AEW: Fight Forever is a triumphant return to the wrestling ring for THQ Nordic and Yuke’s, recapturing the magic of their original, simple gameplay and amazing customization with yet a third wrestling organization.

AEW: Fight Forever is a great video game for fans of wrestling who have been watching All Elite Wrestling since it launched. It gives them a chance to fight using their favorite performers, experience the spectacle of their biggest events, and create a custom character that can then aim to win against the champions of the moment. It’s also a chaotic and fun experience with friends. But I don’t think the title can bring new fans to wrestling or to AEW. Gamers need to know at least some things about this world to enjoy matches. The game never acknowledges that results are predetermined. AEW: Fight Forever offers a good foundation to build on if the developers aim to create a future title that will capture the entire breadth of wrestling and gives any gamers a way to become engaged with it.

AEW's first game gets a lot more right than it does wrong. Its Story mode may be a little short and it may be lacking when it comes to customisation options, but its solid in-ring combat system, its sense of humour and its emphasis on violence make it a viable, edgier alternative to the glossy WWE 2K series.

Fans of the promotion and wrestling games in general will find themselves partially satisfied with AEW: Fight Forever. The flaws are noticeable, such as the truncated introductions, limited arenas, and a smaller roster compared to the competition. The presence of creative tools gets hampered by the lack of a built-in way to share them, and the absence/trimming of match types can feel off. While the story mode is goofy in several ways, it is the strength of the wrestling engine that keeps the game fun to play, match after match. If the rumors are true, then this good game can get much better with patches and downloadable content for years to come. Otherwise, if this potential series follows a more traditional development cycle, this title is a very good base to work with for a hopefully more ambitious and meatier sequel.

Overall, AEW: Fight Forever is a fantastic pickup for fans of the company who want to experience many of its roster in video game form for the first time, but it does lack the polish of not only past and present WWE games, but other Yuke’s titles as well. The foundation is solid, but the package is a bit bare-bones and match flow isn’t on-par with what one would expect for a roster full of talent known for epic matches. The core action is fun, as is the story mode — which is one area Yuke’s topples any modern-day WWE game in. Casual wrestling game fans are probably fine staying with WWE’s offerings, while those wanting a faster-paced experience will be right at home with Fight Forever.
  6. How much you get out of AEW Fight Forever depends on what you like most about wrestling games. If you’re a solo player who likes to take these TV characters and create your own matches and stories, then you’re not going to find any of that here. However, if you want a wrestling game you can boot up to play on the couch with your mates, then Fight Forever is a blast to mess around with, it just doesn’t have quite as much variety as WWE’s offering.

In the end, people will remember Fight Forever in one of two ways: either as a missed opportunity or as a stepping stone to something great. For something akin to a freshman effort, it has a lot to offer, and might be more of a victim of circumstances than anything else. Its largest competition is coming off a great game, and even though the styles are different, there's still an element of trying to simulate something fake connecting the two. With reports coming out that development was scaled back during its many delays, there's no doubt that the version we got was the best we could expect in a timely manner. These elements combined to make something fun in the moment, but possibly forgettable shortly after. If it hopes to have legs, it's going to need more free updates (like the announced battle royale mode that looks as ludicrous as it sounds) to entice its players to stick around. When you're in the action, though, you can practically see the CRT and corded controllers connecting you to the dropkicks and pins. For better or worse.

AEW: Fight Forever is a big wish I can't. The technical deficiencies are evident and demonstrate how the software house's Achilles heel remains the technical aspect of its works. Conceptually, the game re-proposes the madness and the possibility of customizing the gaming experience that had made the first wrestling titles great in the 2000s. But the technical limitations of the gameplay mark the first AEW work. Perhaps the future of the brand will be brighter, but in the meantime the first chapter will struggle to remain etched in the memory of the players.

Taken on its own and within a bubble, AEW: Fight Forever certainly provides a unique flair for those who like pro-wrestling games. Sadly, when considering other wrestling games, such as WWE 2K23 and Fire Pro Wrestling World, it falls short of the mark. This isn’t Le Champion; it’s Le Chump-ion.

AEW: Fight Forever successfully fulfills the founding principle it set for itself: providing an experience that brings back simple, frenetic, fun gameplay that gives wrestling games back the arcade vibe that has been lost over time. At its best moments, AEW is all of that, but it still fails to be much more. The scarcity of game modes, a roster with gaps, the somewhat persistent bugs, and a Road to Elite far from the quality of the predecessors it draws inspiration from are damaging to the experience and don't give us many reasons to come back. Nevertheless, with promises of constant development and regular updates from the studio, we have reason to believe that there is room to fix these shortcomings and offer a more complete wrestling experience. It just isn't it at the moment.

AEW Fight Forever, much like the company it represents, is a cocky young upstart trying to take the crown from a titan. Also much like its source material, its first outing is a decent foundation for what its future could provide. The roster is a good primer on the current AEW lineup, there are enough match types to keep things fresh for a while, and Road To Elite is an irreverent look at the life of a wrestler that made me smile. There are some bumps in this road--particularly the lack of trios matches and the disappointing entrances--but those are all things which can be fixed in future installments. If AEW truly plans to Fight Forever in the video game world, then they've thrown an effective first punch.

An homage to fondly remembered wrestling titles of the past, AEW: Fight Forever features a large roster, simple controls, numerous game modes, and a wonderfully entertaining match flow, but some issues keep it from grabbing the gold.

Wrestling-experts Yuke's put the focus on old-fashioned, tried and tested wrestling action with AEW Fight Forever. They however failed to add anything new or distinct to the genre.

AEW’s first foray into videogames has much room for improvement across its odd-looking character models, slim game mode offerings, and poor AI balancing. That said, in the right crowd, you might enjoy it for its schlock and solid controls.

The big hype around this game was it's old skool like No Mercy (N64) and this is nothing like it my biggest gripe is around how the game feels/plays it's like it's missing frames of animation it's not smooth it feels like when you initiate a grapple the wrestlers just magnetize together then you press the button and it's like it runs the script and plays the animation, there is just something off with how this feels.

Small roster that only the most die hard AEW fans will know with no real legends to lean on (fairly new company) and several omissions.

I just cannot recommend this for the price and how quickly you will get bored because of the lack of depth and replayability, The game should really of been $20 with a $10 season pass for DLC wrestlers. Wait for a sale or hope they do better next time.

This review contains spoilers, click full review link to view. Pretty damn bad. I don't give it a 2, because at least it works and is functional in the most basic of ways. I've now played 6.5 hours of it (no DLC purchased), but it's hard to keep going as there's not much else to do.

The graphics and models are some of the worst I've seen in the last few years for a release of this supposed size—actual early PS3-level graphics. Smackdown Vs. Raw 2007 on the Xbox 360 (the first wrestling game to be in HD) looks 10x better than this. A game released 15 years ago blows AEW Fight Forever out of the water in the graphical department.

The controls and gameplay when you're on the attack are decent, but kicking out and reversing are broken, and it's all up to luck. The game feels floaty to play and buggy at points.

The creation suite is sad for a game in 2023. It looks promising at first, but as you look further and further into it, it's barebones in comparison to 2K, MDickie games, and Fire Pro World. Having no Community Creations is actually laughable (Yes, you CANNOT share creations online...). Not only that, but any actual CAW you make (even with formulas) looks AWFUL.

The match types are a joke. I counted 6 or 7. Again, SvR 07 that's going to be 16 years old soon had waaay more match types. No full entrances either! That is probably on the level of a PS1 game...

The Career/Story mode seems promising at first, but it's like they didn't have time to expand on it and after 2 hours it's just a borefest of nothing to offer.

As a wrestling fan, I'm extremely disappointed. The developers and company hyped the game to be an old school wrestling game brought into a new era of gaming, but in reality it's a barebones video game that gets nothing accomplished like the old AKI games did and doesn't bring anything new to the table. It's like they forgot we're headed into 2024. Yes, you can base your gameplay and style on older games but... how about changing stuff up to reflect we're in a new age where people demand more? We're not paying 30 bucks for the game, it's a full priced AAA title, isn't it???

It's a product sold solely on the nostalgia of their fans and it's shameful the amount of DLC there is already. I will not continue to play this and I'm saddened I purchased it on release and fell into the hype.
