Decades pass. The Earth colony thrives. Then... a signal. Alien. Unknown.

The moment Gluon particles are detected, dread spreads like fire. The skies darken with a familiar terror - Earth is under siege once again. The time has come for a new generation of Psyvariars to rise... and save humanity.

Psyvariar 3 will remain installed on my Nintendo Switch 2 for quite a while simply because of its engaging, highly-difficult, yet highly-rewarding gameplay loop of grazing bullets and racking up high scores. It falls short in the graphical department, but it makes up for it in properly executing a bullet hell that caters for those who want a true shmup challenge.

Psyvariar 3 is a great shmup for newcomers, with mechanics that increase the difficulty in a smarter way and will appeal to veterans too. The Buzz system needs refinement, but nothing that ruins the great experience the game provides. It also has so many extra modes that the replay value is worthwhile.

With bafflingly-deep lore and wild backgrounds that tend to distract from (or hinder) the foreground action, Psyvariar 3 is a committed to some odd choices.

Overall, this game is definitely worth a play, especially if you’re into short gaming sessions. I imagine playing it for longer than an hour in one sitting could send you into a bit of a trance.Even if you’re not into bullet hell games, you should give this one a go, even if it’s just for the soundtrack alone. For everything mentioned above, it should definitely be put on your radar. For just £17.99, it’s a must-have.
