninspired and felt much more like an introduction to something bigger that we have yet to see. Sometimes there are bits where your character interacts with his dialogue partner, mostly during lenghty dialogue cutscenes and in those moments, you can really see that Bioware still got what it takes to tell a good story. Those cutscenes really sucked me in but where far too rare in order to make the otherwise bland story special.

The world of Anthem is so rich with interesting characters and unique features, however compared to their previous games, Anthem fails to tell an interesting storyline. In fact, the main campaign isn't even in line with their leveling curve and I finished the main storyline at around level 19 of 30 and had to grind 11 levels in strongholds, missions and contracts until I was able to experience the endgame.

    Endgame:
Anthems endgame is currently pretty much non-existent. If you had to call some part of the game "endgame", it would be unlocking the Grandmaster difficulties and playing the same three strongholds over and over in order to achieve legendary and masterwork items. And in fact, I think that would keep people at least entertained until their content patch in march hits. The numerous technical issues and horrendous loading times however, do a perfect job of blocking you from enjoying that form of content.

    Verdict:
Anthem has a strong base, but lacks in nearly every part despite its core gameplay, which is at least solid. You will only enjoy this game, if you somehow don't experience all the technical issues others are experiencing and if you fall in love with the gameworld. In any other case, I'd advise skipping this title. I think myself lucky that I only paid 15 Euros for EA premier access for this game.

After completing the storyline and moving onto what's currently the endgame content, I'm perfectly happy with my purchase. I went into the game expecting to have something solidly playable, fun, and good for co-op. On that rubric, the game far exceeded expectations. The gunplay is solid and mixing/matching abilities is loads of fun. Every Javelin is useful too.

While I wouldn't consider the game perfect, I think it's exactly where I could reasonably expect a Large Multiplayer Role-playing Shooter (LMRPS) to be this far after release.

After a while, suspicion sets in: perhaps EA doesn’t believe in BioWare anymore, and had them release not only unpolished, but basically unfinished product to cut losses and avoid another total rework. [Issue#237, p.44]

If you want to see Anthem’s lush jungle and glistening Javelins, do it right away — this game is losing audience fast, and there’s almost nothing to do after the campaign ends. Or check it out on YouTube to save yourself some nerves and money.

It's obvious that Anthem didn't have enough development time, but had some great potential. It's a real shame, that everything turned out this way. Even now, the game can bring out positive emotions. Hasty climbers have sudden falls. No matter how ironic this proverb may seem, it's incredibly relevant for Anthem.
