Alien Isolation has done an amazing job at sucking me in, this game is intense and visually stunning and it does and incredible job of recreating the look and the feel of the first movie. It's like being able to experience the first Alien movie all over again, with the added terror of not being able to glance away from the screen.

Huge congrats to the developers for nailing this. I would say people who voted this a 0 (The user Howard for example) are mentally deficient internet trolls.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The atmosphere at the beginning of the game is really quite something and when the alien first shows up it's pretty terrifying. You probably will try to hide a lot, crouch and go very slowly the first few times you strive to circumvent the beast and provided that you play this game on hard difficulty setting (as you should), you will die rapidly and frequently. This is due to the omniscient AI, which somehow always knows where you are (even if you clearly tricked the alien into going in a totally different direction) and is glued to the player, while mostly ignoring other survivors and completely ignoring Androids. It goes from terrifying to frustrating all too quickly here.
After a while I figured out that not going slowly, breaking the line of sight and only hiding as a last resort is much easier, which is counterintuitive and not really what a stealth game should be about. The game still manages to built atmosphere and tension though.
At the midpoint of the game you'll be introduced to the flamethrower. As soon as you acquire this gadget, the Alien is not a threat anymore. You just hit it with a burst and it flees. Now the alien is no more than a chore to be dealt with. It will pop up every once in a while, sometimes as soon as 15 seconds after you last repelled it. This can get quite tedious. You will still die to some of those unfair alien appearances though.
I've read some reviews where people claim the flamethrower fuel is scarce. Not true in the slightest; it only takes one gush of flame to repel the alien, which consumes about 6 or 7 points of ammo. I stopped hiding as soon as I got the flamethrower and never had less than 400 fuel for the rest of the game ...why they would add a weapon this gamebreaking I do not know.
After you deal with the alien for the first time, the game evolves into a mediocre shooter during the midgame. A barrage of angry androids are thrown at you to disassemble, which is very easy to do, because they don't have any weapons and can't shoot back. 2 shotgun rounds to the face, 6 pistol shots, 1 stun baton hit followed by 7 melee attacks, EMP's, Molotovs, Pipebombs, and the OP bolt gun, all of these deal with them very quickly and with close to no risk. Even human enemies are more dangerous, they at least shoot back. I found this part of the game to be overly easy; on hard difficulty.

After experiencing all these flaws, I still found Alien Isolation to be a good game. The graphics are good, but nothing special, the sound is amazing and so is the voice acting. The story is a bit lacking, but it stays close to its role model and I especially enjoyed the flashback to the movie plot. The level design is also quite good, there is a lot of backtracking, but I didn't mind it that much (it would be a little odd to be wandering around a confined space station for 15+ hours and never see the same place twice).

All in all it's a game worth picking up. It's certainly not a perfect game and whoever rates it at 10 really needs to come down from that acid trip.

Ps: what's up with all those devices to open certain doors, it felt like playing Legend of Zelda from time to time.

Survival Horror. Why do we love these games? What are we expecting from a game of this genre when we first hit the play button? We love this genre, because it's not about the monsters, it's not about the setting really, it's about the player. While our emotions are amplified in a world where we can't predict what's waiting for us behind the corner, we feel more and more alive because we behave here as naturally as we would if we were really there. We would hide, we would listen for noises, we would walk with caution, and try to survive.
This game really brings us what we were hoping for. The beast is as majestic and smart, as I always imagined to be. Alan Dean Foster wrote some very good book adaptations of the movies and even enhanced the world created by Ridley Scott. It was about time, for the gaming industry to approach the concept with some vision.
Level design, atmosphere: captures the soul of the '79 movie without a doubt, also it's a bit familiar to those who played Dead Space (those guys could have made a mean Alien game also...I think). While the game does not innovate in many areas regarding the level design it gets the job done to create the setting for your deadly adventure through the station.
Musical score, art style, every little gizmo, CRT screen, everything shows that the designers were working hard to stay true to the original concept of Alien, the movie where all started.
If you are fan of the Alien series, pick up this game, it's worth it. If you are not, it is still one of the best survival horror games released lately, even if you don't feel that nostalgic scent of the original movie.
There are a few issues we can talk about... Facial animations are pretty stiff and unrealistic, lip sync is mediocre at best in cutscenes and plain bad otherwise. But this visual issues are not a big problem because we are not really here for that. And there is the story... while it's pretty good, I really feel like they should have been bolder when writing it. When someone tries too hard not to break any element that makes the game a true integration in the Alien universe somehow is too cautious when writing a story and any writer would suffer of the lack of freedom in their creativity.
Bottom line is: This is that type of game that will stay in your heart even when you are not playing, and every moment is a thrill when you are. I can only say: Thank you for that crew that finally brought us the Alien in it's true splendor in a game.

Everything about the game practically screams dedication and love towards the original movie. All props, environments and actors feel like straight from the original set and is a delight to look upon for a hardened Alien-fan like me. The game looks graphically good and performs well.

Ambience in the game is excellent, with various machines whirring and clicking about, dark corridors with flicking lights and rooms that always feel slightly too small. The space station is claustrophobic and well executed.

But that's about as far as the good things go. For the developers have forgotten one very basic thing: unknown scares you. And trust me when I say, the Alien will not be unknown to you. Not in the slightest. Always crawling around the vents, guided by an erratic "hunter a.i." the alien will kill you. Several times.

Practically, after the two first encounters with the alien, I grew so jaded towards it, that I no longer felt even a tinge of fear when it was prowling around. Especially as the game progresses and you will learn to know how the alien acts, you will most likely start to get annoyed by it.

And that is the greatest downfall of this game. The Alien, one of the greatest movie monsters around, has been reduced to an annoyance. A nuisance. After clocking several hours in to the game I am having serious doubts about whether or not I should bother to continue. In fact, I was forced to lower the difficulty from the hardest setting, because of the sheer tediousness of having to dodge the alien. This decision had nothing to do with the game being too difficult, and everything to do with the fact that the alien encounters are so tedious they were boring me to death. There is no tension, no horror, no thrill. It's simply business.

All in all, Alien: Isolation turns into a boring game of hide and seek, where if you fail, you are given few seconds (if that) to use up resources to scare off the aggressor, or you die and load the latest save.

It's a decent game with good graphics and awesome atmosphere, but it gets absolutely murdered by the developer's idea, that having to constantly dodge something is scary.

I can not with good conscience recommend this game, unless you're buying it somewhere cheap.

And the AI could be better. Sometimes, is like you're playing a Playstation 1 game. The enemies find and see you in unbelievable situations. This work kinda OK with the Alien or the robots (as they aren't human and could have better 'senses'), but the humans make it clear that the AI is not ok.

Yet, I think Alien Isolation is a good game, but with STUPID things that make it a 6/10. It's like they had to finish the game in a close deadline ?

Sound: Good stuff. Good use of positional audio and great dynamic music that also warns you of danger. Voice acting is really good.

Fear factor: Some people think that the alien takes too long to appear. I disagree. Buildup is really important in proper horror games. I found the introduction well done and effective. Up until the mid game, everything is well designed and tense. Then it goes downhill for a few hours, but picks up again towards the end. The game could have been slightly trimmed down and lost nothing, in fact it would feel more tightly paced.

Optimization/bugs: People are praising this game for its polish. Maybe they played a different game than me, or are judging it by usual CA standards of releasing a mangled carcass of a game and fixing it in a year or two. Yeah, for CA standards it's good, but it's nowhere near polished. In several occasions, events failed to trigger for me, which left me stuck, wandering around, trying to find out what I missed. Turns out I missed nothing and I had to reload the last save, go through another 30 minutes of sneaking and then pray the events would trigger properly this time. NPC's would not open elevators, the med lab white board would not update my objectives, and other things. As for optimization, the game runs well but it was EXTREMELY crash happy on my system. After several hours of experimentation, I eliminated the crashes by lowering my screen's refresh rate from 144hz to 60 hz, and playing the game in Windowed Fullscreen mode with Vsync on. If I tried increasing my refresh rate again, the game would promptly send me to desktop. Not acceptable. It's not 2007, people use varying refresh rates. Do some basic stability/compatibility testing, not go "it works on 60hz, it's a wrap". Ridiculous that I pay full price for a game and then have to test it for 3 hours to find a setup that stops it from crashing.

In conclusion, it's worth playing, but I suggest you wait. It's shaky and needs several patches, you may have problems that will test your patience.

Why this game deserves a 9: It's a game that's made to be played on hard mode, punishing your every mistake. That being said, they are extremely lenient on crouching. Crouching almost makes you invisible. I had plenty of times where an alien couldn't see me down the hall simply because I was crouched. I had many other times where I could just run around a table in circles and the alien would never find me.

Why people score poor on this game: It's hard. People who get frustrated score poorly. It's a trial and error game. If you want to survive better try laying down some traps to run to in case you mess up. And for all of you complaining that the Alien is too big and walks around...get over it. It's a way better idea in a horror game. Just the sheer heavy terror in the alien's footsteps tells you so many things about the creature you are trying to elude. He's not meant to be messed with.

Alien Isolation is the Alien game we have always wanted but never received. Completely removing the typical FPS "Guns Blazing" style and instead going with the full stealth game play is just what this genre needed. Beautiful environments mixed with tension building music and scary enemies created the perfect atmosphere. Definitely worth the purchase.

I got to say, I love this game. Playing it brings back all the joy of the original film from '79. The spaces, the equipment, the way everything is falling apart, the creepy droids, and of course the alien itself. While I love the Alien, and how it just goes around where it wants, I'm not as thrilled about dealing with the other survivors and droids. The most effective way to deal with them is to shoot them, but then that brings the Alien. Another low point is my two fellow survivors. I know so little about them, and really don't care about them. I have no motivation to help and or save them. Also, there is a lot of back tracking in this game. To get to your goal, you have to go back to the beginning of the level or earlier to do something. From the very start, there are areas you can't get to until you get a tool, that after several hours of play I still haven't gotten. The story line is crap so far, the voice acting is bland and often the mouths don't move with the words. For all the attention to detail this game has, I'm really disappointed in the acting. Despite all that, I love this game. It's very addicting. Just when you think you avoided the alien and come out from cover, it ends up right behind you and you die. There is a great amount of frustration in this game, but just getting to a save point is often a victory in and of itself. It's a game that has the atmosphere of bioshock, but none of it's gripping story line. Yet, it's just as addictive as bioshock. I give it a 9 because the graphics, the ambience, the lore is top notch. I knocked off because of the frustratingly way you have to often back track, the poor story line and limited character development. Expand

Plenty of games have had moments sheer terror and caused the occasional adrenaline rush (storming the beach in the original Medal of Honour springs to mind), but nothing comes close to this for the level of fear it manages to consistently maintain. And it's mostly down to the incredible soundscape of the game; it's rarely what you see that gets the adrenaline pumping, but all the little noises around you. Or when your tracker suddenly pings and you don't know why....

Speaking of adrenaline rushes, I genuinely think this game should carry some sort of health warning. No film I've ever watched, or game I've ever played, or indeed any extreme sport I've ever tried, has kept me in such a constant heightened state. I'm not a youngster any more and I stopped playing after an hour or so in the couple of sessions I've played as I was actually a little worried that being in such a state for so long probably wasn't doing my heart any favours. Especially the first time the alien found me and I ran and hid in a cupboard, only for it to suddenly rip the door off just as I thought I'd escaped....

One last point on the specs. I was stunned to find that it runs beautifully on my ageing gaming rig with all the setting at max. I didn't think my poor old Phenom II 965 and Radeon 6970 would ever be able to run a AAA game at max again, but this looks absolutely stunning and the frame rate never noticeably drops.

That said, enough freedom is provided to either backtrack or explore once you have obtained the necessary tools to unlock sections already covered. Doing this could be advantageous and recommended.

Various game modes are also provided placing you right in the action should it feel if the story is dragging a bit.

If you're expecting a "Hudson pulse rifle panic spray fest" experience as with colonial marines, this might not be the successor you are looking for.

    PROS:
    - Very detailed world with good ambience, it really feels like you are inside a rundown space station.
    - The Alien AI got some bashing, but I can say that it always kept me on my toes and posed a good challenged and instilled a sense of dread. The first 20 or so times will really freak you out.
    - VR implementation was good enough, far from perfect but it shows that the did indeed gave it some love.

    CONS:
    - A bit too long for its own good. By the middle/end of the game it drags a lot, reusing areas, forcing a lot of arbitrary backtracking (There's a scene where you have to run around through the same area back and forth 3 times). It's a bit like Dead Space: you go somewhere to do something, once you get there it doesn't work/it is useless/it's destroyed, so you are rerouted somewhere to do something else which will also not accomplish anything at all.
    - Gameplay gets a bit repetitive and later you learn how to game the Alien AI and that knowledge combined with the flamethrower makes it become more like a nuisance than a fearless unkillable stalker (granted, it happens after several hours of tense gameplay, so this actually felt like a relief).

Conclusion: If you have a DK2, don't think twice, get this game. Unless you don't like to experience dread and fear in a videogame or you have some serious heart condition.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off the game is visually amazing. The graphics and environment are top notch and the sounds and lighting are great, but gameplay is extremely lacking. I'm surprised it got such high reviews but then again, most people like games that require very little thought. The game forces you to play the way they want you to and you can't progress unless you meet the checkboxes the developers put in. If you just want a walk-thru game with a predetermined path that the developers hold your hand through then this game is for you.

The game is very linear and scripted to the point of predictability which I will explain more. Subtle things are quite annoying such as not casting shadows while standing in front of lights or unable to step over suitcases. Literally you are prevented from walking down a particular hallway because a small row of suitcases block the way, thus making the game feel even more linear and controlled. The story is driven by waypoints meaning as soon as you enter the area either a small cutscene or event occurs but only when you enter that specific spot or area. Another item I thought was silly was after blugeoning a person I could not pick up their pistol, odd right? Well you can get a pistol but a specific one the game tells you to pick up..

Adding to the scripting and predictability you will quickly learn when and why the alien appears. My first play through was on hard and after about 3 hours I figured out how to avoid ever seeing it. Additionally you will learn quickly where and when the alien is active. This predictability essentially made the game unplayable to the point that it wasn't scary nor tense at any point of the game.

    *SPOILER BELOW*

Basically the Alien operates only in areas where drones aren't and only comes out if you run or shoot so you can walk around freely without worry..Yes as long as you walk and not run you'll never be attacked by the alien.

The alien can appear almost any where if you make to much noise. You also risk attracting hostile human NPCs. Get both in the same room and you have a real mess.

This is not a shooter, so be prepared to hide, crouch through vents, and peer in horror at your motion detector as the beeping green blip comes closer and closer to you while you try to hold your breath and not make a noise.

The game is difficult, occasionally unfair, and has a checkpoint save system that reminds me of Dark Souls' bonfires. It all works great to build an incredible level of tension and fear, but it will also be frustrating to players who don't want to try something different to modern straightforward shooters with quicksave systems.

Technically, the game is a wonder. Graphics are the best I've ever seen, and they feel very well optimized for PC. Sound is even better. Every mechanical noise will bring you back to the original movie, and the music feels dynamic and oppressive, including some cues from the original movie soundtrack. The surround audio is also brilliant, and it's just as useful as your motion detector when trying to guess where the creature is.

I can't recommend this game highly enough for fans of the first Alien movie, OR fans of horror games. For everyone else, it will probably not be their cup of tea.

That "unpredictable" Alien A.I.? It's very predictable, I played on Hard and stood right in front of it, it didn't register, in fact the only time it did register is when it found another A.I. or I had to shoot it.

The level designs are just loops of circles that are confusing, to make it worse you have the most obscure way point system there is. Speaking of systems the save system is something that died back in the late 90's. You must manually save (no problem there,) at checkpoints (problem there.) There are 18 chapters, each chapter takes over an hour to complete, that is over double the length then the average game, something people would not speak out about, but when you get this linear and this boring there's a limit.

The story can be covered in one sentence and the play time is horrendous, 12 - 20+ hours of running down the same hallway to open doors. By hour 6 I was so bored I was done, I could not take a single second more. There is nothing to drive the player forwards. What's the point of going to open a door that you know is not only locked, but you'll have to turn on the power and restart the terminal as well.

I think I know why this rated so high, and that's because Metacritic DELETES REVIEWS! Yes this is the SECOND time I've had to rewrite a review because of silencing, here's hoping they will leave this one up because God forbid someone doesn't like a game.

Not only is it beautiful, but it is also one of the best optimized games I've ever seen. My system is not top of the line, and with all settings on ultra the game was running absolutely flawlessly. This game is a technical marvel.

The atmosphere and sound design is amazing, everything in the game has been so painstakingly created while keeping faith to its source material. Everywhere you look there is immense detail, so much work and passion went into this product and it shows.

It took me about 18 hours to beat the game, which is a really respectful length for a survival-horror game like this. Some complain it is too long but for me, a fan who has waited a long time to play it, the length felt perfect; I even could have gone for a little more. You actually get to fully explore the station you're on through the story, unlike games like Dead Space 2 where you only see a tiny fraction of the space of the structure.

The gameplay is stealth-focused, you're given some tools for deterring your many enemies but mainly you will be sticking to the shadows and hiding in cupboards as you make your way through the game. The alien, the prime antagonist of the game, is stunningly recreated and an absolute terror to deal with. This isn't your average horror game enemy, this thing is relentless. It is smart, it is fast, and it will punish the hell out of you for making a mistake. The other enemies you face are more forgiving but still deadly and they all have interesting reactions with one another.

The game uses a manual saving system with save points spread throughout its levels. For me this was a big plus as it cuts down on save scumming and gives you a real fear of failure, because if you die you may lose progress.

The story is solid and if you're a fan of the Alien series you will be delighted with all the extra lore this game provides to extend your favorite universe.

I honestly have no solid complaints about this game, some of the early segments can feel too hard but it's only because you don't yet understand what you're doing wrong. This game doesn't hold your hand, and you'll quickly learn what is getting you killed.

I cannot say enough good things about this game.

Creative Assembly, thank you for returning the Alien franchise to glory, and please bring us more.

I've been waiting patiently for this particular game to arrive. Much have been said by the developers. Promises was made. It all sounded almost too good to be true. A game with 1 real enemy. A game with no weapons to speak of. How could this work?

Well, first of all: The alien is really, really, REALLY well-made. From the sounds to the animations, to the AI and the unpredictable nature of it. It really does feel like you're facing off against the Alien movie xeno. And that was certainly the most important aspect of this game.

Next comes the challenge of making a game with only one enemy work. And this is done by throwing in some generic humans and some creepy synthetics. The humans are good for one thing: xeno-bait. Throw a noisemaker in their direction and enjoy the show.
At the beginning of the game they are really annoying, mostly because you have no gadgets available yet. But as the game progresses, you have so many opportunities for solving each situation, it becomes really strategic and fun... Oh, and did I mention that it's also scary as hell!!

The alien is introduced in an expertly way. Slowly! And after a few hours into the game, you get to know your enemy. Not in a way that you can predict it, oh no, but in a way that makes you act more strategic around it. You understand its flaws and how it behaves. You'll still get eaten time and time again. But it wouldn't be fun if you didn't.

I need to emphasize that this is a strategy/horror game. Each situation can be solved in a multitude of ways. And it's topped off with the unpredictable nature of the xeno. I really am in love with how they designed the game. Great work CA! You delivered on your promises. The franchise now has a game that lives up to the movie.

With that being said, when you first start Alien: Isolation, you'll enjoy it and be genuinely interested in the environment and feel a need to explore. Unfortunately this will fade away quite quickly and give way to repetition. The game is largely a stealth based game, it fools you into believing there's some form of combat survival by supplying a paltry amount of weapons, but don't be fooled, combat is never a good option in this game.

The game gets stale quickly as you sneak through halls, avoid androids and hope to god you don't fall victim to another alien. And while I think that is measured doses, this would have been great, I think largely ignoring the action element from the 'Alien' series was a big mistake. Alien was a Sci-Fi horror movie, but it also had strong bits of action as Ripley fought back for her life.

This is a good game for short bursts of game-play, but as soon as you feel frustrated, walk away, take a break and come back later. It could have been better, but it could have been worse. A average survival horror game at best, which is sometimes the best we can hope for.

I need to iron out a gripe a lot of people are having. In ALIEN it walked on two feet and did not scale walls or move on all-fours. The evolution of the Alien and it's movements evolved through the films. Albeit I find this element a let down as it would have added to the immersion and threat level. However it is true to the film in this respect. Somewhat to it's detriment.

Even without the Aliens unscripted AI this game would be brilliant with its well realised world that basically sits you in Ridley's idea for this universe buts its the Alien that sets this game apart from games like Outlast or Amnesia.

The issue most horror games have is predictable AI with set paths, while its still scary you can easily learn the enemies path and get into this repetition of waiting around a corner and then moving out when they've gone past, now while this does happen from time to time in Isolation with the other enemies (Androids and Humans), when you're dealing with the Alien there is no scripted path.
The fact that the Alien doesn't follow a path makes it so refreshing because theres no studying its path and then exploiting it, theres just you having to make quick decisions and using your available gadgets to improvise on the fly.
This is also another area games like Outlast and Amnesia have a problem with, giving you no way to defend yourself. Now while that may seem to be a good thing and be more scary, allowing you to have a fighting chance prevents the game from becoming boring and monotonous.

If you've been waiting for a proper Alien game this is as close as you're gonna get, great campaign length (took me 21 hours on Hard) and wonderful atmosphere make for one of the best survival horror games.

Unscripted events abound in this game. Whether it's the alien hunting you, or you battling it out with other survivors or the alien turning those same survivors into kibble thanks to a confrontation you engineered.....it's simply amazing. And scary. Holy hell is it scary.
People who claim its too frustrating or that they died too many times....this isn't the genre for you. And you're not playing properly. Sorry. You're not. I've died. But never to the point that it's frustrating. Careful, considered gameplay pays off.
People who whinge that you can't fight back.....sorry, you're wrong too. Unless shooting, braining, or burning androids and human adversaries doesn't count. It's simply that you need to consider whether the risk is worth that approach. And understanding that Amanda Ripley is not "Master Chief."
The AI does not cheat. The AI simply doesn't follow set routines. If you make noise, odds are it will investigate. If there's no reason to think you couldn't have left a corner of the map, that SOB will look for you with will and a purpose. You just need to figure a way out.
The length is fine. Could it have been trimmed a little? Sure. But it's never tedious. And frankly, I enjoyed every minute...every image..every sound. It's like you're in the flipping Alien universe. All that's missing are the smells.
Replayability? Yep. Survivor mode is awesome for a quick fix. They'll be adding to it as part of the season pass (yes, season passes are separate discussion but I think this one will be worth it). And even with the campaign, understand that outside of a few set events the alien will never be in the same place, never act exactly the same way every time you play. Items are in different locations. There are not guarantees. Hell, I'll play again to see just how far I can get without dying.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's not that this game is bad, for quite a bit it's actually pretty amazing. It's visually stunning, engrossing with atmosphere, and for a good bit of it absolutely terrifying. However, my main beef with the game isn't as some major outlets have said it's length, which is perfect. Any game should be this long, and it's a shame that anything can be considered "too long." My main beef has to do with the acquisition of a certain weapon, that may count as a small spoiler, be warned, but shouldn't to any seasoned fan of the franchise. That weapon is the flame thrower. The flame thrower thoroughly ruined this game. It turned the menace of the Alien into an annoyance. Instead of something that made me crawl everywhere from fright, the Alien became something that I was forced to repetitively deal with every time I heard him stomping around. Instead of being something I ran from it was something I went toward in order to flame him back into his hole, but this happened all to often. I found that after setting fire to the beast he would reappear not 30 seconds later in some cases, and force me to deal with him again so that I make any progress on the objective. It went from frightening, and fun to annoying and tedious all with the addition of one item to my inventory. Expand

I haven't played such a nightmarish experience in a long time. And that's a good thing. When you think the nightmare is over you are thrown into another one. It took me 22 hours to get through the campaign on hard. The difficulty is perfectly balanced. As long as you take your time and proceed carefully you should be fine most of the time.

The gameplay mostly consists of you sneaking, staying quiet, hacking, crafting items to distract enemies or impair them. The further you proceed on your different missions you will find upgrades for your tools that will allow you to access areas you earlier couldn't. You will also get your hands on upgrades for your make shift weapons. Lethal weapons will eventually become part of your inventory but it's recommended to avoid using them but the further you get in the game the more lethal situations will become and they will come in handy. You can backtrack if you want to, or explore areas that are not part of the current mission. If you do you might find secret audio logs, items and easter eggs. So the game never feels very linear but instead quite free which I haven't seen since early days of Resident Evil. Of course there's always imminent danger that waits for you to make a mistake. It's even more similar in the way that you have to save your game at save stations, but don't worry, you don't need an ink ribbon. However, the game doesn't pause when you save and it takes a while for the station to load up. Nor does the game pause when you bring up your inventory and crafting system, which is reminiscent of Dead Space.

The story is good and quite straight forward, and it does contain twists and turns that did make me jump with excitement and surprise. However I wish that the conclusion would have been more satisfying. The voice acting is solid but the lipsyncing is quite poor. Especially when it's in-game and not a cut-scene.

The game itself is very well built. At no time did I experience any performance loss, crashes or game glitches that interfered with the gameplay. During my long playthrough I only noticed one or two oddity not even worth mentioning. I played the game on ultra settings and the visuals are very impressive when it comes to lights and shadows. There so many details in the environment in this game that it's amazing. At a closer inspection though, some low-res textures can be found but overall an incredible looking game.
The sound design is perfect, it re-creates and expand upon all the sounds and music from the movie Alien that it makes you feel like you really are in that universe.
The physics are great with your body reacting to everything around you in the environment, you might for example accidentally kick something on the floor and cause a loud noise or tip over furniture etc.

The option menu is well fleshed out with many different visual settings, including FOV.

The different mechanics like crafting, hacking, using tools and weapons is very intuitive. For example when entering a passcode you use your numpad, or when re-loading a weapon you must hold R to reload a full magazine, if you just press R once it will only load one bullet for example. Computer interfaces requires you to use your keyboard to navigate, like if there are no mouses which add to the push button feel of the 70s.

I was worried that the alien's "AI" would fail and break the game, but I'm glad to have been proven wrong. Not at any time did I see the alien glitch out or do something stupid. It really is a ruthless killer that requires your respect. The same goes for the humans and the androids. The humans work together as teams and if they are hostile you better avoid them or distract them to get to where you need to go. The androids are lethal if they catch you, they can't run but they do walk steadily towards you like a terminator.

Conclusion: While it does borrow a lot from other games in the terms of gameplay mechanics, this survival horror game combines old school gameplay with an extremely impressive, dynamic enemy, incredible visual and sound design and a thrilling story in full blown Alien spirit. It's a truly unique experience. If you are a fan, don't miss out on Amanda Ripley's struggle for survival and quest to find the truth..

There is no hand-holding, you have a map with markers, but a lot of times you have to think to find your way (it's intentional and well done though). To stand a chance at survival, you will have to use every bit of what you learn throughout the game and think outside the box more often than not. The story here is well written, and I found myself fully immersed in the claustrophobic environment Alien: Isolation provides.

The visuals are well done (even if it appears every character is sweating in the same places on their faces the whole time), and the core mechanics of the game are easy to comprehend and intuitive. For me personally, the game's sound is what makes this title shine. I absolutely recommend playing with headphones if you have a decent pair because within the first half an hour to an hour, I found myself jumping at things that I probably wouldn't have otherwise and the timing of the sound effects and minimalist music is almost flawlessly weaved together in a way that proves most unsettling. The lighting is also executed in a manner that causes heart pounding moments that are again woven in with well timed sound effects and musical pieces.

Once the Alien (and other threats) make its / their presence known, this game really takes off, as does your heart rate. It is not for the faint of heart. I also recommend playing the game at its hardest difficulty right from the start because it really does become that much more terrifying, and I've always believed that if you play at the hardest setting from the beginning, there is nothing to compare it to and you will find ways to adapt. The game takes cues from other games such as Amnesia and Outlast in the "hiding" mechanic, but it works even better than those games for the most part. I also got Bioshock vibes from the station as I'd compare it to Rapture in terms of how the ship itself feels.

The only thing preventing this game from earning a perfect score, oddly for me at least, echoes something I've read elsewhere and that is it is a tad too long. Towards the end of your time on this ship that makes the Ishamura look like a space paradise, the scares do tend to become less intense because you've dealt with them for so long. However, the varied enemies (of which there are more than a handful) does keep it somewhat fresh up until that point. Had they shaved about an hour or so off of the entire thing, it would have been perfect. Having said that, it's a small complaint to say the game is too much of a good thing because even then, it's not like I felt as though the game wore out its welcome. The scares just weren't as panic inducing as they were earlier and perhaps that's a good thing anyway because there are plenty to be had.

Running and gunning is not the primary object of this game. Doing either of those things can and will cause you to start over from your last save point. Dying in this game happens often, but it never felt frustrating for me. The bottom line here though is this is the Aliens game fans have been waiting for. I never was a true fan of the films, but that's a testament to how good this game truly is. If you enjoy the series, survival horror, space related games, or even stealth games, then this should be on your list of must have titles for this year. With DLC, multiple play styles and modes to keep things truly fresh, the game does indeed have tremendous replay value as well. For me, the whole experience was incredible and "Isolation" is a truly fitting title and I hope its success allows them to give fans more in the future.

This game offers fantastic environments, I mean talk about experiencing the movie franchise we have enjoyed for so many years in a whole new, immersive way. It’s the polished, well executed graphics and character movements that really bring this game to life. One can tell that a lot of effort was put into cooking this visually stunning smorgasbord to the player.
But does it really matter how much energy was exerted in bringing a visually engaging game to the player if the players avatar lacks some basic human capabilities. If I cannot scale a couch in order to traverse from one part of the room to another than this entire beautiful virtual reality becomes a real life frustration. Ok, so I can't jump... but what about all of those useless little items that are scattered throughout. That box on the floor, the cute little monkey wrench, the coffee cup on the counter, why can I not lift these things? Why is the cup on the counter if I cannot throw it onto the floor? What is the purpose of these freely moving items that seem to all have physics when I run into them, but I cannot be interacted with using my hands.
OK, so I can't pick up useless junk... how about emptying my hands. I have been holding this med-pack for an hour, why can't I place it back into my pocket? Let me 'holster' stuff.
Look, the game is gorgeous, no doubt about that, the game-play even feels good, but immersion suffers from some goofy things your character just can't do.
Sorry guys but you have to be able to jump. If you design a level and then figure out that jumping from point A to point B circumvents some gameplay triggers then you should redesign the level or put up some invisible walls... idk if less of two evils is removing ability to jump... arg why does not jumping bother me so much? I'm not a very active person in rl so... well the character is a young woman, she looks fit. I just think she should be able to lift things like coffee mugs, or scale over a couch. What's the point of these amazing environments and graphics if the basic human movement is unrealistic?
    So 7 it is.

And then when it finally comes, it's like " Oh boy we're in for it now" The game's atmosphere is fantastic Creative Assembly did a really great job in creating the environment. Truely a faithful recreation of the Aliens Universe. This isn't trying to be a shooter, this is about survival, evading the alien, and the occasional working Joes and other humans as well. Some people might be expecting an action shooter when even when it was announced they clearly stated its a survival horror game and not a shooter. So please don't down rate the game simply because it's not Call of Duty. I'm glad Creative did a fantastic job with the game. This is defiantly not Aliens Colonial Marines. This game does have its glitches here and there. but I haven't seen anything too major. Outside of that there's only a few minor complaints about it the game is not completely perfect, But the positives outweigh the negatives. Expand

The story is utterly compelling primarily being based off the original Alien but also taking cues from Aliens, Alien 3 and the more recent Prometheus. You genuinely feel like you have entered this universe, which is a testtment to the writer Dan Abnett.

The gameplay is ferociously difficult (I'll be honest, I had to switch down from Medium to Easy), but you do become better as you play. It is also varied, you will go through some utterly spine chilling moments against the alien, but then are giving space to breathe with some pauses with humans or simply puzzles to resolve. At its best this game is the scariest thing I've ever played.

Before buying I was nervous from the negative IGN review about level re-use and backtracking, but this is a complete red herring. You do re-visit some areas but the environment has changed and you can access different areas. How this can be seen as a negative is utterly beyond me. The levels you play are all incredibly rich and varied, not once did I feel fed up of returning to an area. Even in classics such as System Shock 2 it was sometimes tedious to go back, not here.

Visually its spectacular and performed well on my Radeon 7850 at ultra settings. It is hard to explain without actually playing it how effectlvely they capture the Alien universe. For me this has raised the visual standard for other games. The lighting is particularly impressive.

Alien fans will usually look back to AvP1 and AvP2 on the PC as being the high water mark for games, this is finally a worthy successor to these games.

This has to be one of the most pleasant surprises in gaming in the past few years. I'll start by saying I'm NOT a fan of horror games. But I truly enjoyed this game.

    The positives:

    1. The Engine. Nobody seems to mention this. The engine is amazing, I don't know what it is, but the graphics are amazing while maxed with high FPS on my 680. Compared to Shadow of Mordor that just came out, which looks noticeably worse but with a bad FPS. Alien: Isolation has excellent graphics AND an excellent engine.

    2. The gameplay. This is a STEALTH GAME. If that turns you off, then you won't enjoy Alien: Isolation. The character is NOT a gung ho violent person. It says it a million times in loading screen tips. You aren't meant to be violent, and are actively punished for it. This is reflected in the fact it takes her ages to aim the revolver, and still has crap aim with it after you let it aim. There are also consequences I won't mention for firing your weapons. They're best viewed as tools, but only equally useful as your other tools. The entire game plays sort of like a Deus Ex Human Revolution stealth sequence, but with huge penalties for getting caught. If that doesn't sound appealing, then this game isn't your cup of tea.

    3. The Atmosphere. Holy. Crap. The lighting, the props, the sound, the pacing, all come together to create an adrenaline pumping experience that'll leave you feeling energized, if you let yourself become immersed. This game is meant to be played in long sessions without distractions. When you get through a particularly harrowing sequence, the relief and satisfaction is real. The props themselves deserve huge amounts of credit. You can tell that the artists worked relentlessly to bring us Alien as it was originally imagined. Each prop oozes with style, and you can tell they're all labors of love. The textures are so perfect, it feels like you can reach out and touch the cheap 70s era yellow stained plastic. The computer/device monitors you encounter are all a joy to look at and interact with. And the sound. With Jeff Van Dyk on board it's to be expected, but this game has some of the best music and sound design I've heard in a long time. Major props to those guys. There are so many OH **** moments that occur, and when in retrospect you realize they weren't even scripted, you go OH **** again. Unlike other horror games with scripted events around every corner, many of the things that make you jump or terrified are NOT scripted and are completely organic. Whoever was behind the design in this game deserves a medal. It's a true cinematic experience. This is innovation, folks. We can only hope other games copy this dynamic style of storytelling.

    4. It's HARD! Which is refreshing considering most games today hold your hand. You're going to die a lot in this game. Sometimes it feels cheap when you die, but with patience I was able to plan out and get through every sequence. Sometimes I got stuck in places due to the objective not being in a clear cut location, but I don't think having to explore is necessarily a con. Like I said, this game does NOT hold your hand. It gives you a few tools you need to survive, and leaves it up to you to figure out how to manipulate and exploit the world and tools. That discovery of all the new ways you can get through places is a true joy.

    Time for the negatives.

    1. Lack of anti aliasing and options. I spent a good half hour setting up the graphics of this game through my videocard. The lack of anti aliasing and field of view beyond 74 is really annoying. In fact, I find it outright ridiculous that the game defaults to 47~ FOV. That's downright unacceptable. When you crank it up to 74 however, it is acceptable. I just wish it went to 90.

    2. Frustrating segments. Like I said, this game is HARD and can get pretty god damn frustrating when you lose your patience. With adrenaline flowing it's sometimes hard to sit back and examine a situation and go through it methodically. I can't really knock the game for this too much though, because I personally enjoy hard games and overcoming obstacles. If you don't like hard, then be weary. Think of it like Dark Souls. It's about that level of unforgiving, except you get a lot more save points.

    3. Voice acting is a but crappy sometimes, but most of the time you don't notice it. The only time it was cringe worthy was around the beginning. I wish they got a better actor for Ripley.

    Conclusion:

If you enjoy hard games, this game is for you. If you are easily immersed in games and love getting sucked into a game world, this is for you. If you enjoy stealth games, this is for you. Especially if you love the Alien franchise.

If you're a gung ho cowadoody player, like that idiot IGN reviewer who gave this a 5.9, and black ops a 9, then this game isn't for you. If you're impatient, or want something light and mindless, then this game isn't for you.

Happy hunting, and damn I hope games of this quality continue to be released

Walking around the ship in the beginning I felt like I was literally in the Ridley Scott film and I was very impressed with the detail of ambiance put into the game.

Additionally, my highest recommendation is to play this with headphones on turned up to an intimidating level. The booms and thuds of traversing through the environments will awaken your instinctual senses like it was created to do.

The sound design is superior, the environments are surreal and I was very impressed with the AI in this game. I admit they are not perfect (a few times I was crouched in plain sight with no response); however, I was very impressed that the AI never followed a set pattern and was very unpredictable. A few times after dying I would reload my last save and the AI was not only doing different things; they would sometimes arrive from different directions and rooms than previous. Having the AI open a door right before I was about to walk through is exhilarating when I was able to spontaneously hide and get away with being detected.

Just like every game, it also has its flaws. A few times the in-game dialogue did not match up with the character speaking, not just a little, the mouth would be closed when dialogue was being said. At times they looked like E.T. trying to say "I'll be right here." Additionally, there were times that I wanted to pick up a weapon an enemy AI was using against me and I was unable to. I assume I can later in the game; but, at the moment it doesn't make any sense that Amanda would take their ammo and not their weapon.

Overall, it is a very solid game. If you are looking for a true AAA game for next-gen this is it. There are a lot of good looking games; but, this one seems to be the defining moment that indicates we are in the next-gen era. The graphics, sound, AI, voice-acting (including Sigourney Weaver), and overall ambiance of the game is truly breath-taking (you will literally hold your own breath under pressure).

    Go play!

-Graphics are nice, gameplay is smooth, no noticable technical faults so far. (However I have heard others have had issues, I suggest checking the forums before and after purchase if you experience any)

    Cons
-Game can be frustrating, enemies might block a door and decide to just not leave, Alien might find you despite you not really doing anything to really put yourself in that situation, just because of bad luck. Another example is sometimes the Alien is magic and literally in two different spots at once, like you see him drooling and look at another vent and he is drooling from that one too, and if you go under either he spawns there and kills you.
-AI sometimes will be a derp. Usually it's really good, and if it hears you or such it will come running, it cuts you off, etc, but every once in a while it will just like look directly at you 3 feet away and just miss you. This is rare, but it really breaks immersion when the AI does things like this.
-Lack of features to take advantage of next gen hardware/PCs, while it looks great as is, it pretty much looks the exact same across everything.

Issues I hear but so far don't agree with
-Save points? I was heard they were terrible, they are actaully really good, not too numerous and not too rare. If you pay attention you rarely lose much if any progress. They skip save points and complain when they get set back.
-Tedious gameplay due to it being stretched out?.The game actually seems to be the perfect length, it has not gotten tedious to me and I am more than half way through now. Plus I can do the short missions and DLC afterwards which is a perfect length.

    8/10

Play it on hard difficulty, thats how its meant to be. The visuals, while not on the technical level of Crysis 3 or Metro Redux, are really beautiful, creating a fantastic atmosphere.

About the mixed reviews I can only say that I take it the negative reviews are people that were trying to rush through it and couldn't deal with the unpredictable AI or simply the fact this is not a generic CoD shooter game. As an Alien fan, this is a must buy, you must experience this game's environment and meet the xenomorph it portrays, even if only for a short while.

This is the sort of game we as gamers have been missing out on between all the nickel-and-dime AAA carbon copies and half-done indie games, this is how games should be. The actual gameplay is basic survival horror, turn this on so that this opens, so you can go turn this on. This game however is not about the gameplay. Comparing this to a haunted house is a better frame of reference then comparing it to Resident Evil 4 or Dead Space. This game is about enviroment, tone, and atmosphere. I have personally enjoyed it and appreciate what the developers have put into it. The game experience it delivers is unique and truly does capture the "Feel" of the orginal film. I really want to emphasize the word "feel". There are games more terrorfying out. The 20 minute silent hill demo was creepy as hell. Alien: Isolation delivers a unique "feel" of terror. Moments like calling a transit and waiting in a corner somewhere, hiding, looking back and forth for the Alien to pop out are awesome. Ok, let's put it straight. Alien Isolation IS an aesthetically nice game. Nice graphics, lots of atmosphere, made in the true spirit of the movie it draws inspiration from.

BUT... it's just a long, boring, sluggish, pedantic exercise in stealth movement and "trial and error" approach. It's DAMN HARD! While the Alien AI is as rigid as a plank (it's totally scripted), it takes MANY tries to overcome a single section.

And, above all, you have to walk, and walk, and walk, through a neverending obscurity, along winding tunnels, winding paths, winding corridors that takes you to another corridor, another path, another door, with NOTHING that happens in between.

You can actually spend hours (I mean it!) under a table, or in closet, just to be instantly killed and have to start it again from the last save point. And, yes, the poor saving system doesn't help to get out from this quagmire of frustration. FRUSTRATION and STRESS at its best.
To the point that, at a certain moment, while you are playing, it's impossibile not to ask to yourself what's the point of all this wandering around, opening doors "Zelda style" (once you need crowbar, then you need a decoder, then some sort of lance...), repeating the same section again and again and again until you get it right.

Alien Isolation is a very good simulator of an hell of a life. It simulates very well how stressfull can be being chased by an invulnerable alien, and some other guys you don't have the slightest chance to overcome in combat. As such simulator, the game is tense. But one should accept this level of frustration and stress ONLY if he were actually try to escape from an Alien unbeatable creture! Got my point?
A lot (a lot!) of wasted potential

Alien Isolation can be frustratingly difficult at times, but nevertheless it’s easily the best game in the Alien franchise since the original Aliens vs Predator. The fact that the game mimics perfectly the 1970s look and sci fi stylings of Ridley Scott’s Alien film makes the experience even more endearing. By featuring absurd number of “surprise” twists, Alien Isolation’s final act could’ve used some trimming. [Nov 2014]
