Jun 2, 2026Which brings us back to how fundamentally impressive it is that this is on a handheld console now. I might be on the older end of the millennial generation, but I remember how exciting it was to have Final Fantasy IV, V, and VI on the go thanks to the Game Boy Advance. This is the kind of on-the-go experience that was pure science fiction not so long ago.

Jun 2, 2026Perhaps the most striking thing of all is how “normal” it’s starting to feel to see a game like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth running on a Nintendo console. Just a few years ago, something like this would have seemed completely impossible. Yes, there are noticeable visual cutbacks. Yes, there are technical limitations and some performance issues. But the final result is still extremely solid for an RPG of this scale, and it’s more than made up for by the fact that it runs in handheld mode. Square Enix has clearly delivered a very serious technical effort here.

Jun 2, 2026Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2 is a very impressive port that brings one of the generation’s best RPGs to Nintendo’s new console in great form. Docked mode is where the game shines, with largely stable performance and a level of visual fidelity that preserves the scale of Rebirth far better than expected. Handheld mode comes with more noticeable drawbacks, including softer image quality and fast battery drain, but none of it stopped me from wanting to keep playing Rebirth wherever I go.

Neither the low-quality textures, nor the noticeable pop-in, not even that ocean that looks straight out of a bygone console generation can hide the sheer scale of this port. The game remains as exceptional as ever, and the fact that it runs this smoothly is, quite frankly, miraculous.

While the Nintendo Switch 2 version successfully brings this massive adventure to a portable format, it requires more compromises than the previous installment's port. The result is still an impressive achievement, but the visual and technical reductions are more noticeable this time around. Even so, Rebirth's outstanding world, characters, and storytelling continue to shine, making it a worthwhile version for players who value portability above all else.

The game extracts the maximum from the Switch 2 hardware, offering a more polished experience than the base PS5 version at launch. It includes all content and recent structural improvements, making the epic RPG fully enjoyable on the go. Despite technical compromises, the core magic of the adventure remains intact, expanding the game's reach to a new audience.

Jun 2, 2026Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is one of the best-looking games the game industry has ever produced. It's not even that it's realistic. The art does a lot of the heavy lifting in creating beautiful and atmospheric scenes. The core gameplay is rock solid and hard to put down when it’s allowed to shine, but it’s dragged down by a bloated narrative that takes five hours to tell ten minutes’ worth of story. As a long-time fan who grew up playing Final Fantasy VII back in 1997, Rebirth can be frustrating to experience because, amidst all the trite and misguided creative liberties, Final Fantasy VII is in there somewhere, screaming to break out. At the very least, players will get a lot of bang for their buck because the sheer density of content is so ridiculous that there's enough here for two games.
