This is the best game I have played in a long time, You truly feel like you are being hunted. The game looks amazing and sounds great and the atmosphere just sucks you right into the game.

As so many before me has already stated, this game looks and sounds absolutely amazing. I have never been as immersed in a game as in this one. I have never been as immersed in a game as in this one. There aren't many real flaws I can think of, and I didn't really have any real problems with the save-stations that a lot of the negativity seems to come back to. Sure, there were times that I lost quite some progress, but then you realize that you hadn't really gotten that far anyway, you had just been hiding in a locker for ten minutes, being too scared to even move, and now when you know where to go, things go a lot smoother. Besides, the longer you go without a save-station, the more you want to keep alive, making the game even more stressful and thrilling. I never felt the game was unfair at any point. I have always liked the Alien-movies (especially the first two of course), but this game sparked my interest and love for the franchise.

The only reason the game doesn't get a 10 from me is that some parts of the game has too many backtrack-moments. Not necessarily that you end up visiting places several times throughout the game, but more to the fact that there constantly is something you have to fix to continue progressing. Having to go back towards the start of the level, just to start some generator, then go back again, and so forth, can be a bit frustrating. I also wish there were more friendly (or non-hostile at least) humans on-board the station. Towards the end of the game, you also end up in a bit too many situations that feel very scripted and "video-game-typical"-like, dodging trains, falling elevators, aliens and facehuggers, while everything is burning and so forth. I know this is the climax of the game, but it could have been a bit more subtle, and as it is now it's on the edge of being over the top.

All in all though, this game is amazing, and gives you a fantastic experience. You won't have fun all the time, but chances are you will constantly be scared (absolutely terrified at some points even). I was at least. If you claim you weren't, you are probably playing it wrong or in the wrong setting :>

If you're a fan of the Alien series this is a must have! Survival horror is different from other games. If you're looking for a challenge, you have it! If you like to play FPS games Rambo- style this game is not for you. I think this game deserves a 10 over some other games.

This game is not perfect, but it really, really brushes up against it. In some areas, it can be so frustrating that it makes you want to eat your own keyboard, the game is a touch long, and the tension really needs to have a little more juxtaposition with relaxed, safe spots to explore.

For the good: the game is scary as hell. Anyone who says it's easy, the alien is easily outsmarted, etc. is lying and just trying to be an obnoxious contrarian. Anyone who says the alien on two feet isn't immersive is also wrong. The alien is smart, it's omniscience as a constant threat from above or below even when it's not on the same floor creates a wonderful atmosphere, and it can be tricked into eating your fellow man when needed, or you can just sprint by the other suckers and the alien will just decide on the closer brains to munch. It walks with a sense of security. Sure, it makes sense for it to be sneaky when it wants to be, but that's precisely what it has, absolute control. It doesn't NEED to sneak around munching heads because it's an apex predator. It moves with purpose and is absolutely unnerving to watch thump along, not giving a damn about anything around it, held against slithering, meaningful motions when it's stalking someone. It's not full of jump scares and grotesquery like dead space (a game I do like), it's got this feeling of oppression weighing down on you, not knowing what action or sound is going to bring the xenomorph out.

The crafting is worked well into the game, giving you multiple options without overloading you with a bunch of items. This works out into giving you a resource pool with multiple outlets and letting you choose what you want to do with it, instead of giving you items themselves, forcing you to follow a certain method. This builds on the almost roguelike-nature of the gameplay.

There are only two bad points that REALLY slam the game down at times.

Firstly, the alien's AI is off at times. If it does decide to show up, and you happen to be in one of the hallway-type areas, you're going to be in for an obnoxious time. The alien doesn't patrol hallways well enough, it always sticks within a certain distance of you and never seems to pop back up into the vents. This leads to scenarios where you're hiding in a cupboard with your motion tracker up, and as the alien walks away, as soon as you hear it disappearing, you pop out only to see it having turned around and looking right out at your big stupid face. The best way to deal with it in hallway scenarios is to just nail the bugger with a molotov and make him piss off back to the vents for a few seconds.

Secondly, the save system is obnoxious as hell. It's a neat little idea, but the problem with no quicksaves is that it punishes exploration in areas where there aren't many save points. I had a recurring problem where I'd run out into a big new area and 5-10 minutes of exploring, sneaking past the alien, distracting him into enemies and watching with glee as he chomped their brains out, only to just get killed before finding the save station and having to redo the whole thing over. So the best method for the game is to just sprint from save point until you find the next save point, tanking deaths, until you know where it is, and THEN do a sneaky stealth attempt where you try to be clever. it's inorganic and retarded. Quicksaving would really solve all of the problems with the alien's occasionally dodgy AI and arbitrary punishment of time.

Overall, I'd give the game an 8.5 (rounding up to 9.) the two flaws and lack of easing off the tension knob (the game really turns it up to 11, breaks off the knob and then sets it on fire. I don't count it as a negative because it's really just a personal thing) lead to me getting just exhausted while playing after a few hours, instead of hitting the sweet spot of keeping me in the zone nonstop. I had fun with it, it's VERY replayable, even if you know the plot, the game will never play the same way twice, and you'll get more than your money's worth if you're a fan of horror or alien. It's definitely the best sci-fi horror game out there (and system shock doesn't count because you can fight back) so definitely give it a look.

Alien Isolation, is absolutely amazing, it's stunning atmosphere and faithfulness is at it's finest. The unpredicable Alien which suits the game very well, kept frustration at bay and tension at the front door. The game isn't perfect ( Some annoying android sections; Backtracking) but it's what I've been craving from an Alien game. If you have the patience and courage, much love will be found.

An absolutely stunning game, visually and sound-wise. AI also features fantastic gameplay which is as different as it gets with the emphasis on being hunted (by some terrifying AI) rather than being the hunter. Unlike some players I found the length ideal... top game of 2014 IMHO :)

A truly remarkable achievement by an unexpected development team (Creative Assembly).

Sevastopol itself is highly immersive, and is brimming with detail and excellent environmental storytelling. Atmosphere is top notch, especially if you're a fan of the film. There are SOOOO many details that would make Alien fans giddy inside. The main antagonist the Alien, is very well done.

The main antagonist the Alien, is very well done. He/she/it/whatever instantly became one of the most respectable and feared opponents I've ever encountered from a video game. It's extremely intimidating, and a large part of that intimidation factor comes from its sound design, especially the loud thumping footsteps it makes as it moves. It's also highly unpredictable, so you can never truly feel safe, even if the Alien leaves the room. Every encounter with it is frightening, tension-filled, and just brilliant.

The other enemy you will encounter often on the ship is the android working joes. I've heard a lot of people complain about them stealing air-time away from the Alien, but I have no complaints. Evey encounter with the Alien takes A LOT out of you. The Working Joes are there so you can get a breather. It also helps that they fit well into the storyline, setting, and atmosphere. Just like the Alien, they have a brilliant sound design, and can also be quite intimidating and scary. It's also immensely satisfying to beat them up. Largely thanks to some excellent animations, and some really solid-feeling weapons. There are also a few encounters when you have to deal with Working Joes and the Alien. This is extra challenging, because any sound you make will attract the Alien to your position.

The animations in this game are BRILLIANT. Every action you do, the game has an animation for it. This may seem small, but it really adds to immersion.

The story itself was good enough. It did its job at gelling the game play sequences together and it did it well. The story was quite straightforward, and that's fine. It didn't need to be some crazy mastermind plot. I was content with it and didn't expect anything more. Only problem was the ending. Definite sequel bate, and just a slap in the face. I won't get into more.

Overall, Alien Isolation was the best survival horror game I've ever played. Extremely immersive, tense, terrifying, and at the same time an excellent tribute to the film.

How scary is Alien Isolation? I've never been more scared in my life! I've played horror games but this game truly terrified me. I had feelings of dread in my stomach. This game does not contain atmosphere. That's because it is all enveloping, surrounding you as you are walking or creeping through the Sevastopol Space Station. You most certainly are hoping to all hell that you are not running through that station. I have never been so immersed in a game before. The lighting effects, the smoke and steam effects, the fire effects are all top notch. Best fire effect I've ever seen.

The audio. OMG the Audio! From the background music to the sound of metal bending or being walked upon to the ambient sounds of well everything. I have never experienced such superb use of sounds in a game.

The game developers Creative Assembly have gone to great lengths with this game to make it as immersive as possible. They had to get the graphics and art style top notch and they succeeded. They had to get the sounds perfected and they succeeded. They had to get the gameplay perfect and they succeeded. It's like I am there in the Alien movie.

I'm giving this a 10/10 Game of the Year award. Must buy.

However in warning and after watching this game be played by multiple people I have to let you know that there are two ways of playing this game.

You can either play it as Amanda Ripley where you are on board a space station trying to survive. Or you can play it as a computer gamer sitting behind your monitor in your room with distractions or an attitude of i'll just walk around in the game world la di da and hope the alien doesn't see me but if it does thats too bad i'll just reload and walk again hoping it doesn't see me because i'm not in the game and i just want to finish this game to go play CoD...

It's quite easy to be Amanda Ripley. The atmosphere is there. The graphics are there. The gameplay is there. The sounds are there. You will get the most enjoyment out of it as Amanda Ripley.

Survival horror, except in first person view...which is great! This game isn't meant for plowing through enemies with amazing aim...and unlimited rounds. It's hide and seek, as was the movie.

I have been really hyped about the Alien and the "scariness", but to be perfectly honest - been playing on my own in midnight, and I was actually looking forward to meet alien and than been little bit dissapointed about it. Alien is randomly spawning around, and therefor many times it is completely unlogical and impossible.

I really feel that design of Nostromo is perfect, graphics, sound and atmosphere of this game is well optimized and looking really good. I even watched Alien straight after game and the job done in movie and in game is amazing - like a twins. Well done guys!

Game design and AI (understand the core gameplay) is on the other side weeker point in this game. And lowers the general result really high. It´s simply feel like Call of Duty, without enemies, weapons, and rambo style - which is cool and I am happy about it.. Though, what else is in this game left than? Minigames are repetitive. Hiding - understand crouching and Alien which sometimes see you where no-one else could and overlooked you in situation where half-blinded person with 2 promiles would see you just prooves one thing - AI is the weakest link in this game. If Alien was more "intelligent" it could be much more interesting and build on this would be much more easier. First Half-life for example had an amazing AI. Where army guys were talking to each other and seeking tactically thru the enviroment - that was something amazing at that time - and that is something I would really love to see in this Alien game.

My result to this game is 7/10:

10/10 for perfect graphics, sound and atmosphere
    4,5/10 for gamedesign and ai

My final thought is - check it out later, when price is little bit lower - but you should not miss it completely.

My only criticism is that I was very misled by the difficulty descriptions. They pretty much state that hard mode is the way it was meant to be played. Really it just breaks the immersion due to how often you'll die over and over. It's almost as if the Alien has inserted a radio-beacon probe straight up Ripley's ass leading to sometimes just absurd instances of the Alien magically coming across the map to the most random locker in the most secure room you could find just to face rape you 10 times over unless you just say screw it and run for the exit.

    Otherwise... fun =)

Darken the room and put on your headphones, enable surround sound, turn down the game music to 10%, this game delivers great atmosphere and some very tense moments. If you want fast paced action with guns blazing, dont bother.. I found myself low on ammo far from a save point hiding under a table for 10 minutes just waiting for the alien to make a noise so I can continue on. Moving slowly from one table to another, listening to every knock and thump, slowly peering around corners, looking back every few seconds, it can get very tense sometimes. Once you have the flame thrower you can be a bit more careless. A short burst will scare it away.
You really need to strategize your next move in the alien missions. The androids also provide some decent suspense in some areas, but you can easily outrun them.

The missions are well designed, but you do need to track back and forth a fair bit in some missions. Having to search for power generators and power them up all the time can get a bit repetitive, and looking for the exit point and keycards can get a bit tiresome, but it's not too excessive like in some other games (Doom 3 comes to mind).
This game is longer than your average game but I never got bored thanks to the atmosphere, storyline, and the mix of non-alien missions.

Graphics, sound, gameplay are all brilliant, lighting is excellent. However the inventory system and monitor interfaces could be improved. Took me ages to work out how to use a medkit (press Q, hover over medkit, release Q, hold R). Guns don't reload automatically when you run out of bullets so you need to check your ammo at all times.
The maps and direction indicator could be improved, I was totally lost a few times since the direction indicator sometimes disappears and the destination point on the map was on another level.

Negatives aside, the game is very polished and well made. It only crashed once in one of the later levels. Alt-Tab works.
The Alien AI is very well done, probably the best AI I've ever seen in a game. It didn't feel scripted at all. Human and Android AI could probably be improved, but scripted androids was useful when timing sneaks past them.

Easily the best alien game ever, probably the best suspense game of all time.
    Highly Recommended!

Headphones or a good AV set, lights off and prepare your heart for the tension.

The audio in this game is on par with it's lighting. Little sounds, the echoes, the music, the anxiety it causes are exactly like in the first Alien movie. The Alien itself is very accurate. He is a hunter, not a prey. He is smart, superior, stronger and faster than you and your only effective option is to avoid it.

I love the game. If you like survival/horror and stealth games, this is your game and you deserve to play on Hard so you can suffer and die a lot and still feel honored to be killed by the Alien. If you don't like survival/horror but still like Alien, this is your game too, just go with Easy or Normal and you will enjoy a very well crafted game made for Alien fans.

For me this game was a 50/50, there was a lot I liked about the game, but also a lot I disliked. Firstly, the atmosphere is amazing. Quite a few times I jumped like a little girl when the alien found me and there are plenty of jump-scares throughout. I also like the fluidity of animation and the real emphasis on stealth and movement tactics. I often found myself pausing to think about my next move and the game does a nice job of guiding you, but not making it too linear. Lastly, the game also follows the story very well and those who have seen the films will feel the nostalgia.

In terms of the game's negatives, for me the biggest one was story length. The game took me 17 hours to complete and felt (surprisingly) too long. I feel like the developers have tried too hard to extend the game length by adding in more and more and more and more inconveniences forcing you to do missions which seems pointless. For example, you'd be told to open a door, only to find the door has no power. The game will then send you back the entire route you've just travelled to activate the power. Upon returning to the door, you require a keycard or pin code... everything in the game was like this. It was just fetch mission after fetch mission, and something would ironically always go wrong the moment you got close to completing an objective.

The alien also gets extremely annoying. At first I was scared of it, but after 7 hours or so I was just fed up of it. I was constantly having to stop and just wait for the alien to walk around the scripted route it was given before it went back into the vents, making it safe to move. I also find it silly how the alien follows you EVERYWHERE, despite going up and down elevators, across rail networks and keeping almost silent compared to other noises on the ship. Of course I understand the point of the game is to hide from it, but the realism of it just following YOU everywhere is frustrating.

Overall the game is worth the buy if you've got 15-20 hours spare, but personally I think the game is far too stretched, it would have been ideal to me as a ~12 hour game instead.

I don't think the high ratings here are in any way justified. The game doesn't offer many mechanics to play with: Not even a hand full ! Throughout more than the first half of the game you won't even need anything else than sneaking. That makes gathering materials optional along with crafting and using items.

Yeah - the game gets better towards the end but why does more than the first

Throughout more than the first half of the game you won't even need anything else than sneaking. That makes gathering materials optional along with crafting and using items.

Yeah - the game gets better towards the end but why does more than the first half have to be so lame: You either run around or sneak around and that's it. Another thing I noticed is that some of the other characters' animations look clunky - like action figures. Not a big deal but because that happens mostly during the lame first and a bit half of the game it just adds to the misery of a bad first impression.

The levels repeat a lot as you'll get tools / progress to unlock doors later and have to re-visit places a lot. You'll also enter new areas as the game progresses. Because you're on a space station everything always looks the same. All these points are neither good nor bad in my opinion. But I feel like it's important to state this. An effort was made to have the different station parts look a little different and like what they were used for.

The story is ever present and becomes better towards the end as things finally begin to come into motion. One thing I didn't like about the game's design around the story was the "Next objective: Do **** !" quest-like design. I'm the player: Either allow me to figure out what to do or leave some clues / hints but don't you dare to order me around in a survival game !

Because of the linear story, linear progression, linear objectives etc. the game's replay value is very low - unless you like running / sneaking around. Also the game's divided into safe zones and danger zones depending on where you are so that you can either run around with nothing to worry about or have to walk / sneak / hide. Later thankfully everything becomes a danger zone so that there's finally some survival involved... and then we get the flame thrower which screws it all again.

The Alien is also a factor:
    http://aliens.wikia.com/wiki/Xenomorph

Electro-reception and pheromones would be two additional ways how an Alien could sense it's prey. The Alien in this game is pretty blind when it comes to hiding in the shadows but seems to have good ears - even though it has none. That and it will also *stomp* *stomp* *stomp* while moving. I guess that were all choices made in favor of making the concept of sneaking around work. Don't expect a clever Alien that'll wait for you, hidden at a key point. Instead it'll stomp around in the open. One exception to that is when it'll actually wait in a vent above the player, easily spotted and heard by the slime dripping from there.

The ending of the game also disappoints as it's a complete cliff hanger.

I don't think that any rating above 40% would be justified for this game. The game offers a far too powerful sneaking / hide in the shadows and silly lockers etc. method and else offers little to no mechanics to make things interesting. The Alien is on god mode which is another way to make this game work. All in all I'm disappointed.

Watch gameplay videos to get an impression of the game first. I think it's over-hyped.

It's playable on my PC but it's a rushed release. Wait a few weeks or months until they resolve the many bugs and story issues. Two weeks after release there has been only one update and that was a "day one" update.

    Bugs I have encountered:

    1. Game occasionally/frequently freezes after reloading from last checkpoint (after dying).

    2. A few game device called 'rewire boxes' are supposed to be hackable but some will freeze the player (not the game) if you attempt to hack them (requiring game restart).

    3. Doors that are needed to continue the story, that should be open, are locked tight. This is interesting. On the AI site people are experiencing this at random places and, as it turns out, are sometimes a result of player error (player failed to hack a terminal, rewire box, press a switch or whatever). However at least one is the result of the developers' failure. The objective indicator shows two different paths to reach the objective yet one path leads to a locked door that will only open if the other path was taken with no game message/cue/explanation offered at the locked door. It looks like a bug. If one looks at youtube walkthroughs it would appear that the door should be open by default and one is left scratching one's head. Its a story logic issue. So I spent an hour in-game trying to figure out what I did wrong, then spent a half-hour watching youtube videos and came away empty without a solution. It wasn't until my second playthrough that I payed close attention and came to understand that the objective indicator was faulty, was the source of the problem. I have a hunch that many of the bugs are really similar 'gameplay' story problems.

These are the bugs I have experienced but there are myriad more on the AI web. The bugs seem to be random.

It's a little irresponsible to not have fixed one bug over 13 days since release. The AI website is a POS, too. I was trying to help by posting my bug experiences and solutions but today the 'login' link is broken (on both IE and FF) so i say ef it. It's playable on my PC but check the AI website for an indication of the scope and randomness or the bug.

In space, no one can hear you scream at the repetition.

Well, talk about a MASSIVE disappointment.

The first third of the game is superb, the middle section is mediocre, and the last third is terrible. This is a 6-8 hour game with, literally, 10 hours of completely superfluous padding that does absolutely nothing except serve as a major source of deja vu and frustration with the lack of imagination demonstrated by the developers.

You won't believe how many times you have to go back and restart a generator or something similarly uninteresting - because the game has no more tricks up its sleeve after the first handful of hours. It's the way they try to create tension and it works in the beginning.

But as the game progresses, you adjust to the Alien and it's no longer as scary as it is at first. This means that every implausible accident causing a delay becomes ever more about despising the process and ever less about appreciating the tension.

The exploration is mostly linear or deceptively non-linear at places, and you find very little of interest. The audio logs are there just because that's what these games have in them, and not because the developers had something interesting to say.

Same goes for the crafting system, which is perhaps the least interesting crafting system I can recall. I didn't use half the things I could craft - because the game gives you very few opportunities or reasons not to use the much faster and more efficient approach of your normal weapons.

Clearly, the game was NOT developed by people who understood the games they were inspired by. System Shock 2, for instance, has more interesting choices in the first hour of the first level than the entirety of Isolation. That's no exaggeration.

It's very unfortunate, because the game CAN be a masterpiece. The atmosphere and level of immersion is perhaps the best I've ever experienced in a game. It's just that good. The sound design is also on a level that's hard to recall in any other AAA game. The sound is so good that it ends up being your primary tool, because you NEED to know where your enemy is at all times - and your motion tracker, as useful as it is, is not as efficient as your ears. Just make absolutely sure you're playing with surround sound!

The level design is fantastic when it comes to recreating the Alien film - but it's also lacking in originality for the same reason.

To me, the game feels like the developers wanted to have sex with the Alien movie, but since they couldn't quite have that - they chose to make this game instead.

What I mean by that is that they bring almost NOTHING of their own to the table in terms of story or imagination. It's like they're idolizing the film to such an extent that they consider any deviation sacrilegious.

Such a slave-like disposition is not how you create strong art. You have to use your own vision, and they should have let the movie serve as inspiration - not a rigid blueprint.

To make my point clear, I have to say that Aliens: Colonial Marines had more original material than this game does, and as terrible as that game was, at least it tried to expand a little upon the familiar stories.

Isolation does NOTHING without it having been part of the source material, and everything you see can be traced back DIRECTLY to Scott's film.

Maybe a lot of the fans just want to exist in that environment, and nothing more. That's cool - but I was never really into seeing the same things over and over.

After I got used to the strong sense of place and ambience, I started hungering for something interesting to happen in the story - and nothing ever really did. It doesn't help matters when the game gives you more "endings" than you can count, and each of them more ridiculously drawn out than the next.

Near the end of the game, it becomes a big "experience-fest" - like you'd recognise from the worst AAA titles - with explosions going off everywhere you go and constant little QTE triggers that you have to do.

It's like they had too much money and they felt like throwing in a pointless and trivial action movie at the last minute.

Oh well. It started on such an unbelievably high note - and I've never been that scared of a computer game in my entire life. I guess there was no way it could sustain that throughout - but I must say I couldn't have imagined the negative direction the game starts taking around halfway into it.

The ONLY reason this game doesn't get a lower score from me, is because it did something no other game has done in terms of atmosphere and immersion. During the first hours of the game, I was THERE. In that place. No barrier.

That's too rare for me to ignore, and so it gets a higher score than it might deserve.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When I started Alien: Isolation, I noticed the painstaking detail of the Torrens spacecraft which truly does look like it comes straight out of Ridley Scott's Alien. The voice acting was good, the sounds are amazing and stay true to the film, and the graphics and visuals are absolutely stunning. The second the Torrens spacecraft arrives to Sevastopol Station (where you will spend most of the game in), something doesn't seem right. The ship looks damaged and there is someone trying to contact you for help. You then find yourself on the station alone, and then you start to get scared. I thought the Alien was going to kill me the second I stepped in the ship. And this is where we get to the A.I. that the Alien has. The A.I. of the Alien is very good although it may sometimes bug out but most of the time you cannot predict which way the Alien will go and that is what makes the Alien truly terrifying. But the Alien is not the only threat on the ship. The other threats are people and synthetic androids called "Working Joes." As soon as I saw these things chills ran down my spine because I remember how Ash relentlessly attacked Ellen Ripley in the 1979 Alien. And when they do attack they are a chore to kill. It takes several headshots with a gun to kill one of them and many, many hits with a crowbar to kill. But when you get more advanced weapons like the bolt gun, they are easier to kill. But if they outnumber you, you are screwed. The bad thing about this game is that the Alien gets "killed" by Amanda Ripley about halfway through the game and the other half is fighting working joes which was a bit dissapointing to me. But, Alien Isolation is a great Alien game that we've all been waiting for. Expand

Game of the Year! Best game based on cinema! First stealth where I was afraid to be found. Awesome surround music. Very good scene mix. A lot of wow effects. Anything bad? Maybe... who cares! Just Best Alience Game!

I have never wrote a review to this site, even for top games like The Last Of Us. I always used Metacritic for user reviews, general scores of games etc.

But honestly this time I had to create an account, willingly, for this masterpiece. I usually dont like horror games like outlast, in which you are usually defenseless.

But this game, has the perfect atmosphere. Games starts on a slow pace, but after the first encounter your adrenaline level goes x100. It is really like being in shoes of Ripley, they achieved this by extremely detailed (polished and well thought enviromental details) enviroment, high quality graphics, SOUND EFFECTS (one of the best I have seen in my 30 years of gaming life), and AI.

Before I played the game I had big doubts about the AI. That is why I tired to play on "HARD" difficulty, I couldnt survive 100 meters of exploring when I reached a section of the game (I dont want to spoil, and wont go into details). Alien is really giving you some serious trouble on HARD. It became so agressive at some point I hid and cried in a cabin like a 12yo girl for 15 mins - jokes aside - in the end it ripped the cabin door first and then killed me brutally :p

I really want a sequel to this game, it is one of the best horror/thriller games I have ever played since Resident Evil 1 and Dead Space 1.

Oh there is one thing bad about the game but it is nit a reason to give it a 9. Antialiasing options on PC is too low, I wish this game would support far higher level AA. It would be a perfect game Alien game.

    10/10 anyway...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am very pleased and thrilled by this game. I am of older Age but still active enough, to get Adrenalin sometimes....The very high challenge, the hairraising Tension and last b.n. least the athmosphere in Alien Isolation provide much of it.
There are some Points which disappoint me: As a beginner, I started the game in medium difficulty and have reached the middle of Mission 6 so far. I must say, the critics concerning the very problematic "save" issue are true: What the h*** playing for 45 minutes or more and to be just wiped out at the end of the Level? The developers could have arranged a save System, which gives a tiny bit more of flexibility. The hardcore, nearly sadistic absolute "survive or die"-System is just frustrating and adds nothing to suspense.
Many other critics have mentioned this fact. This is a GAME (fun), not a test to withstand torture....!
Humans, who are hostile towards me, can freely wander around, Play with their Revolvers and survive!
Only with MY initiative and risk, the "Alien" decides to punish them....? This is not right!
With the rest of the game, I am very satisfied.

But theres nothing that cant be fixed with some patches, dlc`s etc.

Fun for a while. The atmosphere is good, initially capturing the spirit of the 1979 classic movie.
But the game became a chore of trying to avoid the Alien-some times making to the next objective and saving, then more then often getting killed, only having to repeat to try again.
One of those points where it feels more like a job/chore then something fun to do..

The quests seem repetitive and I'm tired of pulling levers and pushing buttons at this point. Sneaking was fun for a while but by the end I've gotten impatient and just don't care anymore. The only thing making me want to sneak isn't for fear of getting caught but just to finish the game in a timely manner. I'm nearly done and at this point I'm just beating it to see the end.

Its good that things works, controls feel nice and haven't really given me trouble. But the story and puzzles make me feel like I'm child, doesn't feel catered toward an older audience despite the graphics and gore. Puzzles are simple timed reflex, match numbers/symbols or align and time. Instead of feeling rewarded for completing them I just feel insulted. They could have had more urgent circumstances to make you feel pressured while doing them but I'm playing on hard and its all too easy. I can't image how much of a walk in park anything below hard must be. Also I see tons of intractable debris like soda cans, gas tanks that fall over and make noise but none of those objects seem to attract or alert enemies. The only thing I think will alert sometimes is the broken glass but I'm still not sure.

Crafting seems a bit odd. Like why do I have to select the individual components? Why can't I just click the make button? Do they want it to be a bit time consuming, is it suppose to make the game harder for me? It doesn't do any of those things so why not just let me click craft. Its annoying having to select each part for no apparent reason. They could have at least made crafting items be alertable so that I'd have to think twice when doing it, maybe add an animation to show me making it. But since it doesn't do any of those things they should have just let be a single button click to make an item.

Ever heard a weird swishing noise when moving around? We'll I'm still not sure what it is but my guess is its the flamethrower. Sometimes it will make it and sometimes it won't. I thought it was dependent on the amount of fluid(ammo) you had for it but that remains inconclusive since even with half a tank it may or may not make the swishing noise. I also thought that that noise would be alterable but it isn't... They could have had it so that when I have it equipped it makes the noise and I'm more easily detected but when I don't it doesn't however it just another useless element.

Then there is the story/plot. Its an alien game so I know its been milked pretty hard by this point and it goes back to the classic moments but despite this the plot is terrible IMO. There are so many repetitive and reused elements its like they didn't put any thought into it. Like Power out there, turn it on, establish coms, didn't work, go turn on power over there instead. Or lets turn AI off, crap no good save me by turning off some power now but this time with a twist, do it in a particular order! lord...

Then there were the space walk simulation parts of the game that just felt like a huge waste of time. I wanted to run to make it go by quicker but I had to sit there holding down the w key waiting for her ass to walk to the objective which guess what.. involved turning on more power and matching more numbers...

Failed on AI and general behavior of the O'Bannon, Scott, Brandywine concept of the alien. If they had hired me to develop the AI it would be the least completed game due to sheer player anxiety of having to contend with a creature that is more unpredictable. The alien would optimize it's survival through silence and stealth which is what every prime predator relies on. It would have certainly used a fuzzy set over all of it's unidentified signals and would have dedicated more time to simply waiting on model optimization constantly reevaluating it's priority locations with each time it receives new information and assigning a best choice based on signals.

Manual doors would account for active analog control, meaning player controls speed of opening and closing ultimately entry to hide providing a balance of security over speed. Shifting to change view angles in hides would also be analog as they currently are but would emit sounds depending on how rapidly player shifts weight.

I would have excluded the involuntarily squelch of the tracker which destroyed the game. The tracker was an obvious stop-gap for an AI model which was under developed for some reason and the tracker was the real nemesis in the game leaving the alien reduced to it's determined and persistent henchman. The tracker would also require batteries just like the flashlight, only both would last longer, certainly the flashlight would considering what year it's supposed to be in the story (you'd think they would have figured out the longer lasting light bulb).

The critical path would have remained focused on the mission which was to understand what happened to the Nostromo and hence Ripley's mother. Instead the flight recorder was discovered surprisingly early in the game and Ripley just seemed to give up on finding the contents in hopes of having it spoon fed to her by a third party. Then again I might be wrong on this and have missed important points in the plot because I had to run through the game thanks to a very poor design decision. Also, considering how much more effective the alien could have been I would have allowed for the player to turn down objectives in lieu of staying focused on investigating the Nostromo event and getting off Sevastopol as quickly as possible.

For me I was more alert and apprehensive up to the point where I had the first encounter with the alien, which again, I understand the designers probably wanted to ease the player into the reality there is an alien, but it only highlighted the fact that the scariest room in the game was also one of the first on Sevastopol. Why? Because I didn't know if the alien would come for me or not, I was expecting it since the docking procedure would certainly have been noisy. Also, firearms should have hurt the alien, only that the alien would bleed and compromise the integrity of the ship rendering the player as good as dead. But I would have preferred no firearms on Sevastopol because any one of the NPCs who were armed could have just as easily shot at it and again, ship has hole, everyone is exposed to conditions of space and die. So they don't shoot at it because they're programmed not to? Breaks immersion. No firearms except perhaps Marlows ship that would have introduced firearms later when necessary to the plot.

Advice: never use tracker and never hide in lockers or cabinets from alien, simple place concealment between you and the alien because it's practically blind and stupid. I literally did circles around a mini zamboni and similar objects to shake the stupid thing. Walk almost everywhere and so long as you aren't making tight circles, it outpaces the alien most of the time. I recommend when first entering a level study the map, make a plan for how to get to your points and move. The designers apparently thought it was more terrifying to be forced to constantly move instead of losing your sanity in a locker over several hours planning your survival. Never use firearms while you know alien is on Sevastopol. Don't use flashlight in ducts, instead use molotov or flamethrower. Don't use devices like noise maker, it only agitates the alien and escalates it's sense of your presence from mere suspicion to certainty.

Other than that I do commend the Creative Assembly folks for giving us what they labored over and I really only experienced one minor defect. As a software engineer myself I know that alone is a testament to how effective the development process was. But it lost it's potential through pinnacle design choices that stifled the games success as a horror game. I really enjoyed the attention to detail, but the set of "Alien" invokes dread because of it's affiliation of the alien character not the reverse despite Cobb and Foss having fabricated a rational explanation for a vessel that complimented the alien.

Sometimes there a good hints where to go on the map and other times you are left wandering around for ages only to have missed a small passage way or item lying somewhere. It should have hints for everything on easy mode because wandering around pointlessly with a annoying Alien chasing you isn't any fun and that's the bulk of this game.
Play it with a trainer, use a guide as soon as you become lost because it's always some stupid little thing you missed that wasn't pointed out on the map and it can take ages to go back looking everywhere.

Overall the game makes great use of the license and introduces a few really great mechanics into the non combat horror game formula, while allowing you light combat options in limited situations.

I did however find the level design and encounter design to be very linear and repetitive. Animation quality isn't great. The small amounts of combat that are in the game feel very poorly put together. The save system can create huge frustrations with infrequent checkpoints placed behind quick time events and story components. This type of game is generally quite short and available for less than full retail, thus with this title coming in at full price it feels extortionately padded out to justify it's price. This in turn reduces the quality of the game considerably and is probably one of it's most noticeable lows with some sections dragging on into an hour or more of walking around. There really isn't any replay value here and the DLC is both short and overpriced.

On the plus side it looks great, highly atmospheric and true to the genres well executed formula.

If you don't already enjoy games like Outlast or Amnesia, you really won't enjoy this one. However if you do enjoy this type of game, Alien Isolation adds a few interesting chemicals into the mix and makes good use of the Alien License. Fortunately too it is a strong PC release with plenty of graphics options, very few bugs and performance is excellent.

Graphics: From a technical stand point the graphics are good. But what I appreciate as a PC gamer is that considering the quality of the graphics I suffered very few issues with frame rate. So in terms of graphics you have very nice graphics with high frame rates on a less than midline system. 8/10

Gameplay: This is a survival Horror game and seriously plays like it. The aiming was a little off but better than a LOT of similar games I've played and the controls were responsive. The little 'mini-games' for the various unlocking tools were a nice addition those they did eventually become tiresome. But overall a strong showing with the responsiveness. 8/10

Story: This is where the game shines. Some people prefer the movie Aliens to the original. I am not one of them. And this game really help with the feel of the first game to me. The additional stories other than just the main campaign are also well written. I think one of the things I appreciate most is that the character of Ellen Ripley is a strong female character that does not fight the usual stereotype. She is an engineer (when in the real work only 10% of engineers are women). The game does not rely on making her a sexual object. And the terrot and atmosphere the game presents is strong. 9/10

Overall Average of the scores would be 8.3. I try to be objective but I do have a love for this genre so it will be a little biased in this review and round up instead of down to 9/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The atmosphere, the movie authenticity, and overall presentation are just incredible. As far as the timeline of the Alien universe is concerned, the game takes place between the first and second Alien movies.

Just the start of the game already sends chills down your spine. Not because of an awesome intro video, or some gory scene, no. It's minimalistic. It's just Ellen Ripley, narrating her last log entry that you will hear at the end of the first Alien movie, "Final report of the commercial starship Nostromo, third officer reporting. The other members of the crew, Kane, Lambert, Parker, Brett, Ash and Captain Dallas, are dead. Cargo and ship destroyed. I should reach the frontier in about six weeks. With a little luck, the network will pick me up. This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off."

This is it for the intro and you're immediately thrown into the midst of th game. You are Amanda Ripley, Ellen Ripley's daughter, you work for Weyland-Yutani Corp. as well, and your eventual mission is to retrieve the data recorder that contains what you believe to be all that is left of your mother. The data recorder is at Sevastopol station, and you will be headed there.

Obviously things don't go as planned. and you not only have to face down an Alien warrior, but also deal with hostile factions aboard the station that are not happy to see you by any means of the imagination. To begin with, you have nothing. No tools, no items, no materials, and most importantly, nothing to defend yourself with. While you can liken the overall atmosphere, the intense dread and setting to games like "Dead Space", this is far worse, because you literally are vulnerable. No armor, no weapons, and one or two shots from anyone WILL kill you.

Although I haven't really gotten that far yet, I can already tell you that the atmosphere and sounds do have you constantly on edge. This is not a game you want to play when you feel like relaxing.

Performance wise Creative Assembly have done a marvelous job. My rig is definitely not the latest in terms of gaming hardware, and on my QuadCore Q9400 @ 2.66 GHz, 8 GB RAM and GeForce GTX 650 1 GB I could play at 1080p with Ultra settings and still get 30-40 fps. I set the resolution down one notch and a couple of settings are back to "High" instead, and now I'm between 50-60 fps. Perfect. I'm not seeing huge differences in graphics quality with those settings changed and high fps is more important to me in this kind of game. I am definitely impressed with the optimizations and scalability. One of the best examples of great performance optimizations to date!

So, to cut a long story short: If you like the Alien franchise, sci-fi and can handle being on edge for every minute you play this game, then this is for you. I am by no means a survival horror fan, but this a classic. It's part of a franchise that defined science-fiction and molded it into what it is today. It's a testament to pop-culture and it's simply fantastic.

And to all those complaing too much "backtracking", "stealth", and not enough guns; it's not an FPS game. It's survival horror. The game exactly makes you behave the way you would if you were trying to avoid contact with a hostile force while having to get somewhere undetected. Slow and careful! What truly makes this outstanding is that for once fear is not the ONLY enemy. . .

    Visuals
    ----------
The game captures the old analog feel of the universe perfectly. Everything seems futuristic but at the same time feels old and clunky. That mix of old and new is hard to capture and Creative Assembly did this with flying colors. The alien itself is also brought to life with beautiful animations and looks exactly how I remember from the old film. Unfortunately, characters and their mouths in some cutscenes can be a little lacking. However, never to the point you are taken out of the universe. Cutscenes and character models still look great. Just nothing to marvel over. I also noticed how in game characters lips wouldn't match what they were saying all the time. Forgivable with everything else the game nails. Visuals- 9/10

    Gameplay
    --------------
Finally an alien game that doesn't have you blasting away every alien in sight. The game is a first person survival horror that focuses on stealth. In fact it is a MUST! The alien is STRONG and will kill you on sight. I have seen some complaints about the alien being OP but honestly......it would kill you as fast as it does. The instant death adds CRAZY tension as you desperately hide under desks and in lockers. The game is long and needs to be taken slow, which will not appeal to all. If you try and sprint at the wrong time the alien will hear you and it won't take long till its all over. Also, there have been comments about it getting repetitive, which I believe is false. The game never lets up the tension and you believe everything that is going wrong and why you would need to head back to an area. Which, never happens that often. You may go back to 1 or 2 areas but they will be VERY different because the alien and station have changed since your last time being there. Which all adds to the believability of the game. Amanda is given a wide range of weapons but, unfortunately I found myself hugging the flamethrower all the time when I got it. All the other guns and weapons look and function perfectly. But the flame thrower is such a safe haven from the alien its hard to get away from. There are a few hacking mini games that add CRAZY tension. They do not pause the game and for all you know the alien could be right behind you as you start, making every encounter with a hackable door tense, and awesome. Amanda moves well and is easy to control. I never ran into a SINGLE bug or glitch in over 16+ hours. The gameplay is great, but I felt that the flamethrower (still a great aspect) made me feel too safe at moments. When you get the chance to use the other weapons on people and androids, like the pistol, it feels fresh and fun. But be warned, the alien can hear every shot! Gameplay- 9/10

    Sound and Voice
    ----------------------
The game sounds beautiful. Clunky sounds that fit beautifully with the universe. As you walk down the corridors you will hear your every step echo through the halls, worrying you if someone is listening. The clunky analog computers sound exactly like how you would imagine. Kezia Burrows voice acts Amanda Ripley and does a phenomenal job. Every time something goes wrong you BELIEVE she is distressed at the situation. You believe Amanda is scared out of her mind at moments because of the great line deliveries Kezia Burrows gives. a specific moment is when Amanda is dodging train cars......I felt like an actual persons life was in my hands. All other characters are acted very well as well minus one character named Marlow who was mostly forgettable. Also, the music is perfect, fitting in the world perfectly. And hearing the old classic theme is an amazing throw back. Tense music during Alien/Human/Android attacks are great. Sound and voice- 8/10

    Story
    -------
Story starts of a little quick, which seems to just THROW Amanda into the current situation. Once you arrive on the Station, that is where the story begins to shine. Figuring out ways to survive and find your crew, while simultaneously trying to search of answer about Ellen (Amanda's mother) is fun. However, the game seems to throw away the whole Ellen aspect of the story early with one quick moment with the flight recorder which I won't spoil. Then it is brought back up for a quick instant at the end. Still fun when its happening though. The true fun is in the story of survival which is captured beautifully by everything above. No details about that, in order to avoid spoilers. Just know its a fun ride. Story- 8/10

All aspects of this game are strong. Other than some wonky lip syncing in game, feeling to attached to the flamethrower, and the Ellen story seeming tossed, this game nails everything. From the amazing visuals, to the fun gameplay, great Voice acting and sound design, and Amanda's great story of survival on the sevastopol make for a game that will appeal to all gamers. Not just fans of the universe. Alien Isolation is a ride worth taking.

The same 70's vision of the future presented in Alien is excellently reproduced in Alien: Isolation, from the Retro look of The Glitchy CRT Monitors, to the excellent sound design and overall atmosphere of the Sevastopol itself. It all feels very Alien, and that's what's so amazing about it.
The Ambient Score is Fantastic, Changing constantly depending on the situation you find yourself in. It really adds to the immersion, because when things get tense, and the music starts to rise, you're going to wanna think of a plan. The Alien itself is incredible, whenever its on the prowl, the clock is just slowly ticking away because you know, it's only a matter of time before he finds you. The Working Joes can be just as scary at times, coming at you like a terminator as you count you're bullets to decide whether you can take it on face to face or find a good hiding place and wait for them to give up searching for you. As an Alien fan, i think the overall story is a little lackluster. It starts off with an amazing opening sequenc, begging you into the world of Alien, then starts to fall a bit flat considering the supporting characters are just bland and instantly forgettable. The Protagonist However, Amanda Ripley, fits perfectly into the Alien Universe, and you want to know more about her. You feel for her on her journey to figure out what happened to her mother, and it's amazing to see What happened to Amanda Ripley in-between Alien & Aliens. Alien: Isolation is yet again a great example, of a stellar Survival-Horror Experience.

Creative Assembly could've released anything, but as long as it functioned (to some extent and didn't deeply anger players) it was already miles ahead of the infamous "Colonial Marines" fiasco. This is troubling since for one, not one person that claims to adore the game, seems to want to mention how terribly paced it is, or how the dialogue is awkwardly written or how the cinematic sequences are deeply underwhelming. Even worse than that, they fail to mention how unbelievably silly of a notion it was to place Ellen Ripley's daughter in as the main character and give her an equally silly motivation such as: "My Mother has been missing for 15 years, guess its time to fly out on the same looking ship, meet a bunch of generic characters in space on another ship and ultimately get nowhere in the search for my own Mother."

This is that entire plot, excluding the Alien, and of course the other humans on board this theoretical "Station," who will stop at nothing just to kill you and only you (unless they spot the Alien of course or by proxy are spotted by it). You can dress up the ugliest little girl in the whole wide world, teach her how to play the Violin like a grandmaster, and at the end of the day someone is still going to call her only "passable" on of those abilities. That's what this whole game feels like, they borrowed the look, the sound, the music (which I'll give them a pass on since it actually involved some of the composers from the film itself) and of course the actual Alien just to smack it all together to form a boring re-envisioning of the first film. Its not even shocking how lazily this was thrown together, but looking back at the seminal Aliens versus Predator 2, a game that embodied the second Aliens film amongst other things, wrestled three intertwining story lines, three races with individual player campaigns and managed to make the whole thing immensely original to boot- its easy to see just how terribly unoriginal Alien: Isolation is at its heart. It mimics a time and a place that some people feel is where the series began and ended. However, their is a balance that other titles in this sub-genre have managed to lock down to some degree, whereas Isolation seems to be focused on some rather poor stealth sections in stiff, metallic, dark, dull environments that unbelievably DON'T provide you with any cover from the laser beam eyes of the humans and Alien alike. Amnesia gave you a stealth system that made sense, it even slapped you on the wrist if you hung around the shadows for too long by winding up your insanity meter, you got into a room, you analyzed what the objective in said room was, you completed it as quickly as manageable and stayed out of the sight of the wandering monstrosities. It was tense, it was interesting and you were unarmed throughout. Which is why the "crafting" in Isolation seems like a chore. Most of the times the Human artificial intelligence is lacking to a degree that would make the rent-a-guards from the Thief series blush. They sometimes see you and then sometimes... they just don't. Doesn't even matter how close you are to them in some situations. The Alien itself is equally as stupid. Either that or its a "clever girl" super genius that will sniff out your location in a millisecond and kill you. I found this garbage stealth system to be a failure, the crafting to be ultimately pointless in many situations and on the whole the game itself is deeply in need of a patch to address these issues. What they implemented only works correctly something like 75% of the time and that's not good enough. I understand that they wanted to play it safe, especially with the brilliantly stupid casting decision of "Amanda Ripley" as our protagonist, but it stands out and speaks volumes about the team behind all of it. Its like reading fan fiction, Alien fan fiction and that's been done to death (thanks comic books). What I would've really liked to have seen here was a stealth and A.I. system that actually worked, but mostly what I really wanted to play was less rip-off material incorporated from such games as Dead Space, System Shock, Amnesia, and Bioshock. However it ultimately doesn't matter what I think about the game, its getting loads of positive feedback from most sites just from its "atmosphere" alone, but I still think it needs a patch as soon as possible.

It's a beautifully atmospheric, beautifully detailed, dreadfully horrifying first-person survival horror masterpiece, and the fact that it even exists in an AAA industry that abhors the single-player, story-driven experience in favor of high-octane cinematic set-pieces and intense multi-player, because everything that isn't Call of Duty isn't Call of Duty enough.

After the disaster that was Aliens: Colonial Marines, it seems like the strategy now is to just go back, call do-over and do everything the exact opposite the way Colonial Marines did it. Instead of a big and burly marine mowing down the Xenomorph horde, you're just an engineer, scared and alone, while everything around you is out for your blood, forcing you to hide and find ways of circumventing most of the threats in favor of dealing with them head on.

You play as Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley, who has come to the dying space station known as Sevastopol to find key information about her mother and the disappearance of the Nostromo. When she gets there, she finds that she's in a life-or-death situation, trapped on the space station with other violent, angry survivors, and the titular, infamous Xenomorph.

The art design is phenomenal. The "low scifi" look of the original films has been preserved with amazing posterity, filled with CRT monitors and blinking LED lights, and giving every inch of Sevastopol personality and depth. It's a beautiful game, and runs incredibly well, even on the highest graphical settings.

But how does it play? Well, the game itself can be frustratingly difficult, often deaths will occur seemingly out of nowhere and due to no fault of the player. This is a game where you will die a lot, but save points are sparse, so repeating a difficult section will probably take even longer than normal because you have to do everything leading up to it as well. This isn't helped by the otherwise incredibly well-done AI of both the Alien and the humanoid characters, who are very smart and will ambush and outwit you in ways you won't expect. Expect to use crafting recipes often and in creative ways.

But for a genuinely terrifying horror experience? Alien: Isolation delivers, and if you're willing to put up with the slightly frustrating difficulty spikes, then you have an absolute masterpiece, one that Giger himself would be proud of. The Alien himself is spectacular to behold, with the aforementioned well-done A.I., can often be used in creative and unpredictable ways. You can get the attention of a group of pesky humans by using a noisemaker or gunshot, then hiding in a locker while the Xenomorph slaughters everyone, then hold your breath while he searches for you, praying that he doesn't hear you breathing or the blips of your motion tracker. It's an awesomely tense experience, and one that I can't get enough of.

If you're a fan of traditional horror, sci-fi, or the Alien franchise, then this is worth buying at full price, absolutely.

The star of the game. the Alien, is every bit as cunning and devious as the one encountered by the Nostromo crew, a terrifying alpha predator from whom you have to run if you want to stay alive. I found this game to be a perfectly paced mix of exploration, stealth and combat (yes, you can confront foes other than the Alien, if you wish or if you must). And there are puzzles to solve, doors to hack (through a number of cute mini-games) and a crafting system. But you'll have to figure things mostly by yourself, as the game doesn't take you by the hand. The checkpoint (and auto) save feature only adds to the tension: there are times when reaching a save checkpoint really feels like an accomplishment.

To sum it up: this game is an absolute must have for any fan of the Alien franchise, but could definitively stand on its own as a thrilling science-fi horror masterpiece.

The most important thing to understand about this new entry into the series is it's radical shift in gameplay design from those of which were, by an large, iterations on the same gameplay first experienced Doom. And it was with no surprise that the franchise was going to take this well trodden path as the sequel to the original film in the series was John Carmack's main inspiration in developing Doom.

By diagnosing the main problem with one of videogames most popular genres The Creative Assembly have opted to make the player feel as vulnerable as possible in order to instil a genuine sense of dread and tension throughout the game. The game doesn't allow players to horde backpacks full of guns and ammo but instead forces you to use any meagre gadget you can concoct in order to distract your enemies as opposed to mowing them down with little cost to your resources or safety. There are guns introduced later in the game and surprise surprise here in lies one of the games strange inconsistencies with the Alien cannon and potential flaws in it's gameplay.

After a slow burn introduction to the Sevastopol Station, a crumbling space port in it's last stages of being decommissioned, the game starts out incredibly reminiscent of Bioshock allowing the player to venture in at their own pace discovering computers containing personal logs by Sevastopol inhabitants and audio recordings that help to organically deliver the narrative element of the game. Once further into the Sevastopol and the main elements have been introduced the gameplay really takes off with the Alien and other enemies all working together to create a wonderfully organic emergent gameplay style that is never scripted and always seems unique throughout repeat playthroughs. And repeat playthroughs of invidual missions will become commonplace to even the most seasoned and skilled players as The Creative Assembly have done something truly amazing with the AI of it's titular enemy by designing it to work with heightened sensors that enable it to respond dynamically to sound and situations as opposed to being moved on predetermined paths with basic AI programming. In short this game is **** HARD!

The look and feel of the game is stunning, albeit it with a minimal amount of dodgy cutscenes, poor human facial animations and shader aliasing problems, as the lighting and graphical fidelity convinces you that you are in world of Alien, one of cinemas most stunning and meticulously designed films. The Alien's design and animations are far beyond anything I've seen in any game and it's clear where Sega have really channelled their money opting, with minor cost to less vital parts of the game, to really bring the Alien to life.

However there are some problems with the game, although minimal, and these are down in large part to the second half of this massive game. When I say massive I can tell you it must have taken me over 25 hours to complete the game on Normal difficulty on a very explorative playthrough and once the game reached the 15 hour mark for me, which would have been an ample length for a game of this kind, the Alien "goes on vacation" for the 3rd quarter of the game leaving you pining for it's return. Once the game finds itself without an Alien you are left to contend with the stations second most deadly entity, the Androids, who prove to be somewhat less fulfilling. The game also chooses to ignore some vital elements of the Alien's lifecycle introduced by James Cameron in the second movie which I feel are to it's detriment.

On the whole Alien: Isolation is one of the most tense and claustrophobic horror stealth games I've ever experienced and I heartily recommend to it to any and all that have even the slightest interest in horror and sci-fiction. Well done CA the Alien is finally back in town!

Despite the game's beauty, there's a lot of things that really drag it down. The worst of it is the repetitive tasks. "Alright run across the map and hit this switch and come all the way back to run this generator ok ok now run across the map two more times because the lights suddenly went out and you need to find a hidden keycard to-" Yeah, painful.

Another downside is the layout of some of the maps. You can find yourself running into tons of locked doors and going in circles just finding that 100th generator you need to turn on. Though this is redeemed by the atmospheric design of everything, so at least you're running around pretty well-lit maps and crawling through convenient rewarding vents anyway.

Despite the fact that I didn't enjoy the game as much as everyone else, I would STILL recommend it to ever other gamer out there.

The game has some very minor flaws but nothing that won't get ironed out when some patches roll out, other than that this will be my game of the year. The game was exactly what I had expected from all the trailers and interviews regarding it, focusing mainly on stealth and survival, this isn't a game for people who want a run and gun experience and it's very important to emphasize that fact as people still seem to be buying games without having done any research beforehand and then complaining that it wasn't what they thought it was, hence the reason for some low scores on here. This game makes you crawl like a goddamn worm, in constant fear of being squashed. I was scared to leave the closet I was hiding in, because the monster was somewhere out there. [Dec 2014, p.68]

The Creative Assembly’s game, however, is cooked; left to boil so long it loses all flavor and texture. For 10 hours, Isolation is one of the best horror games ever made, until a second, poorly made game bursts out of its heart.

Alien Isolation can be frustratingly difficult at times, but nevertheless it’s easily the best game in the Alien franchise since the original Aliens vs Predator. The fact that the game mimics perfectly the 1970s look and sci fi stylings of Ridley Scott’s Alien film makes the experience even more endearing. By featuring absurd number of “surprise” twists, Alien Isolation’s final act could’ve used some trimming. [Nov 2014]
