AEW: Fight Forever is a triumphant return to the wrestling ring for THQ Nordic and Yuke’s, recapturing the magic of their original, simple gameplay and amazing customization with yet a third wrestling organization.

AEW: Fight Forever is a great video game for fans of wrestling who have been watching All Elite Wrestling since it launched. It gives them a chance to fight using their favorite performers, experience the spectacle of their biggest events, and create a custom character that can then aim to win against the champions of the moment. It’s also a chaotic and fun experience with friends. But I don’t think the title can bring new fans to wrestling or to AEW. Gamers need to know at least some things about this world to enjoy matches. The game never acknowledges that results are predetermined. AEW: Fight Forever offers a good foundation to build on if the developers aim to create a future title that will capture the entire breadth of wrestling and gives any gamers a way to become engaged with it.

AEW's first game gets a lot more right than it does wrong. Its Story mode may be a little short and it may be lacking when it comes to customisation options, but its solid in-ring combat system, its sense of humour and its emphasis on violence make it a viable, edgier alternative to the glossy WWE 2K series.

AEW: Fight Forever is a big wish I can't. The technical deficiencies are evident and demonstrate how the software house's Achilles heel remains the technical aspect of its works. Conceptually, the game re-proposes the madness and the possibility of customizing the gaming experience that had made the first wrestling titles great in the 2000s. But the technical limitations of the gameplay mark the first AEW work. Perhaps the future of the brand will be brighter, but in the meantime the first chapter will struggle to remain etched in the memory of the players.

Taken on its own and within a bubble, AEW: Fight Forever certainly provides a unique flair for those who like pro-wrestling games. Sadly, when considering other wrestling games, such as WWE 2K23 and Fire Pro Wrestling World, it falls short of the mark. This isn’t Le Champion; it’s Le Chump-ion.

AEW: Fight Forever successfully fulfills the founding principle it set for itself: providing an experience that brings back simple, frenetic, fun gameplay that gives wrestling games back the arcade vibe that has been lost over time. At its best moments, AEW is all of that, but it still fails to be much more. The scarcity of game modes, a roster with gaps, the somewhat persistent bugs, and a Road to Elite far from the quality of the predecessors it draws inspiration from are damaging to the experience and don't give us many reasons to come back. Nevertheless, with promises of constant development and regular updates from the studio, we have reason to believe that there is room to fix these shortcomings and offer a more complete wrestling experience. It just isn't it at the moment.

AEW’s first foray into videogames has much room for improvement across its odd-looking character models, slim game mode offerings, and poor AI balancing. That said, in the right crowd, you might enjoy it for its schlock and solid controls.

Base game is FANTASTIC. Throw back to the AKI days. While lacking depth, gameplay is fun, easy to pick up, more challenging to master.

The longThis is the best wrestling game I have played in a very long time. It is a faithful recreation and modernization of the AKI engine. The long wait and lack of content (for now) are due to the developers animating all the moves by hand, which is time-consuming compared to the motion capture of most modern sports games. It was a labor of love, and it hits the ball out of the park where it counts; the gameplay.

The graphics are charming and help define the vibe of this game. Video games don't have to look like real life to be good or visually appealing—examples: WWF No Mercy, Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Pong, etc.

I can't wait to see what AEW Games has lined up for this title in the future, and I am hopeful there will be a stampede of content coming.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pretty damn bad. I don't give it a 2, because at least it works and is functional in the most basic of ways. I've now played 6.5 hours of it (no DLC purchased), but it's hard to keep going as there's not much else to do.

The graphics and models are some of the worst I've seen in the last few years for a release of this supposed size—actual early PS3-level graphics. Smackdown Vs. Raw 2007 on the Xbox 360 (the first wrestling game to be in HD) looks 10x better than this. A game released 15 years ago blows AEW Fight Forever out of the water in the graphical department.

The controls and gameplay when you're on the attack are decent, but kicking out and reversing are broken, and it's all up to luck. The game feels floaty to play and buggy at points.

The creation suite is sad for a game in 2023. It looks promising at first, but as you look further and further into it, it's barebones in comparison to 2K, MDickie games, and Fire Pro World. Having no Community Creations is actually laughable (Yes, you CANNOT share creations online...). Not only that, but any actual CAW you make (even with formulas) looks AWFUL.

The match types are a joke. I counted 6 or 7. Again, SvR 07 that's going to be 16 years old soon had waaay more match types. No full entrances either! That is probably on the level of a PS1 game...

The Career/Story mode seems promising at first, but it's like they didn't have time to expand on it and after 2 hours it's just a borefest of nothing to offer.

As a wrestling fan, I'm extremely disappointed. The developers and company hyped the game to be an old school wrestling game brought into a new era of gaming, but in reality it's a barebones video game that gets nothing accomplished like the old AKI games did and doesn't bring anything new to the table. It's like they forgot we're headed into 2024. Yes, you can base your gameplay and style on older games but... how about changing stuff up to reflect we're in a new age where people demand more? We're not paying 30 bucks for the game, it's a full priced AAA title, isn't it???

It's a product sold solely on the nostalgia of their fans and it's shameful the amount of DLC there is already. I will not continue to play this and I'm saddened I purchased it on release and fell into the hype.

The game is unfinished, buggy, and looks terrible. This is a very bad game and the fanboys can act like it's not but it is bad.
